Spider and his crew of filthy assistants are still dodging attempts on their lives, but Spider finally has an ace to play. He has evidence of a Kent State style massacre, and finally the media will display some backbone, especially after The Smiler has declared martial law.

Spider gets to face down The Smiler just this one more time.

3 out of 5 stars Never took hold.......2006-12-27

I don't know why, but Transmetropolitan never really GRABBED me and held on. I read the entire series based on an overwhelming amount of recommendations from friends, and now that I've finished it, I can't say I'm extremely impressed. Warren Ellis creates a character that is often amusing, but never very realistic or human. I stuck with it through all ten volumes hoping there would be some sort of change towards the epic, but it never materialized for me.

I am a big fan of many other long-form comic series, which is why this came so highly recommended to me. My favorite comic series is definitely Garth Ennis' nine-volume Preacher epic. Transmet and Preacher share a lot in surface commonality. They are both profane, they are both violent, they both explore the extreme boundaries of culture. The difference is that Preacher has heart, and I am left unconvinced that Transmetropolitan has anything besides an amusing main character and several phrases the author evidently thinks are extremely catchy ("filthy assistants" being the main example). The storylines never evolve beyond the episodic, and the authors attempts to force the transformation do not work well.

Definitely give Transmetropolitan a chance, as there is a lot here to love, but if you aren't immediately hooked by the thin first volume, don't expect yourself to like it more as the series progresses. It doesn't change, and that, I think is why for me it is imperfect.

Book Description

Do you dare unearth the secrets of cosmic horror? Within these pages lie the horrifying resolutions to mysteries that have long haunted the devotees of H.P. Lovecraft. The infamous Lovecraft did his best to warn his readers of the unspeakable abominations lurking at the edges of our cosmos, awaiting the opportunity to slaughter mankind. Although Lovecraft died unexpectedly before he could tell all, another voice has taken up the crusade where Lovecraft left off, daring to provide answers vital to humanity's survival. Lovecraft fans will be thrilled by a beautifully illustrated novella, short stories and even essays contained therein, all of them expounding on the work of the Master of Supernatural Horror. Herein resides the terrible secrets of the unholy "crawling chaos", an intergalactic monstrosity that declared war on 10th Dynasty Egypt, intent on destroying mankind and its Gods as well. Uncover the sinister fate of the half-human traveler who was so naive that it never occurred to him that his fellow Deep Ones might view him as a traitor around Innsmouth. And find out how the infamous "Outsider" came to be such a hideous outcast. The key to all this and more lies in yuor hands for the very first time. 5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-06-02

This is what a Lovcraftian collection should be. Almost all the stories are spot on good. While one or two stories in the collection fell flat for me, most were excellent. I will not go into each story in the collection, as others have done that justice already; but "The Insider" was so good that it still gives me a shiver thinking about it.

Any fan of the "mythos" needs to have this collection. While dovetailing closely with HPL's writing, it has originality and freshness that made it a joy (or horror) to read. And you have to love the cover.

4 out of 5 stars An Important Addition to the Mythos.......2005-10-13

In this, his second collection of tales inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's writing, Stanley C. Sargent firmly establishes himself as a master of his craft--a compelling storyteller in his own right and an important torchbearer for the legacy of Lovecraft's Mythos. The best tale in this collection is "The Black Brat of Dunwich," an insightful reinterpretation of Lovecraft's "The Dunwich Horror" that meshes so well with the original one cannot help but think Sargent found the key for cracking a sinister code Lovecraft intentionally wrote as a hidden subtext. It almost begins to feel that one needs Sargent's later work in order to appreciate the antecedent text on all of its multi-faceted levels. I don't want to overstate the point, but I wish future collections reprinting Lovecraft's original tale could all include "Black Brat" side-by-side with it. That being said, Sargent's story may lose some of its relevance for the uninitiated.

