Book Description

The lovely Caroline Bingley is engaged to marry a rich and charismatic American. Unfortunately this windswept courtship is marred by many strange events such as nocturnal wanderings, spooked horses, carriage accidents, and atypical incidents of mortal consequence. Soon the whole Bingley family seems the target of a sinister plot, with only the Darcys recognizing the danger .In Pride and Prescience, the Darcys take center stage as the Regency era's answer to The Thin Man's Nick and Nora in search of the truth, universally acknowledged and otherwise.

Barely Tolerable.......2007-09-21
This is an okay book for a light read, but very hard to picture the Jane Austen's characters in that role. Elizabeth and Darcy were VERY bland. I missed the intensity Austen was able to create between them. They were very out of character in many ways. If it had been different characters I would have enjoyed it (a bit) more. Although, maybe I wouldn't have ever read it otherwise. If you are going to read this book, just imagine a different, very dull couple and don't expect the Elizabeth and Darcy from P&P.
Darcy and Elizabeth as Mulder and Scully.......2007-09-19
I don't know who these people are, but the Mr. and Mrs. Darcy in this book have no more to do with Jane Austen's characters of the same name than they have to do with Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara. The idea of a Regency-era couple solving supernatural mysteries is interesting, but please, please, invent a new couple for the experiment. Leave Darcy and Elizabeth out of it!
Disappointing! .......2007-08-08
I picked this book up expecting a cozy mystery set in Jane Austen's world and that's how the book started. I was delighted with the opening chapter! Unfortunately, half way through it quickly turned plausible motives and intrigue into outright absurdity.
Caroline Bingley's mind is controlled via a Lord-of-the-Rings-esqu way. Elizabeth and Darcy have their first married fight over the existance of magic. And Darcy, Bingley, and company are all placed under the influence of supernatural forces.
I wanted the book to continue with Austen's story, but the story doesn't follow in her vein. Sorry, Elizabeth battling other worldly forces isn't my cup of tea.
Lesson learned: always read more than the first review.......2007-07-18
I saw the title of this book briefly, and instantly decided to borrow it from the library. I am glad that I did not buy it: it is not worth the space on my bookshelves.
In my opinion, Pride and Prescience contains three (non-contiguous) pages of truly wonderful Austen-like writing. Much of the rest is decent enough, but there are no perfectly crystallized characters, very few _mots juste_, and some of the characters that we already know are strangely altered: their words seem just slightly odd, their responses seem just slightly off. I suppose that some alterations were necessary to make the plot work, and more changes may have been made because of imperfect historical research, but overall I was disappointed.
If there's one concrete piece of information that may help you decide for or against this book, it is this: "Black magic" drives the strange plot.
While that may tickle the fancy of some readers, personally I think this is a very strange choice. While investigations into psychic phenomena were popular among certain elements in Victorian England (mid-19th century), Bebris' decision to morph our Regency-era Elizabeth Bennett into a person with paranormal/psychic talents is outrageous to those who love Elizabeth and/or those who know anything about social history. Dear Jane is probably spinning in her grave with the violence done to her character's character, and I'm sure that history teachers who pounded the dates of the English Regency (1811 to 1820) into students's heads are appalled by this careless conflation of the two periods.
What I really learned in the end is that I need to read more than just the first few lines of the top Amazon reviews. Blithely assuming that anything with these characters is likely to be pleasant proved to be an unsafe assumption. In this case, the reviews with the lowest ratings really were the ones that would have told me what I wanted to know -- if only I'd read them.
The Darcys Meet Scooby Doo and Gang.......2007-07-07
First, a definition (from Wikipedia):
Prescience is the full knowledge of all possibilities.... Throughout history a number of cultures have believed that oracles have possessed this ability. It is one of a number of psychic phenomena studied by parapsychology. Although there is no scientific evidence for prescience, this has not prevented a huge number of people in the modern world from believing in astrology and visiting fortune tellers.
When I brought this book home from the library, my girls asked what the title meant. I told them that I didn't know exactly, I only knew it was supposed to be a mystery novel centered around the characters from Pride and Prejudice. After trying to read this book, though, I wish I would have looked at the title as closely as my children. To mix Elizabeth and Darcy with anything that leaned towards oracles, psychic phenomena, astrology, or fortune tellers? That, my friends is just wrong. But one thing at a time.
