Los Angeles, 1965, right after the Watts Riots, six summer days of racial violence--burning, looting, and killing--that followed the routine arrest of a black motorist for drunken driving. Although custodian and unlicensed PI Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins stayed safely inside during the turmoil, as an African-American male he understands all too well what it was about. "It's hot and people are mad," he explains in Walter Mosley's Little Scarlet. "They've been mad since they were babies." Even with the rioting finally cooled, police remain on edge. So when a mid-30s, redheaded black woman named Nola Payne--aka "Little Scarlet"--turns up dead in her apartment, strangled and shot and showing signs of recent sexual contact, the cops are reluctant to storm L.A.'s minority community, looking for her murderer, especially since the culprit may well be an injured white man Payne had sheltered, and who's now disappeared. Instead, they ask Easy to see what he can find out about this crime.
The case forces Rawlins to address the ethnic tribulations of 1960s America, in microcosm, and his own discomfort with discrimination, in particular.
I spent my whole early life at the back of buses and in the segregated balconies at theaters. I had been arrested for walking in the wrong part of town and threatened for looking a man in the eye. And when I went to war to fight for freedom, I found myself in a segregated army, treated with less respect than they treated German POWs. I had seen people who looked like me jeered on TV and in the movies. I had had enough and I wasn't about to turn back, even though I wanted to.
But Easy can't tackle this investigation alone; assisting him are the casually homicidal Raymond "Mouse" Alexander, as well as a dogged white detective and a fetching younger woman, who threatens to overturn the settled life Easy has been working toward all these years. Nor can Rawlins wrap the case up easily. Harassed and attacked for his inquiries, he eventually connects Payne's slaying to a homeless man, allegedly responsible for killing as many as 21 black women, all of whom had the bad judgment to hook up with white men.
Little Scarlet, the eighth Rawlins novel (after Bad Boy Brawly Brown), is unusual for Mosley, because it focuses as much on the credible mechanics of crime-solving as it does on the exposition of character and the exploration of L.A.'s mid-20th-century black culture. Combined with the author's vigorous prose and prowess with dialogue, Easy's promotion to serious sleuth promises great things for what was already a standout series. --J. Kingston Pierce

pure Mosley- pure joy!.......2007-10-11
As the author of NATIVE INTELLIGENCE, Native Intelligence I am a big fan of mystery books. And I LOVE Walter Mosley. My biggest fear is that one day I will run out of his 'Easy Rawlins' mysteries. "LITTLE SCARLET" is one of his best. It grabs you from the first page, catapulting you back to the time of the Watts riots when tension between whites and Blacks was raw and constant. Walking the edgy line between the two, while trying to solve the murder of a beautiful Black woman, 'Easy' is once again on a search for clues to her death all over L.A. Mr. Mosley's descriptive style paints a vivid picture of Life in those times and in those places...from the suburbs to the slums. Thankfully, when the situation gets too intense, he throws in a hilarious line to let you catch your breath. Once again, I devoured this offering just as I have the ones that came before...thankful that I had ordered "Cinnamon Kiss" and have that to look forward to. But there is a certain sadness that I have to leave "Little Scarlet" behind, knowing that I have ended one more sojourn in 'Easy's' world.
The Throes of Violence.......2007-01-21
Lucky Dime Liquors has been burned to the ground. Manny Massman, the owner, cries. National Guardsmen are present in Watts. Easy Rawlins has his office over the shop of a cobbler. He has kept himself inside, filled with pent-up rage.
Detective Melvin Suggs seeks him out. Rawlins fought in a segregated army. Now there is an angry voice in his heart. A white man may have choked and killed Nola Payne. Nola was trying to save him. He was being chased by rioters. Rawlins is starting to feel a connection between himself and the people caught up in the throes of violence.
Easy Rawlins is forty-five years old. Mouse is a serious man who has killing in his blood. Easy had to remove him from his telephone listing. Being the friend of Raymond Alexander, (Mouse), gives Easy access to the neighbors of the dead woman. Easy is trying to carry out an investigation for the LAPD who fear official action will result in more rioting. Easy learns that Nola had been an organized woman.
At Florence Avenue Bookshop Easy finds out that Paris Minton, the owner, managed to keep his shop from burning down by having Fearless Jones, next to Mouse the most dangerous man in L.A. and a former commando, guard the shop with him. The Watts riot is the beginning of the break up of the community.
Easy goes to find Mouse at the Cox Bar. He discovers there that Nola had a friend, Loverboy, whose real name is Nate Shelby, a car thief. After the riots Mouse enters the underground economy, buying and selling the looted goods. Easy and Mouse join forces to shake Nate Shelby out of the tree. Easy finds the white man Nola saved through finding the ownership information in the car Nate has taken. The man is still alive, and probably not guilty of the murder.
A bum, Harold, is a suspect in the murder. In awful fashion it is learned that there has probably been a serial killer at work and cops have overlooked many of the clues. Easy himself went to the police in regard to an earlier homicide and basically was given the brush off by the authorities. This is a fabulous book. Little Scarlett is a pet name for Nola.

