Book Description
The tough neighborhood of Dorchester is no place for the innocent or the weak. A territory defined by hard heads and even harder luck, its streets are littered with the detritus of broken families, hearts, dreams. Now, one of its youngest is missing. Private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro don't want the case. But after pleas from the child's aunt, they open an investigation that will ultimately risk everything—their relationship, their sanity, and even their lives—to find a little girl-lost.
Amazon.com
Cheese Olamon, "a six-foot-two, four-hundred-and-thirty-pound yellow-haired Scandinavian who'd somehow arrived at the misconception he was black," is telling his old grammar school friends Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro why they have to convince another mutual chum, the gun dealer Bubba Rugowski, that Cheese didn't try to have him killed. "You let Bubba know I'm clean when it comes to what happened to him. You want me alive. Okay? Without me, that girl will be gone. Gone-gone. You understand? Gone, baby, gone." Of all the chilling, completely credible scenes of sadness, destruction, and betrayal in Dennis Lehane's fourth and very possibly best book about Kenzie and Gennaro, this moment stands out because it captures in a few pages the essence of Lehane's success.
Private detectives Kenzie and Gennaro, who live in the same working-class Dorchester neighborhood of Boston where they grew up, have gone to visit drug dealer Cheese in prison because they think he's involved in the kidnapping of 4-year-old Amanda McCready. Without sentimentalizing the grotesque figure of Cheese, Lehane tells us enough about his past to make us understand why he and the two detectives might share enough trust to possibly save a child's life when all the best efforts of traditional law enforcement have failed. By putting Kenzie and Gennaro just to one side of the law (but not totally outside; they have several cop friends, a very important part of the story), Lehane adds depth and edge to traditional genre relationships. The lifelong love affair between Kenzie and Gennaro--interrupted by her marriage to his best friend--is another perfectly controlled element that grows and changes as we watch. Surrounded by dead, abused, and missing children, Kenzie mourns and rages while Gennaro longs for one of her own. So the choices made by both of them in the final pages of this absolutely gripping story have the inevitability of life and the dazzling beauty of art.

