Book Description
When solitary marine biologist Doc Ford focused his telescope on the woman in the white boat, he didn't know his life was about to be capsized: that his conniving uncle Tucker Gatrell would discover the Fountain of Youth, that The National Enquirer would write about it, and that the law would beat down his door in search of three missing men.But Doc Ford is about to find these things out-- the hard way. Because in the shadowy world of Southwest Florida, where gators yawn, cattle craze, and Indian bones are buried, mysteries great and small have found the man to solve them....

The Man Who Invented Florida.......2007-07-25
One of Randy Wayne Wright's best books! It is very different from his other books and that is part of what makes it so good. A must read!!
Good Florida read.......2007-04-11
Randy Wayne White is a successful writer. His novels take place in Florida and and his major character is Dr. Marion "Doc" Ford a marine biologist with a past (I will not reveil it for the benefit of the readers that have not read any of the novels yet).
If you have not read any of his books yet I would not suggest to start with this one as it is different from the rest of the series. In this one the supporting characters (his uncle and indian friend) dominate the novel and Doc supplements the plot. I would recommend to start with the first of the series Sanibel Flats.
Having said that, this story is very well written and does, in a way, pay tribute to old Florida. There is not much action but that is not, as the book proves, bad. It is enjoyable to read and has some humor.
All in all I would recommend this one but beware that it is different from the series. I would not elaborate as I do not want to ruin it for the future reader.
A human story, not a thriller.......2007-04-09
I stopped reading the Doc Ford novels after a while because, despite being top of the line Florida thrillers, the histrionic violence and action just got to be too much. Now I find myself wishing RWW would write more stories like The Man Who Invented Florida. This is the one that transcends the genre to become excellent mainstream literature.
If you're looking for an action flick in novel form, this is not it. If you're looking for a beautiful, affecting story, you found one.
Not just another Doc Ford adventure........2007-03-10
I've read nearly all of RW White's books now and most are a terrific roaring read, but nothing that you would call 'a great novel'. This one is. The characters are complex and well-drawn, the story profound and moving, and yet it's written with a very light touch. It reminded me of A Confederacy of Dunces, it was that good.
A big yawn in the sunshine state.......2007-01-14
This book starts slow and decelerates from there. Based on the reviews on the back cover I was expecting a captivating read, what a disappointment.
I found the storyline as engrossing as watching the weather channel. I wanted to give it a fair chance, so I read it all the way through. That's 5 hours of my life I'll never get back.
Product Description
THE HEAT ISLANDS: Mariine biologist and former secret operative Doc Ford is lazily poling his skiff along Southwest Florida's flat copper sea in search of sea anemones, when he runs into the body of the most hated man on Sanibel Island -- Marvin Rios. And when the Island's simplest and sweetest resident is arrested for the murder, Doc heads straight into the heart of the sunshine state's dark side -- to save his friend from being framed, and to save Sanibel Island from a rising tide of land-grab schemes, blood money and violence. THE MAN WHO INVENTED FLORIDA: When solitary marine biologist Doc Ford focused his telescope on the woman in the white boat, he didn't know his life was about to be capsized: that his conniving uncle Tucker Gatrell would discover the Fountain of Youth, that The National Enquirer would write about it, and that the law would beat down his door in search of three missing men. But Doc Ford is about to find these things out -- the hard way. Because in the shadowy world of Southwest Florida, where gators yawn, cattle graze, and Indian bones are buried, mysteries great and small have found the man to solve them . . .

From the supplier: Henry Morrison Flagler is considered Florida's earliest and most powerful developer, and one who was able to devise ways to boost the state's tourism industry. Inspired by his fondness for the Florida climate, Flagler worked for the laying of rails along the east coast in 1885, from south of the state to Key West. He also decided to build several hotels along the way, instituting what may well be today's booming tourist industry in Florida.

