Some may find it unbelievable that a 20-year-old Oregon woman could be enslaved by a sexual sadist for seven years--that even after being able to move freely during the day, she would allow him to lock her into a wooden box every night. Perhaps it's a minor failing of this book that the authors do not elaborate on the psychology that made her such a "perfect victim." In other respects, though, the story is well told, with an impressive accumulation of details: the woman's capture, the tortures she endured, the brainwashing techniques, the fiendish contraptions her captor constructed, the slave contract he made her sign, and the increasingly strained relations within the peculiar family that included master, slave, wife, and child, all inside a single-wide trailer. As well-known attorney and author Vincent Bugliosi writes, "A gripping and disturbing story of the secret life of apparently normal people. At once, horrific and engrossing."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Scary that this could happen in Napa.......2007-06-08

This book was great. It went through the whole story and didn't leave anything out. The ending was great although I got really mad at the girl for staying with him. I don't want to give too much away about the ending. It's amazing that this could happen in such a small town as Napa but it did! I live close by but at the time this occured I was living in Florida and didn't hear anything about it. It was recommended by a co-worker and I have passed this one on for many friends to read. If you like true crime then this is a great book!

2 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2007-05-11

This book was sadly disappointing. I was expecting this elaborate book. What I read was a giant mess. The author skipped back and forth from when she was kidnapped to the court case. It made for a big huge puzzle of confusion and was not as good as it could have potentially been! I actually went through and read all the parts of her being kidnapped and what she went through and then went back and read the court case at the end. Then it seemed to make more sense to me but I still feel like I want my money back so I can buy a good true crime book, by a good author like Ann Rule....then I know I won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars depressing, yet uplifting.......2007-05-01

Four stars for the book, five stars for the story and five stars from my dearest sympathy.

From beginning to end, I experienced only .001% of what the victim must have experienced. It was just a smidgen, but I felt sad and I wanted to reach out to her... as well as beat the snot out of the sadist.

It's heart-breaking at times, but also uplifting with splashes of teeth-bearing disgust. Very notable for a true crime book.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting case! Book? Not so much........2007-03-13

The story of what happened to Colleen Stan really is horrendous, and so therefore this book is automatically pretty interesting. Trying to imagine years - YEARS - spent in darkness and sensory isolation, periodically broken by abuse and rape, is pretty terrifying. It is a wonder that Colleen Stan was able to hold it together in any way and retain some fragment of herself. That head box is pretty horrifying to think about.

The writing is where this book falls short. It was a very bad move, in my opinion, to switch back and forth from Colleen's ordeal to McGuire's life. It was silly; going from this poor girl's trauma to the young prosecutor's new job in a redneck office. I was really, really, PAINFULLY aware that the author WAS the prosecutor. Growing more and more frustrated with updates on her marriage, descriptions of her daughter, and illustrated moments (holding her baby while juxtaposed against a backdrop of hardcore porn is one of them) written in third person, I became a wee bit annoyed with this book.

But, the facts of this case, the details of the "Company", the empathy you feel for Colleen Stan and the urge to understand what happened within her mind, all outweigh the prosecutor/author's fascination with herself, and make for a very interesting book.

4 out of 5 stars The 'Oh, my God!' factor.......2007-01-10

Christine Mcguire did a wonderful job of telling this horrible true story. The crimes committed against these two women are almost unbelievable. I had a hard time putting the book down, because I became so ingrossed into finding out what happened. I needed to know if Colleen was able to move on with her life. Colleen is a remarkable woman. The only thing that I did not feel was necessary was all the information of the writer's life, while prosecuting this case. I felt that it took away some of the attention from the main story, and really wasn't something that the reader would really care about.

1 out of 5 stars I rarely write a bad review, but ..........2005-11-06

I am sorry to have to write a bad review on this novel, though I find sometimes negative criticism is good for a writer to improve, and I hope if the author reads this review that she is not hurt by what I have to say, but perhaps learns something for her next novel.

