Book Description
In Birth Marks, private investigator Hannah Wolfe gets a case worthy of the great detective novels she so admires. At first glance, this one doesn't fit the bill: she's asked to find a missing ballet dancer, Carolyn Hamilton. When Carolyn's body is fished out of the Thames, stones in her pockets and an eight-month-old fetus in her belly, the police think it's a no-brainer: Single pregnant woman can't face her impending responsibilities, takes a leap off a bridge. But Hannah can't shake the suspicion that something else is going on.
Hannah's investigation takes her from the London dance world to the upper echelons of Parisian society in search of the unborn child's father. But his explanation only raises more questions, and for Hannah the case grows more treacherous, fueling her own ambivalent feelings about relationships and motherhood.

An excellent detective story.......2007-06-13
Sarah Dunant writes really good detective novels -- so good that I wish she hadn't moved on to historical fiction. Her smart protagonist, Hannah Wolfe, is both cynical and vulnerable, and the secondary characters are extremely well drawn. BIRTH MARKS will grab you with a shocking early development that most authors wouldn't dare employ, but Dunant makes it work. Definitely recommended for readers who like V.I. Warshawski and other strong female sleuths.
this is a very well-written mystery.......2006-08-19
I'm surprised that there are not a lot of glowing reviews on Amazon of "Birth Marks" by Sarah Dunant. It was first printed in 1992, and my edition was printed in 2005, so there has been plenty of time for readers to discover the Hannah Wolfe series by this excellent author. There are at least three Hannah Wolfe mysteries: "Birth Marks", "Fat Lands", and "Under My Skin". These are not re-runs of 1950s gumshoe detective stories, or old British ladies solving village mysteries. Hannah is like Bridget Jones, if Bridget doubled her IQ and went to work for a London detective agency. She's smart, young, single, urban, and hip. In "Birth Marks", Hannah is hired by an aging balarina to locate her missing protege. When she turns up in the Thames, dead and pregnant, Hannah feels compelled to track down her killer. This is a very exciting, literate mystery. If you read this one, you'll have to read all three books. They are really good.

Perfectly Excellent!!!.......2003-01-15
This book is one of my favorites that I have ever read. It shows off it's mysitcal abillities without going overboard.
why did she stop?.......2002-12-03
I have all of Claudia J. Edwards' books; I love them. I wouldn't trade them for love or money. Her writing is not the tightest, but her characters glow with emotion and determination. Her women, especially, are incredibly strong and capable characters. While hardly flawless, her female character struggle through with grit, and that only makes it better.
Throw in a lot of horses and all i can wonder, repeatedly, is why there isn't any more! I wish there was a way to contact this writer and beg for another book.
Tyger, Tyger, Burning Bright in the Forests of the Night.......2002-03-13
Runa's mother was hanged when Runa was twelve for being a witch. Runa spent the next eleven years on the run from those who would do the same to her because of her ability to wield magic. Finally she is caught, imprisoned for five years and then exiled. After two years wandering in the wilderness she enters a green and pleasant land. At this time she is 32, she has never established a home or a lasting relationship of any depth because of the misfortunes in her life.
The story opens with Runa being stalked by a large, invisible beast. When it appears it is a silver striped, sabetooth tiger, longer than Runa's horse. This Silver cat announces that Runa is its "meat" but does not attack her.
Exploring further, Runa discovers a land where the skeletons of the plague dead remain unburied. It is also infested with outlaws. She rescues a young boy whose father has been killed and learns that the land was once under the care of "the Burdened Ones", the Silver Cat Mantic and Margrave. The Margrave was the war leader and hunter, the Mantic a magic wielder. Together they provided protection, sustenance and healing for the "Tiller Folk." But about 150 years earlier the Margrave and Mantic had been deposed and killed in an uprising. Since that time the land had suffered. Anyone who had attempted since then to take over the Castellum where the Burdened ones had ruled has been destroyed by the magical guardians.
