Quintessential Christie/Poirot.......2005-12-17
A classic wealthy-relative-murdered-for-her-money plot, witty dialogue between Poirot and Hastings, and a gripping denouement make DUMB WITNESS one of the most quintessential of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot detective novels, along with THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES and AFTER THE FUNERAL. Highly recommended.
Not one of Christie's best, but not bad........2005-08-03
The story itself is fairly routine (and bears more than a couple of similarities to "Murder on the Links", one of Christie's earliest works). However, the reader is advised to avoid the Berkley editions at all cost; they are sloppily edited and are full of mistakes that anyone with even a basic knowledge of Agatha Christie (or, for that matter, the English language) wouldn't make. The St. Martin's Press editions are much better.
Great fun!.......2004-02-20
The Dumb Witness of the title is a dog named Bob. A dog who loves his mistress and possibly is the only witness to her murder. If it was a murder ... Hastings and Poirot work together, trade quips and get on one another's nerves as they work through a neat collection of suspects. This isn't high art, but it is quaint and well crafted. I recommend it.
An OK Book.......2003-06-10
I've read a few of Agatha Christie's book and I thought that this book was only OK. I was a little intrigued by the title of this book, but it has nothing to do with the story! She is one of my favorite authors, but I felt that this was not one of he best novel.
good..........2002-07-22
This a good book, but not that great. An old woman writes to Poirot, informing him that she fears that one of her own family may murder, one attempt had all ready been made. But the lady is delayed, and when Poirot arrives on the scene, the woman is dead. Who did it? This plot wiil keep you reading till the end.
Book Description
In this intricate mystery first published in 1937, Poirot receives a letter — two months after it was written — from rich spinster Emily Arundell about a possible attempt on her life. Suspicious, Poirot heads for her hometown of Market Basing to find her already dead. A now cold trail of clues leads Poirot through a colorful cast of characters and one of Christie’s typically cozy villages as he attempts to solve a murder that confounds even his superior skills. Reader Hugh Fraser masterfully evokes Christie’s distinctive world.

Reliable seller.......2007-02-07
The audio book was just as described, well-packaged and with speedy shipping. Thanks!
Where's the Fire!!!.......2006-03-28
I looked forward to receiving the latest offering of Agatha Christie read by Hugh Fraser. My expectations were high because of former recordings by the same reader. When what to my wondering ears but Mr. Fraser sounded as though he were announcing for the Indy 500. The actual speed of his voice was normal but the spaces between the words were excised, leaving a veritable jumble of crushed words clusters which could not be understood much less savored.
I checked with my sister who is an avid Christe on CD fan who thought that her CD's were being read by Daffy Duck.
We are both thoroughly disappointed in Audio Editions of "Dumb Witness" and "Murder is Easy"

Customer Reviews:
Interesting early contemporary of Superman's.......2007-01-10
If you have never read C.C. Beck's original Captain Marvel stories this is a great place to start...the beginning!
Real History.......2006-11-06
If you want to learn about how Captain Marvel came about and his growing pains, this is it. Was too young to read these when they came out and always wondered about his start. A 'must have' if you are serious about the oldies.
Curiously Flat, Albeit Entertaining.......2005-10-06
First, the caveat: vintage comics must be taken for what they are, for good and for ill. They are plot-heavy and character-light. The plots are outrageously unbelievable, with a liberal use of deus ex machina. In many ways, the early Captain Marvel stories found in the "Shazam! Archives" Vol. 1 are the apotheosis of vintage comics, as Marvel faces unlikely threats in impossible stories. However, from the beginning, Captain Marvel had one advantage: the art of C.C. Beck, which, although in its infancy in these first issues of "Whiz Comics," originally published by Fawcett, was already showing the distinct qualities that have defined the Marvel family to this day.
The frustrating thing about this volume is the formulaic approach writer Bill Everett takes in his scripts. He gives the reader a very exciting origin for this new super-hero. Billy Batson, a homeless paperboy follows a mysterious stranger into the subway (pretty irrationally), and is taken to the wizard, Shazam. Shazam gives Billy the power to transform into the adult Captain Marvel by uttering the wizard's name. Billy quickly uses his new powers to thwart the evil Dr. Sivana, and gain himself a job as a roving radio reporter (school not being a concern for child super-heroes at this time).
But after that admittedly stirring origin, the series falls into a pattern: Billy is assigned to report on some odd event, finds some sinister agent behind it (frequently Sivana) as part of a bid to conquer or destroy the world, and then thwarts it handily as Captain Marvel. They stories are not without their charms, of course, with some fun concepts along the way, like Sivana and his daughter Beautia ruling the planet Venus. There are certain things that were unique to this strip, the big one being the fact that Sivana, Marvel's most persistent enemy, knows the secret of his power. Another interesting plot point is Beautia's amorous feelings forCaptain Marvel, which is amusing because of course as Marvel is really still at the age where he finds girls "icky." However, most critics admit that Everett's scripts were serviceable at best, especially compared with that came later under the stewardship of Otto Binder.
If you want to read the whole "Shazam!" Archive series, obviously, you should start here. But be advised that it's a curiously flat, albeit entertaining, volume, and that its going to be a little while get to the greatest material the Marvel family had to offer.
My dad is happy II.......2005-08-03
It was a gift for my dad. It's not possible to get those comics here in Argentina. I just took a brief look at the books, they were a fancy edition, shinny paper, they looked really nice, although a bit smaller than I had imagined. But my dad called me the next day, said he felt like a kid again. He was very pleased.
Delivery time and form was excellent.

