The book is very good. It is a little different than the t.v. series but it a good book with lots of little intrigues going on in the village. Of course CID Barney solves the mysteries. He is a well rounded person in the series so I enjoy the series.

If you like "Midsomer Murders" you will like the Inspector Barnaby books by Caroline Graham. The "Midsomer Murders" series is loosley based on Graham's mysteries. You will find the character of Sergeant Troy is quite different in the television show. He is much more likable. I enjoy both the books and the show. Some people are turned off by the character of Troy, and that makes them dislike the books. I think the people in the series are very human. Some are fine and admirable, some are dreary, some are condescending (this is England, after all), some are nazis and chauvenists. Just like real life. I think the "cozy" provides a sampler of characters in the charming setting of the English village, otherwise there would be no story. Just scenery. So don't hate the books just because Troy is repellant. It is kind of different to get inside the mind of someone not so nice. "Faithful Unto Death" is my favorite Inspector Barnaby book. It is quite complicated, and I very much like the characters in this book. It is very good "cozy" reading, and much more intellectual and complex than my other favorite, Agatha Raisin (by M.C. Beaton).

Delightful, nasty little English country mystery.......2005-05-02

Another English inspector mystery starring Chief Inspector Barnaby, this one is a bit of a departure for Caroline Graham. All of the usual characters are still in play here: the villages of Ferne Basset and Fawcett Green, the town of Causton, Inspector Barnaby, his faithful-yet-shallow-yet-extremely talented sidekick Troy, and the usual CID cronies. This book is especially twisty and turny and a very fun ride. I tend to associate Caroline Graham with more straightforward, Agatha Christie-type whodunits, which have fun twists but not at every turn, for heaven's sake! The local village characters are outrageously well drawn; we've all had neighbors like some of these and Graham has captured all of them most perfectly. I didn't see the ending come on this one but I had my suspicions, which went back and forth for the whole book. Such is the good writing where you are forced to glance at everyone in the book with a jaundiced eye!

A Most Wonderful Depiction!.......2003-02-20

Caroline Graham is often referred to as a modern-day Agatha Christie. Certainly her characters, humour and carefully crafted mystery story lines are reminiscent of the great Christie. But her books are also quite different. We don't see the detail in Christie's books that we see in Graham's. This particular book is funny and complex. It is also one of the best descriptions of a psycopathic personality that I have ever read. And it's done with so much class! Barnaby seems to have finally met his match with this villain, and you will have to read it to find out how.

Not only does Caroline Graham weave a great yarn, her characterizations are hilarious. This is a very entertaining who-done-it. If you appreciate English humor, this is the mystery for you!

Celtika and Iron Grail.......2005-09-14

Any fan of mythology will love this book. Brilliantly blends ancient Greek heroes with Arthurian Heroes and a Celtic backdrop. Fast moving story with larger than life characters. I wouldnt spoil the story for anyone but this is a must for any fantasy reader. The only fly in the ointment was Mr Holdstock's chronological displacement of Greek mythological events. The Argonauts came first and then the Trojan War because one of the argonauts was Peleus, Achilles father. In fact it was Peleus' wedding that leads indirectly to the Trojan war. When Eris was not invited to the festivities she cast a gold apple to the guests which was to be given to the fairest. That apple became the prize that Paris later awarded to Aphrodite in exchange for Helen of Sparta. That being said it in no way spoiled the story any more than the changes made to the recent movie Troy. I am eagerly awaiting the third book.

delightful fantasy.......2004-03-06

Seven hundred years have passed since Merlin and Jason (see CELTIKA) searched for the Golden Fleece, but now the magician resides in Alba where he receives three warnings including one about a man who wants him dead for betrayal. Also Merlin is warned to beware of a being used by a man and a ship that is more than a ship.

