Summer with coffee and murder..........2007-09-15
Claire Cosi, manager of the Village Blend, is working part-time for David Mintzer to help him set up his new restaurant, Cuppa J, in E. Hampton. When not on duty, Claire and her daughter stay at Mintzer's mansion as guests. Even Madam comes to the Hamptons to help out and visit old friends. It looks to be a beautiful summer until Treat Mazzelli is shot while taking a bathroom break from beverage duties at Mintzer's mansion. Only Claire seems to think the fact that Treat was in Mintzer's bathroom and in clothing the style and color so that he could be mistaken for David is important.
Once again, Claire is on the spot to do some sleuthing to help protect a friend. As she asks questions she learns there are enough suspects to keep her busy for years. As likable as David Mintzer could be he is also a cut-throat business tycoon and employer and has made many enemies. Claire also learns she didn't know the staff as well as she thought as she uncovers drug use, skimming, and other sins. That her daughter Joy has once again appeared to make some bad decisions in dating doesn't help their relationship either.
All in all, it's a great summer mystery, filled with interesting coffee recipes.
A chance meeting with a wet suit wearing, good looking, intelligent, papparrazi puts Claire off balance. But he might just be the killer, or know who it is. There's story within story within story. This book has much more depth to the characters and the situations than previous ones in the series but it's still exciting, delicious fun, with coffee trivia, recipes, a vicarious adventure for those of us at home reading of things we'd rather not face ourselves but understanding Claire's motives and morals.
Summer at the Hamptons.......2007-08-28
Since May 2007, I've become addicted to the Coffeehouse Mystery series by Cleo Coyle. (Incidentally, "Cleo Coyle" is really the husband and wife writing team of Alice Alfonsi and Marc Cerasini. They are also "Alice Kimberly", who writes the Haunted Bookshop Mysteries.)
I savored the first book, On What Grounds, and also enjoyed Through the Grinder (although it was suprisingly sad and dark at the end). I've recently finished Latte Trouble, and just finished reading (minutes ago!) the fourth book of the series, Murder Most Frothy.
Unlike the previous three novels in this series, Murder Most Frothy takes place in the Hamptons rather than The Village Blend, the coffeehouse managed by the protagonist, Clare Cosi.
A character from Latte Trouble, David Mintzer, figures prominently in this book, but you don't have to read Latte Trouble to "get" this particular book (although it will add some richness to the reading, in my opinion).
David lives in the Hamptons and has opened up a new restaurant, Cuppa J. He's asked Clare to train his baristas in the fine art of coffee making, as well as set up dessert/coffee pairings for the menu.
At a large fete held at David's mansion, a young man is murdered by a sniper. Was the young man the intended victim--or was it actually the host, David Mintzer? Who was the mysterious frogman lurking at the beach the night of the murder? Is the bitter neighbor, Marjorie Bright, to blame...or perhaps the famous TV chef? Or could it be the housekeeper...or Jacques Papas, the manager of Cuppa J? Or what about the handsome paparazzi and ex-Navy SEAL in the boat?
Featuring a few characters from Latte Trouble (including Chef Vogel and Breanne Summour), Murder Most Frothy still has some focus on snobby rich people--but the plot is much better than Latte Trouble, in my opinion. Madame and Matteo make an appearance, but Tucker and Esther aren't seen much--but hey! they figured prominently in previous novels.
At first, I didn't think Murder Most Frothy was all that interesting (perhaps because it wasn't set at the beloved Village Blend?), but after a few chapters, I couldn't put it down! It's not my favorite book in the Coffee House Mysteries, but it was certainly worth my time and money!
The recipes in the back of Murder Most Frothy are FANTASTIC! I can't wait to try the Flourless Chocolate-Kahlua Cake, as well as the Almond Torte and Clare's Chocolate-Walnut-Espresso Brownies!
If you're a fan of the Coffee House Mysteries, you'll no doubt enjoy this book. If you're new to the series, I recommend starting with book one, On What Grounds.
And now, I'll begin reading the most recent release in this series, Decaffeinated Corpse...
A Good and Quick Read.......2007-07-13
This is the first book I read from Cleo Coyle. I use to read Mary Higgins Clark & liked it. I thought I'd give mysteries a try again and I'm glad I did. I didn't want to read too many "deep" books this summer and this book fit the bill great! Entertaining, (educational too), and easy to read.
Murder Most Froth: A Coffehouse Mystery.......2007-05-14
What a fun start of summer read. It was one of those books your just don't want to put down because you need to see how it all ends?
A fast delightful read.
murder most frothy.......2007-05-13
Too much verbage . It become boring, for me. Just give me the mystery, without all the side romances.

