The Gutter and the Grave.......2007-08-31
What a great book. This is my first Ed McBain's book and I'm already looking forward the next one. His style remembers me of Lawrence Block and Matt Cordell is a good pair to Block's Matt Scuder. The dialogs are great and the plot is simple and very well designed.
This book and the Lawrence Block's The Grifter's Game are the best on the Hard Case Crime series.
Don't loose it. you won't regret.
Ed McBain classic a welcome addition to HARD CASE CRIME.......2007-08-14
Ed McBain is a classic crime writer with a nack for writing books that flow smoothly and keep everyone entertained. This was no exception. A little bit dated with it's hep-cat talk and ends a little too predictabely, it still held up very well. Nice little easy read.
Gutter Gumshoe is Great.......2007-06-03
There are a few improbabilities in this story, things that, in terms of suspended disbelief, you have to wonder if the author might expect too much from his readership. An ex-detective has been living as a homeless alcoholic for five years after the collapse of his marriage. He takes on a case of theft as a favor to an old acquaintance. This case quickly turns into one of murder. Our hero's mind has not become completely stewed thanks to the demon drink, though. He still possesses remarkable athleticism and stereotypical prowess with the ladies.
And yet, this is a rattling good yarn. Ed McBain was truly a master of his craft. I can't claim to have read many books by him (in fact, the only other book I've read by him is `The Blackboard Jungle' which he wrote as Evan Hunter), but I know good writing when I see it, and I see it here. This novel was originally published in 1958 under one of McBain's other pseudonyms, Curt Cannon, under the title `I'm Cannon - For Hire'.
Our hero, Matt Cordell, tells this story in the first person, and, thanks to McBain's superlative writing, the story comes to life amid New York's steaming hot summer. The dialogue is wonderfully snappy, in the manner of a classic film noir. I had Bogart's voice in my head as I read Cordell's narration. There are also some wonderfully descriptive passages. In particular, there's a scene where Cordell wants to question a musician who's taking part in a late night jam session. McBain's writing is so sharp that you can hear the music as he describes the musicians' actions. You can imagine the smoky, sweaty scene as the players do their stuff in front of their rapt audience. Cordell opines that, "racial prejudice would evaporate if everyone were taught to play an instrument. The sound is the thing and music has its own color."
The whodunit aspect is perhaps not handled as well as it could have been. That said, I didn't guess who the killer was, but the ending felt forced. The story seemed to be flowing in top gear when the author suddenly applies the brakes and wraps things up. Nevertheless, this is highly recommended for sheer entertainment with a few minor reservations in the plausibility department. `The Gutter and the Grave' is another novel from the Hard Case Crime imprint. Also recommended from this particular series is Gil Brewer's `The Vengeful Virgin'.
Revamped noir highlights a past master.......2007-05-26
Originally published under the late Ed McBain's pseudonym "Curt Cannon" as I'm Cannon--For Hire (1958), this reissue has been revised for modern readers without sacrificing its pulpster roots. In a noirish twist on the standard P.I. tale, Matt Cordell, 32 or 33, has quit the shamus trade due to his unfaithful wife. Nowadays beaten down, he's a self-admitted hobo panhandling for drinks in NYC's Bowery. A schoolmate from the old neighborhood, Johnny Bridges, now owning a tailor shop, looks up Cordell to solve a petty money theft. Of course, murder quickly enters the plot. Cordell, a suspect, rises above his personal and professional demons to finish up one last, glorious case. He clashes with an ambitious club singer (a "frail"), a rival P.I. (Cordell once broke his nose), a jaded homicide cop, and a cast of other sturdy characters. The mystery isn't the draw here. Reveling in McBain's laconic prose style and his mastery of depicting the 1950s NYC is. The jazz scenes McBain writes are special treats. If you like the big city detective pulps operating in a gritty summer, this title is worth a try.
A fun, badly-written pulp noir novel.......2007-05-21
THE GUTTER AND THE GRAVE was assigned to me as part of my semester reading. In my adviser's words, "It shows that good writers start out as bad writers." Originally published under McBain's "Curt Cannon" pen name, it's subsequently been re-released under the moniker that brought him so much fame with his 87th Precinct series of police procedurals. So, being the dutiful student that I am, I ponied up the money for this pulp classic and dove right in.
The result? Let's just say my adviser was right: All good writers start out as bad ones.
Where narrative, dialogue, and characterization are concerned, THE GUTTER AND THE GRAVE is a mess. There's a good chance anyone reading this review could probably write either at the same level or better than McBain did in this novel. Yes, it's that bad. It's like reading a fifth-grader's take on a classic noir film. Really, it's just all over the place.
And yet, on another level, it has everything you'd ever want in a pulp novel. Ultra-melodramatic and replete with sex, death, twists and turns, brutish thugs, alcohol, a femme fatale, and bumbling police, G&G is a testament to its noir origins, a pulp family dinner where everybody's packing the heat. For this reason, if you're into the genre like I am then you can come away from reading G&G with the satisfaction of having taken a nice jaunt down Pulp Memory Lane. Don't get me wrong: It's no Chandler or Hammett, or even Spillane, but it's got enough of what you love about the pulps to enjoy it for what it's worth.
If you like your fiction serious, go pick up WAITING by Ha Jin. If you like your mysteries serious, read MYSTIC RIVER by Dennis Lehane. If you can appreciate the grandfathers of the genre, even in all their pulpy goodness, read THE GUTTER AND THE GRAVE by Ed McBain and enjoy the kick in the pants.

