Amelia Peabody.......2007-09-13
Excellent book. One of my favorite Peabody mysteries. This was bought as a gift - I have all the Peabody mysteries. Thanks!
The Sixth Book in a Terrific Series.......2007-06-20
Elizabeth Peters was born and brought up in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago's famed Oriental Institute. Peters was named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998. She lives in a historic farmhouse in western Maryland.
The Amelia Peabody books may or may not be an acquired taste, personally I love them. They are set in Victorian times when there were still very strict rules of etiquette and polite behaviour was the norm. Although most of the books are set in Egypt, in the desert under very trying conditions and extremely hot weather the `English' way of life was still expected to be adhered to, sometimes with quite hilarious consequences.
Amelia Peabody is Elizabeth Peters' best loved and brilliant creation, a thoroughly Victorian feminist who takes the stuffy world of archaeology by storm with her no nonsense dress sense and forthright opinions.
Egyptologist Amelia Peabody along with her husband Emerson, perhaps the most famous archaeologist of his day and their son Ramses are in the Sudan searching for Viscount Blacktower's son and his new bride. As trouble follows them everywhere it is not long before they are caught up in a web of deceit and treachery. Once again their survival depends upon Peabody's powers of deduction, Ramses ability to look like one of the natives and Emerson's ability to frighten anybody and everybody who gets in his way.
the best of the best.......2006-02-12
I am a huge fan of Elizabeth Peters - have read and own all in the series - to me, this book is the turning point in the series - going to search for a lost land and finding it, and introduces Nefret to our cast. Who turns out to be a major character in the series. My favorite part of this book is when Emerson is imprisoned and in chains and he busts out of them! Of course, Ramses, who was a great character as a child and subsequently as an adult, is around and Peabody is everyone's sweetheart -
Adventure, romance, Egyptology, this book has it all -
A great starting point for the rest of the series, or an incentive to read from the start.
GOOD GAD, THE BEST SO FAR!.......2006-02-11
Thanks to AMAZON'S recommended books and reviews, I discovered this delightful series. Elizabeth Peters does a wonderful job combining mystery, history and archeology into a fast paced story that entertains the reader. Then of course we can't forget the romance (implied, naturally).
In my opinion, THE LAST CAMEL DIED AT NOON is the best of the first six books in the series (the first one did get me hooked). The concept of finding a lost city hidden in the middle of the desert was brilliant. We are also introduced to Nefret who not only becomes the Emerson's adopted daughter but an integral part of the rest of the Peabody series.
And, I am absolutely thrilled to discover a series of books where there are at least 20 already written. I don't have to wait for the next one; I can just go straight through!!
Another Great Amelia Peabody Novel.......2005-09-24
Barbara Michaels hit the jackpot when she invented Amelia Peabody Emerson, and this novel just increases the appeal of the entire family. For those of us who love Egyptian history, adventure novels, and romance, this series can't be beat. Thanks, Ms. Michaels!

Product Description
The undauntable Amelia Peabody, her irrepressible husband Emerson, and their forbiddingly precocious son Ramses, were pleasantly discussing their next Eqyptian expedition when a rather bulky, white-faced young man burst into the drawing room and promptly collapsed at Amelia's feet. The gentleman-who later would prove rather prone to collapsing-was one Reginald Forthright, and he came bearing a particularly chilling story. It seems that 14 years before. Forthright's uncle-the famous explorer Willoughby Forth - had disappeared into the Nubian desert along with his beautiful child bride, never to return. Now a mysterious letter from an unknown source has convinced Forthright's disconsolate grandfather that his son and daughter-in-law are still alive. In spite of Forthright's protests to the contrary, the senior Willoughby is intent upon persuading the two archaeologists to find them. How Amelia's eccentric little family are transported from the relative calm of Victorian England to a lost kingdom burled deep in the heart of the Sudan, is a sometimes perilous, sometimes hilarious, always entertaining adventure. "If Indiana Jones were female, a wife and mother sho lived in Victorian times, he would be Amelia Peabody Emerson, an archaeologist whose extraordinary adventures are guaranteed entertainment." Publishers Weekly

A Pleasure.......2006-08-03
Barbara Rosenblatt really captures the spirit of the Amelia Peabody novels. She understands that these books do not take themselves too seriously. Amelia Peabody is irrepressible and the slow pace of the story is enjoyable because the characters are so likeable. A true pleasure.
