Book Description
Former London policeman Alan Banks relocated to Yorkshire seeking some small measuer of peace. But depravity and violence are unfortunately not unique to large cities. His new venue, the quaint little village of Eastvale, seems to have more than its fair share of malefactors--among them a brazen Peeping Tom who hides in night's shadows spying on attractrive, unsuspecting ladies as they prepare for bed. And when an elderly woman is found brutally slain in her home, Chief Inspector Banks wonders if the voyeur has increased the awful intensity of his criminal activities. But whether relatied or not, perverse local acts and murderous ones are combining to profoundly touch Banks's suddenly vulnerable perosonal life, forcing a dedicated law officer to make hard choices he'd dearly hoped would never be necessary.

The First Inspector Banks Mystery.......2007-05-11
Peter Robinson grew up in Yorkshire, and is the author of a number of previous novels featuring Inspector Banks. He is the winner of numerous awards in the United States, Britain and Canada, and in 2002 he won the CWA Dagger in the Library. As I also come from Leeds the background to his stories is something that I have experienced first hand and because of this I have a special affection for his books. However they would be first class crime fiction wherever they were based.
This is the first book in what has turned out to be an excellent series of crime novels, in fact I would go so far as to say that they are up there with the best of them.
There is a peeping tom frightening the women of Eastvale. On top of that two young hooligans are breaking into homes and causing mayhem and an elderly woman may or may not have been murdered. Inspector Banks is called upon to investigate these cases and soon realises that all the cases could be interlinked, but nothing is as simple as it seems for the Inspector.
Brilliant mystery and outstanding atmosphere.......2007-03-25
If you like James Herriot's novels (and who wouldn't?) and you appreciate a good mystery, then you're going to want to read all of Peter Robinson's books. Great characters, great atmosphere, and great scenery.
Lunch in the Queens Arms anyone?.......2007-01-07
The author builds up the scene with care and the result is that both the town of Eastvale and it's occupants are very realistic. Although Eastvale itself is fictious, being a Yorkshire lass I enjoyed the descriptions of the dales and the factual places that I know.
The plot itself kept my interest throughout and all the crimes were plausible which makes a change as sometimes although I've enjoyed a novel, the crimes can occasionally be a bit far-fetched for the setting.
I was on tenterhooks as to whether DCI Banks would betray his wife with the female psychologist, and the climax of the two main crimes put the Inspector in a dilemma which was expertly done.
I shall definitely read more of Robinson's work.
Not as good as the other Inspector Banks books.......2006-10-21
The story of this book does not hold up to the suspense of the rest of the series. I could not finish this book as the story simply wasn't interesting enough. The dialogue bits 'policeman vs psychologist' are simply ridiculous.
A Nice Mystery..........2006-10-09
Gallows View was my first inspector Banks mystery and I have to say that I enjoyed it thoroughly. A peeping-tom incident, and a murder and several house burglaries occur in the same time period in their quiet neighborhood, and inspector Banks begins to wonder if they are not related despite any apparent connection. Banks solicits the service of a beautiful psychologist to help get into the mind of the peeping tom and begins to fall in love with her. Meanwhile the pressure for him to solve the case escalates when it is his wife becomes the next victim...
A good read for fans of the mystery genre as there are plenty of twists and turns and the reader is guessing until the very end. Gallows View is definitely worth a view on a rainy night in my opinion.

Conan the Ape.......2006-04-14
Amen to killercroc. JMR does capture the personality of Conan better than anyone since Robert Howard. This, however, is not one of JMR's best. It's been about three months since I read this book and I can only vaguely remember what it was about. I had to look it up on line for a reminder. I would still recommend it as a solid entry into the Conan saga. Again, as long as Conan keeps on moving through the world Howard created, opening that world up to us with each unfolding chapter, then you will be a satisfied reader.
There is nothing bad to say about this book.......2002-08-01
As one of the reviewers said already, Roberts portreys Conan as a barbarian who is more civilized than the so called "noble" people that surround him. That aspect is shown in every one of Roberts novels. In my opinion he is the only author that does not destroy the image of Conan that was created by Robert Ervin Howard.
In this book Conan travels far south to recover mysterious treasure of Python. Less you know about this book, will make the reading more interesting....Very Highly recommended
A Fabulous Journey..........2000-05-09
This is maybe my favorite non-Howard Conan adventure. We get to follow Conan and company on a great voyage through Stygian waters, then into the Black Kingdoms, into the heart of a decadent kingdom...
With this book, Roberts proves himself Howard's equal in action sequences, but there's more to a Conan story than swordplay. Roberts portrays Conan as having his own sense of nobility and honor, and he endows the supporting characters with their own motivations and traits. By the end of the book, you are almost sad to see these characters depart (one way or another). It's an impressive job, and I hope they reprint this novel soon so more people can read it and enjoy the journey.

