Book Description
From New York Times bestselling author LISA JACKSON comes the haunting story of an inferno that sears the night, snuffing out lives and dreams, and of a killer who goes unpunished....
White-hot flames ignite the dark sky, a killer waits in the trees, watching the mill burn, listening for the screams, the only proof that justice, long delayed, has finally begun. For journalist Cassidy Buchanan, the blaze is a living nightmare, a reminder of the horrible, mysterious fire that destroyed her wealthy family seventeen years ago. The tragic crime has never been solved, and so the whispers have already begun in Prosperity, Oregon - another fire, more deaths, and one common denominator - Cassidy.
Customer Reviews:
Engrossing and fast moving story.......2007-09-04
Wealthy tomboy Cassidy Buchanan fell hard at 16 for Brig McKenzie, a lothario from the wrong side of the tracks hired to break her unruly horse. Her older sister Angie would do anything to have sexy Brig in her bed, but it's Cass that Brig has eyes for. When Angie and one of her suitors is killed in a fire, Brig flees the ranch, convinced he'll be the primary suspect (whch turns out to be correct, as no other suspect is considered or investigated). Fast forward 17 years, and another suspicious fire has occurred on the property. Cass in now married to Brig's older brother Chase, who has always been driven to surpass his humble roots and the marriage is on the rocks. When she learns that Chase and an unidentified man were injured in the fire, she races to Chase's side, offering to help nurse him to health. She suspects that the other victim, who soon succumbs to his injuries (with the help of the arsonist responsible for both fires) is Brig, and mourns the loss of her true love while nursing his brother back to health, and suddenly feeling an intense connection to her once estranged husband.
"Final Scream" is a repackaged and expanded version of the previously released novel "Intimacies" which was penned by Jackson back in 1995. Half of the book is spent in 1977, building the relationship of Brig and Cassidy, as well as setting the stage for what a nasty family Cassidy came from. Love, lies, deception, infidelity, and incest rule in this story, with a haiku pulled at the end to identify the arsonist. It's a long book (coming it at nearly 600 pages), but pretty engrossing once you get involved in the story; it could have been trimmed at least 150 pages and still maintained the romance and suspense. I would have preferred that Jackson tighten rather than expand the story. But despite its length, it's an intriguing and fast moving story.
A lot of suspense, lots of pages.........2007-08-30
Final Scream is the fourth book that I have read by Lisa Jackson. I like to read her books because I know that it will have alot of suspense and mystery.
The story is mainly about the Buchanan Family and Brig McKenzie. Cassidy Buchanan is a rich girl from a 'normal' family, and Brig is the poor boy from a trailer. He is older than Cassidy, but there is an attraction between them.
I did find that the book was too long, and I thought that there was alot of pages taken up in laying the history of the story for the characters. Some things were hard to believe, while others were just plain sick.
Things I question: If Cassidy wasn't in love with Brig's brother, why did she marry him? Why was someone always getting pregnant, drunk, or living a double life?
Things I had a problem with: I didn't like the character of Cassidy that much. Despite her weird family, I lost alot of sympathy that I had for her when it seemed that she was using Brig's brother. This is the second book that I have read by Lisa that has the 'mystical crazy person'-Brig's mother, as a Native American. Since this is the second book that I have read of hers where this is the case I was a little offended. Being part Native American might have something to do with it, but that's my opinion. Maybe in the next book, the crazy person will be of another ethnic group. My fingers are crossed!
I like most of Lisa's books, and I think she has a great talent for description and suspense. But this was not one of her best books.
Final Scream was a great read!.......2007-02-02
This book was so good, I woke up early and stayed up as long as I could at night to read it. The characters were very real, and Brig is such a cool dude. Cassy was cool too, and I knew they'd wind up together at the end. It was shocking to find out that Brig had been posing as Chase after that second fire. What a wonderful, fast paced story. I'd recommend it to anyone. Thanks Lisa Jackson, for another great story!
Didn't want to put it down!.......2006-04-04
From start to finish I didn't want to put Final Scream down. I loved it. Granted I figured out parts before they were actually told I still loved the characters and the book as a whole. Cassidy and Brig are meant to be together.
Improved? I don't think so.......2006-02-14
Unfortunately I missed the'reprint' on the book cover. As I started to read, I thought, this sure is familiar. Then I found the 'reprint'. The longer I read and started skipping pages to get the end faster, the less I thought the additions were any improvement on the old book. This clunker just kept going and going and going and going...nowhere. Don't even waste your time if you are loaned a copy. This book isn't worth the time to turn the pages.

