Book Description
Windsor Academy ranks as one of the best New England prep schools money can buy. From its Gothic arches to its ethnic diversity, it looks picture perfect....as long as nobody notices that the headmaster's wife has a student lover and drugs are as available as candy. And when freshman Mark DeAvecca looks out a faux medieval window and sees a body across the campus, he wonders if he's hallucinating-especially when no corpse is found. Since everyone thinks that Mark is a druggie, they all ignore him-until he returns to his dorm room to discover his roommate dead, hanged by the neck from the ceiling. Desperate, Mark calls his mother's friend Gregor Demarkian, former FBI agent and the one person Mark knows will listen. Demarkian is world-weary and ready to retire from his investigative career, yet he can't turn down a plea from a scared kid. And it doesn't take long before Gregor knows something is very wrong at Windsor Academy....something like manipulation, dirty tricks, and murder.

Disappointing resolution.......2007-07-12
(contains spoilers)
The pacing of this tale and some of its characters, chiefly the intriguing headmaster's wife and titillating details about her sex life, keep you reading till the end. But the ending leaves your flat and unsatisfied, as do most of the characters. People who skim money may be despicable, but they are rarely murderers, especially not poisoners. Likewise, psychopaths don't often (ever?) put themselves at the physical mercy of those whom they're blackmailing. And those being blackmailed, however much they may hate it, aren't likely to be the type to kick the chair out from under someone with a noose around his neck, never mind having the strength to do it. Two women who live together, travel together, have a bank account together, spend their lives involved in making illegal money together, and have no other close relationships may not be lesbians, but then again, in all fairness, they might as well be. The faculty at this boarding school widely regards first-year student Mark DeAvecca as a liar, unreliable, stupid, and unlikeable in spite of overwhelming evidence that he is seriously ill physically if not mentally. They heap scorn on him to an extent hard to believe, given the physical description of him and his age.
In addition to these many inconsistencies, the author pulls some bothersome tricks on the reader. She starts the book by giving each suspect a chapter in which we are ostensibly privy to the character's inner life. More than halfway through the novel, she then starts throwing red herrings into the novel thick and fast, each of which casts a suspect in a radically (not to unbelievably) bizarre light, wholly inconsistent with the portrait of the character given earlier.
And, none of the faculty members' characters are presented in any depth. A few unfleshed-out details are given about a poor childhood here, an arrest for murder and anarchy there, maybe a penchant for teenage boys there, but none of the teachers feel like fully fledged human beings. They just seem unpleasant for no real reason.
Lastly, the detective, Gregor Demarkian, appears to have no real character beyond saying he's got the answers and that his longtime girlfriend's behavior is a mystery to him (to him and everyone else--this subplot was a yawner straight out of some kid's Saturday morning cartoon).
There are enough allusions to kinky or illegal sex, drug use, and poison to make you suspend disbelief long enough to reach the end of this novel. Also, the pacing never really flagged, and all the elements of what should have been a satisfying read were there. But somehow, it fell flat--not enough attention to character and just too many events and characters that strained credibility to the snapping point.
Maybe some of this author's other novels were better.
I know these characters.........2007-02-03
....the characters in "The Headmaster's Wife" populated a couple of schools where I taught--insular, self-centered and self-contained, and often rife with intrigue and petty jealousy. The only thing my schools were missing was the headmaster's' wife--nobody that glamorous and perverted ever existed in an environment I knew, more's the pity. But this is a very real novel, intent on creating a background which is integral to the action--festering greed and jealousy which can lead to murder. Jane Haddam has written yet another wonderful mystery--not for the impatient and faint of heart, certainly, but one that filled with real people and believable motives, and suspense which sustains the reader until the very last page.
A superbly written mystery.......2006-09-12
I read dozens of mysteries each year, and I have no idea how I only now have stumbled upon Jane Haddam. I'm very glad that I did. Unlike the cookie cutter genre fiction that is all too prevalent, The Headmaster's Wife was totally engrossing, beautifully written and unique. Acerbic, witty, and sometimes unsettling, this book is not for those readers looking for fluff and a quick disposable read. But if you like Elizabeth George and P.D. James, you'll appreciate The Headmaster's Wife. I can't wait to read all the other Demarkian books. Well done.