W. Mosley is a solid writer who never seems to let me down. Anything with his name on it I'll read.
Fantastic.......2006-10-15
Mr.Mosley keeps you on the edge from beginning to end! That's what makes a great writer, and he does that with this book, believe it!
Fascinating!.......2006-08-25
This book was loaned to me because someone thought I might like it. I've read most of Robert Parker and Elmore Leonard's novels and I enjoy a good mystery. I had heard of Walter Moseley but didn't know much about his books.
I'm not quite old enough to remember the Watts riots. I only know what I've read and heard from people who watched it on TV or were sent there with the National Guard. I realize that this is a novel and that there are parts that are fictional but there is some history in it.
Moseley's Easy Rawlins has to figure out who killed a woman and why this one person, out of the many who died in the riots, is so important in the bigger picture. Easy has been in and around Watts for years and you have to figure that Moseley was just waiting to write a book with this backdrop. Since reading Little Scarlet, I've gone back and read the first four books in the series. In all of the books, there is always a sense of the times for a black man in the U.S. and in Los Angeles but this story gives us one specific, important instance to build a very compelling story.
For the mystery, the characters, the perspective and the history, this is a great novel. I know people who don't read a lot of mysteries who really liked this book because it is so much more.
Of course, if you haven't read the earlier books first, you will have some plot points revealed in Little Scarlet that will take away from the previous stories when you do read them. Maybe this isn't best of his novels but if you only read one Easy Rawlins novel, I think this should be it.

All of these confusing relationships collide at the Rose Bowl Parade, leaving Christy wondering what in the world is happening. Big changes for Christy. .......2007-06-01
Christy Miller finally feels like she's growing up. But her new responsibilities make her wish she wasn't. In STARRY NIGHT, the eighth book in Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller series, not only does she have a job monopolizing most of her time, but her new freedom to date is also causing its own share of problems. Christy is upset that she ended things so badly with ex-boyfriend Rick. When he comes back from college to visit her, she hopes to put their rocky past behind them.
However, Rick seems less interested in making amends with Christy and more interested in spending time with Katie, her best friend. Katie has long warned Christy about falling under the dangerous spell of Rick's charm, but now she seems to be doing it herself. Christy's old "beach friends" have made lots of plans for Christmas break, but with work and a surprise trip with her family, Christy is forced to miss out. Things only get worse when Katie begins tagging along with Christy's friends --- without Christy.
Christy becomes increasingly jealous as Katie and Rick start spending more and more time together. Meanwhile, Christy is forced to spend most of her winter break at a mountain cabin with her Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob --- not exactly her idea of a good time. Over the holiday, Uncle Bob asks some tough questions that challenge the faith Christy once thought was so solid.
However, things begin to look up when Christy's parents surprisingly agree to let her attend the Rose Bowl Parade with her friends. She remembers watching it on TV as a little girl in Wisconsin and can't wait to become a true Californian and experience it firsthand. At the parade, Christy can't help but wonder when she will see romantic interest Todd again; he left to join the pro surfing tour, leaving many unanswered questions about their relationship.
As the book comes to a close, Katie discovers some unpleasant things about Rick that lead her to wonder if she really was right about him all along. Will it be in time to save her fractured friendship? Even more drama is in store as a surprise appearance from an old friend means big changes for Christy.
In STARRY NIGHT, Gunn once again manages to avoid the usual clichés of teen fiction and gives young readers an engrossing and often unpredictable story. Fans of the series will enjoy the new plot twists and character development, and most likely will be refreshed to see some long-present drama come to a close. The book's ending, as typical of the series, leaves much to be anticipated in upcoming installments.

