As an "expert" on Sherlock Holmes and all the "bad guys" who are connected with him, I was anxious to read this book. It was fair. I enjoyed reading it...but...I could tell how the plot was going to play out by half-way through the book. For Holmes fanatics, read it...for others...don't.
Good, but not Kurland's best.......2006-04-21
THE EMPRESS OF INDIA is a pretty good read, even though there are too many oddball characters and the identity of the gold thief is obvious. I've read all of Michael Kurland's Moriarty books even though I'm not crazy about the idea that the professor is an innocent victim of Holmes' bizarre obsession about a master criminal - that idea had already been used in THE SEVEN PERCENT SOLUTION. The biggest fault here is that Holmes is missing for most of the story, robbing the reader of his exchanges with Moriarty. THE GREAT GAME was better, they were forced to work together in that one.
fabulous historical mystery .......2006-02-08
In 1890, the Empress of India leaves Calcutta carrying a quarter-ton of gold to deliver to the Bank of England in London. The vessel also carries an assortment of passengers including the notorious Professor James Moriarty and the malevolent Colonel Sebastian Moran. Brigadier General Sir Edward St. Yves leads thirty Highland Lancers watching over the fortune; his eighteen years old Lolita like daughter, Margaret accompanies him.
Moriarty and Moran compete for possession of the valuable heavily bejeweled statuette "Queen of Lamapoor" also on board. However, someone steals the gold shipment. The English government immediately assumes Moriarty did the deed. They ask Holmes to retrieve the stolen loot from the Professor, but instead he vanishes. Meanwhile Moriarty not enjoying the limelight that interferes with his "business" activities decides to solve the case of what appears to have been an impossible theft.
The latest Moriarty investigative tale is a fabulous historical mystery that uses the "locked room" concept enhanced by a vivid look at relationships during the late Victorian era "The Sun Never Sets on the British Empire" mindset. The terrific story line contains a strong who-done-it and how he or she purloined the gold, but is held together mostly by the "hero" who finds being the prime suspect interfering with his efforts to win the prize of GREAT GAME instead of Moran succeeding at the endeavor. Michael Kurland provides a wonderful thriller as the unknown opponent seems to match Moriarty with for wit.

Miller And Sienkiewicz At Their Best!.......2003-12-29
This large hardcover collects the Daredevil Graphic Novel (Love and War) as well as the entire Elektra Assassin series. Both stories were written by Frank Miller and illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz.
I missed reading these stories when they first came out in the 1980s but I'd heard so much about the great Miller-Sienkiewicz collaborations that I just had to get this book. The bonus is that you get the glorious Sienkiewicz art in a much larger size here than in the original - so you can spend hours poring over all the details. After all, this is the work that made Bill Sienkiewicz into, well... BILL SIENKIEWICZ!
The "Love and War" story is essentially about Kingpin and his wife, Vanessa. For those who have followed the storylines in Frank Miller's Daredevil comics (collected in the 3 volume Visionaries tradepaperbacks), you'll know that Vanessa went through a hell of a mental ordeal - finally reducing her to a vegetable. This is the follow-up story for those wondering how the Kingpin-Vanessa story went. This story, more than any other, shows Kingpin as a human who CAN be hurt... and hurt deeply. Not by do-gooder superheroes but by love. Sienkiewicz illustrates this story in a lyrical yet surreal fashion. The scenes showing Daredevil cradling Vanessa while jumping across the rooftops are so poetic and lyrical that you'll cry reading them.
"Elektra Assassin" is the real MEAT of this hardcover collection, though. Daredevil doesn't appear in this. It's all about Elektra and this secret agent. Miller mixes in Japanese mysticism, political paranoia, Greek tragedy, shadow-play espionage, gender issues, sex, violence, claustrophobic mind-games, media manipulation and the Biblical apocalypse into this story. Sienkiewicz takes the whole witch-brew and hammers the whole thing into form. The result is a heady trip... an experience, an encounter with a dangerous woman who may be the only one who knows what the hell is going on - and how to FIX it. This is the greatest example of comics-experimentation in the 1980s (Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen are the other examples).

