Book Description
Second in the Kurt Wallander series.
On the Swedish coastline, two bodies, victims of grisly torture and cold execution, are discovered in a life raft. With no witnesses, no motives, and no crime scene, Detective Kurt Wallander is frustrated and uncertain he has the ability to solve a case as mysterious as it is heinous. But after the victims are traced to the Baltic state of Latvia, a country gripped by the upheaval of Soviet disintegration, Major Liepa of the Riga police takes over the investigation. Thinking his work done, Wallander slips into routine once more, until suddenly, he is called to Riga and plunged into an alien world where shadows are everywhere, everything is watched, and old regimes will do anything to stay alive.
Customer Reviews:
Wallander Works His Magic in Eastern Europe.......2007-08-24
In most mystery novels, the social order is disturbed when a horrific crime is committed. The hero/detective uses his superior skills to solve the mystery, catch the criminal and thus restore the social order. One variation on this pattern is when the mystery writer takes the hero/detective out of his element and places him in a strange environment where the system and rules of the game are radically different. The thrill of this variation is to see the hero's superior insights and skill triumph in a hostile environment.
"The Dogs of Riga" is a classic example of this variant. The Iron Curtain is falling and mysterious forces are waging a hidden war to determine Latvia's destiny. Into this morass, stumbles the stolid Swede from Ystad, Kurt Wallander. He knows nothing of the language, culture or history of Latvia. Nevertheless, the churning undertow of Latvian politics draws Wallander into the fray. The pleasure of this story is to see Kurt Wallander's superior intellect reassert itself in this topsy turvy world.
If you are new to the Kurt Wallander series, this book is not the best place to start. It is better to have seen him work on his own ground. "The Dogs of Riga" is not the strongest book in the series but for those of us who love the rumpled detective, this book is a pleasure.
Average Police Procedural.......2007-04-12
I found this book lacking in excitement and credibility. I liked the character of Wallender but found the other characters not very well developed. And the plot was weak. For instance, I can't understand why the detective was so driven to return to Riga and risk his life, if not his comfort, to get involved in something that did not seem compelling. I felt the novel got off to a good start, but then lapsed into incredulity. This was my first, and will probably be my last, Wallendar novel. I just found the characters and the plot weak and unexciting.
Not That Great: It Departs Too Far From Reality.......2007-02-04
Just as a point of trivia but in Europe and in Sweden, detective Kurt Wallander's home, the spelling is sometimes Wallender or Wallander, but usually Wallander. One encounters both spellings on amazon.
I thank fellow reviewer Leonard Fleisig for bringing this author to my attention. The writing is simply superb, and I am very interested in reading more books by the same author. The story overall is not great and there are better books by the author. In addition to this book, I have read five other books in the Kurt Wallender series, including The Man Who Smiled, and One Step Behind.
I gave the book 4 stars. I thought that the story was sometimes slow and there were too many coincidences and unreal fights in the book. Wallender is more interesting when he is at home in Sweden and when there is more interaction with other policemen at the Ystad station. Here that element is almost lacking and that spoils the book, along with the many departures from reality. Also, the story follows the same Wallender formula which after three books is a bit too predictable: chapter one is a murder, and in a subsequent chapter a fellow policeman or friend of Wallender is murdered, dragging Wallender into the conflict.
Most of the story is set in Riga, but the opening sections are set in southern Sweden in Wallender's home base of Ystad.
I will not give away the plot and the essential plot elements are outlined by the publisher: two dead bodies wash up on the shore near Ystad in a rubber raft. A policeman arrives from Riga since the bodies are traced to that city. Wallender works on solving the crime in Sweden and then follows the crime to Riga.
This is a fast read that I was able to read it in less than a day. I read it while staying at a hotel in southern Sweden, not too far from the crime scene; the details and descriptions of the places and other details are authentic.
The writing is smooth and flawless, but the story pulls it down to 4 stars. One Step Behind is a better book in the series.
I have been a stranger in a strange land.......2007-01-23
In Henning Mankell's "The Dogs of Riga" police inspector Kurt Wallander finds himself alone and possibly in peril in post-Soviet Latvia. He is truly a stranger in a strange land.
