Book Description

For one of Innisdale's residents, a priceless sonnet means poetic license to kill. . . .

Grace Hollister's stay in England's picturesque Lake District has proven doubly fruitful -- the American literary scholar just sold her first book, and her romance with charming antiques dealer and ex-jewel thief Peter Fox has begun a new chapter. Sorting through a hoard of papers found in an old farmhouse, Grace and Peter discover an old letter that refers to a lost Shelley sonnet, "Sate the Sphinx." Before Grace can start tracking down this poetic treasure, though, Peter's shady past rears its head -- a particularly ugly head, belonging to a menacing Turk who's eager to see Peter dead.

But there's plenty more trouble in store. Suddenly Grace and Peter are suspects in a murder investigation, and someone has tried his level best to kill her -- not once, but twice. The hieroglyphics are on the wall: unless Grace can unravel an inscrutable riddle and unearth the villain amid a cache of likely suspects, her story might be at an end. . . .

5 out of 5 stars Peter and Grace are Back!!.......2007-01-11

The Poetic Death Mysteries have become quite a lot of fun for me to read. The characters of Peter and Grace are wonderful as they solve mysteries and discover things about each other. It's a witty series and I hope there will be a 4th. book.

4 out of 5 stars Death and the search for a lost sonnet.......2006-11-14

Grace Hollister is still staying in the Lake District. She has just sold her first book, and is enjoying her time with the charming antiques dealer and ex-jewel thief Peter Fox.

Peter recently acquired all the antique furnishings and papers from an old farmhouse. They begin to sort everything out. Grace discovers an old letter that refers to a Shelley sonnet, "Sate the Sphinx" that has never been published and is now lost. The writer appears to have disappeared during World War II not long after writing it. Unfortunately before they can sort the rest of the papers, boxes and boxes of papers, to try to find the sonnet, everything is purchased back by the current owner.

Hayri Kayaci was a guard in the Turkish prison Peter served some time in. He shows up at Rogue's Gallery (Peter's gallery). He demands the return of an item that Peter has no idea how to obtain. He threatens to extradite Peter if he doesn't cooperate.

Soon after that, Hayri is found murdered. Peter is the prime suspect. Grace is conflicted on whether she thinks Peter did it.

In the meantime, she is hot on the trail of the sonnet. She is trying to piece together the life of the man who discovered it and wrote about it.

Can she find the sonnet and evade the person trying to kill her? Will she be able to figure out who is the murderer?

I really like Grace and Peter. They are such fun characters. The Lake District setting really adds to the story.

I was sad to learn that this is the last in this series at this time. I hope the author is able to locate a new publisher fast so that we can have many more adventures with Grace and Peter.

I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A good story well told.......2006-08-27

This book was a good read with engaging characters plus an interesting mystery about a Shelley sonnet. The setting in the Lake District was fun to read about as well. I loved all the lore about the Romantic poets and the quotes. I enjoyed this book so much that I quickly read the first two in the series. Now I'm waiting impatiently for the fourth.

5 out of 5 stars Just my cup of tea.......2006-08-17

Diana Killian is a thoughtful writer, and SONNET OF
THE SPHINX is just my cup of tea. It's funny. It's a
good story. The writing is lovely. I like the
protagonist, Grace Hollister, an American literary scholar
sojourning in England's Lake District. I like
her romantic interest, Peter Fox, who plays the good
guy/bad guy role that Cary Grant perfected in
movies like "To Catch a Thief."

In this third book of Killian's Poetic Death
series, Grace is enjoying her 15 minutes of fame after
writing a book about the search for a lost work by Lord
Byron. She's to be guest speaker at an annual Romantic
literature conference. She's still working at
Rogue's Gallery with Peter, jewel thief turned antiques
dealer.

If there are small clouds on her horizon they
are a touch of homesickness and a growing uneasiness
about her relationship, or lack thereof, with Peter.

Peter has bought the contents of a 17th century
farmhouse from the new owner, a wealthy Japanese
collector named Matsukado. When Peter and Grace
begin sorting through the packing boxes, she finds an
old letter referring to "Shiloh's poesy." It's
addressed to "Dearest Girl" and signed "John."

It's a riddle Grace can't resist, especially
since "Shiloh" was Lord Byron's nickname for Shelley,
and "the witch Posey" appears in Shelley's poetry.
So who was John and why was the letter hidden in an old
musical brochure?

