Book Description

After fleeing the planet Paradis and discovering that many of their ships were no longer capable of deep space travel, the Colonials were forced to hold a lottery to decide who in the fleet would live and who would have to stay behind and die. Apollo, Sheba, and Koran forfeit their secured place in the fleet to stay behind with 800 other Colonials who have been chosen by the people's lottery to sacrifice their lives. They are surprised by the arrival of an ancient 13th Tribe space ark, which had been freed from its frozen grave deep within the bowels of Paradis by the catastrophic destruction of the planet. They discover that the huge craft is habitable and capable of sustaining all surviving colonials who were forced to stay behind.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2007-07-29

To put it bluntly, this book is horrible. It goes nowhere and does nothing. Apollo falls for Sheba, but in an earlier book they were going to get married but Mr. Hatch totally forgot that storyline. Dalton and Troy break up and then he has Trays falling for Dalton and she maybe for him. In an earlier book Trays tried to assault Dalton so I don't see where all this newfouond love is coming from. In a nutshell nothinig much happens in this book. Those left behind at paradise get sick and are miraculously cured by a dead Baltar's ghost. The remaining feet is still months away from any resupply, prompting Athena to blow up a ship of sick and wounded in order to prolong what remaining food they have left. That is pretty much the gist of the book. Horrible writing, boring story. This was a complete waste of my time.

5 out of 5 stars The 13th tribe is alive.......2007-06-12

I have to disagree with the other reviewers of this book... I found it hitting square on with the central theme of Glen Larson in its connection to the ancient mysteries of the bible, atlantis, toletecs, mayans etc... The premise of Battlestar Galactica was that our pre-history wonders from around the world, which even now we struggle to explain were part of the early settlement of the the colonies, the 13th tribe. Richard's book plays into this theme very neatly with the space story of Noah's ark. The let your mind wonder connection between the two is what made this story so enjoyable for me. Try to think of the tale of Noah's ark being a story of this ark and I do believe if one is not too critical this story does come alive. Read it for yourself and you'll see Richard is doing a fine job carrying on Mr. Larsons story line.

1 out of 5 stars I'm a big fan of Battlestar Galactica, but..........2006-11-30

this book is pretty useful as a paperweight. With all due respect to Richard Hatch, the book doesn't flow well. It seems choppy. There are places throughout the book where the story moves from one character to the next without any break in the text to notify the reader. I found myself reading sections several times trying to figure out what was going on. Maybe this is the fault of the publisher, or formatting the print, and not the author.

I leapt at the chance to own one of Hatch's novels. Prior to reading this book, I was looking for copies of his previous Battlestar Galactica books to add to my collection. Now I'm not so sure.

The ending of this novel leaves the impression there will be more to come. Check your local library for future books, but leave your money in your wallet. (Unless you need a good paperweight...)

2 out of 5 stars It's a bit slight..........2006-03-07

After "Paradis", "Destiny" and now "Redemption" read like combined and inflated scripts for Richard Hatch's proposed season for a new "Battlestar Galactica" sequel TV series. The problem is that they're too episodic, with too little resolution. They don't stand well as novels on their own. There's been little real plot advancement, just incidents, stuff happening, and all shortly after the post "Paradis" split of the fleet (it's telling that half the fleet doesn't actually get to its destination, while the other half stays where they were at the start of the book). With the demise of ibooks, I have to wonder if Richard Hatch will get to finish telling the meta story. It still feels undone.

1 out of 5 stars Book needs more of everything.......2005-11-13

This book did not have a real story in it expect for the romance of apollo and sheba. Mr. Hatch needs to add more action and adventure. Where did it go with this story. It was like reading a soap opera. If he writes another one I hope he adds a lot more than he did for this one.

5 out of 5 stars Classic eighties Marvel!.......2006-09-25

If you get right down to it, most people consider the mid-eighties to be the creative peak of Marvel Comics, and these classic stories by Frank Miller are prime examples of why. At that time, besides the obviously popular "X-books", Marvel had three titles with writer-artists who took it to another level and breathed new life into the Marvel Universe. There was Walt Simonson's genius run on the Might Thor, John Byrne's definitive work on the Fantastic Four, and, of course, Frank Miller's ground-up rebuilding of Daredevil.