Book Description
"Postmodernism is not a found object, but a manufactued artifact."
Beginning from this constructivist premise, Brian McHale develops a series of readings of problematically postmodernist novels--Joyce's Ulysses; Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow and Vineland; Eco's The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum; the novels of James McElroy and Christine Brooke-Rose, avant-garde works such as Kathy Aker's Empire of the Senseless, and works of cyberpunk science-fiction by William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, Lewis Shiner, Rudy Rucker, and others.
Although mainly focused on "high" or "elite" cultural products,
Constructing Postmodernism relates these products to such phenomena of postmodern popular culture as television and the cinema, paranoia and nuclear apocalypse, angelology and the cybernetic interface, and death, now as always, the true Final Frontier.
McHale's previous book, Postmodernist Fiction (Routledge, 1987) seemed to propose a single, all-inclusive inventory of postmodernist poetics. This book, by contrast, proposes multiple, overlapping and intersecting inventories--not a construction of postmodernism, but a plurality of constructions.
Constructing Postmodernism will be essential reading for all students of contemporary literature and culture.

Joan Nathan, an American, author of The Children's Jewish Holiday Kitchen, lived in Jerusalem for three years. Her review of Jewish-American cuisine contains more than 300 kosher recipes, with added information on Jewish dietary laws and Jewish culture, drawing from both Sephardic and Ashkenazic traditions. She gives Old World cooking extensive coverage, including foods from Bukhara, Salonika, Israel and Georgia, and writes knowledgeably of New World adaptations. The recipes cover Jewish standards, like homemade bagels and pickled herring and more American-influenced dishes like Cajun matzoh balls with green onions, or American haroset. The book won the 1995 Julia Child Cookbook Award in the American Category.
Book Description
This rich tapestry of more than three centuries of Jewish cooking in America gathers together some 335 kosher recipes, old and new. They come from both Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jews who settled all over America, bringing with them a wide variety of regional flavors, changing and adapting their traditional dishes according to what was available in the new country.
What makes Jewish cooking unique is the ancient dietary laws that govern the selection, preparation, and consumption of observant Jews. Food plays a major part in rituals past and present, binding family and community. It is this theme that informs every part of Joan Nathan’s warm and lively text.
Every dish has a story–from the cholents (the long-cooked rich meat stews) and kugels (vegetable and noodle puddings) prepared in advance for the Sabbath, to the potato latkes (served with maple syrup in Vermont and goat cheese in California) and gefilte fish (made with white fish in the Midwest, salmon in the Northwest, haddock in New England, and shad in Maryland). Joan Nathan tells us how lox and bagels and Lindy’s cheesecake became household words, and how American products like Crisco, cream cheese, and Jell-O changed forever Jewish home cooking.
The recipes and stories come from every part of the U.S.A. They are seasoned with Syrian, Moroccan, Greek, German, Polish, Georgian, and Alsatian flavors, and they represent traditional foods tailored for today’s tastes as well as some of the nouvelle creations of Jewish chefs from New York to Tuscon.
When Jewish Cooking in America was first published in 1994, it won both the IACP / Julia Child Cookbook Award for Best Cookbook of the Year and the James Beard Award for Best Food of the Americas Cookbook. Now, more than ever, it stands firmly established as an American culinary classic.
Customer Reviews:
The New Good Housekeeping.......2006-02-23
Fabulous cookbook! Great recipes with detailed instructions. You don't have to be Jewish to love the food presented in the book. So many variations on the same theme, you'll be amazed. Every recipe I have made has been tried and true, a must for every kitchen. I aggree with other reviewers that the book makes for wonderful reading as well, history, stories, background, a real keeper!!
