Customer Reviews:
I really enjoyed reading this.......2007-06-21
This is my first outing with Captain Gabriel Lacey--but it won't be my last. This book has everything a mystery should have: atmosphere, characters you can actually care about, a hint of danger, and multiple corpses. It is a shame that so many books in the series are out of print.
Cheers for Captain Lacey.......2007-04-20
This was my first Captain Lacey book, but it certainly won't be my last. I was disappointed when I couldn't get a hold of any more of Rosemary Stevens's charming Beau Brummell mysteries as I enjoy novels set in the Edwardian/Regency/Victorian eras, but Ms. Gardner have provided me with a complex and appealing new hero. I especially enjoy her descriptions of "how the other half live" in the two novels I have read thus far and find her female characters most interesting. I look forward to getting a hold of Lacey's earlier adventures as well as discovering what his future might be with Lady Breckenridge!
Finally, an actual mystery!.......2005-12-24
These days, it's not easy to find a true mystery; a murder, clues and a solution. This is just such a book! Captain Lacey is an interesting character, one whose merits are seen and valued by others much more than himself. He is a strong, appealing character with a history and unresolved issues. Lacey is supported by interesting secondary characters an a vivid depiction of the time period. The dialogue is well done; neither so focused on being of the period it slows down ones reading nor so modern as to be anachronistic. The story is involving so that I read it straight through. I very much enjoyed this book but it is best to read the series from the beginning. The good news is that the 5th book is due out June 2006.
Regency Mystery.......2005-07-21
An excellent continuation of a fine series. The atmosphere of Regency England is believable. While the villain was revealed about the middle of the story, more details of the protagonists past are revealed and a progress is seen in his character. You are left anticipating the next book in the series.

