Book Description
"This series kickoff is an embarrassment of riches: Holmesian sleuthing, political satire, and [a] droll comic study of a prickly late bloomer."-Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
"The sights, smells, and colors of Laos practically jump of the pages of this inspired, often wryly witty first novel."-Denver Post
"A wonderfully fresh and exotic mystery. . . . If Cotterill . . . had done nothing more than treat us to Siri's views on the dramatic, even comic crises that mark periods of government upheaval, his debut mystery would still be fascinating. But the multiple cases spread out on Siri's examining table . . . are not cozy entertainments, but substantial crimes that take us into the thick of political intrigue."-The New York Times Book Review
"In Siri, Cotterill has created a detective as distinctive as Maigret or Poirot."-Orlando Sentinel
"The Soho Press crime series . . . has done mystery connoisseurs everywhere a favor by adding Colin Cotterill to its publishing list. The author gives us exotic locations; a world that few of us know well; crisp, intelligent, and often-witty writing; and, most of all, a hero unlike any other." -The Philadelphia Inquirer
Laos, 1975. The Communist Pathet Lao has taken over this former French colony. Dr. Siri Paiboun, a 72-year-old Paris-trained doctor, is appointed national coroner. Although he has no training for the job, there is no one else; the rest of the educated class has fled.
He is expected to come up with the answers the party wants. But crafty and charming Dr.Siri is immune to bureaucratic pressure. At his age, he reasons, what can they do to him? And he knows he cannot fail the dead who come into his care without risk of incurring their boundless displeasure. Eternity could be a long time to have the spirits mad at you.
Customer Reviews:
A great read.......2007-10-02
A unique mystery, with a sweet, spunky, 72-year-old hero. Siri is one of the few doctors left in Laos when the Pathet Lao revolution succeeds, and he is thrust, untrained and unwilling, into the position of State Coroner. But this isn't CSI or Quincy or anything so trite. This book has characters whom readers care about. It also has not one, not two, but at least three critical mysteries to solve--which Siri does, with the help of his nurse and the handicapped man who sweeps up the wholly inadequate morgue. What's so impressive about this book is how easily Cotterill slips you into the culture of 1975 Laos, so that you live and breathe it naturally, enjoying the simple humor of his characters, and the driving sense of justice. I loved it--it made for compulsive reading, and the author made nary a false step. I look forward to reading the other three books about this unusual sleuth. Highly recommended!
Lao Detective Hero.......2007-10-02
It is 1975 and the Pathet Lao have come out of the northern jungles to seize power in Laos. At the victory celebration, seventy two year old Dr. Siri Paiboun mentions to a senior comrade that after forty six years of service to the Communist Party, he would like to retire and receive his hard earned pension. However, the Poliburo has other plans for comrade Dr. Siri. Although, he has no experience, he is to serve as his nation's new coroner. Thus, the sardonic Dr. Siri is thurst into his new role as mystery solver and crime fighter.
For this book to work, the author needs more than an interesting character in an exotic location. In Dr. Siri Paiboun, Colin Coterill has given birth to a charming leading man with a droll wit and a keen mind. For most readers, this will probably be their first glimpse of Laos. As readers, we get to explore Lao culture and spirituality. Laos is far off the beaten track and Dr. Siri is a first rate tour guide. Highly recommended.
Delightful, But Somewhat Misty Thriller.......2007-08-12
This book was most delightful with its fascinating characters, particularly Sari and his weird Morgue staffers. I would say the characters were the highlight of the book -- but I found the plot itself, somewhat unsatisfying. I don't know why, maybe I was so hooked on the characters that I lost track of the plot. And Cotterill's forays into the mystical were interesting enough -- they just seemed to get in the way of the plot all too often, even though they were essential TO the plot. Laos provides a delightful setting and the author's humorous treatment of life there under Communism was chuckle-inducing. The author writes with a deft hand and the witty repartee among characters is simply irrestible. All in all, a good book.
A Well-Seasoned Hero.......2007-07-03
Hats off for a range of attractive and well-seasoned characters about whom I only wanted to learn more and more. I read this in under two days during the work week. It handles well, reads at a good pace, and provides a thrilling ride through the topography of communist Laos. Bravo. The episodic interventions of the supernatural were well-dosed, augmenting the tale and adding atmosphere without capsizing its character as a thriller. I was a bit wrong-footed on the ending, perhaps expecting a more fabulous denouement, and distracted by a bit of misdirection in terms of possible perpetrators. Perhaps my attention was wandering as I read past the midnight hour and sipped my cognac on a working night; the final pages were a bit deflating but I thank Mr. Cotterill for the exquisite world he sketched and I look forward to tackling the next volume, hoping he can maintain and add to the fine cast of characters that people this novel.
Mystery on the heels of a political upheaval.......2007-04-29
Colin Cotterill's taut, little mystery "The Coroner's Lunch" is set in the reconstructing Republic of Laos in 1976, shortly after the Communist takeover of Indochina. The fall of Vietnam coincided with the communist Pathet Lao assuming control in Laos.
With the country in the midst of relearning the tenets of Communism, the French educated physician, Dr. Siri Paiboun had been annointed chief coroner of the country. The cynical and acerbic septagenarium Dr. Siri, who holds no great regards for political red tape, conducts his business in the morgue located in Vientiane. Assisted by nurse Dtui and mildly retarded morgue assistant Geung, their lack of activitity is suddenly modified when the haughty wife of a high ranking politician is brought in for an autopsy. Questions begin to arise when poisoning is suspected.
Soon thereafter a group of three waterlogged corpses of Vietnamese officials are brought to the morgue with indications of torture as the cause of death. The fragile relations between Vietnam and Laos are in jeopardy as a result of this discovery and Dr. Siri commences investigating both peculiar scenarios.
Dr. Siri has political connections through an old friend Civilai which gives him leeway in his inquests. Aided by his two assistants he also recruits a sympathetic police inspector Phosy and Vietnamese coroner Dr. Nguyen Hong to navigate his way through these mysteries. Siri, has been endowed with the ability to foretell through his dreams. His spirituality greatly enhances his capability to decipher these puzzling cases.
Cotterill, who lives in Thailand, uses his familiarity with the region to craft an entertaining crime drama which also reveals the altering political structure within the borders of this relatively obscure locale.

