Book Description
In James D. Doss's latest complex and absorbing crime novel set on the Ute reservation in Southern Colorado, Charlie Moon's cleverness and his aunt Daisy Perika's intuition-not to mention the spellbinding story behind this unusual day-share the limelight with the vibrant details of Native life and custom.BIZARRE OCCURRENCES CAN HAPPEN Strange things are happening near Granite Creek, Colorado, all in the space of less than twenty-four hours. A Ute shaman dreams of being buried alive and hears the hooting of an owl, signaling impending death. A man walks into Spirit Canyon and disappears, leaving his battered wife both relieved and devastated. A private museum is burgled. An Apache is arrested for assaulting a police officer. And a sniper takes a shot through an antique store window, wounding the proprietor.IN THE COURSE OF A DAYPart-time Ute tribal investigator Charlie Moon would rather be tending to his duties on the Columbine Ranch than playing detective with this puzzling collection of seemingly unrelated events. But when the local police and the FBI-including the beguiling Special Agent Lila McTeague-can't seem to put it all together, Charlie must connect the dots before anyone else dies.

Big Disappointment.......2006-08-05
I tried to stay with this book to the end, but alas, I tossed it with only about 20 pages left. By this time the plot had become so byzantine that I no longer cared who did what. Furthermore, I was getting pretty sick and tired of the sophomoric and unrealistically silly dialog that ran all through the book. The relationship between Moon and the FBI lady, for instance, was like something out of a novel for teenagers. In other words, the book lacked credibility. Doss falls short, I'm afraid, of even a mediocre Hillerman book. Hillerman weaves in the rich and mystical lore of the Indian culture quite effectively. His dialog is pitch perfect, not contrived, as in this book. And, as another reviewer noted, I was put off by Doss's maddening habit of witholding clues and information through the book. I was looking forward to a good read, but all in all, it turned out to be a very flawed book.
The Witch's Tongue.......2006-03-11
The Charlie Moon series is getting more amusing and more "spiritual", for lack of a better word, as it evolves. Certainly, Moon has become a more interesting character. He was always more interesting than the earlier protaganist in the series Scott Parris. I enjoy the series but it is not my favorite reading. I find hiding of clues and information from the reader irritating.
Good Story, Nice Characters, Great Setting.......2004-11-17
Having lived in the American West for most of my life, I've long enjoyed stories that take place in places I've been. And I've been all over the four corners area. In the Charlie Moon mysteries, the action is in South Western Colorado, an area I know particularly well. And the tone of the book reflects well on the area.
The mystery tales spun by Mr. Doss are all you could want of a good mystery. The clues are there, the seemingly unconnected incidents that are creating all kinds of confusion and uproar will all come together in the end. But you knew that, this is the essence of any mystery.
The story is very well told. The characters are not supermen, they have flaws. In between is a good dose of humor. The plot is full of twists and turns, blind alleys and mis-directions so you wonder just how Charlie Moon is going to pull it off.
It's kind of like Tony Hillerman but with the Ute's instead of the Navaho. It's also without the mystical aspects, which makes for a story that I happen to like better.
Witty and engaging mystery.......2004-10-15
Ute tribe investigator Charlie Moon is visiting his aunt when a woman bursts into her trailer with a strange story of dreams, King Kong, and her husband climbing a moonbeam. Charlie and a local cop look, but can't find any sign of the missing husband--but find themselves caught in a roadblock, chasing an Indian who thinks he can fly, and generally running into the kind of trouble that the tribe pays Charlie to help them avoid. Somehow, it's up to Charlie to get to the bottom of the mysteries of missing museum pieces, a missing husband, a strange fight between a cop and an Indian who can't quite fly but is happy to sue the tribe, and, before it's over, multiple murders. Unfortunately for him, he's got to do all the detecting while his love live gets tied up in knots.
Author James D. Doss combines Native American mysticism, a rich dash of humor, a tall (7 foot), dark, and silent hero, and some confused but mostly likable criminals into a fast-reading story. Poor Charlie continues to have rotten luck with his women, great skill with his detecting, and questionable success with his ranch (although beef prices were up four cents).
As with the other books in the Charlie Moon series, THE WITCH'S TONGUE is less about who did it than watching Charlie Moon go through the paces, astound those around him, and manage to come out ahead somehow (except on the little matter of love). At times the story got a bit silly, and I would have liked to see more of Aunt Daisy and her pitukupf, but that didn't keep me from getting completely hooked. Good stuff.
Doss does it again.......2004-10-09
Charlie Moon and company are back -- even the strange little dwarf. A twisting plot that comes together at the end -- and left me amazed at Moon's picking up on such subtle clues.

