Law & Order -- year 703 of the Republic.......2007-08-21
Overall:
----------
SPQR X follows well with the other 9 books in the series in terms of tone, pacing, detail and historical elements. The story is a court room drama done Roman style -- evidence is really secondary to how you work the crowd. Our juror system is not that much different when you come down to it; one would hope that the carefully gathered evidence and logic would top emotional manipulation to decide guilt or innocence.
The story moves very quickly with a dizzy amount of family lineage, Roman law subtle that is obsurce at best and baffling at best.
The character development is slight given the 5 day time frame for the events in the book. However, Julia gets a nice bit of development and does some more affection and compliments toward Decius.
Details:
--------
The compressed timeline of the events made for less investigation and more side characters giving obviously clues to Decius. The obviousness of the clues was a bit of a drawback to the book. The use of a cypher and a female code breaker was a nice touch. It added a nice element to the conspiracy part of the story.
The book seems to be setting up the next book with the transition of Caeser to Dictator...Emperor. There is a clear transition from the old Republic to the declining Empire. It seems that Decius is going to be up for some very interesting times in the near future.
The level of detail on the Roman legal system is quite impressive. However, it seems that the author is trying to impress you with the finer points of something that you have no idea how it works. There is something lost in the translation of the obviously impressive research done by John Maddox Roberts. The legal system/issues sometimes seems to impead the flow of the story / events.
The actual trial is very well written. Decius pulls a rabbit-out-of-the-hat once more.
Summary:
--------
Characters: 4 out of 5
Action: 2 out of 5 -- action is not really part of this story
Plot: 4 out of 5 -- it is hard to following the various machinations in the book. It would have been helpful to make the book a bit longer with some transitionary scenes / explaination scenes.
Overall: 4 out of 5
Realistic detail pulls the reader in.......2007-08-08
This is the tenth is the series, begun in 1990.
We follow the career of Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger, who has returned from capturing pirates in Cyprus and is flush with money from captured loot. He pays off debts, gives some to the treasury, and runs for judicial office, praetor. Campaigning seems to be going well when a complete stranger, Marcus Fulvius, accuses him of corruption and plundering during his campaign in Cyprus.
This is during the last days of the Republic, when Pompey and Julius Caesar are vying for power. The family of Decius has not taken sides in the power struggle yet, though Decius is married to Caesar's niece, Julia. When they show up for the trial the next morning, Marcus Fulvius is found dead on the steps of the basilica (court building), and Decius finds himself suddenly accused of murder by a Tribune of the People, Publius Manilius. Hermes and Decius are free to investigate, and they find out a lot in the few days they have before the murder trial.
There is a lot of enjoyment here--housebreaking and leaping from balconies; a wine-tasting clue; a very unusual gold ring with a carved sapphire and scrolls in cipher. And there is an exotic and beautiful visiting Egyptian philosopher and mathematician, Callista, to help decode them. The climactic trial, while not the sort we are used to, is riveting.
Roberts is the author of many science fiction and fantasy books as well as this acclaimed series. His glossary and explanation of Roman names and characters helps a great deal in understanding this complicated political thriller. The city and the people are realistically portrayed and the detail is just enough to flesh out the story.
This is the first I have read in the series, and I am going back to read the earlier books.
Armchair Interview agrees.
great series!.......2007-04-03
I am soooo looking forward to SPQR X! I loved all of Roberts' books, they are as good as the Davis' Falco series and WAY better than Saylor's Gordianus the Finder, or the Caesar series by Iggulden. The only serious competition for SPQR would be Simon Scarrow's Macro and Falco, but since they are soldiers, and Decius Caecilius Metellus is a Senator... it's as different as James Bond and Rambo. I can't wait to read SPQR X and I'm VERY excited to read Davis' Saturnalia! This whole week of true ancient Roman enjoyment could only be beaten by an afternoon in Maecenas' garden, or Caracalla's baths ;)Or perhaps a good fight in Vespasian's theater... Don't we ALL like the Colosseum?
Readable but "Energy" of Book Seemed "Curtailed".......2007-01-11
Happy I read it but something was missing as contrasted with other works by the author. The book is 235 pages and that restricts development of both plot and character(s), each of which seemed hurried and abbreviated.
I enjoyed this book........2006-12-21
I have read the entire series and every book is entertaining and fun. Mr. Roberts is a great storyteller who writes a book that is hard to put down. I highly recommend this book as well as the whole series. You won't be disappointed.
Book Description
Against all expectations, Krispos had won the crown of Videssos. But how long could he hope to keep head and crown together?
For trouble was brewing in every, quarter. Civil war erupted under Petronas, the late Emperor's uncle. A brilliant general and a canny politician, Petronas had a very personal score to settle against the upstart Krispos.
And even as rebel troops took the field against the untried Emperor, outland raiders swept down from the northlands in a tide of carnage. The power stemmed from foulest sorcery, and Videssos' wizards could not counter its evil curse.
Krispos reign showed every sign of being brief -- and very bloody...

