A KILLER BACHELOR PARTY
Carnegie Kincaid plans weddings, not stag parties. When a client asks Carnegie to manage a pre-wedding blow-out—complete with a stripper—she tactfully refuses the job. So why is Carnegie peering through binoculars across the Seattle Ship Canal, watching a shapely Santa Claus turn naked inside a hip dockside bistro? Because her own significant other—with whom she is having some significant differences—is at the party too. And, so it turns out, is a killer. When the body of the groom’s best man is pulled from the canal the next day, critical questions arise. What did Carnegie really see through her binoculars? More important: What will she tell the police she saw? As a wedding planner, Carnegie has her connections to maintain, and before she points Seattle’s finest to some possibly innocent suspects, she’ll look into the crime herself. But while Carnegie is snooping around, word of a witness has gotten out—and now
a killer is watching her...

So enjoyable!.......2006-06-09
This is the best mystery I've read in a while. The writing was impeccable, the characters interesting, the mystery kept me guessing, the Seattle setting was unique, and the protagonist wasn't irritating. I even had to pick up a dictionary for several of the words in the book. Imagine: a mystery that elevates my vocabulary.
A killer bachelor party.......2005-09-23
Carnegie Kincaid is a wedding planner in Seattle. Normally she doesn't plan stag parties. She plans weddings. But, her new client insisted. After she left the party, she ends up looking through binoculars to watch the party. Why? Her significant other, although they're currently having trouble, is at the party. What she doesn't know is that a killer is there, too.
The next day the best man is pulled from the canal. Who could have killed him? What did she see in those binoculars? Anything important? After she tells police what she saw and gets a friend in trouble, she decides she'd better look into things herself before telling them anything else. She gets Aaron, her significant other, to help her.
Not only does she have this New Year's Eve wedding to be planning, she has another Christmas wedding to plan. And now Ivy, the mother of the bride for the New Year's Eve wedding, has asked her to plan another party.
Since the murder is related to that wedding, she wants to spend as much time as possible with the parties to try to determine who could have been the murderer. Can she do that before anyone else is murdered, including herself? Plus what about her new love interest? Will this muddy the waters?
Carnegie is a great character. She is a lot of fun, and she gets herself into predicaments throughout the book. I felt it was a very believable story, and a lot of fun to read. I can't wait to read more.
I am originally from Washington State, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading a book set in Seattle. I think the author does a great job of weaving the wedding planning and the sleuthing.
I highly recommend this book.
Good, breezy writing.......2005-01-22
Seattle-based wedding planner Carnegie Kincaid has a lot on her plate. Dry rot has forced a temporary evacuation of her home and office, a rented houseboat moored on the east shore of Washington's Lake Union, and from her interim quarters she is overseeing the final preparations for two end-of-year nuptials. Preparations for the Buckmeister/Frost Christmas Eve wedding aren't unusually problematic, but the blowout Carnegie's planning for New Year's Eve proves to be a trial. For one thing, bride-to-be Sally Tyler--the daughter of renowned conductor Charles Tyler and his superstar CEO wife Ivy--is a spoiled rich girl with the people skills to match. For another, the groom's disagreeable best man turns up dead the morning after the bachelor party, and Carnegie--spying on the debauch for her own reasons through a pair of binoculars--may have witnessed the prelude to his murder.
May the Best Man Die is the third book in Deborah Donnelly's series of Wedding Planner Mysteries. (I have not read the first two books in the series but plan to remedy that fault.) It's a tightly-plotted mystery with a likable protagonist and good, breezy writing: "So, roundly cursing Ms. Tyler and the stack of wedding magazines she rode in on, I climbed into my van [the Vanna White Too, by the way] and drove south." Readers looking for a quick, well-written cozy will find Donnelly's series delightful.

I am having such a fun time reading each book in this series. I can't wait for the next book to be released.
