Do you know the story of Sharon Kay Penman's first mystery novel, The Sunne in Splendour? She spent every spare moment for years--first as a law student, then as a lawyer--working on the book about Richard III. And when the only copy of the manuscript was stolen from her car, she sat down and wrote it again. Five excellent historical mysteries later, Penman has started a new series set even farther back in time. It's 1193, and King Richard has disappeared on his way back to England after fighting in the Crusades. Justin de Quincy, the well-educated but illegitimate son of a bishop, is tapped to search for the missing ruler, and he turns out to be just the chap to blow away the cobwebs that often hang over historical mystery. Other Penman picks: Falls the Shadow; Here Be Dragons; Reckoning.

Book Description

Epiphany, 1193. Eleanor of Aquitaine sits upon England's throne. Her beloved son Richard Lionheart is missing, presumed dead - and the court whispers that her younger son, John, is plotting to seize the crown. Meanwhile, on the snowy highroad from Winchester, a destitute young man falls heir to a blood stained letter, pressed into his hand by a dying man. The missive becomes Justin de Quincy's passport into the queen's confidence - and into the heart of danger, as he pursues a cunning murderer and jousts with secret traitors in Eleanor's court of intrigue and mystery . . .

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining medieval mystery.......2007-10-08

Having read and watched several of the Brother Cadfael mysteries, I picked up The Queen's Man. I read through it in a couple of days, intrigued by the story and enjoying Sharon Kay Penman's clear, flowing writing style. She includes plenty of historical background without turning it into a history lesson; the characters are engaging and the mystery kept me guessing right up to the end. I would most definitely pick up her other books, and encourage you to give The Queen's Man a try!

3 out of 5 stars Quick, light read.......2007-05-30

On the bright side it kept my interest for the 6 hours, or so it took to read it and it made a long plane flight easier. On the other hand it is a simple story, with simple characters and at times Justin was frustrating doltish. Maybe she was trying to convey the naivety of a country boy in the 1100s, but good thing he was lucky. The twists and turns in the plot were predictable.

3 out of 5 stars not enough suspense.......2007-05-06

Sharon Kay Penman writes very good non fiction about the Medieval times. Now she has used that quality to write medieval detectives. You can see that she knows that period (King Richard, Prince John) very well. The everyday life and atmosphere are decribed in detail and work fine for me. However, the story is not very eventfull and suspense is almost absent. Still I ordered the following 4 books of the serie, so it must not be all too bad!

5 out of 5 stars Well writen medieval mystery novel that starts the "de Quincey" series.......2007-04-29

With the Queen's Man Sharon Kay Penman introduces a new mystery series with fictional sleuth Justin de Quincey as its lead character. While I have read others in the series with great enjoyment, this first one is exceptionally good and it introduces many of the characters that you will see in other books.

The series is set in England during the last decade of the twelfth century. The "Queen" of the title is Eleanor, who is depicted in her later years as the Queen Mother of Richard the Lionheart. Penman does an excellent job of humanizing and bringing to life both this famous queen and her famous son Prince John. Richard is away during this book (and several sequels) and his absence and John give the book its plot.

The mystery itself is well written with many imaged, but realistic characters. The plot is quite well done, but the fact that Penman's previous works have been historical novels means that you get a much better written mystery than a lot of other mystery writers are capable of creating.

Overall this book is generally recommended for anyone who enjoys the medieval period or mysteries and highly recommended for fans of Penman's historical novels or fans of other medieval mystery series like the Dame Frevisse or Sister Fidelma books.

Later de Quincey mysteries have settings in Wales and France as well, giving an interesting glimpse into other parts of the medieval world in that decade.

3 out of 5 stars Good read for lover's of medieval times.......2007-01-05

Sharon Penman's writing style brings to mind the novels of Diana Gabaldon. The Queen's Man is an intriguing mystery with interesting plot lines and characters. While not as detailed as the Gabaldon novels, The Queen's Man is an enjoyable read.

          1 out of 5 stars PASS.......2007-08-14

This book is written as ugly as Hederick looks on the cover. It ambles along like I imagine Hederick walks, all out of breath and stuggling to make it to the end.