From peasant clay to hard rock to diamond . . ........2007-07-12
This is sort of the back-story to Moon's "Deed of Paksenarrion" trilogy, set some five hundred years before the time of the mercenary companies, a time when Gird is a hero, almost a demigod. But Gird is an ordinary enough farmer at the beginning, lover of cows and children, who wants only peace to raise and reap his crops. But the magelords, workers of magic, who came into the northern lands several centuries before his own time, have become increasingly oppressive to the peasants as they have lost their powers. Gird, who is a big, strong boy, tried to become a solider, a member of his lord's guard, but his horror at having to witness a bloody punishment for a child's act of mischief ends that career. And, later in life, as his friends and family are mistreated and starved and raped and killed, Gird finds himself outlawed, like so many others. But here he begins to change, and he uses what basic military skills he once learned to convert other outlaws into the basis of a rebellious peasant army. You know where all this is going, right? But even Gird the Marshal-General wants peace, not mere vengeance, and he spends as much time thinking about and learning the law as he does learning strategy. It's a morality play, Good against Evil, and a pretty good one. And because Gird is very human, with a temper and a tendency to drink too much, this isn't exactly a fairy tale, either.
Much more than your average cookie-cutter fantasy novel ..........2007-07-06
I am in the last pages of this book, and I'll be sorry to see it end. Paksenarrion was my introduction to Moon, and she keeps getting better. The characters a well-developed and multi-dimensional. From Gird's humble days as a farmer and failed guardsman to the fractious Marshals and mageborn trying to honor his legacy, this book takes the reader through tragedy and triumph and back again. The characters are not ideal people, and there is even a book within a book ... if you're looking for cookie-cutter fantasy with idealized heroes, perhaps you could ask Moon to publish Luap's Life of Gird :) The heroes in this book are very human--often very frustrating--and thus very easy to get to know. The story slows down a few times as Moon takes us through seemingly mundane details, only to introduce some new challenge or danger that builds on those very details. I recommend reading this book--and taking your time. This is a story to be savored, not devoured.
Inspiring!.......2006-05-25
This book is a prequel to Moon's DEED OF PAKSENARRION. It is every bit as good and, in some respects, even better. That is no small accomplishment.
The DEED trilogy tells the story of the paladin, Paksennarion. It is a wonderful story but it is based upon a created mythos of the land in which the character lives. Central to much of it is the yeomen, marshals and paladins of Gird. We learn only a little of Gird in that series but it is enough to whet the appetite. With SURRENDER NONE, the appetite is sated.
Gird is a peasant treated cruelly and unjustly by his feudal overlords. Finally, he is forced into outlawry but chooses not to follow the path of the brigand. He instead tries to make things better. He works for the betterment not only of his own people but even their oppressors as well and leads a peasant revolt. Unlike that of Spartacus, his succeeds.
This is a work of fantasy but, as in Moon's other works, the fantastic elements are understated. There are gnomes and mentions of dwarves and elves but they are accessories. Magic does play a role and is even one of the reasons for the struggle portrayed within the book but the story is not of the magical; it is of the people. That in itself is magical.
It is a wonderful read all the way around.
The story ended before it started........2005-10-07
In "Deed of Paksenarrion" there was very little explanation of the Girdish religion, so when I discovered this book I was very excited to learn more. It was very disappointing, though. Much of the plot didn't make sense to me (why, for example, is Luap so revered if Gird never even trusted him?), and it seemed like I was always waiting for character development to end and story to start. Actually, the first part of the book detailing Gird's rise to power was fairly good. The second part was the major disappointment. I would suggest reading this book only if you are very curious about the characters, or if you can't not finish a series. Deed of Paksenarrion is a much better read.
Excellent study in character conflict.......2003-06-21
Elizabeth Moon is known for her extraordinary characters. Legacy of Gird is no exception. You see something of an overlapping within the two parts to this book. The first focuses on Gird from his point of view. You see the internal and external struggles he faces as he tries to liberate his people. The second half (from the book "Liar's Oath") is seen from the POV of Gird's luap, aptly named Luap. Meant to be a trusted servant of sorts and never to command, you see Luap's struggles as he fights pressure, compulsion, and himself... all within Gird's shadow.
An excellent prequel to "Deed of Paksenarrion" that fantasy fans (and writers) would enjoy and learn from. I recommend reading "Deed of Paksenarrion" first since she makes two appearances in "Legacy of Gird", and it is a study in strong female character leads, though not a requirement, since you can easily follow along both books without reading the other.
Warning, this is a very lengthy read, and when you reach "Liar's Oath", the descriptions do tend to veer a little off track. However, this serves to highlight "Deed of Paksenarrion" and brings an excellent historical background to the series.
Customer Reviews:
Better-than-average psychodrama.......2007-07-17
This is the second half of the prequel to the "Deed of Paksennarion" trilogy, which also comes around at the end and bites it's own tail. Where Surrender None was about Gird and the peasant revolution he led against the mage-lords, this one begins with Gird's death (just before it, actually) and focuses on Luap, previously "the luap," Gird's assistant and sort of aide-de-camp. Luap is half-mage himself, the bastard of one of the kings before the one Gird killed, and he's infected with a lingering sense of entitlement that will eat away at him all the rest of his long, long life. He's not evil, just weak -- just human, as Gird was, but in a much less heroic way. Moon gradually builds multiple character portraits with her rather slow-moving narrative, including those of the first two proto-paladins, an aging mage-priest, and a large supporting cast. None of this will make a bit of sense unless you've read the previous volume -- and preferably the whole trilogy -- so don't even think of starting here.
Well Written Failure.......2006-05-29
I liked so much about this book! I wanted it to be a 5 star review. I can't do it.
It's well written and interesting. The characters matter and their lives matter. It should be five stars but it is not because the story does not support the rest of the excellence.
The story actually begins with a short prolog involving Paksennarion and Duke Phelan, a thousand years or more after the "time" of the story. They are discussing the mysterious fortress found in the DEED OF PAKSENNARION trilogy. From there, the story goes back to the time of Gird. In that sense, it begins before the previous story ends because Gird is still alive. He is not the central character, however. The main guy is Luap, Gird's sometimes trustworthy assistant.
The problem is the distrust between the peasants and the mage born. Luap has found a magic portal to a mysterious palace far in the west and wants to move the mageborn out there to allow them to safely train their powers. In his heart, though, he looks forward to the opportunity to set up an independent fiefdom. The palace he found was actually built by dwarves and elves. They do not use it but are reluctant to let humans in there. They warn of a grave danger but refuse to specify the nature of that danger. Luap moves out there with his people anyway and for a while they are happy but there is a great danger. It is the dark elves who delight in evil. Luap's presence has freed them and they are biding their time to make a bloody mess.
All of this reads well. The suspense is gradually built up along with good characterizations. Where the book falls down is in the climax. The dark elves are on the march and everything is resolved in a few pages with the intervention of Paks and Duke Phelan from the future. Luap gets his comeuppance and they all go about their business.
Its too pat.
Still, the book was worth reading. I just wish it had been worth ending
What a disappointment!.......2004-03-27
I discovered Elizabeth Moon when she wrote Sassinak. I loved the Deed of Paksenarrion and have have mixed (but mostly positive) reactions to the rest of her books. This, though...this was a bitter disappointment.
I love psychological studies. I usually like books with unlikable main characters. But there must be a point to the book. It must GO somewhere or DO something. This book promises and teases, but in the end, there is nothing.
This is a book that needed a fight. This book was desperate for a climax, a turning point, some action. Whether political or physical, this book just flat needed a real conflict, not the mess of never-resolved semi-conflicts with a weak deus ex machina device at the end.
This book needed a story, but it had none. It was too toothless for a tragedy, too wandering for a saga, too diffuse for a character study.
What a disappointment. I can't believe I bought this new. Never again! Elizabeth Moon is going firmly into my "used only" category until I find something of hers to be a lot more enthusiastic about.
Well, I liked it.......2003-10-31
This book is a sort of a history or background of the world as Paksennarion knew it. It may be perhaps a bit dry a times as most histories are. But its a good story.
Painful to Read.......2002-04-04
This novel was so bad that I threw it away after reading it and was furious that I wasted so much time. It dragged throughout the book entire. The story line just was not interesting,

