Key West has been a geographical muse for a gamut of writers from Wallace Stevens to Jimmy Buffett. Cast almost adrift, the last pearl on the string of islands that make up the end of America's East Coast, Key West endures in our imaginations as an expatriate paradise, a pirate hideaway, and a perpetual party. In his debut novel, The Mango Opera, Tom Corcoran does little to shatter these illusions. Indeed, he does quite a bit to fill out the uninitiated reader's understanding of the secretive and steamy history of Cayo Hueso.

Corcoran's hero, Alex Rutledge is a freelance photographer whose island life has taken a turn for the worse with the recent departure of his girlfriend, Annie Minnette. When he isn't shooting magazine glossies and menu food, Rutledge does a bit of forensic work for local law enforcement agencies. It's easy money until the morning he finds Annie's look-alike roommate posed for some gruesome portraits on the other side of his lens. Police begin to suspect a serial killer as the list of victims grows, and Rutledge suspects something more sinister when he realizes the list of victims reads like a page or two from his own little black book.

Like a tropical chef, Corcoran flavors The Mango Opera with colorful characters, crisp dialogue, island history, and quite a bit of dark but highly appropriate humor. He serves it all up in tasty bites that promise to satisfy almost any mystery lover.

Book Description

Although he prefers magazine work, freelance photographer Alex Rutledge won't turn down an occasional crime scene shoot for the City of Key West Police Department. But when a string of murders takes his viewfinder into strangely familiar territory, Alex's mellow island lifestyle shatters. One after another, someone is killing women who have intimately crossed Alex Rutledge's path. Maybe it's a coincidence. Maybe it's a conspiracy. Or maybe he's crazy. But the connection marks Alex as the prime suspect in a case so hot it's drawn in the county sheriff, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. In a desperate race to save his name and his life, Alex dives into a one-man search for the dark, sweltering truth beneath a case that's pounding toward meltdown.

I received my book in a very short time, in perfect condition, and have enjoyed it very much. I was unable to find this book locally, not even in the libraries, and am glad to have my own copy to keep.

3 out of 5 stars The Mango Opera Review.......2006-06-01

The Mango Opera is a book that can be very confusing at times. Tom Corcoran does an excellent job of keeping the audience guessing all the way up until the end of the book. The Mango Opera is a mystery involving a forensic photographer, Alex Rutledge, who comes to terms with all of his ex girlfriends deaths. Corcoran implements many characters into his plot to keep the reader constantly guessing. It is also the thing that is confusing about the book; there are so many characters to keep track of. Throughout the book, I had to go back and reread certain sections to understand what Corcoran was talking about. Corcoran's purpose in the book I think was to show the extreme side of something. The entire book was all about revenge and the destructive things that come along with it. Hatch, Fernandez and Kemp all wanted revenge on Anselmo and Rutledge was just a coincidence. I think Corcoran did an excellent job of showing what happens when people are desperate for revenge. People should learn to either let things go or confront them at the moment. Walking around with all that hate for to long, it can affect someone eternally. His writing style is very traditional to other writers. What was confusing about it, it was talking a lot about the Miami scene and Key West. If you live nowhere near that, it can be confusing at times. The universal truth in The Mango Opera is to keep your enemies close to you, so you know who they are. It would also be to try and not make so many enemies as you go through life.

4 out of 5 stars The Mango Opera.......2006-06-01

Throughout the years, many authors have written mysteries that involve Key West. In the past, Tom Corcoran has lived in the Key's and knows what the culture and life style is there. In this book, The Mango Opera, Corcoran uses a unique writing style. While reading the book, you would get the feeling that you're watching a movie, rather than reading because of the number of people in which are involved. Corcoran's main idea is to get the reader thinking, and wondering who the killer is. Everything the reader knows is from the main character, Alex Rutledge's perspective. He gives the reader about a multitude of different possible suspects that keep you on the edge of your seat. As the author, Corcoran does a great job at making the reader think about what is going on in the book, sometimes the reader has so much to comprehend, that it's almost confusing. The reader often might question if Rutledge could be a prime suspect, because of his connections with the first murder, and then the rest of the girls that follow. Throughout the book, you will learn to trust your good friends, rely on them, and trust them with your life. Along with this book, it connects to two other books that Corcoran has written, all of which involve Key West mysteries, and are made to keep the reader wondering who the murder is. If your looking for a mystery and murders, along with some laughter, this book is a great choice for you.