Merlin travels to Ghostland to rescue the children of the warlord Urtha at about the same time that Jason sailing the Argo arrives in Alba still seeking his son Kinos the "Little Dreamer" after failing in his reconciliation with his older boy. Merlin joins Jason on his quest to the Otherworld, where the latter's wife Medea probably has hidden Kinos from him. Jason believes the Mage is assisting him out of guilt because Merlin's first love Medea faked the deaths of the sons she had with Jason. Still the Argo captain wonders if he can trust the magician once they locate Medea who may have Merlin under her spell.

Combining English and Greek mythology, Robert Holdstock provides the audience with a delightful fantasy as the audience will enjoy the exploits of Merlin and Jason as they struggle to find the lost lad. Though some of the early fantasy scenes seem unnecessary, this epic tale is exciting non-stop action especially once Jason arrives on the scene. The second Codex tale is a treat for Camelot fans and Greek mythos readers who will want to hitch a ride on the Argo as the adventures in Otherworld are fun to follow as the two heroes each know that love can blind the purest.

This is the best sci-fi compelation that I have ever read. This collection is more then great science fiction, it proves that science fiction can have great literary merit. Most of the greats are represented here - Flowers for Algernon, The Star, Sand Kings... A great anthology.

This is an superb collection of memorable short sci-fi stories from such luminaries as Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, and Harlan Ellision. Each story has the incisive wit and starkness indicative of an great sci-fi story. A must-have, unfortunately out-of-print (I lent a friend mine and never got it back!)

Uninspiring.......2007-02-26

The author actually recommends a birthday party at McDonald's. Then she assumes we all have silk flowers at home to decorate for a party. The book is outdated and boring. There are absolutely no pictures in the book. I would only recommend this book if you have no experience in party planning and are looking for a drab, run of the mill party that looks as though you stopped at the store Party City to decorate!

Party Planning 101, 201 and the Graduate Course.......2006-07-11

This is the most creative, realistic, inspiring party planning book I have seen! It covers all sorts of parties from Baby showers to retirement banquets and everything in between.

Part 1 of the book covers party planning basics - the where, when, how and why as well as brief chapters on children's and adult party games.

Part 2 covers the holidays - practically every holiday you would want to celebrate. New Years, Christmas, and Halloween are of course included, but so are Chinese New Year, May Day, Mother's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Labor Day, and Kwanzaa.

Part 3 includes life event parties like baby showers, engagement parties, family reunions, housewarming, wedding, and farewell.

Parts 4, 5 & 6 cover birthday parties; children's teens, and adults.

Parts 7, 8 and 9 are may favorite! These are the chapters that pull this book apart from all other party planning books - creative and well-thought-out plans for those of us who love to bring our friends together not just when we have to, but because we WANT to. These are parties just for the sake of fun - food themed parties like wine-tasting and progressive dinners; creative parties like scavenger hunts and mystery nights.

Part 10 covers business functions and Ms. Warner actually makes them sound not horrible.

Part 11 includes menus and recipes.

This book offered many tips on many different themes in parties. Although, it seems that Diane is more oriented with weddings, she tends to have quite a few chapters on weddings in this book. She does, however, have good ideas for barbeques, post-prom parties and random special events.

I've had a few parties this past year, and I've used her organizers (checklists, etc.). I found them quite helpful. They were very simple. They helped me have everything right in front of me while working on other aspects of the party.

As a features writer for a local paper, I've seen lots of different party planning books. Warner's is certainly among the best, with a layout that makes info easy to find and lots of more creative ideas.

This is a good parakeet ownership book for beginner parakeet owners, but some information seems to be outdated. I had questions after reading the book that were not answered in the text.

We bought five parakeet care books after looking at a bunch of them. Of the five, this is the best.

The information is extensive, accurate, and up to date. The glossy photos are great. Most of the stuff we have learned in our intense initiation is contained in this book. This remains our go-to resource for parakeet questions.

