Book Description
Third in the Kurt Wallander series.
The execution-style murder of a Swedish housewife looks like a simple case even though there is no obvious suspect. But then Wallander learns of a determined stalker, and soon enough, the cops catch up with him. But when his alibi turns out to be airtight, they realize that what seemed a simple crime of passion is actually far more complex—and dangerous. The search for the truth behind the killing eventually uncovers an assassination plot, and Wallander soon finds himself in a tangle with both the secret police and a ruthless foreign agent. Combining compelling insights into the sinister side of modern life with a riveting tale of international intrigue,
The White Lioness keeps you on the knife-edge of suspense.

Good then bad then good.......2007-04-01
I liked this book from the start to somewhere around page 250 or 260. But I thought it faltered pretty badly for a hundred pages or so. Fellow police are shocked that a man just seconds from a gun battle for his life is in a frantic frame of mind. Really? A man he's chasing seems to, inexplicably, feel that it's important to get Wallander. Why? Reasons are purported but they seemed very false. It helped the story along but it was faintly ridiculous. There was a little too much sentimentality in stereotypically expected ways.
I Mostly Liked It, Some Will Not: It Is a Solid Wallander Story and a Compelling Read, But Fragmented........2007-02-19
I thank fellow reviewer Leonard Fleisig for bringing this author to my attention. The writing is superb. I have purchased and read six of the Wallander novels. The present novel is average in that series, i.e.: good entertainment but not a great novel. It is well written and it is a compelling read. In the following comments, I have excluded elements of the plot that would reveal the story.
For Wallander fans, this is novel # 3 where Wallander's near 80 year old father marries his 50 something housekeeper. Also, Wallander suffers a nervous breakdown which sets the scene for novel # 4.
This is a controversial novel because the complicated plot departs from the Ystad police station formula: it involves two parallel and interconnected stories, one in Sweden and one in South Africa. In some sections Kurt Wallander plays a secondary role or no role. It is similar in length to his later novels - about 500 pages - and it is well written with interesting characters. It is the third novel in the Wallander Swedish police detective series. As we saw in Dogs of Riga, his second novel, there is an international element to the story.
I thought that the novel was good but less than perfect. As in Dogs of Riga, the author Mankell departs from reality. The plot relies on an imaginative set of circumstances involving events outside of Sweden and odd personal relationships and coincidences inside of Sweden. It has a slightly more complicated plot than some of the subsequent novels. Some of the later novels in the Wallander series rely on a string of bloody and gruesome murders to keep the story going. Those murders in those stories go on and on - right to the end - and that becomes a bit too much. Thankfully, that formula is not completely followed here and it is mostly an interesting read. For those reason I think that the present novel is average. It is not as good as Faceless Killers or One Step Behind. Those two are the best in the series. The Wallader novels remind me a bit of the Peter Robinson Inspector Banks series, but Mankell's style is a little more spirited, more daring, and more interesting. Sometimes he departs from reality or the probable, but that is his style.
I will not give away the plot and the essential plot elements are outlined by the publisher: there is a murder of a real estate agent on a remote farm near Ystad. Kurt Wallander and the other Ystad policemen try to solve the crime. The criminals involved turn out to be involved in an international conspiracy directed at the leaders of South Africa.
This is a book that I highly recommend for Wallander fans. Mankell tries to tie the plot to international events, and it works effectively but not as well as in Dogs of Riga.
I like the Mankell approach and I enjoyed the read. The book was good but slightly too complicated and rates 4 stars.