It can't be overstated how influential Miller's Daredevil work was. The truth is, almost every Daredevil creator since has been unable to escape Miller's run, whether they tried to copy it or run away from it. And Miller himself has ever escaped it either. He has turned out a lot of fine work, but it's all ultimately fallen short when compared to Daredevil.

To be honest about it, as inspired as Miller's writing on Daredevil was, I found his art to be sometimes lacking (just a personal opinion) when compared to the issues drawn by Klaus Janson or David Mazzuchelli (or however you spell it). The best Miller Daredevils are the ones drawn by them, and the best Miller drawn issues are the ones with Janson inking.

Hopefully that observation didn't come across as negative, because these stories are definitive comics classics. If you're a fan of Marvel Comics then you HAVE to read these stories or your experience is incomplete. That's all you can say.

BTW, yes these stories are collected also in the "Frank Miller Daredevil Visionaries", but because of those new editions, you can get a real steal on older collections of Daredevil stories like "Gang War", "Born Again" and even the "Elektra Saga" buying used!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Miller.......2002-06-29

In this one we get to see DD vs. Bullseye. It's a keeper. I wouldn't be surprised if the movie is based on the material written in this paperback. If you like Daredevil and the best Miller art ....in my opinion no one has ever surpassed his work on this title...buy this one. It's before Sin City and his run on the Dark Knight. It has all the elements of his later work.

3 out of 5 stars All these issues can be found in Frank Miller DD Vol.2.......2002-04-27

I bought this book and Frank Miller DD Vol.2 at the same time. Even though i enjoyed the reading it, I was dissapointed to find that all of the issues printed in this are foud in Frank Miller DD Vol.2. So if you already have vol.2 dont get this.

4 out of 5 stars Great, pulpy classic.......2001-06-18

Frank Miller's seminal work on the Daredevil series in the late '70s and early '80s constitutes one of the greatest writer / artist runs in comic book history. The stories stand up today as the perfect marriage of concept, story, and art--Miller really knows when to be fantastic and when to ground the book in gritty reality. This volume comprises a five issue arc (issues 169 - 172 and 180 in the original Daredevil series) that pits DD against the Kingpin and arch-nemesis Bullseye, setting up events and characters that would echo through the title for years. The only drawback to this edition is the hideous cover art; it deserves a more lavish presentation, and I think they're getting around to it with the "Visonaries" series.

4 out of 5 stars Daredevil: Gang War.......2001-06-18

I personally love this trade for so many reasons. I thoroughly enjoy the dark edge Miller gave daredevil in the 80's, the intense battles with not only the enemies (Bullseye/Kingpin) but using rival gangs, and good old drama with his outstanding storytelling. I have always been a fan of Frank Miller's art with daredevil and the blend of fighting techniques that he gives the characters which gives the reader more vivid excitement from page to page. Noone has been able to touch his art/storytelling since and reading these older issues reminds me of why I am still a Frank Miller fan even today.

Book Description

From Dr. Phil's Letter to Parents:

I want to talk to you about family: yours and mine. I know and feel that as parents, you and I share some very important priorities. Just like you, I love my family more than anything in this world and I want us all to be safe, healthy, happy and prosperous in everything we do both within our family and as we go out into the world. Cynics will tell you that in our fast-paced society "family" is becoming obsolete, that it is just an old-fashioned, lost concept, getting buried in a busy world of "enlightened" people. I'm here to tell you that that is not right, not even close. Family is even more important today than in generations past, and its erosion is unacceptable. This is a fight we can and must win. This is a fight we will win if we just do our homework and plug in. What I intend to do in Family First is tell you with great precision what you need to stop doing and what you need to start doing to lead your family with such a pure purpose and power that the competing messages and influences are drowned out. I plan to help you define success and then take the steps to create and claim it for you and yours. Your children are the stars in your crown and it is time for them to shine; it is okay for them to shine and, if you do your job, shine they will. -- Dr. Phil

5 out of 5 stars Tools to help put your family first........2007-09-18

This book is on my mind because I recommended it yesterday while talking with a single mother. She clearly loved her kids but was at her wit's end with them not listening, not helping out at home and constantly arguing with her and each other. She said she had "tried everything" (which she later acknowledged she hadn't once she saw how she eventually gave in because the disciplinary tactics she used "weren't working"). This book immediately came to mind as one that is easy to read and will give her guidance on setting boundaries, sticking with them, being consistent and doing "what it takes" to get her family back on track.

