A Great British Cozy Mystery! Wonderful characters, too.......2007-09-20
This is the third book in this series, and I enjoyed it a great deal. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I especially enjoy the "Englishness" of it and the interaction between the family members in Lois' household. Have come to really enjoy this series! My husband is British and reading this feels like "home."
According to her webpage, Ann Purser lives in the East Midlands, in a small and attractive village which still has a village shop, a garage, pub and church. Here she finds inspiration for her novels about country life. She has only to do her daily shopping down the High Street to listen to the real life of the village going on around her to find inspiration.
Wonderful on Wednesday.......2007-05-06
The Lois Meade mystery series is extremely enjoyable! Each new book is better than the last. Weeping on Wednesday was a little darker than the first two, but the story line has evolved into more complex characters and events. I don't think anyone who picks up these books will be disappointed.
Because I love English village mysteries..........2007-03-20
I continue to read this series. I picked up Murder on Monday and enjoyed it enough to read Terror on Tuesday. There was something about 'Tuesday' that bored me, but I'd already ordered Weeping on Wednesday, so...After the disappointment of 'Tuesday', I was pleasantly surprised by Wednesday. The romantic thought of living in an old mill peaked my interest and the family that lived in it did too. I do wish Ms. Purser would include more descriptive passages to help the reader feel as though he's there, enjoying the sounds and smells of the village. My interest was captured by the anxious-on-the-inside, prim-on-the-outside spinster, Enid Abraham, whom I immediately liked. In fact, it would be a great idea if Ms. Purser moved Lois and family out of the village and allowed Enid to play sleuth. She has the tenacity and intestinal fortitude it takes to dive into a criminal investigation. The plot, what plot the story contained, was familiar yet still enjoyable. I wasn't bothered by the simple plot, but I have to confess that I don't care for the series' main character, Lois Meade. She's often rude, allows her gem of a mother, 'Gran' to do most of the caretaking of the family (Lucky Lois), and snips at her husband Derek. Lois annoys me in that she can't decided if something is "interesting" or "interestin'". Since my own grammar is imperfect, I don't mind a dropped 'g' at all, but I do wonder why Lois's grammar goes downhill when she speaks with Inspector Cowgill. Does he intimidate her or does she want to appear to him as the cleaning lady she was instead of the owner of a cleaning business that she is? Whichever, I'd like for their relationship to be a bit more defined. Do they have a secret hankering for each other or is the author just teasing us to add another facet to the characters? I have another confession to make - I'm several pages into 'Thursday' and I'm enjoying it, but if Derek calls Lois 'gel' or 'me ducks' one more time, I think I'll pitch the book right out the window the same way someone's pitching the calendar pages out the windows on the covers of the gel's books.
Wacky Lois Meade strikes again!.......2006-04-20
Spunky, no nonsense Lois Meade delights as before. Lois's interest in and care over her "cleaners" is heartwarming. A must read to all who have come to love Lois's family and friends.
No weeping for this author!.......2006-02-25
A new series for me and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Well written, with characters strong and believable. Ms. Purser tells a story, gets you interested in the people, places and events and then wraps it all up very satisfactorily, never leaving you hanging about unsolved events. Have the next installment on order!

Book Description
Delving into the labyrinthine quagmire known as the paranormal, Staretz Encounter is the story about news reporter, Rudy Styne, from New York City, and his Eurasian counterpart, Dr. Imo Bern, a neuroscientist from a secret parapsychology laboratory in Siberia. The Soviet Union has collapsed, Eurasia is in turmoil. A right-wing extremist, Petar Bonzovalivitch, has come to the fore. Marshalling a cadre of psionic soldiers whose brains have been rewired, Bonzovalivitch launches a clandestine operation to topple the West and restore the empire that was once Russia. His head of psi-ops is black magician Dr. Georgi Boshtov, ex-KGB agent and grand-nephew of Gregori Rasputin. Their target for capture is Egyptian superpsychic Abdullah Manu.
A controversial celebrity, Manu's psychic feats have splintered the scientific community. From the point of the view of the media, Manu is passed off as a charlatan, and the parapsychologists who study him, like NYU physics professor Jay Ketchembach, are billed as pseudoscientists.
Rudy Styne, reporter for Modern Times, wakes up one morning to a foreboding dream which comes true later in the day. Having never had a psychic experience before, the reporter decides to research the topic for an article for the magazine. At the same time, he also begins to uncover Petar Bonzovalivitch's nefarious plan and also interview Professor Ketchembach and Abdullah Manu. Eventually, Rudy and his girlfriend, Chessie Barnsworth, meet up with heartsick scientist, Imo Bern, at an international conference on psychotronics. Bern, who was performing the brain operations necessary for the creation of the legion of human cyborgs, tries to defect and pass his knowledge to the West as Rudy attempts to persuade an all too skeptical news community that Bonzovalivitch is more than an outrageous buffoon.
As the story progresses, Rudy visits psychic researchers and an avatar in search for ultimate truths, only to return to New York to find his local guru, Professor Ketchembach, murdered. Georgi Boshtov and his cybernetic goon squad are on the loose. They kidnap Chessie and also capture Rudy and Abdullah Manu. The climax pits superpsychic Abdullah Manu against the evil occultist Georgi Boshtov in an allogorical battle which recapitulates the eternal struggle between light and dark forces for control of the planet.
In the genre of the Stephen King novels and such movies, television shows and books as The 6th Sense, Martrix, The Green Mile, Powder, The Fury, Lawnmower Man, X-Files, X-Men, The Exorcist and Celestine Prophecy, STARETZ ENCOUNTER is a New Age trek through a paradigm-shifting world where telepathy and telekinesis are more than arcane possibilities.