Her interest piqued, Runa manages to establish herself in the Castellum and begins to surround herself with the Tiller folk, but she finds herself unable to perform the roles of both the Margrave and the Mantic. The Silver Tiger is the guardian spirit of the land who chooses the Mantic and mMrgrave.
Then, one day, a bearded and braided barbarian, accompanied by a dozen followers pounds at the gate of the Silver cat castellum with the warning that there savage cannibals are coming their way. The savages are being herded their way by the other local leaders because they do not recognize Runa as a proper Mantic despite her possession of two horses and her undoubted skill at sorcery.
This is the story of how Runa and her barbarian come to terms with one another and with the requirments of being burdened by responsibility for other people. From two separate cultures, neither completely understands the other, but they are forced to learn to cooperate and respect one another abilities in order to survive.
This book, despite some small awkwardness in style is definitely a keeper.
Magic Tiger Captures Heroine.......1999-01-16
An independent but lonely magic-wielding heroine meets a magic tiger who wants her to run his kingdom. Taking on a life of responsibility, heroine finds love and adventure. Magic is similar to Marion Zimmer Bradley's overworld.
Heroine clashes wits in magic duel.......1999-01-16
Bringing horses to Godsland, the heroine finds she and her followers almost prisoners of an ambitious priest in the clergy-run system. The book focuses on the clash between the heroine, who has a bitter secret in her past, and the celibate priest-hero, who wants to do good in the world, but is dominating and controlling. Interesting conclusion.

Why Take the Chance? The Bird Flu is real. It's deadly. And it's spreading. Within the next year it could threaten your home, your livelihood, your family and even your life. It may not become the pandemic many experts now fear, but do you really want to take the chance of being totally unprepared? This book is not hype. It's not scare tactics. It's the facts: what avian influenza is and what it can become from a physician who understands not only the bird flu, but what you realistically can and should do to protect your loved ones. Inside you'll find: A brief history of flu pandemics (like the 1918 flu) The current state of the bird flu Possible consequences of a flu epidemic How to prevent infection for you and your family Your personal medical and supply kit What to do if someone is infected There's no better preparation than information. Before you make any decisions, get the facts from the doctor who knows.
Customer Reviews:
This was worth my time to read.......2007-03-02
Like many Americans, all I knew about bird flu was what I got from headlines, and that information was very basic and not helpful as far as forming a plan of action. This book was different. While less than 100 pages, and some of those diagrams, there is no effort on the part of the author to impress (or boggle) your mind with fancy words. He speaks at a level that normal people can understand, and I feel more educated about this flu issue than in the past. He helped me understand what an epidemic means (not just the Webster definition) as in, how many people get sick, and what we might face. I hadn't considered how it might affect me if a sizable part of the nation got sick all at once (even if I remained untouched, there's still consequences).
Pros - Not complicated medical lingo (skips why the viral RNA has potential to mutate and therefore cross
from birds to humans because of gene marker...) Just what the common person needs to know
- Not an overly long book (not too much to remember all at once)
- Small enough to fit in your coat pocket to read little bits at a time
- Instruction is simple, in an even tone, not panicky
_ Recommendation of "The Great Influenza" was a good one, borrowed it from the library. You probably
won't find "the Bird Flu Preparedness Planner" in your library
Cons - Well, I wish I knew more, and I want some details, especially on how I can take steps on my own to deal
with this when it hits.
- $5 seems like a sum for a small book...
Overall: This book is straight-to-the-point, simple info on what a flu epidemic could be like. I think he hit his goal with getting the basic info out to the masses (this book just needs to move more) in a timely fashion (this was published for 2005) so that if the flu came, at least SOME info would be out there. He has written a second one, "Bird Flu Manual" which I have purchased but not read yet. I think it will fall to me to be the bird flu 'expert' in our family, so I am trying to educate myself. Emails don't count. I always put more stock in a bonafide published work that the author could be hung out to dry on if he writes fluff. Emails are anonymous, and forwards could be written by anyone. Zero authority.