This book offers an assessment for parents to identify their parenting style and their child's personality style and provides strategies to best adapt their parenting accordingly. Make sure to measure each of your children separately - amazing how kids in the same family can be so different!

This book is especially recommended for those who are (or quickly heading toward) parenting teens. Even if you feel like you've lost control of your teenage kids, this book's message that it's never too late to turn things around is reassuring and empowering. Some parents might need additional professional help but this book provides a solid start for all.

Dr Phil is inspiring as always. I really enjoyed this book and I think Dr. Phil is powerful and innovative. I also think his work is similar to the encouraging words of another doctor, Dr. Joan. Dr. Joan is just as good in my opinion. I would recommend her for more inspiration and positive words.

I read this book or rather skimmed it for a quick read. It changed my life and my family's. It is great!!! Its interesting and he is right on the money. I too wondered how good a parent he could be traveling all the time but if you read the book he takes a child with him often giving him time one on one. I want to buy it and read it again so I can highlight all the things that mean something to me!

          Book Description

They're a perfect pair. They're meant for each other. They're wine and cheese, cheese and wine. We may know the classic combinations--cheddar and port, blue cheese and Sauternes, goat cheese and Sauvignon Blanc--and appreciate their ethereal marriage of flavors and textures. But as Laura Werlin reveals in this book, there's a whole world of perfect pairings to discover.

In her follow-up to the IACP Award-winning The New American Cheese, Werlin guides us to matching the extraordinary artisan cheeses being made across America with our own incomparable wines. Her story begins with an overview of the seven basic styles of cheese, from fresh, tangy chevre to buttery, soft-ripened camembert to nutty, aged gouda. She explains how each is made, what flavor qualities each has, and what types of wines will generally bring out the best in each category of cheese. She offers the same kind of overview for American wines, paying particular attention to those produced by the smaller boutique wineries. Guidelines for combining American cheese and wine, clues for making the perfect pairs, and charts showing the ideal combinations at a glance make this book an indispensable resource.

The book also includes profiles of 50 American cheesemakers and winemakers and 55 delectable recipes for dishes that use cheese or feature cheese by itself. Werlin has organized the recipes with entertaining in mind, and offers creative ideas for hors d'oeuvres, pizzas, cheese plates, picnics, and desserts. The book also includes an extensive listing of cheesemakers and winemakers around the country with mail-order information.

          Amazon.com

There's a certain built-in fear factor to be found at any decent wine shop or cheese counter. With The All American Cheese and Wine Book Laura Werlin makes it all go away. This is the author who, with The New American Cheese, so ably demonstrated the fact that terrific cheeses of international quality are being made in the US. In this second volume she shows the reader how it is possible, with a little foreknowledge, to confront that retail fear and start making exciting choices of wines that will open up cheeses, and cheeses that will reveal the true nature of wine. You will find yourself moving gracefully from "Oh my God!" to "What a friend we have in cheeses!"

This is a very straightforward book, with chapters that include "All About Cheese," and "All About Wine." Here you will find the seven basic cheeses and how they are made, as well as information on winemaking and tasting. In "Bringing Cheese and Wine Together" Werlin gives us her ten basic guidelines as well as lists and charts that reveal clues for perfect matchings of wine and cheese. And then the heart of the book, the pairings of 50 cheese makers and wine makers throughout the US, which displays a real feel for the passion that underlies these two major product categories. These profiles are delightfully matched with recipes Werlin files under Hors d'Oeuvres, Pizzas, Cheese Plates, Cheese Bar, Picnics, and Desserts. This is a beautifully designed book with outstanding photography underscoring all that Laura Werlin has to share. --Schuyler Ingle

This is a great resource book for American wine and cheeses. It also has some really good receipes.

4 out of 5 stars Good recipes, gorgeous photos, helpful wine advice.......2003-12-20

This is an odd but appealing collection of a wine overview, 50 cheesemakers and winemakers, and 55 recipes.

