Book Description

Perhaps it was fitting justice: a dentist who enjoyed inflicting pain was murdered in his own chair. The question is not who wanted Dr. Frederick Nielsen dead, but rather who of the many finally reached the breaking point. The sordid details of this case, with its shocking revelations of violence, cruelty, and horrific sexual abuse, would be tough for any investigator to stomach. But for Seattle Homicide Detective J.P. Beaumont, the most damning piece of the murderous puzzle will shake him to his very core -- because what will be revealed to him is nothing less than the true meaning of unrepentant evil.

4 out of 5 stars "I was stuck between a rock and a hard place".......2007-08-25

In this installment of the J.P. Beaumont series, J.A. Jance gives us a well-crafted mystery, with many layers, and plenty of twists and turns. But she also allows us a further "peek under the tent" of the main character, which increases the enjoyment of these books even more and leaves us seeking the next one in the series.

This time, Beau is summoned to a dentist's office, where the professional that generally makes the patients fear for their "life", has been murdered in a gruesome fashion and left to simmer for a couple of days. Right away, we get several people that have motive for murdering the dentist, and some of them are clearly doctoring their tale. A carpet installer was arguing with the victim before the dentist's demise, and there is a carpeting tool with blood on it. The assistant seems to be hiding something. The victim was separated from his wife, who claimed he beat her, and she was scheduled to meet the victim the day of the murder. And there are many other people that are not bothered in the least by the events.

So J.P. and his official and unofficial partners, Big Al Lindstrom and Peters (helping from the hospital where he is recovering), start their quest to find the killer. In the process, Beaumont has to deal with the ever-annoying Maxwell Cole, who is back with his personal attacks through the newspaper column. Of course, there is also a female that Beau will have to figure out. In the last book his bad streak with women was not reverted, but at least the ending was not as bad as in previous cases. Will this be the time when his luck changes? The information we get on this book regarding the detective's relationship with his ex-wife and her betrayal will allow us to understand better some of the interactions we have seen in the past books.

This book is another ride on a fast and furious roller coaster. I am bruised after reading it, because Jance has pulled the rug from under my feet so many times in this one that I have lost count of the times I was wrong about who did it. I don't mind the bumps though, because the end result is really satisfying. The only thing that I found a little over the top in this book was the way in which the top brass in the police reacted to Beau's decisions throughout the case. I understand the intent of showing the detective as a guy that has no regard for authority, but showing that authority in such an unreal light took a little away from this story. Anyway, the final result is still good enough to leave us satisfied, so do not miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2003-07-29

I really enjoy the Detective Beaumont books and this one was among the best. I recommend it to anyone enjoying detective series.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best of J. P. Beaumont.......2002-12-07

I genuinely enjoyed this book. J.P. Beaumont is one of my favorite detective characters. While he has the usual jaded outlook on life of a lot of fictional detectives, he does transcend the genre and is rather a complex person instead of the stereotypical hardboiled cop. In this book, the victim is distinctly unlikeable and the suspects are almost uniformly sympathetic. It's the rare mystery where you want the reader to know the answer, but not necessarily the police. The reason I marked this one down a bit is because Beaumont seemed a little flatter somehow here and the writing somehow did not draw me in as usual. While one would certainly not expect a "dark night of the soul" in every book, one also should not expect to see him flattening out to become "everydetective" either. If you're a Jance fan, this one is definitely entertaining and worth reading, though. If you're new to her books, I woul suggest starting with the first book in the series - Until Proven Guilty.

4 out of 5 stars Jance is Ready for a Promotion.......2000-09-20

Often, either late in a "mystery author's" career or posthumously, the author is found by the "snobberati" at the NY Times or one of the weekly newsmags. Since these critics would hate to be caught reading mysteries, the author is labelled a "NOVELIST" by the critics and given a big push in the media. It happened to Raymond Chandler, Ross MacDonald, and John D. MacDonald among others. why wait until a deserving author is old or dead? It's time to give early attention to J A Jance. Her work transcends the genre and becomes a tale of characters-characters as well developed as those of a fine Dickens novel. In Improbable Cause, Jance weaves these characters into the story surrounding a dentist who is a spouse abuser. Why he was killed is plain. Who killed him becomes an investigation of sympathetic characters, none of whom you want to see arrested for the crime. When an ex-con is implicated, Beaumont finds himself at odds with his superiors who would rather settle for the obvious and easy suspect. In a rather unique ending, Beaumont solves the case and at investigation's end is covered with elephant manure and commended by the mayor. Although I had the killer figured early on (gut feeling, not clue finding) , the story carried me to the satisfying conclusion.

