Book Description
When the Oceanic sets sail from Englands Port of Southampton, its ultimate destination is New York. But it must make one very important stop first: at Cherbourg, in France, to pick up internationally renowned financier and art collector J.P. Morgan, fresh from a continental buying spree sure to have turned up numerous priceless objets dart. Needless to say, George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield, the ships detectives aboard the Oceanic, are slightly nervous about the presence of such an important passenger, not to mention his valuable cargo, aboard ship. For in their five years as detectives aboard the most elegant, regal sailing ships of their time, the two sleuths have never known a transatlantic voyage to pass without incident. Traveling in addition to Mr. Morgan are a recently engaged couple, a charming rake who seems set on breaking them apart as well as seducing Genevieve, a controversial painter of nudes traveling with his bohemian wife and his alluring French model, and a pair of cabin stewards who have exclusive access to the private lairs of all aboard. The latest shipboard tale from master of mystery Conrad Allen is certain to sail right into the hearts of the many fans of this delightful series.
Customer Reviews:
Okay, but lacking some of the sparkle of earlier books in series.......2006-04-26
Cruise ship detectives George Dillman and Genevieve Masefield are concerned when banker J. P. Morgan refuses to lock his valuables in the ship safe. But Morgan refuses to back down and he's brought his own security expert along to make sure his property stays safe. An outbreak of theft is only the beginning, however. And Dillman is summoned when the security expert is found murdered--and the most valuable of Morgan's treasures stolen.
Genevieve is tasked with tracking down whomever is stealing woman's jewelry--including that stolen from one woman who insists that she'll complain all the way to the Oceanic's parent company, the White Star Line. With all of the fabulous jewelry being displayed in the pre-WW-I Atlantic crossings, the thief or thieves have plenty of opportunities. And Genevive, in her guise as a single woman (she's actually married to Dillman) is an attractive target to rakes--including handome English Aristocrat Jonathan Killick. Meanwhile, Dillman has his hands filled with a sexy artist who just happens to be part of a very open marriage.
Author Conrad Allen continues his cruise ship historical mystery series with the story of the Oceanic--briefly the largest and fastest ship in the Atlantic fleet. The introduction of J. P. Morgan adds a bit of historical detail to an interesting look at how the rich lived in the late period of gilded age.
MURDER ON THE OCEANIC starts out with an introductory chapter that regular readers of the series will want to skip--with Genevive and Dillman telling each other things they both already know for the enlightenment of readers who want to catch up (always a weak tactic in writing). Things pick up once the Oceanic gets under weigh, with Dillman and Genevive investigating multiple thefts--and fending off predatory potential lovers. The ultimate resolution seemed a bit of a letdown, however, with Genevieve essentially stumbling into the clue that solved the case.
Fans of Conrad Allen's George Dillmand and Genevieve Masefield will certainly want to add this one to their to-be-read pile. Those new to the series might wish to start with one of the earlier stories, however
Fantastic ocean going historical mystery .......2006-02-25
This time ship detectives George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield work the cruise vessel the Oceanic debarking from Southampton, England, briefly stopping in Cherbourg, France before crossing the Atlantic with a final destination of New York. The two sleuths are concerned with the world's leading financier J.P. Morgan coming on board with a retinue of art, antiques, and other valuables; their trepidation is increased by learning that Mr. Morgan keeps his collectibles in his room, making it a somewhat easier prey for thieves than say locking it in the ship's vault.
George tries to plead with Mr. Morgan to better safeguard his valuables, but is unable to get close to the wealthy banker as his bodyguard allows no one near his charge unless told otherwise. A few days out to sea, someone kills the bodyguard with a slash to the throat and much of the collectibles are stolen. With Genevieve tied up investigating a rash of small thefts, George works the Morgan murder-theft by himself until an inadvertent comment by a robbery victim leads the two detectives to link their previously thought of exclusive cases together.
The latest ocean going historical mystery is a fabulous tale filled with terrific twists that will surprise the readers (and the two stars). At over thirty knots speed, the fast-paced tale moves rapidly forward along two wonderful currents (though George's is the prime investigation) until they merge into a fabulous who-done-it. Conrad Allen remains captain of the ocean cruise mystery with this refreshingly original intricate plot, new secondary characters providing plenty of color and insight into the era to include real persona from the period, and a wonderful relationship between the protagonists inside a strong investigative story line.