slow.......2005-06-30
Everything I wrote in my review of the Door into Fire (pls. see) can be repeated for the second part of this most atypical fantasy serial.
Its main strength lies in the fascinating world created by Ms Duane, its main charm in the detailed depiction of characters who think much more than they act.
In this second part the author seems to concentrate on Segnbora, a multilayered, faceted woman very different from the usual she-warrior; Ms Duane uses her to let us into a much deeper insight of her personal phylosophy (weltanschauung) and manages to keep the reader's interest high.
On the other hand she neglects all the others, even the lovely Sunspark, whose wit was one of the main asset of the first part. The loss is painful, especially because the "others" were so endearing in the first volume. As a consequence every time Segnbora is not involved the story becomes slow, sometimes it even drags.
Hardly an excusable mistake considering the years Ms Duane allowed herself to write the three volumes (the fourth is at the time still unpublished).
To Speak of Dragons.......2003-09-05
The Door Into Shadow (1984) is the second novel in the Tale of Five series, following The Door Into Fire. In the previous volume, the companions faced the death of their souls within the Hold in the Waste and Herewiss became one with his Flame to protect them. After the soul-eaters are destroyed, Freelorn decides that it is time to return to Arlen to claim the throne.
In this novel, Herewiss has a true dream about the Shadow on the night before leaving the Hold. This dream convinces him that he has to learn to control his Flame immediately, so the companions leave for Morrowfane at first light. There the spirits guide Herewiss in using his Flame. However, Segnbora has another experience at Morrowfane; she finds herself hosting the persona of the dragon Hasai. Moreover, this dragon brings a cloud of other dragon minds with him.
Segnbora finds the dragons deep within her mind. She learns much about their history and purpose and they learn much about her, delving even deeper within her mind and forcing her to confront her fears. Gradually, she becomes a hybrid of human and dragon, speaking with the tongue of dragons and casting a dragon shadow.
The companions join with Eftgan, Queen of Darthen, and her army to face the forces of the Shadow. Thousands of Reavers are pouring out of Barachael Pass and this time they have sorcerers of their own. The companions set out to close the pass.
Highly recommended for Duane fans and anyone else who enjoys tales of sword and sorcery with serious character development.
-Arthur W. Jordin
A Worthy Sequel.......2000-12-04
This is one of the very few sequels I would say honestly surpasses the original. _Door Into Shadow_ takes the ideas introduced in _Door Into Fire_, and brings them further into the light: Segnbora d'Welcaen tai-Enraesi is the protagonist, and through her eyes, the reader will meet the Queen who cheated death, face the darker side of spirituality... and make the acquaintance of a Dragon who could change one's perspective on that mythical species forever. Wonderfully thought-provoking, _Door Into Shadow_ doesn't flinch away from any issues, instead facing them head-on and taking us along for the ride. It would be worth reading for the chance to meet Hasai (and see what becomes of Herewiss & Co.) alone; add in the songs, the legends, the magic, the tragedies, and the joys, and it becomes a literary jewel beyond price. Buy it if you can find it!
most excellent how about a reprint of the entire series.......1999-06-27
Ms Duane creates a world where love is all that is important. This is enshrined in the Goddess who takes a very real hand in what is going on. I have reccomended this book to many people, old and young. I have especially reccomended it to a young friend who "came out" to me and was feeling very down. He was able to live again so to speak believing that how he felt about himself was right for him.
Reprint! Reprint!.......1999-04-17
After *years* of searching second-hand bookshops, I finally found this sequal to The Door Into Fire, and if anything it's even better than the first book. Segnbora is a wonderful character - strong, complex and ambiguous. I also love Duane's Goddess religion, more aspects of which are revealed in this book. Now I face more years of looking for the third one. REPRINT THIS SERIES!