The plot of "The Dogs of Riga", the second in Mankell's Kurt Wallander mystery series, is fairly straightforward. Two bodies wash up on the southern coast of Sweden, near the town of Ystad. Police Inspector Kurt Wallander is placed in charge of the investigation. The investigation reveals that the bodies had drifted across the Baltic Sea from the Republic of Latvia. A Latvia police detective arrives to assist Wallander before the investigation is turned over to the Latvian police force. However, Wallander is soon obligated to travel to Riga, Latvia's capital. Wallander is immersed immediately in the Byzantine politics that engulfed Latvia and the Baltic States in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet empire. He doesn't speak the language, he knows next to nothing of the political situation he has walked into, and yet plods on, determined to get to the bottom, not of the murders of the two Latvians, but of a new-found Latvian friend and colleague.
Mankell's Kurt Wallander series is often compared to the Martin Beck detective mysteries authored by the husband and wife team of Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall. Wallander, like Beck, is a police detective in Sweden. Unlike Beck, whose beat was Stockholm, Wallander works in the small southern-Swedish city of Ystad. The Wallander series takes place in the 1990s while the Beck series took place in the 1960s and 1970s. Although I tend to prefer the Beck series, the Wallander books are entertaining page-turners. Mankell stays well within the `police procedural' formula and has not tried to reinvent the genre. However, he has done a good job, in these first two volumes in the series, of developing the character of Mankell and his supporting cast of characters. Wallander is no Sherlock Holmes and gets results more by perspiration than inspiration. He is also a fully drawn character. We see him dealing with the break-up of a marriage, an estranged daughter, and a father who is developing senile dementia. The supporting characters, particularly his fellow detectives, are also well drawn.
Although I think I like the Martin Beck series a bit more, the Kurt Wallander series, so far, has been entertaining. As noted, Mankell stays well within the confines of the police procedural. However, he manages to put together an entertaining plot and keeps the reader `engaged' with his recurring characters. Mankell does not hide clues from the reader. In fact, the opposite is the case. I found myself seeing `clues' throughout this piece wondering if and when Wallander would spot them. Some may find that not to their liking, but it kept me entertained. Recommended. L. Fleisig
Story catches reality, but the reader is not for Mankell..........2007-01-16
Westerners who were present at the time will know that this story does a terrific job of catching the way things were in early ex-Soviet Baltic countries in early '90s. And it is a good Wallender story, as well. And the Wallender - Liepa connection is a mainstay throughout the rest of the series. Dick Hill is a gifted reader, and one whom I admire and enjoy for his voice and ability to use it -- sometimes. But he is not at all right for this series. Mr Hill's reading is a major distraction -- kind of like the New Joiseyian who tries to do Texan. After hearing Sean Barrett on the Isis Audio Books of UK reading Mankell, this is disappointing by comparison. But I would buy and recommend Hill's Mankell readings anyway, and I want more. Blackstone Audio, Inc, please check out Mr. Barrett, but don't stop making Mankells in any case!

Book Description
In her latest novel, The Silent Tower, Barbara Hambly has written a complex tale of dark magic, mystery and deadly danger involving a woman computer programmer who struggles to help a condemned wizard save--or perhaps destroy?--two worlds...
Customer Reviews:
good stuff.......2005-12-13
Hambly is one of those authors whose books are *always* on the shelves in stores. I have been seeing them for more years than I care to admit, but I finally decided to read something and see why she's been so prolific. I did a little research and this was the oldest one I could find.
The technology is (of course) a little dated now, but not so much that it even matters. These stories that involved someone from our world traveling to a fantasy world are not the easiest thing to pull off but Hambly does it without a hitch. This was a very entertaining read. I am almost finished with the 2nd book in the series and haven't lost interest for a single page. Good stuff.
A classic --.......2004-03-02
It always astounds me to find out that Hambly fans aren't aware of or haven't gotten to the Windrose Chronicles. This is her best work by far, and some of the best fantasy out there, period.
Our heroine, Joanna, finds herself transported across a terrifying Void from enchantment-free Los Angeles (circa the 1980s) to Ferryth, a medieval kingdom on another world, in the company of an actual wizard (Antryg Windrose) and hunted by sundry and all as she makes her way in a morass of treachery and a central mystery that reveals itself in snatches - like the periods of grey, hopeless misery that are affecting both worlds, and the shifting loyalties, inexplicable actions, and agendas of the other wizards, the hateful church witchfinders, the king, the prince regent, and the young warrior who swears that Antryg murdered his grandfather in cold blood and opened the Void for terrible reasons of his own.
