Horrible Is Excellent.......2007-07-04
Typhoon Lover did exactly what I was hoping it wouldn't do and that made it a wonderful read, even if I felt anxious the whole time for the heroine. Her own sorry actions plus the problems thrown her way made it one of the best in the series. The future is uncertain, but interesting for Rei and I'm looking forward to reading Girl in a Box. Rei is one of the best characters I've come across in reading. She's so real. She makes mistakes, she has bad judgment, brilliant insights and a propensity to get in deeper than perhaps she should, but always landing on her feet...sort of.
The Typhoon Lover.......2007-01-05
While not the best of the best, this mystery is well written, and as usual, filled with wonderful details about Japanese life. I would recommend it, with the caution that reading the previous books in the series makes it more interesting as Rei's relationships move forward in this book.
Novel filled with all the right elements.......2006-08-07
I loved it! Sujata Massey is my new favorite author! I read this book from cover to cover in one afternoon. There is a possible murder-suicide, a love story, scandals, and intrigue. It reads like a spy story.
I skipped over the sex scenes; they were really unnecessary and didn't add to the story. My dad read this book, and decided that it is written for the younger generation. I think that explains the one and only rotten review for this book.
Not as good as the others.......2006-07-28
I really enjoy reading Sujata Massey's books. I think Rei Shimura's adventures are a thrill and I usually can't put the book down untill I'm finished with it. But this time has been diferent, I don't know why but it's been a little boring and maybe too short, I have the feeling that nothing happened and at the end Rei ends up alone for no reason.
I hope the next one is better, although I know that having the pressure of writing so many books and wanting them to be as good as the others has to be difficult to bear with, so I just want to encourage Sujata to keep writing Rei's adventures.
Liked but didn't love this latest in the Rei Shimura series..........2006-05-15
As always, Massey does a wonderful job of weaving in cultural details to her mystery story and when I finished Typhoon Lover I found myself eager to read the next book in the series because I love Massey's writing style and the world she shares through this series and didn't want my time in Rei's world to be over. That said, I didn't like the development of Rei and Hugh in this book--among other things, Rei is supposed to be 30 years old and her interpersonal instincts with Hugh can be so incredibly lacking, especially for a woman astute enough to navigate international sleuthing and the nuances of a second culture; moreover, she is often so insightful and astute in reading people. But so it goes. Still, Massey's novels are rich reads and this book had me riveted, albeit frustrated at times.

Book Description
"Sleep, my baby," she whispered with a smile, "sleep through the night...all will be well...all will be right." Racial tension grips Westcreek, Minnesota. Sparked by the murders of four white men on reservation land, the tension is flared by the little town's depression, isolation, and intolerance. An ensuing investigation by a hapless sheriff and a rogue deputy leads to the "accidental" death of an Indian elder. But this is no mere Indian elder: Decoreous Blackfoot is a guardian-the last true chief of the Ojibwe First Nation, charged with watching over a forest full of splendid and unusual life. His grandson would witness his demise. Suddenly alone and enraged, this most unlikely little Indian ascends a throne of spiritual power and magic. Out for revenge, he unleashes a blazing war upon little Westcreek, his army a gathering of macabre soldiers. Only in death, however, does he find wanted peace. The Guardian Hills Saga underscores the belief that no one truly wins in a racial war. Or do they?

I could'nt put it down !.......2005-07-09
This book is bound to become a classic in the fanasy adventure realm. A well written, page-turner. A story of magic and mystery that will pull you in without letting you go. I eagerly await the books to follow!
Great Story and Great Characters.......2005-04-07
I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book. I read it from cover to cover and loved it! Being from Minnesota, it was great to see a story set in my backyard. Mark-John Schmitz writes a spell-binding story with lots of action, mystery, and suspense. The characters are all unique and memorable. The story builds and builds towards a cool climax-- then the twist hits you. I also liked the overall social message that basically sets us all straight. My only complaint is that it was too short-- I hope this becomes a series. I can definitely see this story someday on the big screen.

Someone had stolen his body -.......2005-10-19
This is from the back of my copy of the book. "
Someone had stolen his body - and thereby hangs the tale...
Ismael Forth woke up to find he was dead - killed on a remote planet, the report was. His personality recording predating his death was now implanted in a new body.
But Forth knew he would never have traveled in space ... that the report was a lie - and he learned that his body had been stolen for a highly profitable, highly illegal mind implant.
Companioned by Candy Darling, a Federation agent whose eleven-year-old body housed an intelligence seven times that age, he set out to track down his old body - for the new form that now housed Ismael Forth once belonged to an attractive woman - with an elegant, if rather inconvenient, tail...
"
----
The title refers to transplant rejection. Will Ismael Forth's "self" reject the body that it is now housed in?