all good things come to an end [no spoilers].......2004-04-29
"Chorus Skating" is the eighth and final volume in the Spellsinger adventure about Jon-Tom and colleague Mudge.
Back cover of book:
We're talking 'bout - bad, BAD, BAD BAD VIBRATIONS!
Spellsinger Jon-Tom is not in search of the Lost Chord; he's found it; living notes adrift from some extradimensional chorus line, fugitive from an otherworldly unfinished symphony. And the errant air wants Jon-Tom to follow it - right off a clef, into deadly peril.
For a minor key adventure turns major as Jon-Tom, his otter pal Mudge, and the schizo scherzo rescue a gaggle of spoiled princesses, battle the compulsions of a bizarre bazaar, wage war on a guerrilla gorilla, are sucked into a mocking maelstrom - and are trapped by an evil alien band who plan the ultimate musical rip-off, plunging the universe into the sounds of silence. Now, unless Jon-Tom's magic can conquer the airwaves, the hills will be alive with the sounds of an evil wizard who writes the songs that make the whole world?
Scream!
End back cover of book.
Sadly when Jon-Tom has begun to truly master his magical music, the series ends. I thoroughly enjoyed the novels for their creativity and humor. As far as final volumes go, the book finishes strong and is better than I remember. The return of Jon-Tom and Mudge is a huge relief and doesn't fail to entertain. Unfortunately, the back cover gives away too many of the obstacles encountered during the story.
As a fan of the classical, rock, and heavy metal music genres, I find the magic Jon-Tom creates with his duar exciting since I believe a well-constructed song can affect people with its intensity and power in a primal aspect.
Thank you.
A delightful encore excursion into the Spellsinger world.......2004-02-26
I'm not exactly certain why this book is so reviled by even the most ardent fans of the Spellsinger series, because it really is, for all extents and purposes, an absolutely stunning adventure, wrought with concise care. It plunges our beloved heroes, Jon-Tom and Mudge, into a topsy-turvy adventure on par with any book in the original sextet. Wonderful, silly, and an all-around good read.
Chorus Skating.......2000-01-05
This book is the second book in the Son of Spellsinger series by Alan Dean Foster. It is the first book of his that I had ever read but it has made me a fan of his books for life. The book has distinct undertones of social commentary; but its most distinctive feature is its ability to make the reader laugh. For any Fantasy fans who are ready for just plain old fashioned fun, this book is a delightful read.

Customer Reviews:
so much fun.......2007-01-14
i have tried several. there is on occasion a question about a recipe, should something be covered, stirred but since i know nothing about the generalities i need to be let by the hand. i love that they are not the kinds of wine just anyone can buy at the corner store. great fun to talk about even with non wine makers.
Not what I was expecting.......2006-08-30
From the title, I was expecting this book to be along the same lines as "Wild Fermentation," by Sandor Ellix Katz. It wasn't.
There are about three paragraphs in this book that discuss wild fermentation (i.e. fermenting wine with nothing but the wild yeast in the atmosphere), and those paragraphs contained several inaccuracies (for example, wild yeast exists everywhere, not just on the skins of grapes, and these yeasts will ferment anything containing sugar, not just grape juice).
This book wasn't by any means bad, it just wasn't what I thought it would be.
Inspiring but some details are missing.......2004-12-15
I got this book for my first winemaking book, and used one of
the blackberry wine recipes for my first batch. The recipes
are just recipes, without the minute detail, and it was hard
to turn back and forth from the recipes to the 'how to' intro
to get the general detailed steps, and there were a couple of
steps that I wasn't sure exactly what to do. Also, there are
tips I could have used, for example the siphoning; the book
makes it sound simple but it was very frustrating, and there
are tools available to start the siphon that I hope will be
very useful.
The book is very inspiring and the recipes are diverse and
interesting, I expect to use it again.
Finally!.......2004-11-05
Many years ago when I started making my own wine, I had receipes for fruit wines including Pineapple, Strawberry and even a Strawberry/Vanilla wine. I lost that small book and went without for many years. If you have any interest in making fruit and herb wines (They Make Great Gifts!) then try this book. It will keep you busy for quite some time.
Outstanding recipe resource.......2004-05-14
Very Very little in this boon on the how-to of wine making but if you're an experienced wine maker and you're looking for a recipe book for mead and wine this is the one to get. Tons of stuff.
Book Description
White-tailed deer hunters working public lands know the competition to bag big bucks is tough. Fortunately, there is a powerful--and underutilized--tool available to all hunters that can dramatically increase success in the field: The U.S.G.S. topographical map. By learning to read "topo maps" and understanding how deer relate to their landscape, hunters can learn to consistently put themselves in a position to bag trophy whitetails.
Author Brad Herndon explains the basic concepts of using topographical maps effectively and implementing sound terrain hunting strategies in this new must-have guide. From inside corners and double inside corners to the perfect funnel and mastering the wind, readers will get a better concept of using the wind and understanding topographical maps.
Illustrations show details of how deer move, where the hunter should place his stand, and how to use the wind to ensure a successful whitetail hunt.
* Increase the odds of bagging a trophy whitetail with a topographical map * Features tactics for implementing sound terrain hunting strategies * Includes detailed illustrations