My dog tore up the book the other morning, and I can only imagine that she read it and felt the same way I do about this book.

          4 out of 5 stars A very good book!.......2001-10-26

By the end of this book, even though I knew Hederick survived to see the Chronicles, I wanted this guy dead!

The Seekers were evil. Their methods were cruel & their reasons made you want to pull your hair out. Hederick was the worst of them all.

3 out of 5 stars Villain's great, but the hero deserved to be grated.......1999-03-16

This book is a combination of two extremes: on one hand, a detailed, capturing portrait of the nefarious Hederick, no more than three pages in the "Chronicles" Saga. On the other hand... a pathetic group of mismatched "heroes": a seventy year-old ex-Seeker, a misguided but well-meaning mage, a thief who seems to be the only sensible character, and centaurs and kender and slaves for no reason than they could be there. There are some pointless chapters but a lot of good scenes with Hederick. If you can get past the fact there isn't much of a good guy to root for, you can see one of the best examples of villany in this book, in the title character.

5 out of 5 stars The Origion of the Seekers.......1998-03-01

I have read a few other books set in Solace and I heard of the Seekers. Didn't really know what they were 'till now. Hederick starts out in a small village where he worships a false god. Then a Seeker preist comes into town and converts Hederick. Then when his cleric sister comes back tot he town, he is forced to "Clense" it. He then goes on to become the world's most powerful religious leader.

4 out of 5 stars A wide variety, some stories better than others.......2005-11-12

There's a lot to be said about the stories in this collection. Most of those things are good: here we see a potential who's who of tomorrow's top sci-fi and fantasy writers. Some of the stories are excellent, dealing with everything from the end of the world to an office drone finding out there are aliens. There are stories of action and stories of fantasy.

My favorites are the ones by Joe Weinberg (the only author with two stories). But hey, that's just me.

                5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-09-24

This is a wonderful collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy! Great for ages 14-99!
I especially loved the "Raven Maid's Tale" and "The Beast of Bridgemere".

                  Product Description

This science fiction anthology contains 9 of the best short novels published in 2003. From the dust jacket description: In "The Green Leopard Plague," Walter Jon Williams tells of a philosopher who develops a way to make human skin photosynthetic--ending starvation as a tool of oppression. But his breakthrough has unforeseen repercussions . . . . John C. Wright describes life in a distant future after the sun has gone out and true humans are confined to a single giant pyramid in "Awake in the Night." William Barton sends a science fiction-loving teen "Off on a Starship"--an automated probe that carries him across space to a world where he's all alone, except for a robot that becomes increasingly . . . female. And in "Just Like the Ones We Used to Know," Connie Willis imagines the ultimate global warming effect: a freak snowstorm that effectively shuts down North America. From a distant future where both beer and rebellion brew in a tavern on Mars to an alternate WWII where the cutting-edge science is quantum biology . . . from a haunting story of a bizarre prison without guards or rules to a Bradbury-esque tale of small-town America, Best Short Novels: 2004 is a landmark collection of some of the finest short works in science fiction.

2 out of 5 stars Was it a very bad year?.......2005-12-06

This anthology was excellent last year, containing most of the Hugo-nominated short fiction. As a result, our SF discussion group (about a dozen regulars) chose it for our annual anthology selection. There was unanimous disappointment. It contained a variety of stories and some well-known writers, but nothing that many people liked. The most positive response was that one group member liked two of the stories. Opinions went downhill from there....There were even a lot of typos.
Maybe it was a bad year.

                    Book Description

For 27 years, the Science Fiction Poetry Association has selected the best science fiction, fantasy and horror-themed poetry for its prestigious Rhysling Awards. Given annually, the award takes its name from Robert A. Heinlein's legendary Blind Singer of the Spaceways. For the first time, the SFPA is offering its annual collection of Rhysling Award nominees for sale to the general public. Among the 40 poems reprinted in the 2004 Rhysling Anthology, you'll find work by Hugo Award winner Maureen McHugh and Nebual Award winner Richard Chwedyk; literary voices such a Diane Ackerman; verse from established veterans such as Ian Watson and Bruce Boston, and from hot new writers such as Theodora Goss and Tim Pratt. If you're a fan of speculative poetry, or seeking to experience it for the first time, you won't want to miss this anthology.

