J.A. Jance's Joanna Brady series whisks us off to a small town in the desert terrain of the Southwest. When Joanna's newly elected husband is killed while serving as sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona, Joanna steps into his position. We watch her grow into the job in Jance's series: she has to cope with the problems of juggling family and personal life while solving crimes. At the same time, we've learned about the benefits and shortcomings of daily life in a desert--how beautiful and dangerous the landscape can be in all seasons.
Jance's seventh book, Outlaw Mountain, begins with the death of an old woman who was injured when she fell on a poisonous cholla cactus. But it isn't the plant that finishes off Alice Rogers; the lively, free-spirited widow is murdered by someone who injects her as she lies writhing in pain. Now Joanna has to find out whether anyone in Alice's large family would have killed her for her land and money. Was it her son Cletus, "a restaurateur with the diplomacy of a mountain goat," who was recently elected mayor of the legendary Arizona town of Tombstone (where Wyatt Earp once reigned)? Or did the murder have something to do with a local political power struggle? As she has done so well before, Jance balances scenes full of action and excitement with more intimate moments. --Dick Adler
Book Description
Alice Rogers, an elderly widow, is dead, found murdered in the Arizona desert. It's easy enough to pin the killing on the teens caught driving her car across the Mexican border, but Sheriff Brady isn't about to let it go at that. Alice was something of a free spirit, with a penchant for Scotch, the glitter of Las Vegas, and a romance with a man twenty years her junior. Her hot–tempered daughter Susan suspects Mom's boyfriend –– her former handyman who moved in instead of moving on when he finished his handy work. Now Susan's furious at her brother Clete, the do–nothing mayor of Tombstone, blaming him for not protecting their inheritance by breaking up their mother's winter romance.
Yet all is not as it appears to be, and Joanna is forced to put her personal life on hold to dig deeper into Alice's death, the lives of her greedy offspring, and the identity of her mysterious gentleman friend. And as the investigation gets sidetracked by ugly local land disputes, it takes some troublesome twists and turns, until Sheriff Brady finds herself wading through a murky morass of graft and corruption that may have given someone reason to kill –– and kill again.
"Joanna Brady is a delightful character."
–– Chicago Tribune
"J.A. Jance is among the best––if not the best––mystery novelists writing today."
–– Chattanooga Times
"Jance is one of those authors who makes readers feel as ifthey lived all their lives in the setting of which she writes."
–– Cleveland Plain Dealer
Customer Reviews:
Could Not Put It Down.......2007-03-29
Filled with suspense and twists and turns. I also enjoy the way in which Jance brings in the personal day to day life of the Brady and her family. Just enough soap opera without going over the edge.
awful.......2006-07-21
J.A. Jance's novel, Outlaw Mountain, is one of the worst books i have read in years. Her characters and their dialogue, both inward and spoken, are completely unbelievable. The storyline is convoluted and riddled with useless drama which is completely unnecessary for the plot. The fact that I was able to finish this book was an act of pure discipline. I am a worse person just for having consumed this book. I would advise anyone who is considering purchasing or reading this book to save their time and money.
Death by Cholla? Painful!!.......2005-04-04
Outlaw Mountain continues the story of Joanna Brady, sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona. I have to admit that I've read all seven books in this series and it continues to be one of my favorites. The characters are well developed, plots are well thought out, and the books are just plain fun and exciting. Another plus, at least for me, is that the main character of Joanna Brady is not perfect - she's a struggling, working mother who goes through so much that is familiar territory for the rest of us, it makes her character very believable and identifiable.
As always in this series, we are once again taken to Bisbee, Arizona in Cochise County. For those that are unfamiliar with the Arizona region, Bisbee is an old mining town that's within driving distance to Tucson. The background and details given on this small town, from the surrounding landscape down to details about the Copper Queen Hotel has made it intriguing to the point that I want to vacation there - I have to see this area first hand! The fact that J.A. Jance can encourage this type of "want" is testimony to her fantastic ability as a writer.
Jance captures the reading audience from the very beginning with the murder of an elderly woman in a gruesome manner. Now don't get me wrong, most murders are gruesome, but the details that Jance uses make it so - the details aren't gory or bloody, but they do leave a lasting impression on the reader. This is a perfect example - before Alice Rogers is killed, she is chased into a grove of Cholla cactus and pushed into them. These cacti have long needles that are very painful when they come into contact with humans, this I know from personal experience - my hand felt like it was on fire for hours. This is the gruesome detail that I mentioned previously.
