5 out of 5 stars Scrumptious Mysteries and Tasty Tid-Bits...Double Your Reading Pleasure.......2007-01-20

"An Unthymely Death, and other Garden Mysteries" by Susan Wittig Albert has ten of the China Bayles scrumptious mysteries to have fun with. The short stories have China and pal Ruby Wilcox sleuthing mysterious happenings in their little town of Pecan Springs, Texas. All cleverly involve some sort of herb, flower or food, as China an ex lawyer, and Ruby run the specialty shops "Thyme and Season Herbs" and "The Crystal Cave"( a new age shop) respectively, along with a joint venture, "Thyme for Tea", a lovely little tea room. These gals get sidetracked by all kinds of strange goings-on. They solve the crimes and save the day for many of the town's residents, filled with specialty gardeners and wonderful cooks.

Finding the answers to murders, thefts, missing people, and sinister plots, are all part of a day's work for these two. Even the local police turn to them for help. The stories are deliciously fun and always have spicy, quirky, and well named characters. The theme of each story always stars some herb or spice, flower or food as the main character, and often have a seasonal twist. These tasty little stories include: "An Unthymely Death", "The Khat Who Became a Hero"(China's cat is missing, and has left it's trail through the town gardens), The Rosemary Caper", "Ivy's wild, Wonderful Weeds", "Death of a Rustler", "Mustard Madness"(this was a fun story of 2 old geezers who competed every year for the best made mustard", "The Pennyroyal Plot", "A Violet Death" , "A Deadly Chocolate Valentine", and "Bloom Where You Are Planted". Each a great way to pass the time, and try to follow the clues along with China and Ruby.

There is more to this book though, then these fun, light mystery stories. The fabulous gems to be found within these pages are all the flavorful side bars and tid-bits sprinkled through the stories that Ms. Albert has included. Tantalizing recipes, used by the characters in the stories; Curry and Cardamom Cookies, Genevieve Shultz's Grilled Chicken with Rosemary-Mustard Marinade, Myra Merryweather's Rosemary and Ripe Olive Pesto and Cordially Yours: Ruby's Cranberry-Orange Cordial are just a few among them that may make your mouth water, and get you all kinds of kudos for your cooking, all using home-grown herbs, seeds, fruits, etc. You'll also find many many gardening tips, craft ideas, lore and history relating to healing herbs and dozens of other sweet ideas and natural remedies!

10 delicious stories with bonus tips on page after page....solve the crimes along with China and then enjoy some of the tasty tid-bits inside!....Enjoy.....Laurie

5 out of 5 stars A Mental Buffet!.......2006-07-05

If you love going to a buffet and choosing things that are sumptuous and delicious then you will love this China Bayles diversion. You will enjoy this book as a diversion from everything. Buy and enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW.......2006-03-11

AN UNTHYMELY DEATH is Wittig Albert's "break" from her regular China Bayles series. This is a collection of short stories that have more recipes and herboidal facts than real honed plots. Fans of the series will enjoy the little "mysteries" which range from robbery to murder, but they're not intricately plotted. Albert is wise in that regard; how many murders can a little town little Pecan Creek have? Most of the stories focus on China and Ruby with only one having McQuaid involved. For fans only.

4 out of 5 stars Hunting and Hinting, Texas Style.......2004-11-28

Susan Wittig Albert, author of the beloved China Bayles mysteries, and the often insightful "Lifescapes" blog on the internet, has given us a collection of ten short stories featuring her good humored herbalist sleuth. Pecan Springs is a small town, filled with small town folk and lots of good eating. In the ten cases assembled here, China solves the problem of who wtole the cookbook of out the Guild, and what happened to the cat, cutely named KHAT. When she does, she discovers a new member of the community, Ivy O'Toole, who is sort of a heavyset woman but one who knows a lot about herbs.