Customer Reviews:
Crab Sledding and Overreacting.......2006-12-13
The novel starts out well, the Enterprise finds a major artifact on a distant world and investigates. Then they go through the window and turn into crabs.
Now, that in itself isn't a story killer. However, these crabs culture is explained over and over for the next hundred or so pages, with some salvation in short chapters where Spock can't understand the totally alien technology.
It gets boring very fast. I wanted to yell to the author, "enough! I get it...they are xenophobic and have color/movement based language!"
Speaking of boring, the story is very non-dramatic. Spock tries to decipher the technology while Kirk/crab slides down hills on his back chasing a female crab.
I would have given this story 2 stars because it was boring but not bad...until the end. The post story briefing is, to put it mildly, stupid. Without giving it away for those determined to read this, the ending is somewhat like if, having seen a horror movie and deciding that it was so bad you will never watch a movie again. There is a massive overreaction to the events in the story and to the artifacts. It also felt like the author was tired of his/her own story and decided to just be done with it.
There are tons better Trek novels, don't waste your time on this one.
Not Worth Reading.......2005-03-02
Star Trek novels are certainly not works of creative genius or high literary quality, but they are generally fun to read. "Windows on a Lost World," however, was not. Many of the beloved Star Trek characters, Dr. McCoy and Chekov in particular, behave in ways that run counter to their carefully developed personalities. The plot device of having main characters turn into crabs wears thin quickly. There are some fairly major holes in the plot as well.
My wife and I have read many Star Trek novels over the years, and we both agreed that "Windows on a Lost World" is by far the worst.
Fascinating story, extremely well told........2004-09-04
There are flaws; how the alien race can have a "name" for themselves that translates into a verbal sound (Kh!lict) when their language has no sounds, but is one of color and movement, is a question I find unanswerable. Still, there are relatively few such flaws in an otherwise exquisite story. Good pacing, good characterization, fascinating plot hook. One of the best. But in spite of the cover, don't expect Chekov to play a major role, he really doesn't. This is a classic Kirk/Spock story.
A Trek book with a unique perspective........2004-01-04
This is the story of an archaeological mission that goes spectacularly and uniquely wrong. The crew discover a transporter-like device that converts Kirk, Chekov and several others into the long-dead aliens that originally inhabited the planet. Kirk has to figure out how to contact Spock from inside an alien body while Spock must decipher the alien technology and change the converted crew back before they go insane. The scenes with Kirk in the alien body are very well written and the slow unravelling of the alien society is well paced and depicted. The archaeological investigations of Spock are also written, although others may find them to be lacking in events and with too much time on descriptions. Stories in which the crew actually spend their time in scientific exploration are fairly rare, and this is a very good and detailed one.
Made Me A Bit Crabby.......2002-08-15
Windows on a Lost World is one of the more technical Star Trek novels. My background lies more with the humanities, so I felt the story dragged a bit, but even though I wasn't particularly interested in the anthropology, geology, and oceanography related issues that were dealt with, I recognized that it was well thought out and written.
A Trekker who is interested in such subjects will this a worthwhile read.

Customer Reviews:
The Book's Good, But Only Part of the Whole.......2002-11-17
...The anime series "Mobile Suit Gundam", (on which this manga is based) holds a Star Trek like place in Japanese culture, having spawned multiple sequals and many imitators.
Gundam moved the "giant robot genre" out of the giant robot superheros area and into the "giant robots as war machines of the future" mode.
This book is part of the continuing story of what happens when children at an obscure research post find themselves pressed into service as child soldiers.
This particular book starts as Amuro, the main character, is not handling it well and has taken off with the war machine he operates.
I enjoyed it as much as the others in this series. The art is good. The characters work. There's more giant robot battles than I'm normally looking for in fiction, but honestly, it's a war story. What should I expect?