Joanna Brady now must not only find out who killed Alice, but also why this person wanted her to suffer so horribly. This investigation leads us through many interesting developments with new characters and old alike. The subplots are interwoven into the main story line with such precision that at times you don't realize it's not part of the big picture. We see the relationship between Butch and Joanna take on new meaning, we see more into the relationship between Joanna and her mother, we even see more into Dick Voland - a chief deputy working under Joanna.
The killer didn't come as a surprise to me (maybe I read far too many mysteries to be fooled anymore), even the illness reeking havoc with Marianne Mulcayea (Joanna's long time friend and local minister) was not an unknown idea to me. Even so, there was never a dull moment while reading Outlaw Mountain. In fact, I haven't found one book in this series that I haven't absolutely loved and I encourage everyone to read them! I do suggest that you begin with Desert Heat, the first in the set and continue in order. It's not mandatory to understand each new book, but it will help you to feel as if you're part of the story and somehow fit in with Joanna Brady and her group of friends and family.
Now for the negative - yes, I actually found a negative with this book! It's a first: J.A. Jance actually made a mistake in this one. She referred to Arizona Game and Fish as Arizona Fish and Wildlife. Ok, so it's not a huge mistake, and I am nitpicking, but it is an error. I haven't ever found a blunder in any of her books - either major or insignificant - until now. It was almost like getting two surprises in a box of Cracker Jacks - it didn't change the flavor, I just knew it wasn't right. If this is the only inaccuracy made by Jance in this series, you can see why this type of research combined with incredible plots, strong characters and great development are what makes these books hit the bestseller list every time!
Lots of intertwined plot, but few thrills.......2001-11-24
This is an unusual mystery. It starts off with an interesting murder, then drags on for a long time. Meanwhile, we slug along through seemingly unconnected events, until finally things begin to focus. I wanted it all to build to a great climax, but it best scene (Joanna vs. the killer) occurred too early, leaving Ms Jance a few more chapters to tie up the other loose ends, such as the missing husband and Junior. There was a lot of good story within this book. Perhaps if it was packaged better, it could be a solid 4 or 5 star mystery, but it has a bit too much soap opera within it. Like all Brady books, it was a pleasant and fast read, however. After reading several of them, though, I still can't figure out the source of antagonism between Joanna and Eleanor.
One of the worst novels I have finished this year.......2001-10-26
Maybe it is me but this novel was about as exciting as watching the grass grow. It is the first mystery novel that I have read by a female author and I hope that it is not representative of the gender. But, by the reviews here, all by women, I can see that Jance writes to that crowd. Her readers seem to like being taken down the aimless boring pass of relationship drible. If you want to spend 10 pages with the main character sitting and talking about nothing in her mothers house or on her friends porch talking about their health than this book is for you. It is amazing that Jance can start great with the murder scene and then 200 pages later start uncovering her first clue, the insulin bottle. Jance gives no indication that Oak Vista or the stranded stranger are even remotely related to the story. Do not start this book it is absolutely a total waste of time. If you want a good mystery read Coben, Crais, Patterson or Michael Connely.

Book Description
udith Tarr's sweeping chronicle of the world of Avaryan has won rave reviews and a legion of devoted fans. The first three of the six volumes of the series were published in omnibus form in 1997, to tremendous success. Now Tor is delighted to offer Arrows of the Sun, The Spear of Heaven, and the newest installment, The Tides of Darkness, in a beautiful new omnibus edition, Avaryan Resplendent. The descendents of the Sunborn rule both ancient empires of Avaryan-Endros and Asanion-by blood and conquest. They are strong mages, but the power of the Kasar, sign of their descent from the Sun God himself, gives them magical strength beyond any others. The Emperor Estarion and his children are the protagonists of these three novels, which explore Tarr's fascinating world, and the romance and intrigue that is unique to an empire ruled by magic.