It Only Gets Better...........2004-03-15
Deborah Donnelly has a great series with her sleuth/wedding planner - Carnegie Kincaid. The plot/subplots are great and her wedding and party planning ideas are pretty good as well.
I would not have missed reading about the Christmas wedding for anything. The "Killer B's" were great. I am going to miss them and hope that somehow they'll be included in the next book if only slightly. (Kind of how the southern Sheriff always managed to appear SOMEWHERE in the James Bond movies.)
This is not a "gruesome" murder series. It is a joy to find another great read.

Amazing! How does he come up with this stuff?!.......2006-03-02
Like the first book in this series "Virtual Mode", this is another wonderful trip into an area never gone to before in a novel and a unique way of getting there. As a writer, Mr. Anthony never ceases to amaze me! He always entertains while educating you at the same time.
Interesting book.......2001-04-21
This book is very interesting, covering a variety of topics from child abuse to in-depth discussion of fractals, love to culture, society to magic. Piers shows an acute knowledge of the scientific aspects of what he writes about. The book seemed to focus a little too much on helping Nona, and not enough about the MAIN characters, but this didn't detract from the book too much. The settings are varied, as always with Anthony, as are the characters. Anthony provides much insight to what Colene is thinking, which I think is the most interesting part of the book-- to see how she reacts mentally to things like stress, Darius, her parents, etc. There are heartwarming moments, and some interesting happenings back at good old normal Earth. Many different things happen, settings change quickly, minor characters come and go, but the plot runs smoothly enough and what the gang learns along the way is interesting and their adventures are still fun, sometimes amusing--they get stuck in one really odd situation in Nona's reality! If you read Virtual Mode and are interested in how Colene and Darius' relationship will grow and change, and how Nona plays into their scheme, and if Colene and Darius will EVER settle down back in Darius' home reality...this is a good book for you.
Confused?.......2000-08-13
I think that people looking for a book that they can just chill with, litrally switch their brain off and read are going to hate this book. It has references to maths, explanations of magic, totally-twisty landscapes, in depth character profiles and a totally confusing multi-reality storyline. Oh, and some sexual references too, which might wake some up. This is the second book of the series that touched me, I love it and could recommend it (and have) to anyone. Read it, read them all! I await the arrival of my Chaos Mode book.. and whats this I hear about another!
Fractured Mode.......2000-04-22
Perhaps slightly better than Virtual Mode, but not by much. Again, I recommend this for juveniles and not adults. It seemed to me that the book was really a series of short stories strung together. There is the initial conflict with the despots of Nona's world but Anthony gets away from that quickly but returns to it in the end to wrap things up. Darius is really a minor character in this book which is surprising. The sexual references are getting really old by now. Anthony's description of fractals is hard to follow, and I was a math major! An illustration in a future edition would benefit the reader in showing the layout of the Fractal Mode. On to Chaos Mode which will finish up this series. If there is another book in this series, I plan to steer clear of it.
I did not like this book.......2000-03-24
I have read some of Anthony's books in the past, and I thought I would like the Mode series, but I was wrong. This book seems more like a math lesson than an adventure story. I liked the plot and the characters somewhat, but it seemed like Mr. Anthony was trying to ram this math concept down my throat. I don't think I'll ever read this book again.

Dinosaurs and a New Earth.......2005-05-23
I love these crazy plots. Dinosaurs are appearing and disappearing in central London. How and Why? The Doctor is called upon to answer these questions. And of course to save all of mankind. After all, anyone can solve a simple little problem like dinosaurs in modern London, but if all mankind needs saving it takes the Doctor :)
A fun read, the Doctor has Sarah as his companion in this one and the fine folks at UNIT to provide an assist. As with all these novilizations I have read so far there is lots of action, but not a lot of explanation of the thoughts in people's minds that drive these actions. Also as with all these I have read so far it is a quick fun read, a couple hours of enjoyment.
The end could be taken as a bit preachy, but you can just take it at face value and you have a satisfactory conclusion to a fun story.