There isn't that much in the book about Mike McQuaid, China's new handsome hubby, but readers who like Mike will appreciate the glimpses we get into his private life. There is a more "adult" case about a man who feels he has been "stalked" and whose answering machine turns into a valuable clew in the mystery of the poisoned brownies. It is sort of like FATAL ATTRACTION, with a Pecan Springs twist. In addition, there are lots of little sidebars about herbs and how herbs can make your life better. As China suggests, planting a fragrance garden near your porch is a nice way to let their fragrance comfort you in times of loss or inspire you to help out a neighbor or two. She suggests planting carmint, chamomile, clove pink, lavender, lemon balm and nine more, winding up with violets (alphabetical order, but i think they'd look pretty that way). When spring comes there I'll be on my knees outside my porch, learning to live again. These tales, some of which were originally available on the internet, are here expanded and made a lot better by SWA's indefatigable storytelling flair.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for any China Bayles fan!.......2003-07-30

I have just discovered the wonderful novels by Susan Wittig Albert, and I am playing catch-up trying to read all the past installment of the China Bayles saga.
Imagine my delight upon finding this delightful collection of short stories.

I love that these stories are a great deal more light-hearted than the usual serious themes found in the book length tales. Albert features all the familiar characters from her series, including China, her best friend Ruby, police chief Shelia Dawson, and of course, China's new husband Mike McQuaid. She also brings in a few new characters that have not appeared in any previously published mysteries to join in the fun.

I also love the many herbal tips and recipes that appear sprinkled throughout the book.

For fans of Albert's series, this collection is a "must have"!

      4 out of 5 stars Andrew's Book Review.......2001-04-13

I read the book Watcher. I thaught this book was really good. The description of the book was great. I recieved a vivid picture in my head of the actions and settings from this book.

There are many great parts in this book. It is really hard to choose just one good part. But if i did pick a best part it would be where the guy first turns into the werewolf. That part was really good.

Out of all the story elements the most vivid to me where the conflict and climax. The conflict was out stood because it's obvious, there's a werewolf trying to kill people and they need to kill it. The climax was really outstood because it was about a chapter long.

2 out of 5 stars Not the worst, by far not the best........1998-12-27

The story's not bad, mediochre but ok; it's Charles Grant's writing style that's killing me. He uses the RA Salvatore 'one line paragraph' mechanic WAY too much. The over-use of this technique makes the reading jumpy and annoying to the eye. As well, the concept of the 'Watcher' organization, found in every SciFi series from Highlander to Buffy to VtM to now, my favorite world of storytelling, is getting a little old. There are thousands of stories out there for Werewolf: The Apocalypse, it's way too soon to be falling back on something that's quickly becoming cliche.

If you are interested in good WWtAp writing, check out the short story collections, When Will You Rage and, to a lesser extent, Drums Around the Fire. The only WWtAp novel that I feel falls into the inovative, entertaining, and well-worth-your-time catagories is the hard-hard-to-find, Breath Deeply. Do yourself a favor and track down a copy. It is original, is a multi-tribal and racial story, and there are wonderful scenes involving the Umbra and spirits that are rarely handled, much less handled well, in the written works.

Used as a reference by students of acupuncture, this is a hefty, truly comprehensive guide to the theory and healing power of Chinese medicine. It's also a primer on nutrition--including facts about green foods, such as spirulina and blue-green algae, and the "regeneration diets" used by cancer patients and arthritics--along with an inspiring cookbook with more than 300 mostly vegetarian, nutrient-packed recipes.

The information on Chinese medicine is useful for helping to diagnose health imbalances, especially nascent illnesses. It's smartly paired with the whole-foods program because the Chinese have attributed various health-balancing properties to foods, so you can tailor your diet to help alleviate symptoms of illness. For example, Chinese medicine dictates that someone with low energy and a pale complexion (a yin deficiency) would benefit from avoiding bitter foods and increasing "sweet" foods such as soy, black sesame seeds, parsnips, rice, and oats. (Note that the Chinese definition of sweet foods is much different from the American one!)

Pitchford says in his dedication that he hopes the reader finds "healing, awareness, and peace" from following his program. The diet is certainly acetic by American standards (no alcohol, caffeine, white flour, fried foods, or sugar, and a minimum of eggs and dairy) but the reasons he gives for avoiding these "negative energy" foods are compelling. From the adrenal damage imparted by coffee to immune dysfunction brought on by excess refined sugar, Pitchford spurs you to rethink every dietary choice and its ultimate influence on your health. Without being alarmist, he adds dietary tips for protecting yourself against the dangers of modern life, including neutralizing damage from water fluoridation (thyroid and immune-system problems may result; fluoride is a carcinogen). There's further reading on food combining, female health, heart disease, pregnancy, fasting, and weight loss. Overall, this is a wonderful book for anyone who's serious about strengthening his or her body from the inside out. --Erica Jorgensen