Buy this, read it, get it to someone else. I gave my copy to my father, as he is also interested.
Brief introduction on surviving avian flu.......2006-12-14
Grattan Woodson wrote the brief book, "The Bird Flu Preparedness Planner," ". . .to prepare his patients for a possible catastrophic event. . ." (page 83). The book, as the title suggests, is a nuts and bolts volume, giving readers a brief introduction to avian flu (with a focus on H5N1) and how to deal with it if a pandemic breaks out.
There are introductory chapters about the nature of avian flu and why it could be so destructive of human life. The chapter beginning on page 21 is where this becomes a useful "how to do it" manual. This looks at "pre-pandemic" preparations, including preparing stockpiles of medicines and supplies that one might need if pandemic strikes. There is also am listing of nonperishable foodstuffs that are worth collecting beforehand.
The chapter beginning on page 41 speaks of home flu treatment advice. The author notes that one of the single most important pieces of advice is to (page 41): ". . .make sure [people] have plenty of fluids. Dehydration must be prevented, as this can be fatal in a patient who would otherwise survive." Diet recommendations for those afflicted with flu are enumerated as well.
One of the more sobering presentations in this book is a set of maps showing how rapidly that the 1918 pandemic swept across the United States. From a small outbreak in mid-September, we see the entire country infected by October 13th.
For those interested in a brief introduction as to what one might do to prepare, this is a useful volume. Of course, the brevity is also a problem if one wants much more detail. But if what one wants is "quick, dirty, and brief," this is a volume worth looking at.
Short but filled with crucial information.......2006-05-26
Dr. Woodson has shown keen insight last year in foreseeing the likely conditions that would prevent most people suffering from an influenza pandemic from obtaining treatment at overcrowded hospitals. Now the Federal and State governments openly admit as much.
The techniques and procedures contained within this book describe how to treat a family member who has contracted a highly pathogenic influenza, such as H5N1. While the severest cases still need hospitalization, the vast majority of other cases can be treated at home if one follows the carefully spelled out therapy Dr. Woodson has communicated in layman's terms. I loaned this book to my physician who called back two days later to confirm the soundness of the treatment plan. Interestingly enough, the book only costs $5, but the information within makes it worth its weight in gold.
Simple. Straight-Forward. Practical. Helpful........2006-05-12
The "Bird Flu Preparedness Planner" delivers what it promises in a clear, compelling, straight-forward way. Dr. Woodsen lays out the facts of this health threat with no hype and no panic. However, it is real, it is deadly, and it is heading our way.
The most valuable feature of this slim, easy-to-read manual, is its simplicity and practicality for preparedness. It has checklists of supplies, medicines, and food a family would need in case of a severe epidemic or pandemic. I will try to get Tamiflu (to help with ordinary strains of influenza) and the over-the-counter remedies he recommends.
I think the food list could have been a bit more comprehensive. I plan to have more than rice and potatoes on hand to feed a family of six for eight weeks. However my grocery list looks more like a summer cookout for a family reunion than an emergency stash. I suppose 8 cases of baked beans and 8 summer sausages is a little over-the-top.
prepared for what?.......2006-03-28
this extremely alarmist manual does not offer practical suggestions, but a ritualistic rule of worry that will instill doomsday panic in anyone who tries to follow it. Shame on a practicing physician for coming up with such nonsense.

Slack-My-Girdle. Never has a fruit been better named. It's an apple, in this case, favored in Devonshire, England, by apple cider makers. A few pints of their good cider and you may want to slack your girdle, too. Crack the cover of Ben Watson's Cider, Hard and Sweet and you may find yourself planting apple trees against the day you too can fill your basement with jugs of fermenting apple juice. You would be following in a long, long tradition.