Ess, ess, mein kindt!.......2005-12-08
News flash! Not everybody's chicken soup is the way your bubbe used to make! This is a great cookbook, filled with recipes from all over America, of Sephardic and Ashkenazic origin, influenced by where people settled. Gefilte fish is made with whitefish, salmon, haddock or shad, depending on what fish swims in the ocean, lake or river near by. There are latkes with zucchini and chili in Arizona and curried sweet potatoes in Flatbush.
Along with the recipes, you get history, culture and religion. What could be bad? Certainly not the Chocolate-filled Rugelach! Gosh, I'm getting hungry just typing this.
A Taste for Mind and Tongue.......2003-07-08
The receipes are functional, even if you are not a gourmet chef. But the stories behind them are just fun to read! A taste--for the mind and tongue--of what life was like for some of our ancestors. I recommend the story of the orange, and the recipe for cranberry applesauce!
An excellent cookbook to read and to cook from.......2000-09-30
What I love most about this cookbook is how international it is. I've never seen another cookbook with so many great recipes from so many different countries. It makes sense really, if you consider that Jews have come to the U.S. not only from Eastern Europe, but also from Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Cuba, Mexico, Morocco, Spain, etc. Consequently, many of the recipes, such as ceviche and chicken adobo, were a welcome surprise in addition to Jewish favorites such as knishes, hamantashen, and matzoh ball soup. Introducing most of the recipes are fascinating personal stories of the people who've brought their wonderful culinary traditions to America. Any food lover/cook will appreciate the heartfelt style of this excellent cookbook.
An engaging blend of food, culture, and history.......2000-03-27
This book contains user-friendly recipes, and most of the ingredients called for are easily obtainable. The majority of the recipes appear to be for dishes that are actually eaten by Jews rather than for ones that are definitely not part of Jewish cuisine although they have been passed off as such by some authors. Ms. Nathan is passionate about the food she describes and provides a generous amount of information on the history, lore, and cultural and religious traditions of the Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jews who settled in America. She also includes menus, a helpful glossary of Jewish terms, and many interesting illustrations.
I would also like to recommend "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen: A Culinary Journey through Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan," by Sonia Uvezian. This definitive volume offers superb recipes and fascinating text, including information on the region's minorities (particularly Jews and Armenians) that is not found in previous cookbooks.

A Must for starting your youngster.......2007-01-16
This is such an easy book to read and follow. It is extremely useful, no-nonsense training for a horse just starting off. Tom wrote an inscription in my copy of this book " may this book be helpful with any horse - donkey or mule - that might come your way" I think this sums it up in his own words. A Great Book.
I loved it.......2000-10-22
This book covers the handling, breaking and schooling of young horses. In a very easy to understand layout. This book contains some very good concepts and different approaches in the scholing of young horses. (It really helped me)

Olympic rider and World Championship bronze medallist Jennie Loriston-Clarke draws from years of experience to offer a wealth of sound, practical advice on every aspect of working with young horses- from early handling through backing, longeing, and long-reining to hacking and early jumping. Throughout, she emphasizes the importance of understanding that horses have individual temperaments and that training methods must be flexible enough to accommodate the various characters encountered. Moreover, she stresses that in order to produce a well-balanced and responsive animal, one must first win the horse's trust and respect. Handsomely illustrated, The Young Horse will help make the training process a pleasurable experience for all.