Hard to describe.......2002-11-03
Vance's writing is ornate and in some ways archaic; his characters, although ostensibly human, are oftentimes incomprehensible, yet for all that, this novel (really a series of interconnected short stories) is still very appealing. Set who-knows-when (or, for that matter, who-knows-where, even though it's supposed to be Earth), this book is populated with scamps and thieves, cannibalistic deodands and murderous erbs, bizarre religious cults, ghosts and magicians. If you like this one, make sure you also pick up "The Eyes of the Overworld." Both aren't really science fiction, but fantasy, of a kind that only Vance has been able to produce.
The most believable, best work written in the fantasy genre.......2000-01-10
As a true fan of good fantasy and science fiction for some 20 years now, I've always searched for books which really fulfull the promise of those genres. In a time when both genres seem to have collapsed into a state where one rarely finds work which isn't some sort of commercial advertisement for childrens toys and tv shows, Jack Vance stands out like a beacon of pure genius. The dying earth is a series of vignettes in the fantasy realm of the same name invented by Vance. Humorous and brilliantly witty, yet darker and in many ways more believable (on a human level) than his space operas, the dying earth presents characters and situations using Vance's unique and eclectic mastery of the english language which sweep the reader away into another world from which it is hard to escape. This, ultimately is what good fantasy should do, and so often fails to accomplish. Readers should also seek out "The eyes of the overworld", "Cugels saga", and "Rhialto the marvelous", which occur in the same 'world'...
Vance got even better.......1999-11-26
I am a great fan of Jack Vance, but this is not one of my favourite works. I find the characters opaque and unlikeable. Vance's verbal pyrotechnics remain spectacular, of course. But I far prefer later Vance such as the 'Lyonnesse' series, the 'Cadwall Chronicles' ('Araminta Station' et seq.), and the 'Alastor' novels. These contain heroes who are likeable as well as dauntless, and romantic interests who are loveable as well as beautiful. For people who like 'The Dying Earth', I suggest 'Cugel's Saga', 'Eyes of the Overworld', 'Rhialto the Marvellous', and 'Showboat World'. People who find the characters of 'The Dying Earth' repellent, or the language over-elaborate, should try 'Araminta Station' (SF) or 'Lyonnesse I: Suldrun's Garden' (Fantasy) before they give up on Vance.
exellent,a one book,one sit read........1999-03-02
this is a book of science fiction and fantasy combined.in book one of this four book sieres we,re introduced to a variety of people.turjan, creator of life.t,sais, who see's everything with evil intent.on her planet she meets her sister who sees everything with the goodness of her soul.here her sister travles to a planet called earth where the sky is blue to find love.here t,sais meets a hooded man who saves her from distruction his name is etarr(I liked him)his is a story of love for the wrong woman! there are manny other characters in this book to many for me to give a proper feel for each one. mazirian, liane, ulan dhor... JACK VANCE IS A MASTER STORRYTELLER...
A true classic, beautiful beyond belief........1998-09-17
Any attempt to convey even a vague sense of the wonder and beauty of Jack Vance's writing in this book is doomed to failure. It takes its place alongside the works of Lord Dunsany (The King of Elf Land's Daughter), E.R. Eddison (The Worm Ourobouros), and, yes, Tolkien. Read and be enchanted.

Customer Reviews:
I'm hungry just writing this review..........2007-03-08
First of all, I'm amused by the bizarrely aggressive reviewer above. Umm, it's grilled cheese - relax.
Trust me, this book oozes with great content. The recipes include the relatively simple- putting together a special grilled cheese with one of the many well-thought out selections of breads, cheeses, seasonings and accompaniments (like chutney, spicy greens or pickles). Even the simple ones are not combos that I would have thought of, like the tasty Panini Inglese, built from classically English treats like Stilton, watercress, and roast beef.
The book also includes some recipes that are a bit more involved, like the Hot Muffaletta or the Sage, Sausage and Jack Cheese Sandwich with preserved lemons. It's a wonderful exploration of grilled cheese, and I think you will be impressed. I'm certainly enjoying it.
A Very Cheesy Cookbook.......2006-11-22
Who doesn't love a warm, comforting grilled cheese sammich when the weather gets cold? Some good bread, a few slices of cheddar, butter, and a big crunchy pickle is heaven to me! Throw in a side of tomato soup and we got a winning combination!
I always thought I was creative when I took spinach, pears, and brie and made a very classy little grilled cheese pressed between some heavy skillets. However, Marlena Spieler - a long time writer for Bon Appetit and author of many cookbooks - has brought grilled cheese to a new level. Her book Grilled Cheese: 50 Recipes to Make You Melt is just the thing to bring a creative comfort to your kitchen during the cold season.
