Less Mystery Than Humor.......2007-01-27
Ruth Rendell and P.D. James write murder mysteries that are dead serious. M.C. Beaton (real name Marion Chesney) writes mysteries that are tinged with humor. Elaine Viets writes humor with a touch of mystery
added. At least this is so with her "dead-end job" series two of which I have read so far. Viets lived and
worked in St. Louis, Missouri before moving to Florida. So did her sleuth in this series, Helen Hawthorne. Helen is educated and had a high paying job in St. Louis; but she is now on the lam in Florida avoiding 'justice' back at home for reasons the reader will sympathize with. She takes dead-end, 'off the books' jobs in order to keep a low profile. In Just Murdered she works at a bridal salon where she meets a certain 'Kiki' Shenrad who is mother of a bride. Kiki is also the soon-to-be murder victim. We know early on about the moral character of Kiki. On pg. 2 readers learn that she wears no panties. On pg. 5 we learn that her pubic hair is shaped into a dollar sign.
Helen Hawthorne feels that she must solve the murder mystery in order to avoid being herself a prime
suspect. This she does after various twists and turns in the story.
Having lived in St. Louis and Florida myself I can say that Viets accurately if humorously describes some of
the mores of citizens of both places. Speaking of St. Louis, when we both lived there I always enjoyed
reading her columns in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, before she took up murder mystery writing.
Because reviews are subjective I shall set out my pre-existing biases. I prefer the works of Georges Simenon,
Colin Dexter, and the aforementioned P.D. James and Ruth Rendell. Were I rating Viets' work as pure
mystery writing I would give Just Murdered a 2 or thereabouts. Were I rating it as pure humor and for excellence of style I would give it a 5. Comparing Viets' work with my preferred mystery authors' work product is admittedly like comparing apples to oranges; but this explanation is the best I can give for my rating of 3 stars. It might help to say that I have already bought more of her books and expect to enjoy
reading them for the humor they contain.

These lite-mystery series books are a delightful change of pace from the usual books I read. This book moved along swiftly with just the right balance of intrigue and humor. I really enjoyed this story, felt sorry for Desiree, and did not figure out the crime until the solution was revealed!

Many years ago I enjoyed Elaine Viets' columns in the local St. Louis newspaper and I was delighted to find her talents had expanded into fun mystery fiction. The "dead-end jobs" series is funny and engaging and always good for a quick read. This, the 4th in the series i think, has really developed. The characters are more real and believable and because of that I care more about them. I'm looking forward to the next!
Whose Wedding Is This?.......2005-07-01
Helen Hawthorne's new job is at Millicent's Bridal Salon. Somehow Helen thought a Bridal Salon would be a nice place to work. Happy brides wanting to make their special day perfect.
That was before she met a running stream of Bridezilla's and their mothers. The worse is Desiree Shenrad, a true mouse and her tyrannical, rich and obnoxious mother Kiki, who not only makes all the decisions on the wedding, but seems to have even picked out the groom.
It doesn't seem that big of a loss when Kiki winds up dead, stuffed in a closet at the wedding. Except that Helen's fingerprints seem to be all over the place and the police are giving her a second look.
To prevent them from finding out who she is, Helen decides to investigate and discover who really wanted this mother-of-the-bride dead. Her ex-husband, her daughter, the prospective son-in-law, an actor that she wouldn't let take a part because it was degrading? What about Millicent, the bridal shop owner who had threatened her, or the chauffeur who thought she was leaving him a lot of money in her will, but was actually getting ready to dump him.
With this list of suspects, Helen hoped it wouldn't take too long to find the killer, or the police may just uncover her hidden identity first.
Highlights:
The mystery was pretty good, a lot of suspects and Helen does actually investigate and finds clues which lead her to the killer.
The romance of Margery - Helen's landlady and new resident Warren who teaches dancing.
We didn't have to read the long drawn out version of why Helen's hiding.
Lowlights.
This series has been improving since the first book which I disliked, but this one is a set-back.
The mystery was ok, but not only is Kiki such a horrible person that you don't care that she gets killed, you also don't care about anyone else. I hated them all.
Phil - formerly Phil the pothead whose true identity came out in the last book and is now Helen's new boyfriend. I think Phil was a better character when he was unseen and only talked about.
Why do so many people in these books always have to be ridiculously polite, Phil letting his ex-wife, who is trying to get him back move in with him while she's in town, even though he knows it upsets Helen and he can hear her crying about it. "She doesn't have anywhere to stay, so I have to let her stay here." In real life you'd tell her to get a hotel and maybe, just maybe pay for a few nights there if she's pleading poverty.
I'm hoping that the next book will be better.
Silly.......2005-06-08
I usually enjoy this series a lot, but this installment just didn't do it for me.
Helen just took up with Phil in the last book, and already they're declaring their undying love for each other. Not once, but twice, Helen jumps to the wrong conclusion about Phil and his ex-wife and comes off as near-suicidal. It was just way too much too soon after the start of the romance.
I also thought the plot was weak. Mother of the bride deaths are being done way too much lately. The characters come across as one-dimensional and unlikeable. Add that to a thin plot and this just wasn't as enjoyable as other installments of the series.