Jurassic London.......2000-11-21
The TARDIS returns the Doctor and Sarah to London, which is strangely deserted. Trying to stop some looters, they are arrested by soldiers who are part of the force policing martial law. They do not know why London is abandoned, but escaping from captivity, but soon come face-to-face with a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Where did this (and other) dinosaurs come from? Who is behind the return of these mindless creatures?
A Doctor Who serial I have never seen (it was not rated for General Exhibition, so Australia's ABC didn't show it), my only experience of this serial is this novel and some photos. Some of the ideas underlying it are good (I won't explain about how the dinosaurs arrive, as that would give away the book...), but the main problem is that the story is repetitive - every so often, dinosaurs will arrive.
Malcolm Hulke's adaptation of his own script is quite readable despite this repetition.

Very disappointed.......2006-09-30
I bought this book because over the half the recipes were supposed to be wheat free. My son is allergic to wheat, not gluten, and can have oat, rye, and barley. But he is allergic to wheat, and that includes spelt, which IS a form of wheat. (We tried spelt, and he is definitely allergic.) I am very disappointed - Because he has multiple allergies (also eggs and milk), I don't believe there's a single recipe in the book that I can use. Anybody want my copy?
Bread Machine .......2005-09-11
I found that most of the recipes were based on the premise that the person has a breadmaking machine. I don't. You can still use it to make the recipes I suppose but it doesn't give the details of time and temperature. I wouldn't have ordered it if I had known that.
gail.......2005-09-08
This book will give recipes for wheat free and regular types of bread. Very helpful. I do enjoy it.
excellent 100% rye bread recipes.......2005-02-15
I'm allergic to wheat and spelt, but I can tolerate rye and some other grains. Most baking books either have wheat in every recipe (and I mean *every* recipe), or else they are completely gluten free (yech.) Easy Breadmaking for Special Diets contains a wealth of recipes for *everyone*. There are many that contain wheat or spelt; there are also many that are totally gluten free. There are vegan recipes, yeast-free recipes, etc--truly something for everyone. For me, there are some excellent recipes that use 100% rye flour, that have turned out beautifully in my bread machine. I never thought I'd get to eat a good sandwich again but this book has proved me wrong.
Good.......2001-12-31
My mother is allergic to wheat and so am I, so this book is a godsend to us, as it means we can now eat sandwiches. However I live in Ireland so I found it difficult to get used to "cups" rather than pounds & ounces, but once I learnt one cup is 8 fluid ounces, I discovered it is actually an easier and more accurate measurement of ingredients than using weighing scales. I actully want to advise anybody from Ireland reading this - guar & Xanthan gum (essential for gluten-free bread recipes) is very difficult to purchase in Ireland and I had to purchase from Oregon, USA. The postage cost more than the products, and delivery took 10 weeks....

Handy and Complete.......2005-04-30
Definitely a very good reference guide for any freshwater enthusiast. The mini-atlas has every freshwater species beautifully diplayed in color photo. Under each color photo is a group of symbols. These symbols are defined in the book itself. The symbols convey what water conditions are appropriate, size of tank, food, swimming level, breeding type and level of aggression. The mini-atlas also has separate chapters on breeding, fish diseases, aquarium plants and tank set-up.
The only negative point is that each fish is called by its scientific name. If you desire to know the common name (the name used in aquarium shops) you have to go to the back of the book and search an index of scientific names which then refers to the common name. This process is a bit cumbersome.
All in all, this book is a nice addition to one's personal freshwater library. It's very complete and I find myself referring to it often.
A disappointment........2004-08-19
From the reviews, I expected alot from this book. I know that it is old, but I was really disappointed. The information is not consistent and incomplete. Here are my issues:
(1) All the pictures are grouped (i.e. Ciclids, etc.) together followed by the complete text instead of a picture with text of each kind of fish.
(2) Everything is ordered by scientific name instead of common name. This makes the book less usefull to those who are new to freshwater fish.
