Named 1998 Grand Master by Mystery Writers of America, Elizabeth Peters is also a doctor of Egyptology whose mysteries have submerged readers in the vivid turn-of-the-century world of Amelia Peabody. In The Ape Who Guards the Balance Peters captures the immediacy of uncovering a new Egyptian tomb within the context of a tightly plotted murder investigation involving the entire Emerson Peabody clan. The characters, including Amelia's husband, Radcliffe Emerson, and her gifted son, Ramses, are meticulously drawn. As in previous novels the dialogue is reminiscent of The Thin Man. When a man calls out to passing suffragettes, "You ought to be 'ome washin' your 'usband's trousers!" Ramses shoots back, "I assure you, sir, the lady's trousers are not in such sore need of laundering as your own." Peters also toys with differing narrative perspectives, and Ramses emerges as a possible successor to his mother's legacy of crime solving.

The Ape Who Guards the Balance begins in 1907 in England where Amelia is attending a suffragettes' rally outside the home of Mr. Geoffrey Romer of the House of Commons. It seems Romer is one of the few remaining private collectors of Egyptian antiquities, and a series of bizarre events at the protest soon embroil Amelia in grave personal danger. Suspecting that the Master Criminal, Sethos, is behind their problems, the Emerson Peabodys hasten to Egypt to continue their studies in the Valley of Kings where they soon acquire a papyrus of the Book of the Dead. As with past seasons, however, their archaeological expedition is interrupted. The murdered body of a woman is found in the Nile. Ramses, Radcliffe, and Amelia all have their theories as to the origin of the crime, but their own lives might soon be at stake if the cult of Thoth and their ancient book is, indeed, involved.

Other Peabody mysteries include Seeing a Large Cat, The Hippopotamus Pool, The Snake, the Crocodile, and the Dog, The Deeds of the Disturber, Lion in the Valley, The Curse of the Pharaohs, and Crocodile on the Sandbank. --Patrick O'Kelley

5 out of 5 stars The Tenth Book in the Series.......2007-06-27

Elizabeth Peters was born and brought up in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago's famed Oriental Institute. Peters was named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998. She lives in a historic farmhouse in western Maryland.

The Amelia Peabody books may or may not be an acquired taste, personally I love them. They are set in Victorian times when there were still very strict rules of etiquette and polite behaviour was the norm. Although most of the books are set in Egypt, in the desert under very trying conditions and extremely hot weather the `English' way of life was still expected to be adhered to, sometimes with quite hilarious consequences.

Amelia Peabody is Elizabeth Peters' best loved and brilliant creation, a thoroughly Victorian feminist who takes the stuffy world of archaeology by storm with her no nonsense dress sense and forthright opinions.

The Peabody-Emerson clan are not particularly flavour of the month with the Egyptian authorities, as a result of Emerson's forthright views and temper to boot. Thus the prospect of the 1907 season seems fairly dull. They are been given the franchise to examine only the most boring tombs in the Valley of the Kings, places that other excavators cannot be bothered with. Then while in Cairo the younger members of the family purchase a mint condition papyrus of the famous Book of the Dead and thus begins a new adventure in the world of antiquity. Suddenly the season turns from dull to exciting as Amelia and her family try to unravel another mystery.

This entire series should carry a warning label--"Could Cause Serious Dependence." Impossible to put one down without reaching for the next.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant, but we've seen it all before........2005-08-04

I have long been a fan of Elizabeth Peters' novels, especially the Amelia Peabody series. However, though a fan I must admit that there are times when the novels become tiresome. Perhaps it is the locale or the confined world of Egyptian archaeology, but there is a similarity between most of the novels that makes it difficult to keep the plots separate. I always have, for example, trouble distinguishing The Hippopotamus Pool and Seeing A Large Cat. The Ape Who Guards The Balance is somewhat like the other two novels mentioned. The Peabody family has a "mystery" enemy who is out to do them harm. We go through a series of trips back and forth between Luxor and the Valley Of The Kings stopping at the same hotels, tombs, and scenes that we have "visited" on countless other occasions. The drama never gets too high and perilous, and difficult situations seem to resolve themselves with a lack of difficulty.

