Book Description
Murder runs deep in a thrilling new series.
An Underwater Investigation featuring C.S.I. diver Hannah Sampson.
Summoned to the sun-drenched beaches of the British Virgin Islands, Hannah Sampson is fully prepared to face unknowable dangers beneath the crystal-clear waters of an idyllic paradise. But the possibility of murder runs deeper and darker than the sea itself. Her police commissioner's son-an expert diver and researcher-was found dead, pinned under the submerged wreckage of a cargo ship. Whatever the victim was looking for, he found.
Whatever he found was the death of him. Now Hannah must discover for herself what lies beneath-a secret that could take Hannah's breath away.

Excellent.......2007-05-13
This author is WODERFUL and I only wish she'd write more books - I've now read her entire series!
The Best in a Long While.......2006-09-09
This is the best book I've read in a long while! Brandt writes with knowledge and interest about scuba diving. You don't have to be a diver to enjoy this book. A must for any fan of mysteries. I plan on reading all in the series
Swimming with the Dead is lively.......2006-03-22
As a former deputy sheriff, I rarely read crime fiction, but as a body recovery diver I found this book intriguing. The author has captured the danger of this work, and uses it as the basis for a well-written novel. The heroine is made real as the story unfolds, with enough twists and dead-ends to cause a serious loss of sleep.
I have read her second book as well, and it to is awesome.
Buy them at the same time or you will hate yourseld.
Swimming with the Dead.......2005-06-25
If you, like me, are hooked on diving, then this mystry will reel you in. The lead character is facinating with an equally facinating occupation. You'll enjoy all its facets: danger, romance, excitement. As a book, you'll read to the end; as a series, you'll await each new installment.
Excellent start to the series..........2005-05-26
In my quest to find new authors to fill my insatiable appetite for mystery novels, I am delighted to give Kathy Brandt a permanent place in my library. Her experience with the subject matter is evident in her narrative, while her characters are fully developed. If you like underwater mysteries with a strong sense of place, you'll enjoy this book.
Book Description
When the Capolanian government wanted commemorative stamps and postcards created in honor of their 650th anniversary, they turned, quite naturally, to artist and writer Nick Bantock. Who better to capture the mythical nation's enigmatic spirit? The result is a sumptuous treasure box of history, legend, and fantasy. Inside, the curious will find the very postcards and stamps Mr. Bantock created for this commission, along with a book -- not much larger than a passport -- in which he introduces the history, philosophy, customs, and traditions of this mysterious nomadic tribe.

wonderful artbox.......2002-11-29
this is a wonderful artbox. the postcards and the stampsheet make it even more beautiful. love the story as well.i am planning to give this as a xmas gift to my friends.
Do you prefer story or art?.......2001-06-29
This artbox is rather hard to rate. The box is beautifully presented; 15 postcards and a small sheet with two stamps are gently tied on the inside. Facing them is a little booklet in a slip-case. The art and presentation deserves a five-star rating. As usual, Bantock's collage work is amazing. However, the story is underdeveloped and much too short. To say that it is a 48 page book is highly misleading. It has about the same amount of text as a travel brochure, and I would give it one star. But if you enjoy Bantock, why not go for it?
This is not your typical story.......2000-01-05
After reading the reviews available for this title, I decided to pass on this book when it first came out. However, when I received it as a gift this past Xmas, I felt extremely foolish for allowing others to influence my decisions.
Nick Bantock is my favorite of all modern authors because, after reading his work, I always feel a liberation from the "face value" of things, or ordinary-ness, and a return to thinking of things in terms of the plausibly extraordinary.
"Capolan" is a superb vehicle for inducing this sort of thinking, and I know I will be using it often as the mental jump-start I occasionally need to avoid "coloring within the lines."
"Yeah, yeah...but is it any good?" I've heard several people ask since I read this book.
Well, that depends on whether you can appreciate things that could be, but more than likely aren't, yet still should be. Confused? Then buy the book and discover for yourself. For me, Bantock's books have always been about suspending one's disbelief from the rafters until it's blue and quivering, and "Capolan" is no exception. Thus, it's a wonderful book for me, and it's been a wonderful book for others to whom I've gifted it.
Buy it for the pictures.......1999-04-06
Nick Bantock does not refer to himself as much a writer as a creative artist. This is reflected in the Capolan set.
The art is excellent and pure Bantock: colorful, expressive, off-center, collage-ish. The book is not good, though. The book tries to be pure Bantock - that is, meditiative, somewhat sad but fulfilled, and quietly anti-commercialist. However, it tries too hard. Artists agree that art should make the unfamiliar familiar, or the familiar unfamiliar. I believe Griffin and Sabine made Bantock's unfamiliar concepts familiar because of the familiar root - correspondence - combined with the rich, concrete detail rooted in basic human emotions. Capolan fails, though. Although the concept of a nomad nation is known to westerners, it is not familiar, and it is not made familiar since there are few rich, familiar details. Unless you are a Bantock devotee or an art lover, skip this one over.
Interesting concept, but where's the story?.......1998-08-06
Nick Bantock has come up with a very innovative idea -- make a commemorative souvenir for the anniversary of a nation that has chosen not to exist. I have to admit, I really like the concept, but I was hoping for more of a story than a little 40-page booklet (which, in reality, is not much more than a pamphlet) explaining the heritage of these people. There's such a rich story waiting to come out, and all Bantock does is scratch the surface. I would have loved to find out more, but there's nothing else but stamps and postcards from which I could glean information. I've got almost all of Bantock's other material, and I have to say that, while it's probably one of the most visually satisfying works, it's one of the least satisfying as far as storyline goes. It's a good addition for an avid Bantock collector, but if you're looking to begin a love affair with his work, start with The Venetian's Wife or the Griffin and Sabine Trilogy.