Indiana Jones she is not.......2006-01-13
The plot seems to be slow moving, the characters are very flat, and for whatever reason, the narrator is hard to listen to.
I checked this book out of the library on a whim, the cover talking about the female version of Indiana Jones. I wasted my time slugging through four cassettes before I gave up and returned it.
The plot centers around a secret map that may lead to untold riches. Along the way Peabody, with her husband and son have uninspired encounters with the local natives in egypt. The native they are traveling with is really a prince of a lost ancient civilization, the crooked porters run off with their camels and supplies. I don't know if it was just incredibly bad forecasting or just that it was so darn predictable, but I found myself wanting to fast forward just to get to the good part. Four tapes later I gave up on finding any.
You might like this if you enjoy turn of the century literature, slow moving plots, and unoriginal storylines. As for me, I pass.

magical.......2003-01-07
a beautiful, highly original blend of love and magic.
Enchantment.......2001-05-09
Orson Scott Card has kept his outstanding reputation as one of the greatest science fiction authors of all time. This book combines information of the jewish lifestyle, and russian folklore, two things that i basically knew nothing about when i read this book. Card did some excellent research for this book, bringing back long forgotten people and places into modern day life. it's a story of adventure, love, and magic. i bought this book, not liking love stories, thinking that i might just read some of it and then store it on my shelf for a later time. But after the first few pages i was hooked; i couldn't put it down. This is a wonderful book, i would recomend this book to science fiction lovers and the dedicated Card readers. If you're looking for a new author, Orson Scott Card is truly wonderful.
Don't waste your money on the abridged audio version!.......1999-11-30
The audio version of this book is well read but suffers from being rather poorly abridged. Abrubt segues will leave you wondering if you've lost mind. Perhaps the extracted portions of the text were not critical, but the remaining should have been changed so as not to refer to things and events the listener is not privy too.
How did they manage to mangle such a good story?.......1999-09-17
Who chose the reader of this book? And who did the abridgment? I'm still listening to the tape, but in spite of the terrible reading and only because the story -- in spite of the unexplained cuts and breaks -- itself is so good. If the tape hadn't been given to me as a gift, I would be really peeved right now at having spent money for it. I'm going to buy the book, though, because I want to get the whole story. When I read the book, I'm sure I'll be able to give it a much better review than this review of the tape.
Abridgement is awful and undermines the story........1999-07-17
I loved this book because it made a familiar story new and exciting. However, the abridgement on the audio version destroyed continuity and trivialized much of it. Two examples: (1) Ivan is circling the chasm avoiding the bear. The details of him getting across the chasm are edited out, so we're left wondering how. (2) Ivan finds a message in Kiev which later proves instrumental in a climactic scene -- all mention of the note is left out until suddenly, it appears when needed with no explantion. It's as if the editor simply excised parts regardless of content and made no effort to patch the holes in the plot. This is an example of a 5-star book turning into a 2-star audio book.

Ecstatic!!!!!.......2007-10-06
Others have written about this book far more eloquently than I would be able to. I am just writing this to express my love for this tale and it's characters.
I have adored this story since I first saw the Storybreak version one Saturday ages ago. I immediately got the book and proceeded to read it over and over again into shreds. I was heartbroken when I discovered I was unable to replace my shredded book... For some unknown reason everything Clare Bell was out-of-print AND very hard to find (although I would come across a short story from her here and there). I have carefully kept my falling apart pages in one place so I could continue to reread this book.
