Our hero in this novel is Maureen O'Donnell, a gutsy gal who decides to find out who murdered her married lover. While minimally helping the police to solve the crime she strikes out on her own to find the murderer. Well she is not exactly alone. Her drug dealing brother provides some help. Before you respond that it's good to have family support in time of need let me tell you about Maureen's family. Her father sexually abused her, and her mother is a hopeless alcoholic. Her sisters all think Maureen is a basket case. Well actually Maureen was a basket case, having spent time in a mental hospital.
So far this doesn't sound so good, does it? How do we identify with any of these people? Well we do grow quite fond of Maureen, and even find something redeemable in her brother Liam. We even get a bit gleeful in knowing that when she finds the murderer she is not just going to turn him in to the police; she is going to do him some damage. This is a fun mystery that proceeds at a quick pace. The writing is well above average. The author is a native of Scotland, and the book is full of Scots terms and slang, but not so much as to make the book hard to read.
More that a Crime Novel.......2007-01-21
The "crimes" are the events that light up the riveting character studies in Mina's trilogy, of which GarnetHill is the first. There are chapters that bring tears to your eyes with their sympathetic exposure of the odd and desolate characters. In my opinion, these books are close to poetry, and I enjoy going back and actually reading bits, like this wee bit from the third book:
Outside the night was humid and rank, Dark currents flowed down the road as night swirled into the city. A drunk man was staggering across the road towards them, shouting at the sky, shaking his fist at ghosts. A crowd passed him and a heavily made-up woman bent double, bawling at the man that he was f**ked up in the head, her voice cracking, her boyfriend dragging her away by the arm.
"The city's crazy when it's hot,' said Hugh, pulling on his jacket. "Some poor bastard's gonnae get it tonight."

Having recently read and enjoyed Denise Mina's "Paddy Meehan" books and her stand-alone book DECEPTION, I thought I would give her GARNETHILL trilogy books a try.
There is no doubting Mina's ability to write excellent and suspenseful mysteries and this first book in the trilogy proves that. Mina's characters are well thought out and are brought to life by her superior story telling skills. Maureen O'Donnell makes for a very unlikely heroine. She definitely has her problems, but is trying to rise above them in her own way. She can be unlikable and sympathetic at the same time.
My only problem with the book was the last 30 pages or so. When the rapist/murder is finally revealed, I actually had to go back in the book to remember who he was. Also, I was a bit confused in the description of Maureen's "preparations" for getting the bad guy. I honestly didn't understand what I was reading and had to read it a couple of times to figure it out.
All in all, this is a good book and I'm looking forward to reading the next two in the trilogy.

I bought this trilogy after reading another book by Denise Mina and I wasn't disappointed. I really enjoyed all three books but I suggest taking a bit of break in between them as they started to weigh on me. It's outstanding story and you reall feel for the characters.

Denise Mina has wonderfully described the darker side of Glasgow in her book, even though I haven't lived there for many years I was able to remember clearly my home town through her descriptions of the many areas she takes us through. Absolutely enthralling couldn't put the book down, make sure you read the two installments to this first book, Exile and Resolution just as intoxicating as Garnethill!

Set in a vision of Renaissance Italy that brings to life the classic mythology of the area, the story focuses on the "curses" so often brought upon progtagonists by their own actions and biases. It is supposedly only through traversing the Maze featured in the story they can be cured -- except that none of the pilgrims who have entered in the many years since the Maze first appeared have ever emerged from it again. The plots and subplots are as labyrinthine as the Maze itself -- no simple tale of sword and sorcery here. In Chaucerian style, each character of the story appears to represent one of the archetypes from traditions of the Commedia del'Arte, and each must overcome their own passions to grow into the role they are meant to play.
This is the first novel by this author that I have read, though I'd heard many good things about her. I most certainly enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to those who want a good read that's complex and challenging and full of substance.
Amazing Maze of a Deeper Discovery.......2002-09-06