Starry Night Reflections..........2003-02-01
I read these books for the first time about two or three years ago, and have been re-reading them again recently. They're such good books. In this novel, Christy again feels the restrictions placed on her by her over-protective parents when she has to spend Christmas with her family instead of her friends. But Marti steps in and the Rose Bowl Parade turns out a pretty good experience. Only, all her relationships seem up in the air. She hasn't heard from Todd, can't find a chance to talk with Rick, and even ends up on the outs with Katie. And why hasn't she ever noticed Doug this way before? This is one of my favorite Christy novels...I love her "starry night reflections."

WOW!!! This book is one rare, hard to put down book!!.......2006-03-14
THE STARRY CHILD is one of the best love stories I have ever read!! The characters are very likeable and real as they deal with their impending doom. Lynn Hanna has written a book that is a very rare find!!! Read it as soon as you can along with its sequel which is just as good!!!
Magical.......2003-10-16
Three years have passed since Alan Nielson, a caring father and wonderful husband, died. Alan's positive outlook on life brought energy and stability to anyone he touched. His widow Rainey has had to bury her own grief over the loss of her beloved spouse because their daughter Sasha has not coped at all with the loss of her idolized dad, who affectionately dubbed her the "Queen of the Woodland Fairies". Instead, Sasha has not spoken one coherent word since she learned that her father was never coming home again.
Sasha occasionally speaks in gibberish, leaving the medical profession and unsympathetic neighbors to believe that she should be committed to an institution. Rainey's friend, who never heard the child speak before, recognizes the gibberish as a form of Gaelic. She convinces Stanford University Linguistics Professor Matt MacInnes, who speaks fluent Gaelic, to visit the Nielson home. Shockingly, the little girl and the teacher easily communicate. However, Sasha's story is even more frightening as she describes the tale of a long dead Scottish princess whose mission on earth is being carried out by a small American child.
THE STARRY CHILD is one of the most imaginative love stories to have been published in several years. The mixing of the mystical myths of the Celts with modern day California is brilliantly designed, making for a unique, crisp story line. The three main characters are all warm and real as they struggle to deal with a perilous inevitability that most likely will lead to their doom. If this is any indication of her creative juices, Lynn Hanna has a long time destiny of her own as a very successful writer.

Wow!.......2003-09-21
Lynn Hanna sure knows how to write a beautiful book! This is a lovely story about a mother and daughter and the man they meet who will try to straighten out the mess their lives have turned into.
Images of Scotland take the reader there, and the characters will endear themselves to you. I love a good paranormal romance novel and this is one I highly recommend to all.
I hope Lynn Hanna has many more books in the works.
Beautiful imagery, wonderful characters, magical story!.......2003-09-17
Rainey is a woman who has been through hell and back; her eight year-old daughter, Sasha, is her saving grace. Rainey has lost her husband in a plane crash, and Sasha now exhibits strange speech and dangerous behavior.
After Rainey's older neighbor, Emma, hears Sasha speaking in the "old language" of Gaelic on a video tape, she recommends that Rainey get in touch with linguistics professor, Matt MacInnes. What Matt discovers about Sasha, and how it will turn their lives around, is the spellbinding part!
Lynn Hanna sure knows how to weave a spellbinding, beautiful tale of romance, Scottish magic, and mystery. The cover of the new Novel Books edition is just gorgeous, too. But, it's what's between the covers that will hook you to this incredible storyteller.
THE STARRY CHILD is a definite keeper for me, and I can't wait to read the other books in this series.
A beautiful new edition!.......2003-09-15
You must have this beautiful new edition of The Starry Child, just now available. It's a magical story of love and mystery. You'll love it!