So having said this, why do I give this 3 stars? It is simply because it is such a pleasant read. This is true for most of the series. Though the books have murder, and mayhem in them, it is, for the most part, done in such a civilized, or charming turn-of-the-century, old-fashioned manner, that it is hard to actually feel much suspense. The pleasure of these novels, instead comes from the family feel of them. When you pick up a new Peabody story, you now that you will be visiting with the colorful and admirable Peabody family in a well-written story filled with some mystery, some hilarious moments, and an always colorful cast of characters.

4 out of 5 stars A worthy entry in the Amelia Peabody series!.......2005-05-17

This book is enjoyable and fun like the rest in this wonderful series, but it does not do well as a "stand-alone" novel. There are too many things that have gone on in previous books that keep cropping up in this one for someone who is new to the series to be able to understand and to enjoy the book as it should be enjoyed. This is a wonderful series and each of the books in it are great in their own right, but in order to be fully appreciated, the series should be read as a series and in order. This allows for the maximum enjoyment of each installment. That way the reader can see the relationship between Amelia and her Emerson develop, they can watch the children as they grow up, and understand each of these characters fully. Besides, it's such great fun to read these books. I can always hardly wait for the next one. This book was set in 1907, and it takes place in The Valley of Kings where Amelia and Emerson have been excavating for a number of seasons already. The mystery and the adventure are exciting, and we see some of the Emersons' previous villains appear in this one. What I really enjoyed though was Ramses and seeing the man he has become. He is going to be a formidable presence in upcoming books.

3 out of 5 stars Falters A Bit.......2005-03-14

While I enjoyed this book, I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous novel, Seeing a Large Cat. First the story: it was intersting to say the least. This time around there is much more of a dangerous and violent tone to the novel and the ending, sad and heart-wrenching, came out of nowhere. However, it lacked much of the fun and wonder of previous novels. Once again, the Emersons are stuck with boring tombs while others get the opportunity the make new discoveries, but I guess the author does have to stick with acknowledged history. After all, there were no Emersons discovering these great tombs. What left me cold this time around was the family dynamic, usually a major positive for me. Nearly everyone in the family takes a disrespectful and condescending tone with Amelia, the children seemed to have turned into disrespectful adults (especially Nefret), and the soap opera quality melodrama became grating far too often. Yes, I know these are fictional characters, but I'm 10 books into this series so forgive me if I've become a little invested in them. Most galling of all was the attitude of cold-hearted disrespect and condescension directed by Ramses towards his mother. This development, which has only worsened since the last book, has been an unwelcome. At times, the character seems to take pleasure in showing up his mother, and even more astonishing is the complete lack of respect shown by him towards his father. Nefret is even worse. Her willingness to act underhandedly, hatefully, and in a manipulative manner with a family who took her in when she had no one was also a disappointing chacter development. On a brighter note, it was great to have Walter and Evelyn back in Egypt with the rest of the Emersons, and Lia (providing she matures a bit more) may turn out to be great new addition to the adventures. Again, I'm allowing these characters to become too much a part of me, but then that's the hallmark of a great story and autor. I'll let it go now and move on to the next book.

4 out of 5 stars Cook's first published series novel, enjoyable with better to come.......2006-07-15

having just reread this novel, I am inclined to find it very enjoyable but puzzling in the lack of a central protagonist. Major focus of the story is on varthlokkur, nepanthe and mocker, with secondary interest in the storm kings, the old man, haroun, ragnarson, and ragnarson's associates. Ragnarson's future prominance is not visible here.

While I am unsympathetic to varthlokkur's prolonged magically-certified obsession with nepanthe, he is a sympathetic character. The old man and the star rider both bring more questions than answers, a few of which might be answered later. I think there is some dilution of impact of the story with so little time being given to any major character...

This story is the first in 7 published novels in the dread empire series, and here you can already see cook's gritty, realistic depiction of human conversation, motivation, and failibility. The only quibble may be the almost transparent reconciliation of the storm kings and haroun and co.

