Book Description

It was better than a hotel, this anonymous room on a secluded side street of a small country town. No register to sign, no questions asked, and for five bucks a man could have three hours of undisturbed, illicit lovemaking.

Then one evening a man with a knife turned the love nest into a death chamber. The carpet was soaked with blood -- but where was the corpse?

Meanwhile, a beautiful, promiscuous woman is missing -- along with the bundle of cash she'd had in her pocket. The truth behind it all will keep even veteran mystery fans guessing through the very last page.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Early Wexford Book.......2006-08-08

I'm a huge fan of Ruth Rendell no matter what she writes, so I am catching up with some Chief Inspector Wexford books that I have missed. This is an early one in the sereies, but it's a good one. No one does studies in human psychology like Ms. Rendell, and this book delves into the mind of a young and up and coming police officer, and the demons he fights when love interferes with an investigation. A girl has disappeared and Wexford, Burden and Drayton are trying to determine whether or not a murder has been committed even though there's no body. What they do uncover is a household full of some secrets and we know these secrets inexorably will affect young Drayton before the case is solved. Excellent story as well as a mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning.......2003-08-07

Anita Margolis, young, beautiful, carefree, has vanished into thin air. She left her home to attend a party one wet evening, but has not been seen since. She is reported missing soon after by her brother, whom she shared a flat with, the acclaimed but eccentric artist Rupert Margolis. Inspector Burden quickly forms an impression of a wanton young girl simply gone off somewhere with a boyfriend having neglected to let anyone know. After all, she was that sort of woman, in Burden's opinion. However, Wexford has his doubts, and those doubts will soon be confirmed, and they will soon find themselves enmeshed in a case that will throw every assumption they make into doubt.

This is an early Wexford book, and it is brilliant. A simple notion, but true. One of the best of the entire series, actually, the fact of its quality equally matches that of the novels she is still producing and marks her out clearly as possibly the most reliable and captivating novelist of her generation, such is her constant unfailing ability. She writes absolutely brilliantly, with an emotional detachedness that makes it so much more powerful when she decides that now is the time to probe in the darkness of a particular characters mind and motivations. And those characters are unendingly fascinating, completely human yet with a shadowy darkness to them, and flawlessly depicted.

But it is not just her characters that mark her books out as special. Setting and story meld in equally with character in the most successful books to create a compelling whole, and Rendell accomplishes this with ease. The fictional Kingsmarkham is almost as tangible and atmospheric as the London she uses as the setting for some of her other non-Wexford novels. The reader feels they could easily be supplanted into the story, onto the streets of this fictional town, and yet already know its environs intimately.

And then, of course, the story too is near-perfect. It is dark, it is clever, it is affecting, it is psychologically acute, it is realistic (despite the false idea that these kind of traditional procedural novels tend not to be), it is engrossing, as well as being a plethora of other laudable adjectives as well. It shifts and moves and surprises and has excellent pace, carrying the reader through on a breathless ride - secured in by the mesmeric hand-at-your-throat grip of the prose - until a tension-filled conclusion, which leaves more than one character irredeemably altered for life.

Wolf to the Slaughter is simply yet another excellent novel from the woman who is, in my mind, the best writer in the world today. And that is all there is to it.

4 out of 5 stars Affecting and tautly-plotted mystery.......2001-01-12

Ruth Rendell is a talented writer, but I often have problems with elements of her plots being a little bit predictable-- this is definitely not the case with _Wolf to the Slaughter_. The book constantly suprises and manages to do so without any deus ex machina tricks that might make it unconvincing.

A mysterious note that claims someone was murdered, a stain on a carpet that may or may not be blood, and a gold lighter with a leading inscription-- these are the only clues that Wexford and his crew have to what might not even be a crime. Mix in a slightly mad painter, three women who gave their hearts unwisely, and a young policeman in love for the first time and you've got a compelling mystery novel which is one of the best Rendells I've read to date.