Unexpected pleasure in early Bear Stories.......2000-06-17
...I figured that Amazon had made a slight goof, for how could a17 year old hardcopy version of the book still be in print when thepaperback is out of stock? So I decided to order it anyway.
Imagine my surprise when I received notice when it shipped and it arrived.
This collects several early Bear Stories, including the title story (which serves as a prequel to the Eon stories), The White Horse Child (a rare fantasy entry), Hardfought (1983 Nebula winner), Petra (a Nebula Nominee), Scattershot and Mandala (part of his novel Heaven's River).
It's a strong "first stories" collection, and if you can grab it and are a fan of Greg Bear, then you should certainly do so.

Book Description
Written especially for Americans, this book demonstrates how varied, exciting, and inexpensive Indian cooking can be, and how easily you can produce authentic dishes at home. Over 200 recipes.
Customer Reviews:
tasty.......2006-07-23
Only tried the Tandoori Chicken recipie, but it was v. good. Little more work than some recipie books, but worth it. The spice mix for the marinade was as good as or better than most Indian restaurants.
Attractive Invite to World of Indian Cuisine.......2004-12-30
Jaffrey is surely one of Indian cuisine's true ambassadors. Finding the need initially in our country to receive Indian food, she had to prepare it herself and thus modified recipes to American appliances, measurements, etc.
Thus, we have a trusted intro into this fascinating, spicy world of major cuisine with a reliable source to guide. There is an excellent source listing by state with many mail and email order sites.
I am enchanted with the spices and yogurt sauces, e.g. Lamb korma with almonds, pecans, and sour cream; lamb chops with whole spices and yogurt; shrimp with brown sauce; sweet rice; yogurt with roasted eggplant.
This is great work to enter and explore this flavorful world. Color photos of finished work would help us that are unfamiliar with this.
Any cookbook by Jaffrey is great, but this one's the best.......2004-08-03
I bought this book when it came out in paperback for the first time. It cost all of $3.95, so that should give you an idea of how long ago that was. I have used it and loved it ever since. I've bought other Indian and Asian cookbooks, including some by Jaffrey, but this one remains my favorite.
So why is "An Invitation to Indian Cooking " so special? For one thing, the fact that it's written to be used by "American cooks in American kitchens" doesn't mean that the recipes have been modified to death. Jaffrey includes an extensive section on spices and a preliminary introduction on Indian cooking in general. If you read these, you come away with a basic understanding of Indian cooking techniques. That may not sound so unusual today, but it was, back in the early 1970s when this book first came out. There are no pretty pictures in this cookbook, but Jaffrey provides very detailed instructions in her recipes as to what the food is supposed to look like at each stage. This really helps if you're not familiar with Indian cooking. Her recipe headnotes and endnotes give helpful suggestions as to what to serve the dishes with and possible variations. As far as I'm concerned, "An Invitation to Indian Cooking" is a true classic.
A wonderful way to learn Indian Cooking.......2004-05-17
After spending some time in England, and falling in love with the Indian and Pakistan cuisine, I found myself wanting to make some of these dishes at home. My wife purchased An Invitation to Indian Cooking for me. I cannot begin to offer high enough praise for the book. Ms. Jaffrey makes the complex recipes of this part of the world not only reasonable for the average American cook, but gave my family and I the chance to try some fun and delightful recipes. All the recipes are translated to western measurements, and where possible into western ingredients (be prepared to track down a local Indian food store for some of the ingredients. Interestingly, some of the spices you might find at your local grocery store are usually cheaper at the Indian food stores).
Wonderful.......2003-11-28
After returning from a trip to India,
I decided I must learn how to cook the delicious
foods that I was able to sample in various regions
of that diverse and fascinating country.
"An Invitation to Indian Cooking" is the
book I bought, and it was clearly a great choice.
The book has been very carefully adapted by
the author for American kitchens - this in no
way "waters down" or "Americanizes" the recipes
as some other reviewers falsely assume has
been said. The book DOES, deliberately,
modify recipes so that they will be
authentic despite the differences in the
American market (our meats are more tender
and have more moisture, for instance, so the
methods for browning meat must be different
than a cook would use in Delhi). These changes
and adaptations are absolutely necessary to
assure the dishes will taste and appear as they
would in India. Ms. Jaffrey has done a marvelous
job and her instructions are not only easy to
follow, but the explanations are easy to under-
stand and appreciate. By all means, if you want
to try cooking Indian, buy this book - and her
others as well.