Five Stars in Not Enough.......2000-08-16
The Tale of Krispos series, is actually a two book set about young Krispos, followed by a stand-alone third book about a mature Krispos and his kids. The Tale of (young) Krispos begins with "Krispos Rising", and continues seamlessly with "Krispos of Videssos". This is a classic rags to riches story, perfectly done, with the added adventure of a sword and sorcery tale. Krispos is born into the humblest of beginnings, then his life gets even worse. Just when you think things might be turning around for him, things get even worse than that. Finally he is left with nothing, and sets out to seek his own fortune in the world. You get to enjoy Krispos' rise from the very depths of the low, to the utmost pinnacle of his world, every step of the way. It is thoroughly enjoyable, not only because Krispos so richly deserves his reward, but also because his world of Videssos is a better place with him at the top.
The spellbinding detail of the world of Videssos was painstakingly developed in the author's first series, The Videssos Cycle, beginning with "The Misplaced Legion". This is a story about elements of one of Caesar's legions travelling into Rome's future of the Byzantine Empire. Only it's not the real Byzantine Empire, it's a parallel universe where magic works. Aside from that, it's Byzantium written by a Byzantine historian. In his first series, Harry Turtledove is contrasting the vigor of an expanding Roman Empire under Caesar with the decadence of the Byzantine Empire in decline. In his Tale of Krispos series, he is contrasting the industrious work ethic of the rural peasants with the jaded debauchery of the Empire's noble elite. With 1000 years of Byzantine history at his command, the author is able to richly describe detailed colorful characters, places, and events in this series, the same way he did in the first. They all ring true, because they are based (sometimes loosely) upon real historical fact. The realism of Videssos is unsurpassed.
The Tale of (young) Krispos is a must read for anyone who likes to read a gripping tale about a young man's struggle to reach the top. It is also a must read for anyone who is fascinated by the inner workings of ancient empires, particularly the Byzantine and Roman. Finally, it is a must read for anyone who likes sword and sorcery stories, because there is an evil wizard to defeat, and a barbarian invasion to turn back.
Go get them Krispos.......2000-06-25
Krispos is just a poor farm kid, or is he? The stars seem to have other ideas. As I followed Krispos from his rural and slave beginings to wearing the red boots of Avtokraor the intrigue and action was non-stop. Another Harry Turtldove must read!
INTRIGUE and ADVENTURE are the keywords here!.......1998-08-24
The story continues in book 2 with more fast-paced intrigue and adventure. This sequel is impossible to put down. So what if you miss a little sleep!