An interesting turn of events.......2005-02-19
This is supposed to close out the "insane Captain Marvel" story of the previous two volumes. In it, Genis is waaaaay over the edge and has found creative ways to use his new powers. Rick is still trapped in the Microverse and attempting to reach his former friend. In the end, the story tries its best to resolve itself while still leaving enough plot threads hanging to pull you into the next volume. While the whole concept was an interesting diversion, I wasn't really impressed with it. Peter David took the Captain Marvel (Junior) character and really drug him through the mud mentally. So much so that I actually lost any compassion for the guy and couldn't care less whether he got "fixed up" or not. Granted, the mind-wipe of the Punisher in volume 1 was cool, but not much else happened in these 3 volumes that couldn't have been told in a simple two-or-three issue arc. Recommended for the true fan only. The casual fan might not care for it.

Deeply sureal, funny, scary, and strangely relaxing.......2000-06-12
Despite some minor flaws such as once-established character names changing possibly due to fautly editing and printing, this is in my opinion a great book for several reasons I can't really get into right now other than the giant Dragonflys of the Planet Pandora is such a cool and crazy aspect of the book and the story of the mystery of the hind leg is completely wild and that the Strugatsky's are funny as hell. However,I will say that Noon 22nd Century has many compelling characters. And these charaters drift in and out of this long dizzy story of what the future will be like in the 22nd Century while changing in spirit, age, and mindset. In conclusion, If you like your science fiction deep, funny and scary at the same time while being horizonal, moody, inventive, and original, then you'll have to settle for something eles because this book is out of print and I just spilt coffee and squoze the guts of a tuna fish sandwich all over mine. Sorry.

In his jacket photo, ace grill chef Chris Schlesinger has the look of Howdy Doody with a stomach full of barbecue. It's a speechless kind of look. Schlesinger, however, is not a speechless kind of guy. Starting with the motto, "Brown food tastes better," Schlesinger and his writing partner, John Willoughby, show the reader exactly why that is. The ride lasts nearly 400 pages.
It's hard to imagine a pre-Thrill of the Grill time in American culinary life, so mighty has the impact been. It's a book with a built-in virus of insidious and infecting qualities that will have even the least interested among us out at the grill, getting the fire glass-melting hot, trying a few ideas like Grilled Shrimp with Pineapple-Ancho Chile Salsa, or Grilled Chicken Rubbed with Ethiopian Berbere (hot, hot, hot), or Grilled Swordfish Steaks with Yucatan Orange-Herb Paste, or maybe Beef Heart Grilled and Marinated in the Peruvian Way (or maybe not).
Actually, that right there--beef heart--is rather telling. Who else in their right minds would include grilled beef heart in their cookbook? These guys, Schlesinger in the lead, breaking trail, will go anywhere, do anything, and bring it all home to grill and eat.
The sheer love of food pours off these pages--the way it tastes and feels, the way super spices fire up your nervous system, the way the juices run down your forearm and off your elbow--and that's the way it should be. Relaxed. Determined. Thrilled. And with Thrill of the Grill tucked under one arm, you are sure to have the time of your life every time you fire up your grill and start cooking.
Plan on buying a couple of copies. This is one of those cookbooks that will get so grease- and sauce-splattered it will become unreadable. --Schuyler Ingle

