Book Description
A gripping story of buried truths, deceit, and sudden, brutal death from the
New York Times bestselling author of Long Time Gone.
All manner of sinners and sufferers come to the rehab ranch in Arizona when they hit rock bottom. For Seattle detective J.P. Beaumont, there is a deeper level of Hell here: being forced to room with teenage drug dealer Joey Rothman. An all-around punk, Joey deserves neither pity nor tears—until he is murdered by a bullet fired from Beaumont's gun. Someone has set Beau up brilliantly for a long and terrifying fall, dragging the alcoholic ex-cop into a conspiracy of blood and lies that could cost him his freedom . . . and his life.
Customer Reviews:
Classic Jance.......2006-12-28
I love this series...when does something else come out?
My husband is from Seattle, so reading one of these books is like taking a little trip to downtown and hanging out like we used to do.
A Good J.P. Beaumont Mystery, But Don't Make It Your First.......2004-08-06
Minor in Possession opens with Seattle homicide detective Beaumont drying out in an Arizona rehab clinic. Despite non-stop rainshowers and a rising river, Beau is still a fish out of water, trying to cope with a soon-to-deceased roommate, hostile clinic staff, and visiting family members dredging up his unfortunate past. It'd be enough to drive a person to drink, except of course that's the reason he's in rehab to begin with.
Following his roommate's demise and an attempt on his own life, Beau finds himself on both sides of the investigation and travelling around the state in an ever-increasing number of rental cars. The action is fast, and so are some of the women he meets. The ending is a bit overly sentimental, but getting there is certainly fun.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My only caveat is don't let this be the first J.P. Beaumont mystery you read. If you're not familiar with the Seattle detective's history - his lifestyle or marriage to Anne Corley, for instance - read Until Proven Guilty or the more recent Partner in Crime before reading this novel. References to Corley and things like Beau's Porsche are dropped in unaccompanied by much context, which is unusual for Jance. Unless you know what she's talking about, you'll be as much a fish out of water as her detective is at times while tackling this mystery.
I love JP Beaumont!.......2003-08-04
As with all the other tales of Beau, we are taken on another thrill ride not knowing were we will come out, or in what shape.
Start with JP first Book so you understand him.
Then read all his stories in succession.....that's one read you will not be disappointed in.
J.P. Beaumont in the desert.......2000-06-15
This book offers quite a change of scenery for fans of the J.P. Beaumont series. The Washington born-and-bred policeman ends up in a rehab center which is a real contrast to his usual surroundings in the Pacific Northwest. His discoveries of things such as snakes and flash floods offer comic relief from the investigation into the death of his teen-aged roommate. In this book we also catch glimpses of his ex-wife and children, and he seems a bit more human as he goes through the rehab process. If you like Beaumont, you'll probably like this book.
Past and Present.......2000-01-30
One of my favorite Beaumont mysteries. Perhaps I was thrilled in my recognition of landmarks, as I grew up in Cochise County not far from Montezuma Pass. Jance intrigues her dedicated readers not only through an active storyline, but with real places. As I currently reside in the Puget Sound, this one hit the jackpot with me! Pinch me, is this really fiction? Maybe I'll head over to Seattle PD just to make sure Beau really isn't there!

Product Description
Dead to Rights: Joanna Brady-devoted mother and the first female Sheriff of Cochise County, AZ-knows what it's like to lose one you love, and her heart still aches over the murder of her policeman husband. But her sympathy for a tragically widowed ex-cop has placed Joanna's future in jeopardy-and brought her face-to-face with death in the high, loney desert. On their 19th wedding anniversary, Hal Morgan's wife was fatally struck down by a drunk driver-and the courts punished her killer with only a wrist-slap. A year to the day later the irresponsible motorist is murdered and all fingers are pointing to Morgan as the perpetrator-except Sheriff Brady's. But Joanna's gut instinct is leading her into a maelstrom of danger and deception, as she trails the truth from a ghostly mining camp to the rocky spires of the Chiricahua National Monument. Because now an assasssin is turning his sights on her.