The book starts out with a comprehensive review and introduction. She begins by covering various types of cheeses (blue viened, soft, cow, goat, semi-hard, spiced, bloomy rind, smoked and so on in extremely specifc subcategories) and how each can be perfectly utilized and paired for your own creative uses. All are accompanied by a short description describing their general flavors and properties. Since one may not be able to eat a whole wedge of cheese, Spieler also considers the proper storage and handling of cheeses. To further aide the grilled cheese selection process, a section covering breads, meats, fuits, chutneys and so on are all covered so that your experience with her recipes and your own home concoctions! At the back is even a resource guide on where to find good cheese stores or markets, and suggestions on finding local cheeses.
But how do the recipes stand up? Perfectly. Rob and I have already found a few favorites, ensuring that we now keep a few select cheeses on hand, and nudging us to always experiment with a new piece of stinky goodness. Rob's current favorite is the Mediterranean Meltdown; tomatoes, Mahon cheese, and fresh thyme on olive bread. We threw in some sauteed red onions as well for a truly filling and rustic sammich!
I've become partial to the fresh mozarella, fig jam, and prosciutto for it's sweet and salty sensations. The raddicchio, Roquefort and toasted pecans on pain au levain is another delectible tid-bit that goes well next to a blazing heater or roaring fire place.
Breaking out the heavy skillet is definetly part of the charm, but don't think that some of these don't mix it up. Classics such as the tuna melt are revamped. Recipes calling for home made chili aioli, and fruity chutneys make for a flavorful and fun experience and a perfect excuse to visit local farmer's markets. Desserts, salads, and a classic accompaniments also adorn the book, and well as a small section for a few homemade mustards to keep things spicy!
The book is filled to the brim with gorgeous photos any photographer would envy. Sheri Giblin, a local San Francisco food photographer, has done an excellent job bring each and every recipe to life. Luckilly with grilled cheese being such a simple fare, many times yours will look much like the photo. Mine have to my total surprise.
[...] I highly suggest you go order a bargain book copy. Mine has one or two stickers on it, but really, who cares? The book has tons of great ideas, and will fill you with inspiration for simple meals, and fun lunches with friends.
Overall, the book is shibby, affordable, and truly cheesy.
Great Mac and Cheese.......2006-03-23
I am of the opinion that if you get one good receipe, that is worth repeating, out of a cook book you got your money's worth. This cook book is much better than that. The concept of using multiple cheeses when making macaroni and cheese was revelatory! Macaroni and cheese is the ultimate comfort food and this book takes that to a new level.
You've got to be kidding me.......2006-03-13
Folks - let me tell you that I cook, that I own many cookbooks, and I really LOVE talking about cooking. I might not be the best, but I truly enjoy spending time in the kitchen.
With that said, I would like to share an ACTUAL 'recipe' from this soon-to-be-dollar-bin book: Quality white bread, cheddar cheese, and a dill pickle. That's a RECIPE. Wow! I hope I haven't given away too much...
...cooking is about experimentation and having fun, right? hey - if you need a book to tell you how to make GRILLED CHEESE SANWICHES then you probably need a book about how to make the ultimate glass of icewater... $16 for a book you could figure out on your own a thousand times over? Hoo-boy - I guess desktop publishing has come a REALLLLY long way....
Mouthwateringly Good.......2004-08-25
Marlena Spieler's new book is just fabulous. Not just the recipes but the mouthwatering photography by Sheri Giblin. In addition to the grilled cheese recipes, there's a detailed discussion of which cheeses and breads to use, and an accompaniments section with recipes for homemade tomato soup and zucchini pickles, as well as a salad summary.
I know what I'm having for lunch, grilled American cheese on white bread with tomato soup. Although, that may disappoint the author, as she says, "American cheese is probably the most famous processed cheese. Don't expect to find it in this book. Why choose processed cheese when there are so many fabulous cheeses to choose from?" (p. 17) Well, first off, I'm in a reminiscent mood. Second, I have the ingredients in the house. But I promise, next time I hit my local cheese shop, I'll have to get some Telleggio and make the "Austin Powers' Shag-a-delic 1970s Grilled Ham, Cheese and Pineapple" or some Gruyere for a classic "Croque Monsieur."