GREAT!!.......2007-08-29
A very eye opening book for those that truly care about your pets. If more people would read this there would be alot less pets going to the vet every month for allergies, etc..
A MUST READ!!!!
A Shock To My Senses!!!.......2007-03-12
I was able to get my hands on Ms. O'Driscolls other book which is out of print now,"What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines" and I found it admirable she openly admits in this book she doesn't blame vaccinations only for the illness of her pets. She now is factoring in other possibilities. "Shock To The System" is full of information but I did not find it an easy read. I have read many many books on this topic and consider myself well informed. However it was hard to break down this book in layman's terms for easy understanding and comprehension. I did "get it" but I had to re read many topics over again. I do like that she factors in other reasons as to why our pets are dying horrible deaths at such young ages! Such as pet foods, stress and genetics. I'm a firm believer that vaccines are harmful to our pets and any responsible pet owner really needs to research this before handing over their pet to a veterinarian to decide what is best for them. Ms. O'Driscoll does point this out. Maybe your vet doesn't have your pets best interest at heart but rather their pocketbook !! The more I read the more I understand this. This is a good book to have but please do not stop with it. Protect your pet and read on!!!
Are we over vaccinating our pets? Yes!.......2006-05-03
Catherine goes into details with research from vets on the effects of vaccinations on our pets. Do they need annual vaccinations or are they causing our pets to become ill? Are vaccinations a moneymaker? Yes, pets should be examined yearly to insure good health, but vaccinations should not be the reason for this yearly health check. Catherine also encourages the reader to do more research on their own.
Catherine talks about food and stress and their effect on your animal's health. Catherine used to feed exclusively a raw diet, but has since modified that stance to allow that it can be too much 'energy' for some animals and that a cooked or prepared diet may be more appropriate. Rare for those who have made the conversion to admit that it may not be the 'best' for all dogs.
Shock to the System will make you think - not a bad thing!
I'm looking forward to her visit in May 2006 on CSDogBookReview and learning more from her.
Strongly recommended reading to all pet owners .......2006-04-03
Catherine O'Driscoll presents Shock To The System: The Facts About Animal Vaccination, Pet Food And How To Keep Your Pets Healthy as an informed and informative study of the truths of stress and vaccinations and how such things may actually be the cause of illness in our pets. Readers will be enlightened as Shock To The System is one of the greatest analysis of modern realizations in pertinence to animal health. Shock To The System is very strongly recommended reading to all pet owners for its informational and "user friendly" information on all the elements of basic pet care.

New Thimble Book a Disapppointment.......2007-10-01
On the thin side, both in terms of number of pages and helpfulness of information. Best best for me is the old Warman book on thimbles. Why don't they update that one?
A key to collecting a range of thimbles.......2005-02-08
Thimbles may be considered mundane, ordinary sewing tools by most, but there's a world of thimble collectors who think otherwise, including author Eleanor Johnson who's enjoyed needlework and crafts and who specializes in antique needlework tools. Thimbles And Thimble Cases will fit in the pamphlet section of any collection and provide a key to collecting a range of thimbles, from simple working thimbles to specialty pieces and their cases. From old to more modern fare, Thimbles And Thimble Cases receives color photos and a fine discussion of the differences between luxury items and novelties.

Book Description
Photographic Sketchbook by John Baldessari
This anthology of interviews and discussions documents the polemical positions and strategies of contemporary critical thought in the making.
Engaging nearly 100 artists, theorists, and critics from a variety of fields, these conversations focus on the most contested areas within contemporary critical debate: the relationship between theory and artistic production, the role of art in the community, the meaning of postmodernism, the effects of representation on racial and sexual stereotypes, the relationship between high art and popular culture, and the responsibilities of art institutions.
Reflecting the breadth of the postmodern debate, Discourses includes the voices of filmmakers, artists who work outside traditional art contexts, social activists, novelists, drag performers, architects, and musicians. Participants in the discussions include Michel Foucault, Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak, Greil Marcus, Vito Russo, Edmund White, M. C. Lyte, Roland Barthes, Kate Millett, Malcolm McLaren, Richard Hell, Philip Johnson, and Laurie Anderson.