It is a very enjoyable read, well worth ordering used or buying as the omnibus book 'a cruel wind.' Glen cook can present a tale in this form so brutally realistic and pragmatic that you may find other contemporary fantasy seeming rather superficial or artificial.

2 out of 5 stars A future great, still looking for his voice.......2003-04-13

OK, I'm giving this book two stars, and by that act paying a huge
compliment to Glen Cook. Read on.

On its own merits, this book might actually deserve three or even
four stars. It's way better than 90% of the hackjob fantasy
novels out there, and beats the dogsnot out of anything by
J.K. Rowling. But my problem is this: when I mention to longtime
Cook fans that the Black Company books rock from top to bottom and
are among my very favorite novels, they invariably say, "Well,
if you like Black Company, you'll *love* Dread Empire." So I
went out and tracked down the whole Dread Empire series, and with
my first taste, I can definitively say that they do *not* approach
the standard set (retroactively) by the Black Company books,
      or by the TunFaire stories.

In "A Shadow of All Night Falling", we seem to be seeing a
young Glen Cook searching for his narrative voice. That voice
is strong and compelling in all the Black Company books. In
SoANF, it's vague and scattered. The narrative viewpoint moves
around a lot, and it's hard to get a feel for any of the
characters. So from my point of view, this book is an interesting read, but
primarily in that it gives me a new perspective on Mr. Cook's body of work.
The good news is that as the novel progressed, I could see the
author gaining his footing; the last fifty pages or so were nearly
up to snuff. This bodes well for the rest of the series.

      4 out of 5 stars A very good start.......1997-10-20

This starts the Dread Empire series simply, introducing the characters who will grow and change in the following books. It is enjoyable, but the rest are more so. Still, it is necessary to read it, to make sense of the whole.

Centauri Shock follows the journey of a young man's struggle for survival in the 24th century, long after the countries of Earth had settled their petty differences and united into one peaceful government. This unity propelled the human race beyond the boundaries of Earth, enabling them to colonize space as far as the Centauri System-a series of frontier-like planets resembling the lawlessness of the American Wild West mixed with the exotic beauty of Ancient Rome. The main character, Duke, is sentenced to life with hard labor and expects to be imprisoned elsewhere on Earth. Drugged and forced into an involuntary stasis, he awakens in the Centauri System on the other side of The Void-a vast expanse of space that divides humanity's two diverse civilizations. Duke's quest for freedom begins after realizing that he's been sold into slavery, over four light years from home.

"I cook for flavor," says Italian cooking authority Marcella Hazan in Marcella Says..., a gathering of her culinary wisdom with 120 recipes. "Like truth, [flavor] needs no embellishment." Fans of Hazan's marvelous cookbooks, including Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking and Marcella Cucina, will recognize in this declaration her credo--that food is best when it tastes fully of itself. To help readers achieve this result, Marcella Says... includes a "master-class" chapter that culls a lifetime of Hazan's cooking smarts, presented in the likes of "When Is it Done" (cook vegetables all the way to tenderness, she advises); "How to Cook a Pasta Sauce" (use a saucepan for long-simmering sauces, a skillet for the rapid reduction fresh sauces require); and "Herbs, Garlic, Spices, Salt, and the Pursuit of Flavor" (herbs and condiments never compensate for undersalting).

These explorations are the heart of the book, but Hazan also supplies typically attractive, easily accomplished recipes, such as Rapini and Butternut Squash Soup, Spaghetti "Rotolo" with Zucchini and Bacon, Fish Fillets Marinated and Baked with Lemon and Thyme, and Bread Pudding with Chocolate and Apples--all written with her characteristic attention to detail. Her formulas also offer asides to help readers with technical and other matters. And, of course, there is Hazan's voice, her writerly acumen. This isn't icing on the cake, but a matter of making what is understood by the author best understood by her readers. Recipes aside, Hazan's graceful thoroughness is why her cookbooks are so beloved--and so often consulted--by cooks of all caliber. --Arthur Boehm

          Book Description

Marcella Hazan is acclaimed for her trailblazing cookbooks, but first and foremost she is a teacher. From cooking classes held in her small New York City apartment kitchen in the 1960s to the avidly sought after Master Classes she led in her beautiful Venice home, Marcella has been the authoritative guide to Italian cooking.