Butterflies have six legs. True or False?
True! Butterflies are like all other insects. They have three pairs of legs, which are attached to the body. Each leg is divided into four parts and ends in a tiny claw for gripping or holding on. All six legs are hinged to let the butterfly walk or land easily on leaves and flowers.
Butterflies have six legs but usually land on only four.

A Great Ride for the Imagination.......2004-06-15
As an adolescent I got this book from the library many times. I loved it! And now as a teacher I seek to have this book in my classroom. The imagery in the story is fantastic. The narration is extremely descriptive; you get the feeling you're there with them. While reading this book, one of my favorite elements was the relationship that develops between Tappy and Jack. I think that the problem that the reviewers had with this book is that they are not reading it through the eyes of the audience for which it is intended. I did, and loved it. I loved it enough to read it four or five times while in middle school.

Yuck........2003-08-19
I am not a prude, but I don't go for grown men sleeping with thirteen year old girls and rationalizing it to themselves. Between this book and Muse of Art I've developed a distaste for Anthony and his growing taste for stories about sex between prepubscent nymphos and adult men.
The story itself was not very exciting. It has twists and turns, but it all falls rather flat. It wanders around, and creates a story without any grip or drive.
A modest entertainment for a very narrow audience.......2001-01-12
In this inter-dimensional fantasy, Jack, a college-age art student, falls in love with, and eventually has relations with, the thirteen-year-old physically challenged girl he was supposed to deliver to a medical clinic. If that simple fact doesn't send you off book-burning right from the start, then you might find some small entertainment value in this mildly interesting story. People and things are rarely what they seem in this convoluted, but still easy to follow book, starting with the girl, Tappy. Blind,(although doctors say there's nothing wrong with her eyes), and mute, (although she talks in her sleep), and all the while wearing a leg brace, Tappy eventually takes Jack on a hike up a mountain side, walks right into a large rock, and leads him through it into another world. There they encounter a race of primitives (who nonetheless have some useful technologies), as well as some helpful androids, who explain that Tappy is actually the human host for the Imago, a sentient being that promotes empathy for all life. This makes her supremely dangerous to the Gaol, a race of brutal conquerors who rule the galaxy, and who intend to continue ruling it by imprisoning Tappy. Although there are some slow spots in the first half of the book, there are also lots of twists and surprises; but as is often the case with fantasies, the successive shocks become less and less impressive as you go along. Anthony has a good eye for description, and Farmer's sections are quickly discernable by their more scientific rationalizations, so that as a whole the book reads pretty well. Perhaps instead of asking "Who are you?" the Caterpillar should be asking "Who is your target audience?" The sexual content guarantees that this book can't be recommended to young readers, despite the fact that the authors try to assuge Jack's guilt by showing his remorse, Tappy's need, and the effect of the Imago living inside of her. On the other hand, there's little in the way of truly deep philosophical thought or sophisticated scientific speculation to lure the more experienced adult readers. So while this is not in all ways a bad book, the number of people who will really just love it is probably very small.

Canton but not Sechzuan.......2006-11-04
Very well researched,a little too sweet, not very hot. A pleasant little book that reflects the title, will be an asset to planning travel and entertaining. Wonderful recipes, an insight into the humor and creativity of the Chinese.Money well spent as a gift book.
Every review is true!!!.......2006-09-12
When I read so many five stars reviews plain of fantastic and enthusiastic words about Zee's book I have to confess I believed just a little. But I was wrong: it is a great writer!
With humour sense, with culture and incredible style. When I read people were reading it for the second time - an almost four hundred pages book!... But that is a book I know I will read again and again!
Thanks to all of you.
informative and fun.......2006-02-10
I recommend Swallowing Clouds to anyone curious about Chinese food and culture. It will have particular appeal to those learning Chinese, or curious about Chinese characters, but it is presented in such a way that those without an involvement in the language can easily follow it. Zee's approach is informative but above all fun.