The Soul of a Butterfly: Reflections on Life's Journey
ASIN: 1602390282 |
Book Description
Many regard Muhammad Ali simply as “The Greatest” heavyweight of all time. Others admire his battles against racial injustice and religious intolerance. A few just call him “Dad.” They are all here in this book—fifty men and women of note coming together to celebrate the man Sports Illustrated crowned “Sportsman of the Century”: Angelo Dundee, Ali’s trainer; Billy Crystal, actor; Sir Henry Cooper, former British and European heavyweight champion; Bert Sugar, journalist and boxing historian; Hana Ali, Muhammad Ali’s daughter; Ferdie Pacheco, Ali’s fight doctor; and more. This book will be treasured by anyone who has ever been inspired by “The Greatest.”
Customer Reviews:
THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING TO WRITE ABOUT THIS MAN.......2002-12-10
"Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World" is a fine documentation, which tells the story of a fine man. It was a good effort by Lennox Lewis, (a heavyweight champion), and Mark Collings; although that I didn't come across any new event or issue regarding the life of this greatest champion that sports has ever known. However, since most books that bear Ali's perspectives are hard to find in continental Europe, I was more than glad to lay my hands on this one.
I have either heard or read every story that I found on the pages of this book, yet, the refreshment it offered was great. I had a satisfactory pastime with it; and I guess that you'll cherish it too.
No matter how much you know about The Greatest, this book will certainly knit-up your weekend. The chapters are well-arranged, and the overall documentation is cute.
Ali through the blind eyes of the world.......2002-04-19
Following the recent release of Hollywood's horrible 'ALI' movie, we have yet another book attempting to ride the Ali bandwagon. The best thing about this book is that it contains a lot of cool photographs that I hadn't seen before. Very little of the text is new or insightful, though. With few exceptions, these people just retrace the same old tired topics. Ali refused to go to Vietnam, Ali won the heavyweight title, Ali is funny, Ali is kind, etc... True, but how many different times do I need to hear somebody say this? Of all the people chosen to comment in this book, few of them have anything unique to say about the man. In addition, a lot of these people don't really seem to know fact from legend. For example, several references are made to the story about Ali throwing his Olympic medal into the river. This is complete fiction, dreamed up for the '70's book and movie, "The Greatest". In reality, he just lost the medal somewhere. There are a few good entries here, such as the ones by referee Arthur Mercante, Bert Sugar, Angelo Dundee, daughter Hana, ex-wife Veronica, and several people who fought against or helped train Muhammad. These cover less than 1/2 the book, though. Instead of getting some redneck comedian who's never even met the man, why not get Joe Frazier or Ken Norton or George Foreman or Ali's current wife Lonnie or his best friend Howard Bingham to comment? How about his brother, Rahman? Leon Spinks, even. The editing is atrocious, at least in the hardcover edition. If you really want to read something about Ali that's well written and well researched, I would suggest the great books 'Muhammad Ali, His Life and Times' by Thomas Hauser and 'King of the World' by David Remnick.
The Worlds Greatest.......2002-03-27
Muhammed Ali: Through the Eyes of the World by Mark Collings and Lennox Lewis helped me tremendously to understand the life of Muhammed Ali. This book kept me interested throughout. What was unique about this book that kept me wondering what was behind the next page was that it was told from many people's eyes, not the authors'. From his opponents to his four wives, you got the story from everyone. When someone's story started to get old, here it was, a new story. The different commentaries give you his whole life story. You hear about the way he fought, how he loved kids, his love for entertaining, his generosity, you hear it all. After reading the book I had the feeling that I knew Ali as a person. I give this book five stars. If I could, I would give it more.
Shows Ali the way he should be shown.......2002-03-21
I just got done reading the King of the world by David Remnick and he did a wonderful job portraying that first part of Muhammads life. But This book, Through the eyes of the world, did so much more for me to understand the life of Muhammad Ali. It is absolutly astonding how people pictured him and how they admire him now. There is no specific writer, it's all comwntaries from different people, actors, writers, poets, photographers, trainers, etc. This book shows whaty kind of a man he truly was, not the man that the public wants you to think he was. He was a man that stood up for himself better than anyone. He got Boxing out of control of the mob and defied how the white man wanted black boxers to act. Some comentaries in this book are short and some are long, but all give very good and detailed explainations and descriptions of how they viewd Muhammad Ali. I give this book a definate 5 stars. I would give it 6 stars if I could. What the heck, I'd give it 100 stars. In fact I do, I give this book 100 stars.