Most good Mythos fiction is not only steeped in a sense of otherworldly terror and the macabre, but is also solidly grounded in real-world history. "Nyarlatophis" is no exception; Sargent's knowledge of ancient Egyptian history and mythology appears exhaustive, and this tale--the longest in the collection--was obviously well researched. In some ways, it may actually have been too well researched, as the first third of the story is rather ponderous as the reader wades through what often feels more like an historical essay than a novella. But again, readers who stick with this tale will be glad they did, as the pace picks up significantly half-way through, and the dark, cataclysmic ending is all the more powerful for the grounding in history Sargent provided earlier on.

As for the remainder of this collection, it is a varied mix: an effectively disturbing science fiction tale that brings the Mythos to the stars, a prequel and a sequel to two other Lovecraft classics that also stand on their own as powerfully creepy narratives, a handful of comic takes on HPL themes (fun but probably my own least favorite pieces in this bunch), and one or two twilight-zone style horror pieces with only very loose connections to the Mythos per se. These stories are handsomely illustrated throughout, including a drawing or two by Sargent himself. The author also throws in nine of his whimsical poems, written in a style that blends Edward Gorey with Shel Silversetein. Two of Sargent's non-fiction essays complete this set, one that is really little more than a collection of anecdotes about the possible influences of Lovecraft on the EVIL DEAD films, and the other of which provides some fascinating insights into Lovecraft's biographical self by finding clues in his stories.

For all those enthusiastic minions of things Lovecraftian out there (among whom I count myself one), THE TAINT OF LVOECRAFT is a book that should have a prominent place on your shelf. For the rest of you, TAINT might well serve as a good introduction to the expanded Mythos, but if nothing else, it offers a handful of diverting tales.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing New Perspectives to the Worlds of Cosmic Nihilism.......2005-07-23

These days one of the hardest problems facing Cthulhu Mythos authors is to be able to write exciting tales within Lovecraft's framework, and yet tell these tales in a new and exciting voice. A fresh approach unfortunately seems to be something that numerous authors who've recently contributed to the cannon have been unable to do. So it is refreshing when an author such as Stanley C. Sargent succeeds to do just that, bringing a new perspective to the worlds of cosmic nihilism.

The Taint of Lovecraft is Sargent's second collection of Mythos tales, the first was , also published by Mythos Books LLC. This later collection contains nine tales, nine poems, two essays and numerous illustrations, including interiors and a cover illustration by the author of H.P. Lovecraft dressed up as a Pharaoh.

The standout tale in this collection would have to be "Nyarlatophis, A Fable of Ancient Egypt" which draws us back to the life of Pharaoh Amenemhat I, founder of the Twelfth Dynasty, and his encounter with Nyarlathotep (in the form of Nyarlatophis). The Outer God once more attempts to destroy humanity as we would expect, but this time in a land and culture nearly three thousand years distance from the time when Lovecraft penned his first tale. It is evident that Sargent knows his subject, both Cthulhu Mythos and Egyptian history, and so is able to take us lovingly back to this splendid age so often referred to, but rarely visited by other cannon authors.

One of Stanley C. Sargent's great strengths as a storyteller is his ability to adapt Lovecraft's style, yet make it his own. Stories such as "Live Bait" and "Double Screetcher" incorporate those horrific twists readers expect at conclusion, a trait Lovecraft used so well. But these stories also allow us to see the comic side of the mythos, and to see that our perceptions of what is right and wrong is based purely on our `humanness', and that sometimes we are no better than the horrors we ourselves fight against. Sargent's favourite of his own work, "The Black Brat of Dunwich" likewise has a similar theme. This story tells "The Dunwich Horror" from a completely different perspective, in this case from the viewpoint of Wilbur Whateley, and makes for interesting reading, especially if we consider that Lovecraft's protagonist Armitage is seen as the antagonist here.

The end of the collection contains two essays, the latter of which provides an interesting analysis of "The Dunwich Horror" offering a rarely discussed insight into what self-inflicted and societal-inflicted demons Lovecraft might have been fighting against all his life, but demons that also allowed his fevered artistic expression to flourish. Lastly, each story is introduced by steadfast scholar Robert M. Price (I can see this guy on his own Mythos Collectable Card), who provides his own special touch to the collection providing insights on each story for those who like to know how and where such tales originate.