5 out of 5 stars The Mango Opera.......2006-05-31

Key West has produced many authors. Tom Corcoran is one of those. His past occupations have been very diverse, everything from U.S. Navy officer to AAA travel counselor. Now he is an author with a unique writing style. His ability to use imagery is amazing. He can describe a scene so that it is like looking at a photograph in your mind. Corcoran is a great mystery writer because he is also very good at foreshadowing. He can drop little hints throughout the book to make you think you know exactly what is going to happen and then throw you a curveball and completely turn the story around. He does a great job with characterization as well. As you read the story, you become familiar with the characters, as if it is someone that you would know as a friend. Corcoran is writing this book to show readers what life is like in the keys. It is not just a tropical paradise where nothing can go wrong. It is a real place where crime, corruption, and bad things do happen. The Mango Opera is about the deaths of some of some of the main character's friends. The plot contains corruption of the police, murder, theft, rape, jealousy and revenge. The author achieves his purpose because he makes it very clear that Key West is not all that it seems. Corcoran does a great job of introducing many characters so that it is hard to tell who the culprit is. Because of this, it is a good idea to jot down notes while you read so that you can keep the story straight. The universal truth is that it is hard to trust people unless they are your closest friends.

4 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2006-03-23

I was a fan of the Travis McGee series by John D McDonald. I found this book measures up quite well. Alex Rutledge is a character that has quirks of his own. He is not a Policeman or detective or even a doctor, but a photographer that feels he needs to help solve murders because he knew the victims and perhaps potential victims.
Alex does not own a gun, nor does he feel the need to use one. He uses logic and his brain to get to the bottom of the case, despite the complexity of the number of characters he must deal with, and the complexity of the characters themselves.
I just finished the book and promptly put more of the books in the series on my wish list.

The second book in the Sorcery Series is a lot harder than the first, and you probably won't make it through without starting over a couple of times. To unlock the magical gate at the far edge of the city, you must find 4 spell lines scattered throughout Khare. Part of what makes these books cool is that you see & do interesting things even when you are on the "wrong" path - you don't just die like in other choose-your-own-adventure books. Even though you can play this one right away, it's a LOT easier if you did certain things in Sorcery! 1.

I just received my copy of Combat Command and was disappointed to find that it was a combination choose your own adventure and war game story. I was hoping for another Troopers style adventure perhaps expanding on the doctrines and technology of the Mobile Infantry described in Heinlein's original novel. Unfortunately that was not to be. I gave it three stars and I will probably read it over thoroughly, but I am disappointed none the less. If there are any others out there as engaged in thinking about what the specifics of the Mobile Infantry might be drop me a line I would be interested in a discussion.

When you think "macrobiotic," do you picture unseasoned brown rice, raw sprouts, and no taste? Abandon the stereotype, because macrobiotic cooking is both varied and tasty, especially with the recipes in this cookbook.

Macrobiotic cooking uses these food groups:
                  1. 30-50% of the diet is whole grains, the main staple food: brown rice, whole wheat, oats, corn, millet, barley, rye, buckwheat, and foods made with cracked grains and whole grain flour.
                  2. 30-50% is vegetables, in season and grown locally when possible, and sea vegetables, which store and travel well.
                  3. 5-15% can be beans, soy foods, or occasional seafood.
                  4. In moderation: fruits, seeds, nuts.