Lehane in top form.......2007-09-21
This is the third Dennis Lehane novel I've read. I enjoyed Mystic River, but didn't care for A Drink Before the War. Lehane is in top form in Gone, Baby, Gone. The story moves quickly, the characters are interesting, and the plot is complex and well-constructed. Lehane deserves the praise he's received for his writing. After reading this book, you'll seek out other Lehane titles.
Probably the best book in the series.......2007-09-04
So I picked this book up again not only because the movie is coming out and I wanted to read the book again and have it fresh in my mind when I see the movie (I what to see what Affleck does with this) but also because it's a great book and I was in the mood for a modern detective story. And Lehane, is hands down, the best. I know people say Robert J. Parker is good but, to be honest, Spencer ain't got nothing on Patrick. Hell, he ain't got nothing on Bubba!
Gone Baby Gone is such an amazing, passionate, explosive, well-written, and heart wrenching book that if you put this book down and you aren't a Patrick and Angie convert, just stop reading.
I enjoyed reading it for my third (or fourth, not sure) time. Every time, I get something different out of Lehane's Patrick and Angie books. Each time the end result is the same though: satisfaction and a desire to read another one.
So... it's on to Prayer For Rain!
Dennis Lehane does not disappoint.......2007-08-17
I recently started reading Dennis Lehane, and he has quickly become my favorite author. I've read 4 of his books so far, and have not been disappointed.
The Best of the Bunch.......2007-06-17
"Gone, Baby, Gone" is hands down the best of the first four (4) books in the Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro series. Lehane certainly comes back strong after a weaker effort in "Sacred", the third book in the series.
Patrick and Angie reluctantly take a case to search for a little girl whose disappearance has baffled the police and caused a media sensation through out the city. Finally, Patrick and Angie have the chance to solve a straight-up case and feel good about the results. This is a Lehane novel of course and nothing is as it seems.
Lehane keeps the pace a little slower through the first quarter of the book, and the reader lapses into a sense of comfort with familiar characters and a story line that is more linear than all of Lehane's previous novels. However, once the violent action erupts before the end of Part 1, Lehane takes the reader through the uglier side of humanity and maneuvers the story through crooked streets before delivering the reader to the final destination. A damn good ride that is insightful, well written and packs a punch.
Besides the plot, that races full steam ahead, Lehane spends considerable amount of time adding dimensions to Angie's character. Angie for all her hard nosed will and determination to prove that she is more than a pretty blonde who can use a gun, melts away in this book and reveals a softer side of Angie that has not been revealed in the previous books. She is faced with situations that mark her as a woman, and she is as usual more than capable to handle herself in these situations, but Lehane adds a very real emotional side to Angie that adds such rich flavor to this character. It is this contradiction that makes the climax of the book all the more powerful.
Lehane takes his own sweet time leading up to the events that take the story careening down a million different twists and turns. The surprises are constant and very well done. The pay off is big.
The Answer: He wrote GONE, BABY, GONE..........2007-05-26
...The Question: How did Dennis Lehane top his epic DARKNESS, TAKE MY HAND?
Coming off the disappointing middle of the Kenzie-Gennaro series, SACRED, I bought my copy of GONE hoping the inspiration or motivation to produce quality work had not drained from his creative mind. So one day in class I raised my hand and asked, "Mr. Lehane, sir, can we get back to the good stuff, please?"
Mr. Lehane responded by opening the floodgates and giving the world GONE, BABY, GONE.
When I think of this novel, I think of all the things that hooked me to Dennis Lehane's work in the beginning, starting with A DRINK BEFORE THE WAR and climaxing with DARKNESS, TAKE MY HAND. What he excelled at in DARKNESS he perfected in GONE: Superb dialogue, characters so deep and real you thought you'd bump into them on the street, fascinating storyline, and a taut, twisty mystery that keeps you guessing, capping off with a shocking conclusion. These are the things that made Lehane's novels beloved in the beginning, and after fiddling around with a lesser story in SACRED, he finally got back to the good stuff indeed.
The best aspect of GONE? The emotional pull on the reader. Lehane doesn't flinch when it comes to making the reader address the uncomfortable questions presented by the characters' dilemmas. I cared about each character, bad or good, and the slam-bang ending made me sympathize with them--and consider the larger issue--even more. It offers no easy answers, and the decisions made at the end threaten Kenzie and Gennaro's lifelong bond.
The subject matter doesn't make this an easy story to read, but it's the best story Lehane's written to date, beating out even MYSTIC RIVER. Pick up GONE, BABY, GONE for a look at one of the best, most moving mysteries of the last decade.

An interesting novelization of
Beowulf, revealing as much of our times as of Beowulf's own. Godwin broadens the base of the poem, believably bringing in Norse myth; placing Christian coloring in context. The stylized structure of the story's progress forms a frame supporting more fully-fleshed characters than the economical language of epic allows, exploring the pressures of prestige-based leadership and the personal cost of the warrior code.