This much-anticipated follow-up to Marcella Cucina offers 100 new tantalizing recipes that bring Marcella's warm, conversational, and illuminating teachings into home kitchens everywhere. The legendary author and cooking teacher shares invaluable lessons in Italian cooking, including mastering traditional techniques, selecting and using ingredients, and planning and preparing complete Italian menus. Drawing on her unique ability to present each recipe as a narrative with subplots, characters, and rich history, Marcella demonstrates just how many delicious new stories she still has to tell.

4 out of 5 stars two words: Sicilian Pesto.......2007-09-03

This Summer, for my family I made Marcella's recipe for Sicilian Pesto from this book. I followed the recipe to the letter, and my family was blown away. It was so delicious, so nuanced, and surprising (you think, pesto, I know pesto. well guess again). Can't wait to try more of these recipes and have everyone think I'm a genius.

4 out of 5 stars Some mistakes so........2006-04-25

I made the puree of fava beans with rapini. The recipe said simmer 1 lb rapini in 4c water. I think she meant 4 quarts. Same night, lamb shanks with savoy cabbage. "Cook the shanks about one hour or until meat falling off bones" and "serve immediately". (paraphrasing). The braising took over two hours, and tasted better the next day. When I make it again (and I will), I'll cook it a day ahead and reheat.

On the other hand, both were excellent and excellent together. I'm just going to trust my instincts about off-sounding details.

4 out of 5 stars Not her best but...........2005-08-05

Not her best book, but egads! It's Marcella. Nearly on the same plane as Julia! Some wonderful recipes here.

Sounds like Mr. Newman is kinda green if he can't handle simple de-glazing. For him, I suggest The Joy of Cooking.

3 out of 5 stars Good idea but poorly executed..........2005-05-10

The first 90 pages or so are filled with good information that make the purchase worthwhile. The remainder feels like it was put together in a hurry.

Listed in the middle of the ingredients list is the equipment you'll need. That's a bit clumsy and awkward.

The photos (none are of dishes, all are of Marcella either alone or with her classes) are fuzzy. None serve any purpose, and in a few, such as the one on page 161, she does not look like she is in good health.

As for the recipes they are a bit of a disappointment, the homemade pasta and gnocchi chapter, for example, offers just one gnocchi recipe with no additional instructions for making a quality gnocchi. More attention is given to making bread crumbs than what makes for a good gnocchi.

This book was a good idea, but after page 90 it is poorly executed.

          2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2005-03-09

I made my first recipe from this book. Fresh Tuna and Zucchini Pasta Sauce. It called for quick sauteeing the tuna in hot olive oil, removing the tuna and then adding 1/4 cup of wine. When I did exactly that, the splattering all over the range, exhaust, floor was unbelievable. Surely the author or Susan Friedland the editor should have known better than to recommend this procedure.
I am now afraid to try anything else.

All parents want to see their children grow up to have a healthy bond with the family dog. This is the most comprehensive guide to achieving a loving, respectful, and sane household.

Maintaining a safe and happy household that includes both puppies and children can be a challenging task. What is the best way to teach a child to respect the family pet? What rules should be established to help avoid conflict? What are realistic expectations for both the puppy and the child? Sharing insight gleaned from over 20 years of combined experience in the field of dog training, the authors provide a roadmap for navigating the sometimes complicated path to a loving and respectful relationship between puppies and children. Real-life examples of interactions between children and dogs clearly illustrate common problems and offer appropriate solutions, while instructional photos give examples of both "right" and "wrong" behavior.

Learn how to meld the playful and protective nature of a puppy with the curiosity and compulsiveness of a child to create a positive atmosphere for the puppy, the child, and the rest of the household.

5 out of 5 stars How kids should play with a puppy.......2006-03-19

Parents can't go wrong getting a puppy for the kid when they first look at RAISING PUPPIES AND KIDS TOGETHER, a fine manual where two top dog trainers how to socialize a puppy and teach a child pet management simultaneously. From infants through school-age kids, chapters cover the basics of how kids should interact with and play with a puppy - and how parents should monitor the interaction. From roughhousing problems to typical dog behaviors and communicating with the pet, chapters focus on dog behavior but include analysis and advise on kid interactions as well. An important owner's manual - for both puppies and kids.