Book Description
A new story and a new generation grows as Diana Paxson returns to Westria, her classic fantasy realm, in the first new novel in that land in more than a decade. Prince Phoenix has always been a bit restless, never quite measuring up to the expectations of his father King Julian. Sombra, Phoenix's childhood friend, believes in him, but she has her own duties as a student of the College of the Wise. Their relationship surpasses friendship, but their responsibilities take precedence over their feelings. Then Phoenix is abducted in a raid and sold to slavers. Eduring pain and humiliation, Phoenix must find a way to survive, even if that means losing his sense of self, and becoming a danger to the people that he loves.
While King Julian searches for his lost son, a growing army of fanatics led by the charismatic Mother Mahalial is conquering land after land, and its final destination is the golden land of Westria. The only person that can sense Phoenix's plight is Sombra, and her attempt to rescue him may decide the fate of the kingdom.

Westria Returns.......2007-09-29
Diana Paxson's "Westria" stories are classic postapocalyptic fantasies. In a world transformed by the Cataclysm that ended our global civilization centuries before, Westria -- our California -- is a feudal kingdom which has embraced an earth-centered pagan religion to restore harmony with the land and its spirits.
The original series was always among my favorites. Paxson has a gift for describing landscape in a way that makes it a living presence in the story, rather than merely a backdrop, and her love of the country and its plants and animals shines through. You can feel the dust of a summer, smell the sweat of the horses, see the lights of a lonely farmhouse at night or the chill mist coming off the sea.
Her characters are also well-done; not just stuffed surcoats or jerkins, but people -- people whose beliefs and backgrounds are very different from ours, but human beings nonetheless. Their actions have consequences with which they have to live, and both villains and heroes have real motivations and real lives that you can -feel- extend before and after the story, and in the parts where they're not on stage.
The action sequences are crisp as well, and the plot is lively; not just bash-and-smash, but with the texture of real politics and lives.
THE GOLDEN HILLS OF WESTRIA is a worthy successor to the original stories; Paxson's technique has if anything improved, and it started out at a high level. The story deals mainly with the children of the original protagonists, but with them on-stage as well. And how rare and excellent it is to have that sense of generations coming and passing away in fantasy! Far too often fantasy heroes stride across a world that seems to begin and end with them; Paxson's people have families.
In THE GOLDEN HILLS we see for the first time a good deal of the world outside Westria, and a varied and colorful one it is, from the decadent city of Arena to the tribes of Aztlan and the Grass Sea. A new cult has arisen there -- and its prophetess sees Westria as her people's promised land.
I heartily recommend this book. The Westria series were among my original inspirations as a writer, and I hope this addition to the canon is just the beginning.

great epic fantasy, next generation .......2006-02-08
In Westria Prince Phoenix has doubts that he is a worthy successor to his father especially since King Julian never praises him only criticizes his efforts to be regal. On the other hand his best friend Sombra thinks Phoenix is more than worthy as she feels he will run the country with compassion and strength. However, his misgivings rise when she informs him that she will attend the College of the Wise to improve her adept abilities.
Slavers abduct Phoenix, who uses the name Johan. While his father desperately searches for him, to survive Johan becomes a gladiator fighting to the death in a traveling circus. As the Red Dragon he enables his berserker rage to turn him into a lethal killing machine. At the same time Mother Mahaliel and an army of fanatics are conquering everyone in their path as they head for Westria. The only hope for the kingdom resides in Phoenix to rise from the ashes to lead the counterattack, but he is nowhere in sight. Sombra senses where he is and begins a quest to rescue the man she loves.
One generation has past since the epic fantasy THE JEWEL OF FIRE, but the action and deep characterizations, a trademark of Diana L. Paxson remains solid. The story line is a coming of age thriller as Johan must adapt to circumstances in a mature manner or suffer the consequences, perhaps even die. Readers will wonder whether Sombra will be able to rescue him in time so that he can in turn save his people from the invaders. The return to Westria is purely golden. Every book Diana L. Paxson writes is a winner.

The Stories.....The Stories.............1998-06-28
The third and fianal decalog with the doctor in it. ...And Eternity in a hour is one of those stories that starts well but ends in a bad way. Moving On is a great story with out a doctor but it has sarah and k-9 in it but it is the last k-9 story and ends in surprise. Tarnished Image is one of the best First Doctor stories in the decalogs and it is made in the form of a newspaper articles. Past Reckoning is not a good story. UNITed We Fall is the second best story in this book , the doctor in new york is a nice idea. Aliens and Predators is very bad. Fegory is the second best Gareth Roberts short story and is very good. His Chelonians' are not as good as normal. Ccontinuity Errors is the best and greatest story in all the decalogs. Can not say it all. Timevault is a good fourth doctor story but it fails in the plot. Zeitgeist is not one of craig Hintons' best stories. Again Craig Hinton has done some thing wrong to the TARDIS and the doctor is trying to find it. All in All this is a great book.

One of my favorite cookbooks..........2007-01-15
Wonderful! Every recipe I've tried in this little cookbook---from spinach and gruyere crepes to baked German apple pancakes---has been a big winner. While this book would make an excellent gift to accompany a waffle maker (as other reviewers mention), it also goes beyond waffles. It has both sweet and savory items, and tasty recipes for dishes good any time of the day.
Waffles aren't just for breakfast anymore!.......2007-01-10
This is a GREAT little book to accompany a Belgian waffle maker as a gift. I have 3 daughters and they all were thrilled with their makers and this book for Christmas.
Waffles aren't just for breakfast anymore!
Great Gift.......2005-09-27
I purchased this book as a gift along with a wafflemaker. I think it's the perfect recipe book for a gift, since it has great pictures, creative & different recipes and is small in size.

