Book Description
In 1566, Elizabeth Tudor faces tremendous opposition from Parliament for ruling England without the help of a husband. Instead, she turns to her Privy Plot Council for help, only to discover from her royal herbalist that a woman has drowned in a tub of starch. Soon another garment worker soon meets the same rigid fate. Elizabeth becomes unbending in her attempts to solve the murders, as well as iron out the problems of her kingdom. But with her list of suspects growing—and firm evidence pointing to those she trusts the most—Elizabeth must hang the murderer out to dry or risk losing her reign… or her life.

Fashioneably Entertaining.......2007-02-02
Karen Harper, in her Queen Elizabeth series, expertly mixes history and her-story to entertain, delight -- and subtly highlight the very real and serious issues that faced the long-reigning English monarch. Issues within and without the kingdom beset her during her long reign; her adroit handling gave England a historic period of peace and prosperity. As towering a figure as Elizabeth is, I find myself drawn even more to the subcharacters who people each book. They're appealing, real and become friends, to care about and cheer for. I look forward to the next book in the series.
THE FATAL FASHIONE.......2007-01-03
I ENJOY THIS SERIES OF ELIZABETH I MYSTERIES. HER ELIZABETH LOOK A LIKE IS ALMOST AS MUCH OF A HEROINE AS ELIZABETH. PICTURES OF THE COURT AND THE ENEMIES AND FRIENDS OF THE QUEEN ARE WELL DRAWN. THIS IS A SERIES TO BE READ EITHER IN A ROW OR SINGLY. hARPER'S CHARACTERS ALWAYS SEEM TRUE, ESPECIALLY THE WOMEN. HISTORY AND FASHIONS MAKE UP A GOOD DEAL OF HARPER'S BOOKS AND ARE MOST INTERESTING
Can't wait for the next installment.......2006-05-14
My taste in ficton is mostly for female detectives and non for non-ficton Elizabeth I, her life and times... here is the best of both worlds -- this is the eighth in the series, one for each of the first eight years of Elizabeth's reign... Harper weaves known historical facts into her books were Elizabeth is the investigator, Queen and champion for justice and honor... Harper has creatively answered questions of Elizabeth's reign and her fictional filling in the blanks reads so well that right now I'm not sure what is fact and what is ficton... My interest in the everyday lives of Londoner's is always rewarded... I'm not a scholar and Harper's historical ficton has inspired me to read more 'serious' books about the period... although I must admit a warm cozy feeling when a new edition in this series comes out and I curl up on the couch and join the Privy Council Gang on their journey... my only disappointment is that I will have to wait until 2007 for the next book... Brava!
History AND a mystery -- terrific!.......2006-03-24
Being very picky about the mysteries I read, but liking anything to do with Tudor England, I wasn't sure what to think when I picked up "Fatal Fashione." The idea about Elizabeth I of England as a solver of crimes and mysteries was a little out of the box as far as I was concerned, but I decided to give it a try.
I'm very glad I invested both the time and the money in this one. In addition to outlining the atmosphere of Elizabethan England through a lot of great description that moves along, Harper provides readers with a great "whodunit," to the point that no one is sure who killed the starcher and laundress until very near the end. And like a good "whodunit," she makes the motive work.
Her characterizations are terrific as well -- Harper brings Elizabeth I across as a feisty, "never say die," compassionate figure, one is deserving of the crown of England and the loyalty of her subjects.
The only problem I had with this book is that it strained my imagination to think that a Queen with the responsibilities of Elizabeth I had time to run around and solve mysteries while the country ran itself (this was the time before English royalty was largely ceremonial -- kings and queens actually made life and death decisions about their subjects).
Yet Harper manages to make it work.
In short, Harper does what authors are supposed to do -- to take care of their readers by introducing likeable characters.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy and read her other books.

The Fatal Fashione: An Elizabeth I Mystery.......2006-03-15
As an avid reader of both mystery and British history books I found this book to be an enjoyable and quick read. My taste in mystery novels runs from the LA Noir of James Ellroy, to the "Cozy" mystery novels of P.D. James and Elizabeth George. I also enjoy reading the History of Britian and historical novels. The combination of history and mystery was delightful. This book is the last in a series by Karen Harper, but I found that this book can stand on its own, without having read the other books. I will definitley read more Elizabeth I Mysteries while waiting for new books written by my favorite authors.