This detailed, practical guide to handling, breaking and training young horses, based on the experiences of a top trainer and world-class competitor, is an invaluable aid and source of inspiration. From early handling and backing to lungeing, long-reining and suppling exercises, all aspects of the process are covered in depth, as well as having tips and advice on how to tackle all sorts of training problems.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for the English rider!.......2004-01-12
I'll admit to being a little biased in the review of this book (and also the one by Pippa Funnell, "Training the Young Horse"), in that I'm from England and am familiar with the training methods outlined by these authors. Also, as an event rider I particularly like the introduction to cross-country fences, which I appreciate is not necessary for every rider. This book covers basic ground work, early lessons under saddle, beginning jumping, training cross-country fences, fitness and preparing for your first competition. Obviously since it covers so much material, it doesn't go into great detail. Nonetheless, I think it provides an excellent starting point and a structured program for your young horse. What I like about this book is that it gives a realistic insight into working with young horses, with examples of problem horses and how the training difficulties were overcome. It follows actual horses bred at the Catherston stud and you can see their progression throughout the book. With this book (and Pippa's) you get the impression that this is the program they follow and it works. The international success of both authors is testament to that. On a minor point - I always like a book with lots of photographs, it gives me inspiration for my day dreams.
Customer Reviews:
Nice look at early training of the eventer.......1999-12-22
With good humor, Strachan takes the reader through the selection, backing and early flatwork with a young event prospect. She then covers her method of introducing fences and XC obstacles. The book also covers basic fitness work and preparing a youngster for its first competition. A nice book, written with evident care for the development of young horses.

Lucky's Collectors Guide to 20th Century Yo-Yos covers the majority of popularly collected yo-yos -- from the first 1928 Flores yo-yo to modern high tech ball bearing transaxles. Customer Reviews:
The Value is the Book Itself.......2000-03-02
The first useful -and true- price guide for yo-yo collectors, it's also the perfect browsing book for us. The history needs some refining (following Donald Duncan's yo-yos after his company was taken by the courts is difficult, but the entry here was confusing even if you knew the background), but is at least 80% accurate. And you just can't beat those photos -- hundreds of photos of yo-yos forgotten or not even suspected! This book deserves to best-seller status, and to be updated each year. Buy several copies so Lucky can produce annual books for a living.
Hooray! Finally, the ultimate guide to collecting yo-yos........1999-06-04
The guru of yo-yo collecting and writer of the collectors corner in Fiend Magazine, Lucky Meisenheimer, has made the long wait for his book worthwhile. Truly he has created the "bible" of yo-yo collecting. History, Yo-Yos, String Packs, Patches and Pins it's all there. Anyone serious about yo-yos should have this book whether they collect or not, but don't even think about calling yourself a collector if you don't have this book.
A great gift.......1999-06-03
What do you get an 11-year-old boy who loves the yo-yo for his birthday, apparently this book. My son, who typically reads nothing more intense than a Batman comic was totally absorbed. I now know what my nephew will be getting for Christmas this year.
Into yo-yos then GET THIS BOOK........1999-06-02
You don't have to be a collector to read this book, just serious about yo-yos. The history of the toy, contests and manufacturers is fascinating. This is not a trick book, but if your love of the sport goes beyond knowing how to walk the dog then you must get this book.
Lucky's Guide is the Definitive Word on Yo-Yo Collecting!.......1999-05-23
Lucky has assembled the critical mass of information that the yo collecting hobby has needed for so long. Now we can finally place our yo-yos into the historical context and understand values, rather than blindly guessing. Along the way, Lucky provides the best general yo-yo history yet published, along with 52 pages of glorious color photos. A must for every yo-yo player, collector, or other interested party.

Handy Guide For Yo-Yo Enthusiasts !!.......2000-12-16
This compact 126 page guide to the collectible American Yo-Yo is handy to carry when you look for Yo-Yos. It contains an adequate history of the collectible, and nearly 250 large, full color photos. Photos of YO-Yo displays and packages are provided. The book covers from the 1920's to 1970's. Items are described and values provided. All Yo-Yos are shown in manufacturer sequence, with most major American makers being included. Novice collectors would find it especially useful
But still a great book.......2000-06-17
Seems this book has gotten some bad press because it's not as big or text-rich as Lucky's Guide.
Phooey!
Many of the photos (and it's mainly a photo book) are bigger and clearer here than in Lucky's book...and there are quite a few which aren't in Lucky's book.
If you liked Lucky's book, you'll enjoy this one too. If you're a collector of yo-yos or yo-yo history, you'll need both books.
Neither are as helpful as Bill Alton's CARE & OPERATION OF THE NOBLE DISK (the best yo-yo book on the market), but they have many more pictures.