I was *sorely* disappointed in this novel. It had the makings of a great story, but alas, it was not. First of all, plot poorly constructed. Cerberus, Hades' 3 headed hound's job is to keep the living out of the Underworld and the dead in. He is not evil himself as he is made in this book. Also chacacter names and weapons are spelt wrong!! Xena's Horse is Argo (not Argos). Her weapon is called a Chakram (not a Charka, which is are points of light in and outside of the body). Roman and Greek mythology was mixed up. In Greece, the place of the Dead is called the Underworld and the God of the Dead is called Hades. In ancient Rome, the place of the Dead was called Hades, the God of the Dead, Pluto. Since Xena is set in ancinet Greece, the *God* should have been called Hades, not the place. And if Hades' hound is running amok, surely Hades (the God) would have something to say and do about it? He does not even get a *mention* in this poorly constructed novel. Again a very big disappointment. It's a wonder it got any positive reviews at all. Did they actually *read* the book!!?? The only two good things I'll say about this book were that I felt for the child seer character and the image of flames dancing was nice, but as for the rest of it, I really wonder how in Hades they made it past an agent and a publisher! Really! It angers me that there are many, many great writers out there, struggling to get wonderful writing out and stuff like this is printed. With a little more work, effort and research, the author could have really gone places with this book, but as it stands, I'd rather go to Hades.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2003-01-12

I read this book several years ago while the plot of the television series was still young, season 2 or 3. The book is consistant with that timeline, which has been screwed up, spun around, and dumped upside-down since then. Around the same time I also read the Ru Emmerson books, and I do like this book much better than those as they are not consistant to the Xena timeline/plot and cannot stand alone-you would have to read the first and then the second and so on to understand everything that's going on. This is a stand-on-its-own kind of book and has a Xena-like plot to it. One problem that seems consistant to me in the published Xena novels is lack of emotion. This book held more emotion than the Ru Emmerson books.
If you want a good, stand on its own Xena adventure, this is the book for you. If you want a Xena adventure the provokes serious emotions and feelings, as the show itself often did, you may want to consider online fan fiction.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't capture Xena Gabrielle characters.......2000-03-11

This book did a poor job of conveying the essences of Xena's and Gabrielles characters-especially compared with the Ru Emerson books. In this book Gabrielle does too much simpering and is too much a little girl-no thought is given to what makes Gabrielle and Xena a team. And the sexual tension between them is totally absent-this book seems more geared towards the young male audience than both the tv show and the Ru Emerson books-which I highly recommend-especially if you didn't like this one.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it though I didn't feel the entire Xena excitement........1999-11-03

This book is better than Xena.... Magic Arrow of Myx. I got the Xena feeling. I couldn't put it down. I was even doing house chores and reading it at the same time. "Prophecy of Darkness" was a very good book. Even this has a down side. I didn't quite get the ENTIRE Xena feeling and aura. But I would suggest it for all die hard and not so die hard Xenites alike.

3 out of 5 stars It was ok..........1999-09-02

Better than Ru Emerson's books. This book makes you feel that Xena and Gabby are friends and that Xena is developing as a character (with emotions towards other people), not just a paper-cut-out of a warrior.

    October 30th, 1938

Orson Welles and his famed Mercury Radio company begin broadcasting their infamous "War of the Worlds" production that will soon have more than a few Americans watching the skies with terror.

    Meanwhile, across town:

Two burglers {Bud the pro, looking for cash and Lester the clod, looking for a decent sandwich} break into a shabby deli run by down-on-her-luck but-still-has-a-heart-of-gold Rosie. Before the night is over, Mr. Welles horrifyingly real broadcast will have them looking at their lives in ways none of them could have imagined.

    Meanwhile, across the Galaxy:

A two man scoutship from an advanced civilization makes the last leg of its patrol before its weary and cynical Captain can gratefully order her home. Unfortunately, his crewmate is a twitchy do gooder boyscout type, yearning for any chance to liven up the soon to be completed dreary patrol. To the homesick Captain's dismay, the overeager Space Cadet gets his wish when he picks up the CBS War of the World broadcast, which of course he instantly and enthusiastically mistakes for a genuine invasion of poor little ol' Earth. And guess who must go to the rescue?