Watson's history of cider starts with the apple itself in the Tien-Shan mountains of far off Kazakstan. Alma-Ata, formerly the Kazak capital, translates as "father of apples." There have been a number of apple-centric books published of late, all of them echoing similar historic details. Watson distinguishes himself by focusing on the place of cider--the alcoholic beverage--in human history, particularly American history. "In 1726," the author tells us, "it was reported that a single village near Boston, consisting of about 40 families, put up nearly 10,000 barrels of cider. One historian stated that in the year 1767 a per capita average of 1.14 barrels of cider were consumed in Massachusetts." That'd be 35 gallons per person!
The arrival of breweries and brewers with German and eastern European immigration in the late 1800s, the codling moth, the exodus from farm to city of the majority American population, Prohibition, bad winters--all these factors and more led to the decline of cider making in America. A few farmers continued in the tradition; everyone else made and sold apple juice and called it cider. The tradition hung on in Britain and Europe, however, and new American cider makers are taking advantage of this living body of knowledge, planting European cider apples and trying some of the old varieties still available in this country. A book such as Cider will encourage the movement.
Watson gives clear instructions to get the cider enthusiast started, and then fills in with the kind of details that push the beginner deeper into the subject, deeper into the skills and legacy. A valuable resource for anyone interested in giving cider making a go, Cider, Hard and Sweet will be just as useful to anyone who has discovered the delicious world of cider, and wants to know more. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
Drinking fresh, or "sweet," cider in the fall is an American tradition. And recent years have seen the resurgence of "hard" (alcoholic) cider--once the drink of choice in England and the Americas--after decades of obscurity. Now this delightful, fizzy drink is turning up again in American farmer's markets and in bars and restaurants as a refreshing alternative to handcrafted beer. What's more, this elegantly simple beverage is so easy to make that producing good homemade cider, both hard and sweet, is well within the reach of the enthusiast. In Cider, Hard and Sweet, Ben Watson explores the cultural and historical roots of cider. He introduces us to the different styles of cider--including draft, farmhouse, French, New England, and sparkling, as well as apple wine, applejack, and cider vinegar--and gives complete instructions on how to make them at home with a minimum of time and equipment. In addition, there are tips on evaluating homemade ciders, instructions for hosting a cider tasting, and recipes for cooking and baking with cider. This book is sure to interest not only apple aficionados, but anyone who appreciates good food and drink and the cultural traditions that surround and inform them.
Customer Reviews:
Made me thirsty.......2007-08-23
I found this book to be a very entertaining and fact-filled introduction to Cider making (and drinking). I am an experienced home brewer, and the information contained in this book was sufficient to "get me started" with brewing cider. However, I think that it is NOT sufficient if you have little or no background in brewing. That being said, if you are looking for a book about brewing cider, this would make an excellent choice if you also buy a beginner-level book about homebrewing as a companion.
And if you are just interested in apples, cider enjoyment, and a good dose of apple history, this is definitely a well-written and enjoyable book.
good book.......2007-03-21
I've been making hard cider for a couple years now, this book helped me understand how to make tweaks to it and how to recognize what causes certain tastes. It also goes over additives to put in the cider to give it different tastes. The book gives a beginers outlook on making cider in general, however as far as basics to hard cider this book is very general. All and all a good read, and well worth it's money
Good information, but you'll need more for hard cider.......2002-10-14
As far as selecting apples, and actually creating cider from them, this book is abount as detailed as it gets. The tables in in that describe US and EU apple types as well as their traits is worth the price alone.
However, if you're looking to make hard (alcoholic) cider the book only takes you half way. Anyone looking to do hard cider should buy a seperate homebrew book that goes into detail about the brew process. Combine it with the information from this book and you'll have some great hard cider.
Awesome book!.......2002-04-04
This is a wonderful, inspiring book like few I have read recently. It opens a huge world that I never imagined existed. Cider isn't just the jugs in the grocery store and the 6-pack in the liquor store, its an important part of human and American history. The author has put a lot of time in researching this book, and is thick with fascinating information such as cider-only apple varieties, cider tasting terms, French vs English cider, etc etc etc.
The book does describe cider making, but that is not the main focus of the book. Still, any self-respecting cider maker should have a copy.
