Book Description
When thirteen-year-old Matthew Whately goes missing from Bredgar Chambers, a prestigious public school in the heart of West Sussex, aristocratic Inspector Thomas Lynley receives a call for help from the lad's housemaster, who also happens to be an old school chum. Thus, the inspector, his partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, and forensic scientist Simon Allcourt-St. James find themselves once again outside their jurisdiction and deeply involved in the search for a child—and then, tragically, for a child killer. Questioning prefects, teachers, and pupils closest to the dead boy, Lynley and Havers sense that something extraordinarily evil is going on behind Bredgar Chambers's cloistered walls. But as they begin to unlock the secrets of this closed society, the investigation into Matthew's death leads them perilously close to their own emotional wounds—and blinds them to the signs of another murder in the making....

Great Read.......2007-09-08
I think this is my third read of an Elizabeth George novel. I loved them from the first, and (so far) found this the best. The character development is wonderful, and I had no idea who "did it" `till the end. Kudos!
Good Reading.......2007-08-23
I love this author. All her books are great. Book arrived in great shape and price was right.
George's naivete on Human Sexuality.......2007-07-01
I was dismayed by Ms. George'm s constant reference pairing Pedophilia with homosexuality. Further demonstrating her English provincial mores of this perversion by allowing her protagonist, Inspector Lynley to actually protect a fellow classmate and not disclose or better yet arrest the fellow for possessing "child pornography"(even giving it a name seems to relegate it's status to acceptable seems beyond comprehension).
Well-Schooled in Murder Mysteries.......2007-04-10
Elizabeth George is, in my opinion, the standard by which all English detective novels are measured. This -- one of her early books -- is as finely plotted and written as any in the Lynley-Havers series.
Lynley is asked to investigate a missing child at a private school, and he and Havers are thrust into a world of lies, intrigue, and twisted passions, thinly veiled in upper-class civility.
Everyone has a secret, and Lynley is charged with unraveling the web of lies that threatens to destroy more than one life The resolution is full of twists, turns, and surprises.
A good Lynley & Havers novel.......2006-12-17
If you enjoy the series you'll like this one.

Customer Reviews:
"By Istar, that was good!".......2006-06-29
Well, having read The Cataclysm before this, I was prepared for more worthless depressing stories except one or two (see my review on it). However I was pleasently suprised. Nearly all the stories have the same moral, but each one shows it in a different light. "Six Songs For The Temple Of Istar" was rather good, considering I usually don't appreciate poetry. "Colors Of Belief" however, was very good, showing how even the gods of evil contribute their share to the balance. It was very inspiring to see a dark elf have compassion for other races who were (for the most part) righteous. "Kender Stew", was a gay tale, and showed some small revenge on the part of The Knights Of Solmania on Istar, despite having no true moral. "The Goblin's Wish", despite being sadly tragic showed how we should unite instead of trying to win for ourselves. The only two who came out clean were the elf who wanted to defeat the madness of Istar and the kender, who was pure of heart and got his beautiful and moral wish for peace for his friends and him. "The Three Lives Of Horgan Oxthrall", showed again the beauty of mercy and how it comes back to you as said "send your bread upon the water, for one day you will find it". "filling Out The Empty Places", was a not written as good but, again showed the beauty of mercy and its rewards."Off Day", was another gay story about the clan of Bulp, but, unlike "Kender Stew", made a profound impact upon the world and showed how one small thing, gully dwarves emptying a cask of wine, changed the world. Finally last and best, "The Silken Threads", showed us once again the power of love and started a beautiful tale which continued in "The Cataclysn" (again, see my review). Also, Raistlin appears and as always, the last story gives us (at least me) the proof that even when all seems dark, there is hope and love.
PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!.......2002-10-03
... I actually liked three stories in this book. The poem is worthless, and a few more were downright too hard to read and boring, but if I had the desire to stick with them they might have been worthy. Get this book! If not for the stories, get it for the last story written by Weis and Hickman. You will be surprised that a Hero of the Lance makes an appearance! I can't wait to read the next book. Even though the poem in this was horrible, it was better than most early dragonlance books I have read, but I must say Knaak finally has a good story. Unlike his Huma and Kaz books. Bravo Knaak. Maybe he should always write short stories, but he did leave me wanting more for once. GET THIS BOOK!
Most stories good, a couple disappointing.......2002-01-20
As I am not a huge fan of short stories, I was surprised to find most of these excellent. 'Colors of Belief' was an further insight as to how the Games of Istar worked after Caramon's experiences in the Legends. 'Kender Stew' was very funny and a nice little story. 'The Goblin's Wish' was my favourite, a saddening tale of how different races banded together to fight Istar. 'The Three Lives of Horgan Oxthrall' was not so good. The scribe's narration is just silly, I think Douglas Niles could've just told the story and got on with it. Far and away the worst story was 'Filling the Empty Places'. I find myself being more and more disappointed by Nancy Berberick's work. Stormblade was okay, but her writing style has definitely gone downhill since. 'Off Day' was hilarious. And finally, 'The Silken Threads' again showcased Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's wonderful talent which puts them at the forefront of the DL world.
Those disappointed by the other Tales books will find this a better one, with more information into a neglected part of Krynn's history.
Well...........2001-10-26
I have to give all the short story novels 3 stars. There are some stories you won't like but they'll 2-4 really great ones that will make the books worth the price.
Excellent work.......2000-05-11
This is what you are looking for when you want to know about Ansalon before the Cataclism; yes, it is at times depressive, but that's the whole point.
Customer Reviews:
Preachy and unconvincing.......2003-05-13
Combines the worst features of Kim Stanley Robinson and Jerry Pournelle, without the redeeming qualities of either.
I'm generally sympathetic towards libertarian ideas and fiction. But this book made me want to go out and repress someone, just to be contrary. The only people I can imagine liking this are people who are already absolutely convinced of the absolute and unconditional RIGHTEOUSNESS of the author's 2x4 message (whack!), with neither nuance nor room for discussion. If that fits your religion, go for it.
There are better treatments out there. Anyone who wants some really first-class libertarian writing should check out Vernor Vinge's story "The Ungoverned," or Poul Anderson's Hugo-winning "No Truce With Kings." Both of these are far better stories, far better written--and far more convincing.
A great tongue-in cheek Time-travel novel........1997-04-28
Set in the same framework as one of his other great books, The Probability Broach, Mr. Smith has created yet another tongue-in-cheek, cynical and sarcastic poke at established society and liberalism. The hero, Bernie Gruenblum, is a delightfully politically incorrect individual; a refreshing character in an age where more and more authors find it impossible to visualize anything controversial. Bernie's one desire is to sit back, enjoy life (preferably a large beer and long cigar with a wench on the side), but keeps getting interupted with crises such as his flying-saucer/time-machine getting hijacked. Again, like his other North American Confederacy books, if you are a liberal or of left wing politics, don't bother. Otherwise it is a GREAT and amusing read

Customer Reviews:
WOW.......2007-09-02
This is the best vegetarian/vegan cookbook ever. I am a collector of cookbooks and it is always great to find one with new creative recipes and this one surpassed my expectations. I would not consider this book for beginner cooks the recipes are lengthy, not 30 minute meals. It also has in quite a few recipes hard to find or expensive ingredients. Although, if you are a creative cook or live near quality stores it shouldn't be too big of problem. When I bought this book, I bought another at the same time for my sister.