Although I like wine, I've never gotten much further than "I know when I like it." Among its other virtues, The All American Cheese and Wine Book has an excellent section with advice about cheese and wine pairings. Not just "emmenthaler with riesling" match-ups (though that's there, for us give-me-the-answer simpletons), but educational guidance about how to *think* about the subject: "...red wine will often seem bitter when sipped with many cheeses, because the tannins in red wine are exacerbated by salt and umami. Many cheeses have a good amount of discernable salt, which brings the tannin to the fore." It certainly helped me a lot.

But if you *still* don't want to think about it, each of the recipes has a wine recommendation.

I've only tried one recipe so far, which was excellent: a carmelized onion, bacon, and gruyere fondue. The instructions are relatively simple and easy to follow; no complaints there. In general, the recipes are expansions on the familiar without being too much of a stretch for relatives who don't like "weird stuff," such as cheddar-parmesan crackers, or cherry tomatoes with herbed goat cheese and shrimp. Unfortunately for me, a seemingly high percentage of the recipes use goat cheese -- and we don't LIKE goat cheese in my household. (There would be much screaming if I even tried to serve it.) There's also a tropism towards appetizers and a "cheese plate" rather than full-blown entrees; not that those are bad, but you should know what to expect.

The cheesemaking and winemaker profiles are interesting, in a read-once sort of way. While I like browsing through the book with the profiles interspersed with the recipes, when I'm actually looking for a recipe they get in the way. But I'll forgive this easily, because the photos (for both profiles and food) are simply gorgeous.

You'll enjoy browsing through this book. You'll probably find a few recipes to make again and again. (There's already a bookmark stuck into that fondue recipe.) But I'm not sure this will land in your dog-eared pile.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic guide for the uninitiated!.......2003-04-17

Once I made the dreadful mistake of, "This wine's good; this cheese is good, and they'll be good together," and learned that you could ruin a good cheese and a good wine in the time it takes to gag the cheese down your throat. This book is clear and methodical in presenting an actual methodology - not rules - for pairing cheeses and wines. Werlin presents a wonderful framework to start thinking about how to pair cheeses with wines, and then gives you her blessing to go forth and experiment. I think she could make a mint selling poster-sized charts of her suggested combinations to every liquor store and high-end cheese shop in the country. The profiles of cheese makers and wineries will make you want to go on tour of the U.S - and happily, she tells you how to find them (and their goods). However, the book has wonderful photos and descriptions to allow nice armchair traveling too.

I can't say enough about this book, I have seen many dog books but this one is the best by far because it has everything you could need to know. I expecially lov eth what to do in an emergency section. It saved my dogs life! The training section is great because it has several ways to do things. This is the best book you can get, if you get no other book get this one, for your puppys sake.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Puppy Resource.......2004-07-04

This is an EXCEPTIONAL resource that stacks up to a mountain of other books, videos, and friendly advice from just about everyone.

Before buying this book (on impulse during a pre-adoption "scouting mission" for equipment at a local pet store), I'd already acquired a half-dozen dog books, and as many videos (along with umpteen recordings of dog training shows on Animal Planet). I was not feeling the slightest need for another resource on how to raise our new dog. Until this very thorough work caught my eye.

This book is superbly clear, well organized, and visually entertaining. It trumps everything else in my substantial library of resources. (Okay, okay. Yes, I was afraid I'd screw up the little wonder's life -- and mine in the process.)

Ms. Palika addresses virtually every conceivable issue clearly and directly. Her well-crafted advice is presented in a very appealing, inviting format that has become the publisher's trademark.

          5 out of 5 stars Adorable Puppies.......2003-10-23

If you are thinking about buying a new puppy, this is an excellent resource. If you walk past a pet store and see a cute puppy, you might want to read this book first. There are excellent ideas like bringing a puppy home on a day when you will be home the next day or maybe for the weekend.

Puppy proofing a house is also a great idea. Especially since "chewing on everything" is an expression of basic canine hunting instincts. Do you have a baby gate? You might want to buy one. There are grooming supplies, cleaning supplies and toys to think about. I had never considered the danger of electric cords. You mean they chew on those too? Yikes.

This book was truly enlightening. For example, you should not buy a puppy that is not at least 9 weeks old because there is a "critical fear" period in which puppies who are frightened for any reason will become a lifelong fear. Even a car ride or a trip to the Vet could make them afraid of Vet visits and car rides.

