Book Description

A brand-new Elizabeth Peters novel is one of the uncompromising pleasures in life. As Peter Theroux in the New York Times Book Review points out, "Her wonderfully witty voice and her penchant for history lessons of the Nile both ancient and modern keep (her) high adventure moving for even the highest brows". In her previous outing, The Last Camel Died at Noon, Amelia Peabody and her dashing husband, Emerson, discovered a fabulous lost oasis in the Nubian desert. Now, in the seventh mystery in the series, the Emerson-Peabodys are traveling up the Nile once again to encounter their most deadly adversary, the Master Criminal, who is back at his sinister best. Amelia Peabody was unabashedly proud of her newest translation, a fragment of the ancient fairytale "The Doomed Prince". Later, she would wonder why no sense of foreboding struck her as she retold the story of the king's favorite son who had been warned that he would die from the snake, the crocodile, or the dog. Little did she realize, as she and her beloved husband sailed blissfully toward the pyramids of ancient Egypt, that those very beasts (and a cat as well) would be part of a deadly plot. The expedition began so happily....Leaving their delightful, but catastrophically precocious, son, Ramses, back in England, Amelia hoped this romantic trip might rejuvenate her thirteen-year-old marriage and bring back the thrills that she feared were fading. She and her dear Emerson were returning to the remote desert site where they had first fallen in love, Amarna, the holy city of Akhenaton and his beautiful queen, Nefertiti. But their return would threaten not only their marriage, but their very lives with perils as chilling as a mummy'scurse. An old enemy was determined to learn Amelia and Emerson's most closely guarded secret: the location of a legendary long-lost oasis and a race of people bedecked in gold. So cunning was his scheme that Amelia might overlook - until it was too late - the truth about

4 out of 5 stars Amelia's at it again!.......2007-08-29

Once again, the fearless Amelia & the sexy-sounding Emerson are up against foul deeds and dark doings! With her trusty (if somewhat lethal) parasol grasped firmly in her hand, Amelia makes you laugh while admiring the dogged enthusiasm the author has inserted into her heroine...A really good read, as enjoyable on the last page as the first.

4 out of 5 stars AMELIA PEABODY, #7.......2006-03-07

Elizabeth Peters has written another adorable little mystery in her Amelia Peabody series. The no nonsense, take charge, verrry British Amelia is spending another season in Egypt with her hunky, brilliant husband Radcliffe Emerson. And, the good news is that Ramses, her genius ten-year-old son is staying in England with his newly adopted sister at his Aunt and Uncle's castle. Ramses is a continuous source of exasperation to his mother who has little patience with her precocious son; subsequently she is thrilled to have her husband, Emerson all to herself. Even after eleven years of marriage, Amelia will melt while just looking at her husband's dimpled chin.

It is a good thing that 'Peabody' is so in love with Emerson because in this book, he is a lout! He acts like a spoiled, petulant child with no thought of anyone but himself. I really didn't like him at all. I am amazed at the devotion to Emerson from his wife and his devoted workers because he certainly doesn't deserve it. Of course, as usual for this series there is a lot of action that includes a kidnapping, amnesia, and impersonations.

I missed the romance between the main characters and I also missed Ramses. The best parts of the book were his letters to his mama and papa.
Although I loved reading this book (as I have this entire series), I really liked the first six books a tad better. Here's hoping #8-18 will be fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars A little different, but just as good.......2005-04-24

The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog is a little different from the preceding books. Still, I enjoyed it at least as much. If you prefer Emerson and Amelia to Ramses, you'll rejoice at this book, where he provides some comic relief without hogging the story. In this one, you get to know Amelia a lot better. Since it's set in Amarna, not Luxor, it helps if you've read the first one because there's a lot of allusions.
In addition, it had a great climax and a magnificent ending. I really enjoyed this one - it might be one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars From any other other author this would not have flown........2005-01-24

If any other author had tried to handle this story, it would have fallen flat. Convenient cases of amnesia are so unbelievable. But Ms. Peters takes this in her stride, and still goes ahead and writes a good adventure story. It is probably because of the strength of her characters that she can carry this off. As unbelievable as the whole amnesia thing was, I found that I couldn't put the book down once I began. I enjoyed it all, and not the least of which were Amelia and Emerson's son Ramses letters from home. These were hilarious, and I couldn't get enough of them. Ms. Peters has written a story that actually surprised me by the ending. It's a whole lot of fun, and now, I can't wait until the next one. These books are really addictive.

