Murder in Little Italy.......2007-10-02
Excellent mysteries. The entire series is good, but this is one of the best. The characters become very real after the first book.
all the gaslight mysteries.......2007-10-01
This series is enchanting and develops under two plots the murder mystery and the relationship between cop and detective. The period selected is one of my favorite eras and is deveopled with wisdom and technique for the era involved.
Get away from every day life.......2007-08-27
For less than a lunch out you can escape to another time. The character's are enjoyable and have their own problems that continue from book to book. So unlike a TV show the problems are not solved in a 1/2 hour!
Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Mystery Series.......2007-08-09
I love all the books in the Gaslight Mystery series. They take you back to a different time and place. Her writing really creates a visual image of New York City at the turn of the century. Murder in Little Italy was no exception. The struggles between the Italians and Irish seemed very realistic. How awesome is Frank Malloy as a detective and the lovely Sarah Brandt as his sidekick! Crafted storytelling and intriguing plotlines made this book a very enjoyable read. I highly recommend anyone who enjoys a good mystery to give this series, and this book in particular, a read!
Murder in Little Italy.......2007-08-01
Victoria Thompson's books are alway entertaining. I only wish she would have had more interaction with Frank's little boy. I enjoy reading about New York City in the early 1900's and the horse and buggy and midwives. There is a slight romance but it is all clean.

ASIN: B000N4S7F8 |
Book Description
Donna Leon's charming, evocative, and addictive Commissario Guido Brunetti series continues with Suffer the Little Children.
When Commissario Brunetti is summoned in the middle of the night to the hospital bed of a senior pediatrician, he is confronted with more questions than answers. Three men -- a young Carabiniere captain and two privates from out of town -- have burst into the doctor's apartment in the middle of the night, attacked him and taken away his eighteenth-month old baby boy. What could have motivated an assault by the forces of the state so violent it has left the doctor mute? Who would have authorized such an alarming operation? At the same time, Brunetti's colleague Inspector Vianello discovers a money-making scam between pharmacists and doctors in the city. But it appears as if one of the pharmacists is after more than money.
Donna Leon's new novel is as subtle and fascinating as ever, set in a beautifully-realized Venice, a glorious city seething with small-town vice.
Presented unabridged on 7 CDs.
Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing.......2007-09-19
I have read all of Leon's Brunetti mysteries and this was the first time I was really disappointed. The story lacks focus and feels completely frazzled. There are too many things going on that never seem to get resolved. The writing style she uses for the interrogations at the beginning and end seems silly and doesn't make sense. I never felt a shred of sympathy for any of the characters, despite the horrible things that happen to them. I sure hope that she can find her old, captivating writing style again or I will have to just go back to re-reading her earlier novels.
Better than her last two books.......2007-09-08
Donna Leon is incredibly skilled at evoking the spirit of Venice, and Brunetti is such a marvelous character. Although not up to the standards of her earlier novels, this one is a vast inprovement over the previous two, which were little more than screeds on environmental issues. If you've never read any of her books, go for the early works; if you're a fan of Leon and have been disappointed by her more recent efforts, this is definitely a step up.
Suffer the little children...........2007-08-13
This book had an entirely different flavor than the other Commissario Guido Brunetti mysteries, all of which I have read, some of them more than once. It was less amusing, harder and more depressing than the others and the ending was terrible. If her writing is going in this direction, I won't read any more.
Venice forecast - beautiful with scattered corruption.......2007-08-11
The great enjoyment in Donna Leon's "Suffer the Little Children," and virtually all of the other books in this series, comes from the focus on the book's varied characters and the city backdrop, Venice. The plot of this particular book, involving illegal baby adoption, but also marital betrayal and the intrusion into peoples' lives by an unprincipled moralist, is secondary and only serves as the device that allows for an examination of the professional and personal life of Guido Brunetti, Commissario of Police in Venice. By the time you finish this book (and any of its predecessors), you're ready for a visit to Venice and have a yen to drop in on Brunetti and his family (however aware you are that, sadly, they don't exist).
Other readers have been disappointed with "Suffer the Little Children" for its flaccid plot and generally slow pace. I think those are valid criticisms, but there is still plenty of pleasure catching up with the series' hero and colleagues and listening to the author's gentle rant about troubles in paradise.l
The best yet!.......2007-08-04
Ms. Leon has surpassed herself with this suspenseful book. I loved listening to David Colacci who has read all of her books. He captures the characters she writes perfectly. I did not want this book to end. I only wish these two would visit the US so we could hear them speak about their craft.