Another great book from Sonya!.......2006-03-07
This is another great book from Sonya! It has helped me understand the animal world much better. Thanks to her book I am now able to better understand my cats and the animals around me. I help my family and friends with their animal problems now. I am very thankful to Sonya for helping me to better understand the world from an animal's point-of-view. I have no doubt that people can communicate with animals telepathically. If you are truly open to the idea, want to communicate with your pets, and have a true love for animals, then you can develop your ability to communicate with animals. Sonya tells in her book about the many animals she has encountered over the years; by telling people of these stories she has opened up the reader to what animals are like and how they perceive us. This book is truly a must for pet owners in order to better understand their animal companions. She tells ways to effectively get through problems that a person might be having with his/her pet and then gives helpful tips to help remedy the situation. The stories she tells apply to every pet owner. In the book, she has covered almost every animal you could possibly have. I recommend this book to anyone who has pets or works with animals. I give it five stars! Sonya truly is a gift from God!
Good Book for all Cats Lover!.......2003-12-29
I really enjoyed this book, it make you understand more how cats think. It a great book for all cats lover.
A good book for cat parents.......2003-10-27
As a cat person who enjoyed Sonja's book "What the Animals Tell Me", I was looking forward to reading this book. I was not disappointed.
In this book, Sonja gives more details about how to communicate with animals and a lot of practical cat care advice. She fills in the gaps left in her life story by the previous book. There are, of course, stories about the cats Sonja has worked with. My favorite is the story of Rosie, a hungry, frightened, pregnant kitty rescued by Sonja's husband, Fitz, who is evidently as much of an animal over as she is. This book would be most appreciated by cat lovers who are open to the possibilities of interspecies communication.

