Book Description
Jar City introduces American readers to a new crime writer from Iceland whose work has created an international sensation. Arnaldur Indridason has been compared to such luminaries in the field as Henning Mankell, Georges Simenon, Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall; everyone agrees that here is a world-class writer.
When a lonely old man is found murdered in his Reykjavík flat, the only clues are a cryptic note left by the killer and a photograph of a young girl’s grave. Inspector Erlendur, who heads the investigation team, discovers that many years ago the victim was accused, though not convicted, of an unsolved crime. Did the old man’s past come back to haunt him?
As the team of detectives reopen this very cold case, Inspector Erlendur uncovers secrets that are much larger than the murder of one old man--secrets that have been carefully guarded by many people for many years. As he follows a fascinating trail of unusual forensic evidence, Erlendur also confronts stubborn personal conflicts that reveal his own depth and complexity of character. Like all great crime fiction, Jar City is about much more than murder, and avid suspense fans are about to discover a first-rate writer who has already received rave reviews around the world.

Chilling Events.......2007-09-10
I found this mystery good to read on a hot day - it chills you to the bone. The author does a good job of depicting the gloom and bleakness of fall rainy days in Iceland. Curiously, as I read the story, I pictured all the scenes in black, white and grey -like the cover.
Equally bleak is the relationship Erlendur hammers out with his daughter, Eva Lind. I was happy to sense a spark of warmth at the end of the book, with the possible naming of Eva Lind's baby. I liked the realism of their struggles to understand each other, painful as it was.
The genetics data bank information was fascinating - wish there had been even more on this device for moving the plot.
Some scenes of the women expressing emotions - when talking about how the crimes affected them - fell short somehow. But those would be powerful feelings, difficult to portray.
I look forward to reading more of Indridason's books.
Quick read.......2007-08-28
This was a typical mystery. I was hoping for more details of Iceland. I felt very little sympathy for the characters due to the style of writing. It was more like reading a story in the newpaper.
An engrossing read.......2007-08-13
Jar City is a complex mystery that is difficult to put down. Detective Erlendur finds himself investigating both a recent murder and the mostly forgotten atrocities commited by the victim himself, many years before. The mystery itself is fascinating, but equally engrossing are the glimpses into Erlendur's family life and the bleak Reykjavik setting. Erlendur, who seems to very much like the status quo, finds himself butting heads with the modern world as he tries to unravel a mystery that began long ago but has far-reaching consequences. A satisfying read all around, I can't wait to read more by Indridason!
Great, twisty, well-structured tale.......2007-06-28
I don't know a thing about Iceland and I don't even know if this is an accurate police procedural for that part of the world but it feels spot on. And I wouldn't have given this a second look if I hadn't already become deeply entrenched in the superb writing of the Swede, Henning Mankell. When a reviewer (may have been the NY Times but frankly can't remember) drew the comparison, I said OK. And I'm glad I did. To read a translated work requires some patience because the language is structured more for accuracy than lyricism and the rhythms are somewhat different than those of a native English writer. No matter. The story soon takes over and the simple declarative sentences create a certain beauty. Also, this book is rich in dialogue and really perks along through the characters themselves. The story, which involves a murder that is associated with a decades-old rape (or maybe rapes?) is deftly interwoven with the brutal emotional relationship between the inspector, Erlunder, and his daughter. I flinched at some of their interchanges but they never seemed contrived or unnecessary. I'm sure it is possible to have an inspector whose personal life isn't a wreck (Ruth Rendell's Wexford comes to mind) but the copper with feet of clay can provide a useful distraction when the author is building a complex story. This is a good one with fairly original bloodlines (no pun) and a good grasp of the thorny issues of rape prosecution. I heartily recommend it.
P.S. You aren't going to believe what a jar city turns out to be!
My 2 cents.......2007-05-22
This is a well written book on police investigation. Though the book has been translated from icelandic, the narration style is simplistic enough to keep the plot engrossing. What starts a investigation into a murder with no clues soon turns the issue wide open and many skeletons start tumbling out. I liked the way the author builds the case step by step by going back on the life of the victim. He has managed to infuse some wit into the phlegmatic protoganist inspector Erlendur too. I think I'm going to read other works of Arnaldur. You will love this book....