Intense pleasure-reading.......2000-07-14
Alas, the very last one of the Thieves' World-novels. It makes you crave for more! The intensity with which the authors write is spell-binding in itself, and truly of all ages (future earth is here, as well as ancient Azehurean culture and the place of timelessness): treating human matters of responsibility, friendship, growing up and the difference/reconciliation of the sexes in a powerful, rounded way. Whoever has read other novels by the Morrises will know that here philosophy, religion and the occult are tested against the human heart. Splendid! I only wish Niko and Kama had grown up a bit more. Note: it took me five years to understand exactly what maat-issue was at stake, and when I did I still thought the book very much worth reading!

Description:
We used Jurinea cyanoides as a model plant species to ask the question whether sheep play a dual role in enabling the establishment of a rare species (1) by epizoochorous transport of diaspores and (2) by influencing post-dispersal processes. We carried out two field experiments in sand grassland (Jurineo-Koelerietum glaucae) in the northern upper Rhine valley, Germany. In the first one, we attached diaspores to the fleeces of sheep and assessed retention time, seed shadow, seedling emergence and establishment. In the second one, diaspore displacement by sheep trampling was investigated. It could be shown that establishment of J. cyanoides is possible after sheep-epizoochorous dispersal, but is severely limited by several factors. First, retention time is mostly short (only 18% of the diaspores remained in the fleeces >2h). Thus, the seed shadow is concentrated around the place of attachment (mostly
<5m distance, maximum 17m). Second, seedling emergence of dispersed achenes is severely limited by above-ground granivory (99%). Third, establishment is limited by seedling mortality (68%) due to summer drought. The seedlings germinated from achenes that had been incorporated into the soil (or into deeper parts of the bryophyte layer). The second experiment showed that sheep trampling significantly enhanced the incorporation of achenes into the soil compared with controls. Our study gives evidence that sheep can play a dual role: diaspore transport and facilitation of establishment by trampling.