Unique Book, Lovely Stories.......2004-11-02
Like to be able to speak Chinese but even the thought of studying it intimidates the pants off you? You might be pleasantly surprised once you read ten pages into Swallowing Clouds. A. Zee is a wonderfully patient, fun teacher. You won't learn Chinese simply be reading this book but you might just get hooked enough to want to learn more. So this book is a great starting point. You will learn some very interesting stuff about Chinese food and culture.
One of my favorite books of all time.......2003-09-09
I first read Swallowing Clouds 12 years ago and it started me on the endlessly fascinating hobby of learning to read Chinese characters. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Chinese culture, cuisine, and history. Dr. Zee's effortlessly entertaining, yet thoroughly knowledgeable, style will entrance the neophyte as well as the seasoned scholar.
Book Description
Study the dog from the inside-out.
Written in 1950, The Dog In Action was the first book to thoroughly analyze, illustrate and explain the under-the-skin workings of the dog. Whether looking a Pom or Pointer, McDowell Lyon showed the dog breeder, fancier and judge that the principles of movement applied to all.
The Dog In Action has inspired generations of dog breeders and judges to watch more carefully, to put aside preconceived notions of how the dog "should" work and learn from what their eyes tell them. While some of Lyon's theories have since been disproved, the book still deserves to be in the serious dog person's library because it is the foundation for all gait and locomotion books which have since been written. The modern dog breeder, judge and fancier will learn: 1. To put functional soundness above everything else. 2. Why the trot shows the faults and virtues of a dog's running gear. 3. That every animal that moves can teach us about functional conformation. 4. Why a dog must be dynamically balanced to function efficiently. 5. That no dog can be any better than his bone placement, conformation and muscle tone. 6. How to develop a thorough knowledge of dogs in order to interpret a breed standard.
Customer Reviews:
Dog Massage.......2007-05-28
Very informative and easy to read. The author uses 'every day' examples that make understanding muscle movement easy.
Not Required Reading.......2003-10-15
This is a difficult book to get through. The author tries to compensate for that fact by starting out with some "stories" of his own, but it can't make up for the difficult reading ahead of you. You're going to need a dictionary to read this and don't read it when you're bored, you'll fall asleep!
The structure information is good, it's just not an easy read.
The Dog in Action By McDowell Lyon.......2002-08-31
This book is like a bible for those that study the mechanics of animals as they move, especially dogs. It details the coordination of every bone with the corresponding limb as the dog moves and then ties it all together with images of how the whole dog should move as a unit. It justifies every aspect, supporting the information with examples of the survivors in nature. For anyone aspiring to judge dogs or already judging or breeding it is a must. Although written over fifty years ago, the information is still relevent and stands up to recent high tech studies done with slow motion and stop action cameras. The book is presented in a way that makes it easy to understand the mechanics of the dog as it moves, the importance of efficiency, which is such an important part of assessing the value of one dog as compared to another. After reading this book, watching dog shows will become more meaningful, whether one has been breeding and judging for years or is just getting started. Years ago I lent out my copy and never got it back so will order a copy in paperback.

Great book.......2001-04-06
I first saw this book when my friend brought over a library copy. I didn't have time to read it, but I read the chapter on single tracking.
Let me explain. I'm an engineer. And conformation vs. performance as always been a hobby of mine. Mostly for horses. I always wondered why horses single track. Now I know. Based on that chapter I scoured the used book market until I found my own copy. I found this book to be thought provoking and credible. I bought a copy for a friend of mine who is a professor at one of our state universities and who heads up the collage's judging team (horses again).
I found that by studying dogs, whose conformation could be much more diverse than horses, I could better understand how more subtle conformation differences affect the horse. I will never give up my copy. They will have to pry it from my cold dead fingers.
Customer Reviews:
I'm not sure this book is as useful as the reviews I read claim........2007-01-21
I suppose as a very general overview it might be useful. Third Reich Militaria is a very vast field. A detailed handbook would probably be more like the Oxford English Dictionary than a 'handbook.' Still, much of the information about values seems somewhat outdated based on my research. I guess overall it's not a bad book, just FAR too small to be very useful to a collecter. You will definately need other material to supplement this book, no question.
Wonderful book for the serious German collector........2002-01-29
An absolutely essential book for collector of Third Reich militaria, and the fakes that abound from the internet auction houses. Don't waste your money on out of date publications, this is the one to own.