Lyrical and touching.......2007-08-08
"The Tower of Beowulf" is Parke Godwin's prose retelling of the Beowulf saga. Godwin attempts to flesh out the heroic saga with a more modern look into the minds and motivations not only of Beowulf but of the monsters he faces. Grendel's mother, Sigyn, in particular is given more of a back-story; as an illegitimate daughter of trickster god Loki and a giantess, she grows up in an illusional fantasy world created with the best intentions by Loki to spare her the grief of her true, hideous existence. This part of the book mirrors the sympathetic re-interpretation of the Grendel himself by John Gardner in his book of the same name and is very touching. Similarly, Godwin provides a glimpse into Beowulf's psyche; here he is imagined as a man who in his youth led a callow attempt at a raid that resulted in the deaths of all of his compatriots that now haunts Beowulf the adult and infuses him with a near suicidal desire to prove himself worthy of honor and respect by tackling ever-more-dangerous tasks. He battles the Grendel and Sigyn not because he is a hero, but because of his prior failure and cowardice. These twists, along with Godwin's elegant prose, make this a tale well worth reading. Godwin's imagery is vivid, from the blue-lipped Danish princess and her armed escorts gliding down the Rhine on a boat encased in ice, to the descriptions of Sigyn and Grendel's hideous forms. For anyone wanting an enjoyable, well-written and imaginative retelling of the Beowulf legend, look no further. Recommended.
Tower of Beowulf.......2003-06-24
A humanist retelling of the story of Beowulf.
This is a decent novel, though not as good as Godwin's more detailed work. It suffers from sticking too closely to the original text: Grendel, an attractive POV character here, dies early, and we skip from Beowulf as an interesting young man to an old one who has come to terms with all the personal issues that made him interesting. A less close adherence to the manuscript might have served the author well.
I didn't find Godwin's conception of Norse deities appealing; they are comic-book figures, with no numinous qualities at all. Boring.
The recasting of myths and legends in humanist terms is a tradition of speculative fiction, and I certainly think it's a valid one. However, I'm a bit tired of characters who constantly question the values and mentalities of their times -- lamenting the cost of being a hero, and so on. I feel that theme's a bit done with, and it lends itself to anachronism. My interest in the character of Beowulf here was tempered by my weariness with the "I don't wanna be a warrior" theme.
I don't entirely understand Godwin's need to insert Christianity into every historical setting.
Despite my quibbles, I think that overall this is an enjoyable book, lighter entertainment than some of Godwin's others but a reasonably good retelling.
Interesting Take.......2000-04-19
I'm not quite sure what to make of this work. It is an adaptation, in novel form, of the epic of Beowulf. It some ways, this works very well, while in others it doesn't work well at all. Parke Godwin specializes in retelling legends (Robin Hood, Arthur, St. Patrick, Beowulf), in a historical context, or at least a more realistic, lucid form then usual.
This book taught me more about the Viking religion of Odinism than I really wanted to know (at least, I think it did, as I have to take the book's word that it is accurately portraying it). It got into Grendel's head, into the dragon's head, into Beowulf's head. While they were all dynamic characters, at times there just wasn't enough. The story would skip forward twenty years, and fill in the intervening, sometimes relevant, events in just a few paragraphs. By the same token, the book would build up to confrontantions, only to have them be extremely short and abbreviated.
Still, Godwin did a masterful job showing us what {he thought} the values of sixth century northlanders were. He also manages to tie in Christian influences, add more depth to power stuggles, politics, and international relations. And the opening sentence says it all, "Before men reasoned such things could not happen, when all men knew they could."
An interesting, at times slightly boring, but ultimately satisfying book, this is worth reading if you can find it.
excellent.......1999-02-02
after reading the original this provided a very interesting view of the story. It facilitates a deeper understanding of the poem by exploring different interepretations than I would have found myself.
A realistic hero.......1997-05-18
Taking on such an old and simple story and making it interesting to an modern audience is a hard task. Beuwulf comes across as very realistic at the same time as he battles a "troll" and a dragon while the Norse gods are lurking behind the scenes. Grendel is not a raving mad swamp troll but a thinking and emotional being. Being Swedish and having quite a diffrent veiw of the barbaric Vikings (than in many other countrys) I find this book written by an American exiting. This is not what the old Scandinavia was like but Godwin makes it very belivable.