Not bad but rambling.......2006-07-04
This third novel in the Inspector Kurt Wallender series is much thicker than the three others I've read, and I'm of two minds about it. It starts off the way you would expect from a procedural: A female real estate agent is cold-bloodedly killed with a bullet through the head, and for no reason Wallender or his colleagues can figure out. While they're investigating the apparent scene of the crime (they haven't actually turned up the body yet), a nearby house explodes. Then they discover the severed index finger of a black man. Naturally, all these odd clues confuse the hell out of everyone. But then the focus shifts to South Africa in the present day -- 1993, that is, with Nelson Mandella newly released from prison and President De Klerk pushing for free election that will certainly mean the end of apartheid -- and for the first time in the series, Wallender is no longer the P.O.V. character. It's a bit unsettling. Maybe half the book deals with events in Sweden, with the Inspector chasing a thoroughly nasty ex-KGB officer working for a group of highly-placed Boer conspirators. The other half is a largely political thriller (with a strong flavor of Forsyth's _Day of the Jackal_) set in Johannesburg and Pretoria. There's lots of fascinating stuff about South Africa, and Mankell (who, apparently between the last book and this one, moved to Mozambique) seems to know his stuff. And the characters he draws are chilling in their lack of concern for human life -- while Wallender, the cop, is pushed to the brink of a nervous breakdown when he has to shoot someone. Nevertheless, the book is structurally schizophrenic; I wonder if it shouldn't have been written as a completely separate and independent novel, outside the Wallender series. Still, it's generally an exciting and eye-opening yarn, even if it's not what one would expect.
Complex, but never complicated........2006-02-04
I read a great deal of fiction, usually interspersing novels that may arguably be literature with escape fiction, mostly mysteries. I chose The White Lioness to read as a mystery, but I quickly found it compelling as literature. The writing, and/or its translation, is crystal clear. The reader comes to know the characters, of which there are necessarily a lot, given the dual-country plot, and the main ones are truly multi-dimensional. Scheepers in South Africa and Wallander in Sweden, along with their colleagues of lesser importance to the plot, each have exhibit a touching vulnerability. Many mystery authors strive to create non-caricature "good guy" characters, but do not quite achieve such interesting results. Supplemental characters play important roles, also, both in driving the plot and in adding depth. Often, when a story requires so many people and names, it is difficult to keep them sorted. That is not so in this case. Mankell's writing is that lucid.
In many ways, the mystery driving the story is the lesser element of the plot, and that may dissatisfy some readers. To me, it is a brilliant depiction of a detective who becomes drawn into a larger story, a much larger story.
I was equally drawn in.
Wallender is amazing!.......2006-01-23
This third novel in the series blew me away...I couldn't sleep for wanting to get back to this fast-paced novel. I knew Mankell had all these characters tied together but couldn't quite figure out how he was going to pull threw and bring Wallendar out on top. Of course, the last page left me running for the next in the series...

Book Description
Julie Sahni's remarkable ability to make authentic Indian cooking accessible to American cooks continues to make her first book, Classic Indian Cooking, the definitive work of its kind.
This is her long-awaited second book. To prepare it, Julie Sahni traveled extensively throughout the regions of her native India, to assemble a splendid second volume of Indian culinary delights. Whereas her first book explored the riches of Moghul cuisine, this totally new collection systematically reveals the never-before-described treasures of India's vegetarian and grain cooking.
The book begins with a simple explanation of the ingredients and techniques characteristic of this cuisine. For the first time anywhere, Julie describes every classical blend of curry in the Indian tradition, with accompanying recipes on how to use them. From this book alone you will become master both of India's wonderful curries and of the many new varieties you will now know how to create for yourself.
In addition to a thorough going mastery of cooking with curry, this book provides a complete experience of India's incredibly varied vegetarian and grain dishes. Try the heavenly spread of yogurt cheese flavored, with fresh herbs, a favorite of the Gujarati Jains. Be adventurous: make Steamed Rice and Bean Dumplings in Spicy Lentil and Radish Sauce, traditionally served as tiffin one of the great classics of Indian vegetarian cooking.Vegetarians, the super health-conscious, and meat eaters who want to vary their menu with exciting new dishes, all will want to sample the vegetarian masterpiecesvirtual one-dish feasts-that are the very heart of this book: Malabar Coconut and Yogurt-Braised Vegetables; Hearty Blue Mountain Cabbage and Tomato Stew; Baked Zucchini Stuffed with Vegetarian Keema and BuIgur; Madras Fiery Eggplant, Lentil, and Chili Stew; and so many many others. To accompany these dishes, Julie provides an abundance of chutneys, pickles, breads, rice dishes, dals, vegetable side dishes, yogurt salads, and volcanically hot condiments.