Review From Analog Science Fiction & Fact Magazine:

"Every year, the Science Fiction Poetry Association awards its Rhysling Awards for best long and short poems in the fields of SF, fantasy, and horror. The 2004 Rhysling Anthology presents the 2003 works of members of the SFPA deemed worthy as contenders for the awards. If you have any taste for this side of the SFF field, it's an excellent chapbook to acquire. Sources for the material include major genre magazines, small press magazines, and single-author chapbooks (such as Mike Allen's PETTING THE TIME SHARK). The poets covered include Diane Ackerman, Mike Allen, Bruce Boston, John Grey, David Kopaska-Merkel, Maureen McHugh, Steve Sneyd, John Teehan, Ian Watson, and many more. The poems themselves vary widely in approach content, and cleverness. I liked Allen's "How I will Outwit the Time Thieves," Grey's "Night of the Living Dead," Kopaska-Merkel's "The Mad Scientist Has All the Time in the World," and Teehan's "What to Do When an Alien Spacecraft Lands and the Visitors Come Out to Greet You" (for one thing, "If you own a tractor or pet pig! , hide them before giving any major interviews")." --Tom Easton, Analog

"The book you are now holding...is surely proof that there is, once again, a 'vital community of science fiction poets.' That membership of the Science Fiction Poetry Association is large and active enough to produce an anthology of this size-by far the largest in the 28-year history of the Rhysling Awards-and that today's market conditions are able and willing to support the publication of the first-ever perfect bound Rhysling Anthology are clear signs of the energy surrounding genre poetry-and promising portents of what lies ahead. (To mention nothing of the quality of the poetry that follows.)" -from the Preface by Drew Morse

This is more than a cookbook. Jasinski and Sokolowski begin with a thoughtful account of the sufferings of Poland. There is also discussion of the Wigilia (Christmas Eve supper), the Lenten fast, and the sumptuous Easter dinner.

A table of equivalent measurements is provided. The dishes elaborated in this book include meats, such as leg of lamb, kiszka, kielbasa, and ham. The pastries discussed include filled cream puffs (paczki), chruscik, and mazurek.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any lover of great foods!.......2003-01-08

My Italian mother-in-law gave me this as a gift, knowing of my heritage. I picked up my own copy at Piekutowski's European Style Sausage (the BEST Krawkow and Jewish Rye in the St. Louis area), a place I have been going since a small child. .

With recipes as varied as Czarnina, Bigos, the ever-beloved Pierogi, and Ciastka z Bakaliami (Fruit Rocks), this book has been a priceless resource; giving insight into not only the hows of traditional Polish cooking, but the underlying whys of various cultural influences. It also provides a unique insight into the ties between food and religion from basically Polish/Catholic daily life.

This book has been given to every successive generation in my family as a must have book on Polish cooking and tradition. Starting with my great grandmother (who was from Poland), down to me, this book has been great to all of us. There are a variety of different recipies, stories, and information about traditions all broken down in a very logical, easy to use manner. A must for all Polish Americans!

This is a great anthology of all Polish recipes and tells many different variations for each one. It's especially handy to have the history and traditions related to different foods described in the text.

I discovered this lovely little cookbook in an obscure shop. It is a great introduction to the Polish cultural culinary traditions. Even though the cookbook is small it has a ton of recipes. More than that it has a well written brief history of the traditional foods of Poland. It's a glimpse into the past with the goal of being carried into the future.

