Wonderful mysteries!.......2006-01-04
Although I liked the utterly ingenious book better, this one is still really great. Each chapter is a new mystery that you only have 5-minutes to solve. Some are a piece of cake, others are an extreme challenge. I love Law & Order, and each mystery is like new episode with a case for me to solve.

THIS IS THE ARMCHAIR DETECTIVE VOL 1, BUT ONLY INSIDE THE BOOK, IN VERY SMALL LETTERS, IS THE INFORMATION. NOW I HAVE THE SAME BOOK TWICE. ITS A SHAME THE PUBLISHER HAS TO USE THIS METHOD, AND THAT MR. WEBER ALLOWS IT.

The Rys Chronicles begin with this character-rich adventure that follows the travels of Dreibrand Veta, an ambitious warrior who seeks to rebuild his noble family’s fortune. He is the first to join the powerful rys spellcaster Shan, whose race possesses magical powers and whose Queen Onja rules many human kingdoms as their Goddess. The wickedness and tyranny of Onja disgust Shan and he desires to seize the rys throne from her. The third renegade is Miranda. After escaping from her abusive slave master, she becomes a crucial player in Shan’s bid for power. To weaken Onja, Shan raises rebellion among her human subjects and gathers allies to his cause. Shan demonstrates his magic in battle and convinces his followers that the fearsome rys Queen can be overthrown. For over two thousand years Onja has ruled, but now, not even fear of her ability to enslave souls will stop her ambitious enemies.

A Pleasant Surprise!!!.......2006-07-16
I picked up this book on the recommendation of a friend. An unknown author in the genre, I went in with no expectations. Having read Sci-Fi and Fantasy my whole life, I am familiar with the genre...what works for me and what doesn't. This story grabbed me from the very first few chapters. Falbe was able to capture the fantasy genre and make it her own. I could not put this book down and was itching for the 2nd. The story is so compelling, you feel like you are on this journey with the lead characters. There is so much action in this book and so much character development, it amazes me that more people don't know about it. I recommend this book for anyone looking for something new and exciting. You will not be disappointed!

Pure Battletech Goodness.......2000-11-20
I read this one a while ago, but all I remember about the book is how much it rocked. Lots of action, and it kept your brain thinking. If you're a Battletechie (like me), read Tactics of Duty (another great book) then you'll definately want to read this one. I'm wondering why Keith hasn't written another one yet. Right now, I can't wait for it!

Customer Reviews:
Very nice book, but competition is better........2006-01-14
`slow-cooked comfort' by noted cookbook author and cooking teacher, Lydie Marshall is an excellent little book which will probably be overlooked by everyone except Lydie Marshall fans. This is a shame, because the book teaches recipes built around slow cooking techniques which all serious amateur cooks should know. The problem is that as good as this book is, there are several recent books on this subject, which are more complete and simply better. I would wonder if this book is a lightweight offering because Ms. Marshall didn't have the time to do a more complete book or if her publisher wanted to do a small book and rely on Ms. Marshall's good name from earlier books to carry the day.
Ms. Marshall's primary subject is basically the braise and related types of dishes such as stews, casseroles, and gratins. The design of the book is to present the techniques by presenting a lot of classic recipes which use these methods. Her chapters are:
Basics with recipes for bechamel chicken stock, pastry dough, noodles, marinated prunes, breadcrumbs, and the famous French braise, Pot-au-Feu.
Beef and veal including beef stew, Belgian carbonnade of beef, beef bourguignon, chili, osso buco, and poached veal.
Lamb including braised lamb shanks; curry lamb stew, Moroccan lamb, and moussaka.
Pork including pork stew with apples, ragout of curried pork, pork roast braised in beer, pot-au-feu of pork, cassoulet, choucroute (sauerkraut) garni, and stuffed cabbage lasagna.
Poultry and Game, including chicken a la grecque, coq au vin, chicken Marengo, squab en cocotte, duck confit, and braised duck with young turnips.
Fish including daube of tuna, kedgeree, salt cod a la Florentine, oyster chowder, lobster stew, and paella.
Vegetables including creamed broccoli, braise of fennel, spinach gratin, mixed vegetable casserole, and braise of leeks in red wine.
Desserts with apple crumble, berry, crumble, apricot Clafouti, and flan with maple syrup.
One sees the names of lots of famous dishes here. The problem is that if one already owns a good selection of cookbooks, especially cookbooks covering French Bourgeoise (such as Julia Child) cooking and French Provincal (such as Elizabeth David and Paula Wolfert) cooking, you pretty much have this territory already covered by some of the greatest cookbook authors in the business.
Not only that, there is a recently published book by Molly Stevens, `All About Braising' which covers exactly the same techniques in much greater detail with what appear to be frankly somewhat better recipes. I compared the coq-au-vin recipes in the two books and found Stevens' recipe more interesting and more doable. I also compared Ms. Marshall's pot-au-feu recipe with Paula Wolfert's rendition in `The Cooking of Southwest France' and while both are excellent, Ms. Wolfert's offers a greater insight into techniques involved in the dish as is at the same time more interesting in that it is embedded in a classic book on a very interesting cuisine.
Ms. Marshall overall seems to be a very good cookbook author and teacher who happens to be in competition with a very tough bunch. Her book on Provencal cuisine, `A Passion for My Provence' is a very good little book, but almost totally overshadowed by two books on the same subject by the more famous Patricia Wells.
In spite of all that, I found insights about cooking in this book which I do not recall seeing elsewhere. So, If you are a Lydie Marshall fan or happen to own few cookbooks and want a good text on slow cooking recipes, get this inexpensive little book. If you collect cookbooks and have books which cover the same territory, you will miss little if you give this a pass.
Recommended with reservations.

