What novelist T. Jefferson Parker does so well in Where Serpents Lie (and in such previous high-octane outings as Laguna Heat and Pacific Beat) is to bind his characters tightly to the territory in which they live and die--the mostly scorched and urbanized but occasionally still pristine turf of Southern California's Orange County. When he's not running the Crimes Against Youth unit at the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Terry Naughton sits in a cave in Laguna Canyon, drinking tequila, smoking cigars, and trying to understand the twisted mind of a particularly vicious child molester called The Horridus. The serpents of the title are real, as is the terror Parker manages to evoke with the intense power of his writing. "I knew that there was no way that Lauren would ever have her childhood replaced with a better one," Naughton says about a 9- year-old girl sold for sex by her parents. "Lauren had the resigned eyes and the aura of passive invincibility found in nearly all children who have escaped to the last place they can go--to the private, silent cave of their own selves."

4 out of 5 stars Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.......2006-11-26

A previous reviewer wrote, "Please don't waste your time or money on this one."

Re the latter, I use the local library exclusively for my books. Re the former, It was not a waste of time. It was a good read as were several other of Parker's books. Not a disappoint at all, not even close.

5 out of 5 stars This guy is good!.......2006-08-01

I had earlier stumbled across another novel by Parker--"The Fallen"--about a detective who had synesthesia, the ability to see peoples' voices as colored shapes. I was intrigued by the premise of that story and how well written it was, so I picked up "Where Serpents Lie". Parker's protagonist in this story is Terry Naughton, who not only has to contend with the monstrous but memorable villain, Horridus, but also cope with his inner demons. Parker is an elegant writer who can really turn a phrase. This is a mesmerizing, gripping tale, replete with vivid imagery.

5 out of 5 stars Darker Parker.............2004-04-07

I first discovered T. Jefferson Parker in Silent Joe, a carefully crafted and intriguing story with a twist. Joe, a sweet man with a damaged face, is one of Parker's great heroes. Naughton, in Where Serpents Lie, is another. He's a self-acknowledged flawed character who lives with regret and sorrow and deception while struggling to do his job as head of the Crimes Against Youth division of the Orange County Sheriff's Office. I liked him immensely, perhaps because he is flawed enough to be real. The crimes against children which he investigates make your hair stand on end, partly because you know they really happen. But Parker appears to have done his research and presents the cases and circumstances with compassion while creating a villain who is both monstrous and yet sympathetic. This is an exciting if long read, maybe a trifle overwritten. The novel contains one glaring error that no other reviewer has commented on, so I will. After Naughton sees photos of himself that he knows are doctored, he goes to a friend and asks the friend to doctor some photos himself, of a woman bathing a child, a woman and child who have never actually met. Apparently, Naughton means to use this doctored photo as proof that the photos which resulted in his suspension from CAY were also doctored. As readers we get on board with this idea and wait to see what happens. But we wait in vain, for this entire plot line and the requested doctored photo is never heard of again. The photo never materializes and the friend is never again mentioned. It's an editor's job to catch these things so I blame him or her more than Parker himself for this big ooops. Other than that, Serpent is another winner in the Parker ouevre. I put Parker in the company of Dennis Lehane, James W. Hall, and Carl Hiassen--all gifted writers and good storytellers.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent read.......2003-08-27

This was my first experience with this author, and I would recommend this book to everyone. It took me a full 2 weeks to finish, because I found myself not so engrossed in the story through the middle of the book. The final chapters of the book though kept me wanting to find out more. There were plot twists that were unforseeable, to me anyway. I was stupified a couple of times. The characters in this story were believable, although not memorable. Donna Mason, the main character's "mistress" was too supportive, it made me wonder if there was something she was hiding. Come on, no one is that nice!
Over all I give this book a thumbs up and will put it on my to-read-again list.