Book Description
The peace of Wyvernwood has been shattered. The war between Angmar and Degarm has begun, and their conflict has already spread deep into the southern and northern parts of the Great Refuge. But the war isn't confined just to the race of Men. The Griffinkin, long jealous of the powerful Dragons, have allied themselves with Angmar and established themselves in the fortress called Redclaw. The first victim of all this mounting conflict was the great Dragon-leader, Stormfire. Yet, a series of books he left behind, collectively known as The Book of Stormfire, suggests that he foresaw many of these events, that he knew a time would come when the Dragons and all their mythological kindred and friends would have to abandon Wyvernwood and move on to a possible new Refuge. The books indicate that Stormfire created and hid three objects in various corners of the world: the Diamond Dragon, the Glass Dragon, and the Heart of All Dragons. Once found and united, they will show the way to a new homeland for the Dragonkin. The quest falls to Stormfire's triplet children. Only two can go, however. While two seek the treasures, one must stay behind to protect Wyvernwood, to rebuild Stronghold, and to stand against the forces martialling against them. Gathering a team that includes the last unicorn in the world, a wacky hummingbird, a group of human children, an outcast Griffin, and a cat-like Fomorian female, Chan and Luna set out to retrace the route by which Stormfire gathered and led the Dragonkin to Wyvernwood, while still searching for the legendary objects. Along the way, they will find adventure and danger and discover, to their surprise and alarm, that not all of the surviving Creatures of Myth followed Stormfire to the Great Refuge. . . .
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2004-07-09
Another great book in the Dragonkin series! The book follows Chan, Jake, Katrina, Morkir, and Skymarin as they search for a talisman beyond Wyvernwood, while Luna and Harrow stay behind to guard Stronghold. And of course, you also follow the trio of Marian, Ronaldo, and Bumble on their own adventures as well. Very interesting and left me waiting for anxiously for the third book!

No doubt about it: chocolate rules. Celebrating this happy fact is Marcel Desaulniers's Death by Chocolate Cakes, another installment in his bestselling Death by Chocolate series. These books bring chocolate sweets to, well, heart-stopping heights. Cake, which contains 50 or so recipes for goodies such as Chocolate Heart of Darkness Cakes (dense chocolate cupcakes with a molten chocolate-truffle center) and Excessively Expressive Espresso Fantasy (chocolate ganache-filled chocolate espresso cake topped with espresso mousse), also includes formulas for chocolate ice creams, drinks, and sauces--all in all a true debauch. Though its recipes are painstakingly written and easy to follow, most require multiple, technically exacting preparations; aside from chocolate voyeurs, they'll be of greatest interest to reasonably skilled bakers with time to spare.
Desaulniers divides his recipes into chapters such as "Baby Cakes," "Mom's Cakes," "Celebration Cakes," and "Sky-High Cakes." This portioning is somewhat arbitrary as the drill is usually a lusciously filled and topped layer cake. Delicious exceptions include My Little Kumquat Cake and Uncle Sam's in the Black Cake. If Desaulniers is given to a jokey cuteness (as evidenced by the above recipe titles), and neglects sometimes to describe his cakes so readers can make informed baking choices, he is careful to provide illuminating tips on equipment and techniques throughout. With 50 mouth-watering color photos, the book should bring great pleasure to all chocolate lovers, on the page and at meal's end. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
For the chocolate lover, there is nothing like biting into a rich, dark slice of chocolate cake. More than a mouthful of something wonderful, it's a chocolate celebration. And nobody knows how to celebrate chocolate cakes better than the "guru of ganache," chef Marcel Desaulniers.
In Death by Chocolate Cakes, Marcel serves up some of his most inventive, most sinful, most seductive chocolate creations ever. His Chocolate Heart of Darkness cakes are the ultimate cupcakes. The secret--a melted chocolate truffle center. For an unforgettable birthday cake, serve the one he created for Julia Child: a ganache-covered chocolate almond cake with red raspberry mousse.
Have the desire for something that towers over ordinary chocolate desserts? Look up Excessively Expressive Espresso Ecstasy or Chocolate Strawberry Teardrop Cake. These are exactly the things when "over the top" is what you want. And for an elegant taste of Paris, try Marcel's Chocolate Pistachio Madeleines.
When you just can't wait for that chocolate fix, Marcel has plenty of quick-and-easy recipes, some of which come from Marcel's mom's circle of chocolate-lover friends. Pour yourself a cold glass of milk and dig into Margie's Golden Raisin Heavy Fudge Cake, Virginia's Cocoa Pound Cake with Warm Buttered Brandy Berries, or Mimi Montano's Chocolate Zucchini Cake. As a bonus, there is a collection of ice creams, sauces, beverages, and other delectables that are the perfect partners to Marcel's creations and an informative section on equipment, ingredients, and techniques.
Death by Chocolate Cakes truly takes the cake and then takes it to where it's never been before.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!!!!.......2006-08-03
This is the best book on chocolate cakes. When I am entertaining I reach for this book. The directions are many but they are helpful. It is well written, funny, and the recipes are wonderful!!! The pictures are great too!!
