Something is rotten in the state of Krondor: the Mockers, the gang of goons and bullyboys that were James's colleagues back when he was known as Jimmy the Hand, have been decimated in vicious fighting on the rooftops and in the sewers. That, and a seemingly random slew of murders, tips off the Crown that some outside concern is attempting an underworld power-grab right under the Prince's nose. Raymond E. Feist's second Riftwar book, Krondor the Assassins, continues the action of Krondor the Betrayal with Prince Arutha and Squire James back in the Midkemian capital, returning triumphantly from their campaign against the Tsurani magician Makala and moredhel headman Delekhan. But Arutha quickly sends James, née Jimmy, back into the city's seedy underbelly to investigate, and in the process he forms a sort of Krondorian secret service. Could the assassins of the Nighthawks be responsible, or perhaps some Keshian interest? James, naturally, begins to suss the situation out, which becomes even more complicated when a hunting party including the visiting Crown Prince of Olasko is beset by shape-shifting magicians.

James and Arutha, both classic feel-good-fantasy heroes--the type of guys with a twinkle in their eye who seem virtually indestructible--eventually track their enemies down to a deserted Keshian fortress, facing assorted assassins, demons, and evil priests in the process. Not the most imaginative or compelling fantasy around, but The Assassins is still a fun romp for fans of the Krondor band. --Paul Hughes

Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Raymond E. Feist returns us now to a place of unparalleled wonders--a sprawling kingdom coveted by enemies on all sides; a bustling center of commerce and magic, vibrantly alive and eternally in conflict. This is Midkemia, where great heroes are bred, and its glorious center...

Krondor

Prince Arutha--newly returned from battle--is concerned about a rash of unexplained assassinations that plagues his capital city. And so he commissions his most trusted agent, Squire James--formerly the thief known as "Jimmy the Hand"--to discover the source of the deadly epidemic. The answers seem to lie far beneath the streets in the dank depths of Krondor, where a terrible war rages in secret between two rival criminal gangs: those who call themselves "Mockers" and others in the thrall of a mysterious being known as "The Crawler." But the deeper the Squire delves, the closer he gets to the true nature of the horror that has left untold dead in its wake. And unless James can prevent one last, unthinkable slaying, the nightmare forces of corruption and deceit will destroy his liege and reduce his beloved Krondor to ruins.

5 out of 5 stars Krondor the Assassins.......2005-06-12

Back to basic. Book number two has a a drmatic turn around frm book one. The charcter are realer and the seceray is real too. We stilll dont kno much about the man they call the Crawler cept he trying to run off the Gulid of Thevies: Mockers. Susspose the leader of the mockers is dead and leave that to nmuch question. Whle there that business a Duke stop by or well was passing by and wants to hunt. Well william(Pug son) is asked to take the Duke out for some hunting. As they are out there they get attcked with no warning. Almost seem that someone wants both the Duke killed and the Mockers gone too. Choas is runniing through Krondor and nothing can be done.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than Book 1.......2005-04-02

More of those classic characters and rich geography that I was missing from Book 1: Krondor the Betrayal.
Book 2 centers around one of my fav Feist characters, Jimmy the Hand, and the wonderful :) sewers of Krondor.
Great read.
I recommend Feist from the beginning - Magician: Apprentice

4 out of 5 stars much better than Betrayal.......2003-08-04

Book 2 of the Legacy of the Riftwar

The first thing I have to say is that this is far better than Krondor: The Betrayal. This book feels more like a story rather than a series of action scenes slapped together and called Midkemia. The book opens shortly after The Betrayal and advances the story of something/someone threatening the kingdom. Squire James has more of a role in this book, as does Prince Arutha. For the first time in the series, William (the son of Pug) has a major starring role.

Something bad is going on in Krondor. There are mysterious murders occurring in the city, but instead of it being nobles or common folk, it seems that a lot of criminals are being killed. This wouldn't raise up a red flag, except that they are members of the Guild of Thieves: The Mockers. James is sent to investigate and learns that the Mockers have been overrun by a gang ruled by someone known as The Crawler. The leader of the Mockers, The Upright Man, is presumed dead and James suspects this is part of a plot not only against the Mockers but against the Prince as well. Someone is stirring up trouble.