5 out of 5 stars Rendell cements her reputation with this one!.......2001-01-04

Ruth Rendell's Chief Inspector Wexford mysteries are important entries to the police procedural genre. This, the second of the series, is probably the book that cemented Rendell's decision to continue. The daughter of local artist Rupert Margolis hasn't been home in a few days, but her father isn't reporting her disappearance. No, instead, he is filling out inquirings for someone to help him manage his household in his daughter's stead! And then Wexford receives a note that says daughter Ann has been murdered, and the suspects name given. With his ever-present second in command Mike Burden, Wexford begins his investigation, characterized by methodical thinking and well-paced moving! The plot becomes ever so convoluted--but don't give up. Rendell is in complete charge (it's one of her longer Wexfords) and by the conclusion her logial thinking, clever plot execution, and expert character development have won the day.

"Wolf to the Slaughter" is also perhaps one of Rendell's most suspense-filled books (of the Wexford series). A local hotel has been letting one of its rooms as a love nest, but when a man with a knife one evening gets through with it, it is a room of blood, violence, and death. But whose? There's no corpse to be found! Wexford and Burden take over and the pages turn automatically after this, as Rendell's heros leave no stone unturned--nor sheet unfurled! Rendell has published many other books that are not in the series (she also writes under the name of Barbara Vine) and, with each, she clearly knows what she's writing about--she's a master here. And the surprise ending is handled masterly, too! (Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)

4 out of 5 stars An Early Chief Inspector Wexford Mystery.......2000-04-05

Fans of Ruth Rendell who await each new Chief Inspector Wexford mystery from Ruth Rendell may wish to go back to her early works. Wolf to the Slaughter was her second Wexford mystery, written 33 years ago but with no loss of appeal for today's readers. Unworldly artist Rupert Margolis goes to the Kingsmarkham police, not to report that his younger sister Ann is missing, but to seek help finding someone to manage his household since Ann hasn't come home for several days. At the same time, Wexford receives an anonymous note reporting that a young woman named Ann was murdered by a small dark young man named Geoff Smith.

The book has the elements we have come to appreciate in Ruth Rendell mysteries, including the slow steady unraveling of the mystery by Wexford and his chief assistant Mike Burden, methodically tracking down the few leads, when they don't even have the victim's body; and an array of real human characters, such as the aging Ruby Branch, who supports the man she loves, Monkey Matthews, an ex-con well known to the Kingsmarkham police, by renting out a room for the evening no questions asked; Noreen Anstey, abandoned by her second husband, now regretting the wrong she did to her first, living alone and having to sell off her remaining valuables; and Mark Drayton, the young police officer who never lets himself get seriously involved with any young women while he works hard to advance in the police force. It's Wexford's and Burden's keen understanding of human nature that helps put the pieces of this mystery together and leads them to the victim and the killer. The two play off each other well: Burden coming up with an important insight into the identity of the predator in the case, and Wexford pulling the sequence of events all together in a surprise finish.

5 out of 5 stars A vital part of the GURPS Library.......2002-09-15

This book contains a large number of the spells in the GURPS gaming system, and plenty of rules and ideas for creative magic use. The sheer number and variety of spells explained in this book is mind-boggling. As some others have said, the GURPS magic system is not as overwhelmingly powerful as the magic of some other gaming lines, but it is well thought out. The spells are quite versitile, and almost every spell can be cast at varying levels of power, for varying cost. This enables you some control the range of damage/effects produced, and enables the tailoring of spells to certain situations. Some of the more powerful spells are tools of amazing power, if you can cast them. Don't ignore the "lesser" spells either. Just keep in mind that with enough creativity any spell can be magnificently effective, especially if your campaign involves a high level of realism. This book is a must for anybody who wants to use GURPS magic.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting take on magic.......2000-11-24

There are a lot of quirky things about this magic system, and I would have done much of it differently. For example, I think a lot of the spell durations are just too short. For example, if you want to disguise yourself with an illusion, you have to pay fatigue every minute to keep it going. A fairly simple and not too powerful effect, but only the mightiest of mages are mages can disguise themselves for more than 5-10 minutes.