          The Main Sections:

So You Want a Puppy - Are you ready for a new puppy? How to decide on the type of dog you want to own. There are more than 400 dog breeds to choose from. There is also information on the types of breeds that require more frequent grooming. Do you want an active breed like a Shih Tzu or a laid-back breed like a Golden Retriever.

Bringing Home Your New Best Friend - All the essentials. What you should do before bringing a new puppy home and how to set household rules, prepare for housetraining and the essential first 24 hours. Do you have any poisonous plants in your yard? Is your fence secure enough to prevent escapes? How do you housetrain? Some great ideas about "not using newspapers" because apparently this is a bad idea in the long run!

Your Puppy's Health - Everything from the first visit to the vet to what your puppy should eat. Also helpful information for emergencies. There is a lot to think about in this chapter including vaccinations, spaying and neutering.

How to Train Your Puppy - Interesting tips on how to be your puppy's teacher. How you can use training to avoid trouble. If you don't want your puppy to chew on his leash, you can simply dip it in vinegar. There are simple ways to show your puppy you are the leader of the pack. Liz Palika also gives "Ten Simple Principles for Successful Training." You start with the basics and then work your way into "boundary training."

More to Do... and Learn - What are the beset games and toys? Also a section on "Why Does My Puppy do That?" You will find out some creative ways to get a puppy to stop barking.

If you are trying to decide between owning a cat or a dog, this book will defiantly help you see if you are a "cat OR dog" person. You might be both.

KISS books have so many great extras and pictures. You will find Trivia, definitions and website addresses. The pictures in this KISS book are especially cute.

A must-read for anyone thinking about adopting a new puppy.

5 out of 5 stars puppy readiness 101.......2003-03-19

This is an excellent book for someone thinking of bringing a puppy into the home. A realistic and helpful guide this is different from the Idiot's and Dummmies series in that it is much easier to leaf through. The color coded sections make it easy to flip to a section you need and the pictures are awsome (as with any dk book!) Liz Palika's advice and knowledge are excellent and I know I feel better armed for puppy rearing with this book on my shelf.

            Book Description

For devotees of American decorative arts, Wallace Nutting (1861-1941) needs little introduction. A Congregational minister turned author, photographer, and wildly successful entrepreneur, Nutting was the principal authority on early American furniture for much of the twentieth century and played an important role in the development of a colonial revival aesthetic and ideology. He collected, reproduced, and marketed colonial artifacts, and the goods and experiences he offered his middle-class customers promoted his idealized notion of a time and place that he called "Old America." This handsomely illustrated book is the first full-length study of Nutting's life and work. Thomas Andrew Denenberg describes Nutting's interrelated endeavors, from his varied writings (including Furniture of the Pilgrim Century and the monumental three-volume Furniture Treasury) to his photography (both amateur and professional), chain of restored museum houses, renowned collection of seventeenth-century furniture, reproduction colonial furniture business, and advertising program. By charting Nutting's activities, Denenberg creates a picture of an influential cultural critic who deftly combined myth and materialism, contributing significantly to both the growth of consumerism and the development of an antimodern worldview in the twentieth-century United States.

5 out of 5 stars Colonial invention and re-invention.......2004-05-09

Though I didn't see the show for which this book serves as a kind of catalogue, my enjoyment of it isn't limited to that. I don't know much about the Colonial revival in American culture, and this book is a splendid introduction to the ways in which our present-day culture have been modelled and molded by a series of cultural enterpreneurs like Nutting, for history is invidious and in the post-modern condition we can no longer distinguish between what is "real" and what is the simulacrum. Nutting saw clearly how through mass production he could disseminate his own vision of what colonial New England history was like, in ways that would reinforce his own prejudices towards nationalism, etc., while gibing with his genuinely moving and democratic feelings towards beauty akin to the Arts and Crafts movement of the UK and the USA of a slightly earlier date. Thomas Denenberg has all the facts and figures at his fingertips--he's a wonderful companion and never allows the readers to lose sight of the overall picture amid the myriad pleasues of Nutting minutiae. I'll have to find out more about American historiography, especially if it's this deliciously presented.