I am ecstatic that I can now get a new, untattered version of this book AND the sequels. Yay!
priceless.......2007-09-16
I read this book originally when I was in grade school. Now, I'm 32 and have never forgotten it. It was a great surprise to find that it had been reprinted and I look forward to going back and reading it again. Most of the details are fuzzy but Ratha's courage stuck with me through high school and past. It was a fantastic read and I would recommend it to anyone.
The First of an Absorbing, Enlightening Series.......2007-09-03
I didn't discover Clare Bell's books until I was 50 years old. Ratha's Creature and the rest of the series are such fantastic, absorbing books that they seamlessly cross over generations. Not a book for young adults only! Reading Ratha's Creature will kick off a new world for the reader in which you laugh, cry and breath with the characters. I love these books and highly recommend them.
Tested By Fire . . ........2007-08-23
There are plenty of cat stories out there in the publishing universe. I can honestly say I've never read any cat story that's quite like the work of Clare Bell. Don't look for cuddly bright eyed kittens here! Part Clan of the Cave Bear, part Jungle Book, Clare's prehistoric feline fantasy takes us into the world of a clan of sentient cats called the Named and one spirited yearling named Ratha. Back in print after many years, these works are back on the shelf and in the hands of eager readers again.
This first book is Ratha's story, her journey in discovering her own strength as she changes roles from herder, to rebel, exile and heroine. When a spirited Ratha discovers ways to handle the fire that so terrifies her people, she doesn't realize that her actions will lead to exile, and a loss of all she's ever known. As Ratha is forced to grow up and struggle through hardship to find her way, she must learn what road to travel, despite the price she pays to walk it. When the Clan who exiled her is threatened with being destroyed, she must decide if she will be the key to their survival against the attacks of the Unnamed.
Reading this again after so many years I was pleasantly surprised to find this book has lost none of its impact and strength. Ms. Bell has created a harsh prehistoric world that her cat clan lives in. This is not a land of magic or easy choices. Each choice leads to inevitable consequences, even when it may be the right choice to make. The author's deft handling of her characters allows for readers to suspend their disbelief and really visualize this band of sentient cats that herd animals for food. The cats still have to contend with the lack of hands and the demands of their nature, but the personalities and societal pressures are very familiar and all too human.
While the tale moves quickly and is relatively short, this is not a light story--there are extremely poignant moments, and triumph is often mixed with tragedy. The author manages to pull the reader into the world without lengthy scene setting or world building detours. The book moves fast--but the tale never stumbles over itself in the telling. It's a powerful story. It's the story of what makes a leader and what kinds of roads they often travel. It's the story of love and loss and betrayal. It's a story of big cats in an unforgiving wilderness and how they survive.
This is not a cute or cuddly story. It's a serious adventure and coming of age tale that will likely appeal to young teen and young adult readers. Given some of the mature elements in the story, this may not be as appropriate for younger readers: the complex characters and mature relationships make for demanding reading! If you want to read more about Ratha and her clan, take heart! There's more to the The Named series. "Clan Ground", "Ratha and Thistle Chaser", and "Ratha's Challenge" are all back in print and the brand new "Ratha's Courage" is due out soon! If you like cat stories like these, you might want to check out "Tailchaser's Song" by Tad Williams and the "Catfantastic" story anthologies edited by Andre Norton.
Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad
Original Power and Beauty.......2007-08-20
This is probably one of the most original story lines ever created. Even now, some 20 years after its first publication, there really isn't anything like "Ratha's Creature", Clan Ground (The Named), Ratha and Thistle-Chaser: The Third Book of the Named or Ratha's Challenge: The Fourth Book of the Named.
When I read this book as a 'pre-teen', I was absolutely swept into Ratha's world. I was already a fan of sci-fi and fantasy, and like many girls my age, anthropomorphic animals. A clan of talking cats that harnassed the power of fire was right up my alley. While Ratha's story could have taken place here on earth, it was also alien and new. As a role model a prehistoric animal seems a little far-fetched, but Ratha was courageous and willing to explore new ideas, even if they were outside the grain of her society. She discovered the inner strength necessary to stand up for her newly discovered 'creature' and for her own inner fire.