4 out of 5 stars Solving this murder is like pulling teeth!.......2000-07-22

A dentist is found dead in his own dental chair. There is no shortage of suspects as he was disliked by many people for many different reasons. The trick is to find the real killer. The usual false leads are detailed until Beau solves the case. J.A. Jance is a habit-forming author. When you've read one of her books it makes you want to read the rest. This is not the best of the series, but it's not the worst either.

Book Description

At least 248 American troops didn't make it home for Christmas when the Arrow Air charter flight bringing them home from peacekeeping duties in the Sinai blew up after refueling at Gander, Newfoundland on December 12, 1985 – the worst peacetime military disaster in U.S. history. The Canadian investigators ignored the Islamic Jihad’s claim of terrorist action and suppressed evidence of an in-flight explosion. A slim majority of the investigative board blamed the crash on the crew's inattention to a thin layer of ice on the DC-8's wings. The board disintegrated in controversy after a review by a former supreme court justice roundly rejected the ice theory. Les Filotas, one of the minority who disputed the ice theory, gives a fully-documented insider’s account of the infamous investigation – and of the collapse of a long historical struggle to rid the investigation of aviation accidents of bureaucratic and political entanglements.

5 out of 5 stars Fairness in journalism.......2006-08-21

Les Filotas was a dissenting member of the CASB who would not agree to crucify the pilots of Arrow Air and blame this fatal accident on failure to de-ice. The book is well-researched and presented in an easily understood style. Too bad Mr. Filotas didn't have the political power behind him that those who buried the fusilage at the crash site did.

Brave author, terrific book.

    Book Description

Hospitals are places where lives are saved - but can provide a near-perfect opportunity to destroy life. The arrogant new CEO, managing an insurance plan affiliated with the well-respected Cliffside Medical Center, has transformed a money-losing operation into a medical gold mine in a matter of months. In an attempt to clear herself of charges of incompetence and negligence, Dr. Melissa Morrison uncovers the grisly reason for the health plan's success. Melissa has battled family and old-school discrimination to become a physician. But after only four years in private practice, she is caught up in a struggle for personal and professional survival as the life she built begins to crumble. Her former husband launches a vicious custody battle for their 18-month-old son just as she faces an ugly malpractice lawsuit after a tragic medical incident.

While dealing with the hospital's charges against her, Melissa feels abandoned by her overbearing mother and undermined by her patronizing attorneys. Melissa fights back with grim determination, aided by a handful of supporters: a handsome computer programmer, Ryan MacKenzie; a young attorney, Rebecca Thatcher; and Melissa's mentor, Dr. Roger Hauser. This unusual group blends talents and loyalty as they support Melissa's bid to uncover . . . murder.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding piece of fiction - or is it true??.......2004-05-10

Outstanding writing. Outstanding piece of fiction. OR, is it a true story? This book kept me glued to it until I finished it. Some of the characters reminded me of people that I have actually known and the author had me believing that they were the "real McCoy" from my past. This author will go far if he continues to write works like this one. I highly recommend the book and the author, should he write more in the future. I even recommended this book to my Hadassah group and we are reading it as a "Book of the Month". MAZEL TOV, Dr. Wullfson!

5 out of 5 stars Enron at your hospital.......2004-04-22

Money madness medicine and murder--reads like an Enrorn expose of corruption at the highest inside level, all for the same reason--money. Dr. Wulffson shows keen insight into the inner workings of hospitals, health plans and medical staff politics as well as the human side of trying to be a doctor today.

5 out of 5 stars Murder Where You Least Expect It!.......2004-04-20

Robin Wulffson makes an impressive entrance with publication of his first novel, An Improbable Cause. This mystery/romance moves along at a brisk and entertaining pace as he takes readers behind the scenes in a beach-community hospital, Cliffside Medical Center. The most vulnerable patients there - the frail elderly and premature newborns - are dying under increasingly suspicious circumstances.

The central character, OB/GYN Melissa Morrison, enters the story already facing serious personal and professional dilemmas: Her ambitious, egotistical former husband is demanding custody of their 18-month-old son, and a malpractice lawsuit threatens both her current livelihood and future in the medical profession she battled to enter. Seemingly her only allies are her long-time physician mentor and his wife, Roger and Katrina Hauser, and her office assistant, Jana. A bright young woman lawyer joins the story, supporting Melissa's courtroom battles, and Melissa's personal life takes a happier turn when she begins dating Ryan MacKenzie, a computer programmer at the hospital. But even with these supporters, Melissa is fighting against some heavy odds on several fronts.