In summary The Taint of Lovecraft doesn't take the Cthulhu Mythos into new places and new times, rather the reader is drawn back to Lovecraft Country - be that Arkham, Dunwich, Innsmouth or Ancient Egypt - and once arriving there, Sargent turns everything on its head. Nothing it seems, is what it seems, but isn't that what the Mythos is all about?

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Dark Fiction.......2005-07-17

The Taint of Lovecraft is a joy on many levels. Stanley C. Sargent writes with wit and insight that are equally incisive in crafting the tales collected here. These brilliantly original takes on the Mythos fiction created by H.P. Lovecraft will undoubtedly please fans of horror fiction in general and Mythos readers especially. Sargent labors over the historical research that forms the backbone of many of his tales, and the results show in the authenticity and accuracy of his work.

This mix of stories, poems, and two highly entertaining essays is an important contribution to Mythos fiction. More importantly, though, it is a highly satisfying read.

The centerpiece of the book, "Nyarlatophis, A Fable of Ancient Egypt" is one of the most impressive Mythos-inspired stories I've ever read, and achieves the almost unheard of feat of rivaling the work of HPL in its sense of dread and eerieness, even though it is set in time period far removed from that in which HPL wrote.

What may stand out most about Sargent's tales in this collection, though, is their unerring capacity for nurturing the humor and sense of irony that is native to HPL's work but is often lost or overlooked among other Mythos fiction efforts, and bringing it to the forefront.

In short, this is a beautifully written, fantastic book.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Reading Journey.......2005-07-17

A devoted student of the Lovecraftian writing, Stanley Sargent has brought fresh and exciting blood to this art form in his book TAINT OF LOVECRAFT. His stories grab you at the beginning and hold you spellbound to the final words, often those that are unexpected and surprising.

You need not be a student of ancient history to understand Mr. Sargent's stories. He brings everything to life for you, keeping you on an exciting journey through words that are alive and ready to leap out at you as you turn each page. If you are ready to be shocked, surprised, thrilled, and mystified, this book is for you.

Five carefully selected people, each with the chance to earn $1 billion. The catch? They have to descend into Saturn's upper atmosphere and establish a factory that will produce meta, the fuel that powers interplanetary flight. With only enough meta to get them to Saturn, failure will cost them their lives. And all too soon the crew becomes marooned on the back of what they dub a Rukh, a 4-kilometer-long creature that swims in Saturn's upper atmosphere and has two brains, male and female. This engaging book by physicist Robert L. Forward evokes the sense of wonder of old-time science fiction.

        Book Description

In the near future five intrepid men and women have been paid a billion dollars each to risk the first voyage into the upper atmosphere of Saturn. The goal: to convert atmospheric chemicals into fuel to power interplanetary spaceships. But no one anticipates a crash landing on one of the enormous flying creatures known as rukhs that live in Saturn's atmosphere.

4 out of 5 stars entertaining "hard science" fiction.......2006-09-26

Robert Forward is a scientist who writes fiction. He thinks and describes in terms of science problems and then writes a fictional story around it. The story is of the first manned expedition to Saturn. The science behind the mission is well substantiated and interesting, (but most likely only to geeks like myself.) In Forward's world, Saturn is inhabited with creatures that "swim" in it's dense atmosphere. We are introduced to the intelligent, apex predator life forms that have an interesting first contact with the humans. The characters are interesting, but the writing is a little Tom Clancy-ish. Characters have fairly basic personalties and their interactions are a little stale.

The yarn is a good one and the predicament, of possibly being stranded is very interesting.

        3 out of 5 stars Old-Fashioned SF.......2003-09-25

        Spoilers!!