I don't believe that Barris presumed to think anyone would mistake her voice for Jane Austen's. Any of the modern books that try to follow the characters and storylines from Austen's classic novels seem built on the premise of "We all know her stuff was better, we're just trying to have some fun here." And I think Barris did a fairly decent job of keeping true to the characters...I mean, sort of. It wasn't horrible. But it was like listening to a stand-up comic doing a passable imitation of someone else that is truly famous.
Other reviews I've read for this novel lambast Barris' disregard for keeping with the proper vernacular of Austen's time. This wasn't an element of the novel that bothered me the most, but it did cross my mind. Like little weeds creeping up through fertile soil, modern snippets of conversation - or even just exposition - periodically slid into Barris' attempt at writing circa-Austen. (ie: one description of Darcy "spooning" up next to Elizabeth as she slid into bed)
So, the writing wasn't terrible, the characters were recognizable, but things for me started to unravel with the format of the mystery. Nothing really smooth about many of the plot "twists." More like blazing red arrows hovering above heads as if to say, "Look at me! Listen to me! I may be someone you want to remember for later!" Barris may as well have put big asterisks next to each conversation about gothic novels, too - as if to say, "HINT HINT HINT....COME AND GET YOUR DARK, SPOOKY, MYSTERIOUS FILL RIGHT HERE!".
After a while, it just got plain silly. Right down to the part where the Darcys corner the bad guy and he spills out all his dastardly plans in a two and half page monologue. And I like me some fantasy elements here and there, in the right place and with the right story. But OH. MY. WORD. This story ends with some incredibly laughable magical explanations for everything that has happened to the Darcys in ye olde Regency England. And Elizabeth's final thoughts of the book made me wince and give woe unto the idea that there's more to come. "In quiet moments, however, she sometimes withdrew Professor Randolph's amulet and pondered his parting words to her. 'I believe you have a gift,' he had said. 'A very powerful one. Should you ever choose to cultivate it, let me know.' Perhaps one day she would."
Let me just tell it to you like this: in my opinion, this book isn't much more than The Darcys Meet Scooby Doo and Gang. If only I'd had the prescience of mind to know that before I bothered to waste my time!!

Customer Reviews:
Good book, would have benefited from better illustrations.......2001-05-30
I liked this book, particularly since it deals with the best character from the original Star Trek, Spock, and the second best character, his father. There have only been glimpses of Spock's family in the various series (e.g., "Journey to Babel", the animated episode "Yesteryear"), but this novel provides more of an insight into the difficulties Spock had as a child straddling two worlds, human and Vulcan. Nice book, but I've never been terribly impressed by Todd Cameron Hamilton as an artist..., and his work here is particularly derivative, obvious and uninspired.
The beginning of Spock's Starfleet career........2000-01-18
This book is very well written it shows spock at a young age being the intellegent and also stubborn vulcan we all know. After a Diplomatic trip with his father a young vulcan seems to be a target for assination. Do you think Spock sits back and hides? Not our Spock.
Want to know about Spock's early adventures?.......1997-10-16
From the strict Vulcan academy to saving diplomats, Spock does it all. Spock the half human, half Vulcan, he feels as he doesn't belong. Spock befriends a son of a diplomat and the conspiracy just flows through. It is refreshing to see young Spock and his dealing with his father.
The only Starfleet Academy never in the Academy!.......1997-03-14
This should be in a series called Star Trek Kids, not Starfleet Academy. The story never took place at the Academy. It was a good book, don't get me wrong, but Spock should have been in the Academy for at least a portion of the story.
The story line was great! Spock's family relationships were well thought out.
Todd C. Hamilton did another supior job.
Book Description
The best crowd-pleasing recipes from widely acclaimed country inns and bed & breakfasts in the United States are collected in this unique cookbook and travel guide. More than 340 inns and 1,500 recipes are collected here, some from the finest chefs in America, while others represent the best in mouth-watering homestyle cooking.
More than a cookbook, Best Recipes from American Country Inns and Bed & Breakfasts is organized alphabetically - state-by-state. It is a reliable guide to the inns themselves, including addresses, phone numbers, and a listing of activities available at each inn. There are two extensive indexes. One allows you to find the inns by city and state, and the other allows the reader to find any recipe or type of recipe quickly and easily.