                                      Book Description

No home with a puppy should be without Puppy Preschool.Congratulations! You have (or are thinking seriously of raising) a cute new puppy. He's warm, cuddly, great to hold and pet-- and simply a lot of fun.But watch out! Your adorable ball of fur can be a doggone handful. Given half the chance, he may take it upon himself to eat your furniture, terrorize the kids, dig up the garden, jump on your friends, and eliminate at the most inappropriate times.Let's face it, sometimes what you get raising a puppy can be a "dog's breakfast"-- a mixed bag of happiness and hassle. In order to make it through puppyhood with your sanity still in tact, you need to enroll your pup in Puppy Preschool. Here, in Puppy Preschool, John Ross and Barbara McKinney, the country's foremost dog-training experts, reveal the benefits of early training in this definitive guide devoted exclusively to the trials and triumphs of puppy rearing. Puppy Preschool rewrites the rules on puppy training. While previous training books begin their programs when the puppy has already reached four months of age, Puppy Preschool begins educating and disciplining at just eight weeks old, the time when most puppies are brought into their new homes. Using surefire, revolutionary techniques, Ross and McKinney provide a much-needed head start on good behavior. They offer essential training rules that will be useful throughout your puppy's formative education, including information on:* The right breed for your family or your lifestyle* The ten best breeds for the home* Early leash and collar procedures* Housebreaking* Preventing unwanted chewing* Health and grooming tips* Emergency care* Essential puppy-training equipment and safe, fun toys* A breakdown of puppy development from birth to eighteen months* The best ways for small children to interact with puppiesdn0Based on the same training philosophy presented in their classic book, Dog Talk, of raising your dog from a "canine point of view," Ross and McKinney give easy-to-follow training techniques that will make puppy rearing a great experience for everyone involved.

I have read 5 different dog / puppy books and several magazines. I think this is definately the best I've read so far. It teaches you how to be the pack leader ... too many books gloss over that completely. The books I've read before haven't really addressed the fact that dogs don't think the way people do. For some reason, Americans are always trying to humanize their pets... they treat them like little people, thinking dogs understand or think the way we do. Wrong! The result - most 'American' dogs are badly behaved - and end up unwanted. I've noticed that Germans have very well behaved dogs and people don't get rid of / or give up their pets like Americans do. I think it's because Germans treat their dogs like dogs, not like little people. Get this book BEFORE you get a puppy and study it!!! You will be happy and your puppy will be happy. Remember, if you aren't the pack leader - your dog will assume the role (whether he wants to or not... someone MUST be the pack leader, even if it has to be the dog). If it isn't you, you'll end up miserable (because your dog is out of control) and so will the dog... because you just might end up getting rid of him. And you'll be missing out on a great relationship with your canine companion. Read this book to get you off on the right start, ... then follow up with Dog Talk.

I love this book!!!! My first puppy was driving me crazy!!! We just could not understand each other. My mom recommended Puppy Preschool, and it was a life saver. We just got another puppy, and I re-read the book. It gives a ton of insight on the way a puppy thinks. It is extrememly helpful, even for those who think they already know. It is written in a conversational style that is easy to follow. John Ross's own personal experiences are nice examples for his points and also funny. I would not get a puppy without this book.

We had a Cocker shortly after we got married, followed by a Dachshund, another Cocker then a Lhasa Apso/Poodle .During that time we raised 3 children who have now given us 8 Grandchildren between them.So you'd think at 70,we know about all there is to know about kids and dogs,so did we.We lasted about 7 months and finally broke down and brought home Bailey. She is Yorkshire Terrier/Toy Poodle. The mother ,the Terrier, weighed about 9 pounds while the father ,the Toy Poodle ,all of 3 pounds. It looks like Bailey will top out at 5 to 6 pounds. After living with dogs for so long, and being without one for a while,it's wonderful to have one back in our lives and home again.
With all our experiences over the years you'd think that this little squirt would be a piece of cake.Let me tell you, what we got here is not only a cross between a Terrier and a Poodle ;but a cross between 9 pounds of love and 3 pounds of dynamite.
It didn't take long to convince us that we better do things right, because after consulting all the actuarial tables, both for dogs and humans,it is highly likely that she'll outlive us and have to take care of us in our twilight years.
Therefore,no more operating off the cuff;we got this book and are now learning how to do it right. The book is first class and I can attest already that the author knows what he is talking about. At this stage of the game we won't be having any more kids, but if we were ,I'd check to see if he's written one entitled "Kid Preschool".
The author makes one point perfectly clear, and that is that the relationship between both you and your dog will be a lot happier if you apply what is in this book.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A fabulous training resource!.......2006-02-07