(3) Compared to other books, the photographs are not that good. In fact, some of them are out of focus.
(4) The fact guide is totally useless as the information on how to intepret the what the legend means is not clear. For example, you see a temparature guide but not the upper or lower temperature.
(5) With that many pictures the book, I expected the book to focus on different species but instead there are multiple pictures of the same kinds of certain fish just because they have different color scheme.
(6) The biggest complaint that I have is that the information is not consistent and some are missing. Some pictures have both scientific and common names while others have just one name. Some have complete information, while others have partial (i.e. tank size, compatibility, etc.) or NO information at all.
If you are buying this book because you just want something to read, go ahead and buy it. However, if you are buying this book because you are new to the freshwater fish keeping and need information about different kinds of fish to choose from...this book is totally useless. Useless, I say because there are more books out there with more complete information. If you look at the index and can't find the names of the fishes that you commonly see in aquarium fish shops, then the book is useless.
Occasionally difficult, but a great reference.......2002-08-03
Need to know if a certain breed of unusual fish is compatible with, say, your angelfish? Dr. Axelrod knows. This atlas is amazing in it's depth for a "mini-atlas," with page after page of freshwater fish. And then he gets into the real meat of fishkeeping after that! Although it can occasionally be difficult to use (the fish are listed by their scientific name in general, not their common name, which can make looking up a certain fish difficult), all in all this is an incredible book, and one every fishkeeper should have on their bookshelf.
Informative.......2002-02-26
This book was great. The pictures were fantastic and it was very informative. It is simple enough for a child to use.
One of the best resources for the freshwater fish keeper........2000-12-14
This is one of my favorite books. It provides information and more importantly photos on nearly 2000 fish. The information gives you the basics about each fish, how big they get, what they eat, are they agressive, etc. But the best aspect is the photos. With over 1900 photos it is the first book I go to when I want to look up a fish. Or when I'm thinking of what to put in that empty tank I'll often browse through this book looking for neat fish.
This book gives you the most for your money!

Excellent.......2007-06-04
I bought this book when I started getting really into the hobby and I absolutely am impressed with the quality of the photos, how the fish are separated by continent and other useful information. I frequently check back with the names of the fish and where these fish come from. I guess the only not serious complaint is that it does not contain the common name for the fish, only the latin. Although, I could see how hard it could be to list the several common names of each fish, since it's already so huge!
Dr Axelrod's Atlas of Freshwater Aquarium Fishes.......2007-01-10
The book delivered by Amazon was in Excellent Condition.
This Book displays pictures and details of fishes not available in other Atlas I have bought, so it is worth every dime.
Large, clear pictures of all freshwater fishes, great for reference.
Lots of pictures... but what is this fish?.......2006-08-16
I bought this book to help me identify fish. Have it worked so far? No.
First, it only names the fish in latin (scientific) name, which is a little frustrating to me. Sometimes, I need to cross info from other sources to reach the specimen I'm looking for.
Second, you need to know the continent where it comes from.
I've also found some errors in the information. The freshwater stingray, for example, is catalogued as an egglayer, while it's a livebearer fish.
This books is huge, and looks great in your library or stacked in your desk.
Impressive Picture book; useless otherwise.......2006-07-26
This book has changed a lot since the first edition. Mostly, it has removed information and added pictures. LOTS of pictures. It is more of a coffee-table book than any kind of aquarium guide. But even the pictures are of uneven quality. I was shocked that the only picture included for a couple of fairly common fish were of dead, poorly-preserved specimens. Yikes!
The authors' stated purpose for this book is "This book was created with the express purpose of making the identification of fishes easier for hobbyists, aquarists, and scientists alike."
Well, if that was the goal, it fails miserably. The book is organized based on geographic area where the fish originates. Think about it. If you saw a fish and wanted to know what it was, would you somehow instinctively know which continent it came from? Of course not. You might want to identify it based on its colors or shape or whatever. The book does not function as an identification guide.