It was a good start........1999-05-18
I agree with most of the other reviews here, not too great. I got this at the same time I got Lucky's Collectors Guide to 20th Century Yo-Yos and I have to say it is a pale shadow of luckys book. Chriss Cooks book can't have more than 40 or 50 yo-yos listed, in comparison Lucky's Collectors Guide has photos of over 1000 yo-yos, and thousands of prices, extensive history. Heck, its amost a half inch thicker and its 8-1/2x11 inchs Its huge. I think I would have liked this book a lot if I had not seen Lucky's Collectors Guide.

I agree with most of the criticisms aimed at this book. However, it is the only book of its type. This makes it the best you can get. It is, for better or worse, the best education you can get from the only book thus far on the subject. I would like to have seen more and better pictures, as well as an in depth history, but I have no regrets in buying this book. As for the prices being out of line, check eBay to see what people are actually paying. You will be lucky to find yo-yos as cheap as in the book! This book is, for now, the definitive book on yo-yo collecting.

If only the author was actually a collector..........1999-04-05
The prices listed in this book were not even accurate in 1995, so why should they even be close now?? The author was obviously not an actual yo-yo or spin top collector, and it really shows all through the book. They actually took a picture and listed a price for half of a Duncan Twin Spin. Not the whole top, just part of it. Didn't even seem to know what it was, either. If you are buying tops or yo-yos, and someone quotes prices from that book, run away.
Excellent reference book for top collectors.......1999-02-28
This book is an excellent picture resource as well as a price guide. It cover tops and Yo Yos which are devided into collectors sections. It is strong on Advertising tops but rather weak in the area of the really old tops (say pre 1930) This is not the fault of the book, as one presumes that few really old tops come on to the market. It is a must for any top collector considering the paucilty of books on this tiopic.