An EXCELLENT World of Darkness novel!!! HIGHLY recommended!.......2001-06-18
This is the only good White Wolf novel that I've read so far. It is VERY enjoyable! I have to admit, I had no interest in Changeling before reading this, but now my interest has been piqued. The writing is great, the story is compelling and is set in Toronto (one of my favorite cities in the world!) After having read this, I'm dying to go back there (I even bought a MAP of the city to follow along where the characters went in certain parts of the book!) Kudos, Don Bassingthwaite!!!
Great merging of all different 'dark realms'.......1998-10-11
I really liked the book a lot. It was refreshing to see a couple queer characters, and really great to watch the interactions between the changeling, vampire and mage communities.
One of the best books in the World of Darkness series........1997-10-31
As all WoD Vampire books, it contains plots and subplots, intrigue and backstabbing. I usually dislike Changeling a lot, but the mix of Vampires and Changelings in this book is awesome. If you like the WoD series, all I can say is: READ IT!! :)

Machines that Murder.......2007-04-28
Landing on a new planet is a danger every time, and Selm II is no exception.
The specialist didnt like it. There were no cities visable from space, no broadcatss or transmissions on the airwaves - yet the wrecked war machines of an advanced technology littered the rich pastures of the planet. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of crumpled and gigantic weapons of war, a graveyard of destruction stretching almost to the lifeless horizon. But the war wasn't over...and they weren't all wrecks.
Customer Reviews:
Love this book!!!.......2006-10-26
I've used this book for numerous banners. The designs are wonderful...very easy to duplicate and look beautiful. So many books only have one or two ideas that really get my attention. This one is loaded with not only great designs, but beautiful wording. It's a real favorite of mine.
Quick and Easy Banner Designs.......2006-07-14
Our team used several of the ideas in this book and they went together like clockwork. A really great book.
Book arrived Monday. . . banner hanging in church by Sunday.......2005-04-04
I had wanted to start a banner ministry for years. After our pastor mentioned it to me, I decided it was time to jump in and do it. I purchased this book and another by the same author. I received the books on Monday and had a banner ready by Sunday. The timesaving and money saving tips are wonderful. If I were to have tried making one on my own without this book, I would have never gotten finished. The directions are clear and easy to follow. If you have been thinking of starting a banner ministry for your church, this is the book to start with.
Nice ideas but no color.......2004-03-11
The only color in this book is the cover of the book. I would like to see the banners in color. The ideas are great but...
Nice ideas.......2000-12-16
I have made a number of banners for my church and this book has offered me some nice ideas. It has much to offer both beginners and advanced banner artists. It is laid out by church season, which I found helpful. The graphics are clear and varied. Some are traditional, but many are quite modern. It even offers color suggestions. The only part that I was not excited about was that almost all of the banners had some kind of script incorporated into them. I many times let the pattern and graphic stand alone without using the words.

Book Description
This field guide at last provides an authoritative and handy source for identifying amphibians and reptiles of Costa Rica's renowned Atlantic lowland tropical forests. Colorful frogs, lizards that can run across water, snapping turtles, spotted geckos, boa constrictors, crocodiles, and many other fascinating yet secretive species of amphibians and reptiles flourish in the region's myriad microhabitats. The La Selva Biological Station, a protected reserve, boasts a rich biota, making it and the surrounding area one of the most visited tropical forest sites in the world.
For travelers, ecotourists, and biologists, this comprehensive guide, written by two distinguished experts on the area's amphibians and reptiles, will be an essential resource while visiting La Selva and the surrounding tropical forests of Costa Rica. In addition to providing reliable field identification, it will help visitors to this area better understand the overall role of Central American amphibians and reptiles in the natural world as well as conservation efforts now being undertaken to ensure the survival of these intriguing creatures.
* 138 frogs, lizards, snakes, and crocodiles are included in keys based primarily on color patterns for easy identification
* Each species is illustrated with a color photograph; the guide also features range maps and black-and-white drawings
* Includes an overview of the natural history of each amphibian and reptile and gives helpful tips on where to observe them
Customer Reviews:
Great book, great price.......2005-02-03
I took this book on a recent research trip to a preserve near La Selva, and used it daily. Not just a field guide with pretty pictures, this book contains a key to the species. Since it is specific to this area of the country, it cut down on the amount of material that had to be sorted through to ID organisms. I could quickly key out species without having to worry about whether or not this was the right area for that particular species. The photos were clear and beautiful, with different color phases and sexual dimorphisms illustrated. If you are traveling to this specific area of Costa Rica, this book is really useful. It's small, lightweight, easy to use, and CHEAP!
Book Description
The first ever comprehensive guide to the amphibians and reptiles of Costa Rica. This book contains descriptions of the majority of the country's species. In addition to 86 color pages and 100 black and white plates, also included is a complete species list, an illustrated glossary and an exhaustive bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
Will probably be the standard field guide to Costa Rican herps for years to come.......2006-04-26
This is far and away the best field guide to Costa Rican amphibians and reptiles. At 305 pages long it provides photographs, line drawings and description for most of the country's 400+ species strong herpetofauna. Most of the species not covered are those that require laboratory conditions (e.g. dissection) for unequivocal identification. For those wanting a complete treatment, Jay Savage's "Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica" (available on Amazon, ISBN: 0226735370) is marvelous but not meant for the field. So, when all's said and done, this is the handy guide that all naturalists will want to take on a trip to Costa Rica. To that end, the book is a nice size (8 x 5"), is printed on quality paper and is fairly well bound, though the covers are flimsy. Information is clearly presented and (apart from the 86 central color plates) helpful illustrations are sprinkled throughout the text. Useful introductions are provided to orders and families. Surprisingly there are no maps - they would have been an additional identification aid. Nevertheless, this is an essential field guide and well worth the price.
Handy Field Guide, Readable Book........2006-02-08
I used this book as a field guide in costa rica and found it to be on par with what I expect of a field guide. Good pictures, decent descriptions and a fair amount of general information. With the wealth of Herpofauna in Costa Rica a book of this small size can not go indepth as I would like, but the size makes it easy to take on a trip and a good read for anyone just getting there feet wet in costa rican reptiles.
However if you want the full and complete story of these amazing animals then check out Jay Savage's book on Costa Rican reptiles. To big to take on trips, but to great to pass up.