This is typical Forward: wooden characters whose interactions with each other are totally unbelievable, endless detail of beautiful, real near-future science, silly excuse-for-a-plot, and gorgeous, staggering vistas of real otherworlds and their realistic, amazingly creative inhabitants. The ruus, huge gasbags flying in the atmosphere of Saturn, are far more interesting than the humans who contact them, but Forward always does this. The scenes are giant, brilliantly colored, animated Chesley Bonestell movies: the ruus diving to hunt; the humans "climbing down Saturn's Rings" with the aid of the (real) Hoytether, a kind of super rope which Forward marketed; the funeral of an aged rukh whose flockmates sing as she falls endlessly to the lethal gas layers below; the final battle with an alien monster myth-made-real. If you value character and plot, take your business elswhere. For science and the sheer pleasure of the view, read this!

5 out of 5 stars Great Hard SF.......2003-04-26

I loved this book. I could hardly put it down. Being a science-oriented person, I had no problem with all the science. It did not seem dry or boring at all. The speculation as to the nature of intelligent life in a non-Terran ecosystem was fascinating. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Another good book by Forward.......2001-09-10

Can life exist in a gas giant's atmosphere? Intelligent life is
a hard thing to find anywhere in the universe and this book gives us a whale of a story about a sea so far away. A mission of modern science has been to find other intelligent life and communicate with it. Very few unique kinds of intelligent life have been invented by hard science fiction writers. Robert Forward is one of the best at it.

        3 out of 5 stars Don't Read This Book. . ........2000-12-22

. . .for depth of character development! Like many of Forward's novels, there is a definite weakness in that department. HOWEVER, if you like "hard" science fiction -- sci fi which grasps the best that current scientific understanding has to offer, you will thoroughly enjoy this engaging book.

Forward writes of a mission to Saturn's atmosphere in order to build a fuel factory from the (almost) limitless supply of helium contained there. In the process, the crew discovers life -- life supremely suited to its environment.

4.5 for the science, 3 for the plot, 1.5 for the shallow characters. Overall, a 3 -- and a good read.

"This is a book about what we eat in America," says David Rosengarten in his cookbook It's All American Food. For Rosengarten, author of The Dean & Deluca Cookbook among others, this means ethnic specialties like Eggplant Parmigiana and Shrimp Egg Foo Young; regional dishes, such as Philly Cheesesteak, plus barbecue, including Carolina Pulled Pork Shoulder with Two Sauces; and classic American fare like his Best Buttermilk Pancakes and The Ultimatre BLT, which transcends cultural boundaries. Offering more than 400 recipes for coast-to-coast favorites, Rosengarten is at pains to show that our cuisine is endlessly (and admirably) elastic, embracing and transforming traditional, sometimes exotic fare into something distinctly American for which we need not apologize. If he labors this point, Rosengarten has nonetheless done readers a great service in collecting so many characteristic recipes, which have often lacked the thoughtful treatment supplied here. This can mean tweaking more dubious (or degraded) recipes, lightening, for example, General Tso's chicken, or simply finding model formulas, like those for his cobb salad and macaroni and cheese (his recipes sometimes call for convenience ingredients, like banana pudding mix, that signify authentic versions). His section on regional favorites is a mini-guide to the best local dishes from New England to Hawaii, while his ethnic explorations present the food of virtually every group to have settled here--dishes that have gained acceptance, usually, through restaurant interpretations. Rosengarten has, of course, also eyed sweets, and treats such as tiramisu and New York cheesecake are also accounted for. With useful technical illustrations, ingredient notes like Spanish Paprika, and informative asides such as The Perfect Spatezel Method. --Arthur Boehm

5 out of 5 stars The best of the food you remember from childhood.......2006-05-10

German food isn't like German-American food. Italian food isn't -- or at least wasn't, while many of us were growing up -- very much like Italian-American food. And the Chinese food that we experienced when we were children, the Pu-Pu Platters that we thought were so wonderful, is nothing like the food that Chinese people eat in China.

But that sure doesn't mean it's bad.