Kitty and Lucian Maynard have written two similar books, The American Country Inn and Bed & Breakfast Cookbook, Vol. I and Vol. II. These have been selections of Book-of-the-Month Club, the Better Homes and Gardens Book Club, and Family Bookshelf. The first book was featured on the back of Just Right cereal boxes. Reviews rave about the excellent, tasty recipes:
"Everything we tried was terrific!" - Brunswick (Maine) Times Record
"Many of these dishes are unique creations of the inn chefs and are not to be found elsewhere." - The Midwest Book Review
"Chock full of mouthwatering recipes . . . a grand selection of entrees." - Levittown (Pennsylvania) Courier-Times

A reviewer, "Charles Holcomb", has reviewed all the books written by Douglas Hensley and Pattie Hensley. He has also reviewed several competing books -- such as this one -- and used those reviews as an opportunity to mention the "superior quality" of the book written by Douglas Hensley or Pattie Hensley. The Hensley titles are as follows:
- "Lost Stories From Hell" by Douglas Hensley
- "Magic Voodoo Spells" by Douglas Hensley
- "Hell's Gate: Terror at Bobby Mackey's Music World" by Douglas Hensley
- "Automobile Sales Training and Tips From The Pros" by Douglas Hensley

I had the extreme misfortune to purchase both of the Maynards Books. The recipes are riddled with errors from Page 1 recipe 1 - example first recipe on Page 1 - 1 plus 2 Tablespoons of WHAT.AS IT IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE TO RETURN BOOKS FROM SOUTH AFRICSA I AM DISGUSTED THAT PUBLISHERS AND AUTHORS ARE ALLOWED TO PUBLISH WITHOUT CHECKING THE CONTENTS OF THESE BOOKS.OUR EXCHANGE RATE IS PROHIBITIVE SO IS THE POSTAGE. BOTH OF THE BOOKS PURCHASED ARE A DISGRACE TO THE PUBLISHING INDUSTRY. WE DO NOT ALWAYS HAVE THE TIME TO PERUSE QUICKLY AND I CAN IDENTIFY AT LEAST 7 ERROS FROM PAGES 1 - 40 ON ONE OF THE BOOKS ONLY.
Don't waste your money!.......2005-08-25
This book was a huge disappointment, and I returned my copy. As the recipes are divided by Inn, main dishes, side dishes, breakfasts, breads, desserts are totally mixed together. The print is small and pale. Worse, it does not include any comments to indicate that the recipes are tried-and-true, or what makes them special -- and they don't appear to have even been tested by the authors. There are a number of outstanding cookbooks featuring the best recipes from B&Bs, and the others are sorted by subject (so all cakes will be together, etc.), include the innkeepers' comments about why they're so special, were tested by the authors, and include the authors observations. Amazon carries most (if not all) of them. Don't waste your money on this garbage!
Travel/Cooking Hybrid Unsatisfying.......2004-04-16
I had several problems with this book. As a travel guide to inns and B&Bs across the country, it is well organized and informative. But as a book that purports to deliver the "best" in country inn cooking, it leaves a bit to be desired.
Instead of gathering recipes and actually publishing the best ones they found (which would have resulted in a richly varied selection of dishes of consistently good quality), the authors seem to have selected the inns first, then published a handful of each inn's best offerings. This results in a jumble of recipes that veer wildly from haute cuisine challenging to "open-a-can" basic, throwing together in a very unsatisfying manner recipes based mostly on convenience foods with recipes designed to creatively showcase fresh local ingredients. And since the book is organized by STATE, instead of by grouping the recipes together logically by type, if you want to see, for example, all of the redundant muffin recipes (LOTS of duplication here), you must look in the index in the back of the book and seek them out, state by state, one page at a time.
I also find the cover design of this book to be a tad misleading. While the gorgeously constructed dish that is pictured on the front cover may well be found somewhere in this book, it shares space with recipes that offer no more deliberation than "open a few cans, stir everything together, serve it in a casserole dish". If you are attracted to this volume because it appears to offer elegance and innovation as the cover is certainly attempting to suggest, you will be disappointed.
In summary, I didn't like this book because it is difficult to browse, offers recipes of inconsistent quality, and has a habit of mentioning ingredients and techniques that may be unfamiliar to many home cooks, without offering further explanation. In short, it is not a well-organized and informative cooking book.