A Very Worthwhile Ride.......2005-01-05
Because I learned so much from Seifer¹s first book WIZARD, which is a biography on the inventor Nikola Tesla, I decided to check out STARETZ ENCOUNTER, even though it was a novel. Not only was I not disappointed, I was truly amazed. I couldn¹t tell where reality ended and fiction began. The story reads like a real-life drama, kind of remindful in tone of THE FIRM or MARATHON MAN. It is a tale about the American news reporter Rudy Styne (a take-off on the name Rudolf Steiner??) who begins to study the bizarre world of the paranormal and along the way discovers a plot by ex-KGB right-wingers to murder Western neuroscientists who are studying ESP. Some of the characters seemed to be based on real people. For example, Abdullah Manu was very remindful of Israeli spoonbender Uri Geller.
I liked very much Seifer¹s attempt to show actual experiments in the field of parapsychology as the plot follows Styne through the literal mind-field of the world of ESP. I enjoyed the relationship between Styne and his girlfriend, Chessie. Styne¹s alter ego, Imo Bern and his brother an Olympian also humanize the story.
This is by no means a simple tale, for just as we follow Styne¹s investigation, we also, through Imo's eyes, go into the heart of Siberia to enter a top-secret underground Russian parapsychology lab. Imo is a three-dimensional character torn between his duty to his nation and the duty to his own soul as he, and we, the reader, grimace during the grisly experiments he must perform on the brains of live monkeys and later on humans. Two of the characters in this book are actually monkeys. There are also very scary villains
One of the highlights for me in this story is the ability of the author is to hold the reigns on the far out stuff so that everything that does happen seems possible, even though the book covers such far-out topics as ghosts, psychokinesis, levitation and mental telepathy. Fun and thought provoking.
Message from the Author.......2003-10-22
There were two events that sparked the writing of STARETZ ENCOUNTER. (1) The arrest in Moscow in 1977, of American news reporter Robert Toth by the KGB, for obtaining a paper on telepathy and brain-wave biofeedback, and (2) The shabby treatment superpsychic Uri Geller received from the American press after being tested successfully at Stanford Research Institute and other U.S. military think tanks. Except for the fair front-page coverage in The New York Times, practically every other media outlet including the TV networks ABC, CBS & NBC, and also Time and Newsweek, reported the Toth arrest, yet purposefully edited out the topic of the science paper he received!
This slanted coverage has influenced the universities. For all intents and purposes, no major physics or neurology department in this country is studying such a topic as telepathy, even though the evidence for its existence is overwhelming. It is for these reasons that I wrote the novel. A fictional thriller with a sci-fi twist, STARETZ ENCOUNTER takes the reader into the fantastic world of the paranormal, as the story also weaves its way not only through New York and its subway system, but also to Antigua, Florence. Bhutan, Egypt, Japan, and also to a secret underground parapsychology laboratory buried in the heart of Siberia. A comprehensive bibliography has been included at the end which gives the facts behind the yarn.

Book Description
The heart of Burgundy, the Côte D'Or, produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines that are unrivaled in their quality, intensity, and ability to age in the bottle. On this "golden slope" in eastern France, with its unique terrains and climats, grow the vines for some of the world's finest wines, among them such heralded names as Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet, and Aloxe-Corton. Clive Coates, Master of Wine, has spent much of the last fifteen years in the Côte D'Or, and this book is the splendid result of his assiduous exploring, tasting, and assessing of the region's wines.
With his unique access to each clos and domaine, and to individual negociants and vignerons, Coates may know more about the Côte D'Or and its wines than any other living writer. In Part One, he describes the Côte D'Or's famous villages, introduces every manor grower and his wines, and evaluates each grand and premier cru, recommending the best sources in every climat. Part Two profiles the top sixty domaines, with notes on a vertical tasting of one of their wines. Part Three consists of vintage assessments on the best red and white years since 1945 and includes thousands of detailed tasting notes.
Côte D'Or is a work of love and passion, praise and criticism, understanding and scholarship. Above all, it is a celebration of one of the world's great wine regions, the people who live there, and their fabled wines. It is an essential addition to every wine library and an inviting read for any wine lover.