"The morning sun rose above the edge of a quiet green sea. Bright rays of light speared the waters of the laguna and transformed the canals of Venice into ribbons of flame. Burnished water splashed over the mossy walls of the canals, scattering droplets the size of sequins..."
This kind of writing gets me everytime, and Midori Snyder has got it. She tantalizes the reader with each word, with every lush phrase, she seduces and entangles into the fantasy world of her labyrinth, and she engrosses mercilessly, leaving the world outside of her written page pale and distant for the time it takes to disentangle oneself from her story and close the book again.
Snyder's fantasy is one of many players, all varied in lifestyle and enchantment, but all alike in that they are somehow cursed. The young actor stutters and cannot speak his lines clearly, though his words ring out when he is feeling unthreatened by other males who remind him of an abusive father figure. The mask-maker suffers torments of thorns inside her belly that tear also at her heart with regret, keeping her masks from taking on their usual aura of life. A swordsman wins battle upon battle, grown calloused to the act of killing, yet finally longs to be free of such a destiny. A siren is cursed to leave the sea and live ten years on the dry earth in utter silence, covered with a leathery skin of ugliness. The poet fails to win the love and loyalty of his philandering wife with his verses and finally loses her. The priest repeatedly falls into a gluttony of sexual pleasures forbidden to him, unable to abstain from such temptation. And there are more. The fantasy is peopled with rich characters, each one more colorful than the next. All travel to Labirinto to enter the magical maze to be freed - somehow, they do not know how - of their curses.
Curses are not always what we think they are. In some cases, it is indeed "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it..." In others, freeing oneself of a curse is perhaps not so much wrapped in a magical spell as facing a fear and confronting it. In many, they find wisdom when they understand the reason for their own emptiness. In most, going beyond the superficial and delving into the depths of the human soul and its nature is the maze leading to a deeper love.
"A true hero is the one who knows that often as not the dragon is in the damsel and not the other way around," says one character. "Could you love your damsel, even if she showed you her fangs? Could you embrace what is terrifying in her as well as what is lovely? True love, Signore, must be willing to lift the mask and kiss whatever hides beneath."
Indeed, the characters find, each in their own way, that many of their curses, if not in fact all, are lifted by the "magic" of a freeing love, whether for one self, for one another, or for one's art. Even the poet who could not hold on to his wife's heart by mere verse alone at last understood that a woman does not so much wish to be loved through the lofty words of high poetry... as she wishes to be loved for the flesh and blood and spirit of woman, good and bad, found beneath the lifting of that mask, her lover being willing to kiss whatever hides beneath. She might be pleased and flattered by the pretty words, but she needs the man behind the words to be a real husband. The siren, too, finds her own return to the waters of her home even as she leads her love, a man from the land, to a heart freed to love fully only when he is able to remove himself from his past, his earthly miseries and worries and concerns. To gain love, he must let go, and he must risk.
"You must follow me as empty of experience as a newborn infant," says the siren to her lover. "Leave behind all memory, all thoughts of anger, of jealousy, of desire and longing. Leave behind, too, the fear of death. These are stones that will plunge you below the waves. Forget them, forget yourself, and surrender to my voice. That is how you will lose your curse and be reborn... it's up to you."
The journey to the center of Labirinto is a magical one, but no more magical than everyday life and our own everyday curses. Only Snyder transforms them, us, into willing travelers along the path her words lead us along for a literary adventure we are reluctant to leave. Curses. Because, but for several annoying typos missed by editors, "Innamorati" is a masterpiece of imagination and literary skill.
almost Chaucerian.......2001-11-06
The setting : Renaissance Italy, various real and fictional cities.
The cast: (and here's the Chaucerian part): A mask-maker artist,
a priest, an actor, a merchant, a thief, a prostitute, a warrior,
a Siren (well.. that's not so Chaucerian). They come from all
walks of life, but all beset by some 'curse'. Thus they
pilgramage to a fictional city with a magical maze to cure
their woes.
The story starts off with very seperate tales.. almost too hard
to follow as Snyder jumps from character to character to follow
their own individual tales. But slowly, they come together
as the routes of a maze come to the center. The story is
enchantingly different from the classical fantasy genre. Magic is
as viewed by old world Italians is amazingly real and quite
different from the magic in our present day stories. It's magic
that is out of our control, that cuts and mends in surprising
unpredictable ways, that is guided and quirky according to the
personality, the moral ground, the intents of the character
involved.
This book is well worth reading... it won the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award!!
Delicious Comedic Fantasy.......2000-10-18
Join a group of artists, performers, lovers and thieves to the maze in Labirinto. Along the way try on elaborate masks and find one that reveals your deepest desires. The characters burst with color and charisma. The food is mouthwatering and the scenery dazzling. You won't put the Innamorati down until you reach the center of the maze. Midori Snyder touches all emotions and leaves you hungering for more.

Entertaining allegory about the masks we wear [for good or for ill], and the curses that we carry with us. The writing is uneven, but the awkwardnesses [for example, I wish the editor had taken a red pen to all those frequent and irrelevant descriptions of food] are far outweighed by the extraordinary and touching moments.

The recipes are easy, some as simple as "Marinate fresh mushrooms in Italian dressing" if you don't have time to make their marinade.
It's an attractive book with delicate watercolors on every page. If you only want one book of tea-type recipes, I prefer "The Book of Afternoon Tea" by Lesley Mackley or "Totally Teatime Cookbook" by Helene Siegel.