Super Reader.......2007-08-04
In this book Orion has another, different antagonist that his god-like avatar runners want him to deal with. This time the being is named Set, you know, the serpent god guy. This whole reptile control thing lets him be a dinosaur master. Now, really, this is pretty cool. Who wouldn't want to be a dinosaur master?
Orion still has to find some way to deal with him though.
jacket summary.......2006-02-16
from the inside cover of the August 1991 TOR paperback edition
cover art by Boris Vallejo
Anya and I would never be free to live as normal human beings. There would always be the Creators to pull my strings, never leaving us alone. Always a new task, a new enemy, a new time and place. But never a time and place for happiness. Not for me. Not for us.
I liked the historical settings but could do without Aliens.......2004-02-16
Orion in the Dying Time continues the tale of Orion (the Hunter), this time sent back to do battle with Set, an evil reptilian alien on whom all the legends of Satan are based. Unfortunately, in the Dying Time was not nearly as intriguing as the first two novels in the series. The alien Set is not a very interesting opponent and the seemingly unfair advantage he has over the humans in virtually every situation is somewhat ridiculous. Orion even travels back to the Cretaceous Period to do battle with Set (Set created the dinasaurs much the same way that the Creators created human beings). The ending of Orion in the Dying Time was shaping up to be very interesting with Orion using his developing powers to bring 1000 Mongol warriors back in time to do battle with Set, but they didn't even get involved in the final outcome.
Orion the Hunter vs Set the Dinosaur Man.......2000-06-16
Like Ben Bova's first two Orion novels (Orion and Vengeance of Orion), Orion in the Dying Time has the more-than-human, less-than-god Orion being used and abused by by the Creators, a race of very advanced god-like humans. This time, they send Orion on an errand to save mankind before it is wiped out by the maddened alien pseudo-god Set. Though Orion hates being the Creator's lackey, he realizes that if his mission fails, humanity (which includes himself as well as the Creators) will be erased from the time-line. Orion then finds himself battling the minions of Set back in the time of dinosaurs. At stake is his very existence.
This is a good sci-fi novel that deals with gods, eternity, time travel and destiny -- something Orion constantly tries to thwart, in one form or the other.
Orion hates being a slave to fate. Can't say I blame him.
Orion meets Jurrassic Park!.......1999-08-02
Damn Ben Bova, you did it yet again! A great read in all genre's. It is like Bova meets Burroughs! A must read for the Godliness in you!

Deee-lish fast and surprisingly simple vegan cooking.......2007-01-03
This is one of my favorite everyday vegan cookbooks. It has great 'oh I never thought of making that vegan-style' recipes that taste fantastic, are quick to make and use ingredients that you more than likely already have in your pantry.
If you're new to the vegan world, Vegan Vittles has some great vegan primer info touching on everything from vegan ethics to a breakdown on basic vegan cooking ingredients.
The book itself is well-written and well-organized, which are both ridiculously important to me (typos in cookbooks make me want to pull my hair out). This is definitely a book for vegan chefs of all levels and perfect for those that just want to eat a little bit healthier. Love it!
Fun, informative, inspiring........2006-11-23
This is a wonderful cookbook. A must-read for all vegans, especially beginners who aren't entirely familiar with using vegan ingredients.
Exquisite vegan fare.......2006-08-04
This is my absolute favorite vegan cookbook, and I make several of the recipes repeatedly. Jo's tried and tested recipes are so tasty, I've never been disappointed. Most dishes call for simple and easy-to-find ingredients, making it handy for every day use. From fabulous puddings to savory soups and sumptuous main dishes, I've shared many of these creations with family and friends, with rave reviews. You will not be disappointed with this book, for sure and for certain!
Delicious vegan recipes.......2006-06-13
I love this book, from the recipes to the farm animal pictures to the little phrases changed to avoid animal cruelty. Almost every recipe I made from this book has rocked. I wasn't crazy about the grilled cheese, and the oatmeal cookies were pretty dry, but most of the recipes were awesome. The pumpkin pie, potato-kale soup, macaroni salad, carrot cake, basic seitan recipe, nut milk recipes, etc. were great. And I love that all those little cooking details (blending hot liquids, grinding nuts, properly heating pans, etc.) are included.
My only problem with the book is that so many of the recipes rely on tofu. Like using silken tofu for almost any dessert or sauce. This makes the food taste good and gives it a great texture, and I love tofu...but I'm not convinved it's the super food we say it is, and for variety's sake I don't think it should be added to so many foods. So I guess this book is a little tofu-heavy, but beyond that, it's the best. I'd definitely recommend it to any vegan.
Great vegan recipes - tasty and simple.......2006-01-22
This is a great cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow, and most use common ingredients. The chickpea a la king is one of my favorites!