Minor in Possession: An extended stay in an AZ alcohol rehab ranch is not J.P. Beaumont's idea of a carefree vacation, especially with a teenage drug dealer as a roommate. It only gets worse when the punk is shot dead with Beaumont's own .38. Someone is trying to frame him for the murder of Joey Rothman, but that's not the end of Beau's problems. Because if he doesn't find the killer before the killer finds him, the recovering Seattle detective faces a fate far more unpleasant than cold turkey: either a long stretch in the State cooler...or an even longer one beneath the cold, cold grond.
Product Description
9 CDs. Approximately 9.3 hours. The Arizona alcohol rehab ranch was no picnic for J.P. Beaumont. First they stuck him in a room with a sleazy, teen-age drug dealer named Joey Rothman. Then they sicked the local law on him when the punk was discovered shot dead with Beaumont's own .38. But the party responsible for Joey's early check-out wasn't satisfied with simply framing Beaumont for murder. Suddenly the Seattle detective faced a choice of fates far more unpleasant than cold turkey: a long stay in the State cooler . . . or even a longer stay beneath the cold ground.

Exciting adventure!.......2000-10-31
Darkloom is full of action, adventure, and intrigue. I was happy to find it and happy to take it with me to work on the bus to read. Recommended for all who enjoy well-written fantasy and good characters!
Disappointing.......2000-07-18
Deathweave and Darkloom both have the potential to be very good stories. Unfortunately, Osborne focuses only on Arden to the exclusion of all other characters. While there is some minimal development of Rafe and Abbot Grayson, most of the background characters are exactly that - background. We get very little sense of the other characters motivations or aspirations. What could be a very complex tale comes out very flat.
Darkloom-another time and place, yet hits so close to home!.......1999-02-03
Fasten your seatbelts, hangon for dear life, and prepare yourself for yet another action packed adventurous romp courtesy of the resilient and insightful Cary Osborne who has blessed the lover of Sci-Fi futuristic fare with an emotionally endearing sequel to Deathweave. After author Osborne captivated her readership with a climactic roller coaster ride of fast paced turn of events to finish off the drama, intrigue and mystery of Deathweave, it was hard to imagine a successor tome that could further maintain or improve upon the plot and character centered around her heroine Arden Grenfell and the rest of the mainstay principles on the planet Glory. Once again Osborne delivers in grand fashion without missing a beat. Picture Nancy Drew, all grown up, with a very modern day woman's perspective and attitude, complete with a special forces military training background acquired at a reclusive countryside monastery during her impressionable years; throw in an extra dash of strength, wisdom, courage and resolve while maintaining a touch of her youthful innocence and tender caring heart, then zoom forward a few centuries in time. That's Arden Grenfell. Arden's mission is to preserve the peace on Glory, a world desperately trying to come to grips with its own erupting latent anarchy and civil war on the heels of finally achieving intergalactic peace after years of external planetary warfare. Arden's main squeeze and romantic interest, Captain Raphael (Rafe) Semmes, is a likeable rogue salvager who plays the perfect complimentary role as a mischievous sleuthing midlife Joe, a la Hardy Boys fame. Often remote and inaccessible, both emotionally and due to chosen occupation, Rafe proves the typical modern man, sometimes incapable of commitment but willing to lay down his life at a moment's notice in support of Arden through heartfelt profession of his own terms of endearment to her. In a classical time tested story of good versus evil, and heroes matched against villains, writer Osborne displays, in her patent tantalizing manner, the uncanny knack for weaving into each and every personality she creates, the values, standards, hopes and dreams of several present day generations, themselves easily identifying with this world of the future and its fate inspired Glorians. If you're looking for a fun filled feel good fantasy to curl up with on a rainy day, or, searching for a surefire cure for those nagging blues, then Darkloom is the perfect prescription to fill the bill. Enjoy!
Interesting charachters and plenty of action........1999-02-01
Cary Osbornes' sequal to 'Deathweave' is even better than the first book of the series. Her main charachter, Arden Grenfell is an intrigueing one indeed, a woman warrior who places her honor and her duty to her country above all else, while clearly searching for some other meaning to her own life. The plots in this novel are intricate and complex, and the settings are vivid and imaginative. But above all else, it's the intensity and the detail of the sword fights and the hand to hand combat that gives this novel it's flavor.