This is a great little book... It includes the history ofteas, the tea ceremony and all of the related customs.
All of thepages in the book are watercolors done by one of the three collaborators, almost each page is different and just beautiful to look at.
After looking at the pretty pages you are encouraged to plan your own special "TEA" event. Included are four suggested menus; Winter Holiday Tea, Summer Tea, Formal Tea and Informal Tea. Each menu is complete and lists five to eight items. All of the recipes are included, even the obvious simple basic ones that most of us already know about. The recipes are simple and elegant, all seem fabulous and easy to make with ingredients most of us already have in our pantries.
The book is a collaboration of three women who are lifelong friends. One watercolors and hand letters the calligraphy, another is responsible for the watercolor vignettes and the third is the writer.

This book is without a doubt the best german shepherd dog book on the market today. It has a little something for everybody in it. History, training tips, pictures, its got it all. This is an excellent book recommended to me by my dogs breeder. I have read just about all of the GSD books written in the English language (available in my country) and this one is the most complete. She is good at discussing the differences between the German lines and American lines in such a way to be very non biased! Amazing... did not think it could be done. It walks you through the basics right through the more complex aspects of the German Shepherd world. Good stuff! Not just a must read but a must own!!

The German Shepherd Today copyrighr 1974.I raised and trained a wonderful, intelligent, obedient,GS by the name of Major and this book guided me through two rigid years of training for a dog that turned out to be everything that you would want in a pet. From a puppy to an adult the book takes you step by step in raising a very large dog and guiding him to be well manered and obediant. This well written book is right on target in giving the proper guidence.

I began collecting Blenko glass shortly before I bought Ms. Pina's book earlier this year. I refer to it often when I am searching internet auctions. Initially it helped me determine whether a price was in line with the fair market value. Lately I have been using it to determine to my own satisfaction whether an unmarked piece truely is Blenko. The pictures are very good quality. The only drawback to the book is that is it woefully short on text. It would have been beneficial if the book contained some in depth discussion of Blenko craftmanship and how to distinguish their products from the other WV glassmakers, especially since they all had a tendancy to copy one another.

This book is great for beginners who are still figuring out the differences between the many ink choices out there (a valid question!) and they will certainly find valuable information within these pages.
Those with a little more experience or advanced stampers will likely not find the inspiration for their next great project.

i use this book as a reference for when i am going to teach a stamping class. it has everything you need for the beginner and is full of fun techniques for the advanced stamper to relearn and to re-do some of their own art. i recommend this book to every stamper especially beginners.

Great Starter Book.......2001-08-05
Rubber Stamping is a creative, affordable way to personalize your gift giving and home projects. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For all you Carol Duvall fans, this book was written by Grace Taormina. You may remember her from several of Carol's segments. The projects are exquisite and full-color photographs accompany EACH STEP. As one who considers herself to be somewhat of a stamping novice, I get very nervous when I see a lot of type and no pictures (aside of the one which depicts the final result). This was terrific in that regard. I'll note that I did not read the chapter which covers the basics, as I have had some prior exposure (very minimal) to stamping. I tend to look more at the photos than the prelude.
Now on to the projects: What makes this book stand out in my opinion is the devotion it makes to crafters of different backgrounds who want to try stamping. For instance, I am a quilter, and I was particularly pleased to see a section devoted to those of use who love stitchery (entitled Stamping For Stitchers). I made a very pretty Victorian Posy pillow and a couple of quilted pieces from this section. Other chapters covered Paper Projects, Home Decor, Gift Ideas ,and projects for Holidays and Special Occasions. All in all I thought this was a terrific buy. I felt I got my money's worth after successfully interpreting and completing five projects within 10 days.

This is a terrific book on using rubber stamp techniques to decorate your home. It shows how practical and creative stamping can be for things other than just making cards. The projects are artistic have a sophisticated look and for the most part they are not too cutesy. Though sophisticated looking, with a little time and patience all the projects are fairly easy to create.
The book starts out with stamping basics such as masking, embossing, purchasing supplies and even making your own simple stamps. Principles of color and design follow. Stamping on various surfaces such as paper, wood, fabric, pottery, glass, clay, metal and leather are next. Then it is all put together in decorating your rooms. There is great information on assessing your room, making samples and working with patterns as well as creating borders, wreaths, and painted floors.
Over 15 projects follow including chest of drawers with elegant swirls, butterfly embossed velvet throw, lemon wall vine, paper mache bowl with leaves, orchard mini-chest and leather portfolio. My favorite project was the gorgeous Africa theme mica collage table. There are excellent step-by-step instructions accompanied by clear demonstrating photos for all the projects. A large photo the finished pieces as well as a complete materials list is also included.
A few patterns and a resource directory are located in the back. This book is a great source of inspiration and ideas for decorating and makes the perfect house-warming gift for the stamper in your life.