An Author Who Just Gets Better and Better.......2006-02-06
The Headmaster's Wife
A Gregor Demarkian Novel (Gregor Demarkian)
by Jane Haddam
Windsor Academy. a New England college prep school is the setting for The Headmaster's Wife. Steeped in traditions, distinguished alumni and plenty of money, Windsor seems almost utopian on the surface. Yet, all is not as it may seem! One student appears to be losing his mind or else has some kind of fatal disease; another is already dead, and the place is on the verge of everything but an academic course of intrigue.
In her tale, Jane Haddam introduces us to a whole new cast of characters at Windsor Academy engaged in some pretty strange relational interactions. As prep student Mark DeAvecca starts to lose his footing at Windsor Academy, he calls a friend of his family to ask for help. The man he calls is no ordinary family friend, but Gregor Demarkian, -- a retired FBI agent who has the reputation for almost magical powers in crime solving. In his post-retirement years, Demarkian has developed a media reputation as a volunteer crime solver nicknamed: the "Armenian American Hercule Poirot"
Gregor agrees to come to Windsor to speak to Mark because he was impressed with the young man the few times he had previously met him. There's a secondary motivation for Gregor to take the trip as he is running out of patience with the people on Cavanaugh Street in Philadelphia, as they all tell him he's depressed and needs to go back to taking cases. His girlfriend, Bennis Hannaford, has stopped talking to him and Gregor is beside himself and just doesn't know which way to turn. Fortunately, Mark's call seemed to give him an excuse to make a getaway trip from the folks at home and at the same time still allowing him to avoid taking on a "case" as Mark just seemed to need a listening ear.
Once Gregor arrives in New England, he quickly determines that Mark is terribly sick and that beneath the surface of Windsor Academy lay many secrets and less than academic endeavors. The intrigue mounts from there. Gregor is quickly drawn into a major case and he quickly discovers he hasn't lost his touch.
I truly enjoyed this book. The characters are well developed and distinctive. Each is a true `character' with respect to a collection of somewhat eccentrics. From the Headmaster's Wife onward, Haddam has given us some quirky individuals who have history with one another and some of its not particularly pleasant. The story moves along well and I lost a few nights of decent sleep staying up reading to see what came up next (for me, the true test of whether I enjoy a book).
With 19 previous books in this series, and a few others under her own name and yet another pseudonym, this is Jane Haddam's best yet. Her writing has become better and more interesting. The intrigue and sophistication of the crimes have also grown more complex and fascinating. But as Gregor himself says, evil usually comes down to the simpler things -- secrets, money or sex. And, Windsor Academy has them all!
The Headmaster's Wife is the 20th in the Gregor Demarkian novels that Haddam has written. Having been a loyal follower all through the years, I have to say that some weren't the greatest. However, I really enjoy reading mystery and suspense with a continuing character. If you enjoy mystery and suspense, without too much gore, Jane Haddam's novels are highly recommended. She is a wonderful author to try because there is so much available in used paperbacks of her earlier books in the series that you don't have to wait until her next one to be published if you like them. I myself am also on the lookout for unfamiliar authors who already have a number of books that I haven't read. The Headmaster's Wife is highly recommended as well as all of Jane Haddam's previous Gregor Demarkian books. Daniel J. Maloney, Saint Paul, Minnesota USA
Dissapointed.......2005-10-24
This was the worst book I've read in long time. I couldn't make it past page 75 and I am rarely able to stop a book without finishing it, in this case I couldn't make myself finish it. The characters were not only one-dimensional, but also unappealing. The plot moved incredibly slowly and the book was poorly written, I'm surprised that it made it past the editors as is. If you want to read this book I recommend that you take it out of the library.
Book Description
Margaret Greeve is an outwardly accomplished and finished person: a wit, an intellectual, and the wife of the headmaster of a well-established boarding school for boys. She dwells in elegantly appointed rooms, summers on Cape Cod, and cruises the piney coves of the Northeast. Through a lifetime of deep reading and acute observing, she has encountered blinding instances of beauty and meaning, but nothing really prepared her for the grip of a mortal illness. By turns shrewd, desperate, and comical, her look at death and loss uncovers a depth of sexual feeling, a loving appreciation of lifelong soul mates, and a vision of her place in creation.

Customer Reviews:
another fun and exciting trek story.......2006-09-14
mix some of the best characters in science fiction with an author who KNOWS how to write then and what do you get? A fantastic star trek book.
this books reads like a great, classic star trek episode. Character interaction, a seemingly impossible situation, interesting subplots..everything a fan of star trek likes about the show is in this book..