Book Description
Now, in his eloquent words, hear mega-football superstar Marcus Allen---Heisman trophy winner, Superbowl MVP, and record-breaking running back--tell his inspiring and unforgettable story, rom his triumphant rise to athletic stardom, to his rocky 11-year relationship with Los Angeles Raiders coach Al Davis, to his controversial friendship with O.J. Simpson, and all the high and low points in between.
Marcus on Al Davis:
"I could neither understand nor determine why Al Davis had declared war against me. But for all the motives suggested, none involved the possibility that the issue might be racial. Al Davis was many things that I didn't admire, but he was no bigot."
Marcus on O.J. Simpson:
"I am and forever will be forever be tortured by the loss of two people who were my friends; one murdered, one now forced to live a lifetime being blamed for tragedy."
Marcus on Football
"It teaches hard lessons about success and failure, joy and disappointment. And when played well, it has a poetry all its own."
Customer Reviews:
Marcu Allen.......2006-03-10
I really enjoyed this well written summary of Marcus Allen's life and his extraordinary career in football. If you are at all interested in football, this book would be a great choice. He starts from the beginning telling us about his family and his hometown. He then describes his life as a high school football player. He goes on to talk about the transitions he had to make on the field from defensive back to quarterback and then to running back later on in his career. Marcus really goes in to depth when he describes his years at U.S.C and the heisman trophy. He emphasizes his dedication towards his health and the team. Marcus says in the book that playing backup to Charles White helped him more because he got to see greatness right before his eyes in Charles. Charles describes the felling of being drafted to the Oakland Raiders. Marcus shows his dislike towards the teams manager Al Davis and describes conflicts between the two. Marcus goes into great detail of the games and the situations that occur off the field on both the Oakland Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs. It is very interesting to see the relationship between Marcus Allen and Mr. and Mrs.OJ Simpson. He talks about the OJ trial and how he handled it.
A GOOD LOOK AT A NICE GUY.......2003-05-18
I REALLY ENJOYED READING THIS. MARCUS DOES A GOOD JOB DESCRIBING HIS CAREER WITH THE RAIDERS AND CHIEFS. HIS CRITICISM OF AL DAVIS AND RAIDER ORGANIZATION IS EXTREMELY INTRIGUING. ALSO INTERESTING IS HIS DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE OJ MURDER TRIAL AND HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH OJ AND HIS WIFE. THIS IS WELL WORTH YOUR TIME.
A MUST READ.
Excellent insight to the Raider organization!.......2000-03-11
After reading this book, I was amazed at the things that went on between Al Davis and Marcus. How Marcus stayed in Los Angeles that long amazes me. This book covers Marcus' life before football, during high school, at USC and the heisman, and being drafted by the Raiders and then ending up at Kansas City. Marcus talks about the O.J. fiasco and how it changed his life. This book is excellent for any football fan and shines light on the dark side of being a Raider.
Sometimes Nice Guys Finish First.......1998-08-30
This is not your typical Professional Jock Worship book, primarily because (1) very little of the narrative is taken up with descriptions of individual games or plays, (2) Carlton Stowers is an excellent writer who portrays Marcus well, and (3) Marcus himself is an intelligent and thoughtful person who has had a fascinating life to date.
The real heroes of this book are Marcus' parents, Harold (Red) and Gwen Allen, who put the necessary time and effort into providing their children with the integrity that has made Marcus successful.
This is a book of contrasts and conflicts, the first of which are with Al Davis, owner of the Oakland Raiders. Marcus despises Al and is candid in describing his reasons. Anyone who is not familiar with Al Davis might think Marcus is exaggerating, but those who are familiar with him will find the criticism reasonable, if not understated. Corroboration for his descriptions of Al's eccentricities may be found in "Slick: The Silver and Black Life of Al Davis" by Mark Ribowsky [ISBN: 0-02-602500-0], a highly entertaining biography that is now out of print but may be available through a used-book service.
The other interesting contrast is that between Marcus and his friend O.J. Simpson. As Marcus described Nicole Simpson's death and the subsequent murder trial, I kept asking how these two men, similar in so many ways, could have ended up so differently. As I said at the outset, the real heroes of the book are Marcus' parents.
Best football autobiography i have ever read.......1998-04-25
He shows an amazing insight into what really goes on in the dirty world of american football. To the specifically vindictive nature of Al Davis towards Marcus, to the heartfelt news which so totally devasted him upon learning of the revelation of O.J.!! Written we a great deal of intelligence almost as if he was a best selling novelist. Definitely makes you support the Chiefs whenever they play the Raiders, even though i support the Seahawks. Maybe now Marcus has retired he will put pen to paper more often, I certaintly will purchase any of his material.

Book Description
Kelvin De'Marcus Allen has crafted a luminous narrative that speaks volumes to those of us who came of age during and immediately after the civil rights movement. Kelvin grew up as the "bastard child," the beleaguered fruit of a poor, single mother, and a father who treated him as if he were invisible. One of seven children, the struggling family lived in a rundown, wood-frame house with plumbing so bad the family often had to relieve themselves in a hole in the backyard. W.E.B. Dubois' "The Souls Of Black Folk" and Gordon Park's "The Learning Tree" come to mind while reading Kelvin's slim elegant volume. Some may think the comparison is a stretch - Dubois. The "agitator-prophet," and Parks, the quintessential Renaissance man, are two of America's greatest heroes - perhaps Kelvin's greatest work is yet to come. Kelvin De'Marcus Allen is a graduate of North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C., and holds a Master of Arts degree in Leadership & Liberal Studies from Duquesne University.

Book Description
Marcus Allen is not only one of the great running backs in NFL history, he is also one of the class acts in all of sports. He used hard work and determination to outperform players with superior athletic ability, and off the field he said no to the temptations of drugs and alcohol that seem to be ever-present in the lives of celebrities. When you add it all up, Allen is that rarest of commodities: a true role model. In Strength of the Heart Allen draws on his experiences to create a motivational book for young readers age eight to 12. In chapters such as "Family Values," "Heroes," "Drinking and Drugs," and "Teamwork," he shares stories from his own life to demonstrate the rewards of courage, determination, and humility. Throughout the book he challenges his readers to follow his example and to learn from his mistakes. He encourages them to listen to their hearts, build on their strengths, and have faith in themselves.