Like a Reps & Amps Bible.......2002-04-16
Twan Leenders has used his extraordinary knowledge and cool wit to create what is truly a revised Bible for the herpetological world. I recently ventured to Costa Rica on a field expedition in attempts to create an inventory of species in a certain area of rainforest, and had Twan's book with me 24/7. Not only is the information detailed and well-thought out; it is interesting to read and inspiring to the naturalist. I have had the pleasure of meeting Twan Leenders and can say with all honesty that he is one of the most respectable and knowledgable herpetologists in the field. Thank you Twan for your talent and depth of character, and for understanding and promoting the integrity of our living resources.

A Must Have for the Matchbox Collector.......1998-03-19
Of all of the reference guides I own, I use two. This is one of those two. This book is an invaluable resource for identifying Matchbox models. It has several indexes to use--chronological, by name and by issue number. I would recommend that any Matchbox collector add this book to their reference library.

Decorative Paint Recipes is a well-designed and beautifully illustrated book about the world of decorative paint applications for nearly every part of the home. "A Good Foundation," the first of three main sections, includes all of the basics on colors, varieties of paints (for example, there are paints made specifically for application on glass), mixing paints, solvents, tools and equipment, and preparation. The second section, "Techniques," is essentially a manual covering how to paint and how to use the tools and materials to create spectacular, professional results. "Projects and Designs," which makes up the largest portion of the book, contains plans for unusual, elegant, and whimsical wall treatments; exciting border designs; painted doors with nature themes; cabinets; fabric screens; delightfully individualized picture frames; and dozens more projects that are diverse enough to appeal to the style and taste of almost anyone.

Customer Reviews:
good for non-do-it-yourselfers.......2001-12-13
This book is packed with innovative ideas for simple paint makeovers. I normally do not involve myself with painting tasks and even my own projects turned out nicely.
The only thing that might have helped is more of an explaination on what kind of and where to purchase some of the paints and quality brushes.
This is a BUY book. It would make a wonderful gift for people who like to work with there hands around the home.
Wonderful, lots of great ideas.......2000-07-28
This is a wonderful book with a lot of different projects, techniques and styles. It is great for anyone wanting to add special touches and effects to their home.
The book starts out overview of materials including color photos of all the tools you will need. There is also guide to mixing paints and a great chart on various materials for painting. There are many wonderful effects that can be achieved by adding your own pigments or otherwise modifying standard off the shelf paints. Numerous techniques follow including colorwashing, dry brushing, rubbing off, sponging, graining, aging, stippling, combing, stucco, embossing, stenciling, stamping and creating a few stone finishes. There are also instructions for painting on glass and using masks or resists such as wax.
Over 25 projects are included for walls, floors, windows, furniture and accessories as well. Some projects include striped Greek vases, checkerboard wall, slot-machine counter front, and colorwashed flowers, daisy-strewn floorboards, cork-tile games floor, and a mosaic border. My favorite projects were the whimsical window frame, fossil tabletop and a beautiful Japanese style fabric screen. There are also some great design motifs such as shells, artichokes, and boats. Conveniently, small templates, which you can enlarge, are included for all the projects.
Most of the projects use latex or acrylic paint, only a few use oils. Step-by-step directions are given for each of these techniques or projects. Close-up photos show each technique in a few different colors and recipes are given for each one. Some of the effects and projects have pictures of finished rooms or objects done with them.
Almost all of the techniques here, and more, are also covered in Chronicle's companion book, Paint Recipes. What sets this book apart is that it is project oriented, focusing on the application of the recipes to the many decorative projects I've described. This is a great source of technical know how and artistic inspiration.