what is there to say. Flo's recipes simply work. i have always lamented that cookbook authors do not recommend that first all important recipe that you attempt when first using their book. and, for that
matter, numbers two and three, also. if the first thing i attempt is not successful i am pretty much finished with the book. but, if the first one was a 'go' then i am more lenient in rating the entire volume. one very, VERY important thing in any baking book is instruction on how the flour in the book's recipes was measured. there are several different methods but if you don't know EXACTLY how the author measured her flour the chances of success are slim. Flo, and before her, Maida Heatter, are two of the very few who give this information. YEA, FLO !
Four recipes all failed.......2006-06-27
I am getting rid of this book. I followed the recipes exactly but got very poor results. The eclair batter was too thin--the eclairs were flat and impossible to fill. The pastry cream recipe should be called "pastry sauce"--also thin, never set up. The almond paste pound cake recipe fell. The white cake recipe had a very nice texture but shrinks a great deal as it cools. Overall I was very disappointed with this book. It gave me the worst results of any cookbook I have tried in recent memory.
Cake Bible.......2006-05-14
This is a wonderful book for experienced and inexperienced cake bakers alike! I learn something new from each recipe I try. I especially love her conceptual approach to baking, by explaining the whys and hows of why we would use a scale versus a measuring cup or why you may want to brush your cakes with a flavored syrup, she really opens your eyes to concepts that I've blown off in the past simply because no one had taken the time to explain why this works over that. It's just so insightful and such a good read that I find myself using this book like a reference book, so it's my new Cake Bible.

I love reading books on baking. Just when I think I know it all I'm always learning more. This book is no exception. Great, easy to follow recipes for the baker ready to move onto the next level. Buy this book!

This is an absolutely wonderful cookbook. Not only are the recipees delightful, but it contains detailed instructions, and carries you through enough basic techniques and undestanding of ingredients that will help you beyond this book. The recipes range from simple to complex. She also includes recipees for various sauces, syrups, icings, purrees, etc etc that can be mixed and matched to create different cakes with different presentations. This book, however, is primarily about cakes. While it does have a small section on pies and tarts, it is not extensive in that area. If you are looking for an all-encompasing baking book, this may not be the book to purchase. However, if you like cakes, (like me!), this is a great book to read and to work through.

If you are looking to build an outdoors oven, you must read this book. Even if your goal is not an earth oven. Besides detailed information about the techniques to build an earth oven, Kiko describes very clearly the process of baking with wood and goes thru all the alternatives. His insight in using different types of materials is very valuable and his opinions are explained thoroughly.
The book is also very well written and engages you from the beginning.

I found this title on a recommended list for cob building, and since I love to bake bread, an outdoor oven seems like the next logical step to take. This turns out to be an inspiring book, filled with pictures and instructions and enthusiasm. My only complaint is the limited recipe, especially since I am not fond of sourdough. I am now ready to make an oven though, and try my own recipes.

Kiko's new book presents a more in depth discussion than the previous edition, of clay ovens one could build in their backyard, from their backyard. i just had to write after reviewing the last review. This book is good - there are many,many large pics with dolls CLEARLY visible. full page pics & 4"x3", 3"x2", 5"x4" pics & on & on. On top of that there are catolog pics with many dolls. This is the nature of books on collectible books. Authurs don't wait till every last rare & unfound item is located & photographed before they add to the pool of info by publishing! we wouldn't get anywhere with history, collecting etc. if we did that. Just to let you know I am selling my edition on this site.

This book consists of mostly catalogue numbers. I bought it with the intention of identifying my childhood doll. Guess what, she wasn't listed. I didn't even see a doll with a similar face pictured. It may have been there, but the pictures are in black and white and are quite small, so it's possible I just couldn't recognize her. The listings are extensive, but certainly not complete.

Making a wonderful something from nothing.......2004-09-29
Binky is a native Texan living in Austin where, as of the book's publication, owns a shop called "Flashbacks." The book "celebrates the marriage of 3 great passions -- jewelry, shopping and making something yourself." As a frequent visitor to the Randolph Air Force Base's thrift shop myself, I can attest to the therapy provided by finding a true treasure at a pittance.
The montage on page 14 is an appropriate introduction to how to combine unlikely objects to enhance a corner of your home. The montage incorporates a religious picture, jeweled ornaments, and a hanging candleholder which, in a former life, was a coffee urn lid. Binky provides tips on how to bargain at estate and garage sales, such as paying in cash or using inclement weather to find a desperate seller.
Binky has a super idea for using those one or two beads you have leftover from other projects -- wire them together for a beaded curtain. She suggests that you look around for inspiration. On a recent shopping trip, I saw some very expensive beaded and embellished pillows. With some exotic fabric scraps, beads, and old brooches gathered from a rummage sale, you could quickly and easily make a similar project without spending much money.
She includes a gallery of the work of others who use found objects. Jo Packham and Chapelle Designers make holiday ornaments. Mary Jo Hiney's work has a distinctly Victorian influence. If you are a pack-rat, collecting bottle caps or used gift-wrap, this book will give you inspiration for their use.

Agosin creates yet another beautiful piece of literature in "Always from Somewhere Else." Her emotional and thought-provoking style provides the reader with an incredible inside view of Jewish life in Chile. A duet of pain and beauty, Agosin's memoir of her father's life is vivid and alive. This story, one of lost and newfound identity has the strong possibility of being close to us all. This book is a definite candidate for everyone's personal library of favorites.