Magic in combat is kind of weird; it's slow, which is a dangerous combination with the large distance penatlies to skill (-1 per yard), because it means for many spells you have to stand close to your target and hope they don't whack you when your concentrating. In practice, I find that magic is most useful for setting up defense and augmenting offense before battle, but once battle is joined it is less useful. Some of the spells are awesomely powerful. Some of them cost so much fatigue that it is difficult to see how you would ever use them.

Overall, I would say that the system works though. It is kind of fun learning to work the system to be able to do what you want. Despite the limitations mentioned above, magic in this system is a valuable and powerful force.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, flexible, but Generic.......2000-08-08

GURPS Magic is a RPG magic system designed to fit seamlessly into the Generic Universal Role Playing System, and as such it is extremely successful. Magic allows you to add magic using characters to any GURPS campaign easily. The system emphasizes a skill-based approach where more difficult spells can be learned only after basic spells have been learned. A character's skill with a spell determines his ability to successfully use that spell, and he can always improve his skill through study and practice. A character can cast any spell he knows, providing that he has the strength to cast that spell (the effect is tied into a "realistic" measure of fatigue), so even a beginning magician can be flexible, if not powerful. Yet also built into this system are some useful game restraints that prevent a magician from becoming overwhelmingly powerful. A useful comparison is AD&D, where a beginning magic user is absurdly weak and can cast one weak spell a day, yet at the high levels can control spells that rival a modern armored division in effect. Magic allows beginning characters to be more playable and fun to play, while prevents experienced characters from taking over the show. As in real life, this skill based approach tends to channel a character into specializing in a particular "field" of magic without the use of artificial restrictions such as "class" found in other games.

If the system has any problems, it is that it literally is to generic. While it can be used "as is", it requires a lot of work on the part of the players and game master if they want a system that closely models "historical" or fictional magic systems. If you want a game that portrays the setting of the Arabian Knights, for instance, it is not simply a matter of deleting those spells that don't fit the genre since more advanced spells that do fit might require those spells as learning prerequisites.

4 out of 5 stars More than meets the eye!.......2000-03-15

This magic system seems, at first, to be extremely weak and limiting. If you are used to AD&D (as is likely the case) it IS; however, upon closer examination you discover that it ISN'T. Sure, for a 100-point campaign a mage is very costly and, unless specialized, will be limited. That's how it would be in real life, if there were magic. Keep at it, though, and soon a mage will be the most powerful member of your party. Apply GURPS Magic to a 250 or (wow) 500 point campaign and your power will surpass even that of your meta-human cohorts. As with all GURPS products, the "real-world" rules make Magic truly enjoyable and playable. If *you* are creative then nothing is impossible (just save up the character points). GURPS is a system where you have to *think*--that's what sets it apart from all the rest. In summary, an extremeley useful sourcebook!

Steve Austin is hot and annoyed he is training another pilot to fly a mission to Skylab. The first female astronaut, no less.

Watching the operations isn't a lot of fun. "Love these new short countdowns, the old ones were like waiting for a ticket to the opera."

"You never saw an opera in your life," Goldman said.

"Not true. You made me go to one in Vienna once, remember? Damn near killed me."

He gets a hell of a surprise when taking a break and going for a walk in the nature reserve he stumbles across a family of aliens. After a telekinesis vs bionic super strength superpowered standoff, they get to talking.

Kelly Woods' mission lifts off ok, but an explosion in space injures the other astronaut, and they have to fly a shuttle mission up to operate, with some alien help, and take the surviving remaining female alien back to her mother ship, no less.

Dr. Wells gets to go along :

"You're certainly more physically fit than most astronomers. I mean, you ain't as young or good looking as Carl Sagan, but you'll do!"