5 out of 5 stars Where serpents lie.......2003-04-02

This is the 2nd book I read from this author and it was pretty much wat I expected. A terrific read. This book is about a child molestor who call's himself The Horridus. The whole book is a cat and mouse game between The Horridus and CAY (crimes agains youth) unit. I like the way this book is written and how Jefferson Parker writes. The environment and the places are described well so you can really get into the book and relax now and then. 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars This is great material........1998-09-17

Although this title's artwork is a bit less intricate than Masamune Shirow's latest material, this is still great, classic manga in his unmistakable and beautiful style. He always manages to write great stories, despite whatever mediocre "super hero fantasy" comes out all the time in the comics world; also, his watercolored and airbrushed covers are very beautiful {as well as his girls}. Appleseed's story concerns a totally sterilized society in which all is perfect... but can humanity survive in such an environment? This futuristic society is the Utopia mankind has always sought, but can humanity "live" in a world where everything is provided for you, and where the difference between androids and people is becoming more and more blurred? Humanity's rebellion begins...

                    5 out of 5 stars Appleseed is a far-future cyberpunk, adventure........1998-05-01

Appleseed is one of the best manga series out there today. With its hard-core action, placed in a future of chaos and technological shock. Deunnan Knute and her cyborg lover, Briarios, are placed in a new utopiac world. But, they soon come to realize that there are incredible secrets and corruptions hidden in their midst. A great book for all manga fans! Masamune Shirow delivers the best, again.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent "Gift Book" that is indeed inspirational and heartwarming .......2006-12-12

This is the perfect collection for teenage, horse-crazy girls, and reminds me of the Horse Stories I gobbled up as a kid.

It's a collection of true stories, apparently from people all over the country, each told to a writer and then edited together into this collection. Some are better than others, but they all remind us of how noble, perceptive and kind horses can be when they become partners with their owners instead of beasts of burden.

                    1 out of 5 stars Horse Miracles.......2006-02-08

This book is plagued with plagerism of already published stories. Most of the details regarding the stories about Ruffian and Secretariat are inaccurate, and they called Riva Ridge, "River Ridge". Very, very, very poorly researched and written. I do not advise anyone to buy this book. I was very disgusted with it. Also, they mention several times that horses are often sold for dog food, and apparently they did NO research on this little fact, HORSES HAVEN"T been used in dog food for nearly 30 years!!!! Perhaps they were trying to cover up for the slaughter industry which buys and slaughters horses for human consumption overseas. I couldn't even finish the book, I didn't trust any of the content as truthful.

5 out of 5 stars Charming! Inspirational ! 'neigh' other way to describe it.......2004-06-14

As a rider and having owned a horse I was so pleased to discover "HORSE MIRACLES". Brad Steiger and Sherry Hansen Steiger's newest delightful collection of true horse tales is an absolute lovely tribute to a long overlooked subject. It easily demonstrates the most noble and important role that horses can miraculously play in the lives of humans. I'm sure that every horse owner can identify with the Steiger's newest book. And if you have never owned a horse it gives a wonderful insight into the oft times ignored talents and sensitivity of these noble creatures. I've enjoyed all of the Steiger storys about other animal miracles but "HORSE MIRACLES" is just especially outstanding! I just could not put it down. And, as usual it is told through the Steigers own special and creative way of writing that lets you, as the reader 'see' and 'feel' the action in each story as it happens.
Does it get any better than Brad Steiger and Sherry Hanson Steiger's "Horse Miracles"? ...'neigh'...Charming and wonderful
is the only way I know to describe their newest book!!!...I will read it over and over as it is highly inspirational! I plan to be sure to use "HORSE MIRACLES" as a top gift consideration to friends and absolutely recommend it as an outstanding book for any member of the family individually or to read aloud from on family night.

                    4 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-10-01

I love tools, especially old tools and I found this book to be a treasure trove of information. As the title claims, it is a museum. For every tool there are one or two drawings and a short blurb on the tools were used and made - frequently I want more detail than this, but it is a starting place, just as any museum. For the price, this book is a good value for any lover of old tools.

Eric Sloane doing what he does best. The illustrations are superb as usual and so are the descriptions of how the tools were used. This book is bound to make you think differently the next time you are at a yard sale or fleamarket standing in front of a bunch of old rusty tools.

5 out of 5 stars Illustrated handbook of American Hand Tools.......2007-03-02

Illustrated handbook to pre-industrial American hand tools and how they were used. Emphasis on implements used on the frontier for clearing, woodworking and farming. Period of interest is colonial to civil war. Takes you from basic tools for working timber to the tools of more specialized trades, carpentry tools, coopers tools, and implements for farm jobs. Quit a few sections identifying specialized tools and their use.