Coates Review.......2007-04-10
Overall, the text is easy to read and it is educational. However, the individual wines reviewed are not even close to being up to date. Because this was written years ago, it doesn't cover many of the new up and coming wines and vintners.
The best of its kind.......2006-11-10
Burgundy is one of the most difficult-to-grasp wine regions in the world. Many studies have been done on the soil, climate, wind direction, sun exposure, rainfall, etc., yet nobody really knows, yet, why one acre of Burgundy produces a certain kind of wine and the acre right next to it something different. Clive Coates book comes as close as humanly possible to explain it. He begins his sections with a "History" of the region, then continues with "Location", "Vineyard", and then defines and describes the wines made from the Grand Crus and the Premier Crus, recommending sources and also providing the size of each vineyard. Also, he covers vintages.
It's amazing how Coates takes such a difficult region and maps it out so succinctly for us. Far better effort than Parker's "Burgundy".
If you're only going to have one Burgundy book..........2000-12-24
...this is it. Along with Remington Norman's Great Domaines of Burgundy, this is a must have reference book if you're serious about Burgundy. Coates understands Burgundy and covers it in considerable depth. No, you won't find tasting notes on every wine you look for, but you'll find quite a few. I find myself going back to this book regularly both for specific references and to refresh my knowledge.
Excellent single-volume work on Burgundy.......2000-12-21
This book is an excellent reference work for the serious amateur of Burgundy. The focus is very much on the top estates and domains of the Côte d'Or (Côte de Nuits & Côte de Beaune, as opposed to the Maconnais, Beaujolais, or Chablis -- all technically part of Burgundy in the French appellation system); while well organized and refreshingly jargon-free, debutants looking to ease themselves in to the most complicated wine region in the world might want to look elsewhere.
After living in Burgundy for six months, visiting almost 100 domains, and looking at just about every reviewer's notes, I trust Coates above anyone when it comes to Burgundy. He is a believer in terroir, and cares deeply about balance and finesse; those whose tastes track Parker's, who care most about extract, color, and power are probably looking at the wrong book. (They're looking in the wrong region, too -- and at the wrong varietal for that matter.)
This book is an absolutely essential part of every oenophile's library. Why only 4 stars? The reviews are somewhat out of date -- a problem for anyone with a relatively new wine drinking/collecting habit (latest vintage reviewed is 1996, I believe, and that one only briefly). Also, the tasting notes are not as comprehensive as one might wish -- Coates sometimes limits himself to notes from a single vertical tasting in a given vigneron's cellar.
If you are serious about Burgundy.......2000-10-23
Clive Coates has written a scholarly yet lively and entertaining book. A confusing array of locations, producers and other vital information for the serious collector or the serious appreciator of Burgundy wines is clarified and successfully elucidated. Coates tackles the subject with finesse and a refreshingly unbiased viewpoint. A masterwork.

The DEFINITIVE introduction to baseball card collecting!.......1999-09-17
Al Rosen is one of the most brash and self promoting dealers in the world. He certainly doesn't need to write a book to pay the rent, but fortunately he did. This book, although somewhat dated, is an essential read for anyone considering diving into the collecting of baseball cards. A quick and interesting read that you will find guiding you from beginning to advanced collecting. His insights on the trends of card grading and Tiffany sets are the only areas that where he has seemed to be proved wrong (for the time being, at least). His "Mr. Mint's Maxim's" are rules to live by before making any card purchases. Amongst all the books on baseball cards, this one truly is a "gem"!

About homelessness.......2003-06-30
I was hooked after I read the first few pages! A true story, that reads like a mystery! Laurie Anthony has captured the reality of homelessness through her experience with a homeless man. She tells his story (and hers) in such a honest, soul-searching way that I also examined my own beliefs and misconceptions about the homeless. In addition, the research she sites about homelessness, poverty, mental illness, shelters, welfare, and unemployment was informative and helpful. This book can be read as a memoir, a self-help book, or an introductory text to the problem of homelessness.
One Women's Writing Retreat Review.......2001-01-21
Have a Great One! A Homeless Man's Story is about a panhandler named J.C. struggling to survive in New York City. But it is also the story of a womanon a journey of self-discovery. It is the story of the bond that can form between two people who make a connection by chance, and find enough courage to tell each other the truth. It's about coming to an understanding: that some mistakes in life can be rectified, while others never will. Yet, the message in the book is uplifting. If you let go of blame and let in compassion, you can grow and make a difference in the world...
New Book Reviews.......2001-01-20
I would recommend this book, especially for students. It would be a great way to introduce them to this whole issue. The book is written in an easily readable style, with many resources listed at the end of the book for further research. Diane Morgan, Editor in Chief, New Books Review
The Boox Review.......2001-01-20
With remarkable skill and resolve, she managed to whittle away at J.C.'s paranoia and distrust, and the resulting chronicle, "Have a Great One!" is a triumph. Stirring and joyful, it's a perfect seasonal example of heartfelt benevolence - and manifesto for extending year-round kindness to fellow strangers everywhere. The Boox Review
