Vincent Bugliosi is not only a top-notch prosecutor & attorney, he's also a top-notch writer! This is one of THE best books I've ever read....you talk about not being able to stop reading a book. This is one of the strangest "True Crime" stories ever, and it will just blow your mind. Some nights it gave me such chills, I was afraid to get off the couch & go to bed! I was frozen with fear almost. Spooky....This crime is freaky & scary. Get this book! You won't regret it. Promise. If you love True Crime, get this book!
epic but premature.......2007-04-28
Much like Helter Skelter, Bugliosi gives a huge sense of depth to his this case. There's epochs of history, a slew of investigation, new vocabulary to learn, characters to relate to, laws to be reasoned with, etc. I usually wouldn't use the word "epic" to a true crime book, but with Bugliosi's sheer depth, the word sticks. At times the author can seem a bit self-centered, a real hot shot. In reality, he has the right to be egotistical and a hot shot!
I thought that perhaps the book was written prematurely, solely for the fact that the second body was never found and Buck never admitted to the crime. If both of those were to happen, I'd read the edited version of this book again.

This is a fast moving real life story that ended with two people missing and persumed dead. Part II of the same book is the trial and defense of one of the accused. This part goes into detail as to the defense. Very informative.

My biggest problem with the book is the cause of death as related by the authors. It is difficult to believe someone, or possibly two individuals, killed and burned two people, then put them in a box or boxes, to sink them in the lagoon. Further this was all done to steal a boat worth maybe $100k. The murderers then sailed the boat back to the Hawaiian Islands where it had left approximately a month or so prior.
I read the book during my personal sail down to Palmyra and spent a week investigating the atoll while trying to reconcile the story. I'm wondering what other readers have to say or think about this story?

This book worked me up so much, I had to write my first ever Amazon review. Before I begin, Let me qualify this revie with three important facts about myself which vastly influence my opinion of this book.
1. I am a writer
2. I am a basketball player
3. I am honest and opinionated
And with that, I must say that this book was a big disappointment. My friend recommended it to me and I was excited to read something that might capture the spirit of my friends and our games. To help with this review, I've divided my critique into sections.
THE WRITING: The writing is average and at times overdone. The author seems to be trying to overcompensate for his lack of prose through the years with needless details and average metaphors. IWriting is craft, you have to respect it and you just can't come to it as a hack and expect success and orginality. In essence, he is trying to hard to sound like a good writer. It's uneven and at times contrived sounding to me. He mentions he is looking for his voice and you can tell cause he still doesn't have one. He writes as if he is writing what he wants people to hear, not what he wants to say. Plus, as an ex-sit com writer, this thing is littered with bad, corny jokes you'd see on TV.
THE CONTENT: This book could have been a hundred pages shorter, but who pays $25 for a 178 page hardcover? It's got a lot of filler.
CLASS ANALYSIS: My biggest gripe with this book, this coming of age, mid life crisis deal is that it is so gluttonous and whiny. I am supposed to feel sorry for a guy that made bad choices for himself, sought out the Hollywood life, and then can't afford mortgage on a million dollar house with 6 bedrooms. Man, rich people with problems is not fun to read about. (I must also add that I am originally from that desert LA wasteland and cannot stand the fame/whore/entertainment industry from producers to actors to.
GENDER ANALYSIS: Now I'm not some rah-rah gender theorist or really all that up on feminism, but I really don't like the limited depiction of gender and stereotypes in this book. I do like the thing about closeness and intimacy, that was good. The rest of the man-macho crap is so lame, so Western, so American. I think this whole big truck, big gun thing is so lame here and the author seems to buy into it and just accept it. Like how it's bad to show weakness, or cry, or have feelings. Hello, we are all have female and male,we carry both traits. Only in America can we just be so limited as to have to act our full selves in secrecy, hiding, and chat rooms.
THE BASKETBALL: It was okay. For these guys, it was about the comraderie and then the game. I play for both, but the game itself is also a beautiful thing, a thing of passion and i feel like that is left unwritten and undescribed.
Basketball, the LA stories--OJ, Riots, earthquake--plus the friends stories are all filler for this mid life crisis book about a bunch of old mostly Jewish players.
The jacket description is a big hype job, and seems like the writer over-wrote that himself as well.
Oh yeah, and last, he talks about how he wants to be a "real" writer right? And then he goes and cranks out a book on NFL officials and one on Sports Talk Radio. Way to be true to yourself. He might as well have stayed in TV cause he's still writing crap, only with one name, and making less money.
And I don't buy his hustle to become a writer when he can call the LA TIMES Magazine editor up directly and get his story published in 20 minutes. That is not called hustlin, that's called "juice" or connections, or "the hook up." Please save me the baloney for my sandwiches.
There's a reason I bought this book used in harcover for $0.74.
The one thing I did like was that it encouraged me to make good choices in my life, not chase the BS, and pursue my dreams not the money, and not get stuck in financial ruts. So I am thankful for that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was very fast paced, funny and seemed to pick up momentum as it went along. Although there was not a suspenseful climax I still raced to the end to see how the book would achieve closure. The weekly basketball game served the book well. It was very interesting to read about how these guys would all gather weekly and how gradually they were able to reveal things about their lives. I admired how they truly came to care about each other and support each other.The characters were well delineated. I felt a little cheated because the author had to change their names to protect their privacy but their personalities shone through on the pages of this very enjoyable book.
Great book about male bonding.......2003-06-20
This book is an easy and quick read. It is a great book about more than just a weekly basketball game, but about male bonding in general.
I found myself laughing out loud several times during this book. Its humorous anecdotes added so much to the story. At the same time, you can relate to these men as they undergo financial hardships, marital trouble, and tragedies.
I think men and women will both enjoy this book. Men will relate to the characters and understand the draw of the basketball game. And women will learn a little about how men communicate and how their friendships grow.
You don't even have to enjoy sports to love this book... the basketball game, though told well for those who love basketball, is simply a means to an end.
Good for anyone, especially people who are considering major changes in their lives.
Get In This Game.......2003-06-17
Ten on Sunday is extremely well written. The author is a master at dialogue. His descriptions of a weekly backyard pick-up game made me wish, longingly, that I could have been one of those players. The game felt special, almost sacred. For me, it was not so much the "secret" life of men or the fact that they never really talked much. It was, instead, a man's version of dancing -- sensing a rhythm and allowing it to govern movements to silence thought and to release fantasies. The fact that the rhythm returned just as powerfully the following Sunday, made the game seem irresistible.