Any time of the day you can snack or nibble on tasty foods that will contribute to your health but not your waistline: refreshing chats (salads without oil), a succulent array of fritters, kaftas, and kababs all ingeniously created from fresh vegetables, and a wide selection of crunchy savories from plantain chips to the irresistible giant papad (lentil wafer).
Your sweet tooth is not neglected by India's vegetarian and grain cooking. Lotus Seed Pudding, kulfi (India's delicious ice cream), coconut dumplings, and Quick Glazed Carrot Halwa are only the beginning of the unbelievable assortment of desserts and sweets Julie Sahni's Classic Indian Vegetarian and Grain Cooking makes available to you. Plus divine recipes for lassi (yogurt drink), refreshing teas, and classic South Indian coffee. This invaluable and instructive book places India's ancient tradition of delicious vegetarian and grain dishes directly into your hands.
Customer Reviews:
publishers, please correct the errors! .......2006-01-06
This book has been in print since 1985 - proof enough that it's not just another vegetarian book or indian cookbook, but a particularly good one. The recipes are excellent - some of them intriguing; the introduction is thorough; the index is good; recipes sometimes include ingredients that can't be found outside India, for authenticity's sake, but alternatives are also suggested in most cases; and the writing style is clear.
But I won't give it 5 stars. To me, a book is the responsibility not only of the author, but also the publisher. It's just not acceptable to leave errors in a 20-year-old book, such as the dish from Mysore that turns out to be from Bangalore, or a reference to Tanjore as the site of the Meenakshi temple (that left me wondering - did they get the temple wrong, or is the recipe from Madurai?). Also, if I'm going to pay for a hardcover edition, I expect it to be durable, not start falling apart at the (glued-together) seams the minute I start using it.
Also, I agree with another reviewer that this book should have had a lot more on other grains, especially millet and sorghum which are very popular in India but almost never available in restaurants.
And I might as well mention my pet peeve with both Sahni's books: why the distinction between side dishes and main dishes? I find it meaningless - it would have made more sense to put veg with veg, dal with dal, etc.
Still, if you like Indian cooking and don't want to limit yourself to what your corner curry house can offer, and if you want to learn about a vegetarian tradition which is far and away the richest in the world, you will find this book very enjoyable.
great indian technique source.......2006-01-01
I'll preface by saying that my personal experience with Indian cuisine is limited to the great restaurants around the U.S. that I've dined in. I haven't had the pleasure of going to India, or of enjoying home-cooked Indian food here.
On the other hand, I am an avid cook and have cooked professionally. One thing that all of my favorite cookbooks have in common is that they emphasize technique; another is that they link a cuisine to its culture. Using these books broadens my understanding of the technique of certain cuisines. Getting a feel for different cuisines' techniques and methods helps my overall ability to cook without recipes, and with confidence.
Ms. Sahni's book here has been an excellent primer for me on Indian cooking techniques. The patterns of the recipes emerge. The bases, braises, masalas, and finishing perfumed butters and oils. Just as Italian cuisine has its 'hand' and approach, but also its regional variations, so does Julie Sahni introduce us to the same in Indian cuisine with this book.
My only critique is that the book completely lacks photos, and drawings are nearly non-existent. While the recipes are thorough, sometimes desired texture is hard to gauge without some photos, especially with dishes that are unfamiliar from personal experience.
Otherwise, it is one of my 'primer' cookbooks, and an educational and entertaining glimpse into regional Indian cultures -- through food.
Classic Indian Vegetarian and Grain Cooking.......2005-07-05
Lots of ideas and quality information on ingredients and styles
An Unequivocal and Delicious "Yes!".......2003-10-22
My first reaction to many of these recipes has been "My god! Can you DO that with lentils/milk/yoghurt/vegetables?". But the answer is an unequivocal and delicious "YES!" There aren't tons of glossy colourful pictures smiling out at you (and pushing the price up), and this is a cookbook that has more recipes than you can shake a stick at, so it might be intimidating for some. But fear not. The recipes are well tested, the ingredients readily available, and the descriptions are well written and meaningful. This book has transformed my cooking and my kitchen, with recipes that are tasty, economical, and varied. If you are the least bit adventurous, try this book, I implore you.