Puerto Rican Cooking.......2007-01-29
Wonderful book to own. I love Latin inspired recipes, and they are all in here. I also own "Daisy Cooks", and between these two books I can entertain my Puerto Rican friends here in South Florida as if I was Hispanic myself (which I am not). The ingredients are easy to get in ethnic and Supermarkets, so are the spices, herbs, the meats, the fish etc. Many storebought, premixed "Spanish" meals in bags or in the freezer section can be incorporated, so as to appear as made from scratch. Yummy either way!
Very Authentic.......2006-12-06
I have owned this book for several years. Everytime I use it my home takes on the aroma of my Grandmother's house. I highly recommend this book for your yourself and your friends.
This book brought a taste of home to Kansas.......2006-05-14
I live in Kansas and am very familiar with Mexican cuisine, my boyfriend is from New york City and grew up with Puerto Rican cuisine at home, he has asked me for years to make different things for him, things his mother made (I quickly discovered Mexican food was not similar at all, besides I am not Mexican, a homestyle meal for me would have mashed potatoes and gravy, Roast beef and green beans). She makes her recipes from memory and has not been a good resource, this book has all of the foods that remind him of home, things that he considers traditional. The recipes are titled in English and Spanish so I can search the book for a recipe that sounds similar to what he has described and he can see the title in Spanish and knows exactly what it is. There are recipes for Traditinal Chicken and Rice, Pasteles, Fried pork chops and Salchichas con Arroz. All things he missed very much I can hardly keep him out of the food before it is done. There are also recipes which appeal to me that include fruit and tend to be lighter dishes that sound more Caribbean to me. At the very beginning of this book there is a section covering the Puerto Rican pantry that describes exotic ingredients and gives recipes to make many of them if you cannot find them in the store and substitution ideas. When I first bought this book I had a very hard time finding the ingredients, I have since become familiar with the Mexican markets that carry many of the specialty items and discovered the Asian market has been a very important resource. I may not always enjoy the traditional food but he insists that it tastes almost as good as his mother's so the author definitely used traditional flavors and recipes and added some updated ones to appeal to a wider audience, we've both been happy with this book it was an invaluable find.

The loss of a pet companion can be as devastating as the death of a human loved one. Rainbows and Bridges offers an array of thoughtful ways to deal with that loss. Featuring inspirational ideas, exercises, and quotations, this kit includes a frame for the photo of a beloved pet; a detailed guidebook to work through the sorrow and grief attendant on this event; a journal/scrapbook to celebrate the pet’s life; and cards to facilitate religious, secular, or nature-based memorial rituals and healing. Authors Allen and Linda Anderson use these components to address the spectrum of feelings that can arise — despair, loneliness, anger, alienation, disappointment, and self-doubt. They candidly recount their own experiences with pet loss and present the experiences of others who have struggled and recovered. Rainbows and Bridges gently guides the bereaved through the process of recalling the past, grieving in the present, and finding hope in the future.