If you know nothing about pre-industrial tools and were interested in knowing something about them for historical purposes or for basic identification.

Muslim men of religion are experts in the law, and every one has been trained in the law of one or another school. The Sunni schools of law are named for figures of the later eighth of early to mid-ninth centuries C.E., but the schools such as we are familiar with them from the 11th century and onwards demonstrably did not function in that fashion till the early tenth century. For one thing, we don't find commentaries on earlier works until the late ninth century and early tenth. For another, learning jurisprudence in the ninth century was virtually indistinguishable from learning hadith. One went to many teachers and learnt the opinions of earlier jurisprudents alongside hadith (which, in that century, included the opinions of Companions and Followers as well as reports of the word and deed of the Prophet). But starting with the teaching of Ibn Surayj (d. A.D. 918), al- Khallal (d. 923), and a series of Hanafi teachers ending with al-Karkhi (d. 952), we do find regular chains of teachers and students in the distinct field of jurisprudence, as well as, a little less clearly, a tradition of commentaries on earlier works of jurisprudence. If we may say the schools had founders, then Ibn Surayj, not al-Shafi`i himself, counts as the founder of the Shafi`i school, al-Khallal, not Ahmad ibn Hanbal, as the founder of the Hanbali school, and al-Karkhi, not Abu Hanifah himself, as founder of the Hanafi school. (The Maliki school probably would have died out in favor of one or more of the others if not for the accidents of geographical and political isolation in North Africa. The Zahiri and Jariri schools seem to have died out partly because they never adopted the new teaching methods.)

I think my book puts the history of the schools of law on a new evidentiary basis. We shouldn't any longer hear Abu Hanifah referred to as the founder of the Hanafi school, al- Shafi`i as the founder of the Shafi`i, &c. The book is pretty full of names and dates, though. I wrote it for someone already interes! ted in the history of Islamic law, and not as anyone's first book on the subject. Now that I think of it, I admit it's hard to think of another book on Islamic law more suitable to be somebody's introduction. Perhaps the best are the works of Joseph Schacht, Origins of Muhammadan Jurisprudence and An Introduction to Islamic Law, which remain monuments of critical scholarship even if they do need revision at points (as all scholarship must in time). Noah Ha-Mim Keller has usefully translated The Reliance of the Traveller, an actual book of Islamic law from the Middle Ages. My own introduction to Islamic law was Marshall G. S. Hodgson, The Venture of Islam (Chicago: Univ. of Chicago Press, 1973), vol. 1, which is another work that needs revision at points but is still a monument of scholarship. It may be read with profit by beginning, intermediate, and advanced students.

It's unbelievable that this book could get written, and published, much less be praised as it has been in some circles. It re-invents a dark and violent chapter of the oppression of Native Americans as an altruistic summer camp experience. For an incredible, in depth review, check out: http://www.oyate.org/books-to-avoid/myHeart.html. Avoid this book, except to speak out against it.

Having recently read this book for a class I was appalled and astonished at its historical inaccuracies. Although billed as 'historical fiction' it is just fiction. Other than the name of the school and the names lifted off of headstones, there is no history here. It should not be treated as anything but fiction. See the following website for more details. [...]

4 out of 5 stars Nannie Little Roses Story.......2005-12-15

The setting of this story took place at a school named Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania in the late 1800's.
The conflict of this book was the white men were invading the indian scools and villages, killing them and there food. The resolution was they had to move to reservations that was taken care of by the government.
Nannie Litlle Rose was best friends with Pretty Eagle. Little Rose swore she would keep the secret of Pretty Eagle going into trances. The indians believed her to be a medicine woman. When Pretty Eagle died, Little Rose wasn't allowed to go to the funeral.
I liked this book because it taught me about how the indians lived back then. I think I would have liked to leve in that time because they rode horses to go anywhere. It also taught me some history about the indians in America.

I'm a four-teen year old who really disliked this book because alot of things are just made up. On page 32, Nannie's mother asks, "What will you learn? To be more silly than you are?" Lakota Children where treated with alot more respect then that. Then another thing when Belle Rain Water gave Nannie a prayer stick, A hopi child wouldn't give a Lakota child a prayer stick! Sacred objects like these were/are not things children have or share. Just one of Ann Rinaldi made up things. And alot more botherd me while I read the rest of the book.