At the same time, the Duke of Olasko (a duchy later appearing in The Conclave of Shadows series set a century later) is passing through and visits Krondor. He wants to hunt, so Arutha assigns William and some other soliders to escort the Duke. During the hunting trip they are attacked and it seems that someone is trying to start a war between Krondor and Olasko (or the Kingdom of the Isles, and the East). This raises the stakes even more as this mysterious enemy is fighting on several fronts.

Krondor: The Assassins deals with the fight to save Krondor from within as well as stop those trying to kill the Duke of Olasko and prevent a war. As I said, this was much better than Krondor: The Betrayal, and while it doesn't measure up close to Feist's other work like the Riftwar Saga, this was a fairly enjoyable read. It is a step back in the right direction, at the least.

3 out of 5 stars Must be because it's not based on the game..........2003-06-20

...but out of the three book series that is the Riftwar Legacy, Assassins stands as the best of the bunch. However, even the best is nowhere near Feist's previous works.

The Legacy series was based on the Betrayal at Krondor and Return to Krondor games, neither of which I ever played. But, even someone who has never ventured into the digital version of Midkemia will immediately recognize many, many videogame trappings within both Betrayal and Tear of the Gods. Fetch quests abound, plot points are thrown at us so conveniently, as if the novel was actually moonlighting as a strategy guide. The results are two ultimately disappointing slices of bread that sandwich what is actually a pretty darn good novel.

Assassins is about Squire James, formerly Jimmy the Hand who is trying to find out what's going on to drive the Mockers, the guild of theives that operates in the sewers of the city Krondor, to near exinction. He must find out what is causing this, plus what other evil rests within the city, in the form of someone known as the Crawler. Throw in the possibility of an unknown element poised to ignite a war between two nations and you have the makings of a rousing adventure.

Ok, this isn't on par with the amazing story arcs in the Riftwar and Serpentwar sagas but it is leaps and bounds better than both Betrayal and Tear of the Gods. We get to see Jimmy and William, the son of Pug, Duke of Stardock, fleshed out a bit more, and along the way we get some pretty good, not great, but good reading to boot. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Thank god, no video game.......2003-03-05

This is really the only worth-while book to read out of the Riftwar Legacy books because it was also the only book not based on a video game. Although I'll admit, its fun to play as Jimmy the Hand, and then read the adventures in print-form after beating the game - but if you didn't play the games, I can't imagine you'd have that great of a time reading this series. Except for this book. 100% original.

Ol' Mistah Buzzard was right. Trouble was right at the heels of Reddy Fox, although Reddy wouldn't have believed it if he had been told. He had stolen that plump pet chicken of Farmer Brown's boy for no reason under the sun but to show off. He wanted everyone to know how bold he was. He thought himself so smart that he could do just exactly what he pleased and no one could stop him.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for children.......1999-10-17

I just reread the Burgess books at the age of 21, and I still find them as interesting, fun, and educational as I did when my father read them to me when I was little. These books have a timeless quality to them, and once you have read one, you want to read them all. The Aventures of Reddy Fox, being the first of the 20 bedtime story books, grabs your attention in this way. I would definitely recommend all the Burgess books as a must for parents to read to their children. These books are also an interesting way of learning about different species of animals in a way much more fun than studying an encyclopedia.

4 out of 5 stars The Planet Traffickers.......2005-06-29

While the first three volumes of Wake were pretty-much stand-alone stories, this volume continues the plots revealed in 4 (The Sign of the Demons) about planet trafficking. Navee is off to see Ribwund who was sent to prison in an earlier adventure. She hopes to get information regarding the planet traffickers who have infiltrated Wake at all major levels.

In the first story, Navee's craft is sabotaged and she crashes on an unknown planet. There she is befriended by a local species that seems to be in perpetual war with machines. The war has split the society into the men who are soldiers and the women who are protected and do all of the rest of the work including providing sexual favors to successful soldiers. Strong-willed Navee, placed with the women, finally rebels at the end of the day instead of providing rewards. She then proceeds to use her unique talents to effect major changes on the world, its society, and the war.

With her ship repaired, Navee continues her mission in the second story. She infiltrates Ribwund's prison just as major riots break out. They may be a cover to assassinate the ex-general. Navee manages to get caught right in the middle of things. We have long-standing crime rivals, rioting, cover-ups and a surprise character that has encountered humans prior to meeting Navee. But no matter how tough the odds, Navee is not a quitter.