Outstanding for the apple grower too.......2000-05-26
Many of the books on cider making skim over the selection of apples, including English bittersweet and bittersharp varieties that are critical for outstanding cider production. Not Watson in this excellent book.
Several great lists of varieties and a good description of the cider apple classification methods is represented more clearly than I've found elsewhere.
A bit more clarification could have been given to the production process, as well as pressing details, but overall the book has been my favorite on the topic.

A remarkable illustrated work on the art of dressage by a modern–day master, featuring a lavish selection of color photos and drawings.

Just Excellent.......2005-01-22
This book is an instant classic. It discusses in detail some points that could take one years to otherwise figure out, for example, the truly correct passage. Beautifully written, it is a masterpiece that belongs in every dressage riders library.
For Professionals!!!.......2004-03-24
It is defenetly a great book, very philosophical one. However, I won't recommend it for beginner dressage riders. It lacks the simple practical riding instructions and tips, But still is a great book.
escuedo.......2003-04-12
A fantastic book with some magnificent pictures.
extremely educational for the equine world.
Well done!
A long-awaited complement to Belasik's trilogy.......2002-12-03
This is the most technical book that Belasik has published to date, and it provides a visual counterpart to his outstanding audiotape series. The pictures are particularly useful; the best of them bravely show the master in the "bad" moments-- hanging on the inside rein, for instance. These pictures assist the rider in recognizing the fool's gold that feels like bend but is weakness; I return to the mirrors in my own school equipped with brutal honesty. His descriptions of the logical progression of training will help any rider to comprehend her progress with a young horse, or her relationship with a schooled horse. Although this book is a more technical treatise than Riding Toward the Light or Songs of Horses, it shows the same poetic voice that makes those books so memorable. In my humble opinion, this book-- in combination with the audiotapes-- is the best book to educate the rider about the purest principles of riding integrated with the practical means of achieving them.
A Classic for the 21st Century.......2002-06-22
This has to be the most complete book on Equitation to the highest levels, ever to be written. It is quite simply, a masterpiece- highly readable, yet totally scholarly, as would be expected from an author such as Paul Belasik, whose previous books have gained him a worldwide, and well deserved, following.
The photographs which lavishly illustrate the book are exemplary in every way- Belasik's seat is impeccable and the horses look at ease in their work- real harmony between horse and rider.
Paul Belasik's vast knowledge of Classical Equitation, is woven effortlessly with his own conclusions, arrived at through the odyssey of research that he undertook, and chronicled in his book 'Riding Towards the Light'.
This book is a must for anyone who sees dressage first and foremost as an Art, and only secondarily as a sport.

Book Description
The Wheeling Decorating Company of Wheeling, West Virginia, was one of the outstanding companies that decorated china, pottery and porcelain during the first half of the 20th century. This company, often referred to as WDCO or Wheeling, decorated items (purchased blanks) from more than 500 companies around the world. The wide range of designs used by Wheeling is the work of a team of skilled craftsmen who sometimes added the Wheeling logo to their pieces, but often did not. Because many pieces were not marked, there has been a need for a reference on this company, and Collector Books is proud to publish the first. People who are glass collectors from America's glass belt along and close to the Ohio River will find this WDCO book to be of particular help in identifying etched gold and enameled items they might have in their collections. Filled with more than 550 detailed photographs, pricing information, and historical data. AUTHORBIO: Jim Webster has been an antique collector for more than 30 years. His major areas of interest include old tools and primitive household items. In 1997 he became interested in the history of the Wheeling Decorating Company, and in 2003 he authored a book on the company. He and wife Marsh scour antique malls and stores to add pieces to their vast collection. REVIEW: The Wheeling Decorating Company was one of the most prominent glass, porcelain, and pottery decorating companies during the first half of the twentieth century, and this book is the first to focus on the beautiful work that they did. A very thorough company history begins the book, with original company and employee photographs. The photo gallery consists of hundreds of large, detailed photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Useful, intriguing, and informative.......2004-01-14
This book is an incredible resource for a collecter. Webster's passion for thorough research is evident as he weaves stories about WDC's history into a very practical price guide. He approaches the subject as a storyteller, researcher, curator, and glassware dealer. This reminds the reader of why we get into collecting in the first place; it goes beyond the object and into how the object came to be. Webster's book teaches us about why this glassware was made and encourages us to ask similar questions about the material world around us. He strikes a fine balance between the technical, practical, and personal aspects of telling the story of the Wheeling Decorating Company. This is a most impressive debut and I hope we will see more from this fine author.