And the villains...a book like this is usually only as good as its villains and I found the romulans' depiction quite...fascinating, as spock would say. And the villains aren't all romulan either ;)
with lots of tense moments, great dialogue, good character intereraction , a large plot with possibly disastrous repercussions, AND some nice nods and tie ins to several of the original series episodes, and you have a great read on your hands.
highly recommended.
More detail about the Romulan politcial machinations would have been better.......2006-05-02
The Romulan Empire is in deep trouble. A plague is rapidly killing them and the only cure is grown on the planet Canara in Federation space. Fearing that the Federation would use the knowledge to destroy the Empire, the Romulans attempt to take the antidote by force rather than ask for help. However, the Canarans are fiercely loyal to the Federation and strongly oppose the Romulans. While they cannot hope to resist by force of arms, the Canarans set destructive charges that will destroy all of the material that can be used to make the antidote to the plague.
As the story unfolds, we learn a great deal about the Romulan political system, the Praetor is the highest political figure and the position is currently being held by a greedy, self-serving individual. He sends one of the most loyal and effective Romulan commanders on what is a suicide mission into Federation space and also calls back into service an aged commander whose loyalty to the Empire is greater than any personal animosity he has for the Praetor and his political machinations.
There are two subplots that complicate the situation. The first is that the computers on the Enterprise recently underwent maintenance and the technicians decided that they needed more of a personality. Therefore, they programmed the main computer to have a personality, including emotions. The computer falls in love with Kirk and considers him the only person in the universe. It ignores all other members of the crew, so nothing works for anyone else. The crew is largely helpless to do anything about the situation, which is supposed to be amusing. I didn't find it amusing at all, and thought that this subplot was too much of a distraction to the real story. A simple reboot using core memory should have solved the problem.
The second subplot involved Admiral Iota, who hates the Romulans so bad that he barricades himself into auxiliary control on one of the Federation ships and fires on the Romulans. Once again, the crew of the ship is helpless to stop him. This is absurd; no Starfleet vessel would be constructed without some way to disable the weapons outside of auxiliary control. Furthermore, the idea that one man could barricade himself into an area and control the entire ship was one I found ridiculous.
The two subplots spoiled the story for me. Had the author concentrated on the inner workings of the Romulan Empire and the actions of the Praetor and the Romulan commanders, the story would have been much better.
Excellent! A Star Trek Must Read!.......2003-08-11
The timeline for this story is immediately after the original series Star Trek episode, "Tomorrow Is Yesterday". This is where the computer has been reprogrammed to be seductive and affectionate -especially towards Kirk(of course)!
The characters -Romulan and Enterprise, are handled competently.
Some guest appearances:
Yeoman Janice Rand (not a love interest here!)
Ensign Garrovick (from "Obsession")
Lt. Kyle (Transporter Chief)
The plot is fascinating(as Spock would say) and unfolds excellently. The writing is professional and stays right on in the ST Universe. The plot is similar to the ST movie: "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country", but here the Romulans face a disaster. Kirk and McCoy are not captured here either.
If you have to choose a few original ST books to read then choose this one amongst the others.
Read on...
One of the first Trek novels I ever owned, and still good........2002-07-19
A plague of epidemic proportions has struck the Romulan Empire, the only cure for which can be found in Federation space. The Enterprise intercepts a Romulan vessel trying to cross the Neutral Zone, and after a brief but fierce battle, Kirk learns of the plague. But the Enterprise's main computer has fallen in love with him, severely crippling the ship and cutting off all communications from Starfleet. Now Kirk must negotiate to get the vaccine to the Romulans before the Federation declares war, at the whim of the head of Starfleet intelligence who has hated the Romulans throughout his entire career.
Look for the computer to call Kirk "dear", and many other pet names throughout the course of the book. Plenty of well-known and loved "Trek" guest stars make appearances: Ensign Garrovick, Yeoman Janice Rand, Mr. Kyle, among others. "Web of the Romulans" is a truly great piece of classic Trek fiction.
An excellent story........2000-07-29
This is by far the best of the numbered series of Star Trek novels up to the point at which it was written, with the possible exception of #7, "The Wrath Of Khan". The characters are handled competently, the plot is interesting, and the writing is fluent, professional, and lively.