Delicious recipes.......2007-02-25
I am so glad I bought this recipe book. There are so many wonderful recipes and I've tried a few already. I love Cajun cooking and I wanted an authentic "on the bayou" recipe book to keep on hand for inspiration. I am so delighted with this book and have recommended it to friends and family. For me, there's nothing better than cooking a meal steeped in love and tradition, and one that is truly tasty for sure. I grew up on similar recipes that took hours to make, that is the essence of comfort food. I love to prepare and then be near a pot of Cajun goodness simmering away on the stove top for hours, having some wine or beer, and enjoying the company of my family or friends while the promise of good food scents the air, rich with savory meats, seafood, veggies, and spices. Top 100 Cajun Recipes of all time - Heaven!
Excellent survey of homemade Cajun recipes. Buy It........2007-02-06
`The Top 100 Cajun Recipes of All Time' from the editors of `acadiana profile' and `The Justin Wilson Cookbook' are two excellent little sources for Cajun (Arcadian) recipes. Their primary value lies in both their relative authenticity and in their low cost. For a more complete source of `relatively authentic' Cajun recipes at a slightly higher cost for over twice as many recipes, I suggest `Cajun Cuisine' from the Beau Bayou Publishing Company.
It's interesting that all these books come from very local sources. In this regard, they share a characteristic of some of the best Pennsylvania Dutch cookbooks. This is easily understandable, as unlike `Southern' cooking and `Tex-Mex' cooking, Cajun and Pennsylvania Dutch cooking both come from just a few counties in just one state (Louisiana and Pennsylvania respectively).
While both of these books are inexpensive and `kitchen friendly' (will lie flat on the kitchen table while you cook), there are some important differences. The `Top 100' book is simply recipes and nothing but recipes. Justin Wilson's book has fewer recipes (and NO INDEX!) but lots of homey observations so familiar to anyone who saw him on his PBS cooking shows. Another big difference is that in spite of the fact that Wilson was an `amateur' cook, he was an `amateur' in much the same way as Julia Child was an `amateur', in that they did not cook in professional (restaurant) kitchens, but they knew a whole lot about cooking technique and their technique did show a lot of professional touches. To be sure, Child was a much more accomplished teacher and literally a more accomplished researcher into her chosen field than Wilson, whose primary attraction was not `technique', but `bon hommine' (sic).
Two things which set Wilson apart from `The Top 100' is his use of stocks and his cooking with wine. Wine certainly appears in some `Top 100' recipes, but it appears in almost half of Wilson's recipes and many recipes are named for their use of wine (even the French have just a few recipes named for their use of wine).
The biggest question I have about `The Top 100' is whether this means the best recipes of the 100, or the 100 most distinctively Cajun recipes. Since the latter is much less subjective, it would be much more valuable than the former, as one can always use the book to find the most distinctively Cajun recipes and feel free to improve on them. The introduction suggests that the editors had both objectives in mind. I will concede to them the claim that these are the 100 most typical Cajun recipes, as no one should be in a better position to know than a local publisher of local recipes which has been in the business for many years.
On the question of quality, I remain agnostic, but I will do a little survey on my favorite recipe, the turtle soup, to see if there is a chance that `The Top 100' does have `the best recipe'. First, a look at the recipe itself reveals that it is truly a recipe for the amateur cook, as it does not use a prepared stock, unlike both Justin Wilson, Emeril Lagasse (see `Emeril's Delmonico'), and Paul Prudhomme (see `Chef Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Kitchen'). Thus, it reflects a home kitchen that does not have the resources to prepare stock in advance or a nearby supermarket with ample supplies of chicken stock. It's interesting to see the progression of complexity from the home recipes to Lagasse to Prudhomme to the ultimate classic French recipe in `The Escoffier Cookbook'. On the basis of this little survey, I have to believe that one should qualify the book's title to be `The Best 100 HOME Cooked Cajun Recipes of All Time'. This is evident from the fact that almost all recipes have a source of a local Louisiana home cook! It's also interesting to see the progression in this series from no stock to chicken stock (Wilson and Lagasse) to combination of chicken and turtle stock (Prudhomme) to pure turtle stock (Escoffier).