Terrific book!.......2001-03-21
I found this book extremely helpful. I had been looking for information on my cat's behavior problems, specifically litter box avoidance and furniture scratching, and the other books I'd tried either didn't have much information or were poorly organized, making it hard to find the info I needed. However, Communicating With Your Cat was well organized and well written, with lots of helpful information and suggestions on behavior problems. Not only does the author cover how to deal with behavior problems, but goes into a lot of detail about why they occur, so I understood what was happening and why. The book really improved my understanding of how my cat thinks. I could tell the author really cares about cats, and her suggestions worked -- Squeak scratches on her cat tree now and uses her litter box! Lots of other interesting information, too -- I particularly liked the chapters on how to develop a bond with your cat, the origins of cats, and the cat's senses. Lots of great photos and illustrations, too.
The book is a bargain. I give it five stars. Everyone owned by a cat should have this book!
A Must Have for Cat Owners.......2001-03-12
Helgren did a wonderful job of describing the evolution of the cat and how nature selectively created the breed of the domestic cat that is uniquely capable of loving humans just as much as we love them. The book describes cat behavior and teaches us to translate a simple meow into a meaningful sentence that we can use to establish a meaningful relationship with out feline friends. If you have ever wondered why your cats do the things they do, reading this book will explain it. Many color photos and step by step training included.
Customer Reviews:
Clear, Concise and Fun.......2004-04-13
Finally! a book that explores feline health, behavior and feline/human communication with intelligence, sensitivity and humor. I initially purchased the book searching for practical solutions to some behavioral problems we were experiencing with our family cat (they actually worked!) but learned much more about what our cat was trying to tell us in the process. The format makes the material incredibly accessible, and the quality of information makes this book a must-have resource for both the experienced and novice cat owner alike. It also makes a perfect gift for friends welcoming a new cat into their lives.
Fantastic Resource for Cat Caretakers.......2004-04-12
Practical, fun, and perceptive, Janine Adams' contribution to the "How to Say It" books is an invaluable resource for cat lovers everywhere. This book is chock-full of practical advice, invaluable resources and straight-forward descriptions, all in a delightful format. I particularly appreciate Ms. Adams' holistic, positive and caring approach - it is obvious that she loves and understand cats. 4 paws up!
Great Reader- and Cat-Friendly book, full of useful info.......2004-04-12
This book is full of valuable information and advice about understanding your cat. Each complete, yet short chapter covers a different issue or problem, with ideas on what your cat is trying to tell you, how you can best deal with the situation, and what problems and pitfalls to avoid.
There are more than 50 chapters to help you understand just about anything you might face with your cat. From litter box problems, to grooming, to hairballs, it's all covered! Adams offers great insights and a variety of options to solve problems and prevent them in the first place. Her advice is cat-friendly and helps you strengthen the bond with your favorite feline.
I've had cats my whole life, and this book is my new favorite resource when I have a question or concern about my two current cats. It's also a great book for the person new to cats. I have two copies -- one to loan out, and one to have on hand when I have a question myself.
An insult to anyone's intelligence.......2004-03-20
Not content to put words in cat's mouths, pet psychic-style, she introduces the lunacy of Bach flower remedies and the nonsense of Tellington Touch (what you and I call "petting) to compound a worthless book.
"How to Talk to Your Cat" by Jean Craighead George is more reliable. Or even Roger Caras' "A Cat is Watching"
If you want reliable information in this format try "100 Questions Your Cat Would Ask Its Vet" by Bruce Fogle.

Haeger Potteries through the Years
ASIN: 0764300563 |
Book Description
The industrial pottery at Abingdon, Illinois, made artware from 1934 to 1950 before returning to its mainstay, plum-bingware or sanitary-ware, as it was called at "The Pottery." Yankee ingenuity was used to cope with the Great Depression when managers came up with the idea of making artware using their usual "industrial strength" materials and processes. This decision resulted in artware with unusually strong bodies and glazes. For the veteran collector of Abingdon Pottery as well as the novice, this is an Encyclopedia of Shapes, a Dictionary of Colors, a Holy Grail of Collecting, richly illustrated in over 700 photographs and painstakingly researched. It also has a detailed value guide according to mold number and mold type.

Abingdon Pottery.......2003-06-29
This book is fantastic! The information is very helpful and the pictures are some of the best I have seen in any collectors book! This book has given me the knowledge to amass a 600+ piece of Abingdon Pottery!
(P.S. Joe and Joyce Paradis have also written a book about the early days of Haeger Pottery that is equally as good as the Abingdon Book! I highly recommed both books!)
A must have for a pottery collector's library!.......2002-02-13
As an avid pottery collector, I have an ever growing collection of Pottery Collector's Guides. Abingdon Pottery Artware is one I refer to over and over again. Clear pictures of marks, stamps, labels and bottoms and an extensive price guide organized by mold number and alphabetized by mold type making identification a snap. This guide is filled with color pictures that I have found to be true to life glaze colors, each picture also includes mold numbers and production dates. One of my top 3 favorite collector's guides!
Abingdon Unveiled.......2000-02-28
Abingdon pottery is one of the hidden treasures of the Midwest that Joe Paradis has now shared with the rest of the world. I found the book after I had acquired a few pieces. It explains the unique quality of the product, such as the weight and the gloss. Paradis includes cross-referenced lists by item name and stock number. It is very comprehensive, readable, and the photography is excellent.
The Ultimate Guide to Abingdon Pottery........1998-06-19
Abingdon Pottery has been a little know piece of Americana until Joe Paradis and his outstanding book came along. Paradis covers the history of the pottery works, from the days of sanitary fixture making to the Depression when Art Pottery was made. Also discussed are the unique features of the actual pottery with excellent illustrations and interviews with the surviving members of the Depression Era staff. This book is a must for both collectors of Abingdon Pottery and those interested in American pottery in general.