There is a certain similarity between the plot of this story, and the plot of "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country", but that is no fault of this story, since it predates the other. There is also a certain similarity between its plot and that of "Dr. Strangelove", although this is not a comedy. This story is set in the time immediately after the original series Star Trek episode, "Tomorrow Is Yesterday"; the computer has not yet been reprogrammed, and is still overly affectionate toward Kirk.
If you enjoy Star Trek: the original series, you should definitely read this book; it is one of the better books in the Star Trek series. Even if you aren't a big fan, but are only lukewarm toward Star Trek, you should give this book a try.

How Comics Should Be.......2003-11-01
This graphic novel is a collection of Superman comics around the year 2000. Because it is a collection it is not one continuous story but a collection of saome smaller ones that loosely fit together with no real beginning or end. The billing is that this is a "reboot" or chance for the Superman frachise to restart itself. The art is excellent and I found the stories to be very enjoyable although I was a little lost from time to time since I am not a regular reader of comics. Overall I enjoyed this much more than most graphic novels I have read.
A pretty good Superman graphic novel.......2001-08-22
I found "Superman:No Limits" to be a pretty good Superman graphic novel, but as one reviewer commented, it leaves a lot more to be desired because Superman just seems to jump from one varied mission to the next, as the graphic novel seems to jump from one story to the next, leaving a lot of loose ends untied by the end of the novel. Still, there were some good battle sequences in it, such as the one where Superman and WonderWoman are transported to Valhalla to fight off a demon invasion force. But one thing that irked me about that was, as usual, Superman didn't kill a single demon, he left that to WonderWoman while he just beat the demons up. I also enjoyed the Eradicator crisis. Over all, this was a pretty good Superman graphic novel, but it wasn't one of the best, though.
An entertaining, if somewhat scattershot, overview.......2001-02-19
Superman: No Limits is a collection of Superman's adventures from the several comic books featuring the character. The result is a wide-ranging book encompassing many artistic styles and conceptions of the Superman character. This diversity is book's greatest strength; it is, however, its greatest flaw as well.
On the one hand, there's a Superman for every taste to be found here. Whether you prefer him as a cartoonishly huge figure who towers over "mortal men" or a more "realistic" Man of Steel, wild super-powered action or quiet character-driven moments (Lois Lane's reaction to the agelessly beautiful Wonder Woman is priceless), it's in No Limits. It's all but impossible for the book to entirely disappoint.
On the other hand, the counterpoint to this is that the book cannot fully appeal. Whatever Superman or story type you like, a fair portion of the book will not be in accord with your tastes. Moreover, since No Limits collects issues of comic books which do not always relate to each other, plot lines diverge within the book, and many threads are left dangling. Perhaps most frustrating is the final story, which ends in a cliffhanger clearly intended to encourage the reader to purchase the next paperback collection.
Superman: No Limits offers a great many entertaining stories, written by several different authors and interpreted by a variety of artists. Since it makes no attempt to tie the many plots present together, and indeed leaves several unresolved, the book is perhaps best suited to those looking for a taste of an old favorite or a casual introduction to the World's Greatest Super-Hero. Involved fans looking for a more complete Superman experience would probably be better served by picking up the latest issues at a local comic shop.

Growing Appreciation.......2007-09-27
OK, at first, I wasn't particularly thrilled with this book. Maybe it's because I've been cooking for a crowd for awhile and hoped it would have more to offer. It's very basic. However, I am coming to appreciate its "basic-ness" and believe it's a good place to start if someone takes on a large crowd cooking challenge. Just having the information for how to estimate amounts of a particular food item is very nice; makes the math (at least for me!) much easier. I think the recipes are somewhat mundane, but again, since I've already come up with recipes that have worked successfully, maybe I'm not being fair. I think I came to respect the book and myself when I checked a recipe I've used against a similar one in the book and discovered they were close enough to make me feel as though I were anything but a dummy!
Loved it.......2007-01-10
A great help for a recent party I threw. I loved the tips and the recipe I tried was enjoyed by all.
Great and Easy.......2005-08-03
Good recipes, easy for anyone to follow. I manage a senior citizen facility and they are enjoying the change to our menu!