[Sci Fi Romance] *** ParaNormal Romance Reviews says: "Highland clans meet futuristic intrigue in this high-flying interstellar adventure that combines romance with science fiction. Technological exploration, family intrigue and a sweet, through-the-wringer romance are the highlights of this novel...The romance of the story is all-encompassing, reaching into even the most action-packed segments of the novel. Lachlan and Kimberly do not have an easy time of it, but their relationship is both believable and sympathetic. The cultural twist of clans and families, and the distinct technology that Gray creates for her world, are both intriguing. DARKSCAPE: THE REBEL LORD is ultimately a fulfilling and enjoyable read-a fresh taste in the futuristic genre from an author who futuristic fans should definitely keep an eye on."

pre-Culloden Scotland in outer space.......2005-06-23
In 3210 the solar system peace between the clans is fragile. Many pray that the upcoming peace conference will strengthen those wanting cooperation rather than war. However, one of the attendees, Commander Lin Jacob Rama leads an attack on Clan Douglas on Ceres. He takes Lachlan de Douglas, heir to the clan, prisoner.
Combat pilot Lieutenant Kimberly Kinsdale worries that madness is taking over her commander's mind. She fears the assault and abduction of Lachlan will lead to clan warfare. Her only hope to prevent what seems like Rama's deliberate sabotage of the peace conference is to rescue Lachlan, which she succeeds in doing though she is branded a traitor and deserter. As the two warriors try to expose a deadly conspiracy that has the planetary clans at war, they fall in love, but saving humanity remains the prime directive.
The premise behind the Darkscape tales is simply placing pre-Culloden Scotland in outer space; thus clan wars are all over the solar system and where they are not, hostilities are one incident away from exploding. Kimberly is a remarkable protagonist struggling between performing her duty by doing the ethically correct thing vs. loyalty to her superior officer and her clan by obeying orders. Her dilemma makes the early segment of the story line very appealing while the rest of the tale continues that strong ethical exciting start. For instance, Lachlan is terrific in the co-lead role as he must sacrifice his personal quest for vengeance for the better good of all the clans. Together they make quite a force though the enemy seems quite insurmountable. R. Garland Gray provides readers with a superior stimulating space opera.

PHENOMINAL ... You must read this book .......2005-03-11
First off, I just finished this book and knowing the sequel will be out in June (2005), has me chomping at the bit to read it... I also have to say that this book is worth every penny if you choose to buy it in paper format.
Before the wars started, two fathers hoping to end the tension between the clans betrothed Lachlan Douglas and Kimberly Kincade. However, when a traitor to the Douglas' throws everyone into war, the marriage contract is forgotten, as clan Douglas becomes the enemy to all the other clans.
Many years later, Kimberly is a fighter pilot on the warship Shadowkeep. Because she has doubts about the sanity of her commanding officer, Rama and his reasons for attacking a Douglas stronghold on Mars she is part of a secret resistance group trying to end the war. But it isn't until she finds the first line Douglas on the Shadowkeep close to dieing from his injuries that Kimberly decides, for the sake of ending the war to rescue Lachlan.
Lachlan cannot believe that Kimberly is willing to aide him from escaping one of the men responsible for causing the war and warning his father about the up coming attacks on their other strongholds. However, when Rama tracks them down and catches them, Kimberly again tries to aide his escape. Even though it means his own death, Lachlan steps in front of a laser blast meant for her.
Grab your seat belts people and get strapped in, because R Garland Gray has written an extraordinary futuristic novel in space! There is nothing simple about this plot line and while it's riddled with scenarios that will keep your nose glued to the book; her writing style is straightforward and easy to follow.
One of my favorite things about this book is how the Celtic heritage has evolved. For me, I love Scottish historicals and I love futuristics novels, so there couldn't be a more perfect combination than this book! The keeps built on other planets are modeled after castles from Scotland on "Ancient Earth"; and while the hero doesn't run around in a kilt, he does wear armbands etched with his families' motto. And lets not forget the Scottish brogue...it was just enough to remind you that our characters actually have a heritage (so it wasn't mentioned then dropped for the duration of the story), and not overwhelming by making you sound out your sentences because of words that are hard to pronounce.
While some of the more scientific occurrences that happen in DARKSCAPE seem like they should be far-fetched, I found them all the more interesting because, for example I've just been reading about how we (earthlings) are discussing terra-forming Mars...so the technology IS here and under discussion. I really felt like Ms Gray did some research for our future living off of Earth. Don't worry though, the science isn't overwhelming and don't get mislead, DARKSCAPE is an excellent romance, with some very passionate love scenes.
R Garland Gray has done an excellent job, I think with her character development. Someone betrayed Lachlan's family, and honestly, I was surprised by who it was. Likewise, the enemy is so well written, he is someone you can easily hate, and I found myself unable to stop reading (but not the only reason) because I needed to make sure he got his comeuppance!
If you like futuristic romances written by CJ Barry, Catherine Spangler or Linnea Sinclair, I highly recommend DARKSCAPE: THE REBEL LORD.
A must-read book.......2004-05-20