One of the most photogenic, gentle, and lovable of all dogs, the basset can also be stubborn and independent, which means that it usually requires firm obedience training. This book describes the basset's origins and characteristics in detail, and offers expert advice on purchasing, training, feeding, grooming, and health maintenance.

Lots of valuable information in the manual that has helped me understand my Basset Hound. Worth having.
Not What I Expected............2003-03-09
This book was not at all what I expected! I thought it was written by a lover and owner of basset hounds?? It seems as if this guy thinks basset hounds are pains!!! Not to mention the type of dog he describes is nothing like my dog! My dog is very playfull, not calm or sluggish at all! He talks about Basset Hounds like they are the most fragile dogs in the world! This book was not as good as I thought it would be.
brian.......2001-11-11
This book is excellent for the first time Bassett owner. I found it helpful in raising my own Bassett Hounds and giving advice to friends and family that had decided to get a Bassett of their own. The only drawback is it could offer a little more detail that is specific to Bassett Hounds and not just dogs in general. All in all, it was very helpful in understanding some of the unique traits of Bassett Hounds.
great book about bassets.......1997-12-04
This was a very good book for me as I am looking for a basset hound puppy. It is very informative and to the point.

They're so low, it's harder to look `em in the eyes!.......2004-06-19
After almost 30 years of Saints (Bernards,) I'm getting a Basset! What I wanted Ms. Walton to teach me was, what is different about this breed from others? What, specifically, makes a family basset happy & healthy? What I got was a dry lot of high falutin' blood lines and family trees (like all those Biblical 'begats,') home-made kibble recipes (June Cleaver and Martha Stewart are unavailable and I haven't the time - I'd rather play with my puppy!) and Dog Show preparation.
Stay tuned for more news of me & my baby basset, Lucy Inda Sky. /TundraVision
This is THE definitive book on bassets.......2004-05-28
Margaret Walton is known in basset circles as the "mother" of the basset hound in America since she, along with Ann German were responsible for being the foundation of the wonderful bassets we have today. Mrs. Walton is the founder of the renowned "LynMar" bloodline and is still an active AKC judge. Her LynMar line is the basis for some of the top active bloodlines in the world. In short, she KNOWS what she's talking about!
HAVE BASSET HOUND, WILL TRAVEL.......2002-03-24
Basset hound owners and afficionados will certainly appreciate this book. It is a good resource tool for the care, breeding and general ownership of a basset hound. These long eared, lovable dogs are certainly appealing and the photographs of these hounds will bring smiles to many faces.
This book will appeal to all, from the serious breeder to the pet lover who shares a home with such a lovable hound. The basset hound has certainly had a long standing place in advertising -- in the 1960s a basset hound puppy helped sell Hush Puppy shoes; in the 1990s the Maytag repairman was accompanied by a basset hound. A local furniture store in my area has a female basset hound named Isadora Duncan ("Izzy") hop onto a sofa to prove how soft it is (the couch, not the hound). Basset hounds are lovable and appealing.
(there is only one "t" in "basset").

I'm very satisfacted with this book. Where ever i go i take it with me. The book is everything a breeder or a regular owner of basset hound needs to know about general care, nutrition and training.

To learn what the bassett hound is, they are good with children. You will lean a lot of information in this book. The reason on writing this book is there is not any book specific book on bassett hounds. I had to do a lot of research for this book.

Quick Gifts and Decor.......2000-01-25
How-to gift books are famous for featuring recycled projects (you know, the ones you've seen over and over, but in a different fabric or color). No so for Quick Gifts and Decor. These famous authors and television celebrities aren't resting on their laurels...the projects are really unique, easy and truly elegant. (Sort of Martha Stewart simplified for the rest of us short on time and exotic materials.) My favorites were the Festive Packages (fabric gift wrap), the Starburst Table Scarf (made from napkins) and the Hanging Hamper (for diapers, towels, or laundry). Well worth the price...complete with all cutting directions, grids and patterns included.