Author Meredith McCarty is codirector of the East-West Center for Macrobiotics in Eureka, California. She explains the basics of cooking whole grains and soyfoods, and walks us through the use of unfamiliar ingredients such as sea vegetables and grain beverages. Recipes include Stand-Up Cabbage Sushi, Nutty Noodle Bake, Mexican Rice, Journeycakes (American Indian flatbread), Green Corn Tamale Bake, Japanese Cool Noodle Salad, Baked Tempeh with Lemon-Mustard Sauce, and Lemon-Lime Pudding Pie. Far from an austere diet, the recipes are as hearty, ethnically varied, and tasty as they are healthy. --Joan Price

Unlike most cookbooks for vegetarians or health concious folks the American Macrobiotic Cookbook is full of good information, as well as delicious recipes. The illustrations are complimentary to the style of writing and it's an all around good introduction to macrobiotic cooking.

This book is a great introduction to the various foods that are eaten according to Macrobiotic principles, in plain English. Each of the basic foods is described, along with handling and preparation information. I am looking forward to trying some of the desserts! I was worried that this style of eating would be very limiting and dull but this book dispels that idea with the variety of meals it presents.

And for someone who lived for flavorful food, that's sure saying something. The Goldbecks have been fixtures in the American whole-foods movement for more than a decade, and here they have thoroughly succeeded with their goal of creating "mouth-watering food that tastes great and happens to be healthful."

They call the whole-foods diet a "Darwinian" one because it's similar to the diet that our ancestors followed 50,000 years ago--"foods provided by our habitat." The Goldbecks write, "Just as we cannot put unleaded gasoline in our 1950 Chevy pickup and expect it to run efficiently, modern technological foods may be inappropriate for our prehistoric bodies." The simplicity of this theory is outstanding, although rushed lifestyles and the ubiquity of convenience foods make it easy to eat overprocessed, unnutritious junk at every meal. With most of its delicious recipes utilizing seven or fewer ingredients, however, American Wholefoods Cuisine can help you take the plunge into a healthier way of feeding your body.

5 out of 5 stars American Wholefoods Cuisine.......2007-08-10

Trying to find a good all round vegetarian cookbook is quite a difficult task. Many of the vegetarian cookbooks I've come across are either gourmet and not really suitable for everyday meals or full of bland tofu recipes that resemble cardboard in taste and texture. Finding recipes that use only whole foods is even more difficult. I've only come across one or two good ones that had maybe a half dozen recipes that I could actually use in daily life. The rest were either extremely laborious or required fresh foods that weren't readily available in my area.

Then I stumbled across American Wholefoods Cuisine. I was intrigued with the notion of vegetarian recipes that contained all whole foods. I expected and would have been quite happy with a cookbook that gave me a dozen decent dishes to try. Therefore, when I received the book and it contained 1300 meatless whole foods recipes, I was thrilled beyond belief.

American Wholefoods Cuisine has already become one of my staple cookbooks, along with a few old standbys given to me by my mother and mother-in-law. This book has a lot of everything from quick tasty snacks that I can make in a few minutes to full gourmet meals that I can make when I'm in the mood. In between there are all sorts of appetizers, soups, sauces, main dishes, side dishes, desserts, and baking treats. All easy to create with ingredients that I already have in my kitchen.

Most importantly, the food made from these recipes actually tastes good. For the first time in my life, I can eat completely healthy and not feel like I'm missing out on something. What's more, I have an ever-expanding group of young adults that are devouring everything I make as fast as I can cook.

                  5 out of 5 stars my favourite.......2007-06-07

I originally bought American Wholefoods Cuisine in the early 80's when my children were small. It quickly became our favourite cookbook. I like their philosophy, the recipes are very good and it has one of the most complete indexes I've ever seen. The introduction explains how to be sure you are getting complete protien when you eliminate animal protien from your diet. There is a section on food handling and storage as well as cooking techniques. I was pleased to see that it was available again. My current copy is much loved and I wanted to give a copy to each of my girls so they can recreate the favourite recipes of their childhood. In the past 20 years, hardly a week goes by without my consulting it.