The more things change, the more things stay the same..........2006-07-16
Batman: Nine Lives is a DC Comics production from the Elseworlds line. Elseworlds takes superhero characters and tears them from their familiar continuity and places them in "what if" situations. This particular graphic novel presupposes that Bruce Wayne and his contemporaries are living their lives back in the 1940s (which is how it originally started anyway). The impetus of the storyline is the murder of the promiscuous, Kit Kat club manager Selina Kyle. Selina, it seems, has been privy to dangerous secrets, and her death results in a whirlwind of furious activity from the underworld denizens. Now, Batman must chase down treacherous clues and doggedly track down the killer. But even for the Caped Crusader, it won't be easy.
Batman - a down and dirty urban crimefighter - has always resided on the outskirts of the film noir genre. Only now, the creative talents have deliberately mined film noir in crafting this gritty pastiche. A profusion of dark colors are utilized, and much is drawn in shadow, to accentuate the bleak moods of the story, with the flashback sequences done in somber red/burnt umber tones. To quote writer Dean Motter: "Each page will be against a black surround to create the ambiance of a darkened movie theatre." Dean Motter and Michael Lark unfold a mystery that pays homage to film noir gems such as Out of the Past, D.O.A. and The Narrow Margin. The writing is accordingly lean and hardboiled, and the images are stark and stylishly, simplisticly rendered, somewhat recalling to mind the wonderful art of David Mazzucchelli from Batman: Year One. Other than Bats himself, there's nary a whiff of the superhero elements. This actually is more reminiscent of the Shadow and Spider pulp novels of yesteryear.
As in other Elseworlds offerings, some things are the same, some things are vastly different. Gotham is still steeped in corruption. Bruce Wayne is still the theatrical Darknight Detective - oh, maybe a bit more primitive in his crime-fighting methods and perhaps more focused and ruthless in his business empire dealings. Gordon is still Gotham's Police Commissioner. But, the rest of the cast are a tad off-key: here, Dick Grayson is an ex-cop turned private eye, with no sighting of Robin or Nightwing to be found. Barbara Gordon is his faithful girl friday; Selina Kyle, before her death, was a gone-to-seed club manager, who resorts to blackmail to maintain her lofty lifestyle; costumed villains such as the Penguin, the Joker, Mr. Freeze seem more like common thugs and gangsters. Killer Croc is a former circus freak now lurking in the sewer systems of Gotham.
The actually mystery itself isn't all that gripping, to be honest. Instead, the allure and fun of this graphic novel is in seeing these somewhat familiar characters doing their thing in this somewhat new 1940s backdrop. I get a particularly big kick out of our narrator, Grayson, as the somewhat mangy private dick. He is pretty much threatened and beat up for much of the story, yet he still presses on. Classic shamus behavior. Batman: Nine Lives is great, diverting stuff and is an ample tribute to the film noir genre.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book.......2007-02-08
I've had a couple of basic Wilton cake decorating classes at our local craft shop, and have been making cakes for friends and family for years, but not professionally. I considered making my daughter's wedding cake and so checked out dozens of cake decorating books from our library system. This book was so good that I didn't want to take it back. Even though I decided I wouldn't have time to do the wedding cake, I loved this book so much that I had to buy one for myself.
An Amateur's Opinion.......2007-01-10
I'm very new to the cake decorating world and needed the basics of making a good cake (being commissioned to make my sister-in-law's wedding cake). I thought this book was very helpful and fun to read. I don't think I could make half the stuff in it, but Toba gives good recipes and the basics of putting together a beautiful cake, which I found to be priceless. Another book I like is the Wilton "Decorating Cakes"...the ideas in there are fun and easy and were a smash when I brought them to different functions. Hope this helps!
Gifts for Family and Friends.......2007-01-05
I purchased both these books for my daughter and my best friend. The Well-Decorated Cake was beautifully illustrated and the tips were very helpful. My friend had just finished a cake decorating class and this book encouraged her to continue her classes.
Incredibly meticulous.......2006-11-04
I really enjoy this book. Toba has incredible patience for detailed work. It's not my favorite style but I can certaintly appreciate the talent. What I especially like about the book are the step by step instructions. I also tried some of the cake & filling recipes & they got rave reviews. I definetly recommend this book!
The Best First Book for Cake Decorating.......2005-12-05
After the reading the reviews on Amazon I was very curious about this book and then I found the book on google books.. This book is more than what I expected. I fell in love and rushed to buy this book. This book is easy to read with step by step color photographs and illustrations. There are tons of recipes at the end of the book. Designs are well illustrated on the book. I found only couple of cakes that werent well explained (still more than enough to get you started).. Bottom line.. This should be the first book if you are thinking to learn about cake decorating.
Book Description
This little book is intended primarily as a brief but comprehensive guide to puppy training. Consequently, it contains hints for socialization, temperament training and behavior modification as well as tips for teaching basic manners. Dr. Dunbar's lure/reward training techniques are certainly not limited to puppies. On the contrary, they have become the method of choice for instructing good-natured, but otherwise uneducated adult dogs.
Our best friendthe domestic dogis a social animal. It would be unfair and antisocial not to train it. How else could we communicate? Luckily, dogs can easily learn our language
if we teach them! Basically, training comprises teaching dogs ESLEnglish as a Second Languageso that our dogs will understand human words for doggy behaviors and actions.
Lure/reward training is de rigeur for training a wide variety of animals, including lions, tigers, killer whales, and grizzly bears, Over a hundred years ago, similar reward-based methods were the accepted practice for training all dogs and puppies. Unfortunately, in the twentieth century, the Trainers from The Dark Side inflicted a harsher regime of laborious, on-leash, push-pull, squish-squash, narrow-brained methods on unsuspecting owners and their dogs. Sadly, domination was the focus and the poor defenseless dog was viewed as an adversary in the training arena. Force is unnecessary and almost always counterproductive. Why treat your best friend like your worst enemy?
Welcome back to the historically-proven, so-old-that-it's-new-again, natural, common-sense, and enjoyable way to train your dogoff-leash, lure/reward, fun and games, dog-friendly dog training.
Dr. Dunbar's training techniques are altogether quicker, easier, gentler, more effective, and certainly considerably more enjoyable for you and your dog. And so without further ado, turn to the Good Manners section and begin training your puppydog right away. Lure/reward training techniques work like a treat!

