3 out of 5 stars an interesting message.......2007-08-06

I enjoyed "Hostile Makeover". Maybe not quite as much as the two previous books in the series, but well enough. I found myself agreeing a lot with the books' theme that the popular media glut of "extreme makeover" reality programming is more about pandering to the lowest common denominator and not really about helping people. Of course, our heroine Lacey is attractive and popular so it is a bit of a mixed message LOL. Byerrum does hit a clinker in the parts of the book about Lacey's mother and sister coming for a visit. Lacey seems quite hateful to them at the beginning. I have a feeling that isn't what the author was aiming for and that she was trying more for the indulgent amusement of Meg Lanslow in the series by Donna Andrews, but Byerrum has Lacey come across as rather nasty early on, which wasn't appealing to read (for me). Some repeated story devices are wearing thin. Lacey and Vic. Either make it a real relationship or quit dancing, the "suspense" is only annoying now. And at work, Lacey has obviously shown where her ability is, you'd think her boss would be glad of the improved circulation her scoops bring and embrace it instead of the patronizing "stay out of trouble, turn it over to the crime beat" schtick.

4 out of 5 stars Makeover Death .......2007-05-08

In this third book, "Hostile Makeover" in the Crime of Fashion series, we meet Amanda Manville, who went from an Ugly Duckling with a Heart of Gold to a gorgeous, Supermodel Difficult Diva. The "extreme makeover" happened on the Chrysaslis Factor, a reality make-over show. Lacey Smithonian decides to interview Amanda, but she is looking for a different interviewing angle, so she is interested in finding out what happened to Amanda's pre-makeover fiance, Caleb Collingwood, who disappeared from view after Amanda's makeover. She is also reviewing Amanda's move into the world of fashion designer. Amanda, having read of Lacey's earlier success at finding killers, tells her that a crazed pyscho killer is stalking her and she asks Lacey to solve her murder if she is killed.

Soon Lacey finds herself under a Jinx. Amanda is killed in a drive by shooting, and the car used for the murder was Lacey's beloved Z which was stolen from the garage at work. The news of the murder and car theft alarms Lacey's mom, Rose, and former Cheerleader sister, Cherise "Lethal Feet", and they come from Colorado for a visit. Unfortunately they arrive in town on the same weekend she and boyfriend Vic are supposed to consumate their relationship. To make matters worse, Vic also has a guest, his ex-wife Montana, who has come back to rekindle their marriage.

Lacey tries to work on the murder, all the while worrying about Montana and Vic, and trying to prevent her mom and sister from re-decorating her apartment and helping her with her search for the killer. Lacey's usual friends, Stella, Brooke, Damon, Tony, and Turtle Dove, who was Amanda's bodyguard, all help her to solve the mystery. The killer is captured with some special help from her sister, Cherise "Lethal Feet", and her mom.

This book's introduction of Lacy's family rounded out her character and added more comic relief and interest to the story. As always, the vintage clothing in the trunk and the description of Lacy's outfits, are fun to read as are Lacy's "columns" in the paper. There were a couple of problems with the story which kept me from giving it 5 stars. Vic's character is annoying with his macho attitude and his inablility to fend off his ex wife. The local neighborhood psychic Marie, was mostly missing in this story, since her appearances were limited to phone calls. Since she is a character who adds color and interest to the books, I hope the author brings Marie back in a more prominent role in upcoming books. All in all this was an entertaining read.

1 out of 5 stars I like a good amateur sleuth, but..........2007-04-11

Somehow the `amateur' sleuth bit was a tad overdone and that annoyed me. Sure, in any armchair detective mystery there is the whole `this person just happens to stumble into trouble pretty often' factor, but the stress this novel put on it was grating. Plus, I thought the characters were a little flat and unlikable. It is highly doubtful I will be reading any more of these in the future.

2 out of 5 stars Hostile Makeover: A crime of Fashion Mystery.......2007-02-23

Her books are to easy to put down. Not a top women's sleuth writer by any means. A romance that never happens, how long can you drag it out and keep readers interest. I gave it a fair chance, 3 books (which I had a hard time finishing) and I am definitely done with this writer. She drag things out for ever. Same story just a little different twist each time. Definitely overrated!