Good luck - these aren't easy.......2007-01-09
Great inspiration in the recipes, but many of them have ingredients you'll have to work hard to find, or have more complicated processes involved (like smoking something) that simply make this book too difficult for the regular home cook. I got it as a gift and started looking through it excited to make some of the dishes, but then when I got to reading the ingredients in detail I started giving up and turning the next one. And then the next one, and the one after that. Halfway through I think I got maybe 2 or 3 things I'd be able to do without spending a fortune just to make one meal. We aren't in the restaurant business, the authors jobs should be to set up a recipe to be made at home. Even in the intro they say that they don't typically even write these things down, but just wing it through inspiration. From this it doesn't surprise me that some people say that some recipes just don't work.
Disappointing.......2006-04-17
This is one of the most expensive cookbooks I have (and I also have Millenium). I love cooking and will do whatever it takes to make great dishes. However, when the recipes don't turn out, it's not worth my time or effort. I have found this to be the case with Artful. Two recipes completely did not work, even though I followed the directions exactly.
I will try a few more and write an update if I come across some decent recipes, but I can't help but wonder if these were even tested.
Either know how or learn fast!.......2006-03-07
This is the book that answers all those redundant questions us vegans have to endure constantly! "So what do you eat? Don't you miss meat or cheeseburgers?" The general public has no idea how much money, effort and time THEY actually spend eating meat/dairy foods and/or how actually redundant THEIR diets really are. Not to mention the detriment to the health of not only their bodies, but our enviornment! I don't want to soap box here, but I see these same people make food such an occasion in every sence, but instead of shopping the farmers markets, hunting down the most exotic and freshest of produce... or hitting your local wholefoods market to experience a more fresh approach to groceries, I see these same people eating at every gas station, 7-11 or some curious looking stranger at a food cart! Either know or get passionate about knowing, it's going in your mouth, in your bloodstream and through every vital organ, intestine and exit pathway! Shouln't it be of the highest quality???
Excellent!.......2005-04-27
An excellent cookbook. Some of the recipies are time consuming -- but absolutely worth the effort. The ginger cookies, german chocolate cake, "oyster" appetizer are just a few of my favorites. NOT a Monday night, its 6 pm, what are we going to have for dinner book - but perfect for special occasions. Note, some of the ingredients can only be found in asian grocers - not a problem here in Hawaii, but may be for you. Also, some desserts rely on cocoa butter - which I can only get by mail order. YUM!

April Frost philosophizes that the key to successful dog training lies in establishing a spiritual and psychological connection between dog and human. Like the Monks of New Skete, the widely respected authors of The Art of Raising a Puppy and How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend, Frost endorses "love and respect" for a dog and treating each one as a unique individual. Beyond Obedience is not structured with day-to-day accomplishment deadlines or strict training goals in mind. Instead, the emphasis is on the individual dog, who will grow and develop at his own rate. Every chapter aims to enhance the human-canine bond. Topics include the mind and energy connection, how dogs can teach us as human beings, and new ways to improve communication. The book also offers alternatives to traditional veterinary care as more and more pet owners look for less chemically harsh ways to treat animals. Herbal remedies for carsickness, soiling problems, and stress are a taste of these natural substitutes. Beyond Obedience is much more than a dog-training guide--it is a new way of viewing our relationships with our dogs. --Naomi Gesinger
Book Description
Beyond Obedience is a revolutionary new training program for you and your dog from one of our country's foremost animal advocates and holistic practitioners. The idea that your canine companion is a fully emotional being and acutely sensitive to your changing feelings and moods is the foundation of April Frost's original and highly effective training program.
One of the most difficult aspects of training a dog is clearly communicating your intentions.
Beyond Obedience is the first book to work on the way you communicate with your dog, providing you with the necessary tools to truly understand how your dog's mind works and, therefore, how you can create an effective and mutually satisfying relationship.
Drawing on her extensive experiences as an animal behaviorist, Frost teaches you that training your dog should not be a tedious chore limited to exerting physical and psychological control over an animal's drives, but instead an enriching and spiritually fulfilling experience--gratifying for both human and animal. Frost discusses such essential concepts as mutual respect, unconditional love, mental and emotional discipline, and your expectations and priorities. She shows you how the insights gained from working with your dog can have positive, far-ranging effects on many areas of your life.