Small pleasure.......2007-09-27
This is a very small book, about the size of a CD case. It has some nice photographs of women and horses. No text other than mostly pointless (huh?) quotes, most of which have nothing to do with women, horses or much of anything. Buy a horse calendar instead; the pictures are bigger and at least you'll know what day it is.
Horse Women: Streath, Beauty and Passion.......2007-09-23
I bought this book for my wife and daughter's and they enjoyed it very much, the way it was written and layed out.
Very happy purchaser.......2007-01-10
This book is just what I wanted to express my friendship for another woman horselover. I received my order in a very timely manner and am very satisfied with my purchase.

Pre-Raphaelite Splendor.......2000-07-18
As I only had about 30 minutes to view this exhibit at the Met (I know - it's absurd), I am delighted to have this beautiful catalog to examine in close detail. The reproductions are indeed stunning, and the text, although very detailed, is quite readable. A treasure for art lovers, especially fans of the Pre-Raphaelite style.
Here's a sumptuous feast of color and fantasy.......1998-11-26
This is a real eye opener of a book if you are looking for an in depth retrospective of the artist's body of work! Burne-Jones is at last receiving his fair due of recognition as witnessed by the recent Met show in the Summer of 1998. This book showcases his many merits, including a unerring color and design technique applied to fantastical subjects. What makes the book so irresistible is the wealth of color plates accompanied by detailed explanations. It also helps that the authors were thoughtful enough to leave out any stuffy, academic narrative that overburdens this genre.
What a great Book!!.......1998-09-23
This edition of the catalogue for the Metropolitain Museum of Art's recent(and sadly closed) exhibit belongs on every art library's list of " must buys." What a wealth of information and imagery, all presented in generous counterbalance in splendid color throughout. Buy this!!
A magnificent book for a magnificent exhibition.......1998-08-04
To visit the Burne-Jones exhibition at New York's Metropolitain Museum of Art is a thrill beyond describing. It is like being surrounded by old friends of the sort usually found in dreams. The stunning, fully illustrated catalogue that accompanies the show is perhaps the best catalogue I have seen, most notably for its impeccable and stimulating essays, and for its phenominal wealth of color reproductions. This book is a stunner, despite two or three flipped pictures( which I guess could happen to anyone in the rush to get such an involved publication ready in time!) I would advise all bookshops, libraries and Burne-Jones lovers to order this book now for its September release. It is sure to be the most valuable book on its subject for many years to come.

An excellent resource for the design team and their students.......2001-01-01
This book reads slowly and discussions tend to be dense while trying to be thorough but it is filled with very useful terms, charts, tables, diagrams, photos (B&W), and discussions of acoustic principals that all architects, engineers, and contractors are likely to encounter one day. An excellent resource for information about built acoustics for the professional, student or teacher. We highly recommend it. For further info: audioeng@europost.org

Book Description
"Thoughtful, provocative . . . a first-rate study."

"Not the least of this book's many virtues is the way in which . . . it bridges the gap between the concern's of Du Bois's day and those of the civil rights era."

Herbert Hill, Evjue-Bascom Professor of African-American Studies, University of Wisconsin
"We need this book to remind us of the competent leadership that we enjoyed in the past."
Black Issues Book Review
"This work is a welcome addition to African American studies as well as to social and cultural history..."
Choice
Activist, international statesman, reluctant black leader, scholar, icon, father and husband, Ralph Bunche is one of the most complicated and fascinating figures in the history of twentieth- century America. Bunche played a central role in shaping international relations from the 1940s through the 1960s, first as chief of the Africa section of the Office of Strategic Services and then as part of the State Department group working to establish the United Nations. After moving to the U.N. as Director of Trusteeship, he became the first black Nobel Laureate in 1950 and was subsequently named Undersecretary of the U.N.
For nearly a decade, he was the most celebrated contemporary African American both domestically and abroad. Today he is virtually forgotten.
Charles Henry's penetrating biography counters this historical tragedy, recapturing the essence of Bunche's service to America and the world. Moreover, Henry ably demonstrates how Bunche's rise and fall as a public symbol tells us as much about America as it does about Bunche. His iconic status, like that of other prominent, mainstream black figures like Colin Powell, required a constant struggle over the relative importance of his racial identity and his national identity. Henry's biography shines as both the recovered story of a classic American, and as a case study in the racial politics of public service.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and valuable.......1999-06-26
The fact that Ralph Bunche is little known on university campuses nowadays just proves that white male patriarchal systems of 'scholarship' are making it almost impossible to learn about all the great African American figures in the twentieth century. Why are we not told about him? Because we are supposed to care about conservative white males like Churchill and Teddy Roosevelt! As a feminist and a white woman, I side completely with African Americans as they try to access their glorious past, including celebrated people like Ralph Bunche, who, until now, was hardly known outside the postage stamp that featured his portrait. Not any more!