                                          2 out of 5 stars Right........2005-07-20

I liked the book at the beginning, but when I started to study more about Indians I thought it was really disrespectful. The Lakota Indians really didn't like the word 'Sioux' at all. I think that if Ann Rinaldi studied alot more about the Lakota indians she would have made this book much better.

                                          Book Description

When it was first published in 1928, Luther Standing Bear's autobiographical account of his tribe and tribesmen was hailed by Van Wyck Brooks as “one of the most engaging and veracious we have ever had.” It remains a landmark in Indian literature, among the first books about Indians written from the Indian point of view by an Indian.

Born in the 1860s, the son of a Lakota chief, Standing Bear was in the first class at Carlisle Indian School, witnessed the Ghost Dance uprising from the Pine Ridge Reservation, toured Europe with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, and devoted his later years to the Indian rights movement of the 1920s and 1930s.

5 out of 5 stars Indian Freedom Into White Man's Utilitarianism.......2004-08-09

                                          .
I found this book being both an honest account and a more accurate description of the Indian-American experience, as it comes from a man who was both Indian and personally lived through the trials and hardships through the Sioux tribe.

What is so interesting about the story is the naïve attribute of Luther Standing Bear and his honest, open and yet hold fast integrity. His trusting nature was so evident through out the story and yet he did not lack any intelligence and understanding. Of course those Indians with such nature were taken advantage of, and yet Luther Standing Bear remains always optimistic. There were many hardships, as in the loss of his free world and native life to a utilitarian white man's world of hustle and capitalism.

First there was much land taken and much sold with fraudulent treaties with government subsidiaries supplied, but it was the White's destruction of natural resources, the loss of the Buffalo and available food that caused the Indian's independence to wain and turn to the White man's society. This in turn set them up for what came next:

"Then like a thunderbolt from a clear sky came on order from the Interior Department that all rations and annuity goods which had been issued to all able-bodied Indians were to be cut off unless the Indians were willing to work for them."

This both took many Indians away from their homes to labor and in Luther Standing Bear's case, three jobs he took to support himself. The John Stuart Mill version of democracy, it's utilitarian enforcement of productivity is now forced on the Indian culture, a people whose land and free paced life was removed from them.

Luther relates how many whites took advantage of the non-English speaking Indians signing fraudulent land selling agreements, including a few unscrupulous Indians as Spotted Tail, who did the selling. There was also mentioned his experience of observing those Indians who were promised to be brought to Washington to speak to the government, but were being unknowingly used as city stop side shows, with tickets sales to the white men's advantage.

There were also the innocent killing of many Indians, the force of White man's culture, including the clothes, the cutting of hair, the religious teachings, the restriction against using his native tongue, and yet in Luther Standing Bear considered it bravery and wisdom to adopt the white man's ways and learn as much as he can to prove to the world that the Indians were both capable and good at living and producing just as the white men. His attendance at the Carlyle School, his relations and actions towards those in charge were so admirable.

The was also the death of two of his children, the event of a terrible train crash, events that would leave a horrendous impact on any person, and this man, Luther Standing Bear, maintains a strength of internal character that is most impeccable of a high and honorable nature. Not many persons would have remained so, and there is no complaining from him here, no venting, only stating his objective observances of both positive and negative occurrences and his subjective opinions written in such fair assessments.

Luther also relates how his people missed a few chances to better their predicament with the government as in Buffalo Bill's attempt to speak to the president in behalf of them and another occurrence where an agent influenced many to protect his own monetary interests.

Between Luther and his father, they understood the white man's invasion of the Indian world was "thick" and it was in wisdom to adopt their ways in order to survive. The major drawback from all this was the adoption also meant assimilation, as the dress, the religion and the language of the Indian was discouraged by the white man to be beneath his culture as inferior.

And yet all of the above was not meant as partisan to negativity, but rather, Luther was always optimistic, anxious to please his instructors and employers, admirable in is his constant desire to please the people he worked with, Captain Pratt in the Carlyle School, his employer at the Department Store, Buffalo Bill and many others. And for this he was very well liked, including by myself.