One thing I notice in both books which simply has never come up in all the hours I have spent watching Emeril on the Food Network. This is the common use of `oil' rather than either butter or pork fat in many recipes. Wilson goes further to specify olive oil, and this is well before we all became familiar with how good olive oil and the whole `Mediterranean diet' was for us. It would be the ultimate irony to find that Justin Wilson's red wine and olive oil recipes were `healthy'.
To make up for this, there is also a fairly common use of `prepared' staples here, such as `American cheese', Worchestershire sauce and Lea and Perrins sauce. (What is surprising is to see Emeril use `A1' sauce also in his Turtle Soup). `The Top 100' uses a bit less of the prepared stuff, but does use `oleo' more often. Please replace `oleo' with real butter. It's actually better for you.
Both books fully embody everything I ever heard about `Cajun' cooking, most especially the use of the trinity of onions, celery and sweet peppers (replacing the French carrots in the classic mirepoix). Even where the three are not used together, celery and sweet peppers seem to find their way into just about everything, especially given the high number of braised and casseroled dishes using lots of aromatics.
I confess that like Jean Shepherd's writing, Justin Wilson's Cajun accent and wry expressions simply don't come across as well in print as they do on the screen, so the extras in his book have limited value.
For the price, I recommend both; however, `The Top 100' may have a longer shelf life.
Do you really want to know how to cook Cajun Food?.......2000-06-30
My wife and I are avid fans of Cajun and Zydeco music, and we take trips to Louisiana as often as possible to go to festivals and dance. On one of our trips we stopped by The Cajun General Store in Lafayette to do some souveneir shopping. I spied "The 100 best Cajun Recipes of All Time" on a book rack. It was a humble little pamphlet and very reasonably priced. I figured that any book that made that boast for so little a financial risk was worth a try. That gamble paid off with years of great eating.
I haven't tried all the recipes, only about 20. Not only have I not been disappointed, I have eaten some of the best food of my entire life. You won't find Paul Prudhomme in this cook book, but you will find Manning "Pete" Broussard of Lafayette Parish. Never heard of him. Well, don't feel bad, no one outside of his family has probably heard of him either. You see, these recipes were collected by Acadiana Magazine over a period of 20 plus years. The were sent in by true Cajuns who probably learned the recipes from their family members who had been perfecting them for generations. Most of the recipes are very simple. For example, there is a chicken stew recipe that I frequently make, and most of the time, I only need to buy chicken to have everything I need to prepare it. If you follow the instructions, you really do not need to be a great cook to prepare great Cajun food. But you do need patience, because most of the recipes require several hours to be prepared right.
I can't emphasize enough what a great buy this book is. If you like to eat great comfort food, you will be forever grateful that you purchased it. If you don't believe me, try this recipe and see if you are convinced.
Chicken Stew
2 tablespoons butter - 1/2 cup flour - 1 onion, chopped - 1 bellpepper, choppped - 1 rib of celery, chopped - 1/2 cup of chopped parsley - 2 cups of water - 1 chicken, cut up - Salt and pepper to taste - 1 teaspoon of garlic salt.
1. Make a roux by blending butter and flour in a sauce pan and continuously stirring over medium high heat until dark brown. Stir vigourously and don't burn.
2. Add everything and cook until the chicken is boiled off the bone. Cull out all the bones, cartiledge and skin. Serve over rice.