One of the worst books I have had the misfortune of reading........1998-12-08
This book is an abysmal failure. Osborne's characters and world as rotten as month old roadkill. For some reason Osbourne seems to envision the military akin to a lightbulb, something you can just turn on and off in a second or replace by going to the corner store. Glory, despite being having fought a major intergalactic war to a standstill in the recent past somehow eliminates its whole military to the point where there arn't enought troops to guard the queen's castle from more than one command post! Storing all guns on another planet in a single huge armory (susceptable to being blown up), Glory's government has trouble even activating an armed warship in time to deal with a rebellion by a few fanatics waving swords. Osborne's inability to write coherently about anything military is reflected throughout the book by a multitude of shallow, false, trite combat scenes where a bunch of space travelling warriors go at each other with swords. Frankly, the only thing that would save this book is if Mystery Science Theater 3000 lampooned it.

Nana's Recipes Made Better.......2007-09-09
I was another one who bought this on its first release, only my copy was lost to me during a move. While I regret the loss of the hardcover, I bought this paperback as soon as it was again available (only to give it away and buy it again - yes, it really is THAT good!)
Beatrice Ojakangas has never steared me wrong in a recipe - ever. While I've tweaked and changed, I have never landed a complete dud following her suggestions. She sticks to the real ingredients (that means butter - not margarine, etc)and her recipes are always clear to follow.
This book allowed my family to recreate the baking of my childhood and in most cases go a step better, and as a result of it all my older children learned an appreciation for fine Christmas Cookies where the recipe mattered more than the artificially colored "decoration cookies" so common to our modern culture. I can't thank the author enough!
Exceptional Baking Book.......2007-06-27
This cookbook was quite obviously a labor of love for Ojakangas. A lot of research and thought was put into this book which contains traditional Scandinavia recipies, some fairly simple and some more complex. The only thing that could be an improvement would be a section of color photos showing the final products -- but there is no way I would take away a star just for that reason (especially because the book does contain many drawings).
The Great Scandinavian Baking Book.......2007-01-19
I just love this book. Everything I have baked from this book has gotten rave reviews from my family.
A treasure for bakers!.......2006-11-10
I bought this book when I first moved to Minnesota, figuring I ought to learn how to bake like a Minnesotan. What I didn't anticipate was how much enjoyment I would get from this book - the delightful scents of cinnamon and cardamon, the pleasure of a warm coffee cake laced with almond paste and fragrant with vanilla, complementing my morning coffee.
Every recipe I have tried has turned out well (though my cakes don't look as beautiful as the pictures, but I'm no artist); I think so highly of this book, I recently bought copies to give as gifts to friends who love to bake. In fact, though I have lots of recipe books, this is the one I usually turn to when I want to bake something homey and delicious.
Great baking book.......2006-09-27
I just picked this book up a few weeks ago and have already made several of the recipes in it. I'm impressed with everything. Clearly written, and I haven't had any recipe problems at all. Like other reviewers, I also enjoy and appreciate the short background she provides with the recipes - it's so enjoyable to think of these baked goods in context.
I love the organization of the book - breads, sweet roll/coffee breads, cookies, savory things (filled pockets and pies, etc). It's a long, full book, with lots of recipes - it feels like a basic and yet comprehensive survey. There must be huge numbers of recipes and variations for all of these things, but at the same time, you feel that she hasn't probably left out anything that's important or commonly eaten. At any rate, I'm thrilled with the things I've made so far and look forward to trying even more of them.

This is her first full-length book.
Customer Reviews:
nothing spectacular.......2000-05-10
I gained very little from reading this book. I'm sure it has helped others, but the solutions I tried weren't helpful in my dog's situation. I've had much better luck with other authors, specifically Sarah Hodgson.
Good book, but there is better........2000-03-28
This book gives some good training advice. For many problems, the author says to see a professional dog behaviorist. My dog was showing signs of mild aggression, and this book was not much help for my situation.
"Good Owners, Great Dogs" by Brian Kilcommons and Sara Wilson addresses more problems and gives solutions that work.
An excellent, informative & humane dog training guide!.......1999-06-14
The Toolbox for Remodeling Your Problem Dog is fun, reader-friendly, and is packed full of great information! Despite the book's title, your dog doesn't have to be a problem to benefit greatly from the training suggestions in this book. It also contains a wealth of behaviorial info and creative solutions rarely found in most other dog training books. Excellent for both puppies and mature dogs. I highly recommend it!