Customer Reviews:
Get to know the City by the Bay.......2006-03-03
I lived in San Francisco for several years and had to privledge to become familiar with the city's fantastic cuisine. This book is part of the Williams-Sonoma series focusing on cities with unique culinary traditions and letting the reader get to know both the city and the local food.
San Francisco is more than just a cookbook. The introduction provides an overview of the city and the important culinary influences. The book then dedicates about 40 pages to discussing local specialties, both their origins and how they're made, ranging through artisan bread, coffee & tea, beer, wine, dim sum, asian produce, local cheese and chocolate.
There are only 45 recipies, but they cover a wide variety from "steamed shrip dumplings" and "quesadillas with chorizo and jack cheese" to "slow roasted king salmon with braised lentils" to "buttermilk panna cotta." Insets scattered among the recipies provide backgroup information, culinary tips, or pairing tips such as dessert wines. Each recipe is clearly detailed and beautifully photographed. You also don't need to be a gourmet cook to follow the clear directions!
This book provides a beautiful and delightful culinary tour through San Francisco, and is well worth adding to a personal library.
The San Francisco Treat Courtesy of Chuck Williams.......2004-11-07
As a resident of San Francisco who loves his city, I am hardly the most objective reviewer of this book, but I do think this is a worthy if rather cursory overview of the culinary treats and idiosyncratic dining experiences that make up the best of what this city has to offer to local and tourist alike. Chuck Williams has established one of the more unavoidable upscale gourmet store chains in Williams-Sonoma, and this tome is the latest in a series of cookbooks focused on the premiere food capitals of the world. The first third is actually a well-organized explanation of what makes San Francisco unique from its culinary history to the distinctive flavors currently found in its major neighborhoods. There are sections on local specialties such as artisan bread, coffee, wine, Asian produce and chocolate. The breezy but informative text is by Janet Fletcher.
The recipes actually don't start until page 79, but the 45 selections all look tasty and not overly complex to prepare. I have always had good luck with the recipes in the Williams-Sonoma catalog, and this one is proving to be no exception so far. Personally I have tried making the orecchiette with broccoli rabe; the braised chicken with tomato, pancetta and zinfandel; and the stir-fried long beans with Thai chile paste. All were hits with friends, though I would think items such as Chinese long beans may be harder to find outside the major metropolitan areas. There are even snippets of local information interspersed among the recipes. The book is also abundant in nice color photographs courtesy of Jean-Blaise Hall, though I wish the editors would have included captions so you know where some of the places are. Highly recommended for those who left their palettes in San Francisco.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but lacking in grooming and body language.......2005-12-15
Based on other's recommendation prior to mine, I was looking forward to this as a definitive Miniature Schnauzer guide, but was somewhat disappointed in its lack of depth on certain subjects.
Not to say this is a bad book or has irrelevant information, but for new dog owners it has both its pros and cons.
As a plus, the explanation of the breed and characteristics is thorough, as well as picking a puppy and what to expect. This takes up the first 1/3rd of the book.
I found the grooming section to be great in some areas, but not so informative in others. There is very little information about cleaning ears (the proper and safe way) and why it's important (ear mites, bacterial odor, discharge, infection)....the best it says is pluck hairs and clean with rubbing alcohol in only two sentences. There should be much more on ear treatment. There is a section devoted to oral care which is good. This book more so concentrates on brushing the coat, baths, and clippering.
I would have also like to have seen more on body language as new owners may not always know what their dog is trying to communicate to them. This includes if the puppy or mature dog is not feeling well and what 'subtle' signs to look for.
There is a section describing ailments, parasites, and diseases...but not so much information on how to treat, other than: "See your vet." Duh!!
The only training really covered in this book is "house-breaking, which while important is one facet of a puppy/human relationship. I would have liked to see expanded discussion on other basics such as: Sit, Stay, barking, etc...
While I do recommend this book, it is a very high level look at the breed, but lacking in some detailed information on important day to day concerns of new dog owners.
Good Book, Could Have More Basic Info........2005-07-29
This book is pretty well done as pet books go. The photos and the quality of the paper are excellent. I was a little disappointed not to have an anticipated weight as a function of age or the weight range of the mature dog. I would like to have known how much and when (what hours of the day and how many times a day is best)to feed the puppy as he matures. I got all this info and more from the vet, but more detail in the book, of what to do and what to expect from the typical schnauzer from puppy to dog would have been helpful.
There is a lot of information about showing and breeding, but these are not my areas of interest. The section on Housebreaking and Training beginning on page 80, is well done and quite helpful.
Very helpful for a beginner.......2000-12-21
I bought this book because we were considering getting a new puppy and were interested in Miniature Schnauzers. I liked this book because it gave a brief history and evolution of today's dog which helped me understand more fully the personality of the Miniature Schnauzer. It also answered my key questions about selecting a puppy, as well as, crate training and housebreaking. The book will give you a general feel for what will be needed to appropriately care for this breed. I feel that after reading this book, I can better converse with breeders and am more informed. Since I haven't read any other books specific to the Miniature Schnauzer, I cannot compare to other sources. But I have found it more than adequate for my current need - preparation for purchasing a puppy. One final comment, the book has glossy pages and has plenty of supplemental color photographs. I particulary enjoyed the photographs of a variety of dogs of this breed - it helps me tremendously in the selection process.