“Like other titles in this series, Davis’s work concentrates on enjoyable projects that can be completed successfully in a short period of time. Socks, hats, mittens, and vests —all are represented here by patterns that feature good-quality yarns in natural fibers and do not sacrifice quality for quickness. Highly recommended.”—Library Journal.

Nice Designs, Inadequate Instructions.......2007-05-26
I'm in the middle of crocheting the Classic Vest, p. 49. Like another reviewer, at first I couldn't even get started. I have had help from an instructor at my local craft store (she took the pattern home and finally figured out how to start). There is nothing to let me know if I'm working correctly - the number of stitches at the end of the rows would be helpful. I don't think the designs are dowdy - I was looking for designs that were tailored and not "cute." There are several other projects in the book that I want to try if I finally make it through this one.
Not dowdy to me BUT .............2005-07-16
I am currently trying to make the vest with the mandarin collar. I have 30+ years of crocheting experience and am 42. I personally think the instructions to the vest are lacking. Most instructions tell you what you are to do then give a bit of a recap of the count at the end. (ie. Sc in each chain one space then say 50 sc total) If you accidentally skip a stitch or misunderstood the directions with most directions you can count or figure it out by something else mentioned. With this pattern, if you make a mistake or misunderstand, you won't know. I figure I must have made a mistake somewhere but can't find out where.
inspirational.......2005-05-23
This book is probably better suited for more experienced crocheters as there are some stitches mentioned that son't seem to appear anyplace else. I do like this book to use as a starting point to go somewhere else with it. I ended up making my first "Mile A Minute" afghan based on a pattern that's in the book. No, the pattern wasn't for an afghan, but was easily adapted for it.
I recommend this book for more experienced crocheters.
difficult to follow.......2005-03-10
I tried to follow directions for the vest on page 49 from this book and could not get past row 2. The directions were very unclear. I asked my mother to try it, and she had the same problem. Between us, we have 45 years of crochet experience, so either this book was not edited for accuracy or the writer cannot write concise directions.
As for an earlier reviewer's comment that some items were "dowdy", I would recommend looking past the author's choice of yarn (lots of earth tones) to the bones and design of the garment. With different yarn (and clearer directions!) they might make attractive garments.
It's dull.......2003-12-27
It's an okay book, but the designs are really dull and old-fashioned. I was always more of a knitter and found this book to discourage me from branching out to crocheting.

Book Description
In This Is Not It, Lynne Tillman's collection of 20 years' worth of important and compelling short stories and novellas, the protagonists seduce you into their lives and thoughts. Engaging, funny, elegant, and ironic, Tillman takes the reader to new heights of wit and meaning through staccato phrases, grammatical twists, and sensuous language. Familiar worlds of honesty, deceit, dark humor, pleasure, pain, confusion, dependence, love, and lust each play decisive roles in her believable fictions. In "Come and Go," three characters and an author collide. In "Pleasure Isn't A Pretty Picture," the reader is treated to a he/she meditation on the one-night stand. And "Dead Sleep" is truly an insomniac's worst nightmare. A twin act on a double bill, This Is Not It is a collection of innovative and stand-alone writing that also engages and matches wits with the some of the best contemporary art: work by Kiki Smith, Jane Dickson, Jessica Stockholder, Diller & Scofidio, Laura Letinsky, Peter Dreher, Roni Horn, Stephen Ellis, Juan Munoz, Vik Muniz, Silvia Kolbowski, Jeff Koons, James Welling, Aura Rosenberg, Barbara Ess, Barbara Kruger, Dolores Marat, Haim Steinbach, Gary Schneider, Marco Breuer, Stephen Prina, and Linder Sterling. Since 1982, acclaimed novelist Tillman has created these unique narratives that are a parallel universe to the contemporary art world. Maybe they're analogues or dialogues, maybe fictions inspired by art, maybe reflections, or meditations--but whatever they're called, like Borges's fictions, they are their own worlds, too. Tillman has marked out terrain of her own, which this collection celebrates. Full of life and art, This Is Not It is illuminating, bold, subtle, and riotous.