I personally didn't care for many of the patterns in this book. Although the little table clock is nice. There was only maybe 1 or 2 patterns that i would really consider doing. I would encourage you to visually look through the book to see if it appeals to you before you spend the money to buy it!

I really like this book. It's not very big, but the patterns are very good quality. The little dutch windmill clock is really cute, and the Anniversary plaque is beautiful. I highly recommend this book

                              Book Description

Ever since Japan opened its doors to the West in the latter half of the nineteenth century, Westerners have been fascinated by the exquisite art forms that flourished during the previous two hundred years of self-imposed isolation. Among the most intriguing were the bold yet refined paintings
and prints known as ukiyo-e, which portrayed the popular pursuits of the time with extraordinary power. Such was the appeal of this unique art in the West that tens of thousands of superb prints eventually found their way into museum collections around the world.

The present volume highlights over 130 outstanding examples from the vast holdings of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Strikingly original and sumptuously colored, the ukiyo-e in these pages recapture the spirit of the period in which they were created. Here can be found the glamorous
courtesans of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters, the flamboyant vigor of kabuki theater, and the diversities of the Japanese landscape.

The prints form a breathtaking panorama of the world of ukiyo-e from its inception to its final flowering at the end of the nineteenth century. Complementary texts by Rupert Faulkner and Richard Lane illuminate the craft of woodblock print making and explore the emergence of such versatile geniuses
                              as Hokusai and Hiroshige.

The lasting appeal of Japanese woodblock prints may be rooted in the richness of their imagery and the power of their innovation, or perhaps in their uncanny ability to convey the special vitality of Edo Japan. Whatever the case, this lavish volume seeks not only to pay homage to the Japanese
artists and craftsmen who took the woodblock print to unprecedented heights, but also to show the range of this astonishingly versatile art form.

5 out of 5 stars The Floating World.......1999-05-31

Unexpected earnings from the Great Exhibition of 1851 (at the Crystal Palace in London) were used to establish the following year the Victoria and Albert Museum, the world's largest collection of applied art and design. In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry made his famous expedition to Japan, which had been isolated for 250 years, and set up trade agreements. Examples of Western technology (locomotive, telegraph, camera) were given to the Japanese, and Japanese artifacts to Westerners. Of particular impact were Japanese woodcuts of the 17th through 19th centuries, called ukiyo-e or images of "the floating world," tens of thousands of which ended up in museum collections throughout the world. Many (perhaps most) American and European artists and designers were influenced by the then-strange stylistic traits of these prints (crisp black outlines, bold flat areas of color, asymmetrical arrangements, and dramatic cropping), among them such people as Whistler, Manet, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin, Aubrey Beardsley, and Frank Lloyd Wright. "All my work," wrote Vincent van Gogh to his brother, "is in a way founded on Japanese art." This stunning volume is a full-color treasury of 130 of those woodcuts (introduced and annotated by scholars) from the many now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. I had the honor of hearing Mr. Salsitz speak recently. I was amazed by his story and I wanted to know more so I bought this book. He has a keen memory, and he paints a clear picture of life during his childhood in the backwards town of Kolbuszowa. The book is always interesting and the story it tells is fascinating. I encourage everyone to read this first-hand account of this little slice of life as it existed before the Holocaust.

                                5 out of 5 stars Loved it........2002-03-24

I really enjoyed this book! It is an intriguing story and vivid depiction of a place that no longer exists except in memory.

Overall it was highly readable, with a minor exception being that too many anecdotes took place in footnotes, which perhaps could have been included in the body of the text. There is a small amount of repetition; this is much more than made up for by the wealth of interesting details and insights about life in that town, how it changed over time, and then when invaded.

I think this book would be highly interesting to the general public and especially those who want to know more about: life in towns that were later destroyed by the Nazi's; life in provincial Polish towns/or Galicia before WWII; issues of rememberance and WWII; relations between peasants, Jews, Othodox, ultra-Orthodox, Zionists, and Christians/Catholics, Poles, Germans.

If you have any relatives that lived in or near Kolbuszowa, than it is an absolute, must-buy. I found it particularly intriguing and a valuable resource regarding family history and issues of memory of WWII, because I had relatives who died in that town and some who were able to leave before its occupation. Feel free to email me if you have questions.