Beyond Obedience offers valuable insight into the emotional bonds that enrich the lives of animals and their companions.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting? Useful, No.......2007-09-15
If you're interested in New Age philosophy as it pertains to dogs, this is your cup of Chamomille tea. If you're interested in practical solutions to dog behavioral problems look elsewhere. I'd stongly advise you to take the book out of the library and read it before you buy it.
I found it useless in addressing my/my dog's "issues".
And, hey, I've meditated for years.
One-ness.......2006-10-22
A dog training manual for the metaphysician in everyone: you will love this book. Since you are reading these reviews, this book is for you. (When the student is ready...)
If nothing more, read Chapter 4. It relates Ms Frost's extraordinary and inspiring experience with the "Vermont dogs." I am still moved and thrilled after many readings of this astonishing account.
Try her unique methods. My puppy was frightened of passing traffic on our street. I visualized my puppy walking calming on his leash. We went for a walk right away, and he was hugely improved over the day before. Amazing! He's grown now and walks quietly beside me OFF-LEASH.
Excellent suggestions on training and communicating.......2005-01-07
April Frost is an animal communicator who comes from a place of deep love and respect for animals. She relates to each as an individual, and works with each by communicating and explaining - as well as using the clear and consistent behavioral approaches common to animal trainers. She advises people to explore what is right in their unique relationship with their animal companions, taking into account their own personality and that of their animal.
Frost has excellent suggestions and discussion on basics of training for the habits that will enable dogs and people to get along comfortably together.
In addition to offering training to people and animals, Frost has dedicated much of her life to helping animals in need. She describes a remarkable rescue of 13 malnourished dogs out of larger pack that had run wild all of its life in a pen, never having known a positive relationship with humans. The dogs were wounded physically and scarred emotionally. Her approaches in healing them are an inspiration to animal lovers.
Frost brings us great wisdom in this book, suggesting many ways in which we can learn to appreciate and care for the animals we choose or who choose us as companions in this great adventure we call life. Dogs are very much in the present, and can help us find our own sense of the now that opens into spiritual awareness.
Talking to your animal mentally, explaining the messages you want to convey, is very potent in training them to understand ways of behaving that will help the two of you get along well. Establishing intuitive and psychic communications with animals also provides another avenue for opening into spiritual dimensions.
Understanding your dog.......2002-08-22
This book provides an excellent option to conventional dog training. April Frost shares her tremendous wisdom in this wonderful book that is a must read for those of us who want to build a different relationship with the dogs in our lives other than that offered by traditional obedience training. Frost offers guideance on how to build a strong and lasting relationship with our companions that is based on mutual respect, love, and understanding.
Opened my eyes on lots of canine behavior.......2002-05-01
This was a remarkable book. I had to go out a buy a copy for reference. I keep going back to it. April Frost helped me help rescued dogs using her gentle, holistic methods. I learned so many new things from her and her stories of behavior modification with loving patience made me use my brain instead of harshness with dogs. There are no other books out there like this. I've looked. Read it and you won't regret it.

The musings of a highly intelligent mind.......2000-09-09
Susan Cooper is probably best known for writing the superb Dark Is Rising sequence of five children's novels, one of which garnered the Newbery Medal and another a Newbery Honor. This book, however, is not fiction but about fiction, at least primarily. The essays and speeches contained here discuss experiences from Cooper's own childhood (in World War II England), the piercing nostalgia brought on by finding a new copy of a long-beloved though mostly-forgotten storybook, the author's experiences with the theater (and friendship with Jessica Tandy), and many other topics. The tone is often introspective, but never arrogant, and the book can be read in segments or in a single sitting. Definitely worthwhile for anyone with the slightest interest in children's literature . . . there is far more here than one might expect.