The disadvantage to Americans' increased food sophistication is that we look down upon the non-authentic versions of ethnic food. Yet, when our immigrant ancestors got here, they discovered that they couldn't get many of the ingredients they needed; they made do, and often those dishes became traditions in their own right. In this book, Rosengarten celebrates the "new American" foods, many of which have evolved from their genesis in some other land. But that's only part of the book.

There's three sections: Ethnic America, Regional America, and Classic America. The first covers what are arguably the best (or at least best-known) of 18 different areas, such as Italian, Russian, Indian. That's about half the book. Regional America tells you how to make the food popular in different areas, such as New England Clam Chowder or Collard Greens with Ham Hocks. The final section has recipes for our general "traditional American" recipes, such as mac-and-cheese or the ultimate BLT.

It's a good premise for a cookbook, sure. But what makes it superb is that these are Rosengarten's recipes. I have several of his cookbooks, and I'm a devoted fan. His explanations actually *explain.* He tells you what you need to know, but never becomes pedantic.

And man, can he cook. These aren't pale, tepid imitations of the bad spaghetti-and-meatballs you got from a steam-table buffet. They're the foods you recall with great fondness from your childhood. I just finished making a quick lunch for four, from his Chinese-American choices: broccoli in oyster sauce, plus kung pao chicken. His Kung Pao uses several kinds of pepper: black pepper, chili paste with garlic, and dried red peppers. (Not to mention hoisin, 8 cloves of garlic, and other tasty stuff.) The layers of heat make a real difference... and this may be one of the best kung pao chicken dishes I've ever eaten.

This is an inexpensive book, and I like it a lot. It has no photos or illustrations, which I realize is a downside to some people. I don't find that to be a problem since these are foods that I'm familiar with, at least in their restaurant incarnations.

I'm sure I'll be turning to this cookbook often. Recommended.

This book is just... GREAT! There are not only American recipes, the book includes foreign recipes (adapted) as Russian, Mexican, Spanish or from Asia. Hey people, are you looking for a good and complete book of recipes? This is your book. I liked it very much, it sounds strange isn't? I'm not the author! ha ha. It's true, it's very good.

5 out of 5 stars Great classroom resource!.......2005-08-29

I'm a chef and I used David Rosengarten's great culinary ride through the USA as a valuable tool in teaching American Regional Cuisine at the local community college. He did his homework! Since I've lived all over this country, it was a stroll down memory lane and such fun to see how he zeroed in on some of the eccentric but really tasty dishes that make American cuisine so unique. Sure we all eat hamburgers, hot dogs and pot roast, but if you go to Cincinnati, you have to try the five way chili; or headed for Chicago; don't miss the deep dish pizza. Mr. Rosengarten's recipes are right on the mark

5 out of 5 stars Best cookbook ever.......2005-02-04

This is my favorite cookbook in the world. Just ask your friends their favorite dish from childhood, pick up this book and make an incredible version better than anything your mother or the local Chinese restaurant ever saw. Egg Foo Yung, Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, Chicken and Dumplings, tacos you name it. Yumm.

3 out of 5 stars a cookbook with no photos?.......2004-11-25

I bought this cookbook as a gift for the mother of French exchange student who was interested in American cooking. While it does give a good overview of many "American" dishes, I was disappointed that it has no photos or illustrations. It's also very awkward to use a book w/this type of binding in the kitchen. I would recommend this book if you want a readable overview of "american" recipes ("american" because most of the recipes are derived from international and ethnic origins, but not if you want a nuts and bolts cookbook.

4 out of 5 stars If you love your cat, read this book.......2007-07-31

This is one of the most helpful books that I've read on the subject of feline health and nutrition. I'm not one of those foo-fu, holistic, health nuts, who would try to feed organic granola to my cat, but having recently lost a twenty-three year-old feline friend to cancer, I have become far more conscious of what goes into my cats' bodies. While I might make the wrong choices for myself, my cats are depending on my to make the right choices for them, and the Goldsteins, through their book, have given me a lot to think about, much of which I've already implemented.

5 out of 5 stars The Best by Far.......2007-06-27

This is by far one of the best books on holistic health for animals. It is easy to read and understand, and it covers alot of information. Well worth the investment.