As the girlfriend of an avid basketball player, I have always been intriguided about how it was so important for him to go to the court to play at certain times. Reading this book gave me great insight into the game and the importance it plays. THe book was engaging and I am now able to understand the basketball phenomonon.

This is an excellant resource for both parents and teacher in promoting comprehension strategies to improve their children's reading comprehension. It is very clearly set out and easy to read. The language used is not "teacher talk" and it sets out clear guidelines.

I purchased this book in the hopes of finding something "new" to instill in my classroom teaching. I feel this book is more beneficial for parents than teachers, but both groups will find this book useful. I suppose that since my graduate studies were in the field of literacy and reading, I have already been exposed to most of what is in the book. I love that the authors end chapters with a section called "Teachers and Parents Together" and I truly hope that all who read this book will endeavor to strengthen the home-school relationship. This book is not too academic for parents without a background in education; it is reader-friendly and organized in a manner that would allow the reader to read it for short spans of time if desired. The index is useful. So, while I did not quite get what I had hoped for, I also did not walk away with nothing. This book is a good resource. I am going to keep my copy and have it on hand for the parents of my students to borrow. This book is a very good value for its price.
A Great Tool for Parents and Teachers Alike.......2007-03-12
7 Keys to Comprehension helps both parents and teachers better understand the process children go through as they are learning to read and comprehend what they are reading. The writers avoid the technical speech and wording that often characterizes many professional texts. This book is written in such a way that someone who does not have a background in education and/or teaching can understand exactly what the writers want the readers to know...how to help children become better readers!
For teachers, this book is an excellent choice for cross-grade level book studies and discussion groups. The first and second grade teachers at my school, along with our principal, art teacher, literacy leader, family partnership specialist, and librarian jigsawed this book as part of a year-long, school-wide focus on comprehension and the learning that took place from the book and from each other was invaluable.
In turn, we have had the opportunity to share what we have learned with our parents and with other members of the community. The book can be used as a guide for parent workshops and presentations to the general public as well as in educational settings.
I have started to implement the strategies mentioned in the book and my students' level of comprehension is clearly improving dramatically.
Because of the straightforward nature of this amazing book, the lives are ALL of our children are changing for the better!