With the possible exceptions of Dr. Alain Locke and W.E.B. Du Bois, no African American excelled on as many different levels as James Weldon Johnson. Along This Way--the first autobiography by a person of color to be reviewed in The New York Times--not only chronicles his life as an educator, lawyer, diplomat, newspaper editor, lyricist, poet, essayist, and political activist but also outlines the trials and triumphs of African Americans from post-Reconstruction to the rise and fall of the Harlem Renaissance. Born in Florida in 1871 to middle-class West Indian parents, Johnson recognized the challenges and absurdities of segregated America early on. But it was his experience as a tutor to rural blacks while a student at Atlanta University that was to alter the course of his life: "It was this period that marked the beginning of psychological change from boyhood to manhood," he writes. "It was this period that marked also the beginning of my knowledge of my own people as a race."
With a rare blend of pride and humility, Johnson recounts how he, among other accomplishments, became Florida's first black lawyer in 1898, a diplomat in Venezuela and Nicaragua, and lyricist for his brother Rosamond Johnson's famous song, "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Johnson's commentary on his epochal novel, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, as well as writings on his works of poetry--The Creation, God's Trombones, and Fifty Years and Other Poems--is priceless. Equally important are the logical and even-tempered opinions on race that he wrote for The New York Age, which offered comprehensive critiques of Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, and Marcus Garvey, along with his analysis of the racial climate while serving as head of the NAACP. This remarkable man left a mark on the 20th century that goes beyond the boundary of race. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
The extraordinary life story of the famed black writer, poet, and Harlem activist, told in his own words
Here is, to quote the eminent historian Nathan Irvin Huggins, "one of the finest American autobiographies written in this century." Born in 1871 in Jacksonville, Florida, James Weldon Johnson began his career as a high school principal. He went on to attain success as a songwriter on Broadway and as the compiler of the definitive Book of American Negro Spirituals. But he achieved one of his greatest triumphs in 1912, when, under a pseudonym, he published The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man-a classic novel about a musician who rejects his black roots, a novel that is still in print today in no fewer than five paperback editions. Johnson was, from 1920 to 1930, the first African American head of the NAACP, fighting tirelessly for the passage of a federal anti-lynching law. His life story is that of a truly remarkable man who triumphed over a system of institutionalized racism to become one of black America's leading educators, men of letters, and reformers.
"It is difficult to imagine the Harlem Renaissance without James Weldon Johnson. It is impossible to understand the place of African Americans in the life of this country without Along This Way." (John Hope Franklin)

Shamefully Neglected Classic.......2006-10-21
One of the superb American autobiographies, and one of the great autobiographies of any period. After reading an example of this calibre it does not surprise me that I am rarely able to read biographies... second hand views, with some exceptions (Philip Horton's biography of Hart Crane, Frank Harris' of Oscar Wilde) are simply not sufficient....those exceptions being almost invariably written by men or women contemporaries who lived and loved in the same circle as their subject.
James Weldon Johnson was a great American, not just a great African American, and a master stylist. This book is a pleasure to read both for its countless wonderful episodes and for the inspiring way of its prosody. He is one of those writers who makes you feel that his wonderful style is an organic product of a graceful upbringing, it is classic and yet unmannered...or rather the manner, being the grace, is the man, all inseparable. There is an additional poignancy in the narrative, especially in the childhood portion, deriving from our knowledge that the nobility of his home education is a thing entirely vanished from the American scene. He went to school, but was also in every sense home schooled. See the autobiography of Kenneth Rexroth for a similar example..."The years as they pass keep revealing how the impressions made upon me as a child by my parents are constantly strengthening controls over my forms of habit, behavior, and conduct as a man." (Along the Way, p. 19, Penguin ed.)
This is certainly one of the best examples of Childhood Autobiography in the World Literature of any age. It should at the very least be required reading in AP English for Black History Month. The very highest endorsement.
Johnson's "Along this Way" .......2005-03-18
James Weldon Johnson (1871 -1938) was the closest American approximation possible to a Renaissance man. He is best-known for writing the lyrics to "Lift Every Voice and Sing", considered the "African-American National Anthem." He was a poet, the author of "God's Trombones" among much else (including the poem "Fifty Years" still one of the best meditations on Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation) and of the famous novel "The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man" (1912). But Johnson was much more. He served several tumultuous years in diplomatic service as American counsul to Venezuela and Nicaragua. With his brother, Rosamund, and Bob Cole, he formed part of a famed and highly-successful black songwriting and Vaudeville team in the early years of the Twentieth Century. Johnson founded the first African-American high school in his home town of Jacksonville, Florida and, almost in passing, he became the first African-American admitted to the Florida bar without attending Law School (by reading law and passing a treacherous oral examination.) Johnson was a newspaper editor and a founder of the NAACP where he took an active role in litigating against laws restricting the voting rights of African-Americans, and, in particular, worked tirelessly in support of Federal anti-lynching legislation. In the final decade of his life, Johnson taught creative writing and American literature at several universities and lived, for a time, the life of contemplation and reflection that he said had been his lifelong goal.