5 out of 5 stars A great text when understanding concepts in Chinese Medicine.......2007-10-10

I first discovered this book in the nineties when working at a large natural foods chain as a natural products specialist. Since then, I am on my way to starting naturopathic medical school, where this book is considered a text book for classes in Chinese medicine/nutrition. I have discovered, any time I open the book to a random page, there is always really good, interesting, and applicable information on the page. Even if you're not a student in alternative/holistic medicine and health, this is still a great book when wanting to know about nutritional and supplemental properties of various foods, as well as some good recipes on food combining and recipes on balancing chi or the organ systems.

5 out of 5 stars Whole Food Healing.......2007-09-01

This work integrates ancient notions of yin (coolness and saltiness) with
yang (sweetness, ascending and energy). Chronic diseases; such as, arthritis
benefit from avoidance of calcium inhibitors, coffee, too much meat/protein, alcohol, refined sugar, increased salt, avoidance of nightshade veggies i.e. tomato, potato and eggplant.

Arthritics also need to reduce wind dampness with black cohosh, devil's claw and ginger herbs. Sea veggies; such as, hijki and wakame have the highest level of calcium or 1300-1400 mg. per serving. Kelp has approximately 100 mg of calcium and dried wheatgrass has 500 mg. In addition, calcium should be taken with Vit D and an appropriate level of sunshine. Silicon in plant fiber assists in calcium metabolism.

This book would be extremely helpful in managing the nutrient load
processed by the body as a result of whole food ingestion and vitamins.

      3 out of 5 stars Hmmmm.........2007-08-18

Some wonderful pearls of wisdom. Unlike the true Chinese principles, Pitchford is very biased and towards vegetarianism pointing out the political reasons why to be a vegetarian and why "flesh" eating is so horrendous for the earth, your soul, etc. I much prefer the balanced, non-judgemental approach of Linda Prout Live in the Balance: The Ground-Breaking East-West Nutrition Program and/or Daverick Leggett Recipes for Self Healing andHelping Ourselves - truly non-biased, balanced simple in his approach, informative. The Leggett books can be ordered from http://www.meridianpress.net/ and are much less expensive than Amazon.

      5 out of 5 stars A way of Life.......2007-06-27

When you make the decision to get your health back, this book is a great start, I am amazed at how often the principles my mother employed 50 years ago pop up in this book. Beside my Mums guiding hand Mr Pitchford lays it out as it is, My thanks to him.

      5 out of 5 stars Indeed a Classic.......2007-05-12

I got this book 3 or maybe 4 years ago and I still use it for reference AND still reading it from time to time- each time learning something new. This book is like a giant sign-post pointing you to investigate deeper whatever dietary advice you might be interested in...
It is not perfect, but as compassionate and non-dogmatic (as much as a vegan-orientated book can be), I'd say it is very close.

I have had this cookbook about a month and made 7 recipes...they have all been wonderful! I can't wait to buy more Veggie Times cookbooks!

          4 out of 5 stars Great Find!.......2003-03-31

Friends introduced us to this cookbook, knowing that we eat vegetarian and follow the Mediterranean diet. What a joy!

My only problem to date (I've made 4 recipes to date - our friends an additional 3 or 4) has been a major typo in one of the recipes that left me unsure how to layer a casserole. I went with my best guess, and it was very good!

Highly recommended. Great flavors, great variety. I get tired of people saying that to not eat high-fat (especially "bad" fat) foods like burgers, fries, bacon, etc., is bland and boring and somehow to be disdained. WRONG! We eat so much better than that! and will eat even better now that we have this book.

5 out of 5 stars Vegetarian Times Cooks Mediterranean.......2000-01-27

I adore this cookbook! It is witty, fun to read, full of healthful insight and provides an excellent history not only of the regions of the Mediterranean and their culture, but how the residents of this area developed a healthy diet out of necessity. The selections are outstanding and I am enjoying this cookbook immensely. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in healthy eating, diabetics and vegetarians. I have a new found desire to live in Greece or Italy, shop at the market daily for my day's meals and work in the olive groves!