Book Description
Frederick J. Kiesler was an architect, sculptor, painter, designer, and art historian. He was tireless in his pursuit of a radical new concept of interior spaces: his dream was a polydimensional living space, an organic continuum in which color, form, and light, combined with magical and mythical themes, would create a new cosmos. His so-called Endless House, imagined and designed in the 1950s, though never realized, stayed with him all his life, and has fascinated and influenced other architects for decades. Endless Space reconstructs Kiesler's ideals of living and his concept of modernity with extensive illustrations from Kiesler's archives and texts about his theories and career. An essential addition to the history of 20th-century architecture and design.

Book Description
One of the most striking and beautiful periodicals on newsstands today, Harper's Bazaar, was relaunched last winter under Editor-in-Chief Glenda Bailey and Creative Director Stephen Gan. A stunning series of art and prose from the magazine is collected here in an exquisite calendar. Each month, Just Like a Woman featured original works by great artists and writers, capturing the essence of woman. Artists including Tina Barney, Tracey Emin, Nan Goldin, Alex Katz, Tracey Moffatt, Mariko Mori, John Wesley, Sam Taylor-Wood, Richard Phillips, Kiki Smith, and Lisa Yuskavage each contributed an image of a woman that conveys notions of femininity. And in response, such renowned writers as Ann Beattie, Jennifer Egan, Nora Ephron, Helen Fielding, Hanif Kureishi, Rick Moody, Neil LaBute, and Jane Smiley each composed an original piece of writing. All proceeds from this original production will benefit victims of terrorism.
Introduction by Glenda Bailey.

Book Description
In this evocative memoir, Brent Staples poses some compelling questions: Where does the family end the self begin? What do we owe our families and what do we owe ourselves? What part of the past is a gift and what part a shackle?
As the oldest son among nine children, Brent grew up in a small industrial town near Philadelphia. Scholarship opportunities pulled him out of the black world where he had grown up into a world largely defined by whites. Meanwhile, as the industries that supported his hometown failed, and drug dealing rushed in to fill the economic void, news of arrests and premature deaths among Brent's childhood friends underscored his precarious perch in a mostly white environment. The death of his younger brother -- a cocaine dealer murdered by one of his "clients" -- propelled Brent into a reconsideration of his childhood that offers vivid portraits of family values that supported, pressures that tore apart, and the appeal and pain of living as an adult in a world that was literally and figuratively miles away from the one he knew as a child.

Parallel Time.......2006-10-27
New York Times editorial writer Brent Staples tells the incredible stories of living life as a young black man in America in his memoir, Parallel Time. Staples uses incredible detail of both physical surroundings and human emotion as he paints a clear and relatable image of his youth. His honest description of his own naiveté and foolishness leads the reader to trust and care for his character as he struggles with the issues of family, romance, and independence.
Growing up with a drunken father, several moves from house to house, grocery store debt, and a drug dealing brother, Staples has no shortage of material to write about. He chooses his scenes carefully, developing each major change in life through a series of smaller events that make his feelings more apparent. Instead of simply discussing the feelings of shame he had from leaving store after store with a mountain of debt from products purchased on credit, he tells a story of his most shameful moment to provide a more interesting and real emotion to his character. After accidentally entering the wrong store, Staples was forced to make small talk with shop owner. As he was leaving the shop owner asked him to return and pay his debts, Staples recalls, "My face was hot with shame" (109). Having an alcoholic father left Staples with a yearning for a father figure. He transformed men in his life into heroes, and recalls how foolish he was to mimic them. Staples often described his older cousins as perfect individuals, whose "coolness" he would imitate. It is this type of honesty that helps develop the readers' trust.

"Parallel Time" was an interesting book. It told a story about Brent's life and his struggle to be a writer. The message I got out of this book was that you are your own person and that you have total control over your life. I was able to read and visualize how Brent grew up as a black child, and how hard it was. By reading this story I have a better picture of how difficult being black in America was.

Parallel Time.......2003-10-22
Parallel Time was a very interesting book. I learned a lot about what he went through growing up. He had to deal with his father being an abusive alcoholic, and the obsitcals of growing up black and white. He went into good detail when he talked about each event that happend when he was young. he also talks about his brother being a drug dealer. He gives support of why his brother was already dead to him in his mind. He list all the things that were important to him. He was responsible in taking the role of his father. I feel that this is a good book to read if you are interested in seeing what it was like to grow up black in the 1960's.
Parallel Time.......2003-10-22
Parallel Time is a intresting book about blacks and whites. This book is about a black kid growing up in a black and white community. Brent Staples is good at expressing his feelings and thoughts. An example of this is he talks about his brother and also takes the role of his father. He also has a good way of showing the reader what is exactly going on. He shows detail in every chapter. This would be a great book to read if you are intrested in racism.