This book was obviously written by someone who hates Malcolm X. He had nothing positive to say only negative. He even went so far as to make the reader feel as though everything that Malcolm ever said was a lie. He portrays Malcolm as a person who hated himself but I believe it is the writer of this book who hates Malcolm and his family.
Questionable.......2004-06-23
This book is good if only for the insight into Malcolm's childhood. Other than that, it makes too many cynical conclusions based on whatever it is the author was trying to get across-- which by the end, is still unclear. Reading the introduction one would assume that this book was poised to breathe new insight on Malcolm the political figure and man. However, what you end up getting is more of a repetitious editorial piece. The author almost insults the intelligence of the reader by constantly rehashing the possible reasoning for Malcolm's every move. At one point, he suggests that Attallah was favored by Malcolm because of her light skin (like his) the way his dark-skinned father had once favored him. Perry also volunteers the very real and most likely possibility that Malcolm took this particular daughter to different events because she was the oldest of the girls. This is just one example of how he insists on giving the reader something to ponder on Malcolm's sincerity as a Black leader, tangible or not. There are parts of this book that indeed ring true with me for what I have interperted Malcolm to be, but these instances are too few and far between. I was in no way expecting an idealized picture to be painted here, only this book offers no real balance. Beyond this wounded Malcolm he avidly portrays, what else was there? Also for the attention he gave to alleged homosexual activity, arson, etc. he mentioned Betty Shabazz sparsely as if she held no importance in Malcolm's life. I found that fact very telling. After supposedly over 400+ interviews, Perry could only gather enough to give the mother of Malcolm's six children passing mentions. I actually got more of a rounded glimpse of Malcolm the man in the biography of Betty Shabazz by Russell J. Rickford. I advise those who are thinking of reading this book first to check out the autobiography w/ Alex Haley instead, then tackle this one if you wish. Even for all its omissions and probable half truths, you'll come away from that book actually understanding something. After reading Mr. Perry's biography, you get the urge to so say, "So?! What was your point?"
Approach With Caution.......2001-07-08
You have to question what Perry wanted to achieve from this book. He seems to have missed, or overlooked, all of the important issues that Malcolm X stood for.
He takes the word of Malcolm's detractors as the gospel truth and diminishes Malcolm's teachings and beliefs by portraying them as paranoid.
Perry seems obsessed with highlighting flaws in Malcolm's personality and uses this device to side step the vital lessons which Malcolm was trying to teach - lesson's which still need to be learnt today.
By all means read this book, but do so very objectively.
Too many unsubstatiated statements.......2001-06-05
I was not too fond of this book, not because I'm a Malcolm fan, but there are too many conclusions that Perry makes with weak evidence. Such as Malcolm's father (and Malcolm himself) setting their houses on fire, Malcolm's alleged homosexual activity, Malcolm asking the Klan why they allowed Dr. King to live, etc. etc. One could see why Dr. Betty Shabazz (Malcolm's wife)told Perry to get lost!
A Telling Tale : The Life and Times of Malcom X.......2000-07-07
Bruce Perry's Malcom gives an in depth analysis of one of the most controversial public figures in modern American history. Perry describes Malcom's troubled childhood in the Midwest, from his bouts with his father infidelities and his unexpected death -ruled accidental, but not certain-- to his, light skinned, mentally ill mother who was not afraid to keep her son in line by any means necessary. Living within a dysfunctional family and having no friends, Malcom finds himself wanting to leave his lonely and slow-pace lifestyle for the exciting East Coast. Moving in with his half-sister in Boston, Malcom becomes involved in criminal activities, from petty dope slinging and "runnin' numbers", to sleeping with white women and committing burglaries. Eventually he finds himself behind bars and from there Malcom X emerges. Known as Red, Malcom becomes acquainted with an inmate, a devoted follower of the Nation of Islam, who teaches Malcom that their is an alternative for black men other than a life of crime. Malcom X is introduced to classic literature, poetry, and Islam. The religion has a powerful effect on Malcom, who embraces its ways and ultimately becomes a follower. When he is released, Malcom X quickly works his way through the ranks to head minister of the most populated and successful Black Mosque in America. According to Perry, Malcom was not only a devoted minister to his mosque, but to several others as well. His superior, the honorable Elijah Muhammad, was initially impressed with the articulate, young orator. In time Malcom X rises in the movement. He grabs all of the headlines and from the media's point of view, becomes the spokesman for the Nation of Islam. Eventually, Malcom breaks from the group and starts his own, which never gets off the ground. He was shot dead during a speech in Harlem, New York in 1965. Malcom X, though poorly educated and a product of a mentally and physically abused household, nevertheless took center stage and improved the quality of life for Black America. Bruce Perry gives the reader a personal account of one of America's enigmatic and flamboyant intellectuals of the twentieth century.