Both stories are really part of a whole. The series overall seems to be moving in a more coherent direction that in the first three books (although this volume has serious ties to volume two). A lot happens in this book and a lot of it will have repercussions on later stories. It really makes me wish that the next volume would come out right away. This volume does not stand alone very well and volumes two and four really should be read in order to understand what is really going on. Check it out.

                                    Book Description

It all starts with good horse sense. Anyone who understands how horses think, knows the basics of good horsemanship, and is aware of general safety practices when working around horses already has a leg up on what is necessary to train a horse.

STOREY'S GUIDE TO TRAINING HORSES is a comprehensive volume that builds on that foundation and takes the trainer step-by-step through the training process, from handling the foal to ground work to mounted lessons and trailer training. While most training books focus on riding, this guide takes a broad view, presenting different methods and alternatives so you can tailor your approach to your particular horse.

Author, rancher, and horse trainer Heather Smith Thomas explains how to avoid common mistakes and how to ensure mutual respect and a productive working relationship with your horse. She begins with training psychology - including how to think like a horse and the origins of the flight or fight response. Then she covers handling and positive, progressive training techniques for each stage of the horse's development. And since each horse is different, Thomas offers a variety of training methods designed to suit different temperaments. Furthermore, she emphasizes that a smart trainer puts the horse first, letting the horse learn at its own pace rather than trying to force the animal to an unrealistic training timetable.

Complete with a glossary of equine terms and a list of resources for additional information on horse training - including training clinics - this is an authoritative reference for trainers of all levels.

                                    1 out of 5 stars Awful!.......2007-09-23

My husband checked out this book from the library because he got interested in working with my horses. I thought maybe I could learn something from it, too, so I started reading it. I was not impressed. All the book had was hypothetical situations, but nothing on how to correct behavior if your horse wasn't already perfect. For example: I have a yearling who I will be breaking to ride in two years. I was interested in how they went about with the initial mounting, etc. They suggested that you have someone hold your horse, then you lean on your horse, then you get up and viola! You are ready to start. I envision my horse maybe taking a step forward. Or maybe stepping to the side. Or backing up. Or perhaps even throwing in a buck. Do they cover this? Not at all, because obviously if you're training your horse right your horse would never even think of taking a step to the right, or stepping forward, or throwing in a buck the first time you mount him. The horse would stand perfectly still the first time ever that you mounted, so these issues don't need to be addressed. Nor do they cover how you should go about it if you don't have someone to help hold your horse. The entire book is like this-essentially, it is an idealized version of how to train, taking into account that your horse does exactly what he is supposed to the first time around and is never confused by you adding something new. And if your horse IS confused the first time you try something new, then obviously you did a very poor job training him. I do not recommend it at all for anyone who is actually serious about horse training.

4 out of 5 stars From soup to chestnuts........2007-08-06

Comprehensive and informative. The central theme is act early and act patiently. Lightness of pressure and knowing when to stop a lesson turns your horse into a dependable collaborator instead of a skittish adversary, Heather Smith Thomas writes.
"The essence of training is to use less and less pressure as the horse learns to respond, until he will perform the correct response at just the slightest touch."
Track trainers and others concerned about the seemingly increasing fragility of racehorses get food for thought from Thomas's tips.
                                    Some examples,
                                    1) GELD A MALE WHEN HE IS A FOAL...Perhaps doing this later, something done with some frequency in the racing world, lessens racing prowess.
                                    2) HORSES HAVE SENSITIVE EARS...Then why are some racetracks located near airports and busy roadways? Isn't this likely to impair performance? Are gambling interests being put before horse health?
                                    3) HORSES SHOULDN'T BE RIDDEN UNTIL THEY'RE 3 YEARS OLD..."The bones and joints of a two-year-old are not mature enough to handle athletic work with the weight of a rider." Although watching juvenile thoroughbreds compete is thrilling it's likely to be causing shorter careers. The handling of 2007 Preakness winner Curlin (who didn't race as a 2-year-old) might represent a new/old paradigm for restoring soundness to the racehorse. Perhaps this also points to why so many Kentucky Derby winners are "homebred."
Harness racing newcomers get a thorough explanation of the difference between trotting and pacing. Pacing, although far more prevalent in U.S. standardbred competition, is a less natural movement for the horse (in which the lateral legs move together) and is accompanied by less support, balance and traction on wet footing. Could this state of affairs also be shortening racing careers?
Desire for breeding dollars and slow-growing purses have certainly done their part to curtail track careers. Year-round racing is also highly cupable. And, more generally, as Thomas reminds us, being a racer is not a natural condition. Racing techniques must be taught, often done in a constrained and artificial atmosphere.
"Most horses never do a racing trot," she writes, "and many don't know how to extend their trot while ridden."