HOWEVER, as a random collection of recipes, it might turn out to be just dandy. With a purported 1500 to choose from, each of us are bound to find a handful of treasures that are well-suited to the way we like to cook and eat, regardless of experience or skill level. Just be prepared to have to sieve through pages and pages of things you think are uninteresting before you can find those gems.

Confused, but enjoyable anyway.......2007-01-27
Well, imagine my suprise when I began reading this book only to discover that it had nothing to do with Dog the Bounty Hunter. I had prepared myself to delve deeply into the inner workings of this man by strapping on an extra absorbant Depends adult undergarment and surrounding myself with copius amounts of food to sustain me throughout my intended reading frenzy. I still read the book, and I guess it's great if you want to train actual dogs, but as a guide to help you stalk a trained bounty hunter? Well I had to subtract one star for that shortcoming.
A favorite.......2004-04-19
Incredible book - it is so complete and really requires re-reading numerous times. For those who have difficulties with technical terms I advise buying the Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary dictionary - probably the best of its kind and truly a good companion when reading such advanced books.
well worth the time and money!.......2003-08-16
This book along with volume one are the most in depth and useful books on dogs, their behavior and training. A 'must read' for those who work with dogs and very useful for the owner who wants to know dogs better.
Outstanding.......2001-06-30
For a dog behaviour professional, this book and its companion volume have to be the most useful and important resource around. Not for the casual dog owner, but then that's not the target market. A wealth of material, well presented and organised, and without bias. Now when's the one on behaviour modification coming out??!!!
Aye Yie Yie!.......2001-06-22
I would give this book five stars if it weren't for the level of difficulty in reading it...just had to take off a star for that reason alone. This isn't the book for the first time dog owner or casual trainer. It's a serious book for the well-versed student of dog behavior and training. Mr. Lindsay definitely knows what he's talking about but the reader must already have a fairly good grasp of the "concepts" behind his explanations in order to fully understand the material. It was a good read that I had trouble putting down, though! If you're serious about learning the more advanced concepts and principles in dog behavior and training, the book is well laid out and informative to the max!
Book Description
Auctions are a great way to start or add to a collection, furnish a home, purchase a special wedding gift, or own a unique piece of history. And whether they are traditional auctions or online auctions, they can be exciting entertainment, too. But for the many people who are intimidated by auction fears, getting started is half the battle. Leslie Hindman, the Chicago auctioneer and host of two HGTV shows, At the Auction and Appraisal Fair, now shares her inspiring advice on smart buying and selling in
Adventures at the Auction.
As one of America's best-known auctioneers, Leslie Hindman provides not only what auction-goers need to know, but also reassurance and practical information. She arms readers with the ten most common auction myths, the five most common auction blunders, and the five most important criteria for determining value, along with simple auction basics and hundreds of tips on strategy. She covers buying and selling from beginning to end, with ideas that will inform the seasoned buyer as well as the novice. Then, to inspire readers with the possibilities, she identifies twelve popular categories where bargains still exist, from books to silver to timepieces. Along the way, she entertains with anecdotes from her own twenty-five-year career as an auctioneer. Best of all, for those who want to attend auctions only at home, Hindman includes "On the Internet" sections throughout the book, describing the joys and pitfalls of buying and selling online. As a bonus, she offers glossaries of terms for both traditional and online auctions, a list of Internet acronyms, a directory of auction houses, and a color section that shows, step by step, item by item, what to look for when checking out a potential purchase.
Whether you want to go to an auction or log onto eBay, Leslie Hindman's
Adventures at the Auction is an invaluable companion.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Fairly complete.......2002-10-26
This book is good for what it is--but the Internet auction information seemed to be tacked on as an afterthought at the end of each of the four major sections. I think that the Internet auction information should have been organized in a section of its own.
For example, the section on "Choosing an Auction House" discusses catalogs, commissions, marketing, etc. The Internet information included in this same section included selling basics, attracting a clientele, feedback, opening bids, and fraud disputes. These topics just do not fit into a chapter with live auction information.
Another thing--the Internet topics are not even listed in the Table of Contents, giving me more reason to suspect that they were afterthought!
One reviewer listed all the chapters and their contents, so I will not duplicate that.