Almost before she finishes reading the letter,
however, Matsukado's chauffeur, who may or may
not be a ninja, shows up with news that Matsukado wants
his goods back, and is willing to swap valuable
Asian art for the packing boxes and all their contents.
The plot begins to thicken.

Killian touches all the bases in this tale of a
lost poem and stolen antiquities. The characters,
along with the usual village eccentrics, include a
disagreeable detective inspector, a librarian
from hell, and a disgraced Turkish prison guard who's
looking for a legendary diamond known as The
Serpent's Egg.

While Peter has unexpected problems of his own
to deal with, Grace's pursuit of a lost Shelley sonnet
takes her into an abandoned estate, along a deadly
mountain road, and into various other dark and dangerous
places. More than once she's lucky to get out alive.

Her relationship with Peter takes an interesting
turn, and the epilogue is a perfect touch.

4 out of 5 stars Literary Murder Strikes Again.......2006-05-03

Rogue's Gallery has just bought a farmhouse full of antiques. While Grace and Peter are sorting through the items, Grace stumbles on a letter referring to a previously undiscovered sonnet by Percy Shelley. Naturally, this peaks Grace's interest. Unfortunately, the letter was written during World War II, and the writer disappeared right after writing it. Further complicating the search, the antiques' owner demands them back because he didn't intend to sell them.

As if that weren't enough, Peter's past comes walking right into Rogue's Gallery. Hayri Kayaci was a guard in the Turkish prison where Peter spent some time. Now he's back, demanding an item Peter doesn't know how to locate and threatening to use the extradition papers he brought with him if Peter doesn't cooperate.

When Hayri is found murdered after a concert at the local park, Grace's relief for Peter is short lived. They are the top suspects in the case, and the new inspector in the village won't leave them alone. Meanwhile, Grace is hot on the trail of the missing sonnet, or at least piecing together the life of the man who discovered it sixty years before. If she can just figure out who is trying to kill her, life could be perfect.

Fans of the series will enjoy the latest entry. This story has several different mysteries tangled together, the sonnet, the murder, and the letter writer's disappearance. We even get a little more about Peter's past. The story is ultimately satisfying, but the pace is slightly off, slowing down at times in the middle. Overall, this is a minor complaint.

The characters continue to grow. The cautious, predictable Grace of book one is gone, and there are several times she does things I wouldn't have expected her to do, yet perfectly fit who she is becoming. On the other hand, Peter is becoming more cautious about life. These two are great for each other, and it's fun watching their relationship continue to evolve and grow.

Several characters from the previous entries make appearances, and new characters grace the page. They are all sharply drawn and memorable.

One of the charms of the book is the setting. I hadn't heard of the Lake District in England before starting this series, but Diana Killian makes the area come to life. Despite the murders, she makes it so inviting I would love to visit it some day.

If you enjoy the Romantic poets, this is a series not to be missed. Don't let the subject turn you away, however. These are great tales that will appeal to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A Book that gets you hooked.......2003-09-25

I recently have discovered the world of Holly Lisle. I have never read any of her books before, but within the first couple of pages, I was hooked.

There was so much detail that was sensory so that it appealed to all of the readers senses.

The characterization was so well planned and thought through I felt that I could picture any of the given characters at any moment during the book.

4 out of 5 stars Glenraven II.......2002-11-02

This book was fairly good. The action was appealing and the characters were pretty well-developed. But I have to say that if you hadn't read "Glenraven" first you would have been lost. This book deals with two seperate worlds: the one we're used to, and Glenraven. Glenraven is a little province in Italy that hasn't advanced along with the rest of the world- in fact, Glenraven appears to have hidden in a fold of time. Somehow creatures from Glenraven escape into the real world. They wreak havoc upon the already upside down world of Kate Beacham, an alleged witch. And everything turns into a whirlwind from there. The plot is pretty well-laid, and there are some intriguing tensions between characters that enhance the quality of the book. You want to keep reading to find out what happens next.

The only majorly disappointing thing I found in this book was the fact that MZB didn't really bring in characters from "Glenraven." She had developed some really strong personalities in JayJay and Matthiall. MZB only mentioned those two about two times, maybe three, in "In the Rift."