Johnson lived an inspiring life. And in his autobiography, "Along this Way" (1933) he allows the reader to share in much of it. The autobiography is a lengthy and detailed work in which Johnson not only tells the story of his life, but he also describes a good deal of African-American history in the South, where he grew up, and in the rest of the United States during the pivotal half-century following reconstruction. We can see in Johnson's story, for example, how segregation and Jim Crow gradually but forcefully came to pervade the Southern States in the late 19th and early 20th century. Johnson also gives vibrant descriptions of life in New York City, of the growth of Harlem, and of African-American singers, actors and entertainers on Broadway -- in which he himself played a prominent role. There are chilling descriptions of lynching and of Johnson's efforts to bring this barbaric practice to an end. One of the more memorable scenes of Johnson's personal life in the book is a description of how he himself was almost lynched when he was observed talking alone to a light-skinned woman in a public park in Jacksonville. (His would-be attackers thought the woman was white.)
The book is divided into four main sections, with the first describing Johnson's childhood and education at Atlanta University. Part two presents a picture of New York City and Johnson's efforts as a songwriter. Part three focuses on Johnsons counsular work in Latin America while Part four discusses Johnson's work with the NAACP. But these are only the broadest, bare-bones descriptions of an extraordinary life. Johnson combines his discussion of his public life with insightful comments on most of his writings, including his poetry, novel, his history "Black Manhattan" and his work as an anthologizer of African-American poetry and of Spirituals.
There are moments in the book when I wanted to know more of Johnson's inner life. He tells us, for example, of his courtship of and marriage to Grace Nail but, with the exception of some discussion of her reactions to Johnson's diplomatic posts, we see little of her in the book. Johnson is reticent, in common with most writers of autobiography, in letting us see too deeply beyond the public figure. But at the end of the book, he offers the reader some broad reflections, centering upon his agnosticism and of his hopes and ambitions for humanity.
Johnson's life focused upon his efforts to secure the rights of black people in the United States, but his life, work, and writings were universal in theme. In "Along this Way" he gives us the story of a life both active and reflective. His book is a precious work of American literature.
A True Classic!!!.......2002-11-30
I purchased this book several years back, as part of the research for my second book. I cannot recommend any book more highly. Anyone interested at all in African American life from the 1880s to the 1930s (particularly as it was lived in New York City from about 1899 to the Harlem Renaissance) should buy it. There is not a more fascinating autobiography in print anywhere! And the life of this man! He was the founder of the first high school for African Americans in the state of Florida, located in Jacksonville (the high school my own mother would attend); the first African American to pass the bar exam in the state of Florida; part of the first successful African American Broadway composing team (after he left Jacksonville and moved to New York City); composer of the lyrics to, "Lift Every Voice and Sing," the song long considered the African American national anthem (his brother Rosamond composed the music); a consulate in Nicaragua and Venezuela; the first executive secretary of the NAACP, in which capacity he pioneered anti-lynching legislation (though he was unsuccessful in seeing it pass, the effort is described in the book, and is a fascinating lesson in the machinations of Congressional politics in the 1920s); author of groundbreaking fiction such as, "The Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man"; author of the nonfiction classic, "Black Manhattan." The list goes on... His accomplishments, his dignity and intelligence were stunning, simply awe inspiring. And it is a real shame, an indication of how troubled our culture is, that Hollywood has never made a movie about his life, and he is barely mentioned as a key figure who shaped American culture (notice I didn't say African American culture, I said AMERICAN CULTURE). To everyone reading this review, BUY THIS BOOK. You are in for an experience so delicious it will shame you if you never before knew it existed. It will make you want to call for the resignation of all college professors who do not have "Along This Way" as REQUIRED READING for any course designed to examine the history of American culture.