Brutally aweful.......2006-10-03
The Hammer Lane is the relaunch that ruined the Ghost Rider series for years. The story lacks any depth, is just stupid and hard to follow. The art is painful to look at. I thought that perhaps this Ghost Rider series was meant to appeal to 7 year olds but when I showed it to my nephew he laughed and tore the comic to shreds.
Thankfully, the most recent relaunch of Ghost Rider by Garth Ennis features the Ghost Rider as Hell's bounty hunter with more of a gritty, serious story line and excellent art. This is a story and art much more deserving of this aewsome yet underdeveloped Marvel icon.
Disappointing, lame Ghost Rider re-launch.......2005-09-19
Undoubtadly one of the just plain coolest looking characters in Marvel's who stable is Ghost Rider, but sadly, the stories involving the character haven't been anything too special. This TPB finds original former Ghost Rider Johnny Blaze once again fused with the Spirit of Vengeance to allow him to become the flame skulled, motorcycle riding, demonic hero. Sadly though, the Hammer Lane isn't what Ghost Rider fans had been looking for, and the story by Devin Grayson (Black Widow, Batman: War Games) is by far the worst she has ever written. And then, there is the art. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the art (I can't remember the guy's name, honestly) is loaded with obscure looking character models and cartoony graphics. Ghost Rider doesn't look fearsome here, he looks like a cartoon. Do yourself a favor, if you're a Ghost Rider fan, skip this, and instead check out the Essential Ghost Rider TPB, or Howard Mackie's 90's re-launch that wasn't that bad. And while you're at it, be sure to check out Preacher creator and Punisher writer Garth Ennis' current re-launch of the character, which actually manages to take Ghost Rider back to his roots.
Trash Rider.......2004-04-26
A year ago in less than a week I read more than 30 issues of the second collection of Ghost Rider, even when I had read at least one comic of every hero of marvel, the art, the script of Ghost Rider was incredible. But all change with this last collection the magic is gone, the art is trash, the script has almost nothing to do with the old great stories, and the new John Blaze is pathetic, it don't deserve be part of the Marvel Knights
Like all the Marvel Knights Series.. not so good..........2002-07-28
When you had read the original Ghost Rider, The Punisher and the others characters who had been "re-visited" or "re-make" by the Marvel Knights Series you feel it's not the same.. The plot is good, but the graphics presents the Ghost Rider like a cartoon very funny not like the Spirit of Vengeance that is...
Talks about a Johnny Blaze who works in a cubicle and wants to be free or the Ghost Rider...
If you are a Spirit of Vengeance, better buy "Ride of the Midnight Sons" or "Ghost Rider Resurrected"...