If you read "In the Rift" before "Glenraven" you should take the time to read "Glenraven." It'll clear up a lot of misconceptions you might have.

Sorry if I was confusing to you. "In the Rift" is a very good book. I just think maybe MZB should have tied in the characters more.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun, Quick Read.......2001-03-03

I enjoyed this book and breezed through it rather quickly. If you are looking for something in depth, try somewhere else. But if you're looking for something fun and light-hearted pick up this book. The main character, Kate Beacham, is a Wiccan who is being harassed and threatened by close-minded people in her small town. She was assaulted in the alley behind her work by three masked men, and when she came home she found her horse dead in the drive with a note through his head saying that she would be next. When she loaded her shotgun and went to bed, she found a Fodor's guide book to a place called Glenraven on her nightstand that she was positive she had not seen before. When she opened the book to take a look at it, words magically appeared in it telling her to get out of the house fast. Being a practitioner of magick, she obeyed the book and went outside just in time to see a large hole open in the air and group of people on horseback gallop out being pursued by a monster. After killing the thing with her shotgun, Kate finds these strangers in her yard and in her house without a way home. The book tells her that she has to help them, otherwise both their worlds are in jeopardy. She has to learn to trust and be trusted by these strangers from another world in order to save them all.

3 out of 5 stars decent but not spectacular.......2000-02-19

This isn't up to MZB's usual level of writing, but it's decent for a quick read (it was an airplane flight read for me). It suffers from being a bit preachy at times, from the 'good guys' being overly trusting and unable to look about critically, and from being somewhat unoriginal (too many 'alternate earth' books out there these days). On the positive side, the story moves along smoothly and the imagery and types of magic used/described are fairly original. -omar

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and unusual.......1999-04-09

This book is one of the best I have read. The plot is gripping. It keeps one at suspense till the end where one finds out who's the traitor. The story characters are unusual and the first I have come across. Read the book, you probably won't regret it.

        Book Description

"It's not often that composers inspire such funny surrealism. I enjoyed these very much."-Bernard MacLaverty

In these playful episodes, Ron Butlin weaves delightful fables based on the lives of the great composers and philosophers: Beethoven attempts pyramid selling; Haydn deliberates over the promotional boost he would receive by an appearance on Jerry Springer; Seneca tests the validity of stoicism by taking up residence in 21st century Edinburgh; and God entrusts Vivaldi with the gift of the number 3. Vivaldi and the Number 3 is a delightful mix of music and surreal humour by an acclaimed Scottish writer.

Ron Butlin was born in 1949 in Edinburgh, where he now lives. Having worked variously as a footman, a male model and a barnacle scraper on Thames barges, he has become one of Scotland's most acclaimed writers.

4 out of 5 stars Working my way through the book..........2007-06-15

Enjoying the book very much after receiving it as a present from my mother-in-law. My soon to be 11-month-old loves the recipes for carrots, broccoli, spinach... and I like the recipes, too-- so we share some of her veggies and add some of mom and dad's salmon or chicken, and everyone's at the table and happy. I'm also amazed at how much less expensive it is to prepare organic, healthy baby food.

5 out of 5 stars It depends on your P.O.V. ..........2007-03-11

Our goal was to raise our daughter to be a willing and adventurous eater, and to steer her clear of the usual all-American pitfalls of corn syrup, sugars, salts, etc that come with jarred baby food and formula (she never had any of that...perhaps a spoonful of rice cereal before we tossed it all out). This cookbook is very much about raising children in a foodie family, where the adults aren't eating processed foods, and are more likely to be getting fresh and rare items for the kitchen. The recipes themselves are almost immaterial - I think the real asset in this book is how beautifully it promotes a very European ethic in feeding your children properly, not bringing up picky eaters and spending too much money on "for kids" branded foods loaded with yech. The proof of its value to me (we got it as a gift) is that my daughter loved the dishes we prepared for her, without fail, and now, at 3 and a half, we get shocked looks from friends when we bring her to restaurants and others' houses for meals and she is happy to eat what the grown-ups are eating. LOVE IT!

        5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2005-12-01

why didn't i think to make such good food for my daughter BEFORE i read this book?! she is 9 mos. and every recipe i've tried from this book has been a hit with her and me and my husband. we can all sit down together for an enjoyable meal. what a treat!

to those who may find the ingredients elusive or expensive, simply substitute what you do have in season or available. modify the recipes as you need to, just remember, your baby wants to eat what you eat, and you will find these recipes DELICIOUS and easy.