A great start toward Indian cooking.......2003-01-19
My wife and I received this book a month ago, for Christmas 2002, and have been cooking our way through it ever since. We are both vegetarians and, while not Indian, have had authentic Indian cooked food.
The recipes are fairly well done, easy to follow, and obviously well tested. Unlike some cook books, the times are correct, the food tastes "right," and the descriptions are accurate. It is well worth having this book as a good introduction to Indian style cooking. Try the Eggplant and Potato side dish (as a main course) over rice, it's wonderful!
There are a few minor annoyances that cause me to only give four stars rather than five. First, the index is horrible. Looking up dishes by the Indian names is tedious as the book has been almost over Americanized. Second, with a title with the word "classic," I am disappointed in the number of items that tell me to "buy this at the store/nobody makes these from scratch anymore/this is too complex, here is a simplified version" in this book. I appreciate the information, but I don't want the variation, at least not without the true recipe too. Third, even most of the side dishes will feed an army. Not being Indian, I would like even more information on meal planning than is given. If I made all the things suggested, we would be eating the same meal for a week straight!
Finally, the book doesn't go into much detail about the different regions and I would prefer to have things divided into regions as well. Again, these are minor, and I recommend this book as a good first book, but the recipes are good, so give it a shot! Oh, there are some typos in the book too, and considering how long it has been in print, they should have been fixed long ago!
Product Description
Over 200 photos & illustrations combined with the author's instructive text make for one of the most useful books on dressage ever offered. Sound practical advice is presented on the progressive training of the horse. For less than the cost of one riding lesson, this may be the most dog-eared book on your riding bookshelf!
Customer Reviews:
Definite common sense.......2007-02-15
I love this book and it's no non-sense common sense approach to training dressage horses. This book starts out teaching the basics from the ground up. This book is a must for any rider, and not just the dressage rider, although I agree that some concepts are a tad too advanced for beginners. Common Sense Dressage will bring your overall riding skills to the next level.
Revelant material........2006-12-18
Although the material was useful, I found the organization and presentation a bit confusing for the novice.
An excellent book for the dressage student..........2000-10-21
This book is an excellent one for any student of dressage. It might be a wee bit complicated for the absolute beginner to riding, but for most who have had some training it's appropriate. The book has a ton of excellent diagrams and illustrations, many showing the view from above so that the desired position of the horse is clearly shown. There are a number of exercises in each chapter which allow the rider to work on various elements on their own as well as with a trainer.
Chapters include: The Horse - How it Functions; Lungeing; The Work in Hand; The Basic Work in All Three Gaits; Activating the Hindquarters; Competition; Special Exercises for Problems; Canter Work; Collection, Extension and In-Between; Piaffe; and Passage. There is also an index which allows you to refer to specific topics.
All in all this is a valuable addition to the library of any equestrian interested in this branch of the discipline, and one I will be sharing with my trainer. Don't hesitate to buy it!
Great Diagrams and clear, concise text........2000-10-18
This is an excellent book for individuals with some basis in dressage as well as a basic understanding of horses and their movement. The many diagrams included with the text are clear, concise and explain how to apply leg, seat and rein aides correctly for most dressage movements. There is also a chapter explaining the timing of the rider's movements for transitions between gaits as well as information to help understand how to move with the horse at the various gaits, including sitting trot. Even with a regular trainer I find this book invaluable and have bought it for several friends as gifts. They also have appreciated the detailed yet simple to understand descriptions of the movements. I especially like the multiple drills that are offered with each movement to help learn the proper execution of the exercises.