Although most info has been removed, there is some very terse info below each picture as small text and icons. The text lists info such as pH, ideal water temperature (in Centigrade), maximum adult length (in cm), and minimum tank size (in litres). Although it does not tell you what these mean, any intermediate or higher fishhkeeper should be able to figure it out.
The icons are not particularly clear unless you already know the fish. For example, the icon for egg-scatterer versus livebearer is only obvious if you know what the fish is to begin with. More importantly, I can find nowhere in the book where it actually tells what the icons mean. This is very sloppy.
The index is also horrendous, failing to include a number of entries, and including numerous false entries. For example, the first page entry listed for Scleropages jardini sends you to a page that does not contain pictures of jardini, and in fact is a section for a different continent.
Even the quality of the pictures is uneven. For some fish, the coverage is extensive, with a lot of pictures showing different color strains, breeding colors, and so on. Yet for other fish, the coverage is incomplete. For example, there are three pictures of Silver Arrowana, and all three show just-hatched arrowanas. Why not show an adult? The fish changes as it gets older. Also, there are only four pictures of Astronatus (Oscars), showing only 4 color patterns. It's absolutely shocking to me that the abino and tiger albino forms are not shown. They've been in the trade for well over a decade before this edition was published.
My last complaint is that they have been adding pages by adding them as decimal additions. For example, they added 16 pages of pictures of Swordtails (16 pages!) after page 432, and numbered them as pages 432.01, 432.02, etc. The reason for this, of course, is that it means less work adjusting the index, etc., and 16 pages in one place from a publishing standpoint is easier, because it means not changing the rest of the plates. But from a reader's standpoint, it is sloppy and unforgivable, considering the price of the book.
To summarize, this book contains an incredible array of pictures. On the plus side, it has pictures of many fish you'll find nowhere else. It is massive and impressive. The pages are slick and glossy and the physical production standards are high. On the down side, it is badly in need of extensive, high-quality, detailed editing to correct the numerous glaring errors and omissions.
Frankly, this is overall a hugely disappointing effort and I simply can't recommend plunking down such a high price for this edition.
An Atlas and Little Else .......2006-03-26
"ATLAS" is defined: A volume of tables, charts, or plates that systematically illustrates a particular subject: an anatomical atlas. That's what this book is and nothing else. It has both a scientific name index and a somewhat handy Popular Names index and usually several plates (pictures) of each species. This book can be used for two purposes. If you have the name of the fish, you can find pictures of the species from the indexes. One can also puruse the many pages of pictures and find something that interests them and then go to another book for detailed information. That's about it.
There is some very basic information on the plates given in symbols including pH, hardness, temperature, length, (no ranges given, just apparently the conditions when the picture was taken). Also minimum tank size, feeding, reproduction (i.e. egg layer or something else), lighting, temperament, aquarium set up (i.e. substrate or none; plants or none, etc.) and swimming habits. That is very minimal information. The book does devote 85 pages of pictures to Koi (Cyprinus carpio). I also noted that 2 of the 4 pictures of the Siamese Flying Fox (Crossocheilus siamensis) appear to be wrong as the lateral line does not go into the tail and the edges are smooth. For most aquarium fish hobbyists, this book would be a disappointment. If you are looking for many pictures to aid in identification and little else, then this Atlas is for you.

Book Description
For two hundred years the great wilderness of the American West was being opened up and slowly destroyed by settlers from the east. Their prime tool was the gun, and the longarm and pistol have achieved legendary status in the folklore of the Wild West. In the hands of scouts, cowboys, ordinary settlers and Native Americans the gun helped to forge an era that was to draw to a close at the end of the nineteenth century. Firearms of the American West tells the story of the guns used in the West during this period, which included the Indian Wars, the Civil War and the Gold Rushes. Copiously illustrated, no Western fan or gun enthusiast will want to be without this book.