I began reading Ms. Bradley's work probably around the time this book was published, but I never saw this in a store until 1998. I was very familiar with her writing style and had grown attached to all the Darkover, Avalon and Atlantis characters but I never knew of her short stories. Some of these are from her writing "beginnings" and I must say, they are the best I've ever read. Each is complete. That is not to say they all leave you satisfied. Some I don't believe are meant to do that, but instead seem to have an urgency in the telling that doesn't go away when you finish the last paragraph. I can still feel the family in "Jamie" and I can still feel my revulsion for the stress relieving mechanism is another of the stories. This is a wonderful collection with a depth that I don't think was always able to be realized in Ms. Bradley's popular novels. It's well worth the ordering wait.

An eclectic mix!.......1998-04-21
I read Anthologies. I read them alot, and one thing I've noticed is that there is usually at least one story that just isn't worth the trouble of reading it. This is one book where this was not a problem.
Since this book is a collection of stories from a magazine there are many types of subjects with only the magazine as a common thread among the seperate stories. This is a departure from current anthologies and actually kept me interested throughout the book.
Great for subway rides!

Short Stories from Darkover to Lythande..........2000-07-18
This book presents us to several short stories written by MZB with her incredible imagination, showing many different worlds, going from Earth to Darkover. You can read one story telling about the renunciants organization(Darkover), another one is about Lythande (a blue star magician with a secret). In my opinion, the best short story in this book, is the one about the Centauru's Children - where having a baby is the same to a death sentence to the mother... Well everyone can decide what is the most interesting of the 15 short stories of this book and vote in it.

Interesting perspective.......2007-01-25
In this book Lori Lyn Narlock presents a selection of central California wineries and establishments that would make a great destination for a day/weekend trip.
Although wine is certainly the central theme of the book, other aspects such as winery owners, picnic accomodations, historical factors, vegetable gardens, tours, etc are criterias considered for recommendation.
The book describes several apellations in Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino. Wine is certainly a subjective matter but the author tried to divide them into favorites and "best of the rest" and I think she manages to pull it off. How fine is the line? You'll have to follow the the book through the vinyards and decide for yourself.
What I liked about the book is that it contains website listings, phone numbers, intersting photos along with notable facts and trivia about the wineries, their people and the place.

This book is a nice resource for Newfie owners, the only thing I was disappointed with is the lack of color pictures. It is all black and white. However, several times while reading about common traits, I thought to myself, "our Newfie does that!", so it is very accurate information, however nothing you couldn't find online if researching Newfoundlands.

I did not realiz this book did not have any colored pictures. I don't recall reading anything telling me this book was not in color. All the picture inside were in black and white and that was disapointing. I took forever to get my books form Amazon. It took 4 weeks and I also order books from privat seller through Amazon which arived much sooner then the new ones form Amazon. Disapointing.....
Want to love a Newfy?.......2006-11-21
This is an excelent book about the breeds characteristics, specialy if like me, you are a first time newfoundland owner or if you are trying to know if a newfoundland is the best breed for you. It contains also information about newfis working abilities, if you like to know what this dogs are capable of doing and you are willing to make the best out of your dog. I highly recomend it for it's magnificent photographs: You'll get in love with this dogs!

This is an amazing book! Wonderful candid shots of beautiful Newfs and beautiful people!! To see Marg Wilmott and her infamous (to the Newf world) farm with Newfs everywhere, just roaming the countryside, is just amazing to imagine, much less be able to SEE via Mr Weber's photos.
Plus, Bruce Weber has beautiful Goldens....I have beautiful Goldens. Bruce Weber has gifted us with an extraordinary book full of wonderful photographs of spectacular Newfs....I have five spectacular Newfs of my own!!

Great pics of Newfs; can do without naked men........1998-03-30
I own a Newfy and can appreciate how dificult it is to photograph black dogs. So many of these pics make one smile; but the naked men are laughable. What is it I don't get here? Hardcover, family-oriented, coffee-table-type book, with these naked guys running around. How artsy?! Text is sadly lacking. For example, the section on training rescue newfs is visually exciting and has great potential, but it begs so many more questions.

I found this book by chance. As I own a Newfoundland, I bought it, but I never could imagine how lovely it was. If you have a Newfoundland, you would like to have this book, you could read one and another time the text, and you will enjoy with the pictures. I wish that my Newfy was on this book.