Melissa's troubles increase when Katrina Hauser is diagnosed and treated for breast cancer but dies - not of pneumonia, as the hospital records report, but from treatment intended to kill - not cure - the older woman. Suddenly, too many "coincidental" deaths among very elderly patients and premature newborns at Cliffside are adding up, and it seems the basis for these deaths could be greed. Melissa's grief at losing her long-time friend fuels a very personal reason for finding the answers.

Melissa, with the help of her boyfriend Ryan's computer skills, uncovers the truth in altered medical records and payoffs, and it leads to some surprising involvements among the medical staff and administrators connected with the well-regarded local hospital. As Melissa and Ryan uncover the murderous plot and its players, their own lives are threatened, as well.

The author, a physician, gives the readers an intriguing view of behind-the-scenes life in a modern hospital, but this novel encompasses much more than the medical world. Wulffson provides a nice dose of intrigue, balanced with some lighter moments to round out a fast-paced story. This is a fun read for anyone who enjoys an intelligent and engrossing mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Suspense, intrigue and resilient women!.......2003-07-15

I assumed (obviously mistakenly) that the author had to be a woman. I was very surprised to find "Robin Wulffson" was a man - because his devotion to feminine emotions and his creation of such a wonderfully strong heroine was what I loved best about this book. The story is captivating and very timely with what I read in the papers about how HMO's run amok sometimes. This is a must-read for anyone who likes suspense thrillers and anyone who is concerned about what may really be going on with their HMO.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding medical thriller-Robin Cook needs to move over!.......2003-07-13

Outstanding book - highly recommend. The author, Robin Wulffson, is the next Robin Cook! I can hardly wait for his next book to come out in the fall. Hopefully there will be many more books of this quality to follow!

If coffee from a can or jar is your idea of purgatory, The Joy of Coffee is the book for you. Its author, Corby Kummer, originally came to the subject of coffee while writing a series of articles for the Atlantic Monthly, and he found so much to say about the bean that he decided to write a book. Kummer began with some basic questions: "What matters most in buying coffee? How can you sort through the jumble of place names and whimsical labels on beans and blends? Is a dark roast better, more sophisticated, than a light roast? Is it essential to grind coffee beans at home?" What he learned in response to these queries comprises the bulk of The Joy of Coffee.

Starting with a tour of a coffee plantation and ending in the reader's own kitchen, Kummer leads a lively and informative discussion of all phases of coffee production, from harvesting to roasting to brewing. He discusses different roasts and the different types of coffeemakers, and he even talks about caffeine consumption and methods of decaffeination that preserve the bean's flavor. At the end of The Joy of Coffee is a chapter chock full of recipes for tasty treats that either go well with coffee or include it as an ingredient. Like a great cup of Joe, The Joy of Coffee is good to the very end.

                Book Description

In this revised and updated edition of the most authoritative guide to coffee, Corby Kummer travels the country and the world to give you all the latest information you need to make a great cup at home: - The best beans and how to buy and store them - The grinder that's essential for great coffee - Incisive reports on brewing and espresso-making equipment and tips on how to get the best from them, with photographs of current models - A complete, up-to-date list of sources for beans, equipment and Fair Trade organizations

Well, I can honestly say this book has been a God send for me. I knew absolutely nothing about Coffee before this book and drank mostly instant. I got a taste for "real" coffee by frequenting the odd Coffee House with friends. I wanted to know how I could make a delicious drink like those I purchased. Thanks to this book - I now can! This is a very interesting read and takes the reader right through from growing the beans to serving. I have since purchased an Expresso machine and my friends LOVE to have coffee at my house. I am still learning and I have received other tips to improve my brew from other books but I owe my initial success to this book. GREAT for an absolute beginner and I suspect interesting to the more experienced. Thanks Corby! I'm no longer Tea Total :-)

5 out of 5 stars This book lives up to its title........1998-04-07

Like most caffiene addicts I routinely start my day with a cup of coffee. And since the coffee I made at home was never as good as the coffee I could purchase just about anywhere else I would force myself to drive to a nearby coffee shop no matter how inconvenient or expensive this might be.Since I was devoting a great deal of time and money to this quest I decided to purchase Korby Cummer's The Joy of Coffee thinking that the investment would eventually result in a better home brew. Happily, the plan worked.