Money well spent! A Must Have!!!!!!.......2007-08-22
All I can say is that this book should go home with all new dog/puppy owners! It really is a must have, it's exactly what Dr. Dunbar say's "Efficient, Effective, Easy, Efficacious, Enjoyable, and Expedient". It's easy for kids to use too.
Sweet and simple.......2007-07-14
My dog is a product of Dr. Dunbar's training techniques. He is a dream dog! Consequently, I give his books to all my friends and family who have puppies. These books are easy to read and follow and best of all, they work!
Easy to follow and understand!.......2003-11-11
This book is written in a way that is down to earth and easy to understand, even for a first time dog owner. Dr. Dunbar's advice actually works! Just follow it and be consistent! It worked for my dog, it can work for yours too! Great pictures and even a training plan. You need this book!
What a fun and colorful book!.......2003-08-01
This book offers tons of practical advice. It has step by step photos with captions that describe exactly how to train your dog. It is entertaining and useful, cleverly written so it can be enjoyed by the whole family, adults and children alike. We followed the instruction outlined in the book and by the time our dog got to training school she was the star of the class.

Book Description
For those with an interest in country furniture, here are 30-plus woodworking projects. They range from small, easy-to-build items like candle boxes and footstools to chests, tables and cupboards. Each is a faithful reproduction of an antique.
Customer Reviews:
This is THE book for country furniture lovers.......1998-10-18
The book details about 30 projects, some of which are simple enough for beginners to get to learn their tools (hanging display shelf, candle shelf) and some others are more complex and will definitely need more than one week-end to build(corner cupboard, narrow Amish cabinet, dry sink). At the beginning of each section, you get a picture of the original antique from which the plans were "extracted" and some of its history. You then get detailed instructions for building the replica.
The book also includes terrific "ShopSmarts" tips such as resawing techniques, raised panel techniques and antique finishing methods.
I'd only wish there was another book (part 2?) with some more projects.