Theodicy that Must Ultimately Fail.......2006-05-14
There is much good and to commend here but I have some problems with the theology and doctrinal approach.
First, it seems that books of this nature, call them Christian "self-help" books, seem to have adopted a predictable formula. The author chooses a theme, chooses examples from his ministry, and then draws parallels from Biblical narratives tying the two into a neat package that supports the point in question. This is becoming a tiresome formula and it fails at several levels.
First, the examples chosen from the ministry, the so-called real life examples, often are adapted or telescoped to fit alongside a Biblical narrative. Our lives are not those of the Biblical characters although we may face many of the same spiritual trials. Secondly, the main emphasis of the ministerial example centers around worldly things and makes the focus of the problem the selfish "I" rather than "God." Third, the outcome is usually justified by the author in terms of worldly success rather than spiritual success. The latter is noted as important but rarely or never seems to be separated from the former. The book seems to be permeated with this subliminal notion that God is the answer to your worldly as well as spiritual problems and things will work out good for you in this world if you accept God and His ways. Although this is true, the definition of "work out good for you in this world" is in terms of the "I" or "me" and not in terms if "God" to whom we are called to submit. Where there are examples of unsolved disappointment, the author associates it with a failure to follow the program. God's justice is not quid pro quo and accepting God, truly accepting God means accepting the burden of the cross and not the expectation of rewards in this life.
The last error is the most dangerous. J. C. Ryle once wrote that before one accepts Christ he or she should count the cost. The cost was God's vicarious sacrifice of making The Son sin and crucifying Him on the Cross. To be a true follower of Jesus we are warned in scripture that we must crucify the old man, be prepared to give up all worldly things WITHOUT and assurance other than our daily bread and the joy of God's care, fellowship and love. The true fact is that for most Christians in the world, accepting Christ means danger, sacrifice, hatred, discrimination, isolation, poverty, suffering and sometimes a violent death. Books such as this discuss suffering in terms of exchanging one career for another, discovering God given gifts and overcoming illness and disability or hurts. But these worldly successes, though given of the Lord, are possible because we live in a wealthy country where people have choices and opportunities and can overcome life's obstacles praise the Lord.
Any theology of Theodicy, the basic theological subject of such works, must be universal and apply to everyone, everywhere and at all times. What would the vignettes in a book such as this mean to the people who life in the garbage dumps of Mexico City and survive off the rotten trash of others? It does not hold! Yet, they worship the same immutable God whose ways are constant and perfect. The theology of books such as these are tailored to the "me" generation of Americans and not to the greater brotherhood of God's people. The person who lives in the garbage dumps of Mexico City has no realistic hope of escaping the daily grueling suffering that is their worldly lot. Yet, when such a one accepts Jesus, his worldly lot may not change but his spiritual lot has radically changed. What great saints are those that suffer in poverty and can truly claim that their only portion is the Lord!
This is the joy and transformation that scripture talks about. The cross is not something to be dressed up and made pretty. It is an instrument of relentless pain, torture and death. We are all asked to pick up our own cross and follow the Lord. That means we are asked to voluntarily crucify our old selves, and the things we hold dear, unmercifully, totally and to the death. It is a painful thing to do.
Theology such as that offered here devalues and invalidates individual pain suffering and failure in the world. It ignores the countless millions who never succeed in this life yet are rewarded in the hereafter. It ignores the fact that there are many among us that are chosen to suffer till death for no other reason that we may present an opportunity for people to do good works and be divided into sheep and goats. God's people suffer, hurt and may not see any relief in this world. But in His mercy, God sends His Spirit, ministering angels and the Church.
The suffering of Theodicy is something that must be embraced. The sufferer's pain must be acknowledged and validated. It must be understood that most of the Christians on the world experience this suffering and misery. It is the cost of discipleship.
Books such as these offer rewards without counting the cost. The theology they expound ultimately fails. When this failure is realized, true harm is done.
Finally, almost every such book uses the Jacob-Esau story as an example of Jacob's spiritual formation by surrendering his will to God. While there is much good here, most err in failing to realize that the blessing of Isaac the Blind was a worldly blessing. The Promise, God's blessing, was not Isaac's to give. Jacob fooled the wrong father. And as Jacob's spiritual eyes are opened at Peniel, he begins to be called Israel. Yet Jacob never truly fully matures to Israel and crucifies his old self. Some of Jacob remains in the final chapter of Genesis and in his decedents and in us. Commentators and such writers focus on the worldly comforts surrounding Jacob in his old age as evidence of his total transformation. If this was the case than the Bible would be one chapter and the Cross unnecessary.
It is my prayer that the authors will accept my thoughts in the CHristian Spirit of love with which they were offered
Finally a book that is real.......2004-11-17
When Life Doesn't Turn Out the Way You Expect met me in the middle of extreme turmoil in my life. And the authors seem to understand what that feels like. No platitudes. No cliches. Just real words with real meaning that get to the heart of our disappointment, disillusionment and discouragement. I highly recommend this book for those who are frustrated with the life they're leading...sounds like most of us!
Resources for the Hurting.......2004-02-03
When Life Doesn't Turn Out the Way You Expect by Jerry Brecheisen & Lawrence W. Wilson gives real life and biblical illustrations of individuals that have found forgiveness and healing when life circumstances didn't turn out the way they had anticipated. The authors have done a great job in providing help and resources for those who are suffering from loss, abuse, rejection, failure, betrayal, pain, disability, and disappointment. I highly recommend this book.