          3 out of 5 stars So - SO.......2006-11-07

This book is decent for people new to dogs in general. I'd hoped to find more info specific to staffords especially in training and dealing with common stafford problems like chewing and skin problems. There are some things inside I didn't know, so I'd still say it was worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to Staffords.......2006-02-09

This book is a wonderful introduction to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier! It provides not only a confirmation information but also a history of the breed, how to care for and train it and what types of activities are enjoyed by staffords and their owners. Quality, often large, color photos really round out this book. If you are considering a stafford, this is the first book you should purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Poor production values.......2005-02-16

I haven't read this book. I own it, but I haven't read it. The reason I haven't read it is because they chose an unfortunate font for the text of the book, a font that's too "dense" on the page. I kid you not. I admit it's a strange criticism but if reading a book is an exercise in eye strain, that's a problem. The only time it lets up is on the one page where the font inexplicably changes. And what's with the photo on the page three title page? That's an American Staffordshire Terrier, not an SBT. It has cropped ears, and its legs and neck are long. I gave it three stars because I didn't think it was fair to completely pan a book I haven't read, and the photos that are actually of SBTs are adorable

5 out of 5 stars ALL AROUND GOOD READ.......2001-03-10

A really good book well written by somebody who obviously knows the breed first hand. Whatever you would like to know about the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is here in one book. Whether you would like to show your dog or just provide the best possible care for your best friend, all of the answers are here. VERY highly recommended for either a fancier of the breed or for anybody who wishes to learn more about it.

          5 out of 5 stars Quite comprehensive.......2000-11-30

It is amazing the amount of facts to be taken in consideration when you purchase a new dog, if the SBT is on your short list, this book is a must buy, aside from the average information needed in make the decision, it is obvious the amount of time, dedication and love the author has or the breed, one of the most incredible dogs finally gets a great source of info for the beginner Staff Bull owner, alongside with great pictures, this books gives you everything you need to konw before and right after you get your Sttafordshire Bull Terrier

                        Book Description

This stunningly lavish volume is based on Pauline van Lynden's notebooks, photographs and other material gathered over fifteen years of wanderings in Rajasthan, India. The book begins with Pauline's first overwhelming impressions of color, people and places. In search of material, making friends on her way, she discovers the Rajasthani cities, is invited to a royal wedding and finds artisans devoted to their centuries-old crafts. After some time, a longing for quiet draws her to the countryside, and the second half of the book focuses on the villages and a rhythm of life which has not changed much over the centuries. The fourteen chapters of the book are each introduced by two pages of stories and descriptions by Pauline to explain, in a personal way, the following pages of photographs. The text is limited to her impressions, as the book is meant to be essentially a visual experience. With her artistic background, an upbringing in international surroundings, a curious and eclectic mind, a keen photographer's eye and a great sensitivity for detail and atmosphere, Pauline is perfectly equipped to bring her own view of Rajasthan to the public in this informed and evocative manner.

                        5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2007-04-05

When I was the in-house stylist for Style Guide I had this incredibly beautiful Indian girl with dark eyes for an intern. She wore the brightest colors to work everyday and spoke in this rich lilting voice. One day I finally asked her where she got it - "the clothes or the accent?" she asked, "Both", said I. Well, she said, the colors are from my mother's land and the accent is from my father's land. Turns out that my pretty intern's mom came from the desert state of Rajasthan, in the North Western part of India. I have since then browsed innumerable coffee table books on Rajasthan, but Pauline Van Lynden's Rajasthan is certainly a notch above the rest. The photographs are lavish, the details touching, the effect spellbinding. Royals, artisans, dressmakers, housewives - Van Lynden gives us a breathtaking glimpse into these myriad lives.

Another plus is Van Lynden's tone - always inquisitive but never condescending. There might be other books which will give you a lot of information about Rajasthan but Van Lynden's Rajasthan shall remain a front runner due to its evocative prose and dazzling photographs which seem to leap off the page. I recommend Van Lynden's Rajasthan as an antidote for any colorless day.

For decades 714 was the holiest number in baseball. When Hank Aaron began closing in on Babe Ruth's career home run record he also began receiving racist hate mail and death threats: "You are not going to break the record established by the great Babe Ruth if I can help it. My gun is watching your every black move."