4 out of 5 stars Pick and Choose.......2005-09-27

The recipies in "Feeding Baby" are hit and miss, because the ingredients are either too difficult to find, or too expensive for most people. The remaining recipies are incredibly tasty, however. I would recommend this book to compliment other baby food books and not as a stand-alone source.

        2 out of 5 stars honest? simple?.......2004-02-05

Bought this book on recommendation of pediatrician, to whom I confessed my basics-only pantry and dislike for cooking. She said this offered easy recipes using staples for ingredients. The authors call it "honest, simple" food.

"Green, brown, and pink lentils with apple-smoked bacon"?

"Grits and spinach with california cheddar"?

"White fish and basil in mashed potatoes"?

        "Shrimp and scallop risotto"?

"Braised pork with apricots and onions"?

"Orange almond cake with orange syrup and creme fraiche"?

"Asparagus and eight-minute egg with champagne vinaigrette"?

Gimme a break. I'll stick with Gerber and scrambled eggs and mushed-up peas and beans and mac & cheese. My take on "honest, simple" food. Champagne vinaigrette, sheesh.

I highly recommend this book. It provides everything that you need to know about your Cattle Dog. It has great detail/history, explanations, and it's easy to understand. I've followed the instructions and training tips that have been provided in this book to raise, and train my 12 week old Cattle Dog. The results have been outstanding. My puppy is responding just as the book stated that he would. Goodluck, it's worth your money!!

        5 out of 5 stars G'day, Mate..........2007-02-14

There he was. A cute little red and white puppy with big brown eyes. He melted my heart instantly. This was the first time in over twelve years that I had been completely bowled over by a dog. I had a dog, a beautiful spaniel/terrier mix that went by the name of Topper. She was my pride and joy and when I had to put her to sleep I really thought I was never going to be taken in by another dog until I saw him.

I really didn't ask any questions about this dog. I didn't even know it was a male until I got him home. We named him "Bongo" because before he took off running, he beat the ground with his paws. Speaking of paws, all my friends' looked at them and told me he was going to be huge. I refused to believe it. Not my baby. Maybe he would weigh 35...40 lbs tops.

Little did we know that our baby was part Mastadon. In less than aweek he grew three inches in all directions. The solid white parts were giving way to little red freckles, the angelic look he used to give me in the morning was becoming steadily more demonic and at the end of a month, we had something on our hands that was about as friendly as a Tazmanian Devil.

What the hell kind of dog is this, anyway?

We had a friend tell us that Bongo was an Australian Cattle Dog. Known for their inexhaustive energy stores. This dog was used to rounding up cattle and then after it rounded up a few hundred steers, it wanted to fetch a few dozen times and then maybe go on a brisk twenty mile hike. The dog was literally buzzing from morning to night.

And tempermental...oh man, you don't know the half of it. He would flip his dog dish and grumble when he was disatisfied, he'd yell at the cats and push them over with his extra large head, he'd try and knock my feet out from under me all while getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

We went to the bookstore one day and loaded up our arms with all kinds of reading materials. This book plainly says that the cattledog is a completely different kind of dog. No kidding. We even wanted Cesar Milan to pay a housecall. We were running out of patience, but it turned out, that's exactly what Bongo needed and to be honest, we did too. We took this little guy in not even knowing what to expect. It was kind of unfair to him. But I really was beginning to fall in love with him, even though a few times I wanted to strangle the thing.

Two years later, and after making this book (along with a few others) our Bible, we have a beautiful dog. He's kind, he's gentle, he's loaded with personality and he is just a great addition to our world. This book and its advice works, but you must work with your dog on a regular and consistent basis. You must be willing to know that yes, he is part of the family, but he is still a dog. He's not a human. He's a dog and he wants to be treated like one. He wants boundaries, discipline, affection, and most of all he wants you to notice him. This is not the kind of dog that should be left alone to his own devices, that is unless you want your backyard to look like the moon's surface, your garden hoses to be perforated, and your trees gnawed down to little nubs. You must be willing to give your heart, your soul, and your mind to this breed and I promise you, you will get something incredible in return.