Great book for all levels and all abilities of riders. It DOES talk about a lot of basic things..such as SAFETY, tacking up, leading, handling, etc. However, it also addresses other things such as longeing, ground driving, trailer training, lightness and collection, lateral work, retraining the spoiled horse, and many other things without causing fear or distrust.

I've been working with foals for about 18 years. This book is well written and includes very good illustrations. It's good for new handlers and experienced handlers (reminders of different options to use with different personalities) as well. I highly recommend it!

I found this book very helpful. I imagine it would be quite helpful for the novice trainer, but even as a trainer with a little more experience I found it quite useful. At first glance it looks, perhaps, elementary, but it does a fantastic job of tying all the elements of training together so that one knows what to do and when to do it. Even the sections on picking the horse's feet and other basic skills have some trouble shooting information and ideas about how to best teach a foal. I thought it was wonderful. I definitely recommend it.

Metal awards and decorations of the Third Reich are decribed in exhaustive detail with the aid of 266 photographs. Front and back covers show 26 decorations in full color. The numerous classes of the Iron Cross are examined (with every recipient listed in the case of the rarer grades), along with all military decorations from the best-known to such obscurities as the Army Balloon Observer's Badge. An extensive section also covers decorations awarded for service in the Spanish Civil War and numerous Nazi Party and State decorations. Sections are also devoted to storing, cleaning and appraising decorations.

3 out of 5 stars A flawed, but good beginners' pocket reference.......2001-04-26

This book is a concise, standard reference work for Third Reich medal and badge collectors. Sadly, this field is a veritable minefield for collectors with fakes/copies/reproductions now possibly outnumbering original items. With reproduction techniques daily becoming more sophisticated (as prices soar), it is vital to use this work as a basic identification guide, but not as an absolute final authority of an items' originality. Especially useful is the organizational listing of badges and medals by types (e.g. Luftwaffe badges, Army badges, campaign medals, gallantry medals etc.) with a list of known manufacturers' contract LDO numbers, along with estimated numbers of badges/medals awarded. Information provided is limited by space and this can be frustrating as many awards (the Iron Cross for example) easily provide enough variation to require a complete book. The photos are crisp, but frustratingly small. The author is especially fond of the Eagle Order (once awarded to Lindburgh) and this section of the book is the most complete and well done. A number of very rare items are included (e.g. The Dunkirk Shield) but the overall effectiveness of the work is marred by the inclusion of several unawarded badges (the Army Balloon Observers' badge, the Luftwaffe Sea assault badge, the Balkan Shield) and outright fakes (e.g. the Lorient shield, type 1). While the author does often point out that these questionable medals/badges are rare and sometimes suspect, the collecting community would have been better served by a more complete treatment of these items. Several novice collectors I have met have sadly spent large sums of money on copies made in the 1960s, stating that they felt sure they were a rare and valuable find because they saw them in this book. Sadly, the authenticity of even a number of the items on the actual cover of the book has been questioned by medal historians. Overall this is a book worth having, but not a definitive work on the subject.

This book is superb. Mary and Connie combine elements of the main quilt to create other great wall quilts. Plenty of material to come up with your own ideas also! Patterns for a tea cozy and set of placemats are included.
The Sun Block would be sweet made into an "over the door" quilt. The dog block would make a nice throw pillow for the little one in your life. Each block could stand alone as a little quilt. Great for that small area that needs just a little something extra.
These quilts will satisfy the experienced quilter, yet are easy enough for a beginning quilter to enjoy working on them!

                                                    Book Description

Blending unconventional film theory with nontraditional psychology to provide a radically different set of critical methods and propositions about cinema, Moving Image Theory: Ecological Considerations looks at film through its communication properties rather than its social or political implications. Drawing on the tenets of James J. Gibson’s ecological theory of visual perception, the fifteen essays and forty-one illustrations gathered here by editors Joseph D. Anderson and Barbara Fisher Anderson offer a new understanding of how moving images are seen and understood.
Focusing on a more straightforward perception of the world and cinema in an attempt to move film theory closer to reality, Moving Image Theory proposes that we should first understand how cinema communicates information about the representation of the three-dimensional world through properties of image and sound.