In the midst of all the anger and hate, a white teenager named Sandy Tolan wrote a letter to Hank Aaron. "Don't listen to them, Mr. Aaron. We're in your corner. You're my hero. I believe in you." To his great surprise, several weeks later Tolan received a reply--from Hank Aaron himself. Tolan kept the letter, taping it into a scrapbook he was keeping to follow Aaron's home run record chase.

Twenty-five years later, Tolan, now a journalist, had the opportunity to finally meet Aaron. He recounts the meeting, and his decades-long admiration for the man in Me and Hank. No mere hagiography, Me and Hank lingers on a difficult question: Why was Hank Aaron's home run record less celebrated than Babe Ruth's? Or as Aaron himself put it in 1979, "Isn't it funny? Before I broke his record, it was the greatest of them all. Then I broke his record and suddenly the greatest record in baseball is Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak." Tolan uses Hank Aaron and the Babe's home run record as a prism through which to examine racial tensions in America--both in the 1970s and in the 1990s. Along the way he visits the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown (where Ruth has a room all his own while Aaron has "a wall and a locker"), meets Charlie Danrick, who sells audio tapes of old baseball games (the tape of number 715 "doesn't sell. It just lays there. People don't buy it."), and befriends a homeless black man from Atlanta who was in the stands on April 8, 1974 ("And when I seen him hit the ball ... it felt like he passed the civil rights bill to me.") At times angry but always thoughtful, Me and Hank provides a much-needed window into baseball, race relations, and even American history. --M. Stein

                              Book Description

When Sandy Tolan was nine years old, his hero left town. In 1965 Henry Aaron and the Milwaukee Braves moved to Atlanta, but unlike the other Milwaukee kids, Sandy continued to follow Aaron's career from afar, straining to hear the games at night through the crackle of distant AM radio stations. Aaron's heroics provided an anchor for Sandy in the turbulent late '60s and early '70s, and the young white fan felt a bond with the black superstar.

In 1973, Sandy began keeping a scrapbook to track his idol's approach to the greatest record in sports -- Babe Ruth's 714 career home runs. But he soon learned that Hank Aaron had become the target of racist hate mail and death threats. Shocked and wishing to help somehow, he wrote Aaron a letter, saying, "Don't listen to them, Mr. Aaron. You're my hero." To his astonishment, he got a letter back. "Dear Sandy," the baseball legend wrote, "Your letter of support and encouragement meant much more to me than I can adequately express in words."

Twenty-five years later, armed with his scrapbook and the old letter, Sandy Tolan went to Atlanta to meet his hero. Me and Hank is his account of baseball, heroism, race, and childhood dreams, as he taps the bittersweet recollections of the home run king and those around him. Among the people we meet are:

                            • Aaron's daughter, Gaile, who had to be placed under FBI protection for her own safety.
                            • Dusty Baker, the young teammate who saw Aaron's perseverance and quiet courage as a model to aspire to.
                            • Civil rights leader Andrew Young, who realized what Aaron meant to Atlanta as it struggled to free itself from the mindset of segregation.
                            • Felix Mantilla, who with Aaron broke the color barrier in the Deep South's Sally League in 1953.
                            • Bud Selig, the former Milwaukee car dealer and future commissioner of baseball, who brought Aaron home to finish his career.
                            • James McClain, a Vietnam veteran, now homeless, who saw Aaron as the embodiment of all that blacks could now achieve in America.

Weaving these reflections with his own, Sandy Tolan explores the landscape between a hero's aspirations and the reality of his struggle; between a young fan's wishes and their delivery, a generation later, to a middle-aged man; between the starkly different ways that whites and blacks in America experience and remember the same events. Me and Hank is a portrait of a true American hero whose example resonates far beyond the playing field.

4 out of 5 stars Very sad story of reality in America.......2004-11-13

I have to say this is the saddest baseball book that I've ever read. This book really is about the reality of sharp division between two Americas --- the main stream one that belongs to whites and another that belongs to blacks.