It seems the visitors from Tau Ceti have been tuning in to the media. ".. would you like to know the results of the latest Test Matches?"

"God help us," Austin said. "The first visitors from another planet and they turn out to be Anglophiles."

Entertaining book, with some space geekery, and an actual detailed description of what they did when they bionicised Austin.

No more excuses for buying wine based on label design! The popular Wine Spectator magazine's massive guide covers common recent vintages as well as rare collectibles. More than 40,000 individual wine ratings--organized first by country, then by producer--are based on blind tastings by the magazine's editors. Each entry includes a rating on a 100-point scale, price information, and often a description of the wine--for example, "Wild and exotic, bursting at the seams with tons of round fruit flavors, loads of wild berry characteristics, hints of violets, earth and blueberries and well-integrated tannins to boot." The editors smartly contextualize this mass of data with an introduction to each country's wine industry, emphasizing the country's major growing regions, common grape varietals, significant geographic and climatic influences, labeling conventions, and stylistic traditions and trends.

This guide's most useful features are tables organizing the wines by overall quality or value. For example, the connoisseur will enjoy the table listing only the finest wines from the greatest vintages of the past 10 years. Any wine enthusiast will do well with the table featuring "value wines" rated 85 points or higher but costing less than $12. Another table of top-rated current releases is a veritable shopping list. With that list, no one needs to rely on pretty labels anymore. --Brendan Finucane

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable reference book for all wine drinkers/collectors.......2007-06-11

No serious wine buyer/collector should be without this. Easy to use reference guide, with ratings against multiple vintages. I have yet to find a wine not listed in here, and the only downside is that this much information does not fit in a handbag (so memory is required for restaurant ordering)!

1 out of 5 stars New format ruins what was a great book.......2005-09-26

What a shame when a new format turns what was once a fairly encyclopedic wine guide into a rehash of the last years reviews. Having purchased editions 5, 6, and 7 I was eagerly waiting for the release of the 8th edition. It was stunningly disappointing.

What is worse is that the first reviews on Amazon must have been for earlier editions as they still listed "Over 40,000 wines reviewed". Misleading to say the least.

I'm returning mine as defective and will not purchase it again unless they go back to the old format.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing like previous editions !.......2005-08-03

I was VERY disappointed in the 8th edition of the Ultimate Guide to Buying Wine. I had used the previous seven editions extensively, but this edition will be of limited use to me. All other editions had included four or five vintages of the various wines produced by wineries. The 8th edition has short descriptions of only one vintage of each wine released by the wineries....and that is not very current. It appears that these evaluations were lifted directly from the Wine Spectator's monthly ratings from a couple of years ago. I will not purchase this once helpful tool if this format is continued in the next edition.

1 out of 5 stars This book is abysmal.......2005-07-09

In 2000, WS published their 7th edition of the Ultimate wine buying guide. This books was too early to rate and address most of the Year 2000 Bordeaux vintage (as well as other year 2000 varietals). So one would expect that the 8th edition (published in 2004) would cover the 2000 Bordeaux wines, particularly since this vintage is widely-lauded as one of the best vintages in the last few decades. But no. The "Ultimate Guide" largely does not cover one of the best vintages of arguably the most prestigious varietal produced. This is beyond absurd.

Also this book eliminates 30,000 wines which were covered in the 7th edition. It also eliminates the relatively in-depth discussion of different wine-growing regions. It eliminates yearly summary vintage ratings. It has no index.

One can only presume that WS wants to publish one of these every year or two and make wine enthusiasts have to purchase each edition now, as apparently each edition will only address a limited number of wines.

This awful book is simply awful. Whoever made the above-referenced changes was severely misguided.