A wonderful book to help train difficult dogs........1999-03-21
This book is describes gentle training techniques to work with difficult problems in dogs. The training takes time and work, no book can do the work for us. But you can feel more in control and see better behavior in your dog if you follow the author's instructions. We use this book with Jean Donaldson's Culture Clash and Dogs are from Neptune. They helped us more than any of the many books and classes we tried. We're still working with our very difficult puppy but we see improvement as a result of using the methods described in this book.
A first-rate book on behavior problems!.......1998-12-05
Terry Ryan is a true gem, and her book is as good as she is! *Toolbox* goes through a number of common behavior problems in dogs and offers proactive solutions for them. Management, desensitization, counter-conditioning, and teaching alternative behaviors are all covered. If you would like a *humane,* positive, proactive approach to dog problems, instead of a punishment-based one, this is the book for you! Ryan explains when a problem is too much for the owner and recommends, in those cases, that a professional trainer or behaviorist be consulted. But many behavior problems are easily remedied by the right approach, and this book gives you the tools you need.
Book Description
Accompany a master woodcarving teacher as he reveals the secrets of his art--and build skills, confidence, and creativity. Decorative woodcarving brings ornamentation, depth, and pattern to a simple piece of wood. For everything from a wall plaque to furniture; the chisel or mallet equals the painter's brush. For the beginning carver, there's no more authoritative guide to tools, techniques, materials, and safety procedures than this complete course. Start with a Three Tear Drops design that provides a lesson in using the skew chisel. Progress to a Renaissance Style Leaf; a reproduction of a Colonial door panel; and repeating patterns. Carve pediments; lettering; a Jacobean cartouche; rolled scrolls; and more. Dozens of photographs--many taken in class--illustrate the right and the wrong way to proceed when picking up a chisel, knife, or mallet; making cuts; and carrying out a project. From drawing a design to completing a decoratively carved mirror, every detail is covered! 160 pages (all in color), 8 1/2 x 10.
Customer Reviews:
truly excellent.......2005-04-27
Absolutely magnificent ... extremely helpful. I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone who wants to learn woodcarving (and I have many books on the subject), it is a shame it is out of print but chase it up on zshops or marketplace, it is worth it. Well written, enjoyable and useful.
I would say, if you are going to get a single book on woodcarving, get this one - it shows you everything from tool selection (even pointing out the differences in mallet handle shapes and their advantages) to tool sharpening, then goes through many different projects building your skills with each one. The techniques are explained in detail, with all the subtle differences required. Examples are shown of works gone wrong - even though only slightly wrong - and an explanation given for what went wrong. It is more important to show what goes wrong than just show perfect examples, otherwise you would not even know what was wrong with your piece or how it could be improved. The examples cover everything and build a great skillset.
Also, the many, many, many photos are COLOUR, and excellent quality.
Considering what you would pay to do a course such as this, it's a steal.
a unique experience.......2000-05-31
I am the author of DECORATIVE WOODCARVING THE COMPLETE COURSE. This book is unique as it describes the real life experiences of a group of my students during their learning process. It encompasses the things that went wrong, how they should have been, why, and how they were corrected. It is a description of the reality of the learning curve for decorative woodcarving, about real people who started with no knowledge or skill and ended with a considerable degree of both. If you follow the text and illustrations, you too can enjoy these new horizons. We start with the background essentials of tool sharpening, drawing, modeling, and wood, and then move through a series of carvings each of which adds new skills and knowledge to complete the learning process.

Book Description
This book presents an innovative analysis of the role of imagination as a central concept in both literary and art criticism. Dee Reynolds brings this approach to bear on works by Rimbaud, Mallarmé, Kandinsky, and Mondrian. It allows her to redefine the relationship between Symbolism and abstract art, and to contribute new methodological perspectives to comparative studies of poetry and painting. The late nineteenth and early twentieth century was a crucial period in the emergence of new modes of representation, and is currently at the forefront of critical enquiry. This is the first book to examine Symbolism and abstraction in this way, and the first to treat these poets and painters together. It is an original contribution to interdisciplinary scholarship in art history, literary history, and comparative aesthetics.
Book Description
The bestselling autobiography now fully revised, updated, and available in paperback with the wealth of new information his fans have been waiting for - a spectacular account of his star-studded wedding in 2002, and the latest on his remarkable success worldwide, with his breakthrough in the USA and Australia.