Best of the Series.......2006-11-03
Of all four books in this time traveling series of Chole and Cheftu, this was my personal favorite. I found the story to be a fascinating glimpse into the ancient world with its rituals and customs. Some of the rituals however were a bit too graphic and un-necessary but I don't want to spoil anything by saying too much. Although you don't have to read Reflections in the Nile first, I would suggest that you do only to get a better understanding of the characters and their motivations.
Pre-History of the World's Favorite Mystery Island.......2006-06-20
Frank develops a story around the history and legends of Atlantis. She ties together various threads of pre-history and early history, including Egypt, pre-classical Greek civilization and proto-Hebrew culture.
She sets the book in the time of the Great Famine, when the biblical story places Joseph the son of Jacob in Egypt as the Prime Minister. She reckons the pharaoh of that period as Senwosret III, the last king before the Hyksos dynasty established by invaders from the East. Frank weaves a story of cultural and language history that is exciting and stimulating, as well as vivid in bringing out the strange, erotic, profligate and idolatrous character of the early Hellenic peoples.
Her motif is the real society from which the later Olympian myths of the Greek gods developed. This is a fascinating aspect of the story as she portrays how the pagan, superstitious culture of a real, understandable people trying to deal with a precarous natural setting became legendary due to the destruction of their culture by a cataclysmic earthquake and volcanic explosion that destroyed the whole character of the Aegean.
She provides great detail of the technology and social structure to account for the information in Plato's account form ancient times, supplemented by later Roman writers. She provides insights into the character of the ancient Mediterranean world, and its links with the Semitic cultures.
One novel aspect she includes in her tale is the inclusion of Egypt as a vassal of the Empire of Aztlan, which ruled the northern Mediterranean areas associated with Greek culture. Other writers reckon Joseph and the story of the migration of Jacob's family into Egypt occurred in during the Hyksos dynasty, and present evidence that this was facilitated by the Hyksos being Semitic.
She places Atlantis [Aztlan] in the Aegean as the isle known today as Santorini. It appears she is following an earlier very popular view among scholars. A related book, by an archaeological historian, Andrew Collins, purposes an alternative that Atlantis was indeed, as earlier thought, a western island continent on the American side of the Atlantic.
Oh, and for added excitement, in this book she accounts for the ancient tales of Vampirism (porphyria) shared by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, as well as forms of spongiform encephalitis, a true epidemic of the time.
A seredipitous bit of information about this book is that the author is from Dallas, Texas, the area where I stay and call home when I am not in Africa.
Review.......2005-08-02
It is interesting that Laurel Bliss (New Haven, CT), from the Library Journal (the arm of the Left in Schools and Colleges in the US), should dismiss Frank's book and suggest instead, the books from the lesbian writer Diana Gabaldon... She was not able to explain what she sees as a lack of "more believable settings, suspenseful plots, and plausible, likable characters" in Frank's work. Perhaps, because Library Journal writers in general have a certain distaste to... heterosexual couples? Just check what they say about books that praise homosexuality and are advised to children. I do not take their advise when buying a book in Amazon, but prefer to read regular people, like me, who read the book and express their thoughts!
A Wonderful book reminisent of the Earth's Children Series.......2002-09-07
I first came across this book while I was in my public library one day. I was searching for a good book to read while at the beach. The cover immediatly grabbed my attention and after reading the inside flap, I knew I had to read it. The imagery that was mixed into the stroy was incredible. I became intrigued by the theory which Frank offers as to the mysterious demise of the lost Empire of Atlantis. The detail in the story was exquisite and beautiful and I found myself wanting to be there with Chloe and Cheftu! I reminded me of Jean M. Auel's Earth's Childrens Series and was just as satisfying. I would recomend it to anyone, anywhere, anytime!!!
Fresh Ideas and a New Adventure.......2001-01-27
Suzanne Frank could very well have rested on her laurels after writing the phenomenal tale of the Exodus from Egypt in Reflections in the Nile. Instead, the second book in her trilogy presents a fresh world with just as much wonder and history-questioning theories.
Journey back to Ancient Atlantis, the doomed society of hedonism and scientific advancements. Cheftu and Chloe are forced to take on new struggles as they are faced with a civilization on the brink of collapse. What is their purpose? And will their love survive the temptations of the sensual lifestyle around them?
A wonderful read..a perfect excuse to call in sick, stay home and read.

Book Description
Over the western part of the United States fell the dark, terrible cloud of the most incredible invasion in history. Before this inhuman, scientific attack of Asia's barbaric army, Americans died agonizingly in a deliberately released leprosy plague! As one great western city after another was wiped out, and the invading army's ranks were overwhelmingly swelled by drugged American recruits, Operator 5 and his fighting patriots were slowly beaten back. Then came the showdown -- when a handful af gallant sons of Liberty for the last time challenged a Yellow despot in order that America might still go free!