This SCI FI channel audio production was great fun to listen to for the most part. Walter Koenig gives a charmingly funny performance as the space weary Captain. Paul Singleton hams it up entertainingly as the ultimate in do gooder space cadets. Indeed, the cast gives strong performances all around, nicely balancing some amusing dialogue with a dose of welcome if somewhat predictable sentiment. All in all, I smiled thru most of the show, and laughed out loud on more than a few occasions.

Two caveats: This production was taped before a live audience so if your not a fan of background laughter in an audio production, be warned. Also keep in mind this production only runs about 1 hour.

    2 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING.......2007-06-20

Cover cookie - NOT IN BOOK - NOR IS PRACTICALLY ANYTHING LIKE IT. Has some good 'cookie' recipes - however, bought it for state of the art style impressive decorating, as seen in upscale merchandise (like the cover picture) - also saw their 'cake' book - ALSO HAS GORGEOUS COVER - VERY LITTLE INSIDE ABOUT HOW TO ACHIEVE THIS LOOK. I would say it borders on false advertising.

Service was excellent and prompt. The book arrived in excellent condition. Triple A-OK satisfaction on our part. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Super Cookie Book.......2006-01-19

I was delighted with this book. I love the recipes and especially the directions on decorating these special treats. Would recommend!

    3 out of 5 stars Not what I thought.......2005-12-06

I purchased this book with high hopes and great expectations. I have the Whimsical Bakehouse and was thrilled by it. This book was not what I assumed it would be. It is a collection of Christmas cookies of varying types. There are bar cookies, gingerbread, and cutouts, to name a few. I was hoping to find a book with wonderful decorating ideas for Christmas cutout cookies since that is what is displayed on the cover. In fact, they only give a template for that cookie but no real instruction as to how to achieve the look. Now, I am quite proficient at decorating, but sometimes need some great ideas to kick start my creativity. In fact, there were quite a few truly adorable cookies in the front section of the book, but no further information on them.

If you are one who prefers to figure out on your own how to achieve a certain look or don't mind the trial and error method then maybe you will like this. If you are looking for a collection of cookies to add to your library than this is a good option. However, if, like me, you are wanting to "WOW" people with spectacular, highly detailed Christmas cookies, this is probably not what you are looking for.

This humorous and loving collection of duotone portraits captures the golden years of humanity'’s best friends and most faithful companions. Sage and tender moments are caught on film and are paired with captions that reveal each dog's age and their secrets for a long and happy life, such as Tonto (12): "Lift and pee, lift and pee, lift and pee on every tree," and Kelsey (11): "Never let little dogs with bows in their hair get the best of you." These are dogs who know how to live life fully and recognize its priorities (like bacon). Old Friends is the perfect gift for dog owners and everyone who hopes to age gracefully in the canine spirit.

Mark Asher has captured, in a series of haunting photographs, the rare beauty and vast wisdom that old dogs give to those of us fortunate enough to love them unconditionally. If you have ever loved an old dog, this book is for you. Nothing here but fabulous pictures of old dogs and the secrets of their longevity expressed in brief but memorable phrases. This book makes a beautiful gift for the dog lover in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Old Friends Are the Best.......2007-01-05

This book was given to me by friends after my 13-year-old yellow lab died. It was a couple of months before I dared to open the book because I missed my old friend so much. When I finally read it, I realized it's a great book for anyone who has and adores their old dog. This book honors those precious animals who have for so many years given us comfort, love, laughs and companionship. I gave this book to many friends this past Christmas and all were grateful to receive something that once again justifies the intensity of emotion associated with a loving, aging canine friend.

This book is a must for anyone who has ever owned a dog or is just a dog lover. The captions are heart warming but the pictures say it all. Hopefully, Mr. Asher and his CEO Humphrey, will soon bring these "Old Friends" back into the limelight, with a new book. I assure you, I will be one of the first in line to buy it.

The gallery of finished bags at the end of the book, in full color, is a joy to look at and an inspiration for any beader no matter the skill level. This is a book I continue to go back to as a source of reference and design ideas. One of the best beading books on the market today.