5 out of 5 stars So many great recipes, so little time.......2007-05-13

My sister-in-law recommended this book. She had prepared one recipe for a meal we shared during a recent visit and it was great. I asked for the receipe and she provided the title and said she had not found a bad recipe yet. I immediately ordered the book when I got home. My wife and I love this book. We keep going through it and writing down recipes we want to try. We have yet to find one that we don't like. Each is a repeat for the future

4 out of 5 stars good veggie stuff.......2007-03-22

we are not vegetarians, but purchased this book as a part of our effort to incorporate more vegetarian meals into our weekly menu. i really appreciate that they mark the recipes with major, minor or protein complement so you can build a nutritionally sound meal that is also satisfying. i also like to short-list of themed menus at the back that makes planning meals easier. not all recipes have been winners, but we have enjoyed several quite a bit and nothing has been inedible. i dropped it from 5 to 4 stars bc the nutritional content of the meals is not provided and thus i have to do a lot of math in order to figure out how much fat/calories are in each dish.

5 out of 5 stars Cooking For The Masses.......2007-02-02

If you buy only one vegetarian cookbook, this is the one. There are no fancy pictures and the recipes are very basic, but I wore out my first copy and am now on my second. This must say something for it! It has not changed, either, for which I am thankful. The recipes cover a wide range of ethnic and North American dishes and there should be something there for everyone.

This book contained 100 pages of manuscript on whelping and breeding and care of neonates by Terri Shumsky. People who can no longer get this book should check out Terri Shumsky's HOW TO BUY AND RAISE A GOOD HEALTHY DOG, which contains all the same information given to Ann Seranne PLUS lots more.
Here's what Boxer Review said about Terri Shumsky's book.
                    The Book Shelf

How to Buy and Raise a Good Healthy Dog is mostly about breeding and
raising a dog. It contains one chapter on the buying of a dog, one chapter on general
health care (covering about 65 pages) and three appendixes on genetics, food and
                    nutrition and microchips.

"This is another Doral publication which was written by breeder and judge Terri Shumsky. The illustrations are effective particularly in regard to the birthing process. As a matter of fact, the information given in the "Having Puppies" chapter is exceptional and useful for both the novice and experienced breeder. I think that the information on general health care is quite sufficient for most dog owners. Other books which have been reviewed in this column (The Merck Veterinary Manual,Hands-On Dog Care, The Purina Encyclopedia of Dog Care and the Five Minute Veterinary Ready Reference) are perhaps too extensive for most health questions. Shumsky's book fills a niche of providing just about enough information."

This book is an eye-catching tribute to the beautiful and highly-regarded products of The Evans Case Company, both an early leader and the last major American manufacturer of cigarette lighters. Over 750 color photographs, images, and advertisements display many marvelous examples of The Evans Case Company's handiwork. While lighters in their many forms receive the most attention, the company's compacts, perfumers, and handbags are also well displayed. Also included in the text are a history of the company, newspaper articles, catalog pages and advertisements, and patent drawings. Rounding out the presentation, prices are provided in the captions for the items displayed. The prices listed cover objects in both good and mint conditions.

I bought this book for the history of the Evans Manufacturing company, and it was a great read. However, I am a collector of Evans compacts, and this book gave that topic only a small amount of space and only covered late '40s and '50s compacts. There are tons from the late '20s and '30s that could have been featured here as well to make the book worthwhile to me. But the book covers lighters really well, and if I choose to start collecting those, I will study this book hard before I make any choices.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely a good book to start with..........2005-06-07

I enjoy this book and think it is worth having in your library if you are interested in truly natural perfumery.

My one critcism is that many of the recipes include sandalwood (Santalum album), an oil that I have moral issues with using. It is a threatened species and I don't necessarily think it is responsible to encourage those beginning in their exploration to purchase and use it heavily. It's incredibly unfortunate because sandalwood is one of my favorite scents in the whole world, but I can't justify destroying a species to make perfume. Apparently the cultivated Austalian species, Santalum spicatum, is considered a good alternative. I wish she had at least mentioned the controversy in her book.