Lest any reader should wonder where our heroine found materials for all the mending and repairing referred to, we may remark that the Indians in the wilderness were, and still are, supplied with needles, beads, cloth, powder and shot, guns, axes, and etc., by the adventurous fur-traders, who penetrate deep and far into the wilderness of North America; and when Nelly and Roy ran away from their captors they took care to carry with them an ample supply of such things as they might require in their flight.

Customer Reviews:
Another great Southern Living cookbook!.......2007-06-07
This is a unique cookbook from Southern Living. My favorite part of the cookbook is the first 27 pages - a section titled Taste of the South - which is pure gold! Here are delicious, foolproof recipes for classic southern dishes, such as fried catfish, hush puppies, corn pudding, buttermilk cornbread, hotwater cornbread, blackeyed peas, fried chicken, peach cobbler, creamy grits, fried green tomatoes, okra and tomatoes, turnip greens, pecan pie, pecan bars, sweet potato biscuits, and more. Other southern favorites are scattered throughout the book (Never Fail Chicken and Dumplings, Peach Ice Cream, Watermelon Rind Pickles, Banana Pudding, Etouffee, Crab Cakes, Deviled Crab, Seafood Gumbo, Peach Butter, etc.) and I want to try them all!
For the most part, ingredient lists are short and directions are simple and easy to follow.
This is a big book, with many interesting recipes (not all of them traditional). Right now, I'm concentrating on the "southern basics" from the book, and we are loving the food!
10 STARS FOR THIS BOOK!!!.......2006-08-24
I have a great many cookbooks & this is what I've been searching for. I only received it this afternoon & I can't put it down! This is a book with what I call "normal" ingredients, that you don't have to substitute or forget about trying because you don't have or can't find the ingredients. I also bought the Slow Cooker Recipe & it looks like it will be close to my fingertips as well. I'm now looking to buy the Ultimate Cookbook as well as the Ultimate II. I can't wait to try these terrific books. Right now I'm recooping from complications from a broken leg & it's almost unbearable that I can't make it to the kitchen to do what I want to do. But when I do, I will be in heaven with these 3 books. IF YOU WANT GOOD DOWN-TO-EARTH RECIPES, ESPECIALLY SOUTHERN DISHES, YOU'VE GOT TO GET THIS BOOK!!!!
Best cook book ever!!.......2006-08-11
I have had this excellent cookbook for around 2 years. I have yet to make a recipe out of the book that wasn't good. All of the recipes are wonderful, I have personally made 2/3 of the recipes in the cookbook. These recipes are excellent and a request of my family and friends when it is my turn to cook.
Simply the BEST!!!.......2005-10-24
My first encounter with this cookbook was an ad SL sent my way advertising the new cookbook. BECAUSE of the picture on the cover, the delicious looking chocolate cake, I ordered one. This was a birthday present for my neice, who loves to cook. She made the cake for her hubby's birthday. It is as delicious as it looks. I called SL to order another book for my daughter in New Orleans. They were on back order. They had already sold out, because of the picture on the cover. I finally got the second book. My daughter got to enjoy it a couple of years before Katrina took it away. I've found it again for her and now one for me too! It really is the prettiest cover I've seen on a cookbook. I liked what the other fans wrote, minus one. I can ditto it all, minus one.
clear instructions and delicious recipes.......2005-08-30
I have done several of the recipes in the short month I have had the book and find the recipes easy to follow. In addition, I get rave reviews of my cooking form everyone when I make one of these. The picture of the cover cake should speak for itself. This is a keeper!
I am not one for following recipes very well, but this book has some amazingly short and simple instructions and I find that I can follow them to a tee.
Many of my childhood favorites are here and some fresh creative versions are included as well. This is a must for anyone who loves Southern cooking or food in general!