Danger! Danger! Will Robinson!!.......2005-05-08
I borrowed this book from the library. The photos are good, the finishing instructions are decent, the tips are decent, the information about selling your work was inspirational, and the introduction to each piece is written nicely. But there was no editing made to the book, and it has created a lot of problems for me. I'm working on the plantation desk at the moment, and I've noticed too many errors in the text. I've spent many hours creating cut sheets to plan my lumber purchase, but only to find out the dimensions on the material list does not match the dimensions in the line drawings, nor do the quantities of the parts. The list is off by nine parts.
I think I would have saved a lot of time if I used the author's pictures and then drew my own plans with correct dimensions instead of spending many hours checking his sloppy writing work.
If I were the writer, I would be really be embarrassed to publish this book and be known for producing such inaccurate work. The writer should create a web page and publish his corrections to save his reputation.
Also, why is this book going for $94?? That must be an error.
Re-Building Classic Antique Furniture With Pine.......2000-12-13
The furniture is classic, The pictures are great, The dimensions and drawings, You will learn to hate.
Check each with care, Before you dare, To start cutting wood, Or 'twil come out NO GOOD!
Publisher and author should recall and make all corrections. I am disappointed, no more Mr. Howard!
Poor checking.......2000-12-12
Yes it has good plans. No they are not sized accurately. You MUST CHECK all dimensions........may the author cut his fingers off! or at least cut them....................
Building Classic Antique Furniture With Pine.......1999-12-19
This book has some very good projects for the average home workshop, but there are no materials list, only sizes for the various parts, which are incomplete. Some detailed drawings are also non-excistent. Some of the dimensions on the drawings are also inaccurate. Therefore, you must spend some time figuring out exactly how much and the dimensions of the amount of lumber you must purchase. Which can run into multiple trips to the store. Also you must adjust the layout of the part before assembly to account for the inaccuracies in the dimensions of the paticular project you are working on, which is also extra time used unnecessarily.
this book should not be offered for sale.......1999-09-20
Short and to the point the material list in this book is really messed up. I received an errata sheet from the publishers which when used screws up the cut list even more and does not cover all the mistakes in the book. I contacted the publisher to find out where I could get the corrected information and was told that the author would not give them that information. If you are reading this MR. BLAIR HOWARD and the information I was given is true, you should be ashamed of yourself. The publisher should have pulled this book off the market when it first was made aware of the problem. Oh by the way Amazon, you should not be selling this book.

Unattractive designs.......2000-07-21
I returned this book eventually.
This book covers some important issues such as selecting tools and lumbers, and overall has done a good job explaining the building steps. However, I found the majority of the projects "dated" and unattractive.

Just Do It.......2007-06-02
No more thinking, just pick it up. Even with the $130 price tag, it's way worth it. Like most, I missed out on the very limited first edition, but I didn't waste any time on this one. From the layout of the content, to the highly detailed pics, to the openning essay, everything about the book is full on mind boggling. Even the cardboard sleeve on on this thing is tight! Truly for those interested in one of the most soulful artforms.

Customer Reviews:
A New View.......2003-10-15
I've always considered my tattoo-less body a blank slate. An empty space on which I would inscribe (so to speak) my message to the world. After seeing this book and the background (behind the scenes) info. that comes with it, I now refer to my "blank slate" as a blank CANVAS. The incredible color and details of the tattoos featured in this book are a wonderful showcase of some incredibly talented ARTISTS of our time!
For Real.......2003-10-14
If you are truly interested in the culture of Tattooing, this is your backpacking guide. Suits Made to Fit has excellent quality photos of the work and commentary to keep you in "the know". Put down that mocha and pick up this book.

Book Description
In this biography, Ula Taylor explores the life and ideas of one of the most important, if largely unsung, Pan-African freedom fighters of the twentieth century: Amy Jacques Garvey (1895-1973).
Born in Jamaica, Amy Jacques moved in 1917 to Harlem, where she became involved in the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), the largest Pan-African organization of its time. She served as the private secretary of UNIA leader Marcus Garvey; in 1922, they married. Soon after, she began to give speeches and to publish editorials urging black women to participate in the Pan-African movement and addressing issues that affected people of African descent across the globe. After her husband's death in 1940, Jacques Garvey emerged as a gifted organizer for the Pan-African cause. Although she faced considerable male chauvinism, she persisted in creating a distinctive feminist voice within the movement. In her final decades, Jacques Garvey constructed a thriving network of Pan-African contacts, including Nnamdi Azikiwe, Kwame Nkrumah, George Padmore, and W. E. B. Du Bois.
Taylor examines the many roles Jacques Garvey played throughout her life, as feminist, black nationalist, journalist, daughter, mother, and wife. Tracing her political and intellectual evolution, the book illuminates the leadership and enduring influence of this remarkable activist.