Nicely informative, Poorly organized, Recipes aren't great.......2007-07-06
Preface: I am a novice sauce maker:
I read the chapters covering history, stock, and the mother sauces. I enjoyed the history and the basics covered on the mother sauces and stock were covered in a satisfactory manner.
My first indication that I didn't like the book was the recipe for veloute. It wasn't until after a few batches of experimenting that i managed to get a reasonable roux going. Also, some things like final liasons and glaces aren't covered too much. In fact a lot of things are mentioned but never discussed in depth.
Some of the recipes are great though, and there are a ton of them.
Try something else before this book.
A great guide for sauces.......2007-05-13
There are many more sauces than I ever imagined in this book. My husband and I have had a great time choosing an appropriate sauce for whatever meal we are planning. The key is to have a good mother sauce to start with and then you will have a succesful small sauce.
Excellent Professional text and reference. Buy it if you make sauces!.......2006-05-03
`The Sauce Bible' by culinary educator, David Paul Larousse is one of those very few books you find which are specifically written for culinary professional. The first clue is the high list price of $54.95. The second is that textbook specialist, John Wiley and Sons publish it. The third is the fact that the book began as an essay on sauce painting, which the average foodie will admire, but, to my knowledge, will virtually never try to reproduce. The fourth clue is that the quantities for many of the recipes are a lot larger than one would need for a dish for four or six. The fifth clue is the large amount of narrative and graphics devoted to explaining the relationships between members of the various sauce families, based on the famous French `mother sauces'.
That is not to say the average cooking enthusiast couldn't get something from this book. The biggest question is whether this book is better than the standard modern work in English, James Peterson's `Sauces'. The very first comparison I did was on the two books' treatments of `beurre blanc' or white butter sauce commonly used for fish and often used as an exemplar of `nouvelle cuisine' cooking, although the recipe is much older than the 1970's. I think the treatment of this by the two different books is a good indication of the books' relative strengths and weaknesses. While Larousse has, by a very rough count, 480 recipes to Peterson's 350, Peterson gives more details on the techniques used for each individual recipe, while Larousse spends more time on general material. Peterson's recipe, with introduction and variations, takes up over three pages, including tips on saving the sauce for later use. Larousse' recipe for basic `beurre blanc' takes about half a page, although later recipes such as Bercy and Chambertin are variations. Oddly, Peterson includes in the basic recipe a step to strain the solids, primarily the shallot, out of the final product, while Larousse give no such instruction until we get to the recipe for the Chambertin sauce.
So, for the amateur chef, Peterson may really be the better book, since he is more detailed in his recipes for very common sauces, even if he is a bit fussy for the amateur. But, I really think that a dedicated foodie will want both books. While Peterson is probably the better quick reference, Larousse is better in understanding the relations between all members of the sauce families. And, he certainly covers more different classically named sauces. Peterson, for example, gives no mention or recipe for Chambertin sauce, at least it is neither in his list of recipes or in his index. And, you will certainly want Larousse if you wish to understand sauce painting the way they do it a fancy restaurants and on the `Iron Chef America'.
I have seen at least two less expensive trade paperback books on sauces and while I believe both are decent, I strongly recommend one of these two books for the dedicated foodie in preference to a shorter book. I am especially respectful of Larousse's tutorial on the making of stocks. His recipes and techniques are certainly useable by the home cook, although they would meet no one's notion of quick cooking, as the longer ones take from eight to twelve hours for optimum results. The only thing I missed in this volume was the concept so artfully stated by Deborah Madison where she proclaims that stocks should be crafted to meet their specific uses.
Highly recommended for the professional and the dedicated foodie.
extremely inaccurate and ill-researched.......2005-01-17
I was given this book as a gift, and as a professional chef in Washington, DC, I was very disappointed. The inaccuracies and bumbling research do not warrant a reader's funds nor time. In my opinion, this book is useless to both professional and pedestrian cooks.
Inaccurate Facts.......2004-04-17
Everyone's heard the old adage about "where there's smoke, there's fire". If I discover inaccuracies in a text that I know are inaccurate, it makes me wonder how much of what is stated in the text about matters I don't know about is accurate!
Example 1: He states that a peppercorn when ripe is pink, and that is soaked in water to remove the pink shell to reveal the white peppercorn. This is not true. The "pink peppercorn" is not related to black pepper at all. (Ref: The Professional Chef, 5th Edition)
Example 2: He states that tomatoes were introduced into Italy in the 1600's. I had always heard that it was Thomas Jefferson who ate tomatoes when no one else would because tomatoes are related to the Deadly Nightshade (Belladonna) family and were generally thought toxic. Jefferson introduced them to the Italian Ambassador who brought them back to Italy in the 1700's.
Example 3: He gives a recipe for Chutney sauce which requires Mango Chutney as an ingredient. However, there is no Mango Chutney recipe in the book that I could find!
OK, Example 3 is an omission rather than an inaccuracy, and yes, I'm not positive which story in Example 2 is historically correct. But Example 1 alone would cause me to be skeptical, because it is so widely known that pink peppercorns are not a member of the black pepper family. Actually, white pepper is inside black pepper, and breaking off the outer shell reveals the white peppercorn. Green peppercorns are merely just that: green when they're ripe.
Also one recipe, I forgot which one, called for 1 Basil, and left out the unit of measure.
Haven't tried any of the recipes, but just reading through some of them, they appear to be fairly sound. The proof will be in the tasting.