                        1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on 8th edition.......2005-01-03

I had great hopes for the 8th edition as I have used previous editions a lot. What a letdown this new edition is. A total diversion from previous editions, it only list one vintage year (the most recent one) for each wine!!! This book is a compiled list of all wines reviewed by the Wine Spectator in the last year ONLY. If that is of interest to you, go right ahead, spend your money and be happy. I would rather try to obtain an older edition if you want a reference to use as comparisons. Or/and by Parker's Wine buying guide which is far, far superior.

                        Book Description

As handsome as he is talented, the Australian Shepherd has fast become one of America's most popular dogs, and that is no surprise to those who know him. Engaging and talented, the Australian Shepherd proves exceptionally intelligent and versatile. Admired for his natural beauty, eye-catching coloration, abundant coat and boundless herding skills (from geese to bison), the Australian Shepherd requires an equally active and involved owner if he is to blossom into the spectacular companion dog he is intended to be.

This colorful introductory guide provides reliable, up-to-date information to help new owners better understand, raise and train this energetic working dog. The book covers breed history, characteristics and standard, puppy selection and care, feeding, coat care and grooming, housebreaking and basic obedience training, preventative health care and showing. In addition to an authoritative, comprehensive text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full color, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive.

4 out of 5 stars Well Organized and Presented, but Thin on Content.......2005-01-06

While many of the suggestions and explanations about this wonderful breed are consistent with other research documents I've read, I felt like there should've been more "meat" or text included on certain topics. In particular obedience training, feeding and the like.

Australian Shepherds are *extremely* intelligent dogs (far more so than most labs or retrievers for example - though I certainly love those breeds as well (and own one)). For this reason they have very specific training requirements if both owner and dog are ultimately to have a good relationship. However this book gave equally thin treatment to this topic as it does for others of less importance. I sort of get the impression the author said "well we can only dedicate x pages per topic on average" and then stuck to that, instead of allowing more pages for the really important stuff and skimming the more obvious or less critical topics.

This book *will* teach you something you didn't know most likely, but it will also leave you wanting more in-depth info. I'd give it 3.5 if I could....

Friendly Advice: while I was well aware of the breed's characteristics before buying, please DO NOT let your kids (or your own conscience) talk you into buying one of these dogs just because you've seen them catching frisbees on the beach or because they're so cute. If you do not have the time and space to dedicate to this dog every single day, you will wind up with a frustrated and destructive dog. Shepherds need to keep their minds going and their bodies going as often as possible; they are not couch potatoes like many other breeds of similar temperment and looks.

Also be sure to check your local Australian Shepherd rescue for available dogs before going to a breeder. You'd be amazed how many great dogs are out there already looking for homes. Don't contribute to the dog overbreeding problem in this country (more than 15 million dogs are euthanized every year in the US).

The definitive book for Aurora slot car collector's. I know we're still out there. I wish this book was available when I was first collecting Aurora slot cars. If you're looking for a great way to see what was available then or what you still need to add to your collection this is the way to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Solid work on Aurora.......2006-07-11

Bob does an excellent job with the history of Aurora, the vibrators, t-jets, tuff ones, etc., however, he readily admits that his first love is the pre-AFX (1971) aurora cars, and this shows itself in the book. The AFX section of the book has numerous errors in the descriptions of car variations. For instance, it is often very hard to correlate the description with the cars pictured. Furthermore, there are variations that are simply missing from the guide like the Translucent Lime Dodge Street Van. Another problem, is the handling of "Chrome stripped" cars. The guide dis-includes these modified cars for some models, but he shows Chrome-stripped Nomads as though they were originally released that way. This guide contains absolutely no valuation, other than a numbering system showing rarity. But I have found that the rarity estimates have been off as well. For instance, he catogorized the Dodge Charger Petty Promo car and the Dodge Rebel Charger as "1 Rare" when in fact these appear with great frequence on e-bay, a fact that has arbitrarily inflated the selling prices in my opinion. Other cars should be "1 Rare" but are rated #2 like the Matador Fastback stocker with the Ford sticker on it, which I have never once seen sell on e-bay.