Clears up the muddy water.......2006-09-04
I've hunted since the 60's. I got serious about Whitetails around 92'.
I talk to a lot of hunters and read a lot of books and watch videos and spend as much time as possible in the woods. Mr. Herndon's book has started to make everything gel in my mind.
As I read and think about this book I keep going over successful hunts I've had. Now, I am able to determine why they were successful and focus on more success in the future by using the stratagies discussed in this book.
There is no replacement for time in the woods and experience. But this book will definitely introduce structure and logic, to where and how to hunt instead of just instinct.
What I love about deer hunting is there is always something new to learn. And, of course, the adrenaline rush. Deer and especially Trophy bucks just aren't always predictable, too many variables, but this book will help organize all of your whitetail wisdom.
Advanced Mapping.......2006-06-21
Finally! An excellent book I can't imagine any serious hunter not owning! Before reading this book, it took me years of mistakes and hours of wasted time in the wrong spots to hunt. It all makes sense when I compare my few encounters of success, with the great information provided in this well-written book. I can't wait to see an "Advanced Mapping" edition!!!! Please Brad, share more of this great advice!
The Master of Topography........2006-06-13
Brad Herndon is a master at using the terrain to tag whitetailed deer. Before reading this book, I knew whitetails used terrain funnels to travel, but I did not understand how to recognize them. All of that changed when I read 'Mapping Trophy Bucks.' I can now view a topo map of an area I've never set foot on and pick out the best places for a hunt. My deer sightings have gone up tenfold!!
If you want to understand how whitetails relate to the terrain, and how to read a topographical map, this is an absolute must read!!
Best deer hunting book I have read........2006-05-12
I have own and have read countless books on deer hunting. Most say exactly the same things. "Hunt scentfree", "Stay all day", "The rut is the best time to hunt". If you deer hunt at all this is not new information. THis book mentions this information but it treats it like common knowledge and focuses on terrain and deer behavior as it is affected by the terrain. It has the absolute best explainations of various wind conditions I have seen. In short, this book is the first to have a signifigant impact on my hunting. I can't wait to apply this information to stand location and scouting. I have hunted the same area for 10+ years and will enter the woods this year as a completely different hunter.
Excellent book!.......2006-03-24
Excellent book that changed the way for me to start hunting in the best way you could ever imagine!. Basics and advance tool to analyze and be prepared for your hunting time.

Book Description
The work of the English artist Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) lives on not only in museums and stately homes but in reproductions and reflections of all kinds--ceramics, cigarette cards, biscuit tins, fans, hats, films, and cartoons.
These incidental objects and ephemera are part of the history of Gainsborough's art and influence. Naturally, his most iconic works feature strongly--The Blue Boy or The Duchess of Devonshire (once the most expensive picture in the world, dramatically stolen and finally recovered by Pinkerton's detective agency). Told for the first time in this book, this is an important episode in the history of English and American taste.
This little book is a timely publication to accompany the international Gainsborough retrospective opening in Washington and Boston in 2003.
Hugh Belsey is curator at Gainsborough's House in the artist's home town of Sudbury, Suffolk. Christopher Wren is a collectables expert.
Customer Reviews:
I Really LIke This This Book.......2001-02-09
I had a wonderful time reading this book. It's more of a *long* essay than it is a book. The writing is excellent, and there are lots of wonderful photographs interspersed within. I don't know if it really matters, but for what it's worth I read part of this book while sitting at a table at Birdland on 46th Street in NYC waiting for my favorite up and coming piano player, David Epstein, to return from break to play another set. I have three books by Gary Giddins and like him so much I'm going to buy more of his books. By coinicidence I saw a video recently on the life of Charlie Parker, and it used many of the same photographs that were used in this book. I am not aware of a tie in between the two products however. In conclusion, this book was enjoyable and I learned a great deal about Charlie Parker from the point of view of his personality and his character and what his life was like.