5 out of 5 stars Makeovers change lives. . ........2006-07-05

After dodging death from a falling "Hot Donuts Now" Krispy Kreme sign, Lacey finds herself under a Jinx. Thus starts the third book, "Hostile Makeover" in the Crime of Fashion series.

Sent to interview Amanda Manville, who went from Ugly Duckling with a Heart of Gold to a gorgeous, Supermodel with Screaming Diva Tempertantrums after appearing on the Chrysaslis Factor reality make-over show, Lacey is just as interested in finding out what happened to Amanda's pre-makeover fiance, Caleb Collingwood, as she is in reviewing Amanda's move into the world of fashion designer. Amanda has other plans for Lacey, claiming a crazed pyscho killer is stalking her. Having read of Lacey's earlier success at finding killers, Amanda asks Lacey to solve her murder if she is killed.

The jinx results in Lacey's beloved Z being stolen from the garage at work. The news of this auto-theft, brings Lacey's mom, Rose, and former Cheerleader sister, Cherise "Lethal Feet", out from Colorado for a visit. Her family is arriving the weekend she and Vic are supposed to spend out of town consumamting their tenuous relationship. To make matters worse, Vic has an out of town guest too, Montana, his ex-wife. Montana is back to reclaim her man.

Supermodel Amanda is killed in a drive by shooting, and the car used was Lacey's Z. Lacey finds herself trying to cautiously hunt for the killer, more out of anger over the treatment of her Z, than for the deceased supermodel. The list of suspects include: Amanda's sister, Zoe, who designed the fashion line, power couple the Powers who helped back the line, Dr. Spaulding who transformed Amanda into a beauty, and John Tyler Hunter best-friend of Amanda's missing fiance Caleb.

Lacey tries to work on the murder, while fending off her mom and sisters attempts to re-decorate her apartment and assist her with her search for the killer. Their disapproval of her past crime solving quickly changes to interest when they realize she was asked by Amanda the Supermodel to find the killer.

Lacey is surrounded by her usual sidekicks: Stella, Brooke, Damon, Tony, and Turtle Dove-who was Amanda's bodyguard. Turtle Dove has the potential for being another love interest for Lacey, if Vic cannot decide between his ex-wife and her. When Lacey finally figures out who the killer is, he has a very special ending in mind with her in a starring role. The killer is captured with some special help from her sister, Cherise "Lethal Feet" and her mom.

The introduction of her mother and sister added more depth to Lacey's character, and they provided some good comic relief, especially with their obsession with all things marked "Smithsonian". Photographer Hansen's character played a larger role in this book, but local neighborhood psychic Marie's appearances were limited to phone calls. Marie's character was more prominent in the first book, and now she seems to have been put on the back burner. I hope the author brings Marie out more in upcoming books. The final confrontation with the killer was funny. Also Brook and Damon's conspiracy theory about bionic babes with GPS trackers in their breast implants was an amusing touch. All in all another good read.

3 out of 5 stars Ironic fantasy about youth and maturity.......2003-07-09

This is one of Cabell's later books, and a short one at that, running at nearly half the word count of his normal novel. The first half of it is as ironic as his best work in the "Biography of the Life of Manuel," neatly revisiting a number of his main themes such as the concept of the true love that cannot be recaptured (known as "domnei" or woman-worship), that one's actions matter not so much as how one's neighbors view those actions, and honoring one's word. The second half skewers the first--returning the main character to that lost love, making those actions have ramifications (at least to some extent), and showing that one's promises can always contain loopholes.

Cabell's work always has several things going on: although you can read the surface of the novel and enjoy it, if you know what he's satirizing it is much more rewarding. There Were Two Pirates is a mature reflection on growing older and trying to reconcile with the kinds of dreams and goals a person makes when he or she is young. Cabell was writing from personal experience, as one who had seen his star rise and then fall in the short space of 20 years. Like his later books--mainly autobiographical memoirs--this book reflects what Cabell had finally grown to understand: (to be anachronistic) that his fifteen minutes of fame were over. In its place, Cabell returned (not that I'm sure he had ever left it) to what he did best: write for himself.