Joyride.......2003-04-12
...through a unique vision of the world we're struggling to be in - through the alternation of worlds. A glimpse into the nature of things, situation, and people. Precise sentiments. Bold language. Innovative forms. Rewarding for young writers and readers who enjoy variety in literature. Leave this book alone though if you're used to more traditional stuff - not that everyone would like Lynne Tillman.

Book Description
Perhaps the most important artist in the history of Italian graphic design, Armando Testa has explored the most diverse languages of visual communication for over a half-century, inventing new ways of expressing ideas, and designing enormously innovative works for television. Armando Testa documents Testa's activity from the beginning of his career to his last works, collecting many of his most important pieces--advertising posters, sketches, book illustrations and covers from the 40s and 50s; photographic work for advertising from the 70s; posters and trademarks created for social causes and cultural events during the 80s; and work done outside of the field of advertising and publicity, for Testa's own creative purposes, from the 80s right up to his death. This attractive and exciting new monograph also includes a detailed biography and bibliography as well as an "imography": a catalogue, with commentary, of every one of Testa's amazing images.

Book Description
Haim Steinbach's work with language proposes that reading is an act of seeing; the graphic codes which proliferate in our current media culture accustom us to the fact of word and image arriving in one package. For Steinbach, reproducing a phrase or a symbol represents the action of memorization and preservation, thereby inviting viewers to identify and re-identify with the language and image before them. Thus, for this latest addition to the illy Collection series of espresso cups, Steinbach inscribes the letters "n," "o" and "n"--or the word "non"--together with the figure "8"--or infinity--as signs of an abstract language. Since 1992, famed Italian coffeemaker illycaffa has been commissioning limited-edition coffee cup designs from internationally renowned and emerging artists, musicians, and filmmakers. The story of the cup begins in 1990 with architect and engineer Matteo Thun, who designed a white espresso cup to the exacting specifications of the Illy family. The volume and diameter had to be just so, the rim had to accept resting lips in a most practical manner and the all-important bowl at the bottom of the cup had to conserve heat effectively. Once the prototype was approved, the family set about having it transformed with original work by the likes of Sandro Chia, Nam June Paik, James Rosenquist, Robert Rauschenberg, David Byrne, Francis Ford Coppola, Joseph Kosuth, Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Michel Comte, Jannis Kounellis, and Louise Bourgeois.

Book Description
Along with Robert Gober and Jeff Koons, New York-based Haim Steinbach is one of the most renowned exponents of the late 70s art movement which endeavored to revamp the post-Duchamp tradition of ready-mades in the face of a rising wave of neo-expressionism. Steinbach has become known for his "thing altars," carefully manufactured shelves containing borrowed or purchased objects that take on new meaning in the context of their surroundings, recalling Robert Smithson's notions of "site" and "non-site." This new book in the Cantz Series documents a Berlin-specific installation by the artist. Steinbach, born to German-Jewish parents in Israel, stayed in the former East Germany for the first time, visiting families all over Berlin and borrowing individual objects or arrangements which he then transferred to an art space. In doing so the artist became the curator of a sort of group exhibition of "collected collections" which interact in surprising ways in their new space.