2 out of 5 stars My First Real Disappointing Amelia Peabody Book.......2004-11-23

I just did not like this book, it just did not have much of a point. Even the usual witty repartee between Amelia and Emerson wasn't enough to salvage this book for me. The whole plot seems pointless with Amelia and Emerson just meandering around Egypt's various famous archaeological sites. As much as I hate to admit it, I really missed Ramses, and that whole England bit was far too boring. Let's hope the next book redeems the series for me.

Unabridged on thirteen compact discs. Although this seventh in the series picks up where The Last Camel Died at Noon (Warner, 1991) ends, it stands delightfully on its own. Amelia's self-assuredness, her devotion to her husband, and her honesty with her readers match well her inventive embrace of adventure. Danger, although constantly present, is balanced with intrigue, confidences, romance, and intellectual exercise as readers gallop headlong into the mysteries surrounding a venture on the Nile. Teens will enjoy fine writing, learn some Egyptian history and meet an indomitable heroine, all between these covers.

The back wall of Gideon Sunday's pantry was missing that night -- and in its place was a doorway into another world. Not the sort of thing an unemployed ex-football player expects to find when he's looking for a jar of jam! Worse, the magical forces of this other world have determined that he, Gideon, is the mythic hero destined to combat and destroy the dreaded Tide of Blood that threatens to engulf the land of Chey. But when Gideon Sunday is handed a ball, he takes it and runs... And so, with the lovely lady Glorian, her long-lost and long suffering brother Tag, a magical weapons maker and the great telepathic lorra, Red, Gideon sets off on a most improbable quest: first, to locate and recover an enchanted duck who holds the key to Gideon's power, and then to turn back the tides of horrific destruction.

In Ithaca, the villagers so revere the olive that they give names to the olive trees that bear them. We're not talking upstate New York here, but Greece, the land that gave us rosy-fingered dawns and spanakopita. Diane Kochilas gives us the Greek way with vegetables in The Greek Vegetarian, and she should be given some kind of humanitarian award for the effort. For anyone fussing over increasing greens, vegetables, and grains while reducing the place of meat in the usual American diet, The Greek Vegetarian is a place of comfort and repose, a place to settle back in the sun and flip through the pages and let the deliciousness of all these wonderful food ideas lap over your life like warm waves from the Aegean Sea.

There are 100 recipes herein, and they come from the traditions of Greek cuisine. No one is stretching just to make a dish vegetarian (oh, OK: there's one recipe for vegetarian souvlaki). Only recently have Greeks gained the dubious title of biggest meat eaters in Europe, and even then all they did, according to the author, was make their plates bigger for the added meat. They still eat a diet rich in vegetables. Always have; always will.

But some specifics. Kochilas divides her book into Meze, the little dishes of Greece, and Main Meals, the pastas, soups, stews, casseroles, savory pies and breads, the egg dishes. There's Beet and Apple Salad with a Yogurt Dressing, for starters. How about Roasted Eggplant and Chickpea Salad? Or Arugula Salad with Wrinkled Olives and Orange Slices? The Classic Greek Bean Soup is included. So too is a dish of Potatoes Stewed with Kalamata Olives. The possibilities build, one upon the other. This book bursts with flavor the same way a vine-ripened, sun-warmed tomato bursts at the first bite. It will dribble down your chin if you're not careful. --Schuyler Ingle

Diane Kochilas says and I quote,
"There is a certain elemental quality to all the cooking of Greece that seperates it from the cooking to the east and to the west, that is from the cooking of Turkey on one side and of Italy on the other."
I am a gourmet cook and I don't know what Kochilas is talking about in terms of Turkish cooking. The Greek foods are heavily influenced by the Turkish cooking in fact it is hard to find dishes that are NOT shared by these 2 countries on either side of the Aegean. Many recipes in this book have Ottoman Turkish origins. Yet the author denies any Turkish influence. Sour grapes, Diane????? I think so.