I just attended my 3rd course with Dawn King. If you can take a course with her it is well worth it! The book is easy to follow and the projects actually end up looking like the pictures in the book!! Dawn is a super teacher with a light hearted approach. 5 stars for her and her book.
Disappointing.......2006-08-09
This book has photos of some neat projects, however, there is one page of basic 'instructions' which is not helpful at all. There is no advice on selecting wood/branches, bending them, curing them, finishing/varnishing etc., nor is there instruction (except for screws and a very basic tenon on the aforementioned instruction page)on how to attach the pieces. The only 'directions' are simple illustrations of what order to put the pieces together in. A real disappointment.

Canadian Art in the Twentieth Century is a survey of the richest, most controversial and perhaps most thoroughly confusing centuries in the whole history of the visual arts in Canada - the period from 1900 to the present. Lt. Charles B. Gatewood (1853–1896), an educated Virginian, served in the Sixth U.S. Cavalry as the commander of Indian scouts. Gatewood was largely accepted by the Native peoples with whom he worked because of his efforts to understand their cultures. It was this connection that Gatewood formed with the Indians, and with Geronimo and Naiche in particular, that led to his involvement in the last Apache war and his work for Indian rights.
Realizing that he had more experience dealing with Native peoples than other lieutenants serving on the frontier, Gatewood decided to record his experiences. Although he died before he completed his project, the work he left behind remains an important firsthand account of his life as a commander of Apache scouts and as a military commandant of the White Mountain Indian Reservation. Louis Kraft presents Gatewood’s previously unpublished account, punctuating it with an introduction, additional text that fills in the gaps in Gatewood’s narrative, detailed notes, and an epilogue. Kraft’s work offers new background information on Gatewood and discusses the manuscript as a fresh account of how Gatewood viewed the events in which he took part.

RECOGNITION AT LAST.......2006-10-12
Louis Kraft writes sensational books, my first knowledge of him came from GATEWOOD AND GERONIMO (New Mexico Press, 2000), which was also a History Book Club selection. And for being an "independant historian" he has turned out several very good books of history, this being a notable one.
Unless one has read on the Apache wars in Arizona Territory, 1878-1886, the name Charles B. Gatewood may have very little meaning. But finally due this book and the efforts of Mr. Kraft, Lt. Gatewood is at last receiving some well deserved historical attention.
Within a couple years of being posted to Arizona, Lt. Gatewood was in charge of the Apache Scouts and pretty much the key man concerning operational relations with the Apaches. Now, from Mr. Kraft and the University of Nebraska we can read Lt. Gatewood's 'recorded experiences', but only up to a point, for Lt. Gatewood died before he could complete them. What we receive here though is a valuable primary source printed for the first time.
Have interest in the Indian Fighting Army in late Arizona Territory Apache Wars? Then you cannot pass this book up.

Louis Kraft does exactly what you're supposed to do with a memoir--he illuminates Gatewood's own words and Gatewood's life. Gatewood's description of meetings with the Apache, of life trying to manage the reservation, is absolutely priceless but Kraft puts the lieutenant into the broader context of his time and circumstance. Gatewood is a man worth knowing, and Kraft does an excellent job of introducing him to us. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

The two pre-eminent warriors of the Apache Wars between 1878 and 1886, Lieutenant Charles B. Gatewood of the Sixth United States Cavalry and Chiricahua leader Geronimo, respected one another in peace and feared one another in war. Within two years of his posting to Arizona in 1878, Gatewood became the army's premier “Apache man” as both a commander of Apache scouts and a reservation administrator, but his equitable treatment of Indians aroused the enmity of civilian and military detractors, and the army shunned him. In the late 1870s Geronimo, a medicine man, emerged as a brilliant Chiricahua leader and fiercely resisted his people's incarceration on inhospitable federal reservations. His fight for freedom, often bloody, in New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico triggered the deployment of hundreds of United States and Mexican troops and Apache Scouts to hunt him and his people. In the end, the United States Army recalled Gatewood to Apache service, ordering him into the Sierra Madre of northern Mexico to locate Geronimo and negotiate his band's surrender. Showing the depravity and desperation of the Apache wars, Louis Kraft dramatically recreates Gatewood's final mission and poignantly recalls the United States government's betrayal of the Chiricahuas, Geronimo, and Gatewood at the campaign's end.
Parallels the lives of Gatewood and Geronimo as events drive them toward their historic meeting in Mexico in 1886—a meeting that marked the beginning of the end of the last Apache war.