Delicious but difficult for beginners.......2006-02-23
The recipes are outstanding, and include a large variety of desserts beyond chocolate. The book presumes that basic cake baking techniques are understood. Although not a problem for any seasoned baker, a beginner will likely make errors. Now that I have learned more (from other sources) this book will be an excellent source for phenomenal recipes. Good luck.
The most luscious cakes you'll ever taste!.......2004-05-21
Marcel Desaulniers is the most consistently amazing dessert cookbook author I've ever come across. Take, for example, Martha's Chocolate Freckles Fresh Blueberry Ice Cream Cake. It's based in a "Chocolate Freckles Cake," which is a non-chocolate cake with finely-chopped or grated chocolate mixed into the batter. A homemade blueberry ice cream fills the space between the layers - this is honestly one of the best ice creams I've ever had, with a tart flavor created by the sour cream, cream cheese, and lemon juice. The topping is sweetened, vanilla-flavored whipped cream, and further fresh blueberries are ringed around the top.
Next we made Marcel's First Birthday Chocolate High and Fluffy-on-Top Cake. This is a chocolate cake with a vanilla frosting. It sounds so simple, but it's so delightful! This is truly the ultimate icing: sweet, not too buttery, and remarkably fluffy. I have never had such a fantastic icing before, and intend to use it on cake after cake in the future.
You'll find everything in here from Chocolate Rocky Road, to Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Cake, Chocolate Caraway On-the-Rocks Trifles, Chocolate-Dipped Orange Fry Cakes with Coffee and Cream, Uncle Sam's in the Black Cake (with a toasted oatmeal raising topping), Chocolate Tender Passion, and much more! Each recipe comes with a gorgeous picture. The recipes are inventive and of consistently excellent quality; the directions are thorough without being labyrinthine. They're several pages long for each recipe, but I never feel lost. Marcel repeats the amounts of the ingredients in the instructions so you don't have to flip back and forth to the ingredient amounts.
You'll probably not want to get this book unless you have a stand mixer--the key to many of these delights is loooong mixing times, sometimes of stiff batters. Other than that, however, Marcel tries to limit himself to common household equipment and time-scales. In short, if you like to cook and love chocolate cakes, buy this cookbook!
Talk About "Have Your Cake!".......2003-12-27
You won't find such creative stuff anywhere else, trust me, one who's a cookbook addict collector and searches many sources for great recipes. Marcel is truly creative and stand alone in his relentless search and publication of such collections, all geared not for restaurant or competition but for us home chefs. Ingredients, equipment and techniques are all tried and prepared with us in mind.
This volume on cakes is divided into five groupings: Baby cakes, Mom's cakes, Celebration cakes, out-of-state cakes, and sky-high cakes, with the common theme of chocolate. This guy really knows how to get to my sweet tooth, with nuts and fruit and decadent chocolate.
Try the likes of: "Chocolate Porto Enchantment Cake"; "Milk Chocolate Peach Pecan Upside Down Cake with Peach and Bourbon Ice Cream" or "Chocolate Mai Tai." Truly, there is too many good ones, but feast your tastebuds on: "Martha's Chocolate Frecles Fresh Blueberry Ice Cream Cake" "Chocolate Caraway On-The-Rock Trifles" "Chocolate Tender Passion"
As with each of his cookbook offerings, there is the super photos, Chef's Touch section with its fascinating background and prep and serving tips, and section on sources, ingredients and techniques, one especially awesome here is a Table of differing chocolate melting times using both double broiler and microwave methods.
This one does take the cake
Amazing!.......2003-10-18
I love this book! I've already made several cakes from it and, although they are time consuming, the results are fabulous! The directions are easy to follow and the stories are the icing on the cake. I went out and got the other books as well, and I'd recommend all of them to any chocolate lover out there.

A Must Read For New & Old Gecko Owners........2005-07-29
This book has many nice gecko pictures (some not of leopard geckos)except for the brutal pictures of geckos being eaten by creepy predators like gigantic spiders and scorpians. Don't worry, the pictures are in the back (or more specifically, page 55). Because of those pictures, it's not the best book for young children that don't understand "The Circle Of Life".
Besides the pictures, it has the perfect amount of information for old and new gecko owners. The author talks to you like a best friend and each chapter is useful in some way.
1.Choosing A Leopard Gecko
2.Housing Leopard Geckos
3.Food and Water (WARNING MICE LOVERS: This has pics of baby mice being eaten by geckos. Don't worry, baby mice for food is optional.)
4.Breeding
5.Health (and how to cure the problems if they happen)
6.Other Geckos (this is where the bad pics are!)
And a glossary.