It's in the genes.......2006-11-10
I bought this book to see if I could train my dog in livestock protection. Not! What I get from the book is that you have to buy the right breed, and they will do it instictively, there's not all that much you have to do to train them except expose them to livestock at the right age. However, the book is well written, so I enjoyed skimming through it. I have a neighbor who uses one of the recommended breeds to guard her kids, and I think that's such a great idea in these days when parents seem to have to be afraid of letting their kids stay even in the back yard.

Addresses both the adolescent and mature dog.......2004-05-06
From wolves hungering for sheep to foxes in the henhouse, ranchers and farmers have always had to deal with the problem of predators. The use of dogs as a front line of defense against predators has achieved even greater popularity with the rising trends prohibiting the use of poisons, traps, and guns. Now in a newly revised and expanded second edition, Livestock Protection Dogs: Selection, Care And Training, by Orysia Dawydiak and David E. Sims defines what constitutes a livestock protection dog; surveys the various dog breeds; provides key advice on puppy selection; addresses both the adolescent and mature dog; identifies specific behavioral probelms and their solutions, and more. If you are in need of a dog to protect your property and your livestock, Livestock Protection Dogs will prove to be invaluable reading.
Check out the new version!!.......2004-04-24
I hope you have found your way to the page for the new, revised version of this book, published in 2004. If not, search books for the co-author "Dawydiak", and this will bring you to the page where the new version can be ordered.
This book is written by co-authors who have been involved in breeding and working with livestock protection dogs for over 20 years. They bring their wealth of experience and common sense to the book. The things they write are based on a great deal of experience.
The book contains breed descriptions of various livestock protection dog breeds. Seventeen breeds, some quite rare, are discussed, as well as mixed breed dogs. Breed descriptions are given, including the major assets and drawbacks of the various breeds. Photos of excellent working dogs of various livestock protection dog breeds appear throughout the book. Discussion of breeds moves to selection of a pup, and the authors remind us that all of these breeds have important things in common and that within breed differences may be important. Selecting a breed might come down to the need for a shorter coated dog in a warmer climate or simply the fact that a good breeder with satisfied customers lives nearby. One breed is not necessarily better than another, but a pup from a good breeder from a specific breed may be the best choice for a given situation.
A moment for a word on what livestock protection dogs are: These are dogs that protect livestock from predators. They are big, athletic and smart, especially if evaluated in terms of what they do well raather than what other breeds do well. These are not "herding dogs". Nor are they urban property protection dogs. Their temperament is uniquely suited to forming family bonds with livestock and then protecting their livestock family as well as their human family. While they will protect their human family, persons seeking an urban-type guard dog may find other breeds more suitable for this role. These dogs are not good for "schutzhund" training, for example.
This book concentrates on livestock protection dog breeds. The main focus is on working dogs, but a chapter on keeping these dogs in companion animal roles is included, and much of the information presented to the livestock raiser would also be useful to the person wanting to learn more about keeping one of these dogs in a "domestic" setting. In discussion of health or behavior issues, the emphasis is on those which are common to livestock protection dogs, leaving aside the general issues of canine health or behavior issues. General dog information can be found in other books. Good info on livestock protection dogs is hard to come by.
A chapter on breeding is worthy of consideration. The authors have been breeding and working with Akbash Dogs for over 20 years. They exemplify the modern, conscientious breeder who is concerned about whether her pups go to good homes and who are willing to follow through with assisting the people who receive these pups to take care of them. It is pointed out that the purchase price of a dog is small compared to veterinary bills and other liabilities that can come with the dog. Therefore, it makes sense to invest in a sound pup from a reputable breeder.
The book is not especially heavy to lift but it is densely packed with useful information. The writers bring scientific understanding, years of experience and common sense to writing this book for the owner or prospective owner who wants to get the most these dogs, whether in a companion or livestock protection role.
Centered on Turkish guard dogs, but overall a great book........1999-03-26
It is an excellent book on raising and maintaining a livestock protection dog. I have used the book many times when I have a problem with my dog. The authors seemed to be on target in their methods compared to the other books I have looked at. It is an excellent book I would recommend it to anyone.

Book Description
Chitons form a peculiar and highly interesting class of molluscs, known with certainty to exist since the Ordovician, and widespread in all world seas to depths from 0 to over 7,000 m. In recent years taxonomists all over the world have much contributed to our knowledge of the chitons and their synonymy, so that the number of living species now amounts to some 800. The authors propose to not only compile all actual knowledge about the living chitons, but, where possible, a after a careful study of the type material, to systematically describe and illustrate every known -- or hitherto unknown -- species. In most cases the detailed figures are new and drawn by the senior author, P. Kaas. The Monograph of Living Chitons is planned to appear in ten volumes.

Book Description
Writing about oneself, says Patricia Foster, "engages in truth but depends on the imagination, on the life just beneath the skin, a life that's impressionistic and fragile." These eleven closely linked personal essays are at once an absorbing chronicle of a life fully undertaken and a model for anyone who has contemplated self-investigation through autobiographical writing.
The book's three sections each convey a stage of Foster's journey-still ongoing-toward new levels of insight and maturity. "Inside the Girls' Room" takes us back to Foster's life in the rural South from the 1950s through the early 1970s. Here she reveals the mixed messages and stereotypes of southern womanhood by which she was raised-and from which she fled. With adulthood, Foster moves to "Inside the Writing Room," a place dotted with discoveries about autobiography as a path to creative expression and inner coherence. Finally, at the place in her life Foster calls "Inside My Skin," autobiography helps her to explore and to claim her cultural identity. Returning to her native South, she holds a writing workshop for a group composed mostly of middle-aged black women, visits a beloved maid from her childhood, and returns to old haunts as a witness to her concerns about race and class.
This gathering of lyrical essays explores the intelligent, intuitive heart of a woman struggling to claim both her identity and her place in the world.