A good book for the novice.......2002-01-15
This book is a great introduction to the great hobby of collecting German Militaria. It discusses a wide variety of items giving brief insight on each. It even goes into some detail on reproduction items and how to spot them. Once you decide what area you want to specialize in there are many books out there. But take it from me, this is the one to start you off.
A great general reference. If you only want one, THIS IS IT!.......1997-10-03
Although its getting a bit dated(for pricing, I only wish we could by at these prices) Lumsden is truly an expert, he includes alot of good info on ferreting out fakes. An overall great reference, its small size makes it great for taking along to shows & flea markets, etc.
Customer Reviews:
SAVE YOUR MONEY.......2002-07-09
This book is so out of date it isn't even funny. Save your money and buy a real book on German collecting from a reputiable writer. This book is a complete waste of time and money.
The out of date part is right........2002-02-22
Concise is being generous. Skip this book, Whitmans are the ones to buy.
A concise, but now outdated price guide.......2001-04-26
Published by the reknowned Manions' Auction Company, this small book is a concise price guide to german militeria. Included in the price guide is almost everything: books, helmets, medals, badges, uniforms, photos, identification books, posters etc.. Heavily illustrated with small photographs and concisely described, the items number in the thousands. Sadly, however, the prices listed are now almost seven years out of date. It is now rare for example, to find an original Second World War, Iron Cross First Class for only $85.00. A good supplemental reference work and a useful "floor" price reference, this book provides a good representation of items usually offered for sale on the open market. This book however,is by no means comprehensive. It should never be used to completely authenticate an item.
Customer Reviews:
Detecting the fakes........2007-06-09
Great tool for collectors. After the book I found out I had at least one fake. Great help when look for other pieces for the collection. Pictures and diagrams and explations what to look for is a must.
An excellent starting point.......2001-06-06
Since there is no other book on the market which provides such essential basics to becoming a knowledgeable collector I rate this book very high. If you intend on getting into the fun of collecting Nazi era memorabilia this is the first book you should get your hands on. Don't buy anything until you read this book. Chances are if you take this book with you when your looking for Third Reich Militaria you will at least end up with an original and not a fake. Without this book it's buyer beware.
Not perfect but:.......2001-04-29
If you are going to collect 3rd Reich militaria this book is a must. The biggest drawback is the lack of short glossary explaining some of the terms and how to determine certain kinds of metal. For example: if an item is made out of "tombak" how do I differentiate that from zinc or aluminium. All photos in B&W, color would have been nice. All this aside this book seems to be the best book on the market on the subject.
Informative and Concise.......2000-08-02
This book is a very helpful guide for helping to separate the fake items from the real ones out there. The hundreds of pictures included in the book wonderfully illustrate the points made in the text. The "Miscellaneous Regalia" section could have been larger and more inclusive but what is included gives good examples of how far people will go to forge items, especially written documents. The book should be very helpful to anyone who purchases it and will be indespensible for the beginning collector.
Customer Reviews:
A Joyous Lifelong Enterprise.......2006-12-10
As a collector of various military items including firearms and uniforms, I have recognized that many purveyors of cloth issues often rely on their visual appreciation of the object alone. This causes unfortunate and sometimes expensive errors in judgement.
In his offering, Mr Wilkens has provided a 416 page text, replete with precise illustrations of various cloth caps, wherein he exhibits not only the standard configuration, insignia and lining asssociated with a particular headgear, but also reveals the type of cloth and the general technique used to sew and dye its basic material components.
Acknowledging that most of we enthusiasts hope for the best when purchasing additions to our collections (sufficiently re-assuring ourselves by singular similarities to some photograph we have seen), this book insists that tactile appreciation is critical in enhancing our judgement. Mr. Wilken's advises that such knowledge may be obtained only by making the effort to actually interact (in person) with others in the field who's qualifications are revered by the community of collectors.
However, the path to viable discussion is paved by Mr. Wilken's book, allowing we fledgelings to contribute to the colloquium. In the real world, such interloqutions may expand our knowledge, while disuading a malefactor from tempting us to take a second mortgage in order to purchase a heinous mistake.