A few years later, after reading Jean Auel's "Valley of Horses", I saw a lot in common between Ratha and Auel's leading lady, Ayla. While the characters and themes (discoveries, exile, loss and self-awareness) are similar, the adventures of the Named are more age-appropriate for younger audiences, even with the sexual and violent imagery prevalent in the series.

Mouthwatering fun.......2006-08-04
Finally a great cookbook with beautiful, vivid pictures of a finished product. i love many cookbooks but the one thing I am usually diappointed with is no photos. I want to see the end so I have an idea where I am going while cooking. This books provides great ideas and gives you fabulous pictures. This is a wonderful addition to anyone who loves comfort or southern food. My favorite section is the Autumn/harvest section simply perfect pumpkin recipes to die for.
review of Get Togethers with Gooseberry Patch.......2006-06-26
I love this cookbook.I have purchased many Gooseberry Patch cookbooks through the years. I like the pictures in this one, although sometimes due to their placement, it is a little difficult to find the recipe that matches the picture. I like this cookbook because it contains so very many of my favorites and those I like to serve to family and friends. I am not a gourmet cook, just like to prepare delicious, low-fat meals. This cookbook has so many favorites together in ONE cookbook. I don't have to take a lot of time rounding up recipes. It makes preparing my grocery list easier.
Beautiful pictures & wonderful recipes.......2005-10-05
I am very rarely surprised by a cookbook, but I was this time. I am ordering it as a Christmas gift for all my family members that cook. The recipes are just one step up from easy and the pictures make your mouth water. This is the kind of cookbook that I will not put on the shelf.
Beautiful photography and delicious-sounding recipes!.......2005-08-17
This cookbook is a nice departure from Gooseberry's usual style. The photographs are beautiful and showcase the recipes well. The recipes are organized by season and you can almost feel the weather change as you read through the book. There are many recipes I can't wait to try. A nice addition to my cookbook collection - one that will be used and not just look good on my shelf.

If your dog is displaying signs of aggressiveness, he's not the only one. Grrr!: The Complete Guide to Understanding and Preventing Aggressive Behavior in Dogs author and dog trainer Matthew Margolis says that more than 80 percent of his clients seek him out because of concern about their dog's aggressive behavior. The signs of an aggressive dog are obvious: one who growls, bites, jumps, barks, or nips without being provoked. Yet, as Siegal and coauthor Matthew Margolis explain, it's much more difficult to get dog owners to admit that there's a problem and that the owners may be contributing, even unintentionally, to the aggressive behavior.
Margolis identifies the major characteristics of an aggressive dog and the 10 different sources of canine aggression, including fear aggression, dominant aggression, and territorial aggression. Because each type of aggression stems from a different source, each requires a special treatment. The next step, then, is identifying your dog's aggression type, which dog owners can do using the book's definitions and tests. Once you understand where your dog's behavior comes from, Siegal and Margolis theorize, you can then begin to properly train, socialize, and desensitize him, processes that are covered in subsequent chapters. By retraining your dog, you can once again assert the proper ways for your dog to behave.
Along with helping aggressive-dog owners gain control over their animals, the book also advises prospective dog owners on what to look for when picking out a nonaggressive dog. Siegal and Margolis explain that aggressiveness sometimes stems from genetic behavior and can be identified as early in a pup's life as six or seven weeks. They outline several tests you can perform on a dog to pinpoint whether the animal has an aggressive tendency.
Siegal and Margolis's love of dogs and respect for caring owners is evident in the tone of the book. Grrr!'s sensitive and informative approach to dog aggressiveness should help owners retrain their animals and hopefully prevent some unfortunate situations.--Kris Law

Customer Reviews:
I found this book to be disappointing and not particularly insightful........2006-03-15
As an amateur trying to learn more about canine agression, I was actually quite disappointed with the content of this book. Overall, there is no significantly new or insightful information in this book, and frankly, much of the information about specific types and symptoms of agression problems in dogs can be had for free, often in better detail and more scientifically presented, on the internet, particularly if one searches for information generated by professionals in the field of canine agression, such as scientific papers presented to veterinary journals.