This book is an understandable way for parents to instill the love of reading into their children. It gives real, practical ways to encourage the child to think beyond the text and link their reading to real world experiences, other books they have read and their own feelings. A very good book for parents with children who are just learning to read.
Practical Pedagogy for the Home and for the Classroom.......2006-07-10
Usually, after a kid has learned her phonics, she can sit down with a book and explore its inner world. Sometimes, however, one encounters a kid who can read perfectly fine, but who just doesn't get it; no matter how many times she is asked to "focus", she will finish the book with little more information than with which she started. If you are entrusted with the education of the latter type of child, than this book can provide valuable insight and direction.
Susan Zimmermann and Chryse Hutchins have successfully isolated the processes which are used (subconsciously) by natural readers in order to make the leap from phonics to understanding. Each one of these processes receives a full treatment, containing conceptual, demonstrative, and pedagogic angles.
Notably, the pedagogic sections present a dual outlook, first providing effective techniques for parent-child sessions, and afterward describing practical strategies for the classroom. Great Book! Very informative. Goes into good detail of every aspect but not too detailed that you have a hard time understanding it. I have purchased a few books on the topic as I have experienced some unusual situations with my horse breeding program and found it to follow right along with my vets advice and information on many of them. For the money, this is by far the best book I have purchased yet on horse breeding.

This is a pretty informative book, but I found that there is still some basic information that is not mentioned. For example my vet said a 3-week heat cycle for a mare's first March heat is not unusual. The book never mentions it. It also doesn't say anything about dealing with a virgin stallion. My vet had different advice than they did on washing the stallion. Since he maintains a stud, I trust his judgement. It is still informative however and we'll have to see how the foaling part goes. Just wish it had more information in certain areas. It would have saved me a $70. trip to the vet for something that is normal.

Not What I had Hoped.......2001-11-20
Despite the appearance of the Eames Lounge on the dust jacket for this book it offers precious little information on this type of classic mid-century modern furniture. More than half of the book is devoted to ceramics and the furniture portion is primarily devoted to designers and designs that you may never have heard of. There is a very brief section in the back of the book that pertains to "Other Designers". These "others" include Charles Eames and George Nelson!
Perhaps the glass and ceramic items and the odd and rare furniture in this book are your cup of tea. Then this book is perfect for you. The format is nice and the photography is well done. However, if, like me, you are into collecting more mainstream "mid-century" modern furniture (by such little noted designers as Eames or Nelson) you might want to put your money towards a different book because this volume contains little information you will find useful.

Lighting has as much or more about how we feel towards a building, area, or room as anything else. In fact, we do not see a wall or a painting, we see the light coming from it. If that light is too bright, too dim, or the wrong color we see something different than we do under other circumstances.
This book is an explanation of what we see in things. It begins with how the eye works, how it changes with age and goes on to the nature of light, texture and spatial depth. From here he moves into the architectural area. First he talks about the different ways we percieve the things we see. Then he goes on to the Luminance Brightness Rating that gives a numerical relationship that allows for the comparison of different surfaces and other technical aspects of using light in architectural areas.
I would rank this as an intermediate level book aimed at the working architect or the advanced student.

BOOK HAS IMPACT ON ANYONE INTERESTED IN SOCIETY AND IT'S ENHANCEMENT AND IMPROVEMENT. THERE SHOULD BE MORE OF DR. GREER'S KIND OF LITERATURE AND FEELINGS EXRESSED IN WRITING. I purchased and read Dr. Greer's book and was expremely impressed with the details that were modestly included. I did see his presentation on cable TV and his image is is as modest as the book is written. I feel that he is an asset to the medical profession and writing profession and would sincerely like to see more work by him in literature. I would like to stresss here that I have read this book 4 times and still pickup different things while reading this text. The book was exellent. It made me really see what goes on with the homeless. Dr. Greer has struggled with giving the homeless medical service, as well as becoming their friend. The same way Dr. Greer has learned from the homeless, we all should learn from him and help him in this.

This book is an inspiration to anyone who reads it. Students who have seen Joe Greer work at the shelters and free clinics in Miami, are inspired to follow in his footsteps and to participate in solving the problems in their communities. Now, readers everywhere can meet this courageous doctor and feel empowered to also make a difference. Ultimately, he is right, it will take the personal involvement of private citizens to change the world- not government agencies. I am grateful to Dr. Greer for this beautiful book. Like a stone cast into a pond, the ripple effect of this book will have positive and far reaching consequences.