If you don't feel capable of wading through the Western history in this book, I suggest you see the movie "Geronimo." It's an excellent, slightly-fictionalized story of the Apache war chief Geronimo played by Wes Studi and Lt. Charles Gatewood played by Jason Patric.
Gatewood, the U.S. army's foremost expert on the Apaches, persuaded Geronimo to surrender in 1886. Both Geronimo and Gatewood were betrayed by the U.S. government. Geronimo was sent to Florida to prison; Gateway was sent to oblivion, remaining a lieutenant until the end of his military career.
Geronimo is remarkable as a cunning, cruel guerilla leader fighting to keep his freedom from the encroaching Whites; Gatewood is remarkable for the integrity he brought to his job as an indian agent and soldier. It's comforting to see Gatewood's qualities are remembered in book and movie long after more conventionally successful men have been forgotten.
This book maintains a high standard of accuracy and scholarship. It tells one of the best stories from the old West.

I have not counted the number of books and papers regarding Geronimo's surrender but they are many. Here are the facts, easy to read, accurate, and presented in a very enjoyable read. The author has done an excellent job presenting to the common man the story of bravery, death, and hardship of the early American soldier, and the betrayal of the American Indian. Many thanks to the author and publisher. Where are the awards for them?

Most historical accounts of Geronimo and the lengthy struggle of his Apache warriors against white settlement have focused upon either the Chiricahua leader himself, or the two U.S. Army generals usually credited with forcing their bitter surrender. George Crook and Nelson Miles were indeed instrumental in planning and leading the campaigns that hounded the remnants of the Apache people into their inevitable subjugation. Neither, however, could convince the holdouts ot lay down their arms and put themselves at the white man's mercy. That role fell to a weary cavalry lieutenant, Charles B. Gatewood, who had won the Indians' grudging respect through hard fighting and his sympathy to their plight. In the course of a final meeting, which was as poignant as it was historical, Gatewood at length persuaded the exhausted "renegades" to lay down their arms to General
Miles, and to accept his offer of farmland and aid. When Geronimo did so, the last native resistance to federal hegemony came to an end. Ultimately, though, Geronimo and Lieutenant Gatewood were betrayed by the federal government.
Louis Kraft has written an important and historically significant study of the final phase of the Apache Wars. Unusual for such books, this one is as readable as popular history, and it will be enjoyed by those who have an interest in looking behind the scenes of history. The book is a fine reminder that earnest, hardworking and suffering people were responsible for the events in their textbooks.

This recent addition to the parallel lives genre is a superbly told tale of the vicious Apache wars of the 1880s in Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico. Drawing upon a variety of original sources, Kraft (Custer and the Cheyenne) reconstructs the complex story of the famous Chiricahua leader Geronimo, a medicine man who came forward as a tribal leader and headed resistance to the coerced settlement of his people on reservations where they were to become farmers instead of nomadic hunters. Lt. Charles B. Gatewood of the 6th U.S. Cavalry was posted to Arizona in 1878 and became a respected leader of Apache scouts, who tracked Apache guerrillas for the U.S. The frail lieutenant, sent to administer the Apache reservation, seemingly treated his charges fairly, earning the enmity of civilians and army brass, which led to a stalemated career and a lengthy court case brought by a man whom Gatewood arrested for defrauding Apaches. After meeting at various times and maintaining a mutual respect, Gatewood and Geronimo came together again in 1886, when the former was ordered to track the latter to Mexico and convince him to surrender, even as columns of American and Mexican troops searched for Geronimo's elusive group. The tension and frustrations of what was Gatewood's final mission are palpable, as he convinces Geronimo to allow the tribe's "relocation" to Florida. Gatewood, who gets much fuller treatment here than his counterpart, never got his due for brilliant service in tragically misguided cause, and Geronimo never again saw his homeland or many of his family, from whom he was separated.

"Gatewood and Geronimo" by Louis Kraft documents the heroic deeds of a man of unheralded greatness, of one Charles B. Gatewood. Many lesser men rose to the rank of general while Gatewood died holding the same rank he held when he played the key role in efecting the surrender of the formidable Apache warrior, Geronimo. The surrender of Geronimo effectively ended the American Indian Wars. Kraft's volume brings focus on the long neglected importance of Gatewood's role in American history, and on the long term effects that one ordinary man's moral integrity can have on human history, even though it was ignored, and even despised while Gatewood was alive.