            5 out of 5 stars Dog Lover's Must Have.......2007-01-12

I purchased this book on the recommendation of a friend and I was not disappointed. This book gives you an overview of many different medical problems that your pet may encounter. Then they break it down into what the Vet will recommend, followed by what other things you can do to treat the pet holistically, either as an accompaniment to the vet's recommendations, or instead of (this is your choice of course). It's very well written, easy to read and understand. Many times these types of books sound good, but are disappointing when you read them. This one is not disappointing and I honestly believe every pet owner should have this as an important reference.

Dirt cupcake mix, as American as apple pie. Nipple lightener from Japan. Tick juice, indispensable in Venezuela for black magic love rituals. Sunglasses from Zimbabwe with shades cut from plastic juice bottles and no lenses. Korean disposable straw sandals made especially for mourners and corpses. Is this stuff cool or what? But wait--there's more. Flip through this book in search of international weirdness, and it's a pretty sure bet you'll wind up absorbing some sobering information about sex, death, destruction, poverty, and the arrogant ways of multinationals. Under the guise of an ultrahip consumer's guide to the world's nifty stuff--divided into sections labeled "Food," "Fashion," "Animals," "Body," "Soul" and "Leisure"--1000 Extra/Ordinary Objects is a subversive crusader for human rights and ecological awareness.

Sure, you can find out how to buy your very own Dom Perignon-flavored sorbet or a CD of "Music for Healthy Pets." But you'll also stumble upon objects like the cute little bright green Russian-made PFM-1 antipersonnel mine, "a favorite toy of generations of Afghan children" punished for their curiosity by a double whammy of liquid explosive and tiny blades. On other pages, seemingly innocuous objects--like the sweetly lumpy doll couples made of tree bark by Elliot Chitungu of Zimbabwe--turn out to have a bitter subtext. (Chitungu, who is gay, makes all his couples heterosexual; in his country, homosexuality is a criminal offense.) Other objects are examples of savvy recycling, like the paper made in Malawi from elephant dung and recycled cardboard.

With straightforward descriptions in both English and French, unblinking photographs of young people modeling even the most outré objects, and a Yellow Pages that includes information about little-known charitable organizations worldwide, this is a fun book with a heart of gold. --Cathy Curtis

            Book Description

A humorous and educational guide to "everyday" stuff from all over the world Things, objects, stuff, trinkets, tools, materials, gadgets, the things we use, abuse, throw away, cherish, depend on: these are the things we own, simple objects for our everyday lives. They may or may not hold special meaning to us, but their importance, as objects of cultural identity, is unmistakable.

Produced by COLORS under the direction of Oliviero Toscani, famous for his controversial Benetton campaigns, 1000 Extra/Ordinary Objects is a humorous and educational guide to stuff from all over the world. Discover the wonderful absurdity of a priest's portable mass-in-a-briefcase kit, or the stunning difference between flyswatters from Zimbabwe and South Korea. Ogle at the juxtaposition of neoprene surfing shoes and bullfighting slippers; have a gander at a can of blowfish soup. You'll see that what is ordinary halfway across the world (or perhaps for your neighbors across the street) may be totally foreign to you.

In case you see something that you absolutely must have, check out the yellow pages section at the end of the book; here you can find out where to get it and even how much it costs, as well as lots of little tidbits of interesting information to make your journey complete. Next time you pick up your toothbrush or comb your hair, you may think twice about the things that you use every day - perhaps they're not so ordinary after all.

This is a wonderful collection of objects, truly an artistic selection of eye-popping, category-crossing, often beautiful things. Each object also has a very very nice description, laying out who made and why, and giving an idea of how it functions. You get battery-operated tongues - think of the uses you can put that to! - and scores of traditional objects such as funery slippers and straw hats or cow-tail medicinal brushes. It is a feast for the imagination, funny, and provocative.

Recommended for industrial designers and art lovers alike.