Everything you need to take care of your little Budgie..........2005-01-09

Matthew Vriends, consulting editor for THE COMPLETE BOOK OF PARAKEET CARE and a Veterinary and Bird Breeder from the Netherlands has written many books on Companion Parrots, as have authors Annette Wolter and Monika Wegler. Their book about parakeets really covers the "betcherrygah" or budgie, a type of Australian parakeet, and includes much more material than any of the other parakeet books I've read to date, and I believe it deserves the sobriquet `comprehensive'. The book includes a good deal of the information found in other books by Vriends and Wolters on basic bird care and breeding, as well as much specific information about parakeets or budgies divulged by Wolter and Wegler who appear to keep companion parakeets or budgies indoors (Vriends raises birds in an outdoor aviary).

The book includes dozens of beautiful photos and sections covering parakeets and human children, setting up parakeet accommodations for a pair (they hate to live alone) health care and diet, breeding and baby bird care. The photos show the various colors of budgies generated by breeders like Vriends as well as action shots of budgies in all phases of living in your home - from flying around a `bird-proof' room to courting rituals with a mate. The authors have created a `check list' the potential parakeet owner can use to determine if he or she can live with the requirements of keeping a companion budgie. Among other things, they stress that parakeets are probably better off spending more time outside the cage than in it, so if you are thinking about living with a parakeet you should consider whether or not you can put up with with the occasional bird dropping from a soaring feathered friend. Photos and text describe how to build a bird tree from which your birds can use to launch their explorations as well as return to enjoy a tasty snack of various vegetables and/or fruits.

If you can buy only one parakeet (budgie) book get this book before you buy your parakeet. The book is suitable for children ages 6-8 or older as it includes text in 10p. font and plenty of photos describing budgie behavior.

Very Practical and Easy to read for all ages.......2003-10-25

We bought a couple of parakeets for our 11 year old daughter (a real Southern Belle). The birds and book were a birthday present and knowing absolutely nothing about them, this book has been a great help. Our daughter read it and enjoyed it. Easy to read, for all ages. It helped us buy the cage, the toys, and the birds' nutrition and so on... She still reads it when she has a question (as we do also). It helped us when organizing our home decoration and candles to fit the flights of the birds. Being in a small southern town away from pet stores, we refer to this book often. Some dangerous, outdated information.......2002-12-07

Overall the book is okay.
The playtree idea was very helpful in constructing the massive tree I now have, the pictures are beautiful, and there's a lot of interesting trivia.

HOWEVER, some of the advice given in this book is outdated and is now known to be rather dangerous.

1) The offering of grit. Budiges, and other hookbilled parrots, do NOT need grit as part of their diet, as they hull their seeds. If they are on a formulated diet they also do not need grit. Grit offered to these birds can cause crop impactions and death. Given that it's not necessary for digestion, there is no reason to use it.

2) Sandpaper perches. Big NO! Sandpaper perches are very hard on the feet and do not "keep nails trim". Sandpaper perches are one of the big causes of bumblefoot.

3) The use of "bird sand"...see grit.

4) The implication that clipping a bird's wings is cruel. The risks associated with free flight far outweigh the risks associated with clipping. Flighted birds are more likely to become injured by flying into walls, mirrors, windows, doors, etc..true, they may know the house layout, but if something should spook them and they take off in a panic, they are literally flying blind.
Full flight also carries the risk of escape; being nomadic birds, budgies have no homing instinct. Once your budgie flies away, your chances of seeing it alive again are next to zero.
The biggest risk of clipping is the bird being accidentally stepped on, but if you keep your bird off the floor (and you should) this isn't an issue.

5) The advocation of a mainly seed or seed only diet. Seed only diets are dangerous to the point of being lethal in the terms of long term health. Budgies, when well cared for and on a good diet, can easily live 10-15 years. On a poor diet, cut that in half for the average lifespan.

This is a great idea & source book for anyone involved in commercial design. Creative lighting solutions from a variety of applications are presented, showcasing both the decorative fixtures and technical lighting considerations.

There are 35 case studies, each with 2-4 pages of outstanding photos and descriptions of the lighting systems used. These are broken into categories including restaurants, entertainment spaces, public spaces and shopping areas.

Most examples employ one of a kind custom designed lighting elements. How these were conceived & integrated into the overall design is described. Many beautiful fixtures, unique in form and function, are shown in the detailed photos.