Not too impressed!.......2000-08-14
I found some of the information in this book to be very helpful. However, I did find her to be a bit snobbish. I also ride and train in Vienna, Austria, but I do not feel that makes me any better than any other rider in the world. It also does not give Ms. O'Connor the right to tell people to use words like "brav" when working with a horse (especially if they don't know what it means). What is important is that people are comfortable and speak with words and in tones that are comfortable for them.

Book Description
From its founding in 1837 Hathaway Shirts has been the bellweather for quality and style. Ironically for their 120 years or so they did little or no advertising to the general public, promoting their product mainly to the trade or through small newspaper ads or signage at the stores. Then on September 22, 1951, in the New Yorker magazine, an advertisement ran that changed all that. The eloquent Baron George Wrangell appeared handsomely dressed in a Hathaway shirt wearing an eyepatch, with the slogan "The man in the Hathaway shirt." Rarely has a symbol become so identified with a product. This new book traces the history of the Hathaway Shirt, beginning with the early years and concentrating on the styles portrayed in nearly 50 years of advertising. Drawing upon company archives, it is a nearly complete chronology of the evolution of men's shirt fashions in the last half of the twentieth century. For designers this will be a valuable reference. For collectors of vintage clothing, there is the added aid of a guide to current prices. This colorful book is a wonderful addition to the library of fashion history.

Excellent Resource for Customizing/Making Mini Accessories.......2002-02-16
I enjoy this book because it has very easy to follow instructions. Illustrations and accompanying descriptions are excellent. There are a wealth of projects to choose from (decorative, craft items, making/customizing furniture, etc.) which makes this book one that I can always refer to.
Making and Customizing Doll House Fittings.......2000-10-18
The directions given in this book for making and customizing the various items displayed in the book are very clear. The materials list is handy and complete. A wide range of items is included, from tiling floors to plastic casting for ceiling decoration, with furniture and accessories to fill the rooms in between those customized floors and ceilings.
Using this book, you can make the basic furniture, or customize ready-made pieces with gilt, paint, or upholstery. There are also directions for creating and re-creating accessories, such as lamps, mirrors, picture frames, etc. Or you can create smaller accessories, such as pots, bowls, or fruit.
If you like (or can do) needlework, draperies, rugs, cushions, and upholstery are possible.
Overall, the book provides a very good 'how-to' for various aspects of finishing and furnishing a dollhouse. With a little imagination, many of the ideas in this book can be adapted to your style of decor.

Book Description
The Liber Secretorum Alchimie, dating almost back to 1257, presents an attempt at introducing alchemy into the field of Aristotelian natural science (philosophy), with the purpose of providing the practice of manipulating metals with a solid theoretical foundation. Arranged from lecture notes by its author, a student of medicine originating from Pisa, it allows a direct insight into mid-13th century university teaching of natural science, which included astronomical, astrological, meteorological and geographical material. In the case of the present document, the main theological issues of the time are also passed in review. Despite the uncertainty as to the identity of the compiler of the recipes appended to its theoretical part in the 14th century manuscript, from which the text is being edited, several passages of the theoretical part of the Liber Secretorum Alchimie also testify to the general interest of mid 13th-century intellectuals in practical proceedings. So far, little clearly datable evidence has emerged on the teaching and on the dissemination of theories on the transmutation of metals in its earlier mediaeval phase, the 13th century. This document points out that they had been taught and commented upon in lectures on Aristotle's Meteorologica shortly after the middle of the 13th century. It also testifies to the fact that observational evidence was included in discussions at university level. The Liber secretorum alchimie is thus the (at times rather distorted) echo of a lecture on Aristotle's writings, certainly not unlike the commentaries written by Albert the Great.

Customer Reviews:
I really enjoyed this book, it was wonderful!.......1999-10-20
This book by Rudolfo Anaya, Bless Me, Ultima, was a wonderful book. I like the way that he made the reader actually think about what he writes. It really kept me awake at night sometimes. It even made me question my religion! I liked the way Antonio said that God wouldn't forgive everyone, but the VIrgin Mary will forgive everyone. If you haven't read this book, I strongly encourage you to read this!