Prevention is WAY better than damage control.......2007-05-02
... and knowledge is necessary for prevention. This book is an absolute necessity for anyone who owns a horse, even if your horse doesn't go out on pasture. Did you know that clover is toxic to horses?? As are many other common pasture plants. I also found out that the main ingredient of a supplement for sale at the feed store is toxic to horses. This book should be required for horse ownership. Since it's not, I gave this to all of my horse friends for Christmas.
Can be overwhelming.......2007-01-05
A good resource, though I found the information overwhelming. Also in some cases not complete. I think this book in conjnction with the county extension office and your vet is the best.
not impressed.......2006-01-11
I purchased this book after having attended a horse clinic where toxic plants were mentioned in passing and it seemed my property might contain a few species of which to be wary. I chose this book as I had read that it had nice photos, which is important to me as I have no real knowledge of plants. However, after receiving this book and immediately looking up Red Maple, one of the trees I thought I needed to learn about, I realized this book was a mistake. It has a desrciption that does not compare it to any other maples. I know I have a few maples, but which one is it. This one mentions some characteristics, but I do not know if it is the only maple to have those characteristics.
I quote, "What to do- Call your veternarian. Fluids, oxygen, and blood transfusions may be helpful if administered early. Do not plant red maple trees in horse pastures. Always provide a nutricious diet and remove fallen maple branches and leaves from horse pens."
Gee... ya think I really shouldn't plant red maples in the horse pasture? But, golly, they're so pretty! The rest of the book is about as useful; with terminology such as "a lot" or "a good quantity", meaningless without some value expressed. If you already have a great deal of knowledge about toxic plants and this is just a refresher or reference, then it might have some value, thus the single star rating. However, if I could not get my money back from Amazon on this purchase, I would be using it as a doorstop.
Horse Owners Field Guide to Toxic Plants.......2005-07-29
This guide is clearly written. Best of all it has photos for every plant listed. It would be helpful to have photos showing a plant before flowering as that is when they first come into range. There are few books and sites that really cover the topic of toxicity at once. The problem with all of them is that they cause great alarm. Seems like the whole world is toxic. In fact, horses don't like the smell of most toxic plants. Still, I have identified a few that would cause me to jump right off my horse and pull it from his mouth if he snagged a bite. He's made a game of snitching when he can - a dangerous habit I'm trying to break. This guide does rate the toxicity levels and indicates how much it takes to reach levels of concern.
All in all, it's very good idea to know your toxic plants. Domestic horses aren't always inherently educated. I wouln't leave them free access to the grain room. I feel the same about the wilds. It's my job. The guide is very helpful.
Valuable but alarmist.......2004-05-19
This book is very valuable as a reference to a horse owner. The pictures are good, and each entry contains a description of possible symptoms and treatments (which I assume are correct). As a diagnostic, this book seems very useful and something you should have around.
However, as a new pasture owner, I found it incredibly alarmist. So much so that I almost :-) wanted to take my horses back to the boarding stable so I could stop worrying my pretty head about plants. Ha!
Practically every plant that has ever been known to harm a horse is listed, which means that the book is overwhelming. Some of the toxicities are mild and very uncommon, but the text is thick enough that it is difficult to determine whether the plant is likely to be dangerous without close reading. Clover is listed next to locoweed. In some cases, the plant listed is not itself toxic, but it tends to attract toxic fungi, as in the case of fescue. However, when reading the entries, they all have scary-sounding symptoms. It is difficult to ascertain under even a close reading whether the plant in question is really dangerous. There's a difference in my mind between "a nibble will be a life-or-death situation" and "symptoms will disappear if you remove the plant from the diet," and that difference is not readily apparent in the listings.
This book would be much improved if plants that were especially dangerous - plants that are acutely toxic in minute quantities and plants that are especially likely to be eaten in toxic quantities - were more obviously called out. I would love to have a quick icon at the top that tells me "Deadly - remove from pasture using any means necessary" or "Potential Problem" or "Not Likely to cause serious problems." This triage would allow me as an owner to concentrate my first efforts on learning to identify and eradicate the most dangerous plants, rather than being distracted by fescue and clover.
I'm glad that plants that can but usually don't cause problems, like fescue and clover, are listed. It's very useful when trying to diagnose a horse that's not quite right, and if they were omitted, the horse owner might incorrectly assume that the diet was not the issue. I would just like to see them flagged differently or perhaps included in an appendix rather than mixed in with the truly deadly plants that have no margin for error.