Being an avid Hank Aaron fan, the author Sandy Tolan does have a strong --- could even say a bit biased --- opinion about how Aaron has not been given proper credit he deserves. As an earlier review points out, he sounds angry at times, but really the whole point in the end is that racism doesn't even take active hatred like those manifested in tons of hate mail Aaron received in his quest for the homerun record. That the main stream America has had so little interest in Aaron's great feat shows the reality of human's natural tendency to unconsciously discount "others." In this sense, I don't think Tolan intended to blame the main-stream America for not giving Aaron enough respect; the white people in the States never truly understand what someone like Aaron had to go through and what he meant to those who are considered as "others" simply because they cannot experience it in today's America. And sure they don't wish to experience if given a choice. I saw much more resignation than accusation in Tolan's narrative.

It is only relieving because Tolan, who is white, does treat Aaron's achievements and deeds with such a profound respect and passion. Yet even Tolan could not break ice with Aaron, whose emotional scar has not been healed. It is too sad Aaron had to go through so many negatives for what everyone should feel happy for. But the book tells what he did really, really meant a lot for those who cared about him, and Tolan made sure that those won't be forgotten.

4 out of 5 stars Great book that could have eased up on the bitterness.......2000-08-06

Don't get me wrong -- this was a great read and a provocative book about my favorite ballplayer of all-time. But I thought Tolan was at his best describing the people who experienced Hank Aaron's home run chase firsthand (including himself) and at his worst when his personal memories shifted from fact to opinion.

The tale of his encounter with a homeless Atlanta man who attended the game where Aaron hit No. 715 is beautifully told and moving. His personal friendship with a Babe Ruth admirer ignores racism in his hometown and praises Aaron for his accomplishment illustrates how we need inner strength and conviction not to simply march in tune with those around us. Tolan's interviews with Aaron, his daughter Gaile and former teammates reveal the depth with which Aaron had to endure racism as a ballplayer, and his historical portrait of the racial tension in his hometown of Milwaukee is thorough and fascinating.

But the more Tolan discovers about how unappreciated Aaron truly is, the more preachy -- and less effective -- he becomes. He hits a low point when he grills three advertising executives on their lack of knowledge of Aaron's hardships as they prepare to pay homage to Aaron in a MasterCard commercial. Are they to be blamed for that? All of these people clearly respect Aaron, and they all interviewed Aaron in preparation for the commercial. If he'd really wanted them to know what he endured, he probably would have told them. He also takes some unnecessary shots at the Hall of Fame because they have chosen to pay tribute to Babe Ruth with an entire room, while Aaron gets only a wall. Sure, Aaron deserves a room to himself, so do Jackie Robinson, Bob Gibson, Curt Flood, and many of baseball's other African-American pioneers. They don't. Deal with it.

One need not be a walking encyclopedia of Aaron's life, as Tolan is, to appreciate his accomplishments achieved under extreme duress. Let those who appreciate Aaron for who he is -- a great ballplayer and a great man -- simply be. The irony is, I'm with Tolan on his central argument, that Aaron is one of the greatest and most underappreciated Americans in history. I'll even go far as to say you can't prove Ruth is better than Aaron, because Ruth played an all-white game and didn't necessary play against the best. But Ruth made the game popular. If not for Babe Ruth and what he did to make baseball America's pastime, Aaron's chase wouldn't have inspired the rancor that it did. People wouldn't have cared.

Sandy, let's enjoy being Hank Aaron fans by not wasting our time beating up those who don't appreciate him to the extreme degree we do.

5 out of 5 stars Must read !.......2000-06-19

Sandy Tolan did a good job interviewing many people, including Hank Aaron, to do this book. Hank Aaron is a wonderful person who deserves much more recognition for what he has done both on the field and off. The book is very well done. It makes you think.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and moving.......2000-05-07

What a wonderful book! This is a fitting tribute to a man who has been shamefully underrated in American life, as well as a probing look at race relations in the past forty-plus years, seen through the prism of baseball and Hank Aaron's breaking of Babe Ruth's record. Like the author, I grew up in Milwaukee, although I am a bit older and so I saw Hank Aaron hit many of his home runs. His dignity and grace are a precious memory of my youth. Also like the author, I wrote Hank Aaron a letter when I learned that racists were hounding him for challenging Ruth, and received an eloquent letter in reply from Mr. Aaron. This book, with its highly personal approach to the subject, is a multifaceted view of a revealing part of American life. I couldn't recommend it more highly.