I suggest anyone interested in this book research the status of Santalum album, as well as alternatives for its use in perfumery prior to purchasing oils for the recipes. Hopefully the aromatherapy and natural perfumery community will begin to raise its consciousness regarding the overharvesting of plants for aesthetic and medicinal uses.

All in all, I recommend this book with the exception explained above. I took a half day class with Mindy Green last year and thought she was a wonderful teacher. She has a lot to offer.

                    5 out of 5 stars You'll never go back to store-bought perfumes!.......2005-05-05

As an aromatherapy educator and soapmaker, I love natural health and beauty products. Since I began using essential oils to create my own scent blends several years ago, I've never looked back, and I've never missed those overpriced, synthetic, store-bought perfumes that always ended up giving me a headache.

This enjoyable little book is a great place to begin to learn how to blend your own original perfume. In less than 100 pages, the author introduces 40 essential oils, 30 natural fragrance recipes, and two easy and instructive blending lessons. The book also features several handy charts; I find myself referring to the table on note type and odor intensity very often when choosing which oils will combine nicely together.

The book is put together in a very straightforward, user-friendly way. Rather than delving deeply into the science of aromatherapy (for that information, I highly recommend The Aromatherapy Companion, by Victoria Edwards, or any book by Valerie Ann Worwood), the author simply focuses on using all-natural, plant-derived essential oils to create scent blends. You can use these blends to make fragrant bath oils, body splashes, room freshening spritzes, linen and lingerie sprays, or, best of all, your own signature perfume.

Her recipes are great places to start - my favorites are Angel's Whisper and Chocolate Eclipse - but soon you'll become addicted to developing your own original blends.

P.S. The poetic quotations on perfume and scent that are scattered throughout the text are almost worth the price of the book itself!

4 out of 5 stars Good "starter" book for perfumers.......2004-10-11

I decided to purchase this one after reviewing a copy from the library. It is not a complete reference by any means, but if you're interested in blending your own fragrances and want to stick to exclusively non-synthetic ingredients, it is an excellent reference.

I would not recommend it if you're interested in exploring the "medicinal" aspects of aromatherapy (which are dubious, in my opinion, but I am certainly no expert). It focuses on 40 specific essential oils and does not give enough information on the aromatherapeutic qualities of each.

But if you're strictly interested in creating custom fragrances for yourself, this is a good starter. Perhaps not as "pretty" as Mandy Aftel's "Essence and Alchemy," but far more informative.

                        Book Description

Taking a fresh look at the art world of the 1960s, Caroline Jones argues that far from the countercultural stance associated with the decade, the artists she examines—including Stella, Warhol, and Smithson—identified their work with postwar industry and corporate culture. Drawing on extensive interviews with artists and their assistants as well as close readings of artworks, Jones explains that much of the major work of the 1960s was compelling precisely because it was central to the visual and economic culture of its time.

"Jones manages to analyze art works in their historical, political, and conceptual context, giving them a thickness of description rarely possible in standard art history. . . . This is one of the best books on the period I have read so far. To paraphrase Clement Greenberg, it gives contemporary art history a good name."—Serge Guilbaut, Bookforum

"Though we are some 30 years past the events of the '60s, our world is still largely responding to them, as this marvelous book amply demonstrates."—David McCarthy, New Art Examiner

                              Book Description

"This is the story I have been writing for my whole life. With my life." writes Valerie Miner in this elegant and compassionate account of her family's migration from Edinburgh's tenements across the world. The Low Road explores location and dislocation in a large, poverty stricken Scottish family. Focusing on the life journeys of her grandmother, her mother, and herself, Miner searches for truth about family members, unveiling family secrets and missing histories. This powerful and moving memoir is a dramatic passage through poverty, immigration, and national and sexual identity.

Utterly engrossing, The Low Road navigates between family fable and fact as Miner leads us through her discoveries about back-street abortion and tuberculosis, orphanhood, exile, estrangement, and reconciliation to reach a place of acceptance and understanding.