Great Book for the Aquarist or Diver!.......2004-06-09
Scott Michael continues his Reef Fishes series with this excellent book. The gorgeous photographs allow easy identification, often including multiple photos for color variations due to location, sex, etc. It also includes information on maximum length, distribution, and biology useful to both divers and aquarists, as well as captive care and aquarium suitability ratings. This volume along with the others in the series are a must have for any serious marine aquarist, as well as any diver interested in ID'ing and learning about coral reef fishes. Highly recommended!
By the way, the initial Amazon pricing on this book is erroneously high. I have this information directly from the publisher, so you may want to wait for it to be corrected before purchasing.

Finally!.......2000-01-17
"Chase Complete" more than lives up to its title; it is a comprehensive reference for the Chase collector and for anyone interested in the consumer products manufactured by Chase Brass in the 1930's and early 1940's. It is a meticulously researched book, richly illustrated by professional photographs of almost uniformly top quality examples. It is well written with wit and humor. No self-serving author-collector rhetoric here. Five stars for sure!
HUGE BENEFIT TO COLLECTORS.......1999-12-17
EXCELLANT! THE most comprehensive and thoroughly researched book on the Chase Brass & Copper Company available. Wonderful information on the history of the company and the industrial designers responsible for the innovative & modern designs. Also included are reproductions of original Chase sales brochures and the retail sales sites. High quality photography along with detailed identifications make this book extremely helpful to collectors. Looking forward to seeing the follow up book on Chase lamps.
Great Book.......1999-10-28
As a collector of Art Deco, I really enjoyed this book. Very good photogaphy and very well written. The author did a lot of homework in preparing this. A great book for Art Deco collectors.
A must for any Chase collector........1999-10-21
We had the pleasure of working just a little bit with the author, Donald Johnson, and author/photographer, Leslie Pina, on this book. Countless hours of work on their part show in the beautiful photos and creative writing in this book. This is the most comprehensive guide to Chase that has ever been put together for all Chase collecors, from novice to advanced. Well done!! Postscript: Be on the lookout for Donald and Leslies follow up companion book on Chase lamps, coming soon.
Chase Compete Lives Up To Its Title.......1999-10-20
As a Chase collector, my hat's off to authors Donald-Brian Johnson and Leslie Pina. This book is not only comprehensive, but the photos are outstanding. Leslie Pina (photography) has done another superb job of bringing inanimate objects to life... they literally jump right off the pages! And, just like in his prior book "Higgins Adventures In Glass", Donald-Brian Johnson (text) has made learning about Chase a rewarding and fascinating experience. Mr. Johnson's writing style holds your interest as it informs. I was also gratified to read in the introduction that another book by Johnson and Pina devoted entirely to Chase lamps is coming soon. At last, collectors will have access to two comprehensive and informative Chase resources. If you're a Chase collector, or just interested in learning more about the Chase Brass & Copper Company and its deco specialties, I highly recommend Chase Complete!