Besides the interesting pics that can break a heart and the health problems that will make you a tiny bit nervous for your gecko's health, it's a brilliant book that makes you feel like a friend of the author and a good gecko owner!!!
Handeling.......2005-02-20
The information is great minus one the, the handleing section. When i got my leopard gecko, i never read any books. I went to the pet store and talked to them. Everytime i was there i held my Emeril (thats my geckos name). OK, so yes they have sensitive tails and sharp nails, but they dont get caught in fabric that easily. I have had mine for 3 years and have held him and let him walk all over me and my bed and teh counter. and he is fine. still with his tail, and all his fingers. So please, hold your gecko and ignore tht section!
Very Helpfull!!.......2001-05-26
I've just recently perchased a leopard gecko and bought this book with high expectations! And they were fullfiled! Great book
Very informative for those who know little.......2000-11-11
I orignally purchased this book for my brother who is an avid leopard gecko fan and wanted to breed his geckos. I found it very informative from a beginners standpoint, but I thought there would be more on breeding and less on 'other types of geckos'. Either way, it was my bit of fun learning for the day!
Good News for Geckos and Their Owners.......2000-03-28
I purchased this book and the first of my three leopard geckos 18 months ago. It has served me very well with clear practical guidelines for setting up a gecko-friendly environment, providing good day to day care, identifying and dealing with health problems, breeding. The book also provides interesting background information about geckos. It is well-written and nicely designed with many attractive color photographs. Ray Hunziker appears to have the well-being of both geckos and owners in mind: He tells you that geckos don't like to be handled and suggests you handle them as little as possible. He provides a wide range of choices for the environment and the care of geckos, accommodating owners' differing esthetics and budgets.
My copy of the book went to school with a grandchild and has not returned, so I am about to purchase a second copy. One of my female geckos is laying eggs, so I need my Hunziker.
This an exceptionally useful and attractive guide.

This in-depth historical account of these fascinating collectibles includes the artistic contributions of manufacturers and designers featuring Salvador Dali and Max Factor. It explores European influences, and features early advertisements and unusual promotional techniques, including the evolution of cosmetics through celebrity endorsements and trends. Current values are conveniently included in the captions.
Customer Reviews:
an excellent, informative guide.......2001-06-21
Schwartz has written a fine book for collectors of compacts. She has written much more history of the different makers than Mueller's two books, and she has a nice selection of compacts not seen in other compact books. She also has a large amount of advertising that feature compacts she doesn't have pictures of. These ads are great resources for finding compacts that aren't easy to identify or seeing uncommon patterns and designs. If you want more text discussing the history of compacts, as well as some luscious color photos, then this book would be a welcome addition to your shelf.

On Being Black and Reformed: A New Perspective on the African-American Christian Experience
ASIN: 0195157176 |
Book Description
Born in Connecticut, Lemuel Haynes was first an indentured servant, then a soldier in the Continental Army, and, in 1785, an ordained congregational minister. Haynes's writings constitute the fullest record of a black man's religion, social thought, and opposition to slavery in the late-18th and early-19th century. Drawing on both published and rare unpublished sources, John Saillant here offers the first comprehensive study of Haynes and his thought.
Customer Reviews:
Prophetic.......2004-04-14
This book is not just for students of black history. Introduced to Lemuel Haynes by its pages, I left this book very inspired. In fact, I wanted more, and I have since sought out works by Rev. Haynes. His vision was prophetic. Rev. Haynes was a Republican in the classic sense, desiring equality for all in a democratic society. As a Calvinist, he trusted a Sovereign God's words of liberation and justice would come to fruition. Reading Haynes' words, I was struck by how far ahead of his time he was. Later anti-slavery advocates often still looked upon minorities as inferior. Many advocated freed slaves be returned to Africa. Haynes advocated equality in a manner powerfully foreshadowing a dream that would not be repeated until voiced by Martin Luther King. This book is a fascinating read for those interested in democracy, religion, philosophy, race issues, or history.
Rare Jewel Rediscovered.......2003-11-20
Without a doubt, John Saillant has done a service to American History in general and Christian History in particular. By rediscovering the depth and insight of Lemuel Haynes and dispensing this information with clarity and scholarship, Saillant has given to us one of our lost and brilliant intellectual and theological heroes. Lemuel Haynes was a post-revolutionary African-American pastor in New England. The sharpness of his mind was only matched by his zeal for the truth and its application to America at her most needful time. His words to his generation were prophetic, and through the thorough and scholarly work of Saillant, we can hear the voice of Rev. Haynes and see just how true his thought and heart were to the God he loved and the people he served. If you want to see how the passionate, theological Puritan mind addressed the issue of slavery and the true American responsibility, take up and read Black Puritan, Black Republican. You will not be disappointed - challenged and enlightened - but not disappointed.