Fab!!.......2005-10-15
This is a great book! It has help me locate my style. It seperates people into six different style style types. Dramatic, romantic, trendy, classic, traditional, and sporty. It gives you a quiz that you take, plus a collage you can make as well that helps you determaine what your exact style is. Once I found my style type which turned out to be Dramatic, all of my style woes clicked into place.
You really have to look at yourself, and your style to get a lot out of this book.It took me a while to figure out that I was a Dramatic, and thought for a long time that I was a classic, traditional and even a romantic. Me being a dramatic might explain that I go everywhere more dressed up then everyone else and why high style and standout detailing id so important. Part of the problem I had with this book was because I was still a teen when I first bought it and I did, like all teens experiment with fashion . Once I found my niche in this book, everything clicked and I was able to fit myself into the dramatic .
This is also a great book because you are not shoved into style type, the author talks about accenting, IE you might dress like a romantic, but you may have somemore dramatic pieces. This gives people space to move.
The other piece I like about book is that it talks about colors with out being so fanatic as in Color me Beautiful, a book which also tells you that you have to be curvey to be a romantic, or pixish to be a sporty.
The only complaint I have about this book is that it is a bit out of date. Please take out the leggings and shoulder pads! They are out! But, because this book has timeless advice, I am willing to give this book 5 stars.
Have fun with your style!!
Helpful, but needs to be updated.......2004-04-16
I have always had an interest in developing my style and have sought out many books to help me. This title is one of the better ones I have read although it needs some revision and updating.
I like the general concept of the six basic styles, and agree with most of her examples. I did find it helpful and now I understand how to choose what will suit me best. At first I was suprised to see what category I fell into most,(Romantic), but as I gave it more thought I realized it's true. Now I have a clearer picture of what to look for when adding to my wardrobe.
My criticisms of the book are the following. It needs to be updated as some of the celebrities are getting dated. Photos and/or drawings of some style examples would be helpful. Also, her answers to some of the questions are somewhat vague and make it hard to determine what type to choose. I had to be careful not to pick what type I wanted to be instead of what my answers show me to really be. A multiple choice quiz might have been better, followed by a writing exercise to help you figure it all out.
If you can find a copy of this it is still worth buying.
Limited and outdated.......2004-03-18
Hartman has one insight: women and men fall into one of six basic styles: sporty, romantic (bohemian for men), traditional, classic, dramatic, and trendy. She doesn't provide much information about the style types beyond naming them, so it is not easy to determine your type (preferences in hairspray and shoulder pads aren't relevant to women who aren't stuck in the '80s), and she doesn't offer useful advice about building a wardrobe based on "your" style type (she uses a case-study approach without outlining the basics of each type). Clothing and accessory examples are dated and often universally unflattering (stirrup pants? jodhpurs? colored jeans? suspenders? keys on a long necklace?), and Hartman's personal color theory is emphasized (eggplant means you are hiding from your creativity, evergreen is unimaginative but moral, etc.). Overall, the book is annoying and of limited use--with the exception of the author's basic insight that each of us can identify and live, work, and play in clothing compatible with our personal style instead of being confined to a corporate or other sort of uniform. Unfortunately, Hartman doesn't do much to help us identify or use our personal style. I bought this book cheaply (used) and didn't feel that it was worth even that small price.
You'll Look Fahbulous, Dahling!.......2003-03-13
I found Fabulous You! very helpful in determining style. Essentially illustration-free, but that's not too big a deal; you really don't need it. It's about style, and making it work for you, not about seasons and colors. But it's *really* good at finding your style.
Hartman has a matter-of-fact writing style. She's friendly, no-nonsense and encouraging; it's like getting advice from an old friend who tells it like it is. I really enjoyed this book. I found it to be very helpful in finding the right style for me, and in how to incorporate it into my life. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who's got major closet chaos, and needs to DO something about it. Buy this book if you just can't find the style that suits you. I really like Hartman's approach and personality, and happily recommend Fabulous You!