"Joy" is an incredibly detailed, thorough book which begins with the author traveling to Costa Rica to pick beans and includes descriptions of the various means of roasting, grinding, and and brewing. There is a chapter on Espresso and another chapter examining the health effects of caffeine. The author spends time demystifying coffee terms and compares coffees from around the world. He writes about the advantages and disadvantages of various coffeepots and includes a source guide and a glossary. But the book is not only comprehensive-- the writing is engaging. Mr. Kummer also includes forty tempting recipes. I baked the "marvelous mocha cupcakes" which the author says are "wonderful"-- sorry, but I didn't think they were better than "very good"-- in fairness the comments "scrumptious" and "amazing" were elicited by two of my friends who generously agreed to sample them. They lasted one night. I also baked his "unbeatable biscotti". They were excellent-- very crispy and light-- they lasted two nights. Naturally, I drink them with coffee I brewed from my new pot-- at home.

An excellent companion piece is "Glass Paper Beans" which eloquently describes something we would normally take for granted each day, in this case lingering over a cup of coffee at the local cafe. The author, Leah Hager Cohen, describes what is really involved when we sip our brew while browsing the local paper. She introduces us to the the family who picks the beans, the man who cuts the trees to provide the wood pulp for the newspaper and a woman who works at the glass factory and helps to make the glass that holds the coffee. After reading Ms. Cohen you will never take your daily cup for granted and Mr. Kummer will tell you how to fix that cup in your own home.

                              Book Description

A remarkable teenager who went from public assistance to a million dollar net worth shares his story and offers 9 key principles to success. Farrah Gray is no ordinary teenager. He wears a suit and tie; he has an office on Wall Street and another one in Los Angeles . . . and he sold his first business at the age of 14 for more than a million dollars. He invested that money in a partnership with Inner City Broadcasting, one of the most prominent African-American owned businesses in the country, and now is heading the relaunch of their signature magazine, InnerCity. According to People magazine, Farrah is the only African-American teenager to rise from public assistance to a business mogul without being in entertainment or having a family connection. Reallionaire tells Farrah's extraordinary and touching story. When he was just six, Farrah's mother became seriously ill, prompting his decision to provide for this family, and he spent the first $50 he ever made taking them for a real sit-down dinner. At the age of eight, he founded his first business club. By fourteen, with a million dollars in his pocket, Farrah was well on his way to business success. Each stage of Farrah's progress is marked by one of the principles of success he learned along the way, creating not just an extraordinary story but also a step-by-step primer for others to create success in their own lives with honor; charity and compassion. In the tradition of great motivators and leaders, this is both an instructional book and a story to inspire others to live life to the fullest. And readers don't have to be interested in business to enjoy it. In fact, Farrah is a role model for everyone.

Say this kid speak at a Conference. He is a nice guy and appears to be pretty well grounded.
However, this book stinks. I bought it thinking I could share it with the youth group I'm involved with. Thought it may be interesting. The book is a major bore. A Sleepeer. Picked it up several time thinking it would get better and more interesting, but no substance ever evolved in the chapters. Do not waste your energy or time on this book!

OK, I'm not tryin' to hate but it seems that if you are not a cute, very ambitious 8-year old who happens upon a mentor with the desire and the resources to help you out, then this book is just a heart-warming, rags-to-riches story, period. This is more of a "how it happened to me" than a "how to" book. I am pleased to see what can happen when intense, focused desire is aimed in a positive direction...and glad that he is reaching back to help others.

                              5 out of 5 stars Reallionaire.......2007-05-12

I purchased this book for my son after seeing Farrah on TV a while back. He was very impressive during the interview. I bought the book in hopes that my son who was 11 at the time would actually read it. To my surprise, he blew threw it and told me that it was his favorite book. With that endorsement, I would recommend other young men to read the book as well. Good food for the soul.

I was truly inspired by this young man. I was intrigued, as my youngest son displays a lot of these attributes and has been telling me since age 5 or 6 that he's going to be rich. After reading this young mans story I just had to pass it along to my son, just to remind him that his goals and dreams are reachable, that no idea is a bad idea. Thank you Farrah for bringing the message home.

The tagline to this book is "The essential lessons that took me from public assistance to a millionaire"... and wait for it "by the age of 14". This book was smooth and easy to read - I didn't find I took away that many specific lessons, more just a feeling for a beautiful heart warming story that left me touched and inspired to know that whatever situations people are born into or find themselves into - anything is possible.