          5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2006-01-12

This book is a "must" read for anyone who has a puppy (or adult dog) and is expecting a baby or who has a baby and planning to get a puppy. The book is a "really should read" for any responsible dog owner. There are tips and techiniques that will make your family's life with your dog much more rewarding. It is organized in a very "reader friendly" way, and for quick reference when needed

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Dog Owners (whether or not you have kids).......2005-11-22

We bought this book because we are expecting our first child in a couple of months and wanted to know how to get our 1 yr old dog ready for the new arrival. The chapter on introducing your dog to the baby is very helpful, and they provide specific training activities to prepare your dog. I also found some of the general dog behavior explanations and advice to be very valuable, whether or not you have kids. I wish we had known about this book several months ago when our dog entered his "teenage" years.

All of his major books are exceptional reading and extremely informative. They aren't for someone who wants a casual understanding of Manichaeism, but they are never unreadably obtuse or so loaded with jargon as to be incomprehensible. I used them extensively in university and was sad when I had to return them to the library.

The famous "I Have a Dream" speech delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the 1963 March on Washington is deservedly remembered as the most potent moment of the civil rights struggle, but Bayard Rustin was the behind-the-scenes architect of that historic event. Rustin "had made significant contributions to a number of movements for African freedom and to the global struggle for human rights," Jervis Anderson notes, but "achieved no significant power in his career. Part of the reason was the breadth and variety of his political involvements." Rustin was a conscientious objector to World War II, worked with the pacifist Fellowship of Reconciliation, participated in A. Phillip Randolph's 1941 Washington protest march, and was a founding member of the Congress of Racial Equality. But another reason for his comparative obscurity is that many of his colleagues feared that public knowledge of his homosexuality would undermine the broader civil rights movement.

Anderson skillfully uncovers Rustin's complicated history, from his West Chester, Pennsylvania, birth in 1912 and black Quaker upbringing to his ideological move from communism to social democracy, and restores to public memory a vital career in the history of nonviolent social activism. Rustin summarized his philosophy for change by noting that "the major aspect of the struggle comes from without. If one gets out and begins to defend one's rights and the rights of others, spiritual growth takes place. One becomes in the process of doing, in the purifying process of action." --Eugene Holley Jr.

                      Book Description

Here is the first biography of one of the most gifted strategists of the civil rights movement. Organizer of the 1963 march on Washington, Bayard Rustin played a significant role during this era of dramatic change in America.

BAYARD RUSTIN, an African-American gay man, was one of the most complex and interesting of the black intellectuals during a period of dramatic change in America. He is perhaps best known as the organizer of the 1963 march on Washington, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his memorable "I Have a Dream" speech. Although Rustin headed no civil rights organization, during most of his career he was a moral and tactical spokesman for them all. Committed to the Ghandian principle of nonviolence, he was the movement's ablest strategist and an indispensable intellectual resource for such major black leaders as Dr. King, A. Philip Randolph, Roy Wilkins, Whitney Young, Dorothy Height and James Farmer. Rustin not only helped to organize the Montgomery boycott of 1955-56 but also drew up the original plan for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the organization that spearheaded King's nonviolent crusade.

But Rustin's career predated the more spectacular phase of the civil rights movement and was not limited to the black freedom struggle. Raised as a Quaker, he was a pacifist and human rights activist all his life, starting as an imprisoned conscientious objector during World War II and Continuing on for the next thirty years as a founding member of the Congress of Racial Equality in the 1940s to heading the A. Philip Randolph Institute in the 1960s and '70s. In his later years, he became a controversial figure in the civil rights struggle as he took issue with some of the stances of the black power and black consciousness movements.

In this landmark biography, historian and biographer Jervis Anderson gives a full account of the life of this inspiring figure. With complete access to Rustin's papers and the cooperation of Rustin's friends and colleagues, Anderson has written an enriching and insightful book on the life of one of the most important heroes of the movements for civil rights and social reform.