This is a beautifully composed and illustrated manuscript from an obscure monastery in late Medieval Europe, combining "Medieval style mysticism" with "Renaissance style inquiry" to present a work dedicated to the arcane lore of the unicorn. Selected pages of the manuscript are reproduced (with amazing drawings) and the Latin translated. What I liked most was the layout and atmosphere of the drawings and text which makes a few thousand words and dozen pictures into a great book. A great find!

I loved it. It is a wonderful story, whether it be fiction or not. It is symbolically the story of a seeker of Truth whose messenger is the unicorn. I recommend it to anyone who seriously seeks Universal Truth.

Mr. Green has provided a sumptuous feast of color illustrations of the mystical Unicorn in a wide variety of settings, and with the accompanying original text, transports one's imagination to an enchanted, magical land. Though the editions of this book as of this writing are out of print, it is well worth the effort to locate a copy - I prefer the earlier edition where the illustrations were in their original smaller but more vivid appearance. A lovely book throughout.

Michael Green's 1983 Unicornis is one of those magical books that actually makes you believe.

Presented as a fascimile of an ancient Medieval manuscript, the journal of one Magnalucius, member of a mystical fifteenth century order of philosophers and mystics, the Collegium Gnosticum (College of Knowledge), located near Ravenna, Italy, this book is simply magical.

Green presents it as his translation of the ancient Codex Unicornis, entrusted into his safekeeping by one Frater Iamblicus, a member of the Order. The book consists of the fascimile manuscript pages, done up in very authentic-looking Medieval style, and Green's translation of the Latin text. The illuminations and paintings are spectacular! So cleverly crafted and enchanting is this book that, even though I knew it was fiction, I still kept asking myself, Is it possible this could be for real? I even found myself carefully studying the illuminations and paintings in the book, trying to ascertain whether they were authentically Medieval or not. The book is THAT GOOD.

If you want a truly enchanting book that will make you believe in unicorns you simply MUST locate a copy of this book. Medievalists and lovers of fantasy will delight in this book.

This is a wonderous achievment! De Historia et Veritate Unicornis is a book that really a translated version of a 'book' or just some writing/notes (with drawings) about the Unicorn. I am an avid fantasy reader and this book was a great find! Unfortunately, this is out of print, but if you ever find it, make sure to buy it and enjoy its beauty and let yourself believe!

I have been a believer of Unicorns since 13yrs old (I am now 27), and had no material to assist in my understandings. I first found this book in Adelaide (1989), and found it's information to be not just easy to understand but enjoyable too. The beauty of this book, if you can get a copy, is its magnificent pictures, in full color, and its overall feel. The context of the message is allorgerical fiction, but I have found it blends "heresay" and old lore to produce a book on unicorns that informs and entertains. I have owned and given this book away five times so far, it's that good. The information held within it's pages covers the birth of Unicorns, their habits and life-style, and their exit from our world. I have found the more I read this book, the more I get out of it. Definitely recommended to those who already believe and like the imagery and faith of the Unicorn. GOOD READING:Almtree."2000

It is said that horses with 'whorls' on their forheads are really of unicorn descent. Horses with white spots on each side of their 'withers' are of pegusus descent. I was blessed with a unicorn/pure bred arabian. This book is a MUST for all those that are in search of the truth. Unicorns ARE with us today. Read the evidence within this fabulous transcript. They are one of God's hidden treasures. Only those that BELIEVE will know them. I agree with one of the previous people that have made a review on this transcript. Hunt down a copy, ready it, cherish it and don't lend it to anybody (because you will not get it back)!!!

This is perhaps on of the most compelling books about unicorns ever penned. Each page is filled with colorful illustrations and manuscript reproductions. I was luck enough to recieve this book new on my ninth birthday and to find the sequel while passing through North Carolina. If you enjoy mythology and unicorn lore I strongly advise this book. You will not be able to stop pondering the mystery of the true horn, I also believe the horn lies in the rocky mountains, at the very least I am sure it resides in the new world.