Living with a greyhound.......2007-09-07
This book does give good iformation on greyhounds. However it does make it sound as though you have to be with your greyhound 24/7. In my case, my greyhound does do well with being separated from us for a few hours at a time. The bottom line is if your not a dog person willing to give your time and devotion to any dog, then a greyhound or any dog breed is not for you, and you shouldn't have a dog. All dogs need time and attention, they also need trained. You just have to remember, that although a greyhound is fully grown, when they come into your home they are like a giant puppy.
A GREAT companion to Adopting the Racing Greyhound.......2002-07-04
I think this new book edited by Cynthia Branigan and primarily distributed in England, is a great addtion to the new greyhound owner's library. It really focuses on getting to know your dog and all the positive aspects of adopting a greyhound. It doesn't bash the racing industry as so many other readers would like to see which would probably just inhibit many people from persuing adoption as they may think that the majority of these dogs are scarred for life from their experiences. Instead this book helps to share real life experiences from owners and foster parents alike. The racing pictures are definitely english, but the pictures of the dogs at liesure are from the actual owners and foster parents, it's wonderful to see how much love and compassion goes into the day to day life of a retired racer.
Being a seasoned greyhound owner myself, I would recommend this book to any new greyhound family that wants a glimpse into what the future holds for their new life with these majestic, loyal and very often comical companions.
An Excellent, Affordable Overview for Potential Adopters.......2002-06-03
I think the book "Living With A Greyhound" accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do: it describes what it is like to live with a former racing dog. I don't understand how anyone can complain that it does not go into the downside of Greyhound racing--that is not the subject of the book.
I loved reading the first-hand experiences of people who have adopted. They explained how they do such things as get them used to their cat or how they take them into nursing homes as therapy dogs. And the part written by the woman who told of how she nursed her dog through his final illness was very touching and memorable.
Cynthia Branigan edited this book, she did not write it. The last time I checked, an editor's job is to make sure the information presented is factual and readable. Of course, Living With A Greyhound is both of those things.
As for comparing this book to "The Ultimate Greyhound", again, that was edited by Mark Sullivan, not written by him. Furthermore it costs more than twice as much as "Living" does.
In short, "Living With A Greyhound" presents a potential adopter with a comprehensive, affordable glimpse into what it is like to share your life with one of these special dogs.
A TERRIFIC ADDITION.......2002-05-22
I?ve just finished "Living with a Greyhound" and think it?s a terrific addition to my greyhound library. As the title indicates it is not a guide to adopting a racing greyhound; Ms. Branigan covered that territory first and best in her classic, the appropriately titled "Adopting the Racing Greyhound".
"Living" covers just what the title says, what goes on after the adoption when the hound is part of the family. I thought the articles on greyhounds as therapy dogs, in agility trials, as lure coursers, and in many other arenas were very instructive and helpful. All were written by owners who have extensive experience in the area they discuss, and this gives them real authority and credibility.
As an aside, the same thing applies to Ms. Branigan. The fact that she has been running a greyhound adoption agency since before the first edition of "Adopting" came out in the early ?90?s gives her a wealth of experience and credibility that I don?t see matched in subsequent guides, which unlike "Living" don't cover any new ground and are basically just rehashes of her original.
"Living with a Greyhound" is very readable and its production values are great, nicely printed and bound with beautiful pictures which all seemed fresh to me. I?d recommend this to any greyhound owner or anyone else interested in the breed.

This book has so many amazing ideas. Not just quilt covers but cushions, stands and all sorts of finishing touches to make a room special. Instructions looked a little daunting when just reading them, but once I actually had fabric to play with things went very smoothly. A Very enjoyable book.

Book Description
A useful book for all experimental scientists and statisticians. Analysis of Two-way Layouts is the only book that presents a comprehensive treatment of two-way tables of measurement. The reader will be able to determine the structure of a set of data and this will provide more insight than the usual analyses with analysis of variance and covariance and tests of significance. This book determines how to analyze data in an objective way without relying upon preconceived models. To the extent that the models are used, they are based on a prior detailed examination of the data.

"The definitive biography of Ella Baker, a force behind the civil rights movement and almost every social justice movement of this century."—Gloria Steinem

"Pathbreaking. By illuminating the little-known story of how profoundly Ella Baker influenced the most radical activists of the era, Grant's graceful portrayal reveals Miss Baker's transformative impact on recent history."—Kathleen Cleaver
Customer Reviews:
Forgotten Hero.......2001-12-21
Everyone has heard of Martin Luther King, but few remember what Ella Baker did. Baker helped to develop the civil rights movement by working at the grass roots level with the NAACP and SCLC but, since she worked outside of the spotlight, she has received little credit for her accomplishments. Known to most activists of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, Baker is well-deserving of a biography and this is particularly well-written one. More information about her private life could have been included though.
Ms. Ella Baker - the heart & soul of the movement.......1998-07-16
More than any other single figure, Ella Baker represents the heart and soul of the civil rights movement at its highest and best. Starting earlier than most any other central leader, Ms. Baker was instrumental in sparking more of the major events in civil rights history than any other. Yet always working as the behind the scenes organizer and pushing others forward, particularly grassroots and youthful leaders, Ms. Baker is probably the least known outside the movement. No more important task exists than preserving her memory and Joanne Grant has done an excellent job in this important book. Even insiders will be surprised at what they'll learn in this comprehensive account. A great followup to Joanne's earlier documentary: Fundi - The Life of Ella Baker. Ms. Baker is universally revered among movement people for her wisdom, courage and acute political analysis that taught and guided thousands. Truly she was as close to a real saint as this world produces and to! ! uched her times in the most redemptive and revolutionary way.