I love my dog. In fact, when I take my dog out for a walk, I just cannot believe why other people would settle for such ugly stupid dogs when they could have something beautiful and wonderful like my beautiful Bongo-Boy.

        No, I'm not biased...why?

Get the dog you deserve with the help of this book!

We recently adopted a cattledog mix, going in blind, knowing nothing about the breed. This book was an excellent eye opener and helped overcome a lot of obstacles that may have otherwise caused us to reconsider our choice of puppy.

5 out of 5 stars Happy ACD Owner in Alaska.......1999-12-08

Narelle has done a wonderful job with this book, updating the older version with new photos and relevant information. The book is filled with wonderful pictures of many Australian Cattle Dogs and puppies and shows them herding, playing, sleeping, in the show ring, and doing agility and obedience work. I particularly love the picture of a wonderful blue cattledog named Darcy sleeping on the couch with one of her owners, Rick Williams, on page 130! Although Australian Cattle Dogs are not a breed for everyone because of their high energy level and high intellengence coupled with the need to herd things, the book gives a well-rounded view of the breed. Really a fun book and highly reccomended!

2 out of 5 stars Good pictures, wide range of tools, some misinformation.......1998-09-05

I think the breadth of the information in this book is what causes the problems. It attempts to cover a wide range of antique tools according to the profession of the user. On this basis, it is a rather remarkable collection of widely varying information on lots of old tools and their uses. The problem is that most of the information appears to have come from helpful dealers and passers-by, not necessarily experts. This is alluded to in the forward, so there is no deliberate attempt to claim otherwise. These helpful people were not necessarily knowledgable as shown by incorrect naming and descriptions on some items. The included price guides also varied all over the map from too cheap to too expensive. In no cases were maker names mentioned along with the pricing which makes them pretty much useless. I was particularly interested in this book for the woodworking section which is only barely touched upon given the wide subject material and limited space. I did learn the names of lots of esoteric stuff that I did not know about before.

            5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended........2006-08-13

I've been quilting for over 30 years and have an embarassing number of quilt books, but this one is a great addition to my collection. This book has me eager to make a number of the quilts inside.

As the title suggests, these are paper pieced quilts. Included are some pattern pages which may be photocopied to be the paper foundation for piecing. Patterns include Mariner's Compass, Log Cabin, Pickle Dish, Wedding Ring, Flying Geese and Fan, among others. With the advent of rotary cutting, this method seems unnecessary for something simple like the Log Cabin pattern, but using it for the other patterns greatly improves the accuracy of my piecing and using this for the Wedding Ring is truly innovative and something I am eager to try. In addition to the instructions which are clear and well-illustrated, there are over twenty full pages of color pictures which supply inspiration to go along wtih the information within these pages.

My only very small complaint is that there are several Mariner's Compass blocks in the Gallery section that go to a central point in the center of the square--a very engaging square, but the you won't find the instructions here. Instead you find compass blocks with the circle center, which in all fairness, is the square pictured most often in these pages.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent use of contemporary methods for traditional design.......1998-02-20

I have enjoyed working with this book. The paper foundations included are much easier to work with than if they were just printed on the book's pages. I did the Double Wedding Ring and the results were teriffic! This is paper piecing for people who are committed to doing traditional work with new methods, and it makes sense to combine the techniques. I have recommended it to my advanced students. Not for beginners! I only wish I hadn't forgotten who I loaned this book to, as now I have to buy another copy!

As far as I know, this is the only adult biography of Bessie Coleman, the pioneer African-American aviatrix. Rich notes that she was hampered by a lack of personal material, but has none the less produced a fascinating biography. Coleman, a woman of modest background, overcame barriers of wealth, race and gender. A national celebrity, especially among Blacks, she was even able to attract the attention of white Americans. Through her airshows and lectures, and against a great deal of hostility, she was a tireless campaigner for equality for both sex and gender. Mae Jemison, the first African-American female astronaut has written an afterword. For some reason, this is after the notes and bibliography, but before the index.

There are a variety of biographies of Coleman aimed at various ages of children. While reading this, I also read Bessie Coleman; first Black Woman Pilot by Connie Plantz. This is of course the most detailed and contains a considerable amount of historical and contextual information. Both this and Plantz's book are lavishly illustrated, happily with a number of different pictures, and I recommend both to anyone interested in visual information.

The book has copious notes, a lengthy bibliography and an index.