I did learn a lot about appraisals, estimates, "as is", and the top ten auction bargains including silver flatware, chandeliers, old books, and monogrammed objects.
Doesn't Live Up To It's Title.......2002-02-03
The title of this book claims that 4 subjects will be covered: Buying at live auction, selling at live auction, buying online and selling online. Personally, I was hoping that the author, a real expert in selling things at auction, would share some tricks of the trade and tell me some things about selling that I don't already know.
Unfortuneately, the only subject she really covers adequately is buying at live auction (and she does an excellent job at it). Her comments about selling at live auction boil down to how to pick an auction house. You can find much more than she tells you about buying online in the Ebay help pages. And she says even less on selling online.
It's too bad! She could probably give us Ebay sellers some really good advice about how to present our articles and how to put together and split up lots to maximize appeal. She knows how to do these things and she writes very well. I get the feeling that she wanted to do a book that encouraged people to attend auctions (she founded a big auction house in the MidWest so she would be interested in that) but her publisher wanted to do the Ultimate Guide.
She won the argument -- and we all lost out!
Good for someone who wants to attend live auctions; practically useless otherwise!
This animal is a keeper.......2001-10-01
I bought this because I did not know everything about auctions. However as was not going to buy a pig in a poke. The first thing going for it was the fact that I watched Leslie weekly on HGTV and this has helped me many times. Secondly I opened to the sections that I already feel comfortable with such as books and glass. She knew what I knew.
Now that I have read this book ad applied some of its principles I can tell you that it is a keeper. If you already know the subject it is nice to have it restated in a different way. If you do not know the subject you can live on every word she says. There are very few color plats in the book; yet the descriptions are so clear that color plates are not necessary.
Even online auctions are covered and I found the fact that there are very many online auction locations not just the big three of interest. For those people that have never been to an auction this book will give them the courage and the tools needed.
As good as the HGTV show maybe better.......2001-06-12
While I watch little television I do admit I like "At The Auction" on HGTV (House and Garden T V) with the author of this book Leslie Hindman.. The book is just shy 250 pages and has Chapters about:
Starting Out: Types of auctions the top 10 auction bargains common myths and misperceptions Five auction blunders and how to avoid them and the 10 criteria for determining value of an item. i.e. "I can't afford auctions", "You have to be a real expert to buy" " I can always change my mind if I find something wrong with the item".
Getting Ready: Why people buy at an auction The presale exhibition "As Is" and what this really means and Scoping out the Exhibition
Buying at the Auction: Setting the scene and Bidding. Am I the only one who couldn't afford to bid on even lint at Jackie O's auction?
Selling at the Auction: Where does the stuff come from and Choosing an auction house.
Collecting: which deals with an introduction to collecting everything from Books Ceramics, Dolls, Fine Arts, Furniture, Glass (American cut, Carnival, Crackle, Depression, Mercury, Milk Ruby etc) And no milk glass is not the same as milk in a glass.
Jewelry (no my cubic ziconia thingie wasn't listed) , Metalwork, Quilts (ours get used so they will never be collectors items), Oriental rugs, Silver, Timepieces (nope my trusty TIMEX wasn't listed) etc.
Then the Glossary of terms and even Internet auction information and abbreviations and then a listing of U S auction houses. WOW did you know that Hyden Idaho has an auction house? No auction houses in Nowhere Nevada.
Fair Warning!.......2001-03-14
Anyone who has watched Leslie Hindman on the "Appraisal Fair" or "At The Auction" television shows knows that she's got to be fun, informative and professional. This book blends a good overall coverage of the auction world, many amusing anecdotes and a considerable amount of very helpful tips to the novice auction-goer. She covers both live auctions and on-line with a lot of really solid advice, but she keeps her sense of humor. If you like watching Leslie's television shows, you've got to get this book. It makes you want to meet her and ask all those pesky antique and auction questions you have--until you find out she answered most of them in the book!

Book Description
Season of the Western Witch marks the debut of Los Angeles artist Georganne Deen's poetry. Deen began compiling her poetry from her early childhood in Fort Worth, Texas and has since developed an intensely personal style by mixing nursery rhymes with perfume ads, new age ideas, beat poetry, and rock-n roll-madness. A peep show into a fierce and fragile comedy most would be loathe to lay open, the book features a foreword by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and a CD packed with material by Deen, Moore, and Mortensen.