HORRIBLE WASTE.......2007-04-20
Well, if you looking for a book on Chihuahua's, this is certainly NOT the book for you. Like a previous reviewer states, the book doesn't contain any useful information at all. It is all fluff. Anyone that knows how to search the Internet will find the same info. I would not waste your money on this useless book.
No good!.......2006-10-12
This book is nothing more than the published glorification of the Chihuahua breed. Not in-depth at all and has absolutely no value to someone who wants to take SERIOUS care of the animal. Might as well title it "The Essential Dog". Very general look at caring for dogs - as a whole! "Essentially" an unnecessary purchase.
The Essentia Chihuahua.......2000-06-15
The book looks like a great book im defanitly ordering it right away i love chihuahua's and this looks like a extremly good book on them.
Book Description
A radio/television sports announcer who moved to Baltimore in what turned out to be the final decade of the Baltimore Colts, Ted Patterson has amassed one of the world's premier collections of Baltimore sports memorabilia. In this short history of football in Baltimore, he takes us on a tour of his remarkable collection--not only to highlight memorable games and players but also to explore the pop culture that surrounded and has survived them.
Patterson introduces us to the teams and early stars of Johns Hopkins and Morgan State; Army-Navy games in old Municipal Stadium; high-school rivalries like City-Poly, Loyola-Calvert Hall, Gilman-McDonogh, and the great years of Patterson High; the original Colts (colors silver and green); and, at considerable length, the legendary Baltimore Colts of Johnny Unitas, Lenny Moore, Raymond Berry, Alan "the Horse" Ameche, Artie Donovan, and Lydell Mitchell. He also includes the lastest chapters in this eventful story: the fight to bring pro football back to the city, the dawn of the Ravens' era, and the building of a new football stadium in downtown Baltimore.
Football in Baltimore offers an engaging, wonderfully illustrated history of Baltimore's love affair with the game--a running essay on the large subject of football in Baltimore's past along with the varied and highly colorful material objects that the game generated for the sake of the fans and that fans generated for the fun of it. Here are game programs, autographed pictures, press guides, bubblegum cards, comic strips, advertising ephemera, and miscellaneous collectibles from championship banners to the special-issue sets of china that Carroll Rosenbloom once gave to the Colts and their wives as Christmas gifts.
This altogether new take on the game and the storied Colts will appeal to every lover of the college and pro game--and may even inspire popular support for a Colts museum to match the Babe Ruth House and Museum. Patterson's engaging writing style keeps the pages turning. Dozens of color and black-and-white photographs from Patterson's collection will captivate Colts fans, football lovers, local history buffs, and sports memorabilia collectors.

Baltimore Colts Football.......2004-11-09
Very well written and informative book of one of footballs' greatest teams. The Colts were a Baltimore icon, and this book is wonderfully descriptive in regard to how the club formed, the winning tradition, and the fateful day they left a heartbroken town. A must read for any Baltimore Colts fan! Also contains great pictures of memorabilia.
Great for the Baltimore Native.......2001-12-24
My Dad grew up in Baltimore and played football for Loyola High and Johns Hopkins University. We gave him this book for Christmas last year and he loved it - a wonderful gift for bringing back memories.

Book Description
Decorative and versatile, screens hide untidy or ugly areas, provide privacy, and act as portable room dividers. And, they're yours to create in many different looks, textures, and styles: woven with bright ribbon; inlaid with French country gingham; appliquéd with flowers; or given a sumptuous leather effect. All you need to know are the basics of making a simple frame screen or the solid panel version--templates are provided, but you can buy pre-made blanks--and easy ornamental techniques. A shell-covered driftwood screen emulates the wonderful weathered quality of beach material; the richly embellished music score screen has gold leaf, script, and flowing curves; and others use papier-mâché, verdigris, mosaics, faux marbling, and upholstering. These unusual pieces will complement any interior.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth the money.......2003-07-13
I can't say enough good things about this book. Howes, the author, has written an easy to understand and easy to follow book that includes all types of decorative screens.
First, Howes describes the basic instructions for each type of screen. Howes shows how to create frame screens and solid panel screens. Then, she gives instructions and materials for particular projects, as well as how long it should typically take to finish each project. Howes includes various design styles for each type of screen. Plus, you can easily make your own projects using the author's basic instructions. She also includes patterns you can blow up to create the unique shape of each screen.
Some sample projects are a country style frame screen made with gingham and chicken wire, an upholstered solid panel screen, a music score solid panel screen, which has the shape of an old music stand and is painted and decoupaged.
I have been looking for a while for a book like this one on making decorative screens. Let me save you the trouble. Buy this book!

Book Description
Pracitcally everyone recognizes the Campbell's Tomato Soup Can images by Andy Warhol that have come to define American Pop Art. Less well known, but equally intriguing, is another part of Warhol's Campbell's oeuvre: the Campbell's soup boxes, which he made during the mid-1980s using paint, silkscreen, and drawing to render these boxes in his inimitable style. Warhol, whose fascination with advertising and consumerism was born of his early career as a commercial artist, took as his inspiration the endlessly replicated images of modern branding, and thus helped to create and define the major art movement of recent decades. This volume, with an essay tracing Warhol's history with Campbell's, reproduces more than 60 of Warhol's Campbell's Soup Box pieces, and as such, adds to the growing documentation of this towering presence in 20th-century art.