5 out of 5 stars A beading book covering many techniques and great photos.......1997-10-10

This book is one of the best for covering techniques of beading and provides a gallery of inspirational photographs of the works of some of the greatest bead artists of today. It has clear diagrams for peyote stitch, right angle weave, looming, and netting. It has nothing to do with New Age to which Amazon.com has linked it: it is a how-to book for making seed bead jewelry. It also discusses bead types, threads, and has a color chart of the Delica beads that were available in 1994 as a reference in the inside back cover I have owned this book since 1994 and the photos have been a source of continuing inspiration to me. The reference sections for beading techniques are always handy if you forget how to do something. I recommend it to beginners and experienced beaders alike as a great addition to their beading reference library. Although it is three years old, it is still very fresh and current.

5 out of 5 stars The Guide to Home Decorating Indian Style.......2002-06-05

Priscilla Kohutek's The Guide to Home decorating Indian Style is one of the most practical and readable home decorating books we have had the pleasure of owning. The user-friendly layout makes it an excellent how-to book for everything from simple and inexpensive makeovers to full-scale redos. Priscilla's helpful hints and solutions to real-life problems are supported by beautiful photographs, renderings and computer drawings. Her advice for making the most out of small spaces helped us make our kitchen a better place to work in. We also like her ideas for arranging the knickknacks we've collected and didn't know what to do with. This is a great book for people like us who want to make their home look good but can't afford to spend a lot of money on it.

          4 out of 5 stars Imaginative Decorating.......2002-05-30

Are you stumped about what to do with various rooms in your home? Does trying to get the right mix of furniture styles leave you dizzy? In a quandary about what window treatment you need for those huge domed windows? Priscilla Kohutek has written a delightfully readable guide for solving decorating problems. Although the emphasis is on Indian style the many ideas given can work with almost any style one chooses. The book is divided into practical sections. The question and answer format works very well. The answers to a myriad of decorating problems are easy to find. The photography and illustrations are first rate. Many of the decorating ideas that use Indian cloth, accent pieces and art are available here in the U.S. The superb artwork in the book enables you to easily visualize how the same idea might work for you. It will also help you use items from other parts of world in the same manner helping you create your own unique setting. This is a reference book you're going to want to keep handy.

                Book Description

Like so many "news events," the Rodney King incidents the beating, the trial and the uprising that followed have all but disappeared from public dialogue. Reading Rodney King/Reading Urban Uprising keeps this public debate alive by exploring the connections between the incidents and the ordinary workings of cultural, political, and economic power in contemporary America. Its recurrent theme is the continuing though complicated significance of race in American society.

The Rodney King incidents raised a number of questions regarding the relationships between poverty, racial ideology, economic competition, and the exercise of political power. What is the relationship between the beating of Rodney King and the workings of racism in America? How was it possible for defense attorneys to convince a jury that the videotape it saw did not depict an excessive or unjustified use of violence? In the burning of Koreatown, what role did racial stereotypes of African Americans and Korean Americans play, and what role did various economic factors play? What is the significance of the fact that the L.A. police department, when responding to the uprising, sent its officers to Westwood but not Koreatown? And how, finally, are we to understand the fact that not all of Los Angeles' various Latino communities took part in the uprising?

Reading Rodney King/Reading Urban Uprising includes essays by prominent philosophers, social scientists, literary critics and legal scholars. They explore these issues from a variety of distinct, theoretical perspectives, offering a nuanced picture of the Rodney King incidents. Avoiding reductionism, they illuminate the complex interplay of ideological, political and economic forces impinging on urban America.

With America's black, Hispanic, and Asian populations continuing to grow, the issue of race has come to dominate political debates on public policy and educational struggles over multicultural curricula. Expressing cynicismwith "politics as usual," many Americans have felt the need to break from simplistic and stereotypical thinking about these issues. Reading Rodney King/Reading Urban Uprising will be valuable reading not only to public policy makers and educators, but to anyone looking for serious and fresh insights into the question of race in contemporary America.