Really, really helped.......2007-01-28
This is one of the few books that helped pull me through. Others were very religious or didn't reach the part that I needed to start healing. This book was compassionate and did everything I needed to start my healing process. It supports your grief and allows you to grieve and then helps you start your healing process. It's absolutely amazing. The journals, the memorial cards, and the book are all sensational.
Animal Companion Memorial Kit.......2006-04-07
I recently lost my little dog, Toby, through an animal attack. I have been devastated. Toby was my heart. In the local bookstore I asked if she had anything on pet loss and she showed me this book. I read it through and found so much comfort. No where else had I come across such inspirational material with regards to our beloved animal friends. I wrote his name an the cards, and reread the book. The journal was enormously helpful and I wrote the things about him I didn't want to forget . From there I made a small scrap book, using the paragraphs I'd written in the journal.
I wouldn't find the need to do this with all my animal companions, but Toby was a special friend, and this kit helped me a great deal towards the beginnings of healing.
Covers the entire process from initial loss to phrases of grieving and considering a new pet.......2005-12-05
Rainbows & Bridges is the first set to address the need for mourning the death of an animal in the family, offering the clergy member authors' insights on healing. It's more than a book - it's a kit of materials which walks adults, kids and even other household pets through the grieving process, identifying 'rainbows' and 'bridges' which allow the user to move from grieving to recovery. From what things should never be said to someone whose pet has died to how to support a person suffering from pet loss and how kids and adults adjust, Rainbows & Bridges covers the entire process from initial loss to phrases of grieving and considering a new pet.
You Are Not Alone.......2005-10-14
The kit is wonderful and I know it will help a lot of people through the grief that comes from losing a beloved pet. Just knowing they are not alone in that grief will be healing. Hearing the stories of other people who have experienced what they are experiencing will give them the courage to go on.
A Must Have for Animal Lovers!.......2005-10-13
I am thrilled to have this beautifully presented resource in my home office now. For decades I've been working with people and their pets as a minister, teacher, healing arts practitioner and writer, and I have never seen anything like this loving work. Allen and Linda Anderson have compiled an exquisite collection, a warm and graceful toolbox that's destined to become a classic for helping us honor our animal kin. Rainbows And Bridges An Animal Companion Memorial Kit has jumped to the top of my holiday shopping list for gifting family, friends, neighbors, students, clients and congregants. FABULOUS!.......2007-07-26
How in the world can anyone say the items in this book dont relate to each other. Sounds like you have NO sense of decorating! This book is one of the best books I have ever seen. It is unbelieveable all the ideas that are in this book! Definately a book I will keep and read over and over! Great ideas, inspiration and pictures, but only if you have an open mind and a creative style will you understand this book! Absolutely AMAZING!!!

Fantastic Photography that shows a variety of styles!.......2000-05-05
I am a fan of Chris Mead, and he didn't let me down with thisbook. I love the way many of the homes are decorated in this book. Ilove white walls, and I am thrilled to see so many of them in this book. For all those decorator's that say "Give your home warmth with wall color, " here is my rebuttal. I LOVE the peacefulness of white walls and this book inadvertantly demonstrates just how wonderful all the flea market finds look against a white backdrop. The styles provided in this book are varied and clearly loved by the home owners. A wide range of economic approaches are demonstrated in this spectrum of flea market finds. A fun, informative book with wonderful pictures to garner ideas.
I also recommend another book, Flea Market Decorating.......2000-03-24
This is a delightful book, but I also recommend a new book that's just out. It's Flea Market Decorating, which is full of fresh new ideas, especially about recasting old objects in new ways. For me, it captures the fun of going to flea markets and using those little treasures to personalize my home.

i Digital Currents /i explores the growing impact of digital technologies on aesthetic experience and examines the major changes taking place in the role of the artist as social communicator. Just as the rise of photographic techniques in the mid 1800s shattered traditional views about representation, so too have contemporary electronic tools catalyzed new perspectives on art, affecting the way artists see, think, and work, and the ways in which their productions are distributed and communicated. br br Margot Lovejoy recounts the early histories of electronic media for art making - video, computer, the internet - in the new edition of this richly illustrated book. She provides a context for the works of major artists in each media, describes their projects, and discusses the issues and theoretical implications of each to create a foundation for understanding this developing field. br br i Digital Currents /i fills a major gap in our understanding of the relationship between art and technology, and theexciting new cultural conditions we are experiencing.

Book Description
Mary McLeod Bethune devoted her life to advancing equal social, economic, and political rights for blacks. She distinguished herself by creating lasting institutions that trained black women for visible and expanding public leadership roles. Despite her accomplishments, the means, techniques, and actions Bethune employed in fighting for equality have been widely misinterpreted.
Mary McLeod Bethune and Black Women's Political Activism seeks to remedy the misconceptions surrounding this important political figure. Joyce A. Hanson shows that the choices Bethune made often appear contradictory, unless one understands that she was a transitional figure with one foot in the nineteenth century and the other in the twentieth.