Any way she looks at it, Antryg is the only one who can send her home. And he seems to be the only person trying to solve the riddle of the larger pattern. Can he be trusted at all? And if Antryg isn't responsible for the horrors and her own abduction - who is?
The characters are quirky, loveable, and all too human, and the unfolding plot keeps you on your toes. This is a great read - see The Silicon Mage for the rest of the tale!
The Silent Tower by Barbara Hambly.......2002-05-30
LEGACY OF THE DARK MAGE....
Someone was crossing the forbidding Void between the universes. In San Serano, Joanna felt the terror strike, before dark hands were seizing her to kidnap her and take her...elsewhere. In the Empire of Ferryth, Caris watched a wizard murdered by a figure that vanished into a tunnel of darkness. And abominations were crossing through the weakening fabric of the Void.
And in the Silent Tower, where every stone was sealed and spelled against all magic, Antryg Windrose, student of the Dark Mage, was supposed to be going mad.
Only Antryg and the Dark Mage had understood the Void, the Archmage claimed. Yet the Dark Mage had been executed for his evil twenty-five years before. And Antryg was helpless. Or was he?
A Really Solid, Good Read.......2001-06-28
A friend loaned me a copy of this book as an introduction to Barbara Hambly's books. His copy was really battered, and it wasn't his first, as he'd given away and worn to dust other copies. I've since done the same with this and the other two books in her Windrose stories, Silicon Mage and Dog Wizard. The characters live and breathe, and that's what makes this great, why I've read these many times and will do so again. I love books in general, but there are some books that I will never ever be "finished" reading, and this is one. I hope it comes back into print soon, but used is as good as new!
A good story - A great read!.......2000-03-16
Barbara Hambly's the Silent Tower is a beautifully written book. It has well-developed and affable characters. For what the plot lacks in credibility, it makes up for by keeping you guessing. This could have easily been a 5-star review were it not for the plot's shortcomings. despite the unbelievable portions of the plot, I still could not stand to put it down. It is an excellent and fast read. Enjoy.

Phobos Books slides down the razor's edge of science fiction with this anthology. The third in our Phobos Award series of disturbing, mindbending, reality-twisting stories by the stars of science fiction's next generation.
Customer Reviews:
Good, Not as Strong as "Brilliant in Chrome".......2005-01-03
This is the third collection of short science-fiction stories from Phobos, and they have a good eye for emerging talent, but this collection underscores the need for more writers producing more good ideas. They essentially admit as much in the afterword.
The stories in this collection are mostly strong, but none of them really light up the place like some in the earlier collection, "Absolutely Brilliant in Chrome".
I recommend this to anyone who wants to invest in supporting new voices in SF, but if you just want a quick thrill, read the first two books instead.

Book Description
As an encore to her popular "The Classical Rider," Loch has now written a book that focuses attention on an equal relationship between horse and rider, exploring riding from both the rider's "and" the horse's point of view.
Customer Reviews:
Well organized and easy to follow........2006-12-18
I selected this book based on the reviews that have been posted. I was not disappointed in the least.
Extremely Practical .......2006-06-27
Finally a book on classical dressage that really tells you HOW to do it. Sylvia Loch is fantastic. I recommend this book to those who sometime feel like the real detail of how to apply the aids is missing from other dressage texts.
A must have book for any rider.......2005-08-31
I cannot adequately describe the beauty and accuracy with which she writes. Clarifying the aids, and the horse's biomechanics and perceptions with a truly classical constructive approach.
A truly helpful, different perspective with easy to understand content for all riders.
Makes you think about what you are doing as a rider........2005-02-13
I've had this book for over a year and I didn't pick it out to read until recently. I had been focused on books directed at training young horses and I thought this book would be better suited for a future stage when my mare had at least mastered the basics under saddle. Boy, do I wish I had started this book sooner!
I found this book to be the perfect companion book to others I have on starting young horses. Primarily because it makes you think about what you, as a rider, are doing. It is all too easy to focus on the young horse, instead of yourself. But if you have picked up bad habits along the way, you'll be hindering your progress and frustrating your horse.