Okay.......2007-07-12
I just bought an espresso machine, because I was spending more money on starbucks and dunkin donuts than I do on cigarettes... So, got the machine used coarsly ground beans, and I got the weakest shot of espresso ever... I brewed with a ese cert pod and the espresso was so yummy, thought to myself i wonder why that is... so i broke open the pod and dicovered OHHHHHHHH, i'm supposed to have these beans ground as fine as beach sand... so once i got all that figured out, i was thinking whats the differance between a latte and a cappuccino? and just generally wondering what kind of recipes i could make with the espresso... went to B&N this was the only book they had, so i bought it... read the two maybe three pages of recipes that i was curious about and the book sat on my counter next to the espresso machine for a few weeks untouched...
I'm not saying that i wasted my money on the book, i wanted a book now! and bought the book, learned the three things i could've just searched online for.... now i'm going to look for a espresso book with more recipes because i'm so addicted to espresso now... it's 90-95% cheaper than going to shops and buying coffee...... MMMMM latte.....
Pretty disappointed in this book........2007-03-28
There is only one recipe for espresso drinks. There are other recipes for drinks with brewed coffee, but they have ingredients that most people do not normally keep in their house. The sections on the history of coffee and some tips on how to make a better coffee/espresso, are pretty good. If you are looking for some recipes for some different drinks, this is definately not the book you are wanting. I'm going to keep the book only because I don't want to go through the hassle of returning it, but I will not be recommending it to anyone to buy.
It's ok.......2007-03-11
I'd hoped there'd been more recipes. This book gives very basic information and shows little creativity. Explore further if you're wanting a real recipe book to make flavored coffees.
Disappointing..........2005-11-20
After purchasing my Nespresso machine I enjoyed churning out Gingerbread lattes from an online recipe. My daughter requested a turtle latte and I decided a few fun espresso recipes would be great!
So I went in search of the perfect coffee drinks book. Sadly, this was not it. This was very disappointing. The espresso section was a few brief pages AND did not really include any speciality recipes.
Not a good choice for good coffee drinks.
A history / cultural lesson.......2005-09-19
If you want to know all about the culture and art of coffee making then buy this book. If you want a bit of help to impress your friends than this is not the book.
Book Description
Safe riding is correct riding. That's Jan Dawson's motto, and it's the philosophy behind her book, Teaching Safe Horsemanship. Dawson's goal is to provide both English and Western riding instructors with an effective and safe teaching program. She explains how to assess a horse's particular characteristics in order to weed out potentially dangerous animals. She also offers guidelines for assessing instructors and students, including what makes a good instructor and what attitudes can get in the way of learning proper horsemanship. Since 80 percent of all accidents involve falls due to loss of balance, Dawson identifies the techniques that ensure that a horse and rider are in proper balance. Finally, since she is a lawyer as well as a riding instructor, Dawson includes a chapter on securing useful liability forms, what insurance coverage does and does not do, and how to handle accidents and lawsuits. Dawson and her husband teach the only equine law course taught at a law school in the United States.
Customer Reviews:
Worthwhile Read!.......2007-08-06
This is the first book I read when I decided to begin giving lessons. The format is easy to read and the content is exactly what I was looking for. This book reminds you of all of the little things (especially safety related actions) that seasoned horse people know and perform out of habit but might forget to explain to a beginner. It also lines up about 16 lesson plans from ground safety up through canter lessons. It provides some school figures and exercises/stretches to enhance every lesson. If you are thinking about giving lessons, this book is a logical place to start and a must for your initial library.
a must have in the horsemanship world.......2007-03-19
this book is a great book. i would highly reccommend it to anyone who has or is thinking about owning a horse/s. it gives the basics of riding from the ground up. even for the experienced rider/owner/trainer i think it is great, simply because it will remind you of the "little things" we tend to miss when teaching. i like that it is simple and easy to read, i would also recommend it to my students to read as well, since they may find something that i may have forgotten and it would give them the oppertunity to ask me questions - something everyone could learn from.
Common sense information well presented.......2005-09-25
There's no quick fix to teaching anyone to ride and this book can work for any age. Jan presented the same information throughout the book in varying detail to cater to the individual rider's experience and skill level. Even though some of the information might seem obvious, the idea of teaching a skill is to explain the obvious to someone who won't think it's obvious to them! It is great for those who care about their students and want the best and safest (safety issues discussed frequently) experience.
basics basics basics.......2003-03-28
A solid little book about riding instruction. The whole volume puts a lot of emphasis on being safe around horses (as indeed the title suggests), it stresses basic safety rules and then devotes an appendix section on dealing with accidents and lawsuits. One great feature of this book are the review questions at the end of each chapter. I appreciate equestrian texts with that type of feature.
A must for new and experienced instructors.......1999-10-19
Jan Dawson provides great information on all aspects of a riding program. The sections on lesson plans, dealing with accidents and lawsuits, and safe school horses will be useful for both instructor and clientele in evaluating their current situation.
Book Description
Fishing continues to be one of the top outdoor pastimes, and so is collecting the rods, reels, lures, decoys, accessories, and artwork that connect today's anglers with anglers of past generations.
"Classic Fishing Lures and Tackle" is an entertaining general overview of the vast variety of fishing gear and memorabilia for all types of fishing. Sorenson provides historical background on the origins and evolution of fishing gear, the inventors of particular pieces, and the classic companies that produced them, including the classic manufacturers Heddon, Pflueger, Shakespeare, South Bend, and Orvis. Plus, he offers tips on which items are highly collectible, as well as advice on where to find them.
Complementing Sorenson's easy-to-read text are Howard Lambert's intricate photographic stills, which raise the presentation of such items to an art form. Period ads, illustrations, and period brochures and literature complete this look at this popular hobby.