Unicornis is a mind-blowing book, I first read it when I was in the 9th grade, in 1991. I borrowed it from my local Library, and since returning it, I have never been able to find it since. It is a beautifully written book, with luscious illustrations and captures uniquely that delicious sense of majik and mystery. I wrote down the poem from the book, and had memorised it, so for the past nine years I have been able to recite it and hope that I may find this book again someday. Well worth the effort of searching for, trust me on this!

I was somewhat disappointed in this book as I was hoping to get more cooked recipes (especially for Korean Beef) and these are cold/raw recipes. It would have been nice if there was more of a description of the contents.

I do admit it has great pictures and might be a good book--just not what I was looking for. . .

This whole series of books is so well illustrated and written that anyone can follow them. As a culinary student and personal chef I love the fact that there is a picture of what everything is suppose to look like along the way. If you are wanting to cook and try some authentic tasting Korean cuisine this is a great book to start with. Even my Korean friends from church approved at our last dinner together. I am hoping to collect more in the series. The format and food are both excellent!!!

This is a great book that introduce you to Korean cooking. The recepies are easy to follow, even though you are not that used to cook Korean food. The last section with kitchen techniques and traditions in Korea is nice. All in all, I can recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars An Okay Recipe Book.......2007-01-18

The pictures looked a bit outdated and reminded me of a 70's cookbook, there is a lot to be said today for digital pictures . It was also a lot smaller than I thought it would be for the price. Otherwise the recipes looked simple and will probably be helpful for my friend who plans to teach in Korea.

1 out of 5 stars This is Not a Korean Cookbook.......2007-01-11

I cook Korean food regularly but decided to check out some cookbooks for improvement. This book is a joke. Almost every receipe requires MSG (an unhealthy shortcut to authentic cooking). And almost every recipe requires Japanese products like Mirin and sake. Koreans take national pride in their food (developed over 5000 years) and repeated reference to the cooking style and ingredients of its recent past colonizer was rather offensive. The book also mentions dishes most Korean have never heard of; doesn't specify the time for certain steps; and uses ingredients that don't even grow in Korea or don't belong in the dishes. I think the book was geared to Japanese people who want to dabble in Korean cooking -- if you want to cook Korean food the way Koreans cook it, this book is not it.

If you have an Weimaraner puppy or are thinking of buying one, my suggestion is to be sure and read this very helpful guide on Weimaraner Ownership. "The Guide to Owning a Weimaraner", written by Anna Katherine Nicholas, is an absolute MUST-HAVE for anyone who, like myself, is the proud owner of a beautiful Weimaraner.

I bought this book right before I started to research getting my second Wiemaraner pup. I had made a few mistakes with my first one, especially regarding the training aspect of puppy ownership. I love both of my beautiful dogs equally, however the pup that I trained (so easily) after reading this helpful guide made training a dog enjoyable.

This book will start with the very basics and assume you know nothing. I found that to be very helpful since there is always something helpful that you can learn, even long after years of owning a dog. You'll begin with how to select the best possible puppy from a breeder or pet store. She'll discuss everything from training issues at different stages of their development to common veterinary issues associated with Weimaraner's. It's one of those few books in life that seem to have answers to all of our questions. The photograhs are wonderful as well!

I've raised several different breeds of dogs in my life. I've loved each and every dog from every breed in very special ways. HOWEVER, the joy of owning a Weimaraner, as you well know or WILL know, brings with it experiences that you will cherish for the rest of your life.

It's a great read with a fantastic index for finding specific answers to most every question you might have. Whether it's feeding, breeding, training, exercise or grooming-you'll find it all in this handy guide to owning a Weimaraner.

                        Happy Reading to ALL!

This was a very insightful book for my very first weimaraner. It is a basic beginners book that is very easy to understand and follow in all the different aspects from diet, to health, to training, to play. Wonderful. It sure has helped me with mine. I have read this book many times as it is a book you can read in one sitting which makes it even better.