As it stands it is better as a reference for answering specific questions than as a book you can just read through when contemplating several acres of plants or potential plants.
Book Description
This is the third volume in the series of three 9"x11" black and white 1950's Disney picture books. Volume 1 " A Photographers Life With Disney Under Construction" & volume 2 "Disney Early Years Through the Eye of a Photographer" are also available. The all three volumes are a great historical documentation of this American icon.

Diesel engines are finally getting respect they deserve. Diesel trucks have always been popular for towing, but their orbit-altering low-end torque makes them great for off-roading, drag racing, and other types of horsing around. And with all the performance parts available for these trucks, it's not uncommon to see reliable, daily driven rigs making huge power. Diesel cars are also renowned for their efficiency and reliability-but they're responsive to performance upgrades too! Diesel engines work very differently than the gas engines most horsepower junkies are used to, so different performance principles apply. In High-Performance Diesel Builder's Guide, author Joe Pettitt shows you how diesel engines work and how to set them up to make big horsepower and torque, reliably. Pettitt uses over 325 color images and technical yet readable language to describe how to upgrade your intake, exhaust, turbo, and fuel systems to build more boost and make more power. There's even a chapter on nitrous oxide and propane injection. As for the rest of the vehicle, upgrades for your transmission and rear end are covered, too. With vehicle-specific chapters on GM, Ford, Dodge, and even Volkswagen vehicles, you can rest assured this book has the information you need.

Book Description
The bank building has become a pivotal part of our cities and our suburbs. Both public and private; secure and yet welcoming, bank architecture needs to embody our desire to see that our money is secure; yet welcome us and make us feel a part of the arcane and often impenetrable financial process. A paradoxical mix of alienation and embrace, it is a challenge which has faced architects since the Renaissance.
In this book Edwin Heathcote examines the roots of the architecture of banking - from the money changers' stalls to the palaces and banking houses of the Florentine dynasties; through the developments of modern banks and exchanges to the incredible changes and radical departures which recent banking buildings embody. Using some the best recent examples of the architecture of banking and exchange, the author attempts to se patterns in the recurrence of certain banking archetypes which persist even today and to examine some of the buildings which set new precedents and innovative patterns for change and adaptation.
Bank Builders covers the work of a great range of international architects including Foster Associates, KPF, Cesar Pelli, Gunther Behnisch, Erick van Egeraat, Mario Botta and Frank O Gehry. In putting the work of these architects into the context of the work of their forebears, from John Soane to Otto Wagner, the author hopes to show that banks and financial institutions - despite their often conservative image - have been at the heart of the most interesting and radical architectural commissioning over the last century.
EDWIN HEATHCOTE is an architect and writer working in London. He has written a number of books on architecture including Monument Builders, Church Builders and Imre Makovecz: The Wings of the Soul for Wiley-Academy. He also writes on architecture for the Financial Times and a number of architectural journals.

Slam Poetry is ALIVE on the page.......2007-07-26
Capturing Slam Poetry on the page is a difficult job. It is almost impossible. But "I am NOT a poet" is alive and jumps off the page. Its copius supply of amusing illustrations make page flipping to find a poem a pleasure. And I have had the pleasure of seeing Zork perform at two of his Barmes & Noble tour stops in Memphis and this book is just as alive as his live performance. If I could add a 6th star I would. I must mention though that this book earns a DEFINITE R rating..... it doesn't shy away from some heavy breathing R rated poetry. Zork has held workshops at our son's school and from the bookstore and school appearances we were not aware that the book might be quite so mature. He certainly sheilded all that material from school and bookstore audiences, but the book did raise my wife's pulse a few beats per minute for sure.

Book Description
Home schooling has long been regarded as a last resort, particularly by African-American families. But in this inspirational and practical memoir, Paula Penn-Nabrit shares her intimate experiences of home-schooling her three sons, Charles, Damon, and Evan. Paula and her husband, C. Madison, decided to home-school their children after racial incidents at public and private schools led them to the conclusion that the traditional educational system would be damaging to their sons’ self-esteem. This decision was especially poignant for the Nabrit family because C. Madison’s uncle was the famed civil rights attorney James Nabrit, who, with Thurgood Marshall, had argued Brown v. Board of Education before the U.S. Supreme Court; to other members of their family, it seemed as if Paula and C. Madison were turning their backs on a rich educational legacy.