Book needs more color photographs.......2007-07-26
As a person who pieces quilts and does beadwork, I usually see an actual quilt or a piece of beadwork OR a color photograph of an item. After viewing an actual item or a photo and appreciating the colors and the pattern, I then decide if I want to make it. While this book has 50 charts for bead weaving and 21 patterns for applique, there are only four pages of photographs showing a total of about 26 items. I was dissappointed that there wasn't a color photo for every design in the book. People want to see what a finished product will look life before taking the time and effort to make it.
Beadwork Designs.......2005-08-03
This is a great book to use for applique designs. I craft and bead cradleboards and the designs really helped towards my ideas. The designs vary in region which also helps. The designs are large, simple to use and she even numbers them for the specific colors to use if you choose. I am very satifsfied with Stanley-Miller's book.
Great Patterns!.......2000-06-14
While there are 50 charts and 21 patterns for applique, Pamela has only 2 pages that tell you "how to do it." But, the applique patterns alone are worth the price of the book. All Patterns are black and white and color suggestions are given. There are brief descriptions given for loom beading and 2 needle applique.

Excellent reprint..........2000-06-24
This is a reprint from the early 1900's and while some of the termonology is antiquated the ideas and techniques are timeless. A valuable addition to any beader's library, I highly recommend this little volume to any beader who feels they are another bead in an endless necklace from the beginning of time to forever.

Customer Reviews:
One Man's Courage.......2006-01-26
As I read this book, I found myself being drawn totally into the world of this courageous man. Without pulling any punches Lee G. Edwards brings to the reader in the most raw and detailed illustration his experience growing up as a black male with albinism in an unjust society. He brings you face to face to what it is like to not only experience racial prejudice but also what it is like to be ostracized by your own race. Once you have read this book you will witness how Lee G. Edwards overcame the most extreme social and personal adversities and at the same time reached back to others with albinism, so they will not have to experience the same suffering.
A very educational account...A "must read!".......2003-12-05
This book meant a lot to me as an African with albinism because its an uncensored outpour of real emotions and real feelings unglilded by common dillusions that most persons living with albinism have learned to live without. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the sociological study of race and race relations as well as a better understanding of the lives of Africans with albinism. It leaves the reader to challenge the racial "norms" of society because its neither an account of pessimism nor optimism but a tale of what was, and is on-going in society.
An incredible expression of life.......2002-09-29
This book expresses the true emotion, true challenges, and compelling life experiences of Lee G. Edwards. It gives a very real and powerful illustration of what it's like to go through life constantly faced with social and personal challenges. This book raises the awareness of albinism and has something everyone can identify with. Lee makes himself very transparent and beause of this raw vulnerability, anyone reading this book will be touched and take a peice of Lee's experiences with them.
A Real Eye Opener.......2002-02-25
A compelling read!!! With our national debate on race dominated by "black and white" issues, this book is a real eye opener. It provides an entirely new take on prejudice and discrimination in America today.
Imagine being forced to exist in a never-never world where you have no race to call your own, a world in which you are not only subjected to white discrimination, but those in your own community--including your own father--cannot accept you because you are not black enough. I have never read a stronger indictment of the insanity of racism. Mr. Edwards writes passionately, with raw honesty, generously offering his own trauma and recovery to give others hope A must read for anyone who says they care about social justice.
TRULY INSPIRATIONAL.......2002-01-13
READING THIS BOOK WAS AN ISPIRATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE! I WOULD SUGGEST THAT EVERYONE READ THIS BOOK. IT SHOWS HOW WE AS A NATION ARE SO JUDEMENTAL WHEN SOMETHING DOES NOT LOOK RIGHT TO US. IT ALSO SHOWS HOW A PERSON CAN BE SO GRAVELY EFFECTED BY THE IGNORANCE OF OTHERS. I THINK WE SHOULD ALL REMEMBER THIS COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN OUR CHILD. AND HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOUR CHILD WAS TREATED ON DAY TO DAY BASIS AS THIS YOUNG MAN HAS BEEN AND STILL IS TREATED? IT IS TRULY FOOD FOR THOUGHT. AND STILL WITH ALL THAT HAS HAPPENED TO HIM, HE STILL HAS A POSITIVE AND OUTGOING ATTITUDE AND WISHES TO EDUCATE OTHERS SO CHILDREN DO NOT HAVE TO SUFFER LIKE HE HAS BEEN MADE TO. THAT IS WHY I AM GIVING THIS AUTHOR FIVE STARS HE TRULY DESERVES IT AND HIS WRITING SKILLS ARE OUTSTANDING!