Westie Wonderland.......2007-06-08
What a cute book! How can anyone resist the beautiful and winsome Westie? Well, I suppose someone who hates animals might, but anyhow, aside from crazy people like that, I'd like to say that this book is really good, and the photos are very nice.
Fast read for setting expectations about your Westie........2007-03-08
This book is a "must read" for those who are new to West Highland Terriers or who are considering buying a Westie. They are a unique breed with their own pecular traits. Learning about them quickly will give you a clear picture of what to expect.
The book seems to be accruate with the possible exception that the Westie's learning curve is not quite as rapid as the book implies. They are an intelligent breed and very affectionate, while headstrong at the same time. Handling them effectively requires some homework on the owner's part.
This book is a good start!
An Essential book for Westie owners.......2002-01-16
As a breeder and lover of West Highland White Terriers, I picked
this little book to give to each of the families where I place my Westies.
There are many books out there on Westies and they are all good
but I wanted the new owners to have something for a quick-read,
that would equip them with essential facts about this breed of dog for a Westie is like no other dog.
They are in a class all to themselves.
This book does just that---gives the reader lots of information about the Personality, Homecoming, Health, Nutritious feeding program, Grooming, Breed Standard, History of the Westie, Behavior and Training.
I recommend this book highly to anyone contemplating getting a Westie. I never tire of reading it again and again and always
glean something that helps me be a better person with my Westies.
Someone once said that "without communication, there can be no understanding." After reading this book, your understanding of the West Highland White Terrier will increase and it will proportionately affect your communication with your pet, the little dog that is possessed with no small amount of self-esteem!!
And you will both understand each other better.

Kirigami 8.......2001-07-01
This book is the final book in the series of eight books. It contains 24 patterns that are considered to be lucky symbols. The lucky symbols include bamboo leaves, dahilias, and maple leaves for good fortune. Designs used in jade which was worn to repel evil spirits. Birds such as doves, geese, magpies, and the phoenix which represents peace, happiness and good fortune. Double happiness symbols where the left side of the pattern is the mirror image of the right side. For a bride and groom this is a wish for them "to stick to each other till their hair turns grey" and to "have a harmonious union lasting a hundred years". The book also contains flower blossom patterns which represent perfection, blessedness, prosperity and joy. And the final patterns are the longevity patterns used to wish one good fortune and a long life.

Good, but not for the faint-hearted.......1999-07-01
This book (which only covers Isaiah chapters 1-22) tells you everything you could want to know about the accuracy of the published Hebrew text. It prints the text from the 10th century Aleppo codex, plus variants from the Septuagint, Vulgate, Dead Sea Scrolls, Talmud, other Rabbinic sources and several mediaeval manuscripts. Invaluable, but almost impossible for the layman (or laywoman)to decipher.

Target That Special Audience.......2005-05-14
Many of the easy-to-organize projects in this book are centered around holidays or special events, such as Day of the Child/Day of the Book, Day of the Dead, Cinco de Mayo, and Hispanic Heritage Month, but many of the projects involve "everyday crafts." There are step-by-step instructions for making masks, corn husk dolls, beads, paper flowers, piñatas, etc., and recipes for such delectables as sweet tamales and gorditas. The activities do not require hard-to-find or expensive materials, and they are designed for all ages, from preschoolers, to after-schoolers (over six years old), and families. (summary by South Texas Library System)
This should increase the comfort level of librarians unfamiliar with this special audience. As communities across the country increase their Hispanic populations, the need to be welcoming to this diverse group puzzles some libraries.

An important contribution to 20th Century Chinese history.......2003-03-02
This is the very readable interesting story of Grace Divine, an aspiring opera student from Chatanooga, Tennessee, who married a Chinese engineering student, moved to China in the 1930's and raised a family. It is the story of the Japanese occupation, the civil war in the 1940's, the political changes of the 1950's, the Great Leap Forward, tne Cultural revolution amd various and sundry changes in China during the 40 years from 1934 to 1974.
All told in the most interesting and contiguous manner. The book is historically interesting - telling how a courageous woman raised her family through it all. An inspiring true story which should be read not only for inspiration and enjoyment, but can also be used as a reference book for those who want to know more about China during this period.