I bought this book prior to purchasing my first puppy Zora. Although my family has had dogs all of my life, she is my first dog, and as she will be a part of my life for many years, I really wanted to learn everything that could help makes those years fun and enjoyable for both of us. I must say this book is indispensible! Author John Ross clearly has a great passion for dogs. While he is a strong advocate of positive training, he also believs that negative behavior should be humanely repremanded. His training techniques are very logical and use a lot of plain common sense. He addresses several dog training myths that even the most experience dog owners may fall prey to. What makes this book stand out is Ross's obvious love for his dogs, and all dogs in general. He promotes responsible dog ownership and encourages training one of the ways to be a responsible pet owner. 60% of all dogs in shelters are there because of behavior problems. Ross's theory is that most of these dogs wouldn't have to be there had their owners takes the time to properly train them. What makes this book a true classic is Ross's method of presenting his information. he is a truly gifted writer who is a joy to read. His writing style is warm, readable, and full of amusing anecdotes. This book is a true gem and I would argue also a must for all dog owners.

5 out of 5 stars Basic Armor Modeling.......2000-10-07

This was the first book I bought when I started modeling 2 years ago, and I still go back to read it some more. The chapters on painting and weathering also appear in his other excellent book, "How to Build Dioramas". You might want to get this instead if you dabble in different types of scale model building. If you're an armor aficionado like I am, this book is a must, even if you already have a few models under your belt. There are lots of helpful tips, especially on scratchbuilding details and accessories. This has been written some time ago, and you may find some of his techniques a bit dated, but this has withstood the test of time gracefully.

This book is good for all those people who like to build armor models. It starts with the most basic assembly and then goes into scratch building a must for any new-comer in the world of modeling.

                                                  Book Description

We have been living through boom times for the Future. Even during the relative calm before the escalating storms of 2001, our cultures and industries collaborated in a remarkable proliferation of words and images about this impossible entity, the Future. In recent years, the very thought "future" has been spectacularized in extraordinary ways. Produced in coordination with Duke University Press's forthcoming book of the same title, this volume explores the ways in which "the Future" is a placeholder for fantasies and anxieties very much connected to the present. Dan Rosenberg profiles Theodor Holm Nelson, inventor of hypertext; Joseph Masco investigates the "desert Modernism" of the Nevada Test Site and Liberace's Las Vegas; and "The Japanese Futurist Manifesto," written in 1928, is published for the first time in English. Also in this issue, Ben Marcus on the color "Khaki," David Levi Strauss on Leon Golub's photographic archive, a history of paint-by-numbers, a CD compilation of historical political speeches including Woodrow Wilson's address to the American Indian, and more.

                                                  Book Description

Asked to name the greatest living sax player, most jazz musicians and fans will agree: Sonny Rollins. It's no surprise that Theodore Walter Rollins, born in 1930 in Harlem, should win this title. His playing combines a rich and vibrant tone, melodic and rhythmic inventiveness, and a healthy dose of humor. Albums such as Way Out West and Freedom Suite are considered classics, and Rollins's compositions such as "St. Thomas" and "Doxy" are popular at jam sessions around the world. Peter Niklas Wilson's biography presents a man on a constant spiritual quest and an artist plagued by self-doubt. The book provides an in-depth analysis of key aspects of Rollins's music and his eccentric repertoire. An annotated and illustrated discography surveys the nearly 100 albums he has recorded throughout his lengthy career.

I am a jazz musician myself , and I adore this book ! Especially the "Style" section , Mr. Wilson is telling the truth of Sonny's playing , if you were kinda confused by Schuller's 1958 analysis of "Blue 7" as well , get this book and read it , then listen to the recording again , you gonna find out Sonny didn't "think" like scholars thought .

The earlier Ornette Coleman book is in the similar layout , and it's also superb !

As I just retired and wanted to start understand better the jazzmusic, that I am following since 40 years, this is the first book I bought for this purpose. It will definitely suit this purpose. At first I read it as a novel, including the extensive discography. I then could situate all the Rollins' records and tracks that I collected over the years. Next, but most extensive and the most interesting further use will be to systematically go through my records and study them based on the comments in this book. I am looking forward to much additional joy with the book and to improve my understanding of jazz in general.