These criticisms should not prohibit placing this book on your shelf, even if your love is for AFX and not the T-Jets. I strongly recommend that you get the book if your interest is Aurora. Just keep in mind that the AFX section could be improved upon.

                                Book Description

This spectacular collection celebrates contemporary works from 31 Maori and 15 Northwest Coast artists. Building on more than three decades of events, conferences, and artist exchanges that have introduced artists and audiences to the similarities between Maori and Northwest Coast art, Manawa explores the themes of sky, water, and land that are common to both cultures.

Featured are works from many renowned artists, including paintings by Robert Davidson and Sandy Adsett, ceramics by Manos Nathan and Wi Taepa, mixed media by Robert Jahnke and Susan Point, weaving by Isabel Rorick and Christina Wirihana, and wood sculptures by Dempsey Bob and Lyonel Grant. There are also many pieces by a new generation of exciting young artists, including wood carvings by Roi Toia, Stan Beven, and Todd Couper, mixed media by Israel Tangaroa Birch, stone sculptures by Lewis Gardiner and Christian White, and glasswork by Preston Singletary.

Alongside each work of art is a statement by the artist, providing insight into its origins, ancestry, and genealogy. Also providing context for the art is an introduction by master Maori painter, curator, and writer Darcy Nicholas, which describes the history of New Zealand's contemporary indigenous art movement. An essay by Nigel Reading and Gary Wyatt highlights the importance of cross-cultural projects and argues that they have become the single greatest influence on the evolution of aboriginal art and culture worldwide.

5 out of 5 stars Works of art give joy because they are so well made........2006-11-07

"Works of art give joy because they are so well made." This is a paraphrase of a quote from Bill Reid, the gifted Haida sculptor who led the way for today's carvers.

This book is incredible. Every carving, every piece of art is incredibly well made (as is the book itself). If you're interestd in either New Zealand (i.e. Maori) or Northwest Coast art (i.e. totem poles), you should buy this book. The pictures alone are worth it.

5 out of 5 stars A contemporary selection of works from native peoples of New Zealand and the Northwest coast.......2006-05-22

If it's a contemporary selection of works from native peoples of New Zealand and the Northwest coast which is needed, MANAWA: PACIFIC HEARTBEAT fits the bill perfectly: it presents modern Maori and Northwest Coast art, covering the history of major exposure of modern young artists to the world and including an excellent representative sampling of their achievements in striking color photos. 31 Maori and 15 Northwest Coast artists are presented to represent over three decades of works and events around the theme. The gorgeous color photos of over sixty selected pieces created especially for MANAWA make for an exceptional presentation.

                                  Book Description

In the late 1960s influential ceramist Howard Kottler (1930-1989) began to experiment with commercial decals and store-bought plates. Kottler altered the decals, often with political intent, by cutting and combining them, then adhering them to cheap white porcelain plates he purchased in bulk. Kottler's apparent rejection of the hand-made object and embrace of the conceptual over the tactile were unique among the revolutionary ceramists of the 1960s and 1970s.

Kottler's messages were often as profoundly anti-establishment as his medium. As a Viet Nam war protestor, he cut and rearranged the American flag to create Made in the U.S.A. As a gay man, he changed the couple in Grant Wood's American Gothic into identical males and turned seemingly innocuous images into sexual double entendres. He positioned his work squarely within the rich tradition of wit, irony, appropriation, and gender-bending epitomized by modernist Marcel Duchamp.

Look Alikes is the first examination of this body of work as a whole, including formal, boxed sets now in museum collections. Over sixty illustrations of the decal plates show the range of Kottler's imagery and the piquancy of his humor.