This book is a coffee table photo collection of the art, advertising and paraphernalia of tobacco in the early part of this century. From celebrity endorsements to electrical trick lighters to objects that literally shudder with political incorrectness, this book gives us a visual history of both tobacco and our national culture during the period. The book simultaneously enlightening and beautiful.

I have sewn most of my life and was hoping to pass some sewing knowledge to my daughter. Since I don't claim to be any great expert on all aspects of sewing, I thought she would benefit from a good sewing book. This book does cover many things, more so than some books, but I found some of the explanations too short for a beginner and many of the pictures are hard to see due to fabric and thread color choice. I had to reread some of the instructions more than once to understand what was being explained and I already know something about these things. Since my daughter is old enough to use this book on her own, I feel although it may be a decent reference, it is not the perfect book to learn by. I'll keep looking.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a book that makes it all clear for the novice.......2006-12-21

I credit this book with teaching me not only to sew, but in helping me recognize that I am a visual learner. Previous to finding this jewel I had read other sewing books, many highly recommended, and felt only frustration and confusion by the terminology (even in so-called "beginner" books.) For instance, I read the description/meaning of "selvedge" over and over, but it didn't actually click for me until I had this book. Here a simple glance at a photo told me everything I needed to know to identify WHAT the heck it was so I could get on with the actual sewing. No more wasting hours trying to decipher text on how to position fabric for a particular action, once again clear and large photos clarify the matter. I refer to this book constantly and I find it's well-organized, with a complete index.

If you find yourself stumped or frustrated by other "beginner" books, you may find that you comprehend and learn far faster from a tutorial with lots of photographs (step by step demonstrations) than endless paragraphs of text. I know it works for me and I have several wonderful completed projects now to show for it. I even added some "advanced" touches to my beginner projects thanks to this helpful guide. Kudos to Ms. Colgrove and the publisher for recognizing that visual learners need different tools.

                            Book Description

This important volume contains 170 documents from the Egyptian border fortresses of Elephantine and Syene (Aswan), which yielded hundreds of papyri in hieratic, Demotic, Aramaic, Greek, Latin and Coptic, spanning a period of 3000 years. The documents include letters from legal documents and accounts from family and other archives, and are thus an invaluable source of knowledge of epistolography, law, society, religion, language and onomastica in this unique site and over this long period of time to scholars of varied disciplines. The volume contains five sections, each containing carefully translated and extensively annotated documents of one language group. Excellent cross-referencing allows the user to trace forerunners and successors. Each section is preceded by an introduction, and the book closes with a glossary of technical terms in five languages. Book Description

From 1936 to 1938, the Federal Writers' Project (FWP), a part of the New Deal's Works Progress Administration, hired writers, editors, and researchers to interview as many former slaves as they could find and document their lives during slavery. More than 2,000 former slaves in 17 states were interviewed. With Weren't No Good Times, John F. Blair, Publisher, continues its Real Voices, Real History ™ series with selections from 44 of the 125 interviews now archived in the Library of Congress that were earmarked as interviews with Alabama slaves.

Alabama was a frontier state. From the beginning, its economy was built on cotton and slavery and its laws were fashioned to accommodate both, which becomes obvious when related through the experiences of Alabama's slaves. A year after it obtained statehood, Alabama had a slave population of 41,879, as compared to 85,451 whites and 571 free blacks. By 1860, the slave population had swelled to 435,080, while there were 536,271 whites and 2,690 free blacks. When emancipation came to the slaves, Alabama's slave owners lost an estimated $200 million of capital.

These narratives will help readers understand slavery by hearing the voices of the people who lived it.

Compiled and edited by Horace Randall Williams, Weren't No Good Times is an anthology of 46 of the 125 interviews of former Alabama slaves, conducted from 1936 to 1938, presented with the express purpose of thoroughly documenting and creating a record of life during slavery in the southern state of Alabama. A powerful primary source, presenting individual voices with a loud and clear message of what slavery itself was truly like, Weren't No Good Times has the absolute highest recommendation and is a must for school and community libraries and American History and Black History reference collections and reading lists.