Objects: stuff, knick-knacks, toys, trinkets, tools, curios, gadgets. The things we use, abuse, collect, toss away, cherish, depend on or can't live without: these are the material goods that fill our lives. Those shown in 1000 EXTRA/ORDINARY OBJECTS may or may not hold special meaning to you, but their importance as objects of cultural identity is unmistakable.

Produced, under the direction of Oliviero Toscani, then design director of Colors magazine, 1000 EXTRA/ORDINARY OBJECTS truly illustrates Colors' motto that "diversity is good" and translates perfectly into a book that celebrates the intrinsic cultural differences in everyday objects.

5 out of 5 stars I was drawn to it!.......2004-04-15

I was walking around the bookstore, and this book popped out at me! I'm not normally an art fan, but I'm big on pop culture, and I had to pick it up to look at it!

I found it a strange book, which I loved. It's just filled with ordinary and not so ordinary items that we may have used ourselves. (or not)

Example: Do you remember Squeez-its? I remember drinking those juices in elementary and junior high. What happened to them?

There were Japanese "blood type" condoms that are said to sell 2 million every year in Japan.

One very interesting item I found was "Doti," which is hardened termite excrement, believed to give strength because they are rich in minerals. Women in Zambia eat it during their pregnancy.

One very disturbing picture I found was of an Aryan doll that KKK members give to their children to play with. One good thing I read was that the membership is dwindling, from five million in 1920, to two thousand, five hundred in 1998. Not perfect, but getting better.

Basically, it's a good small coffee table book that will generate some interesting conversations. It's written in French and English. I think that it would be good for all cultures to read, in order to understand each other better.

Don't forget to look up the "edible cow pie!" Which is really chocolate, caramel, and pecans, which is destined to turn some heads.

Of course I'm going to buy the two books together, the first one was so interesting!

On the cover, shows some Petrodex, which is toothpaste for dogs, something that I actually used in the past! It gives some useful information that not everyone knows, which is: if you don't brush your dogs teeth often, it can lead to gum---AND heart disease. If you buy them toothpaste, don't forget to buy "music for healthy pets," which has a cute puppy on the cover. The Japanese veterinarian Norio Aoki claims that, "Cheerful but serene music is good for dogs and romantic music is good for cats." I wonder how he found that out. Keeping with the pet theme, don't forget "Thirsty Dog!" It's a pet drink in crispy beef flavor, and fish flavor for cats. Who knew?

I thought that the "teddy bear passport," was really cool. Basically, they started being handed out to children to keep abductions from happening by parents who don't have custody. Now, Japanese, British, and Australian babies have to have them. There are two teddy bears on the cover, and their are instructions inside how to keep "teddy" safe.

Of course, just like the last book, it shows the ugly side of things. There is a "Kaba Kick," Russian Roulette for kids. You point the gun at your head and pull the trigger. If the gun doesn't fire, and the pair of feet don't kick out, you win points. Disturbing.

One more I found was the "Battered Doll." Basically, it's this smiling doll with missing teeth, a bandaid on his cheek, a bruise on his forehead, and a black eye. It claims that, "physical and psychological abuse is a serious problem in Spain." Psychologists have said that "if they (children) see a battered child, they won't find it alarming. They get used to holding it, find it cute, and this desensitizes them." I couldn't believe this but, they tried to ban it, and they failed!

Once again, this book is in English and French and gives you a little peek into other cultures and their daily home items. I want to get more books like this! Very interesting!

I really like Taschen box calendars and have had one on my desk for the last three years. While most of their calendars involve a particular artist or movement, this one concerns interesting objects from all over the world.

As appealing as that can be (and indeed, most of the objects and their descriptions are interesting), there's a strong sexual skew in the calendar as a whole -- enough to make you want to hide it from the kids. For instance, objects include sex toys with full color depictions.

It would have been a much better piece of work if it was designed for all ages. Or, at the very least, its adult skew was listed prominently on the box.

Nothing's worse than having your morning coffee, tearing off yesterday's calendar page, and being greeted by a photograph of a pink lipstick vibrator.

                    Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