Darkscape The Rebel Lord.......2004-05-16
Mostly we read of hero's strong and masculine, but for me,new to romance novels,I found in "Darkscape The Rebel Lord",a woman to reckon with. Her strength of character, her patience, sacrifice, skill and rare beauty act as the cataylst throughout this engaging story.Kimberly ever present to mighty men of warring clans enhances every physical and intellectual motivation that is the driving force in this novel. The author takes us on a journey with all the elements I look for,surprise/mystery/conflict/passion/lust/love/and anticipation. A must read, pure entertainment, waiting for the sequel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really good recipes...and good quotes from one of my favorite characters, Forrest Gump
Bubba Gump Rules!.......2003-03-01
I bought this book for my Dad after we had a terrific experience at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant in Charleston, SC. My Dad is very ill and on oxygen, but the trip to the restaurant really perked him up. He loved the dish he had there, and the chef was kind enough to come out of the kitchen and tell Dad how to cook it! Although the book doesn't have that specific recipe, it has dozens of others just as good.
How to please a teenager!.......2001-09-27
We found this book at our local library and our teenage son immediately "locked on" to it. He loves Bubba Gump as well as the recipes in this book. He has taken such an interest in it that he has learned to cook from it. His favorite recipi is "Bubba's Beer-Batter Shrimp." He prepares it in a fondue pot and our entire family reaps the benifits. My husband and I prefer the "Shrimp and Feta Vermicelli." It adds a little adventure to cooking with shrimp. The variety of recipes in the book make it a "sure thing" for shrimp lovers.

President Clinton's Labrador Retriever is just one of 150,000 Labrador Retrievers registered each year. This is a book for pet owner, novice fancier and veteran alike. This book is part of Howell's new breed series—more color, more interesting and more useful than all the competition.