I DID, however, find the chapter on agression testing to be helpful -- I haven't seen this type of testing recommended elsewhere, and I did find it interesting and helpful to see the results of these tests on my young puppy. That being said, I am working on canine agression issues from more of a preventative than a curative or treatment basis, and I would have to give SERIOUS second thoughts about trying some of the suggested tests on a large, mature, and seriously agressive dog. To be fair, the authors also suggest a great deal of caution when performing these tests on older dogs.
The vast majority of the book is merely a recycled basic obedience course book -- sit, stay, heel, come, etc.. And, while I certainly would agree that a firm command of obedience is especially important to a dog with behavioral issues, I alread have several good books on the subject, such as those by the Monks of New Skete. Had I known that most of this book was just a rehashed obedience manual, I would have saved my money and skipped it. Based upon the title, I just expected a lot more out of this book than I got. For someone who really wants a good, in depth book about canine agression issues and their treatments, I'd say to spend your money on a copy of "Clinical Behavioral Medicine For Small Animals" by Dr. Karen L. Overall from the University of Pennsylvania. Although this is a very expensive book (it is a textbook for veterinary students and also a reference book for clinical veterinarians), it had the answers I was seeking and was definitely worth the money.
Not Enough Specifics.......2004-01-25
My 3 dogs recently start fighting and was frantic about what to do since they live inside with me 24/7. I had fights that landed one of my dogs in the ER room so this was a serious problem. I have obedience trained all my dogs so I am not a novice. I heard this author on the local radio station where I live and thought his book may be helpful. It was not. It is very basic stuff I already knew. I found Patricia McConnell, PH.D.'s 30 page pamphlett "The Cautious Canine"to be much more helpful than this author's 230 page book. If your problem is strickly aggression and or fearful shy dogs then this book does not address enough detail about what to do. I think it may be a good book for any new or inexperienced dog owner that covers basics. I have since restored peace in my house with some new ground rules and appointing the right dog to alpha status so it can be done.
CAT'S MEOW (OR GETTING RID OF THE PROBLEM, NOT THE POOCH).......2003-01-01
Your pooch bites the postman. Your dog nips at your hands when you pet her. Your canine companion chases cars and bicyclists and joggers. You call this man's best friend? This has got to be one of the best dog-training books we've ever sunk our teeth to, as author Matthew "Uncle Matty" Margolis, the renowned dog trainer and host of "Woof! It's a Dog's Life" (along with Mordecai Siegal), teach how not to allow Fido or Rover to sink their teeth into it as well. The advice is practical and easy-to-follow: The authors identify 10 distinct categories, describing each one and explaining why problems occur. There are also aggression and puppy personality tests that will help owners identify and correct specific behavior. Finally! You can get rid of the problem --- not the dog.
Makes a complicated issue easier to understand.......2001-02-14
When your best friend that you take everywhere and spend so much time with suddenly turns on you or exhibits aggressive behavior, it is devasting. How can my dog do this to me? It's like any other member of the family turning against you. This book helped me get over that feeling and look at the problem from my dog's point of view. I read the entire book and when I finished, I realized that aggressive behavior in dogs is a dog thing and I learned to understand the factors. I was able to determine that I needed some professional help. I have to say the book is the reason I got help and the reason we're back to normal. I think everyone who lives with a dog should read this book.
Save Your Money.......2000-08-11
I bought this book after experiencing a problem with one of my dogs. Because of the reputation of the authors, I assumed (wrongly) that this would be a helpful book. The book seems to be a real cut and paste effort from previous works. It is disjointed and offers the reader no real tools to work with. Worse than that, I foresee someone depending on this book rather than getting professional assistance with this potentially dangerous situation. I was disappointed that these two 'experts' in dog training had nothing better to offer. Save your money, I wish I had.