This book helped me accept myself........2001-08-31
My mother is a Traditional, my mother-in-law is a Classic, my sister and my best friend are both Romantics, and my husband likes the Sporty look on women. However, I'm a Trendy....and for most of my life all these well-intentioned loved ones tried to dress me in the styles THEY liked. As a result, I had a closet full of clothes that were perfect for other people, and always felt like I had nothing to wear! This book did so much to help me realize that it's okay to have the personal style that I've always had, and that I'm at my best when I am making the most of what I am instead of when I'm trying to please everyone else. My style and my life have always walked a different path than the mainstream, and I just don't have words to adequately express how empowering it is to finally accept that it's okay to be different from everyone else--and that my uniqueness is something to celebrate! Now my closet is filled with clothes and accessories I love and wear all the time, with no "clunkers" that belong in someone else's wardrobe. And I constantly receive compliments, even from strangers, on my clothes--because I'm wearing the style that expresses me! Shopping is WAY more fun now too. Thank you, Tori!

Book Description
Rebecca Primus was the daughter of a prominent black Connecticut family who was sent south during Reconstruction by the Hartford Freedmen's Aid Society to teach newly freed slaves. Addie Brown was a domestic servant in Connecticut and New York City--as well as Rebecca's best friend and romantic companion. These two spirited, intelligent women wrote letters in this astonishing, historically priceless volume. Beloved Sisters and Loving Friends breaks the long silence surrounding the lives of black women in America and reveals an amazing world until now unknown.
"I have today put my second class into the third Reader," wrote Rebecca from the school in Maryland's Eastern Shore that was later to bear her name. "I hear the President Johnson expect to be in Hartford the 26th," exclaimed Addie. "I wish some of them present him with a ball through his head."
Shared passion, ambitions, frustrations, politics, gossip, all the fascinating minutiae of daily life, give these unique letters extraordinary flavor and richness--and offer us an unprecedented piece of American history.

more photos.......2001-03-05
this book was very interesting in that one could explore the eIvertyday goings on of a time that we're so far removed from.I would like to have seen many more photos. You can identify much more with the characters in this way. from a historical point of view it was quite enlightening to see how black americans took a hand in their own destiny what with all the odds staked against them. we can see the format that is used even to this day. another interesting point is that there is noting new under the sun. It seems some of the everyday occurencess still prevail today under different circumstances. Though at times the letters were a little boring and written without prpoer punctuation, it helped to bring out the true personality of the writer. All in all for me it was a trip back into time.
Critical glimpse into nineteenth-century black life.......1999-07-20
Farah Griffin, editor of last year's "A Stranger in the Village: Two Centuries of African-American Travel Writing" has done it again with "Beloved Sisters and Loving Friends." This wonderful collection of letters between Rebecca Primus and Addie Brown allows readers to enter the world of nineteenth-century black American life. Through the correspondence of these "ordinary" women, the reader gains invaluable perspective on the social, political, economic and religious concerns of blacks around the time of the Civil War. In addition, the correspondence between these two loving friends is a welcome addition to all the historical collections of letters, diaries, etc. that document so well the white American experience while neglecting the experiences of black Americans and others. This collection is important and timely and I applaud Professor Griffin's achievement of giving voice to these two women and the world in which they lived.
A patched-together narrative that needs massive editing.......1999-07-12
Very disappointing book. This is not "co"-respondence--it's two separate sets of letters that don't speak to each other; thus there's no dialogue. Further, the editor did not do her job of cleaning out the underbrush, so the letters are unflaggingly boring in their ungrammatical microdomesticity. Only now and then is there a flash of insight into the broader historical/sociological picture. This book is merely an assemblage of transcriptions interspersed with short bursts of mostly redundant editorial comment. With maps, historical timelines, sidebars, and incisive editing, this book could have been much more. As it is, it reads and feels like no more than a senior high school term paper. Shame on all concerned.