What I like most about this book, is that it gives you the horses perspective, how he feels about each movement and how you deliver the aids. It encourages you to breakdown each movement and think about what you are doing as a rider - are you asking correctly and using the aids effectively.
The first few chapters (literally the first half of the book) are excellent for training a young horse, or re-schooling an older one. The subsequent chapters build up through the levels, from Training Level to Grand Prix. I know this book will be well used.
Very enjoyable book!.......2004-09-30
This book is thorough and well-written. I enjoy the Author's perspective very much, and I think anyone new to riding or dressage might find it very enlightening. Like one of the previous reviews, however, I agree that it doesn't provide anything new, and more advanced students would probably get more out of reading the old masters. But a very good book, and I'm glad I bought it - definitely worth a read!!
Book Description
This is an exciting new guide to a never-before-documented field of antique fishing collectibles. It includes hundreds of color photos (many items are shown actual size), patent drawings, and clear, precise computer scans of patented spring-loaded traps, hooks, and lures, most of which have never been pictured, discussed, or valued in any book. These ingenious American inventions span the time period from pre-Civil War until the 1970s, with values ranging from $10.00 to $10,000.00. The book provides a written and visual history of spring-loaded fishing devices along with descriptions and explanations of their mechanisms in concise, easy-to-understand language that the beginning, intermediate, and advanced collector has not had access to in any book. This long-awaited book on Americana collectibles sets a new standard in the field of collecting antique fishing memorabilia. Written by the countrys two foremost collectors and experts in the field, this informative, fascinating book is a must for anyone interested in the history of fishing in the United States, antique fishing memorabilia, or metal traps.
Customer Reviews:
We are extremely impressed!.......2005-11-26
My husband and I know one of the authors, Tim Mierzwa, personally. He told us in August of 2005 that he had a book coming out about fishing lures and other equipment. We weren't sure what to think. But when we received the book recently, my
husband and I were extremely impressed on the detail, the photos, explanations and layout of the book! My husband enjoys
fishing and I don't, but BOTH of us are enjoying the book
immensely! I am now ordering another copy for the outdoor club
we live in to share with the members. For anyone interested in
fishing, collecting fishing gear and/or the history and value of fishing gear, this is THE book to own!

Book Description
The daughter of former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young draws universal lessons from her mother's extraordinary life.
When Andrew Young first ran for Congress, he was known in Atlanta as "Jean Young's husband." Jean, beloved wife, former First Lady of Atlanta, civic leader, educator, friend and colleague of Maya Angelou, Coretta Scott King, Marian Wright Edelman, and Jimmy and Roslyn Carter, was the proud mother of four who instilled in her children the importance of love, integrity, and faith. Written by her daughter, Andrea, Life Lessons My Mother Taught Me celebrates a good mother, a life well-lived and worth emulating, and values that can help us all become more ethical people, more loving parents, and better citizens.
Weaving personal stories against a backdrop rich in the turbulent politics of our recent past, Young paints an evocative picture of life in a Southern middle-class black family during the social change that came in the wake of the Great Depression and legalized segregation. Here is a book to be widely shared by mothers and daughters.
"My mother was a woman of strong character, of deep and abiding commitments and a loving nature that drew people into her orbit. She was my friend, my mentor, my guide, my critic, and my amen corner. In her home, I found refuge and comfort. In her voice, I found wisdom." --from the Introduction

Wonderful tribute to all mothers.......2000-05-13
This book of Jean Young's lessons is a tribute to all mothers. They are valuable life lessons for any woman. These may not be the exact lessons your mother taught, but if you add them to your mother's loving lessons of life, you are sure to have a great map to follow.
Love Legacy.......2000-03-06
March 5, 2000 On reading this book, I reconnected with the tremendous love felt for my mother and the rich experiences she provided me and my siblings. Throughout, I smiled on recognizing the churchgoing experiences and other events also present in my childhood and the southern expressions incorporated in my speech. Thank you for a book that not only celebrates Ms. Young's outstanding African-American mother, but also, my mother and many other unsung mothers who shared special, loving relationships with us, their daughters.
A good read.......2000-02-25
I always like to read about the lives of other people. Especially one as famous as Jean Young. Her daughter has written a lovely biography as well as life lessons that were taught to her by her mother. A wonderful gem of a book to be read by young and old alike.