But ultimately, Paula and C. Madison felt that they knew what was best for their sons. So in 1991—when Evan was nine and twins Charles and Damon were eleven—the children were withdrawn from the exclusive country day school they’d been attending.
In
Morning by Morning, Paula Penn-Nabrit discusses her family’s emotional transition to home schooling and shares the nuts and bolts of the boys’ educational experience. She explains how she and her husband developed a curriculum, provided adequate exposure to the arts as well as quiet time for reflection and meditation, initiated quality opportunities for volunteerism, and sought out athletic activities for their sons. At the end of each chapter, she offers advice on how readers can incorporate some of the steps her family took—even if they aren’t able to home-school; plus, there’s a website resource guide at the end of the book.
Charles and Damon were eventually admitted to Princeton, and Evan attended Amherst College. But
Morning by Morning is frank about the challenges the boys faced in their transition from home schooling to the college experience, and Penn-Nabrit reflects on some things she might have done differently.
With great warmth and perception, Paula Penn-Nabrit discusses her personal experience and the amazing outcome of her home-schooling experience: three spiritually and intellectually well balanced sons who attended some of the top educational institutions in this country.
What we learned from home schooling:
-Use your time wisely.
-Education is more than academics.
-The idea of parent as teacher doesn’t have to end at kindergarten.
-The family is our introduction to community.
-Extended family is a safety net.
-Yes, kids really do better in environments designed for them.
-Travel is an education.
-Athletics is more than competitive sports.
-Get used to diversity.
-It’s okay if your kids get angry at you—they’ll get over it!

Better viewed as structured testimonial than a how to book.......2007-04-12
Paula Penn-Nabrit chose homeschooling for her three black boys when they were pushed out of an elite midwestern private school. She and her husband, C. Madison, managed to put together an effective homeschooling program that supported their Christian, upper-middle class black values and helped her children reach elite education. For educators seeking radical solutions to addressing the challenges facing black students, this book offers a powerful testimony of one family's strategies in finding an alternative path.
For those readers looking for nuts and bolts information, I'd advise you to look elsewhere. Much of this book is spent clarifying the values and motivations for their choices. Little space is devoted to explaining curriculum choices. I can see how other reviewers were frustrated by the relative lack of specific details. I wish that the title didn't include "how" and focused on "why" or had some kind of cue to alert prospective buyers to how radical this book is.
Sadly, one audience who would really benefit from this book will probably never find it. This family is related to one of the lawyers who argued the Brown vs. Board of Education case. They have ties to elite networks in black America and both parents are Ivy League educated as well, which may have eased the process in gaining acceptance to Princeton and Amherst for the boys. Nabrit's painstaking defense of her decisions and her reflections on the attitudes she faced can be very helpful for those seeking to understand black elites and the tensions between trying to gain access to the upper echelons of American society such as private schools and Ivy League schools while trying to maintain an identity that is very distinctively black.
Some readers may be turned off by the frequent quoting of scripture to defend the values. Others may find this story to be too particular a case to apply to their own homeschooling situations. Personally, I was very intrigued by the chance to peer into the home of a black family that defied many traditional categories and found a very creative response to the challenges of education.
I'm not about to homeschool my future family after reading this book. But I do plan to apply some of Nabrit's holistic values for educating black males to my own work. Already, I see myself wanting to use some of the values in this book for supplemental educational projects related to black male middle schoolers.
Very helpful for a narrow audience...
4.5 stars for me
2.5 stars for being somewhat mislabeled
3.5 stars overall.
Couldn't muck through the racism to find the info.......2007-03-03
The Nabrits did an exceptional job of homeschooling their 3 sons, but I never finished the book. The rhetoric of racism and the Nabrit's "Ivy league status" was like a recurring theme on every page that took away from the purpose of the book. Was this a biography or a homeschooling book??? I came away with 2 things....all white people are bad, and she is (self-described) smart. I felt like it was her outlet to tell her story of mistreatment, and not a practical homeschooling book. I have moved on to practical, helpful, not negative, homeschooling resources.