Wonderful.......2003-06-25
This book is wonderful. Very informative, well written. I would like to see more on this company.

Book Description
Using in-depth examples of "magical" practice such as exorcisms, love rites, alchemy and the transformation of humans into divine beings, this lively volume demonstrates that the word "magic" was used widely in late antique texts as part of polemics against enemies and sometimes merely as a term for other people's rituals. Professor Janowitz shows that "magical" activities were integral to late antique religious practice, and that they must be understood from the perspective of those who employed them.

Innovative and compelling treament of magic ritual.......2002-01-15
The latest work by Naomi Janowitz of UC Davis and Hebrew University is a fast-paced and well-organized treatment of "magic" in the first three centuries. "Magic", as Janowitz shows, was at this time very much defined by those who were hoping to discredit a ritual or practice of another party, and was in most cases merely an adjective of disparagement used by the competition. To those using it, magic wasn't magic at all, rather magic was power and efficacy steeped in ritual. Discussions include Greco-Roman, Christian, and Jewish concepts of magic, theories on daemons and angels, cursing and binding spells, practices of divination and deification, and a focus on the gender bias against women in the practice of magic throughout the period.
I found the book a breath of fresh air, and an enormous step forward, not least of which in the portions dealing with women's issues, which should prove a major contribution to women's studies in late antiquity. But also the bibliography alone is worth noting as it is extensive and reveals the wide range of sources brought to the topic, and is alone worth the price of the text. The book is not long and can be easily read, even by a newcomer to the topic, in one or two sittings.

Book Description
Her prints hang in the boardrooms of some of North America's biggest corporations--and in the cabins of some of New England's most rustic fishing camps. Among the few contemporary artists whose work has found an enthusiastic following well outside the traditional world of collectors and fine-art experts, Sabra Field has attracted a diverse and growing national audience. Her 1987 Vermont Bicentennial commemorative stamp, for example, depicting yellow farm fields, a red barn, and blue mountains, quickly became one of the U.S. Postal Service's best-selling issues, with more than 60 million copies purchased.
Author Tom Slayton says that Field, who lives deep in the Vermont countryside, brilliantly expresses "a rural zeigeist in her wood-block prints that is in the age-old traditional of pastoralism . . . which belies the underlying complexity of her work." But while Field's work falls solidly within the pastoral tradition, it also significantly updates it, striking a chord with activist environmentalists and policymakers and inspiring action not normally associated with the traditions of pastoral art.
One of North America's most accomplished contemporary printmakers, Sabra Field produces works of great beauty and boldness--with the power to command attention and appreciation at first glance and to endure the test of time in the eyes of their beholders. She is also coauthor of Before Life Hurries On.
Customer Reviews:
Sabra Field at her best.......2006-02-19
I have long been a fan of Sabra Field but I knew little about her. This wonderful book, which is full of her wonderful views and vistas, is a real look at Sabra "close up and personal." It is a look at her history and how she came to be who she is today. It is full of her love of Vermont expressed so well in her work. My problem with this book, however, is that it is impossible to have a favorite. While we have one of her winter scenes - "Winter Lights" (page 98 in the book), and a full sheet of the 29 cent US Postage stamp she did for Vermont's Bicentennial (Pg. 117), it is hard not to want more. This book will have to do for now. Tom Slayton's narrative is a thoughtful companion to the work of Sabra Field. You cannot go wrong with this beautiful book. David W.