                          1 out of 5 stars Chocolate Memorabilia.......2003-06-02

We recently purchased this book along with several others from Schiffer for resale in our antique shop. We were very disappointed with this book and would not recommend it to anyone. The book is poorly written and lacks any kind of insight into the history of chocolate companies other than Wilburs. The book misrepresents itself as a book on chocolate memorabilia. There were dozens of chocolate manufacturers during the turn of the century and we would have liked to have seen others represented. Historically many of these designs were manufactured in the Chicago, Ill. area and were sold by catalog. This is a great collection of many of these commercial designs that were offered only by mail order at one time.

4 out of 5 stars History in Design.......2000-09-08

This source book of 100 pages of design and motifs from around the world is complemented by 23 pages of descriptions of the elements in each of the "plates" which follow. These elements of design are explained, common and historical names for elements may be given, original colours used, origins of the designs included too. This extra detail gives the book its value, enriching the knowledge of the prospective user, rather than just providing a series of pretty pictures to be copied.

                            4 out of 5 stars A useful classic.......2000-04-13

This is a good sourcebook for classic Renaissance style and some Greek style illustrations. Much of the Renaissance art is Greek inspired. Especially noted are the beautiful, and out of the ordinary depictions of Aphrodite. It is intersting to see the Old Pagan influence in these historically accurate depictions.

Small books, big ideas. Cutting-edge publisher Lukas & Sternberg's pocket-book series spotlights some of the most intriguing international artists emerging today, with critical essays in English and German exploring the theoretical basis of their works. A growing series now featuring five titles. These Dutch artists received international recognition for their seemingly luxurious and self-reflexive 35mm films. This first comprehensive monograph discusses how Dutch painting, Minimal Art and film conventions become the backdrop for a "cinema in its decontextualized form". Essays by Vanessa J. Müller and Veit Loers. Interview by Nicolaus Schafhausen. In English and German text, Dimension: 43/8 x 63/4, includes 5 color reproductions.

5 out of 5 stars The African American missionary.......2003-11-11

William E. Phipps reconstructs the past and tells the story of the African American Livingston utilizing thorough research. Phipps details his preparation throughout his adolescent years, his journey to the Congo, his efforts to challenge human right violations and his return back to America. The author reveals to the readers to the forgotten African American missionary, which has been ignored by Black history for so long. There are two significance reasons why the story of William Sheppard has not been shared. First, Sheppard resigned from the Congo mission at its peak, due to being confronted about having affairs and an illegitimate child. Second, historians studying African American religion have paid relatively little attention to the overwhelmingly Caucasian Protestant churches. Sheppard was a pioneer missionary and an explorer that was second only to Livingston and Stanley in the opening of Central Africa. Phillips crafts a historical study in a seamless outline about Sheppard to help describe the colonization of the Congo. It is a perfect book for students wanting to learn the true story of King Leopold's Congo.

                                Book Description

Black Livingstone is the first book to chronicle the remarkable life of William Henry Sheppard. As a twenty-four-year-old African American missionary in 1890, Sheppard departed for what was then the Belgian Congo, accompanied by Samuel Lapsley, a white man who had grown up on a plantation and was the son of a prominent Alabama judge. Lapsley died of fever barely a year later, but Sheppard thrived in Africa for three more years before returning to America. Back home, Sheppard was billed as the "Black Livingstone" as he traveled the country, lecturing to packed auditoriums. Black and white, rich and poor alike came to hear his true tales of African adventure. One year later he returned to the Congo, where he witnessed and gathered testimony on the genocide being perpetrated by the Belgian government and the rubber companies, eventually helping to break their hold on the region.