Concurrantly, the author provides extensive information regarding the manufacturers of various caps, much in the same way one would confirm the veracity of information on a handgun. The specifics of internal markings, identifying a particular company (seen beneath the sweatband and on the liners) may provide the final confirmation that an item is worthy of consideration.
However, at no time does the author claim to have superceded the need for additional education, which should be garnered by direct experience. In fact, it is his love of the subject (and your own) that should bring the two of you together in the first place. In any event, during such a venture it is the journey that must count. To that end, Mr. Wilkens does not intend to take you to your final destination, but rather provides the most exquisite vehicle by which to travel. I for one am most grateful for the ride.
A MUST BOOK FOR COLLECTORS ON GERMAN WW2 CAPS.......2005-06-29
I HAVE BEEN A COLLECTOR FOR SOME TIME AND HAVE SEVERAL BOOKS ON GERMAN WW2 CLOTH CAPS..SINCE I PURCHASED COLLECTORS GUIDE TO CLOTH OF THE 3RD REICH I HAVE NEVER HAD TO USE ANY OF MY OTHER REFRENCE BOOKS ON THIS SUBJECT. FROM THE DETAIL OF PICTURES IN WONDERFUL SHARP COLOR TO THE EXACT DISCRIPTION OF EACH ITEM. THIS BOOK IS EASY TO READ FOR THE NOVICE OR EXPERIENCED COLLECTOR. I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH GOOD FOR MR. Excellent work.......2005-03-23
Anyone interested in 3rd Reich headgear, this book is a "must have".It is well researched and laid out.

Book Description
This first volume of a series of anthologies, each based on a symposium held in Los Angeles by a consortium of the art schools of Southern California, brings out some heavy hitters for its inaugural number. A cross-disciplinary endeavor, the contributors include Mike Davis, author of City of Quartz and winner of a MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant; novelist Dennis Cooper ("the most important transgressive literary artist since William S. Burroughs," according to Salon); artist Diana Thater; artist and ambient DJ Dave Muller; and Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles Curator Connie Butler. This publication presents an essential assessment of the vital and influential art scene in Southern California since 1990. Contemplating the sociopolitical context, the available cultural tools, and the importance of certain Californian artists both on an aesthetic level and as teachers, the book offers perspectives on the singular Southern California art scene.

Book Description
The postborder metropolis of Bajalta California stretches from Los Angeles in the north to Tijuana and Mexicali in the south. Immigrants from all over the globe flock to Southern California, while corporations are drawn to the low wage industry of the Mexican border towns, echoing developments in other rapid growth areas such as Phoenix, El Paso, and San Antonio. This incredibly diverse, transnational megacity is giving birth to new cultural and artistic forms as it rapidly evolves into something unique in the world. Postborder City is a genuinely interdisciplinary investigation of the hybrid culture on both sides of the increasingly fluid U. S.-Mexico border, spanning the disciplines of art and art history, urban planning, geography, Latina/o studies, and American studies.

And after the passage of five years..........2004-09-05
When Mark Johnstone's CONTEMPORARY ART IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA was first published in 1999, it was supposed to be a survey of the greats and the might-be greats in Southern California Artists. One of the reasons the book didn't enjoy wide popularity is because of the artists chosen to include, but more important the obvious giants that were excluded and not even mentioned. Five years later some of the 'greats' have faded into near obscurity and many of the might-be greats cannot be found in galleries or museums. But that is part of Johnstone's initial premise: great art does indeed exist outside New York City (especially in the culturally vital Los Angeles) and yet taste and trends are acceleratingly transient in this overmedia-ized part of the country. It would be a welcome addition to the current art book library to take another look at art in Southern California, this time including some of the giants in representational art excluded from this book. Johnstone seems to emphasize the artists on the edge rather than the well-schooled craftsmen who continue to challenge the mind and eye with a foot remaining on the academic ground. History, even if it is only five years worth, continues to teach us valuable lessons. And so does art!
Fantastic overview of serious, contemporary art.......1999-09-03
This is a excellent guide to what is often NOT written about in east coast periodicals. Filled with beautiful reproductions of current work. The writing is a bit uneven, but is generally very readable and not filled with art jargon. A very good overview for anyone who goes to galleries and/or is interested in any form of contemporary art.