Book Description
The drawings that make up Alain Sachas's Jurassic Pork II are done at 12 x 18 inches, then, at exhibition time, blown up to poster size and glued to museum walls. They may, however, be best suited to book form, to life as a comic. As the series opens, our cat hero--and one French critic has suggested Sachas's name be heard "ses chats," or "his cats"--is setting off on the hunt for the big pig, Jurassic Pork. In encountering his id in the woods, he meets Salvador Dali, Jacques Lacan, and a tribe of Amazons in cat-woman style pig suits--or is that a dream? By the time he unwittingly takes refuge at Nymph Academy, where the students really do dress up as his quarry and give him a run for his money, he's ready to go home. Readers, on the other hand, will be ready to write to the artist requesting Jurassic Pork III.

Book Description
Timothy Isaiah "Longhair Jim" Courtright operated on both sides of the law and became a legend in his lifetime and after his death. One of the most colorful characters from the wild and woolly days of Fort Worth's Hell's Half Acre, Courtright was at various times city marshal, deputy sheriff, deputy U.S. marshal, private detective, hired killer, and racketeer. Today, he is almost forgotten, either as a gunfighter or a lawman, except in Fort Worth.
Little is known about Courtright's early life, though he apparently served in the Union army during the Civil War. But when he arrived in the West, Courtright seemed to attract trouble. He was involved in a shootout during the 1886 railroad strikes and was accused of murder in New Mexico. Deputies were sent to Fort Worth to escort him to New Mexico to stand trial. His escape from them, complete with guns hidden under a restaurant table, is one of Fort Worth's most colorful stories. Finally, he was killed in a shootout that he apparently provoked with gambler and gunman Luke Short. To this day nobody is sure what provoked that feud, but Courtright was honored with the longest funeral procession Fort Worth had ever seen.
The myth of Courtright as legendary gunfighter was built in two previous biographies--one by a novelist and the other by a Franciscan priest. After exhaustive research into contemporary newspapers and other accounts and close study of the previous two books, historian Robert K. DeArment deconstructs the myth of Longhair Jim and reconstructs the gunfighter as a real human being, complex, flawed, often courageous, usually both honorable and dishonorable.
This book is a must for all those interested in the legends of the West, its lawmen, and its outlaws.
Customer Reviews:
a man like few others.......2004-12-18
Of the many colorful characters who walked the dusty streets of Fort Worth's Hell's Half Acre, few equal the enigmatic Jim Courtright. Movies would have us believe that the good guys wore white hats and the bad guys black. Courtright wore both. He was by turns city marshal, deputy sheriff, deputy U.S. Marshall, private detective, hired gun, and racketeer.
According to biographer DeArment there's not much known about Courtright's childhood or youth. It's believed he was a Union soldier during the Civil War, and law abiding. But things changed after the great battle when he moved to the West.
During the railroad strikes in 1886 he found himself in a shootout, and accusers in New Mexico said he was a murderer. Deputies were dispatched to Fort Worth to bring Courtright back to New Mexico to stand trial. How he eluded them is the stuff of legend.
Death came to Courtright during a shootout with gambler Luke Short. Some say that Courtright provoked Short but there is no verifiable data concerning their fight. What is known is that Courtright was evidently esteemed by the townspeople because he had the longest funeral procession Fort Worth had seen.
The life of Courtright, both myth and reality, may be found in two early biographies. Historian DeArment studied these as well as contemporary newspapers and other accounts in order to present his version of the lawman/outlaw's life. In large part he takes the myth apart and then presents a very human Courtright - warts and all.
Those with an interest in the early West and gunfighters in particular will find much to enjoy in this exhaustively researched portrait of a man like few others.

In Every Life Time A Legend Is Born.......2004-09-12
In every life time it seems a legend is born and in the town of Fort Worth, Longhair Jim made his way through the streets. Longhair Jim was the name people called him, but by birth his name was Timothy Isaiah Courtright. Not a lot was known about Timothy's early years, the years when he was only known as Timothy Isaiah Courtright. That all changed, it seemed that Forth Worth had another name given to the town, Hell's Half Acre a name that was used for the type of town it was in the good old days just like the name given to Courtright, Longhair Jim. It seems that Longhair Jim worked bout sides of the law, save a few people from the outlaws to burying a few when they got in Longhair Jims way of making money. It seems that Longhair Jim got in little trouble down New Mexico way. Some said he murdered a man and the law came to town one day to take him back to New Mexico for the crime he was accused of. The New Mexico lawmen had their hands full with Longhair Jim, he wasn't going back, and he escaped pulling a gun out from its hiding place under the Restaurant table. Courtright lived and died by the gun and had one of the largest funeral processions in the history of Fort Worth. If you like stories of the old west, then you will love this story. The old west is like a coloring book, some pages colored very well while others just seem to passed over. Don't find yourself passing over these pages of the old west.