By carving, weaving, and painting their stories into ceremonial and utilitarian objects, Coast Salish artists render tangible the words and ideas that have been the architecture of this remarkable Pacific Northwest Coast culture. The Coast Salish tribes have developed a culture that was and still is shared orally, steeped in the ritual and beauty of storytelling and mythology. Infused with centuries of sacred teaching, these accounts hold the secrets to the spiritual, political, social, and economic well-being of tribal life. As a testament to their cultural resilience, increasing numbers of contemporary Coast Salish artists have embraced the new materials that "progress" has bestowed--glass, concrete, and steel - juxtaposing ancient images with modern materials.

Contemporary Coast Salish Art presents the work of twenty artists, whose work ranges from traditional forms such as basketry and weaving to modern glass sculpture. The artists featured here - including Bruce Miller, Marvin Oliver, Shaun Peterson, and Susan Point, the progenitors of this movement--perpetuate and expand their ancestors' traditions through their lifelong commitment to visually interpret and rejoice in all the manifestations of their culture.

Steven C. Brown contributes a thought-provoking review of the history of Coast Salish culture, incorporating an analysis of its formal elements while placing it in the context of the northern and southern artistic traditions of the region. Barbara Brotherton celebrates the renaissance of the Coast Salish style. Many of the artists describe, in their own words, the Native legends that have inspired their work. The result is a unique and invaluable overview of a vibrant body of work that is both innovative and grounded in tradition.

An odd twist of publishing fate once again has former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes locked with and overshadowed by the presence of Muhammad Ali; David Remnick's superb biography of the Greatest, King of the World, was published at the same time. The image of his former sparring partner--the beloved, quick, and graceful Ali--haunted Holmes throughout his career, which is too bad, because Holmes was a terrifically skilled fighter who could both box and hit. Like so many boxing stories, Holmes's begins on the wrong side of the tracks; he fights himself out and up from there. Straight-ahead, hard-working, cautious at times, and free of attending glitz, Against All Odds mirrors Holmes's style in the ring and out of it. Its strength is its candor. Holmes never could hide his emotions--or his petulance. His autobiography makes clear his respect for Ali, his hatred of Don King, and the angers that raged around his fight with Gerry Cooney. Indeed, rage is a character in itself. "It was the part of me that always scared me a little because I never completely accepted the fact that I had it in me," Holmes writes. Accept it or not, he rode it to the title, and, no small feat, held that title for seven years. --Jeff Silverman

It's a great book. I've met and spent some time with Larry in our hometown of Easton, PA and he really's done great things for the city, though he does gloss over one issue he had when he wanted them to rezone a parcel so he could create a business. He doesn't say that it was going to be a fast-food fried chicken restaurant and that city leaders thought the valuable land could be put to better use than that. Instead, he wonders if it was racial. Other than that, an excellent portrait of the difficulty in rising to the top of the boxing world. It's a real Horatio Alger type story. Phil Berger does a great job ghostwriting it for Larry.

4 out of 5 stars Good read but skips over important fights.......2006-01-28

This was a good read about an important fighter, the man who very nearly became the heavyweight champion with the best winning record.

Larry's story is interesting and while there may have been a touch of self-aggrandishment throughout, he did not overdo it. I think that he could have gone into more detail about certain fights eg vs Tyson, and he could have discussed the life of a champion outside of the ring more than he did, but these are minor quibbles while looking at the book overall.

                                          A good read.

This book is definitely an entertaining and easy read. Holmes recounts his rise and reign as heavyweight champion of the world. He shares the brutal realities of professional boxing with great humor. The stories he tells about Don King's greed and audacity are hilarious and worth the price of the book alone. However, I question how honest Holmes is about himself. He portrays himself as a good, decent man in the rough and dishonest world of professional boxing. I think this is how Holmes wants to see himself. But some of his stories are clearly false. For instance, Holmes claims that Norton tried to intimidate him before the fight by staring him down. But in the tape of the fight, it is Holmes, not Norton, who is doing the staring down. I think the book reveals that Holmes didn't want to acknowledge his own anger. Instead, Holmes wants you to believe he is the constant victim.