Owning a black Labb....this book assures me that I got the right breed for me......and my LAB proves the writer correct!
Quite Readable Compendium On Raising Labrador Retrievers!.......2004-03-07
I loved this book, which is no mean feat, given the fact that I am a person who's had the distinct pleasure of sharing his house and his life with as many as six Labrador retrievers at a time over the last 20 years (I now have four), I am acutely aware of the wonder and awe associated with getting such a wonderful companion can be. Yet, sadly, I am also aware of the profound ignorance many would-be labrador-people are regarding how to select, introduce, and socialize this new member of the family. In that sense, this book , along with a number of others (e.g. Richard Wolper's "Family Dog") can provide the wary would-be initate with all of the essentials on how to successfully transform that cute little puppy into a happy, obdeient, and well-integrated member of the household.
This book does offer one the expert advice one needs regarding the care and nurture of what has now become the single most popular breed in the United States, with information ranging from an impromptu history of Labrador Retrievers to such topics such as adoption options. The book also delivers to the prospective owner a wealth of facts and details regarding Labrador Retrievers. It provides essential and vital information regarding nutrition, socialization, and exercise, and offers some sage advice about how to find and select a reputable breeder. In addition, it also touches on aspects of ownerships such as common illnesses and chronic problems associated with the breed. This is a book I can heartily recommend! Enjoy!
A Good "Get to Know Me" Choice.......2004-01-21
While patently not a training manual (and it does not claim to be) this book is something you should own if you're going to bring a Lab into your life. The book has lots of historical information on the breed, breed characteristics, and health issues which any Lab owner will find interesting and helpful. The book is particularly apt for those who have yet to purchase their lab, but are interested or have committed to taking a pup from a litter. Read it before hand, cover to cover, and you'll know more about where to find a pup, how to choose it, and what to expect when you get home. Oh, and the pics are great.
You should, however, buy a separate training manual -- even if you plan to use a professional trainer (which I recommend) a training manual will help you get through those first weeks/months before obedience classes start.
My first, and so far favorite, Lab book.......2002-05-30
This book does a great job tracing the history of the breed. Since I live minutes from the waters where the Lab originated I enjoyed the accuracy of the material. Solid all-round info on a variety of topics. Great insight into our goofy, intelligent and loyal friends.
Neat book.......2002-01-17
A must for Lab lovers. Its a nice book with a lot of pics and info.

great source book.......2000-06-23
I first bought this book after seeing it reviewed in an architure/interior decorating periodical. It contains valuable, accurate information, and I recommend it as a gift for a decorator, collector, or antique lover. I just ordered another copy, as I gave the first one to a friend who is an interior designer, and who also thinks the book is excellent. It's easy to use, and its information is extremely helpful if you are shopping in New York--it saves roaming aimlessly. I wish it came in paperback so it was easier to carry with you while shopping because it is so reliable.

Excellent photography, plus information.......2001-04-03
Very stylish with excellent photography. And this book has plenty of useful information, combined with witty writing. Lots of insights... plus escapism like a large coffee table book.
Kitchen Heaven!.......2000-02-29
If you want to see the cutting edge of kitchen design this is the book for you. The scope of design that Ms. Dorrans Saeks covers is incredible; from funky-comfortable to high tech glam. I found the book a real inspiration for my own kitchen remodel.
Don't waste you money!.......1997-11-03
Another piece of pretension. There is very little in this book that the everyday working-on-a-budget person would find useful or helpful. The elevated position of the 'designer', and the negated, nay pejorative, position of the creative imput of the 'client' is much in evidence throughout the text of this book. A boutique piece of fluff. And a tree had to die for this!

Book Description
This collection of investigative reports published in major Philippine newspapers chronicles the travails and triumphs of Filipino women in the last decade of the 20th century.
Product Description
"In 1989, the World Bank funded Philippine Forestry, Fisheries and Agricultural Resource Management predicted that the country's (Philippines) remaining virgin jungles would vanish in just a few years. And the culprits were obvious: according to the Bank, seven to eight million cubic meters of wood were being extracted annually by either licensed loggers or timber poachers." The book discusses the deteriorating environment in the Philippines in all sectors on land and on the sea.
Book Description
I'll Go and Do More is the story of Annie Dodge Wauneka (1918–97), one of the best-known Navajos of all time. A daughter of the popular Navajo leader Chee Dodge, Wauneka spent most of her early years herding sheep and raising nine children. After her father's death, she entered politics and was often the only woman on the Navajo Tribal Council during the quarter century that she served. Wauneka became a forceful and articulate advocate for Indian health care, education, and other issues, working both on the reservation and in the halls of Congress to improve the lives of the Navajos.
Carolyn Niethammer draws on interviews with family and friends, speeches, and correspondence to offer an arresting and readable portrait of this complex Navajo woman. Wauneka's professional and personal triumphs and challenges—her temper was legendary—are rendered vividly, enabling readers to better appreciate the enduring accomplishments of the Navajos' Legendary Mother.