More about race than about homeschooling.......2006-02-22
First, let me say I totally commend the Nabrits for their inspiring accomplishment with their sons and also for their desire to share their experience with the African American community and the homeschool community. But the book wasn't the 'homeschooling resource' that I expected it to be. Ms. Penn-Nabrit's experience of racism were shocking and disappointing to this white woman who 'thought' America had moved further beyond racism than, apparently, we have. I found the book enlightening on that score, but after a while (& could this be my own defense-mechanism?) I started to feel like some of the racism she finds might be a part of self-fulfilling prophecy. If you look hard enough, you will always find it. I am not doubting her first-hand experiences, but perhaps don't fully agree with some of her choices as to what to focus on.
Penn-Nabrit does offer useful suggestions such as using graduate students as tutors, and finding other strong mentors for your children. I also like how she used 'reverse-engineering' basically, to use college admission requirements to help design a course of study. I just wanted to hear more of THAT sort of info. I wasn't crazy about the organization of the book, and felt I had to sort through lots of personal data: which son had which birth weight or liked which sports, as well as the racism experiences in order to get to the bits that were fresh and applicable.
I totally support homeschooling, and would love to see more of it. I agree that African American homes have been under-reached on this topic. This book may well motivate someone TO homeschool, but you'll then want to move to other resources as to the HOW TO homeschool.
Exceptionally Well-Written, Engaging!.......2004-02-03
I am grateful to Paula Penn-Nabrit for having written this illuminating book. It is beyond my criticism. Perhaps the greatest treasure it offers is its revelation of how racism is still being played out by well-meaning white people. (You would have to read it to "get" it, especially if you are a standard white person like I am.) I also love that the Nabrits devised their own curriculum: so creative and applaudable! In fact, Paula is so personable you will appreciate her as a woman, despite the flaws that she confesses. You will also know she is no less a genius for not graduating all 3 sons from Ivy League Schools. I think those sons must be fantastic people and the Nabrits have done us all a favor by sending out into the world children of such extraordinary character. I would hope everyone reads this book, whether they choose to homeschool or not- it presents such a superlative example of what you can do for your children. Thank you, Paula.
A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE.......2003-05-21
Home Schooling is a controversial subject within the African-American community particularly those of the so-called upper middle-classes. America's public school system has proved itself a failure to adequately educate African-American children and private schools are no better. What is one to do? Paula Penn-Nabrit provides an answer, home schooling.
Yes, home schooling is a viable alternative. She should know because she and her spouse created such an environment for their sons. The results? All three young men were accepted into Ivy League schools. In viewing the results home schooling should not be ignored as an option for your child's education.
Morning By Morning takes us on a faith journey of parents who decided to take charge of the education of their sons. Ms and Mr Nabrit describe how they reached the decision, the steps they took to develop a curriculum for their sons, the criticism that they received from family members and the change in themselves and their boys as they went through the program.
Ms Nabrit shares with her readers practical information about home schooling and presents a well thought out philosophical foundation of the need to give her children a wholistic education not found in schools. She doesn't preach that her method is the only way or that home schooling is for everybody. She lays out the facts, resources and lessons learned from her experience and lets the reader make the decision.
I found this to be an excellent book by an African-American who has clearly shared with her readers the challenge of home schooling her children. She doesn't leave any aspect of the experience untouched and lets the parents know what they're getting themselves into emotionally, economically and spiritually. I certainly enjoyed Ms Nabrit's incorporation of the spiritual aspect of her children's lives in the education process. She and her husband are truly committed to a wholistic
education for their children and succeeded. This book is an example of how African-American parents can achieve the same thing for their children.
As much as I liked the book there were some philosophical problems I had with it. The Nabrits are "Ivy" League graduates as well as products of private white schools. They sent their children to private white schools and upper middle class public schools. Their commitment to home schooling came about when their sons were expelled from their elite private white school because their parents failed to pay the tuition in a timely matter. Although the Nabrits admit that this was the reason for them going to home schooling, I'm wondering if they still had the need to prove that their children could get into "Ivy" League schools because such institutions are white.
Certainly the class bias predominates throughout the work. Ms Nabrit makes sure that we learn about the pedigrees of both her family and that of her husbands who were fortunate enough to have a tradition of college educated family members. This book is certainly geared towards the African-American Upper Middle-Class.
Home Schooling is considered a risky alternative form of education. The Nabrits have proved that it can be successful and that your children can compete with anyone. If you as a parent have the time, tenacity, commitment and ability to take on the challenge by all means seek home schooling for your child. There isn't any doubt that they will do better than their institutionalized colleagues. The Nabrit's experiment proved it.