Book Description
Everyone has an opinion about Mumia Abu-Jamal. Have an informed opinion. Read his story.
Mumia Abu-Jamal is one of the most controversial icons of our time. He has become the face of the death penalty, and of America's failure to address fundamental issues of race, justice, and dissent. Yet despite years of widespread demonstrations calling for his freedom, few people really know who Mumia was before he became a death row "celebrity."
Most people know Mumia through his books Live from Death Row (1995), Death Blossoms (1996), and All Things Censored (2000), which cemented his reputation as a "voice of the voiceless." In On A Move: The Story of Mumia Abu-Jamal, award-winning author Terry Bisson brings to life the man behind that voice. Now, for the first time, you can meet Mumia as student, radical, lover, father, and reporter. Covering a childhood in Philadelphia's projects, a turbulent youth in the Black Panther Party, a promising career in radio journalism, and a fateful sidewalk altercation that changed everything, Bisson's colorful sketches tell the story of one of the stormiest periods in American history, and of a young rebel who came of age in its crucible.
A long-time friend of his subject, Bisson makes no attempt at an exhaustive account. On A Move will tell you how Mumia became the figurehead he is today, and why almost every progressive organization in the world has called for his freedom or at least a new trial. However, it does not dwell on the contradictory details of his conviction. Instead, in a readable style aimed at a broad audience, Bisson fleshes out the complexities and warmth of a man constantly dehumanized and reduced to two dimensions, both by those who want to see him dead, and by his supporters' tendency to make him a poster-perfect "cause."
Mumia's story raises fundamental questions about our commitment to freedom of speech, while the political climate of his trial casts serious doubt on whether a reporter famous for exposing police abuse could find justice in an openly hostile court. But whatever one's views on freedom of speech, racial discrimination, capital punishment, or even Mumia's guilt or innocence, this book will give you a vital understanding of a man and a movement that have already left their mark on history.
Customer Reviews:
Gripping reading.......2002-12-29
This book is very interestingly written. It's not exactly "street prose" as one reviewer put it, but just shockingly to the point. The writer says in one sentence what most would take paragraphs to convey. It doesn't seem to matter to the writer whether he is writing in first/second person etc, he just conveys his message - beautifully.
Whether you believe in Mumia's innocence or not, this book is a good start to look into the complicated issue. For those reviewers who don't even review the book and simply blast Mumia or his followers, you have missed the point. I personally believe in Mumia's innocence and the system's failure to give him a fair trial (I'm a law studend and have read his trial transcripts, the opinions, etc). But that isn't the point. This is a good book, thoroughly gripping - I read it in 5 hours or so.
Only Fudges Some Major Facts.......2002-10-24
This book is interestingly written in 'street' prose, with certain lines and bits emphasized and then re-emphasized to hit home. This story will help a reader looking to find a first hand perspective into the Black Panther movement of the sixties and into the Philadelphia police nightmare of the seventies. As long as you approach this book knowing that Mumia is NOT a political prisoner (he is a murderer) and was NEVER silenced for writing the truth (he spread vicious libel throughout his career as a journalist), and you look into those facts for yourself, then this book can be for you what it is for me... a dishonest biography of a man set against an honest background of the turbulant and nightmarish time for African- Americans in the years following the Civil Rights Movement.
WHAT ELSE IS NEW.......2002-10-08
Civil Disobedience is one thing and murder quite another. It is obvious since the days of Martin Luther King and Tolerence of the 60s that all sub-culture groups jump on the same ole band wagon of," It's not my fault." Blame the goverment. Point the finger at racism or an abused childhood. Fact is," Murder is murder!" Whether one is able to manipulate masses of naive believers is a good tool for digging out of prison, but the truth is," What else is new?"
Call the Sanitation Department.......2002-06-26
This book is a predictable re-hash of the laughable attempts to free a cop killer and an attempt to turn him into some kind of noble, cudly revolutionary. Jamal shot and killed a Philadelphia police officer in 1981. Jamal has since become a cause celeb for a quite amazing amalgamation of leftists, including the Euro-trash left, anti-death penalty activists, black nationalists, anarchists, the Amnesty Int'l crowd, and your standard Ed Asner wacko-lefty Hollywood crowd. This book is an apologetic for Jamal, your time could be better spent reading the trial transcripts from his trial in 1982. Jamal's attorneys, which alternate from year to year, have abused the criminal justice system for 15 years with one story after another of fantastic conspiracies (which are always different) and new and exciting social degenerates as the stars.
Save your money. Watch your tv news for the next Economic Summit. The collection of trash that are rioting in the streets about that Summit are the same mob that will show up at a Jamal rally, they just bring different signs, and a different form of a "hey hey ho ho" chant. Take a good look at the cover of this book, that is what evil looks like...
AMAZING!.......2001-10-20
This book is written in a way that you can;t put it down. It takes only a few hours to read the whole book. A wonderful must-read about a great revolutionary