Book Description
For Every Cat An Angel celebrates the timeless connection between people and their "forever cats." From the moment a kitten is born, the book tells us, a guardian angel watches over it, loving the kitten no matter which path it chooses in life.
Some cats are adopted into loving families and the angel is happy knowing her cat will always be loved and cared for. But sometimes the angel knows someone very special is waiting for her cat, so she sends the cat through the stars until it arrives at the place it is meant to be - at the home of its forever person, where it will become a forever cat. Once a forever person and a forever cat find each other, nothing can ever separate them.
Filled with colorful illustrations, For Every Cat An Angel will delight cat lovers young and old and bring comfort to anyone who has had to say goodbye to their beloved cat companion.

FOR EVERY CAT AN ANGEL .......2007-08-15
For anyone who has ever loved a cat, for every cat lover out there... you owe it to yourself to buy and own this most wonderous book. The illustrations are absolutely charming and it is so beautifully written. Don't miss out on this one...add it to your continually growing cat book collection!

This book is the perfect book for any cat lover!
It'll bring a smile to your face and heart! :)
What a Lovely Book!.......2006-11-25
I bought it more than a year ago after the passing of my beloved kitty/soul-mate Princess. It is such a sweet comforting book -- like Princess, this book is small but brimming over with Love.
It's been more than a year since Miss P left me, but whenever I look thru this book I still get tears in my eyes!
Just Perfect.......2006-11-10
When I lost my cat- I was unable to discuss the loss with any degree of detachment. But I needed to be able to explain my kitty being gone to my young nieces who had also loved her. A book was the only solution. If I could read them something and show them pictures, they could have the loss explained and feel comforted by it. Well, not all books are created equal, especially in the "dealing with grief/loss/separation" category. But For Every Cat an Angel was absolutely perfect. The drawings were sweet and whimsical, and the spiritual fairy tale of the cat's angelic passage into life and into death was lovely and moving. Both comforting and a tear-jerker. Hey, and if you can't read it without bawling, you can always give it to the child and have them read it and/or look at the pictures. You just fill in the blanks afterwards! Imagine the relief of this over-emotional Auntie knowing she didn't have to sob all over the poor kids while explaining where the kitty went. Whew! Thank you to author/illustrator Christine Davis, what a perfect book.
For Every Cat an Angel.......2006-08-03
I had originally read "For Every Dog an Angel" and saw that it came in an equally loving Cat version, so when my brother's cat of 18 years crossed over, I just had to send his family this story as a consolation book...just perfect.

This book is terrific! Tons of color, detailed pictures. I am a collector, and use this book to help identify which tiny accessories I need to find or identify. Invaluable! The focus is on toys from 1964-1990 ONLY, so if you collect from other periods this isn't the book you need. If you collect Little People (pre-1988), you need this book! I hope the authors will update it, with the "new" Little People included in a future edition.

Book Description
The Ocean of the Soul is one of the great works of the German Orientalist Hellmut Ritter (1892-1971). It presents a comprehensive analysis of the writings of the mystical Persian poet Farīd al-Dīn `Aṭṭār who is thought to have died at an advanced age in April 1221 when the Mongols destroyed his home city of Nīshāpūr in the north-east of Iran. The book, which resulted from decades of investigation of literary and historical sources, was first published in 1955 and has since remained unsurpassed not only as the definitive study of `Aṭṭār's world of ideas but as an indispensable guide to understanding pre-modern Islamic literature in general.
Quoting at length from `Aṭṭār and other Islamic sources, Ritter sketches an extraordinarily vivid portrait of the Islamic attitude toward life, characteristic developments in pious and ascetic circles, and, in conclusion, various dominant mystical currents of thought and feeling.
Special attention is given to a wide range of views on love, love in all its manifestations, including homosexuality and the commonplace sūfī adoration of good-looking youths. Ritter's approach is throughout based onprecise philological interpretation of primary sources, several of which he has himself made available in critical editions.

The story of a family, the revelations of a history.......1999-09-01
Ms. Abinader has written a slice of history that teaches all ofus how a family's desperate fights for survival wins out over thehorrific clashes of clutures. Her book made me realize that what I thought I knew about the Middle East was simplistic. The complexities of race, religion, and geography are rooted in each family's struggle. No better family than this could teach us this lesson.
Recommended poignant, poetic ethnic narrative........1998-12-12
Elmaz Abinader has created a vivid and insightful biography of three generations of a family's struggle to define itself amid the dislocation and challenges of the first half of the 20th century. Her characters are strongly drawn and distinctive, reflecting values so typical of the Lebanon and other communities where family and kinship are both strength and obstacle.
Elmaz has a particularly strong feeling for her women. They are sometimes overwhelming and tedious in their ability to bear pain, rationalize hurt, support erring spouses, and recognize flaws in others. The men do not hold up as well. Despite some heroic moments in fleeing from persecution and making new lives in America, in general, the men are not as spiritually hardy or as forebearing as the women. There is a strength and lyricism in these pages that goes beyond another ethnic narrative. Elmaz' grounding as a poet has served in well in unfolding the dramatic and incremental movement of these families towards a conclusion that renews again the wheel of life.
Well-done.
