Wonderful and Warm-hearted Fantasy.......1999-08-26

This is a wonderful book, containing four beautiful and soul-touching stories. But now it's out of print! I had lent the book to a friend, who mislaid it -- but thankfully he found it, and returned it to me today! The stories are classic and universal, and I am deeply disappointed with Eerdmans for discontinuing this title.

This book was suggested by a chef at the college where I am taking a wonderful baking course. Bread Alone gives you the basics of baking as well as answering the many questions we all have. Great recipes. Buy it and enjoy.

An excellent place to begin.......2005-12-15

Before buying this book, I'd not done much bread baking before. On the few occasions I had tried, invariably the results were lifeless white breads that seemed to have more in common with the flavor and texture of paste than bread. With Daniel Leader's book I learned the value of bread starters and slower fermentation. This lead to a marked improvement in the flavor and texture of my bread. (it also makes baking a lot more fun).

My favorite discussion in the book is the description of the Levain and other wild yeast breads. The procedure for creating a starter in the book worked surprisingly well for me and the resulting bread is fantastic. I'm now an "avid" baker and my family and I have gotten a lot of enjoyment from the start I found in this book.

How I learned to bake bread!.......2005-09-11

I purchased this book because I had tried to bake bread in the past and the results were disapointing. I found this book extemely helpful and it has become my baking "Bible". I know it can sometimes be tedious, but if you try to follow the instructions as close as possible, the results are absolutely delicious! I have even started ordering organic stone ground flour and the flavor and texture of my bread has improved as the author said they would. Buy this book if you are serious about baking delicious bread.

Best Artisan Bread Book Period.......2005-05-25

Absolutely sure fire book for baking artisan bread. Each section of the book has a core of recipes that followed will result in wonderful bread. The only thing you need to watch is the amount of flour that a recipe calls out. Depending on density it varies wildly, but to give him credit he does say to weigh it, but you need to experiment with the correct texture and feel. I have probably 10 books on breads, but this is the one I use and the one I can't live without.

Also it has an absolutely surefire Pain de levain recipe with about 6 variations of the same recipe, and two of the best baguette recipes I have tried. No other recipe has given the results that this book does. The sourdough starter is sure fire also.

If you want to learn how to bake good bread using only flour, water, salt, and starter/yeast this is it.

I wish it had gotten more in depth on variously commonly kept species, and gotten more in depth about breeding...
This is a great introductory book on how to set up your aquarium for seahorses and gives a decent overview of feeding and nutrition. Supplement this book with more species specific information, which can be found online in the various forums about seahorse keeping.

This book is very small. It gives a brief description of each of the major breeds of seahorses. I was hoping for more specific and detailed information for those of us who want to learn to raise them. You also definately need an additional saltwater aquarium book.

I've always thought seahorses were unique and would like to learn to care for them and set up my own aquarium. I never realized how many different breeds there are! This book gives a lot of information about how to care for seahorses and equipment you need. It also talks about their different habits and how to get the most out of your pet. It doesn't give a whole lot of information on caring for your salt water acquarium. It seems it's for people who already know the basics, even though it gives you good information on how to care for your seahorses in the saltwater tank. If you don't know a lot about saltwater acquariums (like me) I would suggest buying this book along with Saltwater Acquariums for Dummies. But all in all it is a good book!

This book surveys jewelry from as early as 5000 BC to the mid 20th century and showcases work from all over the world. What I like about this book is that there are lots of photos, both color and black and white. Most of the photos are large, and all of them show clear details. Since the book covers so much time and geographic area, there is not a lot of information on each time/culture, but that's understandable. An inspiring book for the jewelry designer, a great coffee table book for everyone else!

Looking for something different to make on your scroll saw? Then this is your book. Take a flat piece of 3/4" hardwood, using a bevel cut and these patterns, you create a fold out basket. Quite unique designs.

This book contains 8 pages of instuctions. The basic techique for creating a basket is the same for all basket designs, just different bevel angles and shapes. Also included are some helpful hints on making mirrors, picture frames, clocks and weather stations, all with the same design. There is also a section on how to customize the basket project with dates/names for anniversaries or birthdays.

The 8 pages of color photos shows examples of different project techniques and is a great aid in what a final project looks like. A great book for unique designs and projects.

Move over "Scarlet Letter".......2005-03-27

I had the opportunity to read this book. From the moment of the first word to the very last word, the book draws you in to read more. The graphic descriptions can take you to the other side of the world and stand next to the author on his travels. You know what it was like be black during the "Jim Crow" days on the trains in the south. Granted that my 25 years never saw the ugly side of America, his visual imagery is just so vivid that I seriously think they should dump "Scarlett Letter" and place this book on the reading lists of High School Students.

Fighting Germany and America........2000-04-20

Charles Dryden's book forces people to see the trials and tribulations encountered by black servicemen and women during WWII. I was shocked to read about the different encounters with 'Jim Crow' that Dryden and his peers waded through during their service years. A must for anybody curious about WWII, the Tuskegee Airmen or about the fight for civil rights in America.

A definitive study in courage.......1999-12-16

I meet Col. Dryden when he gave a talk about his experiences and his book. I then read the book a felt a tremendous respect for the author and all the Tuskeegee Airmen. Col. Dryden tells his personal story in a way that made me feel as though I was there with him the whole time. The challanges of blacks in America in his story left a powerful impact on me, the courage the author displayed is an insperation. A-Train is very well written and reads easily. It is an powerful story that left me feeling inadequate and ashamed to be white. I had the oportunity to meet Col. Dryden again and sought him out just to shake his hand again, knowing him from his book, it was hard to hide my emotions.

Excellent memoir of a man from an interesting age.......1998-05-21

I initially bought this book expecting it to be similar to the other slew of WWII books out there ( The ME-109 dove at me out of the sun with guns blazing...). Instead I got an honest account of a man who wanted to fly for his country and be treated with the same respect as any other pilot. Dryden's memories and descriptions of his voyage through training to be a pilot as well as the segregated and de-segregated Air Force are interesting and honest. Dryden't narrative is not the heart-pounding, can't-put-the-book down type but rather the story of a man who, faced with tremendous adversity from his own society and country, persevered. There is no bitterness in Dryden's story, and I put the book down tremendously impressed by his belief in himself, in his religion and his friend. It's a good book