Pagan Kennedy unfolds Sheppard's life and times with a novelist's narrative skill and penetrates the complexity of her subject-a man who found power in the Congo but not in the Church to which he dedicated his life, who fought the persecution of Africans but never of blacks in his own country. Beautifully illustrated with archival photographs, Black Livingstone will appeal widely to readers of books on African history such as King Leopold's Ghost and In the Footsteps of Mr. Kurtz, as well as readers of fiction set in Africa, like Barbara Kingsolver's bestseller, The Poisonwood Bible.

4 out of 5 stars The Unknown Black American Explorer.......2003-06-03

I think that this book gives an excellent, detailed look back on a greatly unknown black American explorer, William Henry Sheppard. Pagan Kennedy opens our eyes to history that is left out of history books. The Presbyterian missionary attempts to convert African tribes into "civilized Christians", but in the end fails because of his mishaps and disliking by a white missionary. I recommend this book to anyone interested in studying black American explorers, or anyone looking for information on the Belgium Congo.

5 out of 5 stars The humanitarian at heart.......2003-05-19

Black Livingstone is a remarkable tale, illustrating hardships, history, and the dignity and determination associated with two courageous explorers. Pagan Kennedy accurately portrays 19th century Africa, and shows the light and beauty of the "dark continent". Readers are bombarded with delicate representations of barbaric and striking images. In turn, it enables the reader to experience a deeper feeling of empathy for the abused Africans. This novel raises questions as to whose way of thinking was most primitive. This ironic twist reveals that perhaps the most civilized are the most barbaric by nature. The character Sheppard shows the Pontius Pilate in all of us. That no matter how much we want to strive for goodness, our weaknesses and dark sides, can get the best of us. The novels descriptive nature allows readers to see the intimacy Sheppard shared with the Kuba people, as well as the lack of intimacy he did share with his wife. A notable highlight of this novel is demonstrated when a more tasteless and uncouth side of Sheppard is shown. It showcases the human nature of Sheppard, and most men in general. Although not a difficult read, this book is recommended to those who care for the well being for the human race.

4 out of 5 stars William Sheppard should be better known.......2003-05-06

The life and work of William Sheppard should be better known. He was an African-American who escaped Jim Crow in the U.S. to become a missionary in Africa. He co-founded a Christian mission in Africa where they had been none before and for a time ran it single-handedly. He was also an amateur anthropologist/ethnologist and became the first foreigner to establish contact with the Kuba people of central Africa and to describe their culture to the outside world. On top of all that, he documented the cruelty of the King Leopold's Congo rule. Unfortunately, it is not clear that "Black Livingstone: A True Tale of Adventure in the Nineteenth-Century Congo" by Pagan Kennedy is up to the job of elevating William Sheppard to his rightful place in history. The book is well written, worth reading, and might be valuable to anyone interested in Africa, the Congo, or Christian missionaries, but a lot of the story is missing and is filled in with generalities from Sheppard's time. It may be the case that original documents concerning Sheppard's life are lost, and this is the best that can be done, or perhaps another book can do better. Four stars, but barely.

4 out of 5 stars The Tale of the Congo.......2003-04-15

Pagan Kennedy told the story of a African American missonary who wanted to convert the uncharted parts of the Congo to christianity. William Sheppard, the missionary, was very determined to complete his goal of converting the Congo even if it took his whole life. I Could not put the book down. The book was basically a detailed sum up of what really went on in the Congo. At some points in the book it almost seemed fictional because it was so hard to believe what was happening to him amd the people who were with him. The book was a very good read, but at some points hard to understand but that added to the suspense of the book. Overall the book was a very fun an interesting book to read. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the Congo or who wants to find a good book to read.

3 out of 5 stars Too Many "probablys".......2002-10-26

I agree that Pagan Kennedy is an excellent storyteller, and her telling of William Sheppard's story is spellbinding. Contrary to what some reviewers think, however, there is much more primary material available to the researcher than Kennedy seems to have used. Unfortunately, Black Livingstone is marred by too many suppositions--maybe, probably, perhaps, could have, should have, etc.--and the author attributes attitudes both to Sheppard and his associates that cannot be substantiated from records. William Phipps's biography, William Sheppard: Congo's African American Livingstone, presents a much more balanced picture of this important man's life and service.
